00:00:03
Speaker 1: Oh, Owen's Mack and Bow on your radio, BAF my frame back, Posh, Come on Posh in my frame team, Bone, what's up the fun?
00:00:14
Speaker 2: I can't go to work without listening to Mack.
00:00:17
Speaker 1: And Bone do a lot.
00:00:30
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I don't think they've changed at all. I think that I'm gonna continue to strive to be a thousand yard receiver. That's what you know, I always wanted to accomplish. So, I mean, that was my goal coming in as a rookie. Of my goal last year, That'll be my goal this year. And it's just gonna whatever I can do to help the team is what I'm is what I'm gonna try my best to do. So if that's you know, if that looks like six hundred yards, and it doesn't matter to me as long as we're winning football games, and I'll continue to just put my best foot forward.
00:00:58
Speaker 4: There you go.
00:00:58
Speaker 5: Jalen Coker, talking about his goal, says he still wants that thousand yard season. Stay healthy, big fella, and I think you could get close to that. If not there. Looking forward to seeing him and Bryce continue to develop their chemistry. They had some great moments the other night at FanFest. That was Coker talking after FanFest. Coker had a moment that wasn't so great that he was able to laugh about afterwards. We're gonna get to here in a second. I wasn't laughing at this. It was so it was so funny given the context. But we've also got to talk about the prolific passing game Bryce, Kenny Pickett. I ain't joking, man. Kenny Pickett was out there slinging, especially to Bryce and Tremaine late in practice. It was a fun night Panther fan Fest, and we're gonna talk about what I want to hear from y'all. Two on the Panther FanFest fan experience, forty seven thousand people there to watch.
00:01:52
Speaker 6: A practice were talking about practice. That's as close as I can get. Bone, That's all I got hold on here. Why is your Alan Iverson turning into Jima talking about practice, practice, practice, a game, practice, practice, playoffs.
00:02:10
Speaker 4: Do you think I'm combining the two together?
00:02:12
Speaker 6: You've got the ivers words voice.
00:02:17
Speaker 5: We talked about this earlier, Bone, and I would hope I would think we're going to get some of the same feedback from y'all that if you were, if you were among the forty seven thousand on Friday Night these last two years. The way they've done it, and I do think that they are the way that they're thinking might be. We got to give you something fun. We got to make this night better for fans because you can't come out to any training camp practices.
00:02:41
Speaker 4: And that'll change next year.
00:02:42
Speaker 5: The field house, the indoor practice untility to be done and fans will be back out at training camp. But I do think that's part of what Dave Canalis has done the last couple of years, trying to make it like an innsquad scrimmage, essentially keeping score. I think that's probably part of it, but it really does make it better. Canalis too gets it, takes the microphone and we have timed at the last two years bone so by the time that we are rolling in there, it's Dave Canalis on the microphone saying, Okay, we've warmed up, we're ready to start the scrimmage.
00:03:15
Speaker 6: But they just get it. It's such a cool fan event, man, it really is. It's also built for canals. It's upbeat, it's positive. Yeah, a lot of energy, so he does really well in that environment. There's not a lot of downtime as opposed to regimes of the past. But there's a lot of individual drills, want of warm ups, want to stand in a lot of walking.
00:03:35
Speaker 4: But at least by the time we get there, I know they do warm up.
00:03:38
Speaker 6: But once this event gets going, it's just like watching a scrimmage two football teams playing, rather than going through all the running through the motions of the drills they used to do big time.
00:03:48
Speaker 4: Yeah, you're right.
00:03:49
Speaker 6: Really to kind of be like, all right, we're gonna do these drills for the fans, even though we're just kind of doing them half speed.
00:03:54
Speaker 4: Yeah, it was. This feels more like real football now. Listen.
00:03:58
Speaker 5: I saw the time that that Lathan Ransom could have lit up Coker on one of those passes that Bryce hit him at downfield. There were a lot of times where you see, okay, the defense has got a layoff, guys. Right, there was one the deep ball from Pickett to Tremaine at the end. It's like he probably could have been hit there. But so it does favor the offense. So when I keep telling you how good Bryce looked to Pickett was slinging it, you know, the t Mac and Coker had big nights takeing with a grand assault too, because the defense is kind of not necessarily a favor in that. But I did notice defensive plays too. Princely was in the backfield a ton, which is a good sign. He's one of the number one guys we want to watch this preseason. Will Lee covering T Mack had a real nice pass breakup cam Gill's. Another guy had to look up the roster. Who the heck is that? Oh, he's in the backfield again, cam Gill. So there are some guys, but mostly Bone. It was an offensive show passing game show. Corey Dillon had a pretty ridiculous cat yllan AJ Dillon Corey Dillon. AJ Dillon had a pretty ridicul catch out of the backfield. Had a couple catches out of the backfield. But they just do it. It's just fun like it really, I gotta be honest with you. In the pass bone fan fest, you get there, you'd be like, oh, yeah, it's just practice. They do the best to make this feel almost like, I don't know, like a college football spring game used to feel like, right, you know, very good comparison.
00:05:21
Speaker 6: dB and Devin Lloyd did not play. They got vet days and Horn and Mike Jack were there in the first half, and they came off for the second half. So it's not like you saw all the guys for very long, but you saw you saw enough to make yourself feel anticipation for the season, rather than fan fest off the past, where you felt like the fan base was sitting ground like they were about to walk the Green mile man, like, oh no, we have to watch this team the whole year. It feels like there's an excitement in an anticipation for what this team can be big out of unknown.
