00:00:11
Speaker 1: Oh, man, Zach Gelb going to join us, 925. What does he think of the Panthers? He might have cracked a joke or two about giving up 59 points during last week's Friday appearance. What does he think about the Panthers, the way they put it to the Falcons? And the best I can tell, Bone, the way the Falcons did the Packers last night, I feel like we should be even more proud today of the win, although it did look like Michael Penix might have been an upgrade over Cooper Rush and Jack Strand.
00:00:37
Speaker 2: Also an example of how quickly things can change from what a team looks like on Sunday to whether it be Thursday or Sunday or next Monday. This league, man, you never know what a team may look like. That's why you can't go 0% in this league. You can't say, oh, there's a 0% chance the Browns beat us.
00:00:55
Speaker 3: That's crazy talk. That's just asking for trouble, man.
00:00:58
Speaker 2: Maybe we should ask a guy that played in the league for 12 years and not you and I that, though.
00:01:01
Speaker 3: You think he knows it better than us?
00:01:03
Speaker 1: Rodney McLeod, man, what a hard hit in safety he was. Played 13 years in the NFL, included getting a Super Bowl ring with Philly. Also played with the Rams, the Colts, and the Browns. Right now, he is doing a good job. ACC Network analyst, covering games weekly with George Sedano. He's got Virginia, Delaware tomorrow. We've got to talk to him about some of his observations about this conference. and Rodney McLeod, ACC Network, joins us on the Mac and Bone Show. Rodney, what's going on, man? We got somebody that played 13 years in it. We just talk about it, man. Much respect, brother. How you doing?
00:01:41
Speaker 4: I'm doing great. How are you guys doing this morning?
00:01:43
Speaker 3: We're doing good, man. We are doing good. We love this time of year.
00:01:46
Speaker 1: And I know you live for this time of year as well, as far as football season goes. What made you want to get into the analyst side of things? It's got to be love of the game, right? I would think.
00:02:00
Speaker 4: Absolutely. Love of the game is first and foremost. really how do you want to make your contribution to the game right after you leave it? And, you know, there's a number of different ways that you can utilize your knowledge, your expertise, and passion. And so I felt like analysts calling games was probably the closest thing to being a player all over again, outside of being a coach. It's the purest thing to the game. And I just want to– I just really enjoy teaching games. the game of football, right, to the audience and kind of just bringing them into my world, how I see the game, especially from a defensive mindset and viewpoint, and then telling the story of a lot of these young men that are chasing their dreams and trying to end up where I am. So it's been very fulfilling, rewarding. It's been a challenge, but I do enjoy it every Saturday.
00:02:57
Speaker 2: Rodney, the way NC State lost last week to Vanderbilt became really maybe the most talked about story of the college football weekend last week. In your lengthy football career, had you ever seen a team lose really in that fashion? And how tough might the bounce back be for a team after a loss like that? State plays App State tomorrow. How tough a spot is that for the Pack?
00:03:24
Speaker 4: Very difficult to overcome. You don't get those games back. You don't get those opportunities back again. And that was a missed moment for NC State, who I felt could be a dark horse team in the ACC, especially under with C.J. Bailey at the helm. He's a talented quarterback that you know, can spin the football all over the field. But that's one area, right, that you expect him to grow into, you know, coming into his junior year. You know, smart football. And in the game, you pretty much have a game seal. You know, any sense of contact, you have to go down there. And that's a missed mark. And like you said, it's going to be hard to recover from games like those. You look back at the end of the season, like, you know, that could have been the game, too. propel us, keep us in the running, or it could have been the game that broke us.
00:04:21
Speaker 1: Rodney, what do you think about Miami? Miami is the favorite to win this conference, obviously. I will give an attaboy to Wake, though, for competing with them in the second half. Miami's banged up right now, right? They lose backup running back Marty Brown. They lose one of their receivers, Josh Moore. What do you think about this Miami team? How high up do you rank them among national title contenders?
00:04:45
Speaker 4: Offensively, they have to be one or two. I don't know another offensive personnel or unit that operates as effectively as they do. First, it starts with Darian Mesa, the way he's able to control the game through the air. He has a very good pulse of just the offensive structure. His receivers, of course, Malachi Toney stands out. He's unguardable out there, and they just continue to find a way to get in the football. And then you can hand the ball off to a bruiser and Mark Fletcher. And, you know, when you have those two engines operating at an efficient level, you know, you're dangerous. They look scary to me. I think, to your point, injuries right now is what they're up against. That's one of the crises this year, and how do they maybe– build depth while some of those guys are sitting out to help them later along in the year. So I think this is going to be the first test for them. Can they sustain this level of performance while some of their players work themselves back into the lineup?
00:06:01
Speaker 2: We're talking to Rodney McLeod, longtime NFL safety, now doing great work with the ACC Network. Rodney, your first game this year was Duke hosting Tulane. So I wanted to ask you, what's your thoughts on where Manny Diaz has this Duke program from a consistency level? And you got to see Nate Shepard up close. What are your thoughts on him as one of the best players in America right now?
00:06:26
Speaker 4: Manny Diaz, phenomenal leader. Every stop that he's been at, he's made a difference and changed the culture forward. And he's done the same at Duke. They're reigning ACC champions. They didn't do it in the conventional way, but they do have that banner. And that says something about your team, about your leader. And right now, after looking at them over that first game and then in the early part of the season, they found their identity through the run game in Nate Shepard. He's a workhorse. He sees everything that stats speak of. You know, he's really good vision through the hole, good burst, good change of direction. He has the ability to kind of possess all, like, the qualities, quickness, power, and strength. and they're beating on him wholeheartedly. Walker Egan is an experienced quarterback, and so he's doing enough right now for them. They have a really good tight end, and then you pair that with Manny Diaz's defense that has kind of found their way recently. You have to like the position that you put yourself in these first three days of the season.
