Construction, quality, program, QC, QA, training, inspection Why Construction Quality Matters
Dee Davis explains why construction quality needs its own program, its own reporting structure, and its own authority in the field. This episode breaks down the difference between quality control and quality assurance, and why a written plan only works if people are trained on it and actually use it.
Key topics
- The core difference between quality control and quality assurance
- QC is contractor-side and internal to the company performing the work
- QA is owner-side, often handled by a third party with no role in installing the work
- A strong quality program reduces conflict of interest by keeping reporting independent from construction execution
- Why company crews need to work from the same standards so quality does not vary by crew or person
- A written QC plan is essential, but it fails if nobody knows it exists or has been trained on it
- Leaving QC as a collateral duty for installation crews creates a high risk of inconsistent results
- Good QC and QA personnel need to know codes, standards, project plans, specifications, manufacturer instructions, and company quality plans
- Quality staff must have the authority to stop work when something does not comply
- Quality roles are not the same as building inspectors for permit sign-offs
- Inspection and test plans translate specifications into concrete field checks, test methods, and pass or fail criteria
- The goal of quality is to verify that materials, fabrication, installation, and testing all match the project requirements