00:05:57
Speaker 4: But that's all right. It's gonna be a fun season.
00:05:59
Speaker 5: I think the injuries have bummed us out a little bit, but I do believe bone we will get our panther spirit back. I get that and get the excitement back because we are defending a division championship. I don't know if anybody's noticed. That's not normal around here of Lake, not normal.
00:06:17
Speaker 4: Division.
00:06:19
Speaker 5: Thank you, sir, Thank you, sir. I appreciate that Monroe Freeling was out there. People are asking uh, and I thought he held up fairly well. He's going against Phillips a lot, so he is getting a dang education, man.
00:06:32
Speaker 6: No doubt about it. He's going to get a big education soon. When he sees Will Anderson for the scrimmage. Yes, in the joint sessions.
00:06:41
Speaker 5: Anderson, Daniel Hunter and now Jenevian Clowney, they go. They go three deep now at edge rushers after signing Clowney. All right, let's get into some of the sounds of the night. Let's start with Jalen Coker's moment bone that didn't go so well. Dave Canalis also understanding it's supposed to be a fun night, he wants to dial up some trick plays. They actually had a fourth down fake field goal to uh Felipe Franks that worked beautifully. By the way, fits money nailing multiple fifty plus yard field goals won't give him a little love as well. But they tried a Jalen Cocher pass play and listen to Jalen Coker, the ball was thrown right to j C.
00:07:21
Speaker 4: Horn. It was ugly.
00:07:23
Speaker 5: Listen to Jalen Coker talk about that play.
00:07:26
Speaker 3: See you got one on you? Oh yeah, yeah, of course.
00:07:32
Speaker 7: You know.
00:07:34
Speaker 3: You shouldn't have been there basically, but no, I probably just got to throw that at a bound but sweet pain to do though.
00:07:43
Speaker 4: Were you excited that that play was called.
00:07:45
Speaker 3: And yeah, of course I was excited. I was disappointed with the result, definitely, but but no, yeah, I think just for the coaching staff to trust me in a position like that, I know it's just fan Fest, but you know, down the line, hopefully we can work some of that stuff in. I think I still got some some stuff left in the tank. But yeah, no, I think it's just a again. They just believe in me.
00:08:06
Speaker 5: The best part about this fitty is that Bone said in the office the other day after watching Jalen.
00:08:12
Speaker 4: Coker set it on the air, Oh, did you say it on the air? Yes? Oh, I thought it was off the air. No, you called this. You wanted this.
00:08:21
Speaker 6: Because the video went viral where he flips the ball with his foot last week and caught it behind his back. Then he wants to throw down the field with quarterback leg Armstright and I said, oh man, they need to put that. Maybe it was it not on the air.
00:08:36
Speaker 4: I can't remember it's on The lines are blurring right now.
00:08:39
Speaker 6: Anyway, which you suggested they need to work this play into the playbook, and they, sure enough they did it at fan Fast.
00:08:46
Speaker 4: It was so funny.
00:08:47
Speaker 5: He comes around, they give him the ball running around right and we're like, oh, there it is there, it is Coker's gonna throw and literally six yards downfield right to j. C.
00:08:58
Speaker 4: Horn now Jayleen Cocher.
00:09:00
Speaker 5: Because they couldn't let him off bone with just a couple of answers, they had to get more answers about Jyalen Cocher throwing a ball?
00:09:09
Speaker 4: Uh is it in his future? Listen? Listen to listen to some more of this.
00:09:15
Speaker 8: Did they come to you and like, hey, we want you to run.
00:09:17
Speaker 3: I was hoping that my throwing on the sideline would have would have sparked it, and it did and now it's you know, now we're gonna have to rebuild again. But it's all right, it's okay.
00:09:26
Speaker 2: Though we've seen you throw probably thirty thirty five yards in practice with the trainer, like, how how much confidence do you have in that arm?
00:09:33
Speaker 7: Oh?
00:09:33
Speaker 3: I have a lot of confidence, A lot of confidence for sure. Played one game of quarterback in high school, so I'm basically like vested. But uh but no, yeah, I mean whatever the team asked me to do. One game, go oh we lost for like three hundred yards and just couldn't get in then zone.
00:09:53
Speaker 7: Though after that time.
00:09:55
Speaker 3: No, No, he didn't say anything, but I eye contact. I could tell he's gonna.
00:10:00
Speaker 6: He's getting peppered about this throw. He's having a blast though talking about it. I so Bone, you were alone. I said it on the air on Friday. Okay, so you weren't alone. People are now mad at you for not listening to my ideas on the air.
00:10:12
Speaker 4: I just it all rid, guys.
00:10:13
Speaker 5: I hang out with Bone and the offices here like it all runs together.
00:10:17
Speaker 4: Man, sometimes it all runs together. Where did Bone tell me that? I don't know.
00:10:22
Speaker 6: Let me say this. I have good ideas on the ear and off the air. Yes, it doesn't matter. It could be either way. But Canalis and Inzick they saw the same thing. Jalen says they saw it and throw and practice said we got to put something in for you, so we'll see. I still think they could go to something with him. I'm not to turn Bone, and I don't think you should be either. I still think with that arm they could go to something at some point mid season, give him one more shot.
00:10:48
Speaker 4: I think J. C. Horn knew was coming. It's part of the problem with this.
