Speaker 1: She is the hostess with the mostest on the ACC Network, whether it's ACC Huddle or all over the place, including the ACC tip-off coverage here in Charlotte this week. And she is now here with us to talk some ACC football. Taylor Tannenbaum, ACC Network, joins us on the Mac and Bone Show. Taylor, how have you been? What's going on?
00:00:21
Speaker 2: Hello, boys.
00:00:22
Speaker 3: I've been great. It's been an awesome week. Weeks full of all the things, and always great to be back in Charlotte, but obviously it's short-lived because we are hopping on a plane and heading to Pittsburgh today.
00:00:33
Speaker 2: I like it.
00:00:34
Speaker 1: We talked about that game last hour, and I don't know how many Tar Heel fans are with us on this, but we really believe backup QB making a first start for Pitt. Pitt had an emotional win last week, and Caroline is clearly more competitive. I can see a path to an upset for UNC. How do you feel about that?
00:00:55
Speaker 3: Absolutely. I mean, when a team loses its starting quarterback, that shifts a little bit of everything. Holding Garner is an inexperienced quarterback. This will be his first career start, right? But he's been around the block. He's played at Auburn, Texas State, so he's seen a lot of ball, but I don't know how much live ball with the ones against a team like Carolina that he's seen, right? So if you stick the dogs on him, You never know what could possibly happen. And then it becomes a low scoring affair. And if you're like Carolina last week, you special teams, use your defense to try to generate some points because offensively for Carolina, while it's been okay, I don't know how great they could fare against this pit defense who will always keep the Panthers in the football game. Like no question about it. But when you lose a starting quarterback, yes, to your point, that's grounds for you to believe that Carolina can certainly pull this off on the road.
00:01:55
Speaker 4: Taylor, another huge game we can't wait to see on Saturday is Wake and NC State. Let's start with the Wake side of things. How impressed have you been with Jake Dickert through a year and now some change into this year, a month in? And what is it that just makes his style work with Wake Forest where it's not always easy to win there like he is right now?
00:02:17
Speaker 3: Yeah, most wins by a head coach in Wake Forest history in his first two years. Nine wins last year and well on their way to the sky's the limit, to be honest with you, at this point this year. I just think he has guys playing hard, man. And part of being a head coach is putting people in position to succeed. He's hired the correct coordinators. and Scotty Hazleton on one side defensively, which that defense is legit. If you ask any of our guys, our analysts, Eddie Royal, Eric McLean, Jimbo Fisher, they're so impressed, especially what they do with that defensive front. They will confuse the heck out of you. And then offensively with Robbie Zell and pairing him with a quarterback that he had a ton of success with at South Alabama. Once again, it's been a match made in heaven. And then they have found some pieces playmaker wise that have really stepped up to the plate and Carlos Hernandez and this young big receiver and Jack Foley like they've got some dudes and while they may not be big name guys like they play their role to perfection and they execute and he has them believing like strip the name off the jersey like this football team is legit and for whatever reason throughout the years like even when Dave Clawson was there beyond that Wake Forest just doesn't get the love it deserves for certainly overproducing for what they have on the table. And once again, that we're seeing that this year and it's pissing me off to no end, but if they just keep winning, hopefully everything takes care of itself. I know if you follow me on Twitter, you know, like I'm enraged about the wake forest Duke conversation. Um, They should be ranked and talked about more highly. But I just love what Jake Dickard is doing there in Winston-Salem.
00:03:58
Speaker 2: I didn't even have to bring this up.
00:04:00
Speaker 1: I was going to tell you that my favorite version of you, Taylor Tannenbaum, is Feisty Taylor. I just love it. I love the way that you stand up because somebody's got to do it, right? Like there are plenty of people to stand up for the 11th SEC.
00:04:15
Speaker 2: Team to be ranked. So I'm glad that you are out there to do that.
00:04:19
Speaker 1: And yeah, I really think the performance by Wake against Miami, I.
00:04:25
Speaker 2: Think it opened some eyes nationally, but apparently not enough.
00:04:29
Speaker 3: You know, apparently not enough. And look, the SEC is great. Do not get me wrong. I covered that league for years. Like they're, they are unmatched when it comes to certainly recruiting. And then also just environment. Like there's, it's second to none. Like you are never going to win a debate, lose a debate on that. Like, I understand that's where that comes from, but that doesn't mean it can detract from some of the quality of the teams in the ACC and, And my problem is if you're going to rank some of these teams the way that you are, you cannot not be ranking Wake and Duke. It's not logical, and it's negligence, and you need to be paying better attention. And I understand AP poll voters have a lot to look at, and I'm not calling everybody out. There are some incredible voters out there who, if you look at their ballots, are absolutely correct, and they watch a lot of tape and a lot of live ball to know what they're talking about. But there's ones out there who just, like, I feel like they're granted the right to do this, and it's a responsibility. It's not just a right. And the people who I know, my friend Mark Packer is one of them, who says the AP poll doesn't matter. I have talked to several head coaches currently, and I ask genuinely speaking, does this not matter? They'll stand up at a podium and be like, we don't care about the ranking. Peel back the curtain. It does matter. Multiple coaches. I've talked to two in the last two weeks. who have told me it does matter in terms of internally that your message is being received and everything that's happening on the football field for these young men, it's justification that what they're doing is the right thing. It's also in recruiting, especially in this day and age when maybe you may be a team with a name like Wake Forest or Duke and it doesn't resonate as well. If you have a number next to your name, it does resonate with high schoolers. And just, you know, when you've been working so hard at something to not see it come to fruition can be a little bit of a dagger to the heart. And, you know, just validation is important. So for people who say the AP poll doesn't matter, I understand the CFP will come out later. But internally within a program and with a head coach who's trying to send a message and get his guys to do what he wants them to do, it does matter.
