What if the difference between success and failure isn’t simply talent, knowledge, or opportunity—but the emotions driving our decisions?
Bob Raybould, creator of Success By Emotions (SBE) and author of Success by Emotions, has spent more than five decades studying how our emotional state influences performance, leadership, decision-making, relationships, and long-term success. His work centers on a powerful idea: emotions such as certainty, confidence, gratitude, and excitement can shape our actions long before the results of those actions become visible.
In this episode of Let’s Have This Conversation, Bob joins Kevin McShan for an exploration of emotional intelligence, peak performance, mindset, leadership, resilience, and performing under pressure. Bob explains how SBE is designed to help people reduce doubt, develop emotional consistency, and move toward their goals with greater confidence and purpose.
Bob's remarkable career provides decades of real-world examples of these principles in action. In 1961, when the Berlin Wall went up, he served in Germany as the Report of Survey officer for the entire Seventh Army, later receiving the Seventh Army Certificate of Achievement. He went on to build an extensive career spanning financial planning, mortgage banking, investing, entrepreneurship, performance coaching, and healthcare innovation.
His influence has also extended into elite athletics. In the mid-1980s, Bob introduced the University of Utah football program to Success By Emotions. Years later, coach Urban Meyer asked him to work with six players during an offseason, four of whom would eventually play in the NFL. Bob also worked with basketball player Johnnie Bryant, now an NBA coach, helping him improve his free-throw percentage by 10 points.
Bob's business career has been equally expansive. He co-founded TRI Financial in 1987 during a turbulent period for the financial industry, eventually helping build a loan portfolio approaching $2 billion. In 2000, he helped his son and a partner launch Arlington Value Management, and since 2010 he has invested in startups, particularly companies pursuing healthcare innovation in diagnostics and therapeutics.
Throughout these experiences, Bob continued studying a fundamental question: Why do people with similar knowledge, talent, and opportunities often achieve dramatically different results?
His answer increasingly came back to emotions.
During our conversation, we examine how emotional consistency can influence the way we respond to pressure, overcome self-doubt, make difficult decisions, lead other people, pursue ambitious goals, and navigate uncertainty. We also explore whether success begins internally before it becomes visible externally—and how greater awareness of our emotional patterns can potentially help us perform more consistently in business, sports, leadership, and everyday life.
At a time when people are navigating constant change, uncertainty, information overload, and increasing performance expectations, Bob's work invites us to reconsider the role emotions play in determining our outcomes.
Can learning to manage our emotions ultimately change the trajectory of our success?
Join us for a thought-provoking conversation with Bob Raybould about Success By Emotions, emotional consistency, confidence, performance psychology, leadership, decision-making, and what more than five decades of business and life experience have taught him about achieving meaningful and sustainable success.
