Welcome back to today's episode of Joy Unleashed, I'm Coleen Greco your humble host and resident joyologist. And today I am so excited for those of you around the Boston area if you don't know the name Erin O'Malley, then you have been living under a rock. She is amazing. She has a beautiful story. And she is I guess like The Walking version of joy there is such a thing. So please welcome Erin O'Malley. The Walking version of joy is that is that a thing? Was that? Whatever, you know what I mean?
Erin O'Malley
That was super sweet. Thank you. That was so nice.
Coleen Greco
Joy personified. That's what I meant to say. Okay, let's cool. Let's scroll a bit.
Erin O'Malley
I love it.
Coleen Greco
Thank you so much for today. I'm so excited to have you please. For those. This is a TV show and a podcast. So some people are just listening, viewing give them an idea of who you are and what's it all about?
Erin O'Malley
Okay, so my name is Erin O'Malley. I've been on Mix 104.1. I'm here in January of 2001. So I've been on the station for 23 and a half years. I do 10 In the morning till two in the afternoon. And my my thing that I just I love to do every day is I tell feel good stories because I noticed years ago that every time I turn on the news, obviously with what we do we have to be informed about what's going on in Boston in the world, whatever. But I'm like wow, they always wait till the very end to do any kind of uplifting story if there even is one and we see more of that, like Mr. Rogers was something like we need a little bit more like let's take care of each other. Make sure our neighbors are okay that our families are good. Like, we just get so caught up in everything in life and it's so much easier to find negative so I started doing feel good stories and I do a couple every single day and it's just it's fun and it's light hearted and uplifting and I love making people happy. And so that's like the basic synopsis of of how I got to Boston and how long I've been here.
Coleen Greco
I love it. Well, thank you for all that you do because obviously as a joyologist, my whole thing is like helping people tap back into the joy that is in their hearts and not looking at externally for you know, like I guess things that make them happy but just trying to like, just embody the essence of that no matter what they're going through. So that's you're doing exactly the same thing. And I don't know maybe one day you'll add joyologists to your title and
Erin O'Malley
That is the best title! I'm like joyologists is super cool.
Coleen Greco
I made it up.
Erin O'Malley
I love it. Be a major like communications that's easy, but joyologists like Who wouldn't want a degree in joyology?
Coleen Greco
I love it. Well, I do have this this future dream of developing the Institute of joy
Erin O'Malley
I'll be your fundraiser. I'm all about it.
Coleen Greco
I’m saving money for that. Oh, awesome. Well, I mean, you're, you're very open about your life. Really? You're really athletic. You have like a really healthy lifestyle. Like what in you're also very open about your past with cancer and whatnot. Like, which came first Have you always been like really healthy and devoted to health and well being or was that a result of your diagnostic?
