00:00:17.920 --> 00:00:23.280
Welcome to the latest edition of the Lightning Talks Podcast, brought to you by Lightning TV.
00:00:23.280 --> 00:00:31.760
And in this latest episode, we're gonna get caught behind the scenes of the lifestack Noting Kings Lightning ahead of the 2026-27 season.
00:00:31.760 --> 00:00:35.840
I'm Pimmy and I'm joined here by the amazing Harrison.
00:00:35.840 --> 00:00:37.119
Harrison, how are you doing, mate?
00:00:37.280 --> 00:00:38.320
I'm doing alright, thank you.
00:00:38.320 --> 00:00:39.039
Thank you very much.
00:00:39.039 --> 00:00:41.759
Uh very hot again, but it's another episode.
00:00:41.759 --> 00:00:45.119
Looking forward to it, and that season's getting ever so close now.
00:00:45.359 --> 00:00:48.719
It is, and yeah, this heat wave, I just want to be back in a nice rink now.
00:00:48.719 --> 00:00:50.560
I'm I'm I'm I'm bored of this hot weather now.
00:00:50.560 --> 00:00:51.359
Need a bit of rain.
00:00:51.359 --> 00:00:53.520
Yeah, probably by the time needed.
00:00:53.520 --> 00:00:59.039
Probably by the time the recording has gone out, we've probably had like five days back to back of monsoons now.
00:00:59.039 --> 00:01:01.280
But yeah, fingers crossed, we need it.
00:01:01.280 --> 00:01:08.159
Uh, but on our latest episode, we have got two new additions to the Lifestack Milton Kings Lightning.
00:01:08.159 --> 00:01:11.840
But I'm not going to introduce them, I'm going to let you gents introduce yourselves.
00:01:11.840 --> 00:01:15.280
So let's start first of all with Lightning's new number three.
00:01:15.519 --> 00:01:16.879
Uh hello, AMK fans.
00:01:16.879 --> 00:01:19.680
Uh Jake here with I'll be wearing number three this year.
00:01:19.680 --> 00:01:28.560
Um, I spent the last four years in North America um trying to improve my hockey game, and uh now I've decided to uh join Milan Keynes.
00:01:28.560 --> 00:01:30.239
Uh really excited to get started.
00:01:30.560 --> 00:01:32.480
Hey Lightning fans, David Thompson.
00:01:32.480 --> 00:01:40.239
Um, I played for Telford Tigers the last year and three quarters, kind of after um made the move from the Polish League.
00:01:40.239 --> 00:01:42.480
Um, yeah, really, really excited.
00:01:42.480 --> 00:01:46.560
Kind of getting to that point in the summer now where hockey's on the brain all the time.
00:01:46.560 --> 00:01:49.439
So um very eager to get over there.
00:01:49.680 --> 00:01:54.799
Thank you very much, gents, and thank you so much for giving up some time of your summer and your off season.
00:01:54.799 --> 00:02:00.959
I know uh it's uh a time for you to rest and almost unwind from hockey, but thank you for giving up your time and coming on the podcast tonight.
00:02:01.200 --> 00:02:01.840
Yeah, of course.
00:02:01.840 --> 00:02:02.560
Happy to do it.
00:02:03.439 --> 00:02:08.319
Uh so I think we'll kick straight in and I think we'll go a little bit your hockey journeys.
00:02:08.319 --> 00:02:10.879
And David, you touched upon it first of all.
00:02:10.879 --> 00:02:20.560
Obviously, you came up uh played college a bit in in uh in in Canada and then played over in Europe uh before coming to Telford.
00:02:20.560 --> 00:02:21.840
So how did that journey come about?
00:02:21.840 --> 00:02:25.599
So being in Poland and then going from a I don't mean spoke.
00:02:25.599 --> 00:02:36.639
I think both the Jared said uh playing over in Sweden, uh Jared White said about not being able to speak the language and coming back to an English-speaking country was uh was one of the setting points.
00:02:36.639 --> 00:02:41.520
Was that something that sort of turred you for going to Shropshire?
00:02:42.400 --> 00:02:58.319
Yeah, I think um, you know, me and I obviously Eric Henderson, who's on Telford still, um, you know, we played together in Huntsville, and um I had signed in the Polish league that year, and my coach was asking me for a winger.
00:02:58.319 --> 00:02:59.439
So I mentioned Eric.
00:02:59.439 --> 00:03:03.439
We both went over together, um, and it just wasn't a good situation.
00:03:03.439 --> 00:03:08.080
Um, the team was kind of a lower end team in that league.
00:03:08.080 --> 00:03:11.360
Um, and the league's very good, it's high quality uh hockey.
00:03:11.360 --> 00:03:18.800
It was just very dependent on what that team's budget was, where that depended on how you were gonna do as a team.
00:03:18.800 --> 00:03:23.439
Um, so we uh me and Eric ultimately decided we need to kind of get out of here.
00:03:23.439 --> 00:03:33.759
And um Telford came up, and after some talks with Tom at that time and and my agent and stuff, yeah, it was it was kind of it was the best case scenario.
00:03:33.759 --> 00:03:36.400
So we we ended up getting out and going to Telford.
00:03:36.400 --> 00:03:38.159
And yeah, what it has been easier.
00:03:38.159 --> 00:03:47.840
I've played in I played in hockey tan in Sweden and played in Poland, and um it's just it it does make life easier being in an English speaking country.
00:03:47.840 --> 00:03:48.879
And I just like the people.
00:03:48.879 --> 00:03:55.120
I've found like the people are really nice in the UK, and um it's just uh it's a good lifestyle.
00:03:55.120 --> 00:04:08.960
And I think now, you know, joining Milton Keynes and being in a on a team that's like in the win now mindset, and they we want to see success, I think that's something exciting, and ultimately that's why I decided to sign here.
00:04:09.199 --> 00:04:15.759
Uh and with with joy that was that uh a conversation you initiated with Pete, or was that Pete that approached you?
00:04:15.759 --> 00:04:19.120
Was it a little bit of a bit of 50-50?
00:04:19.519 --> 00:04:24.399
Yeah, I I think I wasn't a hundred percent sure what I wanted to do after last season.
00:04:24.399 --> 00:04:35.600
Um just with life and kind of me finishing my school, um it just it's it was getting to a point where I wasn't even sure technically if I was gonna play.
00:04:35.600 --> 00:04:47.600
Um but yeah, I had my you know, my agent was reaching out and talking to some teams in the league, and um he and Pete had some conversations and there was some interest there both ways.
00:04:47.600 --> 00:04:59.439
And so um after some deliberation, kind of seeing where my girlfriend was at too, and and we we kind of decided, yeah, this was the right place.
00:04:59.439 --> 00:05:01.839
But I think it was kind of a thing of mutual interest.
00:05:01.839 --> 00:05:04.879
I don't know if necessarily it started one way or the other.
00:05:04.879 --> 00:05:09.519
Um yeah, I'm just very happy that it worked out the way it did.
00:05:10.319 --> 00:05:14.079
And I know Harrison mentioned it before we uh started recording this.
00:05:14.079 --> 00:05:29.279
Uh he he has mentioned on comments we'll be actually calling you scoring for the lightning rather than against them, and I'm sure there'll be a number of Milton Keynes fans relieved that you'll be uh putting the puck in the net for the lightning this time rather than against them.