00:10:52
Speaker 5: It should He's right though, it should have been thrown out of bounds. It's just the arm's good. The decision making not good. Apparently that's the review.
00:11:00
Speaker 6: Maybe we put maybe we put this away until we and then we forget about it and bust it out later on. I think you gotta do it, man, all you gotta. Don't you use this week one? So now now give him some time. You better breathe a little bit, all right? So seven four five, seven oh nine six cent. If you have thoughts, if you're at FanFest, what'd you think of a fan It's also it's an awesome family event too.
00:11:20
Speaker 5: It's a real cool family event. And then they bring out Asher Harvey six years old, give him to make a wish moment where he gets to play quarterback and finish the game off by running the ball in from one yard out. Like it's just it's just stuff like that. Man, it's just a fun night. There's so many kids there that got the legends doing autographs. Trey Boston continues bone to be the most excitable Panther legend ever at any of these events.
00:11:46
Speaker 4: He was cranked. But it's just a cool, fun night.
00:11:50
Speaker 5: And I do think, you know, I do think they realize, man, it sucks you can't bring your kids out to practice right now until next year.
00:11:57
Speaker 6: I think they they're giving you a great event. Uh, it's great. It's a great celebration of Panther football. It is man, It's a great way to kick it off. And now the real stuff starts, the real intense stuff bone the Hall of Fame game on Thursday night. Texter is asking who starts at quarterback in Canton on Thursday night. It's got to be Picket, right, Like, you don't think Bryce is starting, is he? There's only three arms on the roster right now, right because Kyle trashk they inside draft.
00:12:24
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:12:24
Speaker 5: He talked about that the other day and said, basically, we have so many needs elsewhere deep on the roster that we can't bring Trash.
00:12:30
Speaker 4: There was three quarterbacks.
00:12:31
Speaker 6: I may say that Picket doesn't even play, but I think, huh, Bryce, what you're saying.
00:12:38
Speaker 4: If you're saying Bryce about Bryce.
00:12:40
Speaker 6: Saying if they had Trask in there, I'm not even sure how much Picket would even play. No, oh really yeah, outside of one series, but Teddy Kny Piggott definitely starts because they're not gonna make haydnes King play the whole entire game. So but yo, so you're definitely saying Bryce is not playing. Bryce is not playing. Oh yeah, I'm with you on that. Yeah, it'll be It'll be Pickett and Haines King. There's only two arms. So my point is if they had Kyle Trass, we probably wouldn't see a lot of Picket either. But because they only have two quarterbacks, they're not gonna make Hayneses King play the entire game. Okay, so Picket will play for a series or two. Yeah, that's what I mean. It could be a half. I don't know, they could each take a half.
00:13:16
Speaker 4: I don't know.
00:13:17
Speaker 5: It's we have not been in this spot in forever, right, so it's just it's it's uncharted. Waters Canalist will often not play Guys Bone much at all in the preseason as it was. I think every does every starter sit. I think close to every starter sits. Yes, you know, maybe someone like Lee Hunter they get out there as a rookie.
00:13:45
Speaker 6: Do you consider ex elis starter as a third wide out because he's probably gonna have to play, So I think he plays. I think he might play some. They need to get him in game action and they needed they need to maximize his opportunities.
00:13:57
Speaker 5: I would think Canalis will be asked that question today because we've only got two more practices before Wednesday. They're traveling to Canton, so you've got today and tomorrow, So I would expect today the questions to start to be asked about who are you playing, who's not playing?
00:14:09
Speaker 6: Nim won't play, Brooks definitely won't play. Yeah, those two guys will not play in there. So offensive line maybe a series, but freely probably maybe for a series maybe.
00:14:21
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:14:21
Speaker 5: I feel like most teams don't even play starters, you know what I mean, Like they literally may set out every starter. So we're gonna have to find out when this weekend comes up. I did want to let you hear Coach Canalis or Thursday night, not this weekend. We're only three days away. Coach Canalis I mentioned Princely being active bone On Friday night, Coach Canalis talked about the second year edge rusher.
00:14:42
Speaker 9: Honestly, Princely, since the beginning of camp has really been one of our guys on defense, chasing the ball all over the field. And this is really cool to watch him and Nick come in at the same time. And we know how Nick plays and with this just relentless effort, and Princelely has been that guy. He's chasing everything down. He's working on his craft and to push himself in different rush packages. And he's a guy that I'm really excited to see where he goes.
00:15:06
Speaker 5: He's huge, man, He's one of the X factors Sam Jonathan Brooks. He may be the Jonathan Brooks in the defense. You know, if he can make a big jump. I'm not a convenience.
00:15:16
Speaker 6: It's not true what Canals is saying, but I also think there's something here where Canals is also right now trying to talk up Princely too, because they know how valuable he now is to this operation. So it's a little bit of they're trying to get as confidence as high as it can be when the season begins. I did think he flashed the other No, he definitely did. But the reason Canals is also going to talk him up it's justified. But there's also you know, they they desperately need Princely to fill that voint in Nick's court.
00:15:43
Speaker 5: They do they need they could use his I mean, we need pass rush badly. We brought in Jalen Phillips. We need it badly. We've been one of the worst pass rushes in the NFL boon in the last few seasons, and that is his bag, that is his specialty, and I would expect him to make a jump. I do want to point out Bone, what is going on on the text line right now. There is a movement from our Mac and Bone show texters that Dave Canalis needs to play Bryce Young and that Dave Canalis needs to play the starters, that they need to take advantage of the extra preseason game. So this something I thought Bone would be accepted by everybody, is that, Yeah, most of those guys are not going to play.