Erin O'Malley
No, I was actually in pretty good, like health when I got diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018. In fact, I had just done a half marathon at Providence half marathon. I think it was yeah, like nine days before I found the lung. And what was crazy was that I never miss a mammogram ever. In fact, I had dense breasts so I had to get the 3d mammogram which is way more telling than a regular mammogram. And I had a mammogram in December of 2017. It was totally clear. So the last thing I thought in May of 2018 was that I would have cancer and I actually found it by accident. I was never one to check myself which is why I like my platform now. Please check yourself because it literally saved my life. And I found it by accident, but I want people to like check on purpose. So I'm in my closet and it was gonna be a nice day the next day. I think it was May 17 And I wanted to wear a tank top and I found one I'm talking to myself because you know I do. I see the same top and I'm like, that'd be so much cute if these were just a little bigger, and I hit the tumor. Like I went like that and said if these were a little bigger, and I went with what the heck is that? , and at first I thought it was like hitting the side of my bra because it was really hard. Like wires and the first thing you do is go like this and I'm like so I ran downstairs to my husband. I was like, Hey, you feel these more than i do? Does this deal normal to you? And he's like, No, it actually and I thought this was a really good thing and I want women especially to remember, because you’ll know it. Actually it feels like a knot. Like when you get a massage, you can feel that they hit like something in your back that feels almost like knot. He said that's what it feels like. It feels like a knot. I've never felt that before. That's, that's not right. And so I immediately call my PCP who got me in right away and it ended up being stage two cancer already, like not six months after a weird 3d mammogram and I had what was called triple negative breast cancer and I think it's only like 12% of breast cancers are that the average person who gets it is either a very young female, or a black or latino female, I've been in none of those categories at all. So I'm was like, putting out like, how did this happen? And nobody knows but my oncologist said, if you hadn’t found that by the time your next mammogram rolled around, we would not be talking about curing it we will be talking about stage four. It had spread and because it's the fastest growing fastest spreading time, so I immediately like, right when I got the diagnosis, I you know, we freak out and start thinking of mortality and I have an 11 year old and back then it was Math 2,3,4 he was like 7, 8 no 6. I don’t remember it was a long day. But he was much younger. So he, I was so worried about like, oh my gosh, am I gonna get to grow up and then within I mean a day, I saw instead of thinking about that, like, I got angry that I was like, You know what? you mess with the wrong girl. I am not gonna just take this sitting down and I'm going to fight and I am gonna make sorry that you kind of mess with me. But for me with the job, it was like, Oh my gosh, I can use this to remind women to put their health first and, and there's purpose in it. I sought such purpose. And I am so thankful to this day that I shared it that my bosses and everybody were so kind to just say hey, if you don't want to share it’s your business. If you do we welcome it I mean, they couldn't have been more supportive. So that that helped on my journey to just include listeners and let them know what was going on at every turn. And I was hopeful that it would help other people who were newly diagnosed not be as scared
Coleen Greco
So first of all, thank you for sharing all of that because I know that it's there's trauma in that. And I know that there's also like joy and all kinds of emotions wrapped up in that. But it's so important for you to share a lot of those details, because there's so many women listening right now, that maybe don't feel like they should or worthy of having these emotions and it’s okay to be angry. Right? It's just not okay to stay angry. It’s okay to have that pity party and be like, Come on Why me? I'm so healthy. I do all these things right and go through the checklist of like, you know, physically fit I need Well, most of the time, right like I do all these things and and yet still. What if? But then you switched it and you turned it into your power. And I think that's so incredible. And that's inspiring, I'm sure 1000s of women and 1000s of listeners. So I would imagine they're all really inspired by that. And I love the fact that you're sharing like the accidental discovery of it too. I've always had this, this feeling. Could doctors come up with a prototype of what a lump actually feels like? Because I know my head. Speaking of dense. My head is very dense. And so like when I was delivering my older son I was like, how would I know when I’m suppose to push they're like, Oh, you'll know like, I don't think I will know. I'm pretty sure I won't know they come to find out they're like, don't you feel like pushing I'm like dude actually pushing since the minute I walked in. I didn't know that there was like a stage or a certain feeling that was happening. Like I have no idea.
Erin O'Malley
So to guide me a little bit. This is my first time.
Coleen Greco
Yeah.Give a little hints It feels like what right? Like I really wish there was some sort of prototype like when you hit this, that's what a muscle feels like. When you hit this This is like a rock. That's what a lump feels like. If somebody listening has the money and the design expertise. I think that would be so important for men and women.
Erin O'Malley
I have been saying that that the knot that you feel like when you're getting a massage and that person hits that one spot. You're like, Oh, I found the knot and it was exactly like that. He described it perfectly.
Coleen Greco
And yet flush to the skin. Like
Erin O'Malley
Just under it was it was just under the skin. But it was probably like, a couple of centimeters it was significant. And you could definitely feel it. You didn't have to push him too hard to feel it.
Coleen Greco
Oh my gosh! Well. And how are you feeling now? You but and I know your story. I want you to tell everybody how you're doing.