00:05:29.279 --> 00:05:34.959
Because I know you've uh scored some big goals for Telford over the last year and a bit for the Tigers against the Lightning.
00:05:34.959 --> 00:05:41.920
So I think it'll be uh very popular choice that you're uh be wearing the uh the black and gold of the Milton Keynes team this season.
00:05:41.920 --> 00:05:58.560
Uh and Jake, obviously you came through as junior at uh at Coventry, you came through the the Blaze development there, and then you mentioned you went over to North America, so with Ontario Hockey Academy, and then you played uh in America as well for the last two seasons.
00:05:58.560 --> 00:06:00.240
Uh, how did that journey come about?
00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:08.800
Because I know quite a few of the young Brits now, especially in this league, have done the similar journey playing in the USPHL uh USPHL as well as uh that you've done.
00:06:08.800 --> 00:06:15.040
Um, is that something that it came naturally, or do that what you thought was the best for your development?
00:06:15.439 --> 00:06:21.360
Yeah, so like you said, obviously, I um I spent my whole uh junior career playing for commentary.
00:06:21.360 --> 00:06:26.000
I always wanted to play in Canada or America in the future, it was always a dream of mine.
00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:32.079
Um, so after my last year of juniors in commentary, um obviously I finished my GCSEs at that time as well.
00:06:32.079 --> 00:06:38.160
I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do, but um, I still wanted to follow that dream of going to go and play in Canada in America.
00:06:38.160 --> 00:06:44.319
Um, so now obviously I played um for the Ontario Hockey Academy for two years.
00:06:44.319 --> 00:06:55.519
Um, had the opportunity to do postgrad, but then I chose to uh join a junior league in America, um, which I played in Florida for one year.
00:06:55.519 --> 00:06:59.120
Um, and then this past year I just played in uh played in Nashville.
00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:02.720
But yeah, it was uh them four years were some of the best four years of my life.
00:07:02.720 --> 00:07:05.519
Um but yeah, no, it was really, really great experience.
00:07:05.519 --> 00:07:06.480
So yeah.
00:07:06.480 --> 00:07:26.959
Absolutely, yeah, because um obviously hockey's obviously the big spot over there, so um, you know, experience in that was uh was definitely great.
00:07:26.959 --> 00:07:28.879
Um so yeah.
00:07:29.680 --> 00:07:37.120
And uh got GB call-ups both for the under-20s, and then also as well, uh you got called up to the uh for camp for the senior side as well.
00:07:37.120 --> 00:07:39.439
Uh so big experience from there.
00:07:39.439 --> 00:07:46.480
And I know uh you were a teammate uh with the under-18s and under-20s with uh Lightning Zone Archie Salisbury.
00:07:46.480 --> 00:07:50.319
So uh uh have you heard a bit about Milton Keynes off of Archie at all?
00:07:50.319 --> 00:07:54.160
And and what have you heard of the Lightning that made you choose uh Milton Keynes?
00:07:54.480 --> 00:07:55.199
Yeah, that's right.
00:07:55.199 --> 00:07:57.920
Um I played with Archie a few years um at GB.
00:07:57.920 --> 00:08:01.680
I've heard heard great things from him about Martin Keynes, definitely the fans for one.
00:08:01.680 --> 00:08:03.600
I've heard they're absolutely amazing.
00:08:03.600 --> 00:08:07.360
Um so you're really looking forward to playing in front of the fans.
00:08:07.360 --> 00:08:09.439
Um uh yeah.
00:08:10.240 --> 00:08:11.199
All right, great stuff.
00:08:11.199 --> 00:08:12.240
Uh Harrison.
00:08:13.040 --> 00:08:22.639
Yeah, I wanted to um go back to you, David, and just because when Pimmy um left it, uh we were talking about the amount of goals that you scored.
00:08:22.639 --> 00:08:27.279
Having looked at it, 87 goals in 96 games for Telford.
00:08:27.279 --> 00:08:32.799
Um, and it was your best career goals to game ratio.
00:08:32.799 --> 00:08:36.320
What about that sort of move to Telford?
00:08:36.320 --> 00:08:38.480
Was it as you said about the English-speaking country?
00:08:38.480 --> 00:08:46.000
Do you think that that helped it, or do you think it was just right place, right time that made you just push on as much as you did?
00:08:47.519 --> 00:08:52.399
Um I'd love to have an answer for you, but I don't know if I necessarily do.
00:08:52.399 --> 00:08:59.679
Like, I I think you know, I've I've always kind of been an offensive player um in college.
00:08:59.679 --> 00:09:05.120
You know, I had some good seasons with U of T and I got to play for Canada at the World University Games.
00:09:05.120 --> 00:09:08.879
And um I I don't know what it was.
00:09:08.879 --> 00:09:13.519
I think the transition to professional hockey was kind of right as COVID was happening for me.
00:09:13.519 --> 00:09:19.120
So it was like really hard to train, and we didn't have access to our gyms and ice in Toronto.
00:09:19.120 --> 00:09:22.720
Like it was such a hotbed at for that time in COVID.
00:09:22.720 --> 00:09:27.360
And um, I just don't know if necessarily I was ready for that transition at that point.
00:09:27.360 --> 00:09:36.320
And then as I kind of started getting my feet under me eventually, I think it just timed up perfectly for when we did go to to um to Telford.
00:09:36.320 --> 00:09:40.240
And yeah, I think it was it was a little bit, I guess, of a right place, right time.
00:09:40.240 --> 00:09:47.039
I think I was given the opportunity and I was kind of ready to play, and it just, you know, things worked out the way they did.
00:09:47.039 --> 00:09:50.080
Um yeah, I would say that.
00:09:50.320 --> 00:09:56.080
And I do want to briefly touch on as you've mentioned it, you joined with uh Eric Henderson.
00:09:56.080 --> 00:10:05.440
That partnership was, I don't know about you, Pippi, but it was probably one of the more feared partnerships in the league um in since you both joined.
00:10:05.440 --> 00:10:10.399
What was it like playing with him, especially as you said, you played with him at your younger days as well?
00:10:10.879 --> 00:10:12.080
Yeah, I love Hendo.
00:10:12.080 --> 00:10:19.360
I think he's a he's a really good player, super um detail oriented, and he's got a really good brain.
00:10:19.360 --> 00:10:22.000
He's just really good hockey IQ in a good sense.
00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:36.480
And um, we actually played together um that whole season in Huntsville, um, for well for the most part, and then I got called up to Cincinnati and played played there for for a couple for a game and then came back and things were different.
00:10:36.480 --> 00:10:39.360
But it was yeah, we played together for most of that year.
00:10:39.360 --> 00:10:45.919
I think it was just one of those things where I'm primarily a shooter, he's primarily a passer, and it was just like a good partnership.
00:10:45.919 --> 00:10:51.039
Um, and I think you know, the move to Milton Keynes, I think there's a lot of guys like that.
00:10:51.039 --> 00:11:26.159
I you know, that was the thing I think that attracted me was they have such a good like British core, and um, you know, you know the imports are are gonna be are gonna be good good quality guys, and so I was really excited about kind of coming here and you know, you see guys like Norris and County and and Gulliver and like you know, guys whose games I I admire, and um it's just it's really exciting, and I think you know there's gonna be another step forward and things I'm gonna add to my game that are gonna take me another level this year, so yeah, and that's that's great to hear as well.
00:11:26.240 --> 00:11:28.000
I'm sure fans will love to hear that as well.