00:16:28
Speaker 4: We may just may become a thing on the texts. Guy, we could want that.
00:16:32
Speaker 6: Those guys could want that all they want, but they're not getting it.
00:16:35
Speaker 8: Is that because they want a reason to stay invested longer than they probably like, we'll sit here and watch the entire game because that's our job. How many of these fans back when they realize this is the worst level of preseason football. You watching the entire preseason will be gone by the middle of the second quarter because like you not like.
00:16:52
Speaker 4: Your twos may play a driven too. Let me let me, let me get let me figure out how we go. What's happening here.
00:16:57
Speaker 5: Panther Fitty Bone is questioning his fallow Panther fans. Panther Fitty is beginning year two Bone of his return to Panther fan.
00:17:05
Speaker 6: I sort of point that out. Yes, that's sort of point. I think what it is he's got he's got He's got a platform, y'all, he's got a platform. I think what's going on?
00:17:16
Speaker 5: If you can read some of these texts, it is what we talk about every year, the slow starts that the Dave Canalis has been very apprehensive Bone to play Bryce and the Starters a lot, and I think we, many of us, have wanted to see it more. I think that's all it is. But they're taking this to a Hall of Fame game that just no one anymore plays Starters.
00:17:38
Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, I think that discussion will be next week, next week and after that.
00:17:42
Speaker 4: That's kind of how I feel. This week. I didn't even quit. I didn't even think anything about Starters playing this week.
00:17:47
Speaker 8: I would question if they played him, that would be the conversation, why would you play?
00:17:52
Speaker 4: That's That's what I'm saying. There's nothing the game.
00:17:54
Speaker 5: Chris Harmon, says Roaring Ryde has two hundred plus people Bone going to Canton. They play it's they Harmon. I know you lost some weight so they can't put you on the line anymore, baby, but maybe skill position somewhere that that'll be a hell of a time for Panther fair. What a celebration Bone of the Panthers returning to action, but also Luke on Saturday.
00:18:17
Speaker 6: And celebrating Luke. Our second guest of the day in that Kurt Coleman, former teammate of Luke's, will join the show about what do he thinks of Luke going to the Hall of Fame this weekend on Sports Radio ninety two seven WFNZ.
00:18:50
Speaker 4: Sports Radio ninety two seven wfn Z.
00:18:53
Speaker 5: Everybody remember that the Mac and Bone Show is there for you, not just from six to ten. We're there for you whenever you need us. Right podcast form, that is, listen to the parts of the show you miss. There's so much Panther football we're talking about nowadays, you know any part you missing.
00:19:12
Speaker 4: The show.
00:19:13
Speaker 5: Each hour is podcasted on its own WFNZ, dot com, Apple and Spotify. For example. We started off our Luke Keighley Appreciation week interviews with Steve Speck as head coach at Saint Xavier and Cincinnati. That was an hour ago. Go to the seven o'clock hour and tune into that. But he was tremendous telling some old stories about young Luke Keighley in high school. Still a film nut in high school. I'm sure nobody is surprised by that at all. Our next guest played three seasons here in Carolina with Luke, and he is here on Luke Keighley Appreciation Week to talk about what it was like to play behind Luke Keighley. He was watching Luke tell everybody where every play was going. He is Kurt Coleman, former safety for your Carolina Panthers, who joins us here on the Mack and Bone Show.
00:20:04
Speaker 4: Kurt, what's going on? How you doing here?
00:20:07
Speaker 2: Guys? Hold on? I need to clear something. I thought this was about me telling everyone that I was telling Luke where to go.
00:20:15
Speaker 4: Oh heck yeah. If that's the real story, we'd love to know the real story, man.
00:20:19
Speaker 6: This is about trying to get you some credit. That's what this is about.
00:20:22
Speaker 4: Her was yelling to Luke and Luke was cheating.
00:20:24
Speaker 6: He's like I acted like he knew where what now we've got to see.
00:20:27
Speaker 4: That is great man.
00:20:30
Speaker 6: That is so you do you have a play or moment when you hear the name lou Keikley. Is there a play or a moment that comes to mind that you think best sums up who he was as a player.
00:20:43
Speaker 2: I don't think there's one singular play that you can just say this. This is I think the greatest linebacker that I got to witness, whether that was on his team or on the opposite side of him, but just being in the locker room, being on the field, and really just listening to his mannerism, his cadences, I think it just it speaks to everything that he is. And there's so much more about him that I think people won't even be able to get to you because there is so much. I think one of the best things that I keep telling people this is even off the field, the moment that I first walked into the locker room of Carolina, he was the first person to greet me, and the first thing he says is, Hey, if there's anything you need anyone to be introduced to, just let me know. I'll be more than happy to walk you through this and that and I was like, Wow, like it it is. Everyone's going to speak to the greatness. And I think I have a couple of stories that I would love to share, but I want to speak to the to the humility of him as well. This this man is absolutely amazing inside and out, has got a great heart. But when you talk about competitors, that guy knows how to go. But if you're talking about a specific play, there's a couple of them. But the first one I would say is this. We are playing Seattle at home in our divisional roalm and it was a third down situation and it was one of those things where again I was a few years older than Luke. So he did his film study, I do my film study. We meet throughout the week, we do all this, and I remember this vividly. We had we were crushing him and then they started to creep back in, creep back in, Yeah, and they came out in this formation and I was like, oh, I know what's happening. And Luke goes, They're running the dig and I'm like, no, they ain't running the dig. They're not running the dig.