00:07:43
Speaker 1: Rodney, what do you think about this Friday night game tonight? Clemson fans got to stay up late tonight, and this one just feels scary to me. First of all, there's a lot of flaws, even with the UNC win. There's a lot of flaws on this Clemson team. Cal's quarterback is freaking legit. I would think you'd think that's a Sunday, dude.
00:08:01
Speaker 3: You know. What are your thoughts about Clemson Cal tonight?
00:08:08
Speaker 4: Personally, I give the edge to Cal. I believe in JKS. I believe in the fact that most teams in the ACC, the ones that are succeeding, have an established quarterback. They have a quarterback that they can trust, that they can win the football games, that's not afraid of the moment, and they feel secure about. And I give an edge to Kyle. JKS is an NFL talent. Just his level of just employees in the pocket, He has the great NFL arm talent, you know, whether it's velocity, his touch, sees the game very well. He's just polished beyond his years. And so I like Kyle because of that reason. A lot of other reasons, too. But just looking at Clemson in their early struggles, that gives the edge to Kyle because of that man alone.
00:09:05
Speaker 2: Roddy, you have Virginia tomorrow coming off the loss here in Charlotte to West Virginia last week, a team you know well in the Virginia Cavaliers where you went to school.
00:09:14
Speaker 3: What went wrong.
00:09:15
Speaker 2: For the Cavs against West Virginia? And do you put them on that level below Miami of a team that can still maybe make the championship game in the ACC?
00:09:27
Speaker 4: Yeah, my Cavs took off last weekend, of course, but I think a few things stood out to me. was, one, the inability to use Padula in the run game. I felt that's a missing component and a component that they need in order to have a strong run game that they possess. But he was non-existent in that football game. And then at some point, the game was in his hands, right? And he struggled to... throw the ball accurately on the outside part of the field. Receiver struggled versus one-on-one coverage once West Virginia started to tighten down and move the block. So that's what Virginia's up against offensively is, you know, can Pervila actually be a passer? can they find a receiver that can win one-on-one matchups like they had last year, guys like Terrell Harris and things of that nature. And then defensively, the worst kind of outing thus far, very surprising. How much they gave up on the run game, Hawkins and Cam Cook had their way. And so there was a lot of characteristics about the defense last week, and they have to go back to the film and they have to tighten it up because the copycat leads. So you do one thing wrong, a team's going to try to exploit that for the following week. They're not up against a running quarterback this week, but later down the line, quarterbacks like Ashton Daniels and such could give Virginia trouble.
00:11:04
Speaker 3: All right, man.
00:11:06
Speaker 1: Great to talk to you. Great job. You're doing on the ACC Network. Great job on this interview. And thank you for coming on, Rodney. Enjoy the game tomorrow, man.
00:11:15
Speaker 3: Thank you.
00:11:16
Speaker 4: I appreciate you guys.
00:11:18
Speaker 3: Thanks, Rodney.
00:11:18
Speaker 1: There you go, Rodney McLeod. He is now with the ACC Network. And somebody texted in, Bone, I didn't bring it up because of time constraints, but someone's like, ask him about his hit on Emmanuel Sanders. I had forgotten about this hit. He comes over, safety over the top. He's playing for the Rams, Sanders for the Broncos. This is back when Peyton Manning was the quarterback. And he just shalama-bams. Sanders and like Sanders is out for a minute there. And like, as he's laying there and you're like.
00:11:47
Speaker 2: Is he, is he awake? Like zero, the ref throws his hat on top of the manual. Insult to injury, man.
00:11:53
Speaker 3: Oh no. Insult to damn injury.
00:11:56
Speaker 1: Oh, man.
00:11:57
Speaker 3: All right.
00:11:58
Speaker 1: Keep the text coming about the football weekend, your thoughts on what's going on. He says he gives the advantage to Cal over Clemson. Keep the text coming, 704-570-9610. Doc on the text line said, look at the availability report. We're without a couple defensive tackles this week. So their run defense got gashed by 215, has been terrible. So has their pass defense. And now they've got more injuries up front, man. That is– That's a scary one. That's going to be like, you've got to stay under the covers tonight, Clemson fans watching this. Because I'm telling you, that's a scary little horror film tonight, Bone.
00:12:33
Speaker 2: Probably by themselves. We now have a— Clemson fans don't have any babes?
00:12:39
Speaker 3: Have you studied? Is that a study? They like to watch the games. I'm sure alone.
00:12:44
Speaker 2: Max, speaking of a man, but never alone. Always with us in spirit. That's Weatherman Mark 1-0. on his pep talk, so he gets another week this week. Damn straight he does. He brought the absolute sizzle last week to the radio program for the pep talk. Weatherman Mark back again. Marky, congrats on last week, man. You got the win for us.
00:13:06
Speaker 5: Yeah, thanks, man.
00:13:07
Speaker 6: Happy birthday to Granny Pat.
00:13:09
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:13:09
Speaker 1: Hell yeah, Granny. Happy birthday. All right, Mark, let it rip, baby. You went to levels of fire that we honestly didn't know you had last week. Fire us up. Fire the Panthers up. Give us the pep talk for the Browns game.
00:13:25
Speaker 4: Okay.
00:13:27
Speaker 6: Panthers going to get it done.
00:13:29
Speaker 5: They're going to get it done.
00:13:31
Speaker 6: They're going to get it done. We're going to Cleveland. We're going to get a bunch of frowns when we come to town because we're going.
