Pressure Is a Privilege

Blake Holman: Welcome to Lead with Clarity. This is a space for leaders who want to grow without losing themselves in the process. Each episode is a short reflection on leadership, influence, and the inner work that shapes how we show up for others. It's not hype, not noise, just clear thinking for the journey of leading well. Today's episode is entitled Pressure is a Privilege. Here we go. There's a moment every leader knows well. The deadline is close, the room is watching. And the weight of the decision sits squarely on your shoulders. Your pulse picks up. Your mind starts running through everything that could go wrong. In that moment, it's tempting to treat pressure as the enemy, as proof that you are in over your head. Ravi Shaw offers a different way to see it. He said, Pressure is a privilege. It means that things are expected of you. Let's say that again slowly. Pressure is a privilege. It means things are expected of you. Pressure is not a sign that something has gone wrong. It's a sign that someone believes you can handle what's in front of you. Nobody puts pressure on a person they do not trust with the outcome. You do not hand the hardest client conversation to the newest person on the team. You do not put the person you doubt in charge of the launch. Pressure finds the people who have already proven that they can carry it. Now here's a common misread. Many leaders interpret pressure as a verdict on their competence. They feel the tightness in their chest during a hard conversation, or the churn in their stomach before a big presentation, and they translate that physical sensation into a story about not being ready. So they either freeze, overthinking every angle until the moment passes them by, or they overcorrect and try to control every variable at once, which usually makes things worse, not better. Pressure is not a verdict. It's a byproduct of responsibility. The more people are counting on your judgment, The more pressure you will feel, because the stakes are simply higher. That's not a flaw in you. That is what it looks like to be trusted with something that matters. The absence of pressure would actually be the more concerning sign. It would mean nothing important is riding on what you do next. So the reframe is this When you feel pressure, ask yourself what expectation created it. Almost every time you will find that someone handed you their trust, whether that is a boss, a client, or a A team, or your own standards for yourself. The pressure is the shadow that trust casts. You cannot have one without the other. This does not make the pressure comfortable. It simply makes it meaningful. And meaningful pressure is something you can work with in a way that meaningless anxiety never lets you. This becomes even more relevant as leaders work alongside increasingly capable tools. A system can generate an answer in seconds, summarize a mountain of information. And remove some of the friction from a decision. That speed can feel like it should ease the pressure, but it cannot absorb the weight of the decision itself. It cannot own the consequences, and it cannot carry the responsibility that created the pressure in the first place. That part still belongs to you and it always will. If anything, the faster the tools move, the more the pressure concentrates on the one thing they cannot do, which is exercise judgment on your behalf. So the next time pressure shows up, before it walks into the room and takes over, try naming it out loud. Say plainly what is actually at stake to yourself or to your team. Naming it tends to shrink it down to something you can actually work with. Separate what is urgent from what is truly important, because not every pressurized moment requires an instant answer, even when it feels that way in the first 60 seconds. Ask what expectation created this particular pressure and asking. Let that answer remind you why you are the one standing here. And afterward, once the moment has passed, take a little time to debrief. Ask what that pressure taught you about your own judgment, what you would do differently, and what it confirmed you already do well. Pressure will keep finding you as you take on more responsibility, not less. That is not a warning sign to slow down or shrink back. It is usually a sign you are exactly where you're supposed to be, carrying exactly what you were trusted to carry. Let that be the thought you carry into your next high stakes moment. Not pressure as a threat to survive, but pressure as evidence that you belong in the room doing the work only you were positioned to do.