00:22:30
Speaker 1: Sure enough, they ran the dig.
00:22:32
Speaker 2: And I looked at him and I'm like I am so sorry. I I will never doubt you again. But it's the man is amazing, and he knows when to turn it on and he knew when to turn it off. He is an absolute great human being. But like I said, he is a Hall of Famer inside and out.
00:22:51
Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that's there.
00:22:52
Speaker 5: There's that's another layer to him is just how genuine humble, Like you said, just like a night, like everybody would want like Luke as their neighbor, Like everybody would of your he's your neighbor. He's the guy that will help you with anything.
00:23:04
Speaker 4: Like.
00:23:04
Speaker 5: It's just that that's such a cool part of the package too. How did he like, like we always kind of compare it, even though Cam had the Superman Moniker here, we always compared it to like Luke had this Clark Kent persona off the field and then would all of a sudden become this superhero on the field. How like, how did he did he literally just walk on the field and then flip the switch? Did you notice on game day? Oh we got a different Luke. It's game day, Like, how was he like kind of flipping that switch?
00:23:35
Speaker 2: Well, you know, I think people say the Clark Kent thing because of how he looks. He looks literally like the cartoon Clark Kent.
00:23:43
Speaker 4: Yeah, but he's more of a.
00:23:45
Speaker 2: Bruce Banner than he is a superman.
00:23:47
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:23:48
Speaker 2: He he is actually an incredible scientist. He is the he is the professor like he is in their studying Bruce Banner. Yeah. And then when you piss him off, you better watch out because he is out for blood and he does not care what he messes up in his path. That is really Luke. But you know, obviously it looks nice to call him Clark Camp, but he is the Bruce Bayder.
00:24:09
Speaker 6: I love all the superhero I love that. That's beautiful, Kurt. Let's go back a few years. January twenty twenty, the news breaks out Luke Keikley's retiring. What was your initial reaction. Well, when that news dropped, you know.
00:24:25
Speaker 2: I the first thing is I sent him, you know cinema text message is to say what a great career and how you know, grateful I was to spend three years of his career together. Just you know, again, just being around great people, great players. You just got to appreciate it while you're in the moment and then give them their flowers while you still can you know, regardless, you don't know how things are going to shake out as far as will he be in the Hall of Fame, this and that, and everyone will say, you know, we would have loved to have seen him play another ten years, I mean, without a doubt. But at the end of the day, he came and he did what exactly what he was supposed to do. And I think the blessing for Luke is there's many facets to him. You know, there's the football player, but he's he's the hunter, he's the fisher, he's he's the businessman, he's he's really the the you know, he's the philanthropist. He'll show up and now he's the youth coach. So it's like he's there's so many layers to Luke. But I think as one chapter ends and coincidentally, like our chapters were ending at the same time, and I think you just got to appreciate the journey. And I feel like Rivera used to always say, be where your feet are, and I think Luke was such a smart person to know this is the time. You know, yeah, could I fight for one more two? But what does that do? You know? On the back end, of my life, and I think he left exactly when he needed to leave. He put into the game exactly what he did, and you can walk away with no regrets. That's what this game does, is the ones that are able to get it all out of their system, regardless if it's on your terms or someone else's terms. You can say I gave it everything I got and I can live with that, and I can say he can. He can walk away and say I gave this game everything I needed and everything I could while I couldn't.
00:26:08
Speaker 5: We're talking with Kirk Coleman, who, by the way, had a Pro Bowl year. Twenty fifteen was a special year for so many of us in Carolina. Luke included Kurt seven picks Pro Bowl season that year, and my god, that defense was so good. Kurt the film study stuff like is he in there like way? Like is he sleep in the film room or is he just so sharp that he just sees things in the film that others don't, or is it all of it?
00:26:37
Speaker 4: Is it ever? Is it all of it together?
00:26:39
Speaker 2: It's it's got to be all of it because the one thing that coaches and will do is coaches will feed you every information and nugget and tip that they can to get you ready. It's the great ones that can recall it and recall it literally as it's happening or before it happens. I think that's that's the thing about studying is you never know when you have to kind of pull back a layer that you said, oh my gosh, I watched it on a Monday. They did, they're doing it again. There's a few times in my career where I can say every like, you never know when that moment is. And there's there's times where you just have to put in the time. You can't shortcut the process and if you do, and those that do, they're gonna get burned on, you know, at some point. So I feel like your process is your process and for me and I know for Luke, there's a rhythm in to the week. And that's what I loved about football is you knew exactly what you were going to get on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday as far as the practice expectations. But the one thing you can't adjust for is the team that you're playing for and who you're going against. And what I loved is when you got to go with some of the great quarterbacks. Boy did I oh man a little bit extra a little a little extra hour here understanding red zone tendencies, third downs because first and second down obviously, I think that's the majority of the game. But really you win and lose a third downs, You win and lose in red zone and critical situations. Two minute drives, Like what does the team do when they need a first time? What do they do when they're driving? Like that's why Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelcey or you know, all these great call it teams or players or they execute so well because they know exactly what they're doing. So for for I know, Luke, for myself, it was I'm gonna know exactly what you're doing better than what you're doing so that I can beat you to that spot. And that's that's the moments that really separate the good from grades.