00:13:43
Speaker 5: To find them too.
00:13:46
Speaker 7: You hear that drum?
00:13:48
Speaker 5: Boom, boom, boom. Keep pounding. Keep pounding. Keep pounding.
00:13:57
Speaker 6: Those Browns to the ground, baby. We're going to pound them to the ground. Take them to the end and kick that rear end.
00:14:08
Speaker 3: Boom, boom, boom.
00:14:10
Speaker 6: We're going to pound them to the ground. Pound the Browns to the ground.
00:14:15
Speaker 3: Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
00:14:19
Speaker 8: Go Panthers.
00:14:24
Speaker 3: Yeah, baby!
00:14:24
Speaker 9: I'm ready!
00:14:25
Speaker 3: Let's go get them, Panthers! Does that not fire y'all up? I'd like to make an adjustment.
00:14:30
Speaker 2: All right, Mark.
00:14:30
Speaker 3: Good job, baby. Good job. Panthers by 80. Oh, my God. Oh, God. I didn't know a song was coming. Where does this come from? I didn't know the song was coming this week. We put him on the round table. He doesn't do this stuff. Yeah, he does. He's got some fire and desire. He's got a little.
00:14:48
Speaker 2: Boom, boom, boom. Gonna beat those Browns. Did he say he's going to run it through their tum-tum at one point?
00:14:53
Speaker 3: I think that did happen at some point there. If he's gone, we've all seen him back there. I don't know. I don't know if he's going through to Hollywood, dog. I'm not sure. Oh, no, he's going past Hollywood. Oh, the text line. I'm afraid to read the text line, Bo. I'm afraid to read. Oh, my God. Can I have those two minutes back? I don't know. 704 number.
00:15:15
Speaker 2: I don't know if that's the best moment of my life, but it's not far off.
00:15:18
Speaker 3: Boom, boom, boom. Oh, my gosh. Anyway.
00:15:23
Speaker 2: He started working on that Monday. Yeah, you said he was well now. That was days of crafting. What do you think he was doing Monday?
00:15:29
Speaker 1: You think he was doing the lyrics or you think he was putting the music in, the boom, boom, booms?
00:15:33
Speaker 3: What lyrics back? No, you got to do it his way. A boom, boom, boom.
00:15:37
Speaker 1: Do you think he was doing the instrumental or was he writing the lyrics on Monday? I didn't need to know his process.
00:15:43
Speaker 2: This guy almost wrecked his car. He's laughing so hard. This guy wants to know if we can somehow give him his two minutes back.
00:15:50
Speaker 1: This texter says, please, I would pay personally Sirloin $ 100 to do the pep talks after hearing that. Sirloin himself is approving, though. Sirloin like the boom, boom, booms. Well, you know what the next step is. What's that?
00:16:03
Speaker 3: Sir white and weatherman mark together i'll.
00:16:05
Speaker 1: Get them together get mark doing some uh voice uh vocal instruments in the background boom boom.
00:16:10
Speaker 2: Boom sir white saying let me tell you something right now and then mark goes boom boom boom.
00:16:14
Speaker 1: Sir uh finney did did you get loin's birthday message he was giving to you Yes. I think because he doesn't get to do pep talks, he had to scream something, and he posted it on Twitter. It sounded very much like a pep talk, Bone. Woos involved, a lot of screaming involved.
00:16:30
Speaker 9: He also invited me to go to Tassel's last night.
00:16:32
Speaker 3: Oh, how about that? Talk about a woo. I couldn't do that, though. I was occupied. Oh, you've got to behave yourself now.
00:16:39
Speaker 1: But you were out eating a fine steak dinner with your lady, though, Fit.
00:16:43
Speaker 3: I did. Damn, you got your life coming together, Fit. Did she pay for the birthday meal?
00:16:46
Speaker 9: She did.
00:16:47
Speaker 3: Oh, Fit, you got a good one there, Fit. Damn, you got a good one. Boom, boom, boom.
00:16:52
Speaker 2: Did you order, like, were you respectful of the order, or did you just go all in on this?
00:16:56
Speaker 9: No, I got just a simple six-ounce steak.
00:16:59
Speaker 3: Six-ounce?
00:17:00
Speaker 8: Yeah.
00:17:01
Speaker 1: Yeah, you did go respectful. When Flounder bought the night before, did you stick to six ounces? He ordered eight, so I ordered eight.
00:17:08
Speaker 3: Okay, all right.
00:17:09
Speaker 9: Because if Flounder would have ordered a six-ounce steak, I would have ordered six. But he ordered first. He ordered eight. I said, well... I'm going to order eight. She wanted to call in and sing happy birthday to me yesterday.
00:17:18
Speaker 5: Oh, damn.
00:17:19
Speaker 3: How did we miss out on that?
00:17:20
Speaker 9: She is terrified of y'all.
00:17:22
Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. I can see that. Most women are.
00:17:24
Speaker 2: What's terrifying about this show?
00:17:26
Speaker 3: Shout out to Weatherman Mark. Boom, boom, boom. Tell her I'll do it. She sings it. I'll do the boom, boom, booms in the background. Oh, God.
00:17:37
Speaker 1: We got some characters out there listening to this damn show, man. Y'all crack me up.
00:17:44
Speaker 3: What is that? What's going on over there? Pull yourself together, Bo. You're going to sit at the break now. Pull yourself together over there, kid.
00:17:51
Speaker 2: Boom, boom, boom.
00:17:52
Speaker 3: He's sitting at the break, man. All right, I'm going to send it to break here.
00:17:56
Speaker 6: I beat myself.
00:17:57
Speaker 5: Bonus.
00:17:58
Speaker 2: I think I dribbled myself.
