Speaker 1: Musin Mohammed, Carolina Panther legend here joining us to talk to the Panther fans. Addressed the Panther fans after a frustrating go and two start moves.
00:00:09
Speaker 2: How you feeling, man, what's going on?
00:00:11
Speaker 3: You know? Mac t bone Mac guys?
00:00:14
Speaker 4: It's been too long, man. I missed you guys.
00:00:15
Speaker 2: Definitely miss you too.
00:00:16
Speaker 3: Man. Glad to be back, Glad to have some football back in uh you know, in the city, and looking forward to the guys playing at home this week.
00:00:25
Speaker 1: Now you got to answer the question. Maybe we insulted you by asking necro questions?
00:00:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, any of those things?
00:00:33
Speaker 3: You ever gave up the neck roll that I gave up the neckro in like ninety one, Okay I was. I was a linebacker and a running back in high school. Yeah. Once I. Once I went to the two point stance, the necro wasn't cool anymore.
00:00:46
Speaker 2: No wide receiver that's a good point.
00:00:48
Speaker 1: Wide receivers wearing neck rolls that wouldn't look the other I would not look the other football fashion thing.
00:00:53
Speaker 5: And it's in your era to moose, especially in the beginning of it. The shoulder pads were ginormous in the nineties I remember I saw a video of Jerome Bettis the other day who had like the biggest shoulder pads ever. We went through a big shoulder pad here as well.
00:01:07
Speaker 3: Then. Yeah, I'm thankful for the fashion overhaul, you know, because it was pretty ugly back then. I mean, it's like looking at the mullets and the pig pants and the flannels and all that.
00:01:19
Speaker 4: You know, it kind of it took its course.
00:01:20
Speaker 3: I'm glad it went out of fashion.
00:01:22
Speaker 1: That's back's college outfen Oh, I rocked those flannels in the nineties and college Moose.
00:01:28
Speaker 3: Hey, Mac, I bet you've still got a few flannels in your closet.
00:01:32
Speaker 2: Oh, I could break them. I could break those out.
00:01:34
Speaker 1: I could go grunge if grunge comes back, Moose, I'm ready.
00:01:37
Speaker 2: I'm ready.
00:01:37
Speaker 3: Bag.
00:01:39
Speaker 1: All right, let's let's let's get back to the world of twenty twenty five and this Panther team. What if you like, how discouraged should we be by this start? I mean, how bad was it? I mean, what did you think of the first two weeks? Were you surprised?
00:01:57
Speaker 4: You know, I don't know if.
00:01:59
Speaker 3: I was asked the first week as I was the second week, you know, I was actually encouraged by how we played other than the first two series, right, I was encouraged by how we play in against the Cardinals.
00:02:14
Speaker 4: We spotted him ten points and then.
00:02:16
Speaker 3: We gained our composure. We fought back, and we played how we should play. I'm still looking for who wants to be the hero, right, and I think that's the one thing that we have missing here. At the end of the game, we didn't have a hero, and we're looking for that. And I saw some bright spots throughout the game. I've always been a fan of Shuba Hubbard. I think Shuba does a great job of motivating the team. He's kind of a heart and heartbeat and voice and so forth, and I think he plays extremely hard. I saw some bright spots with ric o'dondo coming in. I don't know if Schubert was a little banged up, but he got some pretty good exposure in the Arizona game and he played well. Jatavian standers, right, he might be a to play. I mean, this kid may be able to play. And you know, I wasn't expecting much out of Hunter Refro, but you know, he showed me that he can step up to the challenge as well, I thought t Mac at times showed that, you know, he can make plays, but and then and then Xavier is still off to a little bit of a slow start, and I like to see uh him utilized you know a little bit, you know, differently or really trying to figure out how to you know, I think they're still trying to figure out how to get the ball in his hands and what plays does he run? Well, I mean they try to hand the ball to him. We know he's you know, somewhat of a freakish athlete, but you know, how how does he fit into a is it a system? Right? And you know, how to canalists utilize him? I'm still trying to still trying to figure that out, right, which.
00:03:49
Speaker 4: You know, we all want to.