Erin O'Malley
I'm doing great. I had. So my my oncologist at Dana Farber. He's the chief medical officer and he's bringing genius and if you’ve seen any of the Dana Farber commercials he's always on. His name is Dr. Brunel and I'm so lucky to have somebody that just is so smart and just the best bedside manner. And from the minute I met and went through all of my scans and everything else, he said, I want you to keep contributing to your retirement fund because you're going to need it and that was after I had gone because when I first found out that I called my doctor I did south of town and I knew I wanted to go to Dana Farber, but I wanted to have information quickly that I could kind of gather and give to them. And so that that's what I did. I got all the information here. I saw an oncologist not far from where I live. And this guy was like, doom and gloom. He actually said he was scaring me and I go, what, what are my chances? And he said, Well, there's a 60 to 70 70% chance to you’ll still be here in 5 years. Like that's like a
school. That's not but just the fact that he just kind of blurred it out like 60 to 70% chances. And he was so nonchalant about he's like, You need to start chemo right now. And almost like I felt like scolding. It was the weirdest dealing and I just I knew that wasn't the right person for me, which I was planning on going to Dana Farber anyway but this guy didn't know that. So that's the other thing that I would say to women is make sure that you're comfortable with your doctor. Because you're gonna see a lot of him if God forbid, you do find something that ends up being cancer. And that person is going to be your life folks, you do not want to just go to somebody because they're convenient or you don't want to bother people with price. There are so many different organizations in our area. We're so lucky that we'll help you with rides if you need them It will help you with food and costs and everything. So most importantly, get somebody that you really trust because it's your life. It's there's nothing more important. And so when I saw him and that was the first thing he said to me, it was like wow, that is 90 day. Some guy that's telling me I may not be here, and the other guy that's like keep contributing to your retirement fund and of course my husband was sitting next to me and he said what retirement fund? so that was that was totally typical of my husband's making it off in a situation like that. But it was the greatest move to go there because they took such good care of me. I ended up having 16 weeks of chemo. So it was eight treatments because I had a treatment every other week. And then I had a double mastectomy. I didn't need radiation which was awesome. And then I had reconstructive surgery a couple months after a double mastectomy and I'm cancer free and so grateful for every day.
Coleen Greco
I love it. Yes, definitely. Now of course I skipped over my favorite question. I just got a little fan girl for a second . It’s my show whatever I'm gonna I'm just gonna ask the questions, whatever I feel like asking.
Erin O'Malley
Go ahead.
Coleen Greco
So joy, is the topic of the show. The show is called Joy Unleashed. What is joy mean to you? Like how would you describe it to your child?
Erin O'Malley
Peace, joy, that child is joy. I am so blessed to have him as you know my husband and I everyday are like, Oh my gosh, he's just such a sunshine. He is joy. He’s peace. He’s love joy. To me is just there's a lot of peace in joy for me and I find joy in the smallest thing is I can get so happy seeing a flower that is finally moving on a tree that planted two years ago and I'm just marveling at it I find joy in in pretty much everything and the thing that brings me the most joy is making other people happy or doing something that is going to make a difference in somebody's life. I love that I want to be somebody that makes the world a little bit better than what she found it. That is the joy of my life is making people happy. I just I say, I love it.
Coleen Greco
I say it all the time. I don't say that to take away anything from what you just said. But I really do believe that that my purpose on life. I don’t understand my purpose for a long time and I shared with you my son attempted suicide when he was 10 and that rocked us to our cores you might imagine. And I was working in corporate that I was doing IT marketing and I was in a leadership position and you know, just like I could do the job but I've been doing it for 26 years, but I didn't realize that it was slowly killing me. It was just like this shell of a person until that happened. And when that happened, I'm like pointing over there. Because that's not where it happened. But where I kind of woke up. I several weeks after his attempts. I was on that road right outside my door contemplating my own suicide because I didn't know how to make his I’m gonna cry again. I'm gonna make the situation better. And at that moment. I know it was God that says we're just going to love Him until we can’t love him anymore and we’re gonna love him more. You're just gonna get this not gonna stop. There were no doctors or therapists right in Boston. Like, How was that possible?