00:18:01
Speaker 1: When we come back, Zach Gelb joins us. I'm not sure he's going to do a music routine with the Boom Booms. What did he think of the Panthers' performance against the Falcons? And we got to ask him, does he think the Packers are absolute dog crap? Like, is that going to stick all season? We'll talk to Zach Gelb about the NFL next. And a little college football. Sports Radio 92.7 WFNZ. Oh, I need to sleep, Rick. Sports Radio 92.7 WFNZ. How do we, how do we top the last segment, Bone? Weatherman Mark's pep talk turned into some amazing musical extravaganza.
00:18:56
Speaker 3: It really did, baby. Nicely produced. It really did. It really did.
00:18:59
Speaker 1: All right, so we're going to try to top it, though, with Zach Gelb.
00:19:03
Speaker 3: I do want to mention, if you missed.
00:19:05
Speaker 1: um just a one-of-a-kind performance by weatherman mark or you missed any of the panther talk today the college football talk today it's been lively check out the podcast uh wfnz.com apple spotify wherever you get your podcast listen to it uh later today through the weekend Listen to more Mac and Bone Show. Let's bring in Zach Gelb and see what he thinks, Bone, about the Panthers. They've got the first dub of the season, beating up on old Cooper Rush and Jack Strand. We also have to have a Packer conversation after last night. And I'm sure we'll work some college football in, some big games in college football. And Tecate's coming up as well, right? Tecate's pick's coming up. He's asked me if he can do a bonus pick. He wants to do four this week. So I told him I'd give him a bonus. pick this week. Yeah, that's fine. Just not 104 like he wrote down. He needs to narrow them down from 100 to three, and it's kind of tough. But let's bring in Gelby right now. Zach Gelb, very cool news that you informed me of, Bone. He's working with NFL Radio now, Compass Media. He's in the studio for these NFL games, including Ravens and Cowboys on Sunday, and we're talking ball with him right now.
00:20:13
Speaker 3: Zach Gelb. Gelby, what's going on, brother? How you feeling? Guys, I'm doing well.
00:20:18
Speaker 8: B plus.
00:20:19
Speaker 7: I forgot about the victory dance video. So I was on hold.
00:20:22
Speaker 8: I was trying to locate it bone tweets too much. So it took me way too long to find it, but I eventually did. And here's my breakdown. The old geezer in the beginning was a good addition. Bone starting to look a little bit like a woman, a nice backside on him. And Matt, I think you've lost a few pounds.
00:20:39
Speaker 7: You're looking good, brother.
00:20:39
Speaker 1: How about that, baby? I'll take it. I'll take it, man. What doubt there's no for your compliment.
00:20:43
Speaker 8: Also.
00:20:44
Speaker 1: I think it's a compliment. How's there no comment on Finney. I feel like he was very notable in that dance.
00:20:50
Speaker 7: Oh, I only got through the first 30 seconds. Did Fitty come.
00:20:52
Speaker 8: In at the end with the bra on?
00:20:54
Speaker 3: Yeah.
00:20:54
Speaker 2: Actually, you know what? Talk about nice backsides. Actually, close that out right now. We actually have a controversy right now with Fitty, Zach. We'll bring you in real quick. He's got a new girlfriend. She took him out for a birthday. His birthday was yesterday. She took him out to dinner, paid for it. So she was paying for it. So Fitty only ordered... a six ounce steak to be respectful that she was paying for. And our text line is now saying, Finney's not a real man. Real men don't order less than 12 ounce steaks. The guy's getting shredded, Gobi, but he's trying to be a nice guy.
00:21:26
Speaker 8: .
00:21:34
Speaker 3: .
00:21:35
Speaker 8: .
00:21:39
Speaker 7: .
00:21:40
Speaker 8: So get whatever you want. Cause you're going to have to give her so much more through the year. And here's the crazy point.
00:21:47
Speaker 3: That's a good point.
00:21:48
Speaker 8: My girlfriend this year took me out for a lovely dinner down at the Jersey shore. My parents called the restaurant and paid for the bill. And they thought they were being nice.
00:21:57
Speaker 7: I said, guys, you know, wait for another day. This is the one time she actually has to pay.
00:22:01
Speaker 3: What are we doing here?
00:22:02
Speaker 1: Oh, she must've loved that. That's hilarious.
00:22:07
Speaker 3: That's rough. Gelby. That is rough there. Nice parents.
00:22:11
Speaker 8: It's like being a Falcons fan.
00:22:16
Speaker 3: Or as being a Packer fan.
00:22:17
Speaker 1: Even worse, I wonder. Let's start with that and then we'll get to the Panthers. I mean, does Michael Penix make that much of a difference? Like, what did you think of last night's game?
00:22:27
Speaker 3: And I mean, is Green Bay just horrid? I mean, God, that was brutal.
00:22:32
Speaker 7: Well, the Packers, they, they can't block.
00:22:35
Speaker 8: They don't even try to run the football and they can't defend the run. So you can't do those three things. You're not going to win many games in this league. And, you know, in March or April, I said a take people were looking like for bold predictions. And I got, I don't think the Packers are gonna make the playoffs this year. I didn't think it was that bold of a take because they've been teetering.
00:22:52
Speaker 7: On missing the playoffs the last two years.
00:22:54
Speaker 8: I didn't know what was going to happen with Josh Jacobs at the time, but Micah Parsons wasn't going to be there to start the season. And I just didn't love what I was seeing with this team. I like, here's the thing. I, and I said this on NFL radio last night, Falcons fans should be excited that they're now back in the mix. Let's see what they do up against the same. So they could even this out to two and two next week, or if they're just going to go to one and three, but I'm not this big believer in Michael Penix jr. But if you just get competent quarterback play and he started off the game poorly through the interception was one to five and then relied on Bijan found Drake London did a nice job, and they were able to get the victory. Last night, yes, it does save the Falcons' season, but I think it's more of an indictment on the Packers than, oh my goodness gracious, the Falcons are this force to.