00:03:51
Speaker 3: See Xavier playing playing good ball.
00:03:54
Speaker 4: So between all.
00:03:56
Speaker 3: Of that, I mean, I think we're still looking for the guy who you know, what games on the line, we need a miracle to happen because you know, in every season you have great football and you got to play great football to win, but you also need some luck. And it happened on Sunday, right, I mean, like who would have thought were to return recover on side kick? Right? It hasn't happened since the early nineties or something like that. Right when Mac was Mac was wearing his flannel last time to happen, you know, but to get the miracle.
00:04:26
Speaker 4: Then it's like, okay, now, who's going to be the.
00:04:28
Speaker 3: Hero in this story here? Right? Like this story is being told and we haven't found that guy yet. So that's what I'm looking for. Who wants to own that? Because we got guys in the past and we rotated around. You know, was Ricky Proll to start the season, it was Smitty, it was me, it was you know, you name it. I mean, we had guys out there, Deshaun Foster getting you know, touching everybody on the defense, touching to Son Foster in the championship game, you know, Ricky Manning, you know Junior. So like, we need someone on this team that's gonna step up and and make that play.
00:05:01
Speaker 4: And you know, and take us over the top, get us that win.
00:05:05
Speaker 3: And hopefully we can get that done this Sunday when he.
00:05:08
Speaker 5: Gets back healthy. How much do you think Jalen Cocher maybe can be that guy. What do you think of his game going forward and how big he's going to be for this offense when he gets back in a number of weeks.
00:05:19
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, you know, I think he's on either the.
00:05:22
Speaker 3: Pup list or I r.
00:05:25
Speaker 2: He's got to miss the first four at least.
00:05:28
Speaker 3: Yeah, So I mean we we need Cocher's. He to me is kind of like the secret weapon that no one's known about. I love the way he plays. He's big, he's physical. My personal preference is that you know, he comes onto the Muslim Mohammad nutrition program man and and and really like fine tune his body because if he, you know, takes care of his body and can stay healthy, I mean this guy can play.
00:05:54
Speaker 4: I mean, we know he can play. He's you know, makes one hand.
00:05:57
Speaker 3: To catch us. He's special. So you know, I think, you know, focusing on what he puts in his body and how he takes care of it can keep him on the field longer, and you know, hopefully over the next four weeks we can get him back. But I think he's the guy that has that potential. But like I said, there's a lot of you know, that P word is powerful. You know, it means two different things. You can say P for potential or P for production. And I want to production guys right, Like, guys are going to come out there and going to be consistent every single day, make big plays, win ball games. That's what we're looking for, and we're still.
00:06:32
Speaker 2: Looking for it, no doubt, no doubt.
00:06:34
Speaker 1: Now here's a guy that has Let's get specifically into some of the guys that have played the first couple of weeks. I know you kind of mentioned them all, but let's start on the positive. I'll give you a p word positive and this guy has that. And this guy's had the production moose is TMAC through the first two games of the season. Give me a wide receivers perspective, things that we might not notice, Like what have you noticed with him as a rookie in his first two games that you've really been impressed by.
00:07:04
Speaker 3: I've been impressed by his range. I think he's a guy. I mean, for a tall guy, he gets in and out of his breaks, you know pretty well. I think there's times during the game he doesn't play with the same level of intensity that he should on every single snap when you add up all the snaps in the game, right, I mean, it's a pretty short amount of time that you're actually running and so you know, my coach back in the day, Richard Willins and bless her soul, and he would always tell us like, look, you're only running for this amount of time in the game, and so one hundred percent effort on every play, right, And so I think there's times that you know t Mac either either tired or whatever the case may be. But you know, it doesn't look like he's given all the effort that he can. If he's honest with himself, he could probably go a little harder at times. Right. I'm impressed with his hands. I think for a young guy, he's got confidence. He takes the field and knows he can play against some of the better players in the league. But like I said, I mean, if if you are a quarterback and you could throw the ball all over the yard between the twenty and the twenty, but can never put it in an end zone, you know we got a problem here at Houston, you know. So for me, I want to see t Maac become that guy that when the game is on the line, he's raising his hands up like look at this, right, and he's making those kind of plays not when it doesn't count, but when it counts or both, right, make them when they don't count, but absolutely got to make them when they when they matter the most. And like I say, I mean, I think.