00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:38.159
And and Jake, obviously, a slightly sort of different uh path for you, but there are still a lot of names in the NIHL that uh would be familiar to you from your youth.
00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:46.879
So uh you ended up playing with the likes of Louis Newell, Jasper Foster, and Rhodes Mitchell King in your Coventry youth days.
00:11:46.879 --> 00:12:06.320
So, I mean, what is it like for you to sort of see that at that point you were just a Coventry youth player with these um your teammates, and now you're all in the in a big league of hockey, which the NIHO has become, and getting that GB call up as well.
00:12:06.960 --> 00:12:08.159
I mean, it's great, yeah.
00:12:08.159 --> 00:12:15.360
Um, obviously, I back in Coventry I used to play up with them guys um because obviously they were a few years older than me.
00:12:15.360 --> 00:12:21.919
So coming back into the um the English league and being able to play against these guys and you know catch up with them, it's it's great.
00:12:21.919 --> 00:12:29.279
There's also a few guys that I played in Canada with who uh who I'll be playing against, so that'd be uh that'll be uh that'd be really good.
00:12:29.279 --> 00:12:32.639
Um and then on to the GB call call-up.
00:12:32.639 --> 00:12:34.320
That was that was definitely a surprise for me.
00:12:34.320 --> 00:12:35.919
I really wasn't expecting that.
00:12:35.919 --> 00:12:38.399
Um, but no, it was uh it was a great experience for me.
00:12:38.399 --> 00:12:42.320
Um I learned a lot from all the uh the pro guys.
00:12:42.320 --> 00:12:45.679
Um but yeah, it was a really surreal experience to be honest.
00:12:46.159 --> 00:12:47.360
Great, thanks, Jake.
00:12:47.360 --> 00:13:01.679
Um and obviously like uh Harrison mentioned uh David's uh your your goal production, but having a look back at your stats, um it's very much you you don't really seem to like have more goals than assists.
00:13:01.679 --> 00:13:11.600
It's very much a very similar is that part of your game that you're just as comfortable setting a teammate up as you are uh finishing and finishing the move and scoring the goals.
00:13:11.600 --> 00:13:13.840
Is that just something in your game that you've always worked on?
00:13:14.399 --> 00:13:17.840
Yeah, I just think however offense comes, it comes, right?
00:13:17.840 --> 00:13:25.759
And I think the mindset of you know um kind of taking what's given is kind of how I've played the game.
00:13:25.759 --> 00:13:39.360
I think um my assets as a player were always you know, shot, hands, hockey sense, and um I think that comes out in not just my scoring, but in playmaking as well.
00:13:39.360 --> 00:13:48.639
Um yeah, I don't necessarily I don't know if I necessarily think of myself as yeah, like primarily a scorer.
00:13:48.639 --> 00:13:53.679
Um I think I kind of adopted that role, especially when I start playing with Eric.
00:13:53.679 --> 00:13:56.799
Um, but I can definitely do both.
00:13:56.799 --> 00:13:59.279
And I just kind of go out there and try and compete.
00:13:59.279 --> 00:14:12.399
And I play when I when I am producing and stuff, my mindset is on strictly, I want to not only win this game, I want to like dominate this game, I want to show the other team they shouldn't be on the ice with us.
00:14:12.399 --> 00:14:14.399
Like it's very, it's very intense.
00:14:14.399 --> 00:14:19.519
I would say I have an intensity about me competitive, like with my competitiveness.
00:14:19.600 --> 00:14:21.360
So uh that was touched upon.
00:14:21.360 --> 00:14:44.240
I think uh Pete mentioned it in his uh interview with both Aaron and also with uh with Chris earlier on in the uh offseason, and he mentioned that uh there's a grit and uh doggedness and determination to your game, and you're not afraid to go into the dirty areas and you'll mix up in front of the net, you'll do the screening if need be and you'll just do what's required of you.
00:14:44.240 --> 00:14:48.480
Is that something the game you enjoy that physical nature and that competitive side?
00:14:48.799 --> 00:14:49.600
Yeah, for sure.
00:14:49.600 --> 00:14:57.039
I think um, you know, probably modern days you would look at like a Kachuk or something, or maybe a Marshawn.
00:14:57.039 --> 00:15:01.679
I think for me, the guy I always tried to play like was like a prime Claude Giroux.
00:15:01.679 --> 00:15:08.320
Um, I think when he was in his Philadelphia Flyers days, I think that's kind of who I try to like play like the most.
00:15:08.320 --> 00:15:21.200
And I think he's a rat, he's chirping guys, he's getting in guys' faces, you know, he's not maybe not necessarily fighting, but I think that's something that I'm gonna bring in a little more now um to this game to this season.
00:15:21.200 --> 00:15:30.240
Um but yeah, I think I think if you're not like at least for me, if I'm not doing that, then it's like you're not as in I'm not in engaged as much.
00:15:30.240 --> 00:15:31.840
I need to be chirping guys.
00:15:31.840 --> 00:15:35.440
That's when I play my best hockey is when I'm yelling at somebody.
00:15:35.440 --> 00:15:38.639
So so I try to try to do that anyway.
00:15:38.639 --> 00:15:43.600
You know, there's a couple guys on this team who I'm excited to play with instead of against.
00:15:43.600 --> 00:15:46.320
You know, I think of a game in Solway last year.
00:15:46.320 --> 00:15:51.679
I'm excited to to see Carter Hamill, their their podcast here is hilarious.
00:15:51.679 --> 00:15:54.480
So I'm I'm excited to see those guys.
00:15:55.279 --> 00:16:01.440
I'm not gonna lie, the second you said there's someone you're you're enjoying to be playing alongside, I just instantly went Carter.
00:16:01.440 --> 00:16:06.240
And I don't know if that's and that's meant in the best possible way about Bart as well.
00:16:06.240 --> 00:16:07.600
That's the best way, yeah.
00:16:08.879 --> 00:16:09.840
No, I love his game.
00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:14.879
Uh and Jake, I was up to you uh come through that junior side of things, and you've been playing in North America.
00:16:14.879 --> 00:16:18.720
A lot of the Lightning fans probably won't be familiar with your sort of game style.
00:16:18.720 --> 00:16:20.559
So, how would you describe yourself?
00:16:20.559 --> 00:16:26.080
Are you more of a stay-at-home defenseman or more of a two-way, or do you like going the attack-sided side?
00:16:27.279 --> 00:16:30.399
I think overall I'm a pretty defensively sound defender.
00:16:30.399 --> 00:16:33.919
Um, battle hard in the corners, compete at a high level.
00:16:33.919 --> 00:16:44.960
Um, I think a big thing for me this season is I want to improve on my uh my offensive offensive play as a defender, you know, creating creating chances chances in the offensive zone.
00:16:44.960 --> 00:17:03.600
Um but yeah, I think for me, I just this season I just want to work on becoming an overall um sound defender, um, you know, focusing on the small details and um you know uh creating creating uh creating goals and uh being off an offensive threat.
00:17:03.759 --> 00:17:04.559
So yeah.
00:17:04.559 --> 00:17:11.039
And you've got uh some experienced players alongside you to help you both sides of those of that game.
00:17:11.039 --> 00:17:17.359
So obviously think of uh James Griffin, uh, who has played quite a few years back now.
00:17:17.359 --> 00:17:20.079
Uh sorry to griff on that one, but played for the Blaze before.
