Wistia is a complete video marketing platform that helps teams create, host, market, and measure their videos and webinars all in one place.
In a recent episode of Marketers of Technology, we sat down with Sam Balter, Head of Content at Wistia, to learn how a four-person content team measures a webinar in three separate phases, and why AI still isn't allowed near the final draft of Wistia's blog.
Topics Discussed:
- How Sam's path through mining finance research, HubSpot, and ZoomInfo led him to head of content at Wistia
- How Wistia has expanded over 20 years from video hosting into editing, webinars, and podcasts
- Why Wistia differentiates on production quality and brand experience rather than competing on every feature
- How Sam's four-person content team splits work across blog, webinars, and research
- Why Sam tracks a webinar's promotion, live event, and after-event life as three separate metric sets
- How a "focused attendee rate" shows Sam in real time which moments hold or lose an audience
- Why Wistia keeps AI out of long-form writing but uses it heavily for process and data queries
- Why curiosity, not AI fluency, is the skill Sam is trying to build in his team
GTM & Technology Adoption Lessons:
- Differentiate on production quality and brand experience, not a feature checklist: In a market crowded with webinar tools and video editors, Sam said Wistia's edge is with customers who want a smaller video player that doesn't slow down site speed, stronger accessibility options like captions and dubbing, and seamless 4K webinar delivery, serving brands where the polish itself is the point.
- Track a webinar in three distinct phases, not one aggregate number: Sam breaks measurement into promotion, meaning registration rate and which sources drove signups, the event itself, meaning engagement and a focused attendee rate, and the after-event life, meaning blog recaps, clip embeds, and social distribution, and treats each phase as its own optimization problem.
- Use focused-attention drop-off as real-time content feedback: Sam said watching the focused attendee rate rise and fall during a live webinar shows him, almost in real time, which specific moments in the content re-engaged the room or lost it, turning webinar delivery itself into a diagnostic tool for future content.
- Connect content metrics to money and product usage, not just engagement: Beyond Wistia's own dashboards, Sam pushes webinar attendee lists into the CRM to see which ones converted into deals, and cross-references attendees of a product webinar against actual feature adoption data to check whether the content changed behavior, not just whether people watched.
- Keep AI out of long-form writing, and lean on it hard for process and data queries: Sam said AI still isn't good enough to write on-brand long-form content without heavy editing, so Wistia doesn't use it there. Instead, an internal AI agent posts and bulk-edits content across hundreds of blog posts from a single Slack command, and Sam uses AI to query historical customer and usage data for answers that used to take a month of manual digging.
- Treat curiosity, not AI fluency, as the differentiating skill for content teams: Sam said AI can answer almost any question quickly, but it cannot generate the curiosity to know which questions are worth asking, so the skill he is actively developing in his team is the instinct to keep digging and asking better questions.