00:28:32
Speaker 6: Kurt, that twenty fifteen team the greatest team and most beloved team in Charlotte sports history. Do you have a moment or a game that stands out to you as your favorite from that season?
00:28:45
Speaker 2: You know, I would love, Alex, I would love to buy a vow. I want to I want to say two games that really just stand out and it's gonna and I want to prop up Luke. But the first one was Dallas Cowboys on third or on a Thanksgiving game, and I remember going into that game and it was crazy because we were still underfeed and everyone was like, you guys are going to lose. You know you're going to in America's stadium, this and that, and we were underdogs Vegas. Everyone says they don't pay attention to that, but you hear it. You don't have to pay attention to it, but you hear it. And we went down there with such a chip on our shoulder. From the moment, I think before the smoke left the stadium, we were already putting a beat down on him. And the funny thing was I had already had an interception in that game and Luke had already had an interception that game. They tried to run. Jason wentten across on a deep cross. We are in cover two, so really the my cast a run with number three over the middle, and Jason went and did a good job understanding that it was split high and so he's trying to really keep it between the safeties. Luke is responsible with three as vertical he's got a run with three, so Luke is just tailing him Ryan under he's witting, and Romo loves that ball, and I come across as a oh buddy, this is number two. Next thing, I know, I don't know where he got the jet packed, but Luke jumps up, intercepts it, and I'm midair, so like this is all happening in milliseconds. So I my face goes from yes to oh my gosh, to okay, let me destroy Jason went and I just clobber him and and you know, Luke gets a second interception, and but I thought that was just such an amazing experience, just as a team by me again, just again witnessing greatness, like there's only so many people on this on this earth that can actually make that play. And then the second one of the of the season was our national our NFC championship game. It was one of those weeks where we had a crazy storm of snow and ice and you know, you know, very un Charlatanian, and I was not I was not happy. I was like I left the North for this, But but it was it was really magical kind of see our team because we had an opportunity again to practice indoors, and everybody was like, we're going outdoors. We are practicing in the snow. You know that we had them kind of basically snowplow our fields and it's like, let's get out here, let's get it after this because when Arizona comes up here, they're not going to know what hit him. And sure enough, that's kind of the Again, the feeling that we had is it didn't matter who we played. We knew we were the better team and we were excited about just again displaying all the things and having fun with it. There was there's man, it was palpable the energy that was out there amongst the fans, in our team, in our locker room, all the things that we did, like it was so much fun. Yes, we were winning, but the winning didn't make it fun. We were having fun and we got to win and that was what was so cool. And obviously you know Luke's plant and drive, I mean it is a coach a coach's clinic tape. You know when people watch what he did to get that take safe, perfect plant, and he knew it was coming. That's the thing. He knew it was coming. He did exactly what we worked on in the drills. Playing us foot pot it ran it for a touchdown, someone falls out of the out of the stand.
00:32:10
Speaker 4: And he helps him up and picks him up.
00:32:12
Speaker 1: This is the craziest thing for me.
00:32:15
Speaker 2: I'm like, hey, man, I'm gonna come check on you after I get done celebrated. But he literally stops in the middle. It's you, you can't, you can't make this up and so and just to be able to celebrate with our team and our community. That was the two special games that I You know, there's many more, but those are the two that really stick out the most of me.
00:32:35
Speaker 4: Kurt. It was great man, You're always great to talk to.
00:32:37
Speaker 5: And next interview, we're not going to ruin Luke's week right with the Hall of Fame and all that. Next interview is going to be all about how you made Luke those three years. You know what I mean.
00:32:46
Speaker 6: You just you gave them all the keys, all the secrets.
00:32:49
Speaker 4: Uh, thank you so much for coming on.
00:32:52
Speaker 7: Man.
00:32:52
Speaker 4: We appreciate that was great.
00:32:54
Speaker 2: Thank you guys. I appreciate you having me all.
00:32:56
Speaker 4: I'd be good, Kurt.
00:32:57
Speaker 6: The Kirk Colvin's safety Cans for three years would Keikley. Do you can feel the love and appreciation he has for a week coming through those stories, right?
00:33:04
Speaker 4: I know?
00:33:05
Speaker 5: I love the way everybody that was with him over there talks about him. Man, you know, everyone their own moments and their own stories. We come back a look at the ACC and SEC media preseason polls.
00:33:17
Speaker 4: Who was overrated? Who was underrated? Sports Radio nine.
00:33:36
Speaker 7: He's one correct And with what he said yesterday he ended this conversation Shay, it was virtuo. So it was brilliant. A lot of back and forth the last two weeks, and the SEC has lost this verbal battle, just like they lost the battle on the football field. I don't need to regurgitate the statue. Laid them out. He laid them out. But he did it so effectively, so succinctly, and with such force because he has the goods, he has the receipts.
00:34:06
Speaker 4: To back it up.
00:34:07
Speaker 7: And as someone who as you well know, and some of the audience can attest to, I have waived this flag for the SEC for a long time. You have to put that flag down at some point and just let the field do the talking. Because all of the back and forth, whether it's the commissioner, whether it's Nick Saban last week saying the SEC is still the best just makes the SEC look ridiculous.
00:34:33
Speaker 5: Is that music to the ears of a lot of you fans out there? That is Paul fine bomb Bone. He did not wave a white flag during the interview, but that was the verbal surrender. The Big Ten is kicking. Our fannies were not the best anymore. They even beat us off the field. He was talking about Kurt Signetti's comments about the SEC where he body bagged them.