00:23:37
Speaker 4: Be reckoned with.
00:23:38
Speaker 2: As far as the Panthers go, Gelby, quite a different feeling and different vibes right now when we talk Panthers. When you watch this Panthers offense, how sustainable, within reason obviously, but how sustainable do you think this offensive start is for Bryce Young and this offense?
00:23:56
Speaker 1: Yeah.
00:23:57
Speaker 8: I don't think they're going to be scoring 34, 35 points each and every week, but this is the continuation of the, of the, just the Bryce young train moving in the right direction. And I know the last year and a half, he's taken some massive strides and now you just want to see the consistency, but offensively the first two weeks, you couldn't ask for much more. I know you would have liked to got the first win to start off the season. And the defense was just horrific, but the two wide receivers and I know Ted one rookie of the year last year, um, are, are playing really well. Uh, Bryce is, is doing what they're asking him to do. And, but the thing is, and I don't know if you guys have this take, um, and, and you guys watch it more intently than me, they got to get more on the ground, uh, rushing the football. They need a little bit more of that balance.
00:24:39
Speaker 3: Definitely.
00:24:40
Speaker 8: And that's something that's going to be a work in progress. But through the first two games, just offensively, yeah, you've got to be a pig rolling in doo-doo with the way that their offense is playing.
00:24:49
Speaker 3: No doubt. I like how Gelb resorts to things that we just relate to. Oh, yeah, take a doo-doo. There you go. You're speaking our language, Gelb. Zach Gelb is with us talking football. I know my target audience.
00:24:57
Speaker 8: True, very true.
00:24:58
Speaker 1: Talking football with Gelb as we do every Friday. So, Gelb, I mean, I hesitate to ask this two weeks in, but we've been talking about.
00:25:05
Speaker 3: Ourselves, so I'm going to bring you in on it.
00:25:08
Speaker 1: Like, do you feel like, yeah, Bryce is this dude now? Or do you still have part of you that is like, he's been inconsistent. I don't know if he can keep this sort of thing up. Like, how are you viewing what you've seen from him two weeks in?
00:25:23
Speaker 8: Well, like if you're asking me, should they go pay him 55, $ 60 million a year? And do I feel like he's a 55, $ 60 million a year quarterback? I don't, but he's been good. And that's the thing. Like, there's just a lot of quarterbacks that are just good. You know, in the NFL, like I don't look at Bryce right now and say, oh my God. he's definitely a top 10 quarterback, but could he be eventually a fringe top 10 quarterback? I guess he can be so, but this is a guy that was thrown into a corner. Everyone thought his career was over. Everyone thought he was a bust CJ Stroud's better and he's playing better than, than CJ Stroud right now. And the last year and a half, he saved his career. And I just, as we said, even, you know, at the end of last season, don't give him a contract extension and let's see where we are at the end of this season. But through the first two weeks, Man, what is there really to critique with the individual play of Bryce Young? I don't have much.
00:26:16
Speaker 2: Zach, how much better do you feel about the defense compared to week one? And where do you think the truth may lie with the defense? Is it somewhere in between? Or do you think this defense can be pretty damn good based off what you saw last week?
00:26:30
Speaker 7: Speaker 0 5th.
00:26:30
Speaker 8: Yeah.
00:26:30
Speaker 7: It's tough.
00:26:30
Speaker 8: Cause I know everyone slammed them after the Chicago game. I don't think they were as bad as what they put on performance up against Chicago, but then on the other side with the crappy quarterback that you guys were going up against last week, I don't think that that as dominant as they are.
00:26:44
Speaker 7: So there's probably somewhere in between.
00:26:47
Speaker 8: And if this could be, you know, a top 15 defense, you know, maybe they could creep into the top 10. You know, I liked the moves that they They made this off.
00:26:53
Speaker 7: Season, bringing in Devin Lloyd.
00:26:55
Speaker 8: Bobby O'Kerrick has been around the league for a while. He's a real solid football player coming over from the giants. And before that being a tackle machine with the Indianapolis Colts, but if they could just get average defensive play, which they're more than capable of doing. And the offense continues to light it up the way that.
00:27:10
Speaker 4: They have been.
00:27:11
Speaker 8: Why can't they go nine and eight? Like why can't they go maybe 10 and seven and win this division? Like right now, when I look.
00:27:18
Speaker 7: At it, the two best teams in this division are are.
00:27:20
Speaker 8: The saints and, and the Panthers. I picked the saints to win the division before the season started. And I really liked what I'm seeing by Tyler shock. I think I said last night that they were two and oh, and it almost felt like that win week one, that lost week one was a win up against Detroit. But that's, you know, that they're a team that I liked their quarterback. I liked their running backs.
00:27:39
Speaker 7: They got good wide receivers.
00:27:40
Speaker 8: Yeah. I know Tyson is out right now and they have a solid defense, but I, it feels like right now it's the saints and the Panthers in this division. I know the Falcons stabilized thing last night, but I'm not still totally bought in on them. And then man, the box, that was a rough one last week up against Cleveland.
00:27:57
Speaker 3: No doubt.
00:27:57
Speaker 2: Now. Okay.
00:27:58
Speaker 1: So the Panthers got Cleveland this week. What, um, how do you view this as like, should we be concerned to Sean Watson actually played a good game last week?
00:28:07
Speaker 3: How do you think, how do you evaluate Panthers and Browns?
