OCEANetwork: Hello, welcome to Lighthouse. I am Tauna Meyer from OCEANetwork Today we're going to talk a little bit about why OCEANetwork connects with homeschool leaders and organizations across the country. In September, OCEANetwork attended the annual National Alliance Leadership Conference, which is hosted by an alliance of nationwide and even worldwide Christian homeschool organizations, whose purpose is to serve the homeschool communities where they live. We also stay connected with this alliance year-round to stay up to date on what's impacting homeschoolers in the U.S. In fact, just The other day I sat in on a call about legislative updates nationwide. It's very important to stay connected and to understand what's happening and how it might impact us in Oregon. When you hear that a state homeschool organization is attending a national conference or talking with leaders in other states, it might sound like something that's happening far away from the day-to-day needs of Oregon families. And you might wonder: well, what does that have to do with me? Does it change anything for homeschoolers here in our state? Well, it does. Because the purpose of those relationships is to help us at OCEANetwork serve Oregon families with greater understanding, wisdom, and preparation. The laws that affect homeschoolers vary state by state. Oregon has its own homeschool law, its own legislative processes, and its own needs. At the same time, we're part of a larger homeschool community. Families and organizations in other states are facing questions that can help us think carefully about the questions that Oregon may face too. Connecting nationally helps us to pay attention, to learn from their experience, and to bring that perspective back home. One important benefit of these connections is that they help us see the wider homeschool landscape. A proposal or policy idea that emerges in one state can often shape conversations elsewhere, and developments across the country can help us recognize questions that may matter to Oregon homeschool families. We have definitely been seeing that a lot during these last few legislative sessions, where similar proposals have been pushed in various states by anti-homeschool groups. So it's imperative that we stay informed about these issues and prepared here in Oregon. Those connections also let us learn from people who've already worked through similar challenges. State homeschool organizations have experience answering families' questions, communicating about legislation, working with lawmakers, and helping parents understand their state's requirements. That's what we do here in Oregon. So understanding how other states do that can help us understand an issue more fully and consider how it might affect families here. So we bring all those ideas back to Oregon and consider what will serve families here best. Again, our laws and our communities have their own needs, so local knowledge will guide how we apply what we learn, especially when it comes to legislative activity. But it is important to keep the pulse on what is happening nationwide because it can and likely will affect us here in Oregon. This applies to more than legislative issues, too. We can learn from other organizations as we think about membership, family resources, events, volunteer teams, and ways to help parents find support. These conversations can spark practical ideas and help us serve Oregon families better. So I hope that gives you a little insight into one of the ways that OCEANetwork is working year-round to equip homeschool families and protect homeschool freedoms here in our state. Now we are working hard to get ready for the upcoming legislative session, and I'm excited that we're going to be sharing much more about that with you soon. In the next episode, specifically, we're going take a closer look at how OCEANetwork prepares for the legislative season and we'll talk about the work that happens as we monitor what is being proposed, study issues, and get ready to communicate with Oregon homeschool families. Thank you for listening to Lighthouse Homeschooling in Oregon with OCEANetwork.