00:34:56
Speaker 4: They beat us on the field. Oh not.
00:34:58
Speaker 5: That's got to be heartwarming folks that are not fans of the SEC to hear that right there from Ball. Absolutely, Greg Sankie, you'll never hear that from Greg sank though, Bone. Greg sanky just goes five. Hey, somebody find me some metrics where we're still number one, all right, I don't care what they are.
00:35:14
Speaker 4: Just find me some.
00:35:14
Speaker 6: Other mesage, no matter what, just find me something. Oh my goodness, all right.
00:35:19
Speaker 5: So I want let's I want to get to the SEC here to segment, but I also want to talk acc We are going to attempt Bone to explain what happened in the courts with college football. In the next segment, nine o'clock. We'll also talk about Charlotte FC losing to a dang world class striker Robert Lewandowski in Chicago. Will talk about the Braves the weekend. They had tons of wins, multiple trades, all that stuff. But right now, though, let's just we had not talked about it, Bone, we've been so into different stuff. Let's find a couple of minutes, like just with our thoughts on the ACC media poll which was announced last week and the SEC media poll which was announced I think ten days ago, and like where they have teams and who sticks out to you as overrated and underrated for the ACC. Will start there. Miami obviously number one underrated for the ACC. I think you could say Miami is underrated in this respect. Bone, there were twenty three first place votes they didn't get.
00:36:23
Speaker 4: How does that happen?
00:36:24
Speaker 5: But anyway, they were overwhelming Number one SMU two, Louisville three, Clemson four, Georgia Tech five, Virginia six, NC State seven. Then you have Virginia Tech eight, Pitt nine, Duke ten, Florida State eleven, col twelve, Wake thirteen, Syracuse fourteen, North Carolina fifteen, Boston College sixteen, Stanford seventeen, but some loon ball picked them with a first place.
00:36:54
Speaker 4: Vote to win the conference.
00:36:56
Speaker 6: Maggie used to be a lot easier when this conference had nineteens. You didn't get winded. I think an oxygen mask. So does anybody stick out to you? Overrated? Underrated in this thing?
00:37:07
Speaker 4: Bone?
00:37:08
Speaker 7: Yeah?
00:37:08
Speaker 6: I had four actually written down here. I think the teams you wisted at five and six despite the progress they've made the last couple of years. I think Georgia Tech's got an adjustment without Haines King, who really was everything for them the last handful of years. I think they're overrated at five. Virginia made a lot of progress last year. Are we completely buying in? They're better? But are they six? So I think Georgia Tech Virginia go to me in the overrated category.
00:37:37
Speaker 5: Yeah, I kind of buy that too, Like are they they're not going to quite have the year that they had last year for Georgia Tech the year they've had the last couple You don't just loan lose Haines King, a player that's special that is now of course with the Panthers, and and not skip a beat, I'll then tell I'll then piggyback off that and then people say, here goes well pack Mack. But I look at NC State and feel like they can be in that area with the skin and listen.
00:38:04
Speaker 4: Maybe I'm maybe I'm a homer, and maybe I'm wrong. Lord knows.
00:38:07
Speaker 5: I picked State this time of year in the pass to be really good. Sometimes it's a missed, I've whiffed. But I feel like with their schedule that they have and with CJ. Bailey back at quarterback, I would put them in that area where I think they can contend for like fourth or fifth in the conference.
00:38:23
Speaker 4: I think that that underrated for stake.
00:38:26
Speaker 6: That five through nine and Duke will see, but five through nine, you can flip all those around. I think Georgia Tech, Virginia too high, State too low, Virginia Tech too low. Although their schedules tough at the end, I think you could go NC State five Virginia Tech.
00:38:45
Speaker 4: I was thinking the same thing.
00:38:46
Speaker 6: Yeah, and also a team that can steak up on you some years. Don't sleep on Pittsburgh also being better than number nine. Their quarterback was really good last year as a freshman. I think Pittsburgh can be probably better than the Virginia Jeordia Texas. Yeah, yeah, we always sleep on, always sleep on him. And it feels like when we don't pay attention to them is when we look up and all of a sudden they're six and one in the conference, and how that happened.
00:39:11
Speaker 5: The only time we pay attention to Nardoozy in the off season bone is when he does his annual the acc is better than the Big ten speech. He did that a couple of weeks ago, and we bagged on it. But he can coach Florida State two. Not overrated at number eleven. But how the heck did they get three first place votes? That's a great question. Danny Canell sneak three votes in the ej Manuel got one in there? Are you kidding me? They ain't winning the dang conference? But eleventh fifth probably feels about right. Wake Forest thirteen. I wonder a few now, Gee Lopez back with his South Alabama offensive coordinator.
00:39:50
Speaker 4: Could Jake Dicker overachieve again a little bit?
00:39:53
Speaker 6: He remember, just did spots. He did it last year better than Col's. Also got a great quarterback too. Yeah, what if they might be well? Florida State could definitely be dropping down there a little bit, depending on how their wooden shot. Their season goes.