00:17:20.079 --> 00:17:30.720
But you've also got like sort of Ed Nags who's uh come through as a junior from Milton Keynes and Pete gave him his first call up, and now he's an established name in the NIHL.
00:17:30.720 --> 00:17:48.079
And then, of course, you've got like younger guys as well, such as Malik, who's become a natural leader of the team, and not forgetting, of course, uh the assistant coach Lewis Christie, who's uh probably is the ultimate stay-at-home defenseman in lightning history, uh, always put the team first.
00:17:48.079 --> 00:17:54.480
So there's a lot of experience that you can learn from in that defensive side of side of your game and from that attack attacking mindset, isn't there?
00:17:55.039 --> 00:17:55.920
Absolutely, yeah.
00:17:55.920 --> 00:18:05.519
I think especially because we're all a young a young D Corps, I think um, you know, will be uh lots of uh learning curves that we can learn off each other.
00:18:05.519 --> 00:18:07.039
So I think that'll be great.
00:18:07.039 --> 00:18:17.920
Um so but yeah, that's that's uh I'm just really looking really looking forward to uh being a part of that D Corps, young guys, um great skaters, great players.
00:18:17.920 --> 00:18:20.240
Um, so yeah, I'm really looking forward to it.
00:18:20.559 --> 00:18:25.680
Uh and you've both mentioned the fan base here, and uh I'll start with you, Jake.
00:18:25.680 --> 00:18:31.599
You've you've you've told about it, you've probably not really experienced Milton Keynes uh home fans on there.
00:18:31.599 --> 00:18:33.440
Is that something that you're quite looking forward to?
00:18:33.440 --> 00:18:40.880
And likewise, David, you've you've come into the rink before as as the bad guys say to speak, uh being on the opposition.
00:18:40.880 --> 00:18:44.480
Are you quite looking forward to uh hearing that noise in support of you?
00:18:46.640 --> 00:18:48.480
Uh yeah, no, I definitely am.
00:18:48.480 --> 00:18:54.160
I think it's um, you know, I think there was a little bit of it like where you like being the villain.
00:18:54.160 --> 00:18:56.880
I think I like being that guy that everybody hates.
00:18:56.880 --> 00:19:06.160
Um but yeah, it's definitely gonna be a different level of support when you have that many people, you know, cheering for you rather than wishing you were off the ice.
00:19:06.160 --> 00:19:08.880
So um, yeah, I'm really excited.
00:19:08.880 --> 00:19:20.079
I've I've been fortunate to play in some um some cities and places where you know the fan support was fantastic, and uh Milton Keynes is right up there with that.
00:19:20.079 --> 00:19:23.119
Like it's you know, it's tough, it's top-tier organization.
00:19:23.119 --> 00:19:28.720
I think it's the way players are treated and run, and the the just the passion from the fans, you can see it.
00:19:28.720 --> 00:19:31.279
Like, at least I saw it as a visiting player last year.
00:19:31.279 --> 00:19:34.960
Um, that's something that it that really excites me.
00:20:05.850 --> 00:20:06.810
Yeah, for sure.
00:20:06.810 --> 00:20:11.930
I think um the atmosphere is what you know makes the makes the game so fun.
00:20:11.930 --> 00:20:18.250
I think uh playing in front of all them fans here in the chats, um, it'll be great because I actually I think it was March.
00:20:18.250 --> 00:20:22.490
I think Milton Clean Mil and Keynes actually played Talford and I came and watched that game.
00:20:22.490 --> 00:20:25.290
Um, but yeah, the atmosphere was amazing, I couldn't believe it.
00:20:25.290 --> 00:20:30.730
So um being able to play in front of all these fans is it's definitely something I'm looking forward to.
00:20:32.330 --> 00:20:35.769
Great to hear, and I'm I'm sure the uh the fans will be looking forward to that.
00:20:35.769 --> 00:20:42.650
And we do say uh to every one of the new guys that's been on the podcast so far, the fans will come up with a song for each of you as well.
00:20:42.650 --> 00:20:52.330
So uh be sure to uh listen out, or if you have got any requests, uh be sure to uh speak to the relevant people up in the uh the noisy blocks because they'll be singing your names very soon, I imagine.
00:20:52.650 --> 00:20:54.810
You say that as if you're not one of them, Pimmy.
00:20:55.290 --> 00:20:57.130
I don't know what you're talking about.
00:20:57.130 --> 00:20:59.530
I I I have no idea.
00:20:59.530 --> 00:21:03.210
I I've never chirped David before when he scored against us for Telford.
00:21:03.210 --> 00:21:04.730
I don't know what you're talking about.
00:21:05.050 --> 00:21:06.570
No, nobody's ever done that.
00:21:06.570 --> 00:21:07.769
That's for sure.
00:21:10.890 --> 00:21:12.650
You gotta get on it, uh Pimmy.
00:21:12.650 --> 00:21:14.330
You gotta get a chance started.
00:21:15.370 --> 00:21:17.290
Be quite tough to do from the commentary box, though.
00:21:17.290 --> 00:21:18.490
I need to remain impartial.
00:21:18.490 --> 00:21:22.650
So uh yeah, someone else may have to take up the reins for that one for me for that one.
00:21:22.650 --> 00:21:25.050
I don't think I can multitask that well.
00:21:27.210 --> 00:21:41.530
No, but I do uh I want to sort of like just briefly speak on the as you said, you've mentioned a few of the players that you're looking to play with, but I just want to touch on the league in general as well.
00:21:41.530 --> 00:21:49.530
That especially for you, David, as this will be your technically third season um in the league.
00:21:49.530 --> 00:21:53.210
Um, and then Jake, this is your first coming in.
00:21:53.210 --> 00:21:59.130
But starting with you, David, have you seen the progression of the league as you've been in it?
00:21:59.130 --> 00:22:05.769
Because from an outside perspective, watching it does feel like every year the league is just getting up and up a level.
00:22:06.330 --> 00:22:07.290
Yeah, absolutely.
00:22:07.290 --> 00:22:13.450
I think the first year we came in, yeah, it was uh from that year to last season.
00:22:13.450 --> 00:22:15.850
I th I noticed a jump in play.
00:22:15.850 --> 00:22:18.970
Um, I can only imagine it's gonna get better next year.
00:22:18.970 --> 00:22:26.730
I think uh, you know, even just from talking like with my agent and stuff, like we're we're good friends, not just an agent like client relationship.
00:22:26.730 --> 00:22:28.250
So talk just talking to him.
00:22:28.250 --> 00:22:32.730
Just seems like so many guys from here now want to come over and play in the NIHL.
00:22:32.730 --> 00:22:36.009
Um and it's become a popular destination, which is great for the league.
00:22:36.009 --> 00:22:39.690
It just makes it, you know, more competitive, um, less watered down.
00:22:39.690 --> 00:22:46.250
And I mean, I think the imports that teams are getting now are like very quality imports.
00:22:46.250 --> 00:22:49.930
Um, and the British talents only getting better, you know.
00:22:49.930 --> 00:22:57.610
So it's um it's an exciting time to be in the league, and uh it'll be it'll be a fun season, I think.
00:22:58.890 --> 00:23:06.970
And then yeah, Jake, as as this is relatively new to you, you said you came over to watch uh a lightning game last season.
00:23:06.970 --> 00:23:10.410
Could you judge from that what the sort of the level is?