00:28:11
Speaker 8: Like we just got into the conversation. Are the Panthers a good football team? We'll find out this weekend because good football teams beat up on inferior football teams, specifically when the inferior football team just got this victory and they're going to be riding high. We know Cleveland has a good defense offensively.
00:28:27
Speaker 5: I have zero.
00:28:28
Speaker 8: Respect for Deshaun Watson. I know that he won the game last week. you know, I'll give him credit for a week and he could show you some of those old flashes, but I do not think that that's going to be sustainable through the course of a 17 game season. And I believe you'll have more week one Deshaun Watson than week two Deshaun Watson. So if the Panthers are really turning this thing in the right direction. you don't only just beat Cleveland, you beat them comfortably this weekend.
00:28:53
Speaker 3: I like it, Gelby. I like it, man. Gelby pumping us up a little bit here.
00:28:56
Speaker 2: We'll be following all your thoughts on social media, on Twitter, at ZachGel. We encourage all the listeners to give you a follow for all your takes. I think they might actually send nice tweets to you. You're talking nice about the Panthers.
00:29:09
Speaker 3: Kelby. I like this.
00:29:11
Speaker 8: Here's the thing, Mac, you know, you look like a Vanna white standing next to bone and Fitty in that video.
00:29:18
Speaker 2: Now we're talking about that. People call me very white. Oh, somebody asked somebody very white.
00:29:26
Speaker 8: Somebody has asked how my friends at a Lake Norman doing this year. My buddy who I grew up with Spencer Lasker is one of their offensive line coach. I saw their quarterback, Caden craft.
00:29:35
Speaker 7: Committed to Tennessee. So, you know, isn't.
00:29:38
Speaker 5: That your school bone?
00:29:39
Speaker 2: No, Well, it's this, it's the school that is near me. I did not go there. You claim them though. Bone is your favorite or you went off.
00:29:46
Speaker 9: Yeah.
00:29:47
Speaker 3: They're five and Oh, Gelby. They're balling dude.
00:29:50
Speaker 7: Yeah, and Coach Lasker has him stout up front.
00:29:54
Speaker 8: And I know this, that quarterback, man, I've been following him the last two years.
00:29:59
Speaker 7: He's a player. He got a lot of big-time offers, and he ended up going to Tennessee.
00:30:03
Speaker 2: He's a player. They've won by 47, 28, 49, 41, and then seven last week. Now that I know they're undefeated, Gelby, then they are my team.
00:30:11
Speaker 3: They beat my son's high school 47-0, Gelby. It was ugly.
00:30:15
Speaker 5: Good.
00:30:16
Speaker 2: Good.
00:30:16
Speaker 7: They should have run up the score a little bit.
00:30:18
Speaker 4: Oh, my gosh.
00:30:20
Speaker 7: I used to do these segments and that we would talk about no offenses. Now we've got two teams in town that can't, they keep on scoring the prices going up and up and up.
00:30:30
Speaker 1: And even 50 scoring now, you know what I mean?
00:30:32
Speaker 3: There's so much scoring here, baby.
00:30:33
Speaker 2: I have a late Norman T-shirt at home. There you go. There you go.
00:30:37
Speaker 3: I Galby enjoy the football brother.
00:30:40
Speaker 7: You got it, guys.
00:30:41
Speaker 8: I'll talk to you next week.
00:30:41
Speaker 3: All right. There you go.
00:30:42
Speaker 1: Zach Gelb, who even has a favorite high school here in the Charlotte metro area.
00:30:46
Speaker 3: Imagine that. All right. Fit, did we do your updates?
00:30:51
Speaker 2: I'm old.
00:30:51
Speaker 3: We got Picante here. Oh, Picante. Oh, crap. I forgot about Picante, dude.
00:30:56
Speaker 2: Yep. Oh, man.
00:30:58
Speaker 3: My bad. That's why I kept talking. He's there, right, Fit? Or he's trying to get them now. He's getting in the line. Oh, that's on me, man.
00:31:04
Speaker 2: I forgot. I was wondering why you wanted to wrap that up. I was just going to keep talking to Galby about it. Yeah, we mentioned Picante, I don't know, right when that segment started.
00:31:12
Speaker 3: Yeah, we did. My memory's horrible, dude. I'm going to tell you something I did yesterday. It's embarrassing.
00:31:17
Speaker 1: And maybe my mom's memory's really rough right now. I'm afraid I'm headed down the same path. I sat my phone. I went to the bathroom. I sat my phone on the thing that holds the toilet paper. You had a toilet paper holder.
00:31:29
Speaker 8: Yeah.
00:31:29
Speaker 3: I mean, why wouldn't you do that?
00:31:31
Speaker 1: So I sat my phone on that, went to the bathroom and left and thought, oh yeah, I didn't bring my phone in here with me. When two minutes before I sat it down in the bathroom, I'm like, where is my brain, bro? It must be the IPAs killing the damn brain cells. Haven't you left your phone in the bathroom here a lot? Yeah, about 17 times.
00:31:50
Speaker 5: Seriously.
00:31:51
Speaker 9: You left it in here yesterday, and I've got it for you.
00:31:53
Speaker 1: That's where it was. I, like, thought it was, like, oh, no, that's a separate. I did that twice yesterday. I forgot about that. I left my phone in here, didn't know where it was. Before that, in the morning, I left it in the bathroom, didn't know where it was.
00:32:07
Speaker 2: We got to get to Picante because he's got to get off the phone line to text us.
00:32:10
Speaker 3: I'm like Grandpa, bro. All right, Picante's ready now.