00:08:37
Speaker 4: He's the kind of guy that can can do that, but.
00:08:39
Speaker 3: He has to believe that and then you got to go out and do it right. So yeah, So does you have the potential for it. Absolutely. I mean we've watched the plays that he's made. I mean it's like, okay, you got it now, But when everybody's looking at you and everybody knows that we're trying to come to you on this play, can you still make those plays?
00:08:57
Speaker 1: They did take him, They took him out on that last drive like you could whenever they were doing defensively. He didn't even get a target on that last drive. I think that's to.
00:09:06
Speaker 4: Your point, you know, yeah, And I mean I mean Aj, I mean we.
00:09:10
Speaker 3: Saw it happening with AJ Brown with Philadelphia Eagles when you know, in the first couple of games. Well actually when they played against the Dallas Cowboys. I watched that game and like, I mean, he almost went to you know, almost the whole game without a target or a catch. And you know, sometimes defensive coverages can do that, and that's why you got teammates that that step up and can counterbalance step and that may have been the case on that last drive. I didn't watch the film. I don'm not privy to having the All twenty two, but it could have been the case. But nonetheless, I mean, you've got to be such a threat that and have a good threat on the other side where they can't just take that away from the completely.
00:09:50
Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, Moost.
00:09:51
Speaker 5: The issues that we've seen sort of come up for AXL, especially in year number two, off to the slow start. How fixable do you think some of these issues are with him that you see?
00:10:03
Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I think what we're seeing is a guy who is, like I said, a freakish athlete. He can return kicks, he can you know, you watch him in college, right, I think people would assess him and say that maybe he was not a very polished wide receiver, but a hell of an athlete, maybe first round talent, but not a polished, polished wide receiver. And what we're seeing is a work in progress. I mean we're literally what we're seeing is a work in progress. I think he had a better season last year, but this season isn't over with. He's just off to a rough start. And you know, typically when you don't play in the preseason and you don't you know, things have changed from a rules perspective, just overall structure of the NFL. People. You know, a lot of guys earlier in the year are not getting the same type of reps that they're going to get and they're not gonna be as polished. And so what we're seeing is a guy who is still a working progress. I think he still has a lot of work to do become a great wide receiver. I mean, he's just a really, really good athlete.
00:11:06
Speaker 1: What you would you had mentioned something interesting and it actually kind of jives with what coach Canalis said yesterday and the presser. Coach Canalis was asked about XL and at one point he said, you know, this is on me. I've got two fine ways to you know, use him and to get him involved. It's on me just as much as it's on him. And you said something kind of similar. You said, basically, you're looking at the way they're using him and you think they're still trying to feel it out. Do you have thoughts looking at XL and like on like, what are the best ways to kind of try to get him going?
00:11:40
Speaker 3: Do you think man, I tell you, you know, it's interesting, you know the short checkdowns where you know you got t mac going on more of the deeper routes. Right, I think he's maybe a little bit more polished when it comes to running some of the deeper dig routes and corner routes and things like that. Let him draw coverage and let uh excel leak in behind him as a checkdown guy, right, I mean, you know, right now, I think we're using tuber Hubbard primarily as a checkdown guy. Not saying he isn't justified, but that's just another option. Is as you're switching guys around, let him become the guy that runs the shallow cross Let XL become the guy that runs the shallow crossing routes. Or some of the pick plays where you got you know, somebody who's you know, not a pick play that's illegal, but you know, the interference plays a little bit.
00:12:26
Speaker 2: We know, we know you guys.
00:12:34
Speaker 3: You know, see we don't tell our secrets, but I mean, you know, like some of those shallow crossing routes we used to run drive and shallow cross I'm talking West Coast kind of off stuff. We used to run stuff like that where you know, the tight end will come off the ball and I come up underneath him. Westley go up, and then I come underneath him, and you know, whoever was guarding me one on one has to sift this way through a bunch of bodies to try to cover me. And then you know, I'm catching the ball on the other end. So he can run plays like that, check down plays, you.