00:23:10.410 --> 00:23:13.690
Were you expecting it to be as high a level as that?
00:23:13.690 --> 00:23:15.930
Were you or what were you expecting really?
00:23:16.570 --> 00:23:21.769
No, I think I was I was really impressed with how um how the game was.
00:23:21.769 --> 00:23:29.370
Like it was really fast-paced um and physical, and especially with now that the imports have now been I think they it's added an import, right?
00:23:29.370 --> 00:23:36.570
So I think obviously um more high-quality players will be joining the league, which is you know it's gonna make it a more competitive league.
00:23:36.570 --> 00:23:46.970
Um and like David said, the the British prospects, um they're coming in as well, so they're making it more competitive as well throughout the teams and stuff.
00:23:46.970 --> 00:23:53.210
Um, but overall, yeah, like when I came to play, it was it was great to watch, it was fast, it was it was competitive.
00:23:53.210 --> 00:24:02.009
So um with it being my first my first time playing this league, I'm really looking forward to uh the high tempo and you know all that stuff.
00:24:02.170 --> 00:24:03.610
So great to hear.
00:24:03.610 --> 00:24:10.090
Uh and obviously now with as at the time of recording, it's already a couple of weeks away from the start of the season.
00:24:10.090 --> 00:24:13.850
Uh how is the uh preseason prep going on?
00:24:13.850 --> 00:24:16.250
Are you going uh both sort of in the gym?
00:24:16.250 --> 00:24:31.930
I know uh David you mentioned earlier, obviously you're you're working at the moment in Toronto, but uh when you've got that free time, is it being a case of if you can getting on some ice and being able to uh get ready for head of the uh meeting up with the team in a few weeks?
00:24:32.570 --> 00:24:33.450
Yeah, for sure.
00:24:33.450 --> 00:24:36.570
It's my summers, I always look forward to summer training.
00:24:36.570 --> 00:24:45.610
Um, yeah, I do I'm obviously mentioned you guys before, I'm doing my master's in clinical psychology, so to be a psychotherapist, deal with addictions and stuff.
00:24:45.610 --> 00:24:50.490
So my days are all the same, it all just blends into one long week.
00:24:50.490 --> 00:24:54.650
But it's um yeah, I always get up, go to the gym, do my workout.
00:24:54.650 --> 00:24:57.850
Um, Pete sent us our plan, so I just kind of followed that.
00:24:57.850 --> 00:25:07.850
Um, and then uh after the workout, yeah, I've been skating twice a week, roughly, which honestly, the last couple of seasons I just hadn't had time, and I was just doing goalie schools and just shooting pucks on goalie.
00:25:07.850 --> 00:25:13.930
So um I feel better at this point in the summer than I have probably the last couple of years just from skating with guys.
00:25:13.930 --> 00:25:16.970
My one of my close buddies is Matt Alvaro, he's captain of Guildford.
00:25:16.970 --> 00:25:21.769
So we have a a good pro group skate um in the summers here.
00:25:21.769 --> 00:25:28.970
Um a lot of EI guys, some guys in the Liga, like high-end, very high-end European leagues, um, which has been great.
00:25:28.970 --> 00:25:31.930
I've really uh benefited from doing that.
00:25:31.930 --> 00:25:39.450
Um, but yeah, it's always like get up, work out, do whatever I gotta do for school, go to work, repeat the next day.
00:25:39.450 --> 00:25:44.250
So it's very regimented, but um I'm at my best when I do that.
00:25:46.170 --> 00:25:46.890
Great hearing.
00:25:46.890 --> 00:26:02.009
Obviously, Jake, uh there's not as many rinks in Daventry as there are in Toronto, but uh, have you been able to chance to sort of get uh get ready like with the regimes like in the gym and if possible getting some ice time in either Coventry or Milton Keynes?
00:26:02.330 --> 00:26:03.210
Yeah, absolutely.
00:26:03.210 --> 00:26:06.730
So uh I've been uh there's been a skate on in Cobb once a week.
00:26:06.730 --> 00:26:08.250
I've sort of been hopping in that.
00:26:08.250 --> 00:26:12.890
Um, and obviously Milton Keynes have just started up their summer skates, so that's twice a week.
00:26:12.890 --> 00:26:31.690
So um obviously go down there, see a few of the boys, good to see the boys, and then obviously um Pete sent out a training program, so doing that um, you know, throughout the week, and then also I've had a summer job, so I've been pretty busy because my um my off season started end of March time, so a bit earlier to you guys.
00:26:31.690 --> 00:26:36.650
So um it's getting to that stage now where it's just I'm itching to get started.
00:26:36.650 --> 00:26:44.890
It's I've been waiting around too long, so uh um, but hopefully these next couple weeks will fly by and then before you know it will get started.
00:26:45.850 --> 00:26:52.570
Definitely, and uh obviously don't want to wish the time away, but I know uh a number of fans are chomping at the big to get back at the rig.
00:26:52.570 --> 00:26:55.290
And obviously, no hockey since early March.
00:26:55.290 --> 00:27:00.410
I imagine you're possibly just wanting to get on get on the ice now and just uh shoot some pucks now.
00:27:00.650 --> 00:27:01.769
Sure, yeah, absolutely.
00:27:01.769 --> 00:27:09.930
It's it's been a long off season, so uh so yeah, just can't wait to you know meet all the all the new guys and get started.
00:27:10.170 --> 00:27:24.970
Uh I know some of the guys have said that there's uh there's a WhatsApp group, so have you sort of been sort of chatting and getting getting to know some of them as well uh just just over the summer and uh getting to like fill them a bit so uh socially and sort of know what they're about?
00:27:26.810 --> 00:27:31.050
Uh I had a couple guys like reach out and say, like, welcome to the team, excited to have you.
00:27:31.050 --> 00:27:35.930
I haven't personally like been the loud personality that I normally am yet.
00:27:35.930 --> 00:27:50.650
I think uh you don't want to come in too hot, but uh yeah, once I get there and meet the boys and stuff, then I'll be able to kind of I'll feel a little more at ease uh chiming in here and there, but for now I'll let the uh returners kind of operate the group chat.
00:27:50.970 --> 00:27:53.290
Absolutely, just been laying low, yeah.
00:27:54.730 --> 00:27:59.530
I can imagine that the group is probably navigated by mainly the Hammels.
00:27:59.530 --> 00:28:01.690
That's that sounds like the ones that would come in.
00:28:02.490 --> 00:28:02.970
Oh, yeah.
00:28:02.970 --> 00:28:11.370
Carter, yeah, haven't met Carter yet, but it's he's he seems like a very lively personality, which is very similar to me.
00:28:11.370 --> 00:28:14.090
So I mean, I think he's pretty funny in there.
00:28:14.410 --> 00:28:18.490
You did meet him with the gloves off uh in Solway last season.
00:28:18.890 --> 00:28:20.170
He had his gloves off, yeah.
00:28:20.170 --> 00:28:21.530
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:28:21.530 --> 00:28:22.890
He had his off, yeah.
00:28:22.890 --> 00:28:24.730
I just stood there and soaked him.
00:28:24.730 --> 00:28:26.970
Yeah, that was a funny game.
00:28:26.970 --> 00:28:28.009
That was a funny game.
00:28:28.009 --> 00:28:29.290
He's like, I'm dropping him.
00:28:29.290 --> 00:28:30.890
I'm like, go ahead.