00:06:34
Speaker 4: Wake played a Friday night game against Miami where the eyes of the college football world, because of that spot, were largely on Wake Forest. If you watch that game closely, it actually– paid attention wake forest pushed miami as far as anybody has this year so it's crazy to think for how good as wake is their best performance and their most notable thing of why they should be ranked taylor as you know is how well they fought and played against miami and they don't get credit for that though yeah.
00:07:02
Speaker 3: No and apparently people people love a good loss and it's losing to the number four team in the country by 13 points granted if you watched With your own two eyes, there were multiple chances in that fourth quarter. There was a drop in the end zone on fourth down that would have made it a one-score game, and then we're having a completely different conversation. If you watched, you would have seen, like, that is a great loss to the number four team in the country where it wasn't just a 13-point loss. It was potentially a one-score game at times in that fourth quarter. So I'm with you. You don't want to get me wound up. Finally, Ashley Strohlein just walked in the car. We are going to a workout right now.
00:07:36
Speaker 1: Oh, she texted us.
00:07:38
Speaker 2: How about this? Hey, look, there's our Tuesday guest. How many Mac and Bone guests can we get in the same car?
00:07:45
Speaker 3: Oh, my goodness.
00:07:46
Speaker 2: Are you guys meeting us for this workout? Is that what I heard? Yeah, be right over.
00:07:49
Speaker 1: Be right over.
00:07:50
Speaker 2: We didn't schedule it during our workout window. What is that window, Bone? Window is... Never to never. Later on today.
00:07:59
Speaker 1: All right, let's see here. This threw a strong loop here. We got a party going on.
00:08:04
Speaker 4: Stro, you know the deal. Don't say where you're working out, though. It's because our texters might show up.
00:08:08
Speaker 3: No, absolutely not.
00:08:13
Speaker 1: Some of y'all out there, yeah, some of y'all out there, we do not want y'all knowing this damn address.
00:08:17
Speaker 2: That would involve our texters knowing where the gym is also.
00:08:19
Speaker 1: Some of y'all have issues out there. So, Taylor, what do you think? We're talking all about Wake and giving them flowers. I love the way C.J. Bailey's playing. I love the way he's responded from the complete mess of the Vanderbilt play. And I love that State got that win against Louisville. The problem is... They're so dang banged up as you know, Taylor on the offensive line, Duke Scott. So like, how do you feel about that game in Raleigh on Saturday?
00:08:48
Speaker 3: You know, I thought Davion Goss came in and did a great job and not the dude who can, can carry the load. It's just been Duke Scott's role at that running back position. So I anticipate he'll step right in and, and pick up where Duke Scott can't be because he's obviously out for this game, um, per the report that just came out. I love the way they're playing. There's always an opportunity. For whatever reason, they've had success. They've had success in the scenario. Obviously, Wake is in a different place right now, and they're feeling good. Like, there's... You know, we can say what we want externally, you guys, and rag on them all we want for the fumble in the end zone. But, like, clearly what Dave Doran has internally is working. And they have completely turned the page. You almost forget about what happened at that point. The win over Louisville was great. But, like, I would love you guys if they could just, like, close a game. It would be really awesome if they could just not take it to the final second of the fourth quarter like one time this season. I'm not so sure that's what it's going to be just because the way that they're built. But you always have a chance when you have C.J.
00:09:52
Speaker 4: Bailey.
00:09:52
Speaker 3: And like you just said, credit to him, man. He could have went one direction or the other and he chose the right one. And we've been saying he's an NFL talent, right? And he wanted to stay in Raleigh, and it's for reasons like this. Like, you can rag on him, but everything's still ahead. This league is crazy. And a one loss in conference play at this point means you still have a shot at Charlotte. So why not NC State?
00:10:16
Speaker 4: Why not? Okay, I like it. I'm having to explain to texters that you and Stro are friends. Someone thinks that Stro was hitchhiking and you happened to see her and she jumped in the car.
00:10:25
Speaker 2: Let's go with that. It was planned.
00:10:28
Speaker 1: It was a planned ride. Stro wasn't like, hey, give me a ride. And Taylor was like, all right, come on in. You guys planned this out. That story is juicier. This texter says these two ladies headed to work out just furthermore embarrasses your lack of general activity.
00:10:44
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not going to argue with that. Is anybody surprised that they are more fit than we are, more active than we are? We're working right now. We can't work out and work at the same– we're doing something here. You're a little busy.
00:10:55
Speaker 3: That's fair.
00:10:55
Speaker 1: That's our excuse. And later it's nap time, Taylor, all right? That's my excuse for later on. We got you next year.
00:11:00
Speaker 2: All right, Taylor. Hey, good to talk with you.
00:11:02
Speaker 1: I'm glad we did get a little peek at Feisty Taylor.
00:11:06
Speaker 2: I want you to keep that up.
00:11:07
Speaker 1: The ACC needs ambassadors like you and EMAC and the whole crew fighting a good fight.
00:11:12
Speaker 2: We appreciate it. Have a good workout. Thank you, Taylor. Appreciate it.
00:11:15
Speaker 1: Thank you.
00:11:16
Speaker 3: And I promise next time I'm here, I'm in the studio.
00:11:19
Speaker 2: Okay, definitely. Yeah, we got to do that. We got to do that. Let us know. I'll bring Murphy in to meet you.
00:11:24
Speaker 1: Perfect.
00:11:24
Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
00:11:25
Speaker 3: That would be bright in my day. I'll talk to you guys soon. Have a good workout later.