Erin O'Malley
Were they just all overloaded with people already or?
Coleen Greco
I made 100 phone calls I created to make 100 phone calls. We didn't get any phone calls back and after 100 I said I just got to know that's like two weeks of phone call. I just got to do this myself. Like I can't keep giving other people time that I need to give to him. So it was through joy, that that allowed us to feel. Joy in the smallest moments is one of my little inputs, that’s what we did. You know, in the early days. Maybe much like your diagnosis you're thinking in seconds, right? I can't think about what to have that's that's way too far in the future. I'm trying to get to the neck. And so you did that through joy and we were just looking at these little things like Instagram so that we could say that right a little puppy reels or whatever the cat reel or own dog in being a bit of a lunatic until it was to enjoy ittle bits of joy together. Until like that encapsulated. Most of our day in our day wasn't consumed with the fact that he was being bullied that all of his friends left him with like all these awful things happened. And that's what put me on the path to my calling was knowing that if I can feel that situation and myself, because I was then broke into my husband, my other son we were all a mess. That that's what I was put on this earth to do and it's been an absolute amazing emotionally charged ride and I just love connecting with other people that feel much the same. Can't make it through this, this world without someone else like we are hardwired for connection.
Erin O'Malley
We absolutely are I so believe that. Oh my gosh what you’ve been through and I love how you turn it around. Like that is such so powerful to be able to take something that is the lowest moment and turn it into something that's going to help others
Coleen Greco
I like to say now that he annoys me in the way that every 17 year old should
Erin O'Malley
That’s a good thing. That’s a good thing.
Coleen Greco
I know. I don’t take for granted when laid off. I never thought I would have the opportunity to even have that situation. I don't take for granted prom or any other moment. Ever. Never
Erin O'Malley
I won’t blame you. I would be there. Everything is just a gift.
Coleen Greco
So tell me about, you know, like he's… I’m having a senior moment.
Erin O'Malley
That’s okay I don't know what 11 Minus five is.
Coleen Greco
So I know when I'm like when was the COVID? Like the moments of positivity that you're doing every day, like you talked a little bit about how you brought that to Boston like how do you keep that going? Where are you finding people and how do people get connected to that? Is that an opportunity for people or?
Erin O'Malley
Oh yeah! I love it when people call in and say, you know, it's just in my community. I love getting on the air and talking about it and I'm always I actually started something to that along with just egular feel good stories. Give me your good so if somebody has like something great that happened even if you don't think it's a big deal, it is a big deal. Like, oh, well, you know I got a little promotion at work. Well, you know what, that's inspiring. We want to hear about that. Like tell me, what were you expecting it? What is it? How much of a difference to make in your life, things like that. I want to celebrate that. It's good to have a community around you that can rally and be proud with you. And so I love when people call and tell me stories like that because it's, it's going to make somebody else feel inspired to maybe, maybe I'll ask for a little bit more responsibility. Or a promotion or something. Maybe I can get it to and you know, you don't you don't know if you don't if you don't try and I'm always scouring. Like you said, Instagram, Facebook. I'm on a bunch of different Joy websites like what you're talking about just feel good websites that have stories of local towns all over the country. And so I'm always scouring find something that I feel like people would love to hear about and I love telling the story because I get really excited sometimes.
Coleen Greco
You're so great, though, that self promotion is something that I would say are generally correct that that don't feel comfortable for some reason, or maybe it's a worthiness issue or that nobody would listen or it's not quite big enough. I hear.