00:28:30.890 --> 00:28:32.810
I just tried to win the face off.
00:28:32.810 --> 00:28:34.970
Yeah, I think I got it on him, though.
00:28:34.970 --> 00:28:37.450
It showed up on my insta, so sorry about that one, Carter.
00:28:40.890 --> 00:28:45.210
I wanted to know now, David, if you're on Carter's list that he mentioned on his pod now.
00:28:45.210 --> 00:28:47.610
But he's probably had to strike you off as you're a teammate.
00:28:47.610 --> 00:28:50.090
So uh that'll be interesting to see.
00:28:51.370 --> 00:28:53.130
That was my first thought when he said that.
00:28:53.130 --> 00:28:56.090
I've watched all the podcasts, I just love I just love it.
00:28:56.090 --> 00:29:02.410
So it's yeah, it was it was funny he was saying that, and I'm like, yeah, well, I guess I'm glad not in Telford anymore.
00:29:02.410 --> 00:29:04.250
Get the wrath of the hammel.
00:29:05.769 --> 00:29:20.730
Uh and obviously, David, you've you've been in this league for uh uh a couple of years now, and the the other three the non-British trained guys, so the two Jared and uh Brady, they're new to the country and new to the league.
00:29:20.730 --> 00:29:36.170
So um do you feel that there might be a little bit of that extra leadership for you for those guys to sort of sort of tell them this is what the league's about and warn them against some of the uh some of the more uh characteristic rinks, shall we share shall we say in in the league?
00:29:36.170 --> 00:29:42.890
I mean, especially like we meant we talked about Solway, it's a great facility to go up to, but it's a very, very small pad, isn't it?
00:29:43.290 --> 00:29:44.009
Yeah, it is.
00:29:44.009 --> 00:29:51.610
It's honestly um I kind of like playing there just because the neutral zone's so small, like it punishes turnovers.
00:29:51.610 --> 00:30:04.170
Like if you're good, if you're you know, I think a team like us is gonna thrive in a rink like that because they just think we have so much talent and speed, and that you know, we get going if we get pucks going the other way in the neutral zone, we're gonna have a lot of two-on-ones, a lot of odd man rushes.
00:30:04.170 --> 00:30:17.050
Um, as far as the leadership, I mean, I'm happy to answer any questions they have, but I mean, these guys are are pros and have played in, you know, even Jared, like or whale is like this being his first pro year.
00:30:17.050 --> 00:30:23.690
Like he's played at UNH and he's played D1, he's played in the AJ, like uh, you know, all the places these guys have played.
00:30:23.690 --> 00:30:28.170
I mean, Brady played in the league I played in in Sweden last year, and you know, he's done well.
00:30:28.170 --> 00:30:30.250
And I mean, he was a five-year-old guy.
00:30:30.250 --> 00:30:31.769
These guys know what it takes.
00:30:31.769 --> 00:30:35.210
Um, you know, I think there's obviously I don't know.
00:30:35.210 --> 00:30:40.090
I'm trying to think when I first came to the league, there there probably is an adjustment a little bit.
00:30:40.090 --> 00:30:43.050
Um, but I think they'll do just fine.
00:30:43.050 --> 00:30:44.810
I think they're gonna adjust pretty quick.
00:30:44.810 --> 00:30:52.009
And um, you know, I've tried to see video on on them, and you know, I'm not a goalie expert at all, so I haven't, you know, I can't comment on Whaler.
00:30:52.009 --> 00:30:59.769
I just but I think the speed and the way you know Whitey and and Brady play, I think they're gonna be just fine.
00:31:00.410 --> 00:31:01.370
Yeah, great.
00:31:01.370 --> 00:31:06.890
And uh Jake, obviously there's a few rinks that you're familiar with from your junior days.
00:31:06.890 --> 00:31:14.970
Are there any uh particular buildings that you're thinking, I know it's tough to go in there that you're thinking if we go away with two points here, I'll we'll have done well.
00:31:15.850 --> 00:31:18.009
I think PIBA is up there for sure.
00:31:18.009 --> 00:31:21.530
I think uh very uh very cold rink.
00:31:21.530 --> 00:31:33.850
Um I've heard lots of stuff about the locker rooms as well, so uh um but yeah, I think I'm not entirely sure which other ones I've played at, but I think yeah, PIBA is up there for sure.
00:31:33.850 --> 00:31:39.130
Um it is a it's a tough one because the fans as well they're right on top of you right by Aplexie.
00:31:39.130 --> 00:31:41.530
I think the the whole fans as well as well.
00:31:41.530 --> 00:31:43.930
I've heard some stuff about them, they can be pretty brutal.
00:31:43.930 --> 00:31:49.210
So uh looking forward to uh to playing uh to playing up there.
00:31:50.490 --> 00:31:50.970
Amazing.
00:31:50.970 --> 00:31:52.890
I know the guys uh up in hull.
00:31:52.890 --> 00:31:57.370
I know they like to try and create an intimidating atmosphere, especially in the their home barn it.
00:31:57.370 --> 00:32:02.009
So there are some tough but tough things to go and get points points off in there.
00:32:02.009 --> 00:32:08.890
Um obviously though with the wider eyes pad at Milton Keynes, uh I think it's the biggest pad, is the biggest pad in the league.
00:32:08.890 --> 00:32:12.490
I think it's them that and uh Ice Sheffield because they're both Olympic size.
00:32:12.490 --> 00:32:14.330
Is that something that adds to the game as well?
00:32:14.330 --> 00:32:17.769
Because obviously there's a lot of far skaters on there, there's a lot of young guys.
00:32:17.769 --> 00:32:28.009
Is that really the energy that you can see, especially later on in the games, where forcing turnovers that could be a good good opportunity for the team for the lightning to bury teams?
00:32:29.530 --> 00:32:35.450
Yeah, I think um yeah, I think it's definitely something that plays to our advantage.
00:32:35.450 --> 00:32:38.090
Um, I honestly think we'll be good in any rink.
00:32:38.090 --> 00:32:49.690
Like I just I think of like a fast team, team that plays hard, competes hard, like like our team, and I don't see where we would fall short in a small or large ring.
00:32:49.690 --> 00:32:56.490
Um, I think the way you play could slightly be different, depending on if it's a bigger or smaller rink.
00:32:56.490 --> 00:33:01.769
Um, I I've played in different systems, like Sweden's very puck control, like don't dump pucks in.
00:33:01.769 --> 00:33:03.610
Like we at least that's how we played.
00:33:03.610 --> 00:33:11.450
Um, it was just if you if you don't have anything, you circle back, and like it was very like almost soccer style, where it was just possession.
00:33:11.450 --> 00:33:15.930
Um, and then you know, you go to a rink like Telford and it's completely the opposite.
00:33:15.930 --> 00:33:23.050
Um, and it was just, you know, I feel like I would try and get in harder on four checks and hit guys and be more physical.
00:33:23.050 --> 00:33:26.090
Whereas you do that in a bigger rink, maybe you're out of position.
00:33:26.090 --> 00:33:32.170
But I think I think the way Pete's gonna have us play, those hits are gonna be there where you're not throwing yourself out of position, you know.
00:33:32.330 --> 00:33:34.009
So I've not got much left.
00:33:34.009 --> 00:33:41.290
I do want to just ask both of you to sort of like give yourselves a message for the fans and what they can expect from you both.