00:32:13
Speaker 1: Let's do it baby let's do it picante gets a bonus pick this week he did have his first losing week last week one and two but we're sticking with this man we believe there is gold to be mined with his picks picante's picks baby what's up picante what's going.
00:32:27
Speaker 5: On welcome back guys oh my god what a week what a terrible.
00:32:32
Speaker 3: Week man you had a rough week last week.
00:32:35
Speaker 5: Oh, man, my personal pick, he was even worse. It was like six out of 17. My wife didn't even cook. It was bad.
00:32:43
Speaker 3: But you had no money to cook with. You lost it all.
00:32:48
Speaker 5: I asked her, I was like, so what are you making on Sunday? And she was like, I'm not making any cookies. And I'm like, damn, man.
00:32:55
Speaker 2: We got to get you back to the big piece of chicken, brother. What's the four picks, Pee?
00:33:01
Speaker 5: All right, my first one, so we cannot wait for the weekend. It will be Temple today, plus three and a half.
00:33:07
Speaker 3: Okay. Who are you picking?
00:33:09
Speaker 5: Temple. Temple against Army, four o'clock, plus three and a half. Temple's playing really well. This is the first game that they're not going to play like a big team. All right. The next one will be Wake Forest and Louisville on the over. He's being magnificent. So I like that game on the over in a shootout. Maybe wait for it. We'll make it close. But I think Luke is a better team. But on the over, 57 and a half.
00:33:42
Speaker 3: Okay. I like that. I like that.
00:33:45
Speaker 5: My second one will be my boo, Drew Missmaker. You can't quit him, man. No, no. I mean, he's been great. Come on, guys.
00:33:56
Speaker 3: That's true.
00:33:57
Speaker 5: I'm going with another shootout there, 59 and a half. The line went up to 61 and a half, so I'm going to go with 61 and a half on the over.
00:34:06
Speaker 3: You love yourself some overs, don't you?
00:34:09
Speaker 2: Are you related to him by some chance?
00:34:14
Speaker 5: Wait for the last one then. It's going to be the biggest over, though.
00:34:18
Speaker 3: Okay.
00:34:19
Speaker 5: So my last one will be Oregon against USC over 61 and a half. America cannot live without Oregon being out of the playoff so early. So I believe this is going to be a battle.
00:34:34
Speaker 3: I like that. Both defenses have issues. I like that one. You have Temple, then you have the Overs.
00:34:38
Speaker 5: I really put a thought about it. I need to go 4-0 so I can make it next week. But if not, man, it's been great, man. It's been amazing.
00:34:45
Speaker 3: Hey, we might keep you going, baby. We might not quit on you.
00:34:48
Speaker 2: So you have Temple and the Overs in Wake, Louisville, Oklahoma State, West Virginia, Oregon, USA.
00:34:54
Speaker 3: There you go. Wait, wait, wait.
00:34:56
Speaker 5: Tempo is actually game, plus three and a half.
00:34:58
Speaker 3: Okay, three and a half. Tempo plus three and a half. There you go. He's the only one that I have in game.
00:35:04
Speaker 1: We have a texter that's weighing in. He says, we could just save some time and just say, Picante likes every college football over this week.
00:35:15
Speaker 3: All right, brother. May the points be scored, man. All right. Good luck.
00:35:18
Speaker 5: All right. Thank you, guys. Thank you so much. All right.
00:35:20
Speaker 3: There you go.
00:35:20
Speaker 1: Picante picks, man. Trying to bounce back after last week's one and two.
00:35:24
Speaker 3: We come back.
00:35:24
Speaker 2: It's the wrap-up on Sports Radio 92.7 WFNZ.
00:35:39
Speaker 3: The Browns is the Browns. Browns are going to Browns that.
00:35:48
Speaker 4: Okay. So the guys took that to heart. Thank you.
00:35:53
Speaker 3: Thank you. Oh man. Another way.
00:35:56
Speaker 1: I said earlier in the week bone, one of my goals is to have the Browns fans booing Deshaun Watson. That's that'll be a sign that our defense is all over them.
00:36:04
Speaker 5: Right.
00:36:04
Speaker 3: Making them look bad. Not like last week.
00:36:07
Speaker 1: The other thing I'm looking for is I want to beat the Browns in a way that Mike Tomlin is dropping that line. Again, the Browns is the Browns. That's what I want. I want to see that on Sunday night football. We'll see. It seems like we all, well, Finney went three scores galore. Bone and I seem like we have similar scores. What was your final score, Bone?
00:36:26
Speaker 2: 20 to 10, but maybe 23 to 10. I'm working on it here.
00:36:29
Speaker 3: I had 20. What did I have?
00:36:30
Speaker 2: 24, 13.
00:36:30
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:36:35
Speaker 1: I couldn't remember where my phone was yesterday. I can't remember my pick. Man, help out old grandpa over here.
00:36:41
Speaker 3: Am I Salania? Am I freaking Salania?
00:36:43
Speaker 2: There'll be a segment on the show at some point where we have to ask the audience, do we take Max Keys from him yet?
00:36:52
Speaker 3: Oh, man. All right. Anyway, looking forward to it.
00:36:55
Speaker 2: You're not having incontinence problems, are you? What does that mean?
00:36:58
Speaker 8: What?
00:37:00
Speaker 3: Incontinence. Like, you're not going to the bathroom, like, in your pants, are you? No, no. My dog has that, though.
00:37:05
Speaker 1: Rocket keeps pooping. He pooped on the floor yesterday. He just leaves a nugget there, dude.
00:37:09
Speaker 3: Just a nugget.