Erin O'Malley
Women also don't want to feel like they're bragging or something and I like I want you to brag like let's let's take a moment celebrate you what you have accomplished. What you're proud of today, like I just feel like women, propping up women is huge. Something I think we had when we were kids, you know we had this group of friends that kind of cheered each other on I mean, you're always gonna have somebody that you don't agree with or fight with. And that's part of growing up and stuff but I still remember having like a core group of girls that we grew up together and we were always like, cheering each other on for styles. And what if one of us was in the plays and other one was on the swim team and other and we'd all go in and cheer each other on to whatever the other person was doing? And I feel like we need that in adult life to
Coleen Greco
Oh, I'm like trying to show that I literally just started by the time this airs, the challenge will be over. So I started the unstuck challenge and I have a private Facebook group. It just started today. A private Facebook group. Only women that I don't let any any sense of shame that I discover you're out any kind of like self deprecation. I am loving all of it. That's what I'm trying to create there is that I felt like growing up I actually didn't have now I have a good group of friends. But I think at times they could be self serving. And so I want to be that cheerleader and most people never felt like they had a loving said that.
There was a section of the population that is completely self serving. They're going to find themselves on their own island where it's going to be a day where they need our love. And we've got to be able to help each other out for that time to come. So So glad you said that because that's that's absolutely the direction that the island is headed because I think it's so important. I like to say we all have a number of like these three, it might be 3000. Like let's let's spend it in the most supportive, like enlightening, fun atmosphere we possibly can. Exactly. I love it. Yeah, the self promotion thing. I'm constantly like I have I do some private coaching too. And I have this one client last week that I think I love myself. And I was like because that's one of the foundational things so I'm like my let's do it. And she's like, What are we here to like, oh, no, no, we can find her here like, hey, fine. I'm not about to get myself a high five. We're not getting off this call.
And I will make her stay on the call because she can do it. She texted me over the weekend. She did something else that was on her list. And I said and she's like an iWatch and I was like no.
Erin O'Malley
And I was like yep. I love that so much. Oh my gosh, that is so powerful. That is so it's small, but it's like people don't take the time to celebrate themselves. Right? You've got a yes, I show it. I so agree and you are so much is so much stronger than you know and sometimes and I really believe this and I've seen it so many times in life like just different things of you don't know how strong you are until you have no choice and things like that. And as cliche as they can be there's a reason why they exist and they exist and keep thriving through time. It doesn't go away because it's true. will sometimes get to a point where it just you don't know where to go and you're so stressed out and you have strength. Do not realize that when when I found the lump and I went through the process of finding my doctor at Dana Farber, I actually said all year I announced everything that was going on and I go off the cuff I go you know what? I actually have a Wonderwoman shirt with a key. I think I'm gonna wear it to my appointment tomorrow. Or Monday. She was on a Friday and I noticed it and I had my first Monday. I'm gonna wear my Wonder Woman shirt, cancerous covenant show. And I wore it and when I was there, I had so many people. Hey, I love that shirt that you're wearing that there was another woman that I met waiting to see my doctor just a picture. But it made other people around me smile and it gave them inspiration and hope. So I wore a Wonder Woman costume to every single chemo appointment I had and the last chemo I came in with actual like leather with the shield and the big sword from the money I had and he said on my on my shield last to like today and I wore that for the last time I checked out the house. Empowering but again, I was only going to do that the first day. But then when it made people happy I thought Why wouldn't I just every time and one time was probably my sixth visit. I have other clothes. I just feel just clear. I actually have other clothes that I eat and he's like No, I think it's really cool. Dress like this and I have people that actually come in after you that are like Wonder Woman Shut up. making people smile or whatever. It's worth it and I it may be in this subject. But it made me look forward to chemo because I knew that I had the power to make other people around me smile when they were having the worst day and that it doesn't sound crazy at all. So I will forget
Coleen Greco
that around the whole self promotion thing. Yes, you should be promoting yourself when you've been really proud of yourself. But to your point, it's even more important to speak your truth because you have no idea of who else it's going to inspire and what it might work out for someone else. So I forgot to say that earlier because of course I have ADHD and I forget everything. But then the other thing is no, you have to turn a tough situation into something positive because the more positivity we put out there and this is like actual science This isn't even the more you drag in, the more you invite in and so if you go in with your head hung low, and it was me attitude, that sentence that the other guys you had you know, that's what you're drawing in and you're like attracting more of that negative energy. So I think it's great. I have a friend that I think she wore like a Carebear t shirt or two to the far left. Right. I was like, Yeah, you're going out of style like going out of your treatment.