00:33:42.009 --> 00:33:43.769
Um, yeah, I'll go first.
00:33:43.769 --> 00:33:50.570
Um I would say, I mean, I'm sure they've seen me play the last couple of years with Telford.
00:33:50.570 --> 00:33:56.650
I'm sure they kind of have an idea of what to expect, but you can expect somebody who won't uh shut their mouth, probably.
00:33:56.650 --> 00:33:59.450
Um yelling a lot at other guys.
00:33:59.450 --> 00:34:11.210
Um, but no, trying to I think just someone who competes, someone who competes hard, wants to win, is gonna go out there and score, is gonna go out there and produce, um, and just someone who's gonna play with a lot of passion.
00:34:11.210 --> 00:34:12.650
That's what I'll say.
00:34:14.170 --> 00:34:27.929
Yeah, I think from me, uh you can expect uh a lot of physicality, um, you know, high intensity, uh puck moving, um, you know, again in the nitty-gritty areas.
00:34:27.929 --> 00:34:32.969
Um probably as well, like David being a bit chirpy as well.
00:34:32.969 --> 00:34:35.050
You can probably expect some of that as well.
00:34:35.050 --> 00:34:40.170
Um yeah, that's that's uh that's what you can expect from me.
00:34:40.730 --> 00:34:42.490
Perfect tandem, me and Jake.
00:34:42.970 --> 00:34:43.690
Absolutely, yeah.
00:34:46.170 --> 00:34:48.490
Teams aren't gonna want to come up against you two.
00:34:51.210 --> 00:34:51.769
Definitely.
00:34:51.769 --> 00:34:58.889
Uh Jake, David mentioned earlier if he uh modelled himself about wanted to play a bit like uh Claude Lemieux.
00:34:58.889 --> 00:35:04.170
Was there any player that you wanted to emulate when you were coming through or that you looked up to?
00:35:05.210 --> 00:35:06.889
I think there's a few guys.
00:35:06.889 --> 00:35:10.250
I think uh Quinn Hughes, I think he's he's a great hockey player.
00:35:10.250 --> 00:35:13.289
You know, he's the way that he skates is unbelievable.
00:35:13.289 --> 00:35:19.769
Uh Rasmus Darlene as well, the way they move perks, see the ice, um, you know, high IQ.
00:35:19.769 --> 00:35:28.410
Uh it's just so I think you know, I like to I like to watch how they play and you know try to try to you know play like them.
00:35:28.410 --> 00:35:32.010
Obviously not as good as them, but uh that's how I like to mirror my game.
00:35:32.010 --> 00:35:32.970
Great stuff.
00:35:33.050 --> 00:35:36.090
And uh a quick up quick personal question there.
00:35:36.090 --> 00:35:39.690
David, I'm gonna make the assumptions you're a Toronto boy.
00:35:39.690 --> 00:35:41.930
Are you a Maple Leafs fan?
00:35:42.250 --> 00:35:43.690
Toronto sports all the way.
00:35:43.690 --> 00:35:50.889
Every Toronto sports team's tough right now for the Jays, but I still watch every game, and it's just yeah, yeah, I love I'm diehard.
00:35:50.889 --> 00:35:52.490
Everything Toronto, yeah.
00:35:52.490 --> 00:36:12.410
Great stuff, and uh obviously Toronto uh did it get caught up in the World Cup fever uh earlier on in the yeah, there was a bunch of games because I work for the Toronto Transit in the summer, so um, I'm in like the subway stations, and so it was just chaotic for those games, especially the days that they had games in Toronto too.
00:36:12.410 --> 00:36:16.490
That first game that Canada played, like it was the city was buzzing.
00:36:16.490 --> 00:36:18.329
So um, yeah, I followed it.
00:36:18.329 --> 00:36:21.930
Um my brother is a big soccer fan.
00:36:21.930 --> 00:36:24.250
I I haven't got into that fever yet.
00:36:24.250 --> 00:36:27.769
I'm very much basketball, baseball, hockey, uh, and golf.
00:36:27.769 --> 00:36:29.769
But yeah, it was it was awesome.
00:36:29.769 --> 00:36:30.730
It was cool to see.
00:36:30.730 --> 00:36:33.050
Like the city is such a diverse city, Toronto.
00:36:33.050 --> 00:36:36.250
So it's you know, it was that city was buzzing.
00:36:37.849 --> 00:36:39.050
Amazing, amazing.
00:36:39.050 --> 00:36:40.889
It it did look pretty spectacular.
00:36:40.889 --> 00:36:44.730
I saw the games at the Canada games, especially in Toronto and in Vancouver.
00:36:44.730 --> 00:36:55.690
So it looked like the fever had definitely caught on there, which was great to see because we know about hockey is massive over in Canada, but I know it, especially in Swaddle, the the Jays and the Raptors as well.
00:36:55.690 --> 00:36:57.849
They do get the crowd scene as well.
00:36:57.849 --> 00:36:59.610
Uh Jake, how about you?
00:36:59.610 --> 00:37:02.090
Is there a favourite NHL side of yours?
00:37:02.410 --> 00:37:05.050
I'm I'm a Penns fan, Bitspoke Penguins.
00:37:05.050 --> 00:37:12.010
Um, I don't even I don't even know how, but I think just some been watching them from a young age, I've been to a pens game, obviously.
00:37:12.010 --> 00:37:13.289
I think Sidney Crosby as well.
00:37:13.289 --> 00:37:14.570
I think he's a great player.
00:37:14.570 --> 00:37:18.410
Um, so yeah, just uh just a pens fan from the start, really.
00:37:19.530 --> 00:37:20.329
Uh that's fair.
00:37:20.329 --> 00:37:30.170
And I suppose I suppose actually when watching it probably would have been when it was Crosby and uh Molkin and the Heyday probably wouldn't have been yeah, so yeah, exciting teams to watch then.
00:37:30.170 --> 00:37:34.010
Uh uh David, can the Leafs get the playoffs this season?
00:37:34.010 --> 00:37:35.610
We won't talk about last season.
00:37:35.610 --> 00:37:39.289
We won't talk about last season at all because right now that was a mulligan.
00:37:39.450 --> 00:37:42.570
That was a mulligan, but uh I don't even know if they had a season.
00:37:42.570 --> 00:37:44.090
Did they play a hockey game last year?
00:37:44.090 --> 00:37:44.730
I don't know.
00:37:44.730 --> 00:37:46.570
They didn't show up, that's for sure.
00:37:46.570 --> 00:37:55.769
But um I'm more right now, I'm I'm stressing over the Jays right now because all the returners have uh have not been performing well, and then the Raptors.
00:37:55.769 --> 00:37:58.170
I'm waiting to see what happens with this Kawhi Leonard trade.
00:37:58.170 --> 00:38:00.730
So um I think the Leafs can do it.
00:38:00.730 --> 00:38:02.809
I think they've they'll be a bubble team probably.
00:38:02.809 --> 00:38:06.570
If I had to guess, they're gonna be on that brink of do they make the playoffs, do they not?
00:38:06.570 --> 00:38:09.210
But that's also the Toronto bias in me.
00:38:09.210 --> 00:38:13.369
I will never I will never shoot down Able Leaf team, the Raptor team.
00:38:13.369 --> 00:38:15.289
It's just the delusion that we have.
00:38:15.690 --> 00:38:17.050
Not the first round, right?