00:40:07
Speaker 5: Now in the SEC bone, it's going I'm gonna get out of breath doing the SEC predicted or to finish two. Because of the size of these conferences Georgia, I thought they'd go Texas. I thought they'd pulling Ella Langley and be choosing Texas Bone. But they did not. They went Georgia number one, Texas two, oh Miss three, A and M four, LSU five, Alabama six, Oklahoma seven, Tennessee eight, Florida nine, miszoo Is at ten, South Carolina eleven, Auburn with new coach Alex Golish twelve, Vanderbilt thirteen, Kentucky fourteen, Mississippi State six point fifteen, and Arkansas sixteen. What strikes you there as overrated or under ring game Cocks at eleven, because I've already said that one here. I think they are better at the best team that date. They're better than Tennessee, They're better than Florida, They're better than Missouri, although I will say I think Missouri at ten could be another one there because Eli, much like Nardoozi, seems to kind of have them better than you think. We'll see about a Mott Hardy and after he got shot and they bring in Austin Simmons at quarterback. Missouri could be better, but I think South Carolina deserves to at least be right there behind Alabama Oklahoma. I did their at least the eighth best team in the SEC, if not better. South Carolina to me, definitely feels underrated. I am on board with them this year having a bounce back season bone I do not view them as the eleventh best team. And I think people, you know, Beemer said it. We got a lot of the same stud players that they vote that they loved last year going into the season, and this year they don't love. I love the Briles higher. I think they have addressed the offensive line neat over and over again. In the portal, Clayton White is a tremendous underrated defensive coordinator. To me, that's a team that could win at like eight games. Tames I could definitely see as far as overrated. I did say Tennessee, and we've said that a lot, Matt. Do you think anyone at the top is overrated or underrated? It's we're now, We're now, you know, nitpicking the big dogs here. You know a team that hasn't been talked about a lot. We've talked about Georgia, We've talked about Texas. I think A and M a little That's what I was gonna say, talk about old Miss LSU. It feels like we've talked about every team in the SEC, but A and M just kind of sits there and no one talks about, like, are we sure they're gonna follow up and have a season? Last year they had a schedule, an SEC schedule that was about as easy as you can get in that conference. They lucked out with their schedule drawl, and I feel like by the end of the year bone they started to see okay. They might have been a byproduct of who they were playing there not saying they're not going to be good and Elk goes a hell of a coach. I'll tell you what I think's underrated is Oklahoma at seven. I think Oklahoma's gonna be damn good. I think they're gonna have the standard when it comes to defense in this league. They got a ton back on defense, and I think John Butttier was very affected by the injury last year. I don't think it's any coincidence that John Mattier was considered a highsman candidate before he got hurt, and then after that was completely different. I think he was struggling to throw the football with that injury, and I think a healthy John Mattier with that defense. Like I honestly think Oklahoma is a is a playoff team and a top four SEC team.
00:43:24
Speaker 6: I really do, man, I would say I think I think Ole Miss is overratedble they do have Chambliss and that makes up for a while. I don't think Pete Golding is going to be anywhere near as good in the long term as Leane Kiff it was, but they do have Chambliss and Lacy back this year, so we may not see a drop off this year. I wonder long term, you know what happens there with Old Miss bag would you maybe consider Auburn I would have underrated because Byron Brown is going to be an There's some quarterbacks.
00:43:55
Speaker 4: He's a low dude.
00:43:56
Speaker 6: There are some quarterbacks down there at the bottom of the SEC. Byron Brown at Auburn, Camarrio Taylor in Mississippi State is getting a lot of run, so I wonder if they may not win a ton. But those could be some teams that knock off some teams along the way.
00:44:10
Speaker 5: Bone, Gator fans are upset with you, and Pecante's upset with you. Picante so upset you were on the air of the other day. Conte says, we're upset we can't get those ten minutes back of our life when you were joining us on the radio. I do think I'm higher. I'm with you on Tennessee. I am higher on Florida, I think than you. I love John Summer all and those weapons they have ball and then at running back, Wilson and some of those other guys at receiver. The only thing is is Aaron Filo any good? He was Haynes King's backup, but he does get to team up with his oc. They brought Buster Faulkner over from Georgia Tech. They got talent on defense. I'm a bit higher on Florida. I also Bone don't now they've voted Alabama six, so maybe that's about right. I do not think Alabama is a playoff team this year. I think some people maybe not that poll, but I think some people are overrating Alabama and putting them in like the top four.
00:45:07
Speaker 6: I think Oklahoma's better than them. Like you said, I'm high on Florida for the long term. I just don't not in the short term. Yeah about Filos, the Filos, the question I would have. I mean, look there, they'll be better. I just don't know. I mean nine seems like that. But if I'm gonna, if I'm gonna elevate the game Cocks in Missouri, that someone's gonna have to drop. So I think Florida's better than Tennessee. I'm not high on Tennessee this year. I think it's I'm not sure about Miszoo. I'm not sure about Missoo this year. I usually Hardy's healthy, he's the best running back in the country. That's great.
00:45:47
Speaker 5: I just don't think the rest of the team around him bone like I I've been on Missoo the last couple of years. I don't get the feeling that they are as stacked and as good as they have been in the past. Do we know, I mean, what do we know? Austin Simmons. You know, I know he's a genius. I'm not sure we know about him as a football player. Though graduated in two years at Ole mess Oh gosh, that's what I did at Towson. I didn't tell you the story about me GRADU go to school for two years?
00:46:14
Speaker 6: All right, when we come back here on the Mac Inbone Show. That was fun, good football chatter there. When we come back here on the program, weekend recap, tons of college football, tons of college sports happenings, including a big court ruling and the Big ten in the SEC. Finally give in FC talk as well. Sports Radio ninety two seven WFNZ