And I think she had a TR oh it's my kind of girl right? So this has been awesome. I could talk to you all day and I will text you after we're done about random.
We're bonded for life. But one of the questions I love to ask. I hear from people a lot that they struggle to kind of have that daily foundational practice that helps them kind of start the day off in like a joy frame of mind. So do you have like a morning ritual or evening ritual
Erin O'Malley
allows you to start the day off on the right foot. I do actually I wake up before my husband works it out just about every day and just have a little bit of me time and first thing I do is grab coffee because I I love coffee and my it's like my advice. And during chemo, I couldn't drink and it made me sick. And usually when you try to get off this coffee, you get a horrible headache and I didn't even get a headache. So most people then will probably never have it again. But I kept trying to drink it was over and finally I was like it's just my fun morning. I haven't been to Prague every day and I go in the basement and do some sort of workout or I'll go to the local why and when I do something that's just like for me for about anywhere from a half an hour to an hour which just need to try and I love doing it then because I've never been worried but it's the one time that I do something for me that I don't I don't feel selfish about it. It's not taking away from any other plans that you might have as a family. The only excuse not to do it. I might be tired, but I'm gonna be tired anyway. So and if I put it off, I had a trainer told me years ago. He put off working out until the afternoon and so many excuses come and so many things just happen in a day that you are going to be way more likely to stick with it in the morning because we should have that so I do that but I've never necessarily been called fanatic or whatever. And I was kind of bad that I'm like women. I just didn't have their Nikes going now. I thought we're supposed to like take care of ourselves and eat right and whatever to be healthy and I'll never forget this and I'm so glad that I was strong and healthy. When I did get diagnosed. My apologies said here's the thing, you I can see your veins so I don't even need to port forward. Because that's one more star. We don't have to worry about having the new are so healthy that i i can get get me through this like we're going to get through this and being healthy is this is why we tell people try to be right and try to take care of yourself and exercise. It doesn't mean you're not going to get cancer. It doesn't mean you're going to get sickness at some point. But if you are healthy, it's one massive piece of the puzzle that you have in your favor because you don't have to fight other kinds of sicknesses to get through whatever you're diagnosed with. And I thought that makes sense.
Coleen Greco
At first, like what am I doing? No, I'm so glad you brought that up because I do get a lot of clients that eventually you know, discovered disease usually it's like type two diabetes or high blood pressure and that is really the cause them to finally take care of their bodies to do it all along. It doesn't mean you're completely staving off some sort of disease to panic and worry about a lot faster. You're absolutely right. So he shared that with you and that stuck with you. I'll leave this with you that my my the thing that I use in the morning to get out of bed as I've worked out before my excuses breakout.
Erin O'Malley
Better get downstairs my brain to work better go get there man and they can they can really talk you out of it. But I also remember because I think you're also it's helpful to have something that motivates you for a reason not not necessarily like I'm going on vacation I want to look like it's not. It's something that can be long lasting and for me. during chemo, I started getting neuropathy in life. And I remember going oh my gosh, I'm never going to be able to run again. I mean, I couldn't even finish my award in high school people so it's not like I was like always athletic runner or whatever. But I I kind of like it feels like therapy to me, like, even if it's just a couple miles like it's there. And when I was losing the feeling behind my feet, I thought oh my gosh, I'm not gonna be able to do this again and my husband said one step at a time. Let's just get through this and see what happens. So I still can't feel a third of my left foot but I was like, I'm not gonna let that stop me from doing.
