درباره این اپیزود
Feeling behind this week? Check whose ruler you’re holding. In this minisode I share the appointment where a doctor I’ve known for years responded to my new chapter with “we’ll see how long this lasts” — and how the old me would have carried that sentence home. Plus the mayflies that covered my car one night and what they taught me about underwater seasons: growing unseen isn’t behind, it’s before. Hand back the ruler.

00:00:04.160 --> 00:00:14.800
Hey, it's Miriam, and it's your Wednesday pick me up on Imperfectly Courageous just a few minutes right in the middle of the week because the middle is where we usually need it the most.
00:00:14.960 --> 00:00:16.399
Let's dive in.
00:00:20.239 --> 00:00:33.359
The other night I walked out to my car in the parking lot after doing a late night grocery run, and it was covered, covered in mayflies, hundreds of them around, wings catching the street light.
00:00:33.600 --> 00:00:36.719
And here's the thing about mayflies that stop me.
00:00:36.880 --> 00:00:42.719
They live underwater for a year, sometimes two, growing unseen in the dark.
00:00:42.960 --> 00:00:46.079
And then they get out one day in the light.
00:00:46.399 --> 00:00:51.439
One, and nobody looks at a mayfly and says it's behind schedule.
00:00:51.840 --> 00:00:56.719
Hold that image because it's exactly where this week's pick me up is going.
00:00:57.200 --> 00:01:01.840
Let me share with you a conversation that could have wrecked my week once.
00:01:01.920 --> 00:01:03.039
And it didn't.
00:01:03.280 --> 00:01:12.000
I was at an appointment with a doctor I've known for years, smart, accomplished, someone whose opinion once would have had carried a lot of weight with me.
00:01:12.159 --> 00:01:18.159
And I shared my excitement that I had left the corporate world and I was building something of my own.
00:01:18.400 --> 00:01:21.280
This work, this show, this life.
00:01:21.840 --> 00:01:23.439
And you know what came back?
00:01:23.760 --> 00:01:24.879
A little smile.
00:01:25.120 --> 00:01:28.560
And well, we'll see how long this lasts.
00:01:29.680 --> 00:01:42.879
Now, there was a version of me, and not that many years ago, who would have carried that sentence home, turned it over at 2 a.m., let it move into the guest room of my mind, and start rearranging the furniture.
00:01:43.200 --> 00:01:44.879
But here's what happened instead.
00:01:45.120 --> 00:01:48.319
I noticed this sting because it did sting.
00:01:48.480 --> 00:01:49.359
I'm human.
00:01:49.599 --> 00:01:51.359
And then I noticed something else.
00:01:51.599 --> 00:01:54.239
The sentence wasn't a measurement of me.
00:01:54.400 --> 00:01:57.760
It was a measurement of what that person could imagine.
00:01:57.920 --> 00:02:05.680
A ruler that only knows how to count job titles and pension years and things that look secure on paper.
00:02:05.920 --> 00:02:13.280
They were measuring my leap with a ruler that had no markings for faith or becoming for a woman growing underwater.
00:02:13.520 --> 00:02:23.919
So I smiled and I left the appointment, still carrying my own excitement, because I'd stop handing out my worth for other people to appraise a long time ago.
00:02:24.240 --> 00:02:28.479
So here's your midweek truth, and I want you to take it all the way in.
00:02:28.639 --> 00:02:37.280
If you've been feeling behind or small or foolish for believing in your own becoming this week, check whose ruler you're holding.
00:02:37.520 --> 00:02:42.479
Because most of the pain isn't the dream, it's the borrowed ruler you're measuring it with.
00:02:42.639 --> 00:02:49.439
Somebody else's timeline, somebody else's definition of secure, somebody else's, we'll see.
00:02:49.599 --> 00:02:51.759
You're allowed to hand the ruler back.
00:02:51.919 --> 00:02:57.680
You might be in your underwater season right now, growing where nobody can see it yet.
00:02:57.919 --> 00:03:01.120
That's not behind, that's before.
00:03:01.759 --> 00:03:02.560
That's it.
00:03:02.800 --> 00:03:04.159
That's a whole pick-me-up.
00:03:04.319 --> 00:03:10.479
No homework, just maybe this week, when we'll see how long this last comes up at you.
00:03:11.439 --> 00:03:15.120
From someone else or from the auditor in your own head.
00:03:15.360 --> 00:03:16.000
Smile.
00:03:16.639 --> 00:03:18.000
Hand back the ruler.
00:03:18.159 --> 00:03:18.960
Keep growing.
00:03:19.199 --> 00:03:24.319
Thursday, I'm back with a real tool how to feel a feeling without drowning in it.
00:03:24.479 --> 00:03:26.000
You won't want to miss that one.
00:03:26.159 --> 00:03:28.960
Until then, be imperfectly courageous.