00:38:17.849 --> 00:38:18.410
Yeah, yeah.
00:38:18.410 --> 00:38:22.170
They got McKenna and he looks good right now in the summer skate you see.
00:38:22.170 --> 00:38:23.369
So we'll see.
00:38:23.369 --> 00:38:24.170
We'll see how it goes.
00:38:24.170 --> 00:38:25.369
I like the moves they've made.
00:38:25.369 --> 00:38:27.610
So yeah, we'll see.
00:38:27.849 --> 00:38:32.650
And uh are you heading when is it the uh you head up back over to the UK?
00:38:32.650 --> 00:38:36.090
Is it just a couple weeks before the uh the first game against Rostock?
00:38:36.730 --> 00:38:40.570
Yeah, so we get me and my girlfriend leave the 25th in the evening.
00:38:40.570 --> 00:38:44.970
We'll get here or get to uh London, we'll get there the 26th in the morning.
00:38:44.970 --> 00:38:46.970
Yeah, yeah.
00:38:46.970 --> 00:38:48.490
Very excited to get over.
00:38:48.490 --> 00:38:49.210
Yeah.
00:38:50.010 --> 00:38:50.809
I I imagine so.
00:38:50.809 --> 00:39:06.970
And obviously, you mentioned you mentioned your girlfriend as well, with obviously families and partners, especially for this sport, they they do almost it's also they load load you out for for our entertainment over the season without them their support, people wouldn't be there at all.
00:39:06.970 --> 00:39:14.010
So massive thanks to uh the wives, girlfriends, partners, and the families for all the players.
00:39:14.490 --> 00:39:15.610
Yeah, I'm very fortunate.
00:39:15.610 --> 00:39:22.410
She's been very supportive, and she's kind of like you know, she's a big reason why I'm still playing and will probably continue to play even when my school's done.
00:39:22.410 --> 00:39:29.289
I'm able to um start my post-hockey career virtually and work in online clinics, so I'll be able to play and do that.
00:39:29.289 --> 00:39:34.809
Um, and yeah, she's been she's been a rock, so very fortunate.
00:39:35.450 --> 00:39:41.369
And has that been somebody you've been interested in getting into uh as well just with with your studies?
00:39:41.369 --> 00:39:43.610
Is that an interest of yours?
00:39:44.010 --> 00:39:54.809
Yeah, so the way where I'm at in my program, so I'll be done all my schooling by April, by the end of the hockey season, and then May uh next summer I'll start my clinical practicum.
00:39:54.809 --> 00:40:08.090
So I'll be in um some uh addiction-based psychotherapy clinics, and I'm gonna do a sports psychotherapy clinic as well to help with athletes transitioning out of professional sports into, you know, they're no longer an athlete anymore.
00:40:08.090 --> 00:40:11.289
So um yeah, I'm I I'll be doing that.
00:40:11.289 --> 00:40:13.690
That's all virtual, which works with hockey.
00:40:13.690 --> 00:40:18.570
Um, I've already talked to the, you know, I have a couple interviews in September when I get there.
00:40:18.570 --> 00:40:21.690
And uh yeah, it all works out with the scheduling, luckily.
00:40:21.690 --> 00:40:24.250
So yeah, that's a hundred percent something I'm gonna do.
00:40:24.250 --> 00:40:29.289
Um, I think definitely a few years of doing both will will be manageable.
00:40:29.289 --> 00:40:34.329
And then when I'm ready to kind of I eventually want to open my own practice, uh my own practice and and stuff.
00:40:34.329 --> 00:40:37.369
So when I do that, then I'll probably shut it down.
00:40:37.369 --> 00:40:38.490
Yeah.
00:40:38.730 --> 00:40:39.769
Oh, that is amazing.
00:40:39.769 --> 00:40:43.769
That's uh especially the sports stars coming out of sports.
00:40:43.769 --> 00:41:04.570
It's something that's not really talked about enough enough, and especially this day and age of social media, we often see the money some of these elite sports stars go, but it's all they've known all their life, and then suddenly these sports careers, especially in the game at hockey, careers could be over quite quickly, like you lose an edge or something, and then that's uh a career career done, and it's a quick transition.
00:41:04.570 --> 00:41:06.970
So have that it's something that's really, really good.
00:41:06.970 --> 00:41:09.769
Um yeah, yeah, for sure.
00:41:09.930 --> 00:41:11.690
No, guys, that's your identity, right?
00:41:11.690 --> 00:41:15.930
And then as soon as you you transition out of your sport, you lose your identity, you don't know who you are.
00:41:15.930 --> 00:41:17.210
So a lot of guys struggle with that.
00:41:17.210 --> 00:41:19.530
A lot of guys and girls struggle with that, yeah.
00:41:19.690 --> 00:41:20.650
Yeah, amazing.
00:41:20.650 --> 00:41:24.570
And and Jake, outside of hockey, is there uh any interest that that you have on there?
00:41:24.570 --> 00:41:34.650
Obviously, you were over in America, there's probably a lot of uh learning and growing over there, but now you're coming back playing CD hockey in the UK for the first time.
00:41:34.650 --> 00:41:42.250
But is uh is that the the career path you want to say stay on hockey for now, or is there other stuff as well with that's in your interest?
00:41:42.889 --> 00:41:53.610
I think for now, obviously, the hot the hockey career, you know, that's I can see myself playing for I don't know how many more years, but also on the side, I'm actually doing a personal training course, level three.
00:41:53.610 --> 00:41:58.809
So uh, you know, over the season I'm I'll be uh uh completing that that's online as well.
00:41:58.809 --> 00:42:05.849
So um, you know, I have something to fall back on if you know if you know something bad was to happen, uh touch woods and nothing does.
00:42:05.849 --> 00:42:12.010
Um but uh but yeah, no, I'm completing that at the moment, so hopefully I'll be done with that by the end of the season.
00:42:12.010 --> 00:42:14.889
And uh so uh but yeah.
00:42:15.690 --> 00:42:20.090
Uh that's amazing, and just fantastic to hear from you both.
00:42:20.090 --> 00:42:32.970
And I can hear from you both, you're you're buzzing and really excited to be uh putting on the lightning jersey very soon, and I'm sure the fans will be just as excited to see you on the ice for that very first time.
00:42:32.970 --> 00:42:43.210
Uh, tickets for those games are now available, so be sure to check the lightning social pages for all the details for that and for the meet the players that's going on ahead of that Rostock game.
00:42:43.210 --> 00:42:45.769
Uh, the final message from you both.
00:42:45.769 --> 00:42:51.369
Uh for any fans who are umming and houring about whether they should buy a ticket or not to come and watch a lightning game.
00:42:51.369 --> 00:42:57.050
What's the one met what's the one message for them both to uh persuade them to come and uh watch the games?
00:42:57.849 --> 00:43:01.210
Do you want to see me and Jake yell at people come watch us play?
00:43:02.650 --> 00:43:05.769
There you go, it's been said, it's been said, there you go.
00:43:06.650 --> 00:43:07.210
Perfect.
00:43:07.210 --> 00:43:09.530
Well, thanks so much for your time, Tom guys.
00:43:09.530 --> 00:43:15.930
Uh obviously, uh very busy time is going on, and it's uh still a couple of weeks left of it before the season starts up.
00:43:15.930 --> 00:43:18.570

00:43:18.570 --> 00:43:20.730

Thank you.