00:13:01
Speaker 4: Know, and try to get the ball into his hands, quit and.
00:13:04
Speaker 3: Let him become a runner. Right, yeah, yeah, I think those are the kind of ways I would try to figure out how you kind of factor them into the offense that way, get them started early, get some balls in his hands, and then let him get hot.
00:13:19
Speaker 2: I love it.
00:13:19
Speaker 1: Hey, your secrets safe with us, all right, that you guys ran pick plays.
00:13:22
Speaker 3: Hey, don't tell anybody I told you that.
00:13:25
Speaker 2: If they ain't called, they ain't picked plays. Baby. That's the way I look at.
00:13:28
Speaker 1: It, all right, real quick, And I'm sure this did not shock you, Moose if you have heard about it already. If you haven't heard about it, I'm going to tell you your friend, your teammate four years, Steve Smith. I was never one to create uh, you know, to to give you a good sound bite back when y'all played. And he was on this radio station this week and many got people stirred up like he always does. Did you hear what he said this week on w FNZ.
00:13:53
Speaker 2: Moose, you know, I.
00:13:57
Speaker 3: Had a busy day yesterday. I haven't seen the comments.
00:14:01
Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, I haven't seen the comments.
00:14:04
Speaker 3: But yeah, I haven't at all.
00:14:06
Speaker 1: I love but people, I'm we got a text from somebody that says, see if Moose agrees with Smitty, I feel like Moose will phrase things differently. Smitty was talking about Excel and he said he was getting on the fans giving him grief, and he said, hey, now my players pertective is going to come out here. But he basically said, I'm tired of the fan I'm paraphrasing, all right. I hope I do it justice, but I'm tired of the fans complaining around here all the time. He wanted fans to give Excel a chance, and then he went as far as to call Charlotte a weak ass city.
00:14:37
Speaker 2: Moose, Yeah, are you surprised? I bet you're not surprised.
00:14:45
Speaker 3: Well, you know, with Smitty, here's what I know about Steve Man when I when it was time to play. He was a guy that I could always count that he was going to give the same amount of effort that I would give in terms of how do we a proach the game, how do we prepare, how do we how do we win?
00:15:04
Speaker 4: And you know, my passion is I think I expressed my passion.
00:15:09
Speaker 3: A little differently than Steve. And we'll just leave it at that. Man.
00:15:12
Speaker 4: But you know, like he's got his opinions and he's.
00:15:14
Speaker 3: Welcome to him. So you know, you know, when Steve comments on something, I just you know, we let Steve be Steve Man because you know, you love him in one situation, you hate him in one situation. But guess what, you know you could count them and when you need them. So yeah, So with me, man, I'll just say this. I love the city, I love the fans. I take them good, bad, ugly, all things.
00:15:37
Speaker 4: In between, because you know, when they when I.
00:15:40
Speaker 3: Need him the most, man, they always were there for me. And uh, you know, we were called the cardiac cast. But at the beginning of the season we.
00:15:47
Speaker 4: Might want a couple of games with half empty stands, But by the end of the season they never left right because they knew that they were going to have a show. And in terms of excel, I think everybody wants everybody wants him to be the player that he has the potential to be.
00:15:59
Speaker 3: He's a homegrown kid. He's right from South Carolina here. I think the disappointment is because, you know, and he's probably disappointed as well. They want to win. They want to win games, and they brought him here to help win games. And that's the bottom line. Let's go win football games. Winning cures all bad plays, so you can have bad plays during the game, go win the game. Who cares about the bad play. Let's win some football game. Yeah.
00:16:24
Speaker 1: I hope he gets it going, man, I hope he does. All right, Man, hey, we appreciate you moves. Thanks so much for coming on. Man, love getting your knowledge and catch it up with you.
00:16:32
Speaker 3: Be good, all right, guys, take care,
Speaker 1: Musin Mohammed, Carolina Panther legend here joining us to talk to the Panther fans. Addressed the Panther fans after a frustrating go and two start moves.