00:37:09
Speaker 1: That's all he leaves. No big piles. But the nugget in my daughter's bed the other night, nugget on the floor. I mean, watch out. If Murphy starts that, you've got a real problem over there, Bone. All right. Let's get to the text, shall we? I think I say we wrap this up. Let someone else do this radio thing. We're getting silly. Thank you. Appreciate everybody here. Appreciate Weatherman Mark with that amazing singing pep talk. Appreciate all of y'all tuning in on this show today. Gelby as well. Lee Sterling for joining us and Rodney McLeod. KB and I will be at Twin Peaks in Fort Mill right by Carowinds. 11 a.m. to 1, getting you ready for the game. Countdown to kickoff. You can hear it on WFNZ or come out and see us live. What's going on in sports tonight? You got Indiana Northwestern at 8. You got Clemson and Cal at 1030. Some good college football tonight, Bone.
00:38:02
Speaker 3: Ain't bad for a Friday.
00:38:03
Speaker 2: And then next week starts the baseball postseason for the Braves. We're going to have a guest on the show Tuesday to preview that. So I think the best sports time of the year, Mac, love March Madness and all that. But October, when all of the sports start to converge together, October is my favorite sports month, I think.
00:38:23
Speaker 3: Yeah, I would like it.
00:38:24
Speaker 2: March is right there, too, except when, you know, kind of things end up going, you have a lead, you know. Or in April, sometimes you have a lead and then, you know what I'm saying?
00:38:33
Speaker 3: I would like October. I get you. I feel you.
00:38:35
Speaker 1: I would like October more if my team was actually in the baseball playoffs. That'd be a nice twist to things. Well, I just meant all the basketballs right there around the corner.
00:38:43
Speaker 3: You got hockey. Yeah, I see what you're saying. You got the Canes starting on Tuesday night as well next week. I see what you're saying. We got a big FC game tomorrow, too, at the bank against Chicago. And FC's going this weekend. Let's get some of these. You don't say.
00:38:54
Speaker 9: Can't wait for that FC match.
00:38:55
Speaker 3: Let's get some of these.
00:38:56
Speaker 8: Oh!
00:38:57
Speaker 1: Willie's going to kick your ass. And I'm like, matter of fact, Willie and I together.
00:39:00
Speaker 3: Willie, come down here. Let's kick this dude's ass.
00:39:02
Speaker 1: I just said I couldn't wait for it. It'll be on the third screen tomorrow night. Don't be sarcastic about that. I don't like that tone. I don't like that tone.
00:39:08
Speaker 9: They're trying to play for top four positioning, Mac.
00:39:11
Speaker 3: Thank you. They are, sir.
00:39:12
Speaker 1: They could move up even higher than that. All right, let's read a couple of texts real quick. Bebop says, amazing. Granny Pat and America both celebrating their 250th birthdays this year.
00:39:21
Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
00:39:23
Speaker 1: That is cold, Bob. Jay Ricard says, I share a birthday with Granny Pat. I might start drinking now. You know she has. jay ricard you know she has uh gas house earl says um i'm not going three scores galore but how about three field goes for show.
00:39:41
Speaker 9: I think it went 1910.
00:39:43
Speaker 3: I think he just wanted you to say it. I said it for you, baby.
00:39:46
Speaker 2: Oh, Matt, Bicycle Herd says, Bone and fellas, how did the Bojangles donuts go with the, well, he says Campbell sauce. That was a typo by me. With the caramel sauce. Yeah, Bojangles is taste testing mini donuts. They taste like biscuits. In the Charlotte area right now. Yeah, they're pretty good. They're kind of like biscuits, it feels like. With sugar all over them. You dump them in that caramel. That's good stuff. When y'all left, there were still three in the box. Yeah.
00:40:10
Speaker 9: I polished those bad boys off at 1130 yesterday.
00:40:13
Speaker 1: Of course you did, because you were going to be only eating a six-ounce steak at night.
00:40:19
Speaker 3: Let's see here.
00:40:20
Speaker 1: This texter says, happy birthday, Granny Pat. Go on with your feisty, fine ass. That is from Delvis the Rock.
00:40:29
Speaker 9: I'm uncomfortable with that text.
00:40:30
Speaker 2: Yeah, wow, juice.
00:40:31
Speaker 1: Jethro says, Granny Pat, go enjoy some vittles and that jug next to the C-Mod pie.
00:40:37
Speaker 3: C-Mod Pond, love Jethro.
00:40:40
Speaker 2: Why did Granny say she's taking one of our mothers to Freedom Park today?
00:40:45
Speaker 3: One of our mothers. It just says, I'll take your mom to Freedom Park, but there's no context to that. Hey now, granny. Settle yourself, girl. Settle yourself down.
00:40:52
Speaker 1: We have a texter that says, Gelb just called Bone a big booty Judy.
00:40:55
Speaker 3: Yeah, what was he saying about you, Bone?
00:40:57
Speaker 2: I don't know.
00:40:57
Speaker 3: I don't really have. You can see my rumpus. I don't really have much of one there.
00:41:01
Speaker 9: No, this show does not have a lot of backside.
00:41:06
Speaker 3: No.
00:41:06
Speaker 9: That's on the afternoons.
00:41:07
Speaker 1: All right.
00:41:11
Speaker 3: We'll leave it at that, everybody. We'll leave it at that. Give me the meat.
00:41:14
Speaker 1: Appreciate y'all hanging out. Have a great freaking football weekend. Keep pounding. We'll talk about it all on Monday. Good job out of Bone. Good job out of Fitty. And good job out of Weatherman, Mark, even if the reviews aren't favorable. All right, on the text line. Great job, baby.
00:41:30
Speaker 3: Colin Ogard, Charlotte Sports Today, coming up next. Ladies and gentlemen, the weekend.
