Fires, floods, earthquakes and cyclones seem to be happening all the time now, and with ever-more intensity. This year has seen records being broken in many areas in terms of the frequency and intensity of such events. At least where human beings are concerned, these are records that aren’t to be wanted.
Yet, can we pin all of what’s happening on global warming, and might Mother Nature herself be telling us that it’s time to take serious note of how we’re impacting her natural order?
These are the questions we’ll explore in the latest edition of Impact! as we delve into Gaia Theory, examine how interconnected Earth systems and human activity influence disaster risk, and get specific on what might really be behind these awesome phenomena. As always, we then move to where our intentions and prayers may be most needed.
intentions and prayers start at 22 minutes 23 seconds.
Suggested Intention Focus for this week
This week, as we reflect on the large number of intense natural disasters this year, we suggest holding as our main intention:
We will that the intensity and frequency of natural disasters this year will motivate the governments of all nations to redouble efforts to act decisively with measures to reduce or contain global warming, and that those who continue to advocate for such actions among them will remain resilient in their advocacy.
Please join us in holding this.

00:00:04.242 --> 00:00:09.003
Hello, I'm Ellen Bentz, coming today from Wheaton, Illinois, in the USA.
00:00:09.746 --> 00:00:13.907
Welcome to Impact, a podcast about how we can each bring about real change in
00:00:13.907 --> 00:00:16.729
the world and getting practical in making that happen.
00:00:17.089 --> 00:00:20.617
And hello, I'm Clive Johnson, coming today from Leoncy in the UK.
00:00:21.077 --> 00:00:25.469
A special welcome if you're listening for the first time, and a big thank you to our new subscribers.
00:00:25.974 --> 00:00:30.137
Each week we look at one aspect of how we can connect our hearts to offer healing
00:00:30.137 --> 00:00:34.147
for others with our collective intention, prayers, and meditation,
00:00:34.664 --> 00:00:38.057
and go behind the headlines of a critical happening in our world that needs
00:00:38.057 --> 00:00:39.668
our attention right now.
00:00:40.326 --> 00:00:45.057
In today's episode, we take one of these regular deep dives to more fully understand
00:00:45.057 --> 00:00:49.987
and tune in with something many of us may know only a little bit about and see
00:00:49.987 --> 00:00:52.638
where we might hone in with our prayers and intentions.
00:00:52.987 --> 00:00:57.137
And as we record, it's August 26, 20, 26.
00:00:59.857 --> 00:01:04.136
So, 26, 26. No, the August, the 08 doesn't add up to a good number sequence, does it?
00:01:04.891 --> 00:01:08.536
Sometimes you get it. You know what I just realized? It's my half birthday. Is it?
00:01:10.157 --> 00:01:11.805
Oh, well, happy birthday.
00:01:14.086 --> 00:01:18.238
So, in last week's episode, we reflected upon the massive ongoing and growing
00:01:18.238 --> 00:01:23.378
human crisis brought about by Canada's wildfires this year, some of which continue
00:01:23.378 --> 00:01:25.503
to burn and remain out of control.
00:01:26.223 --> 00:01:29.368
Wildfires have also been much in the news in Europe this year,
00:01:29.368 --> 00:01:32.324
including in regions that are not used to fighting them.
00:01:33.003 --> 00:01:37.154
And, of course, there are many other natural events occurring virtually constantly,
00:01:37.624 --> 00:01:39.522
affecting some part of the world.
00:01:40.225 --> 00:01:46.878
Typhoons and cyclones, earthquakes, flooding, drought We often cover such major
00:01:46.878 --> 00:01:52.537
disasters Yet we got wondering, are these happening more frequently than before?
00:01:52.938 --> 00:01:57.108
And could it be that Mother Nature is screaming at us to wake up to the possible
00:01:57.108 --> 00:02:02.719
actions we humans may be taking That are encouraging the regularity and intensity
00:02:02.940 --> 00:02:07.142
of what for us are invariably catastrophic events?
00:02:08.124 --> 00:02:11.962
In this episode, we seek answers to these questions.
00:02:12.705 --> 00:02:17.241
By exploring the idea that Mother Nature, sometimes known as Gaia,
00:02:17.822 --> 00:02:23.460
always acts to restore harmony in the natural order, creating and destroying
00:02:23.460 --> 00:02:29.461
as necessary, and a constant drive to bring about the optimum conditions for healthy life on Earth.
00:02:30.018 --> 00:02:35.530
This is the well-known concept of Gaia theory, developed in the 1970s by the
00:02:35.530 --> 00:02:41.738
British scientist James Lovelock, who worked closely with microbiologist Lynn Margulis.
00:02:42.365 --> 00:02:48.106
It presents the idea that life in Earth's systems form one tightly connected evolving system.
00:02:48.396 --> 00:02:54.210
In other words, organisms, oceans, atmosphere, soils, and rocks continually
00:02:54.210 --> 00:02:57.882
affect one another through a countless number of feedback loops.
00:02:58.532 --> 00:03:02.660
The theory suggests that across long periods, some of these interactions can
00:03:02.660 --> 00:03:07.980
help keep conditions within ranges compatible with life, such as atmospheric
00:03:07.980 --> 00:03:11.585
composition, ocean chemistry, and temperature.
00:03:12.251 --> 00:03:16.599
Gaia is the ancient Greek name for Earth as a primordial goddess.
00:03:17.098 --> 00:03:22.410
Lovelock adopted the name because it spoke about the idea of a planet-scale whole.
00:03:23.007 --> 00:03:27.227
This led some to see Gaia as Mother Earth as a living conscious entity.
00:03:27.964 --> 00:03:32.753
That interpretation isn't what Lovelock's scientific hypothesis proposes.
00:03:33.282 --> 00:03:37.873
The theory doesn't maintain that Earth has consciousness, intention,
00:03:38.140 --> 00:03:41.855
moral judgment, or a wish to punish or educate humanity.
00:03:42.221 --> 00:03:47.376
However, it's not an idea that some of us might quickly dismiss.
00:03:48.029 --> 00:03:52.520
Lovelock's theory was controversial because it suggested that Earth deliberately
00:03:52.520 --> 00:03:54.745
sought conditions favorable to life,
00:03:55.192 --> 00:03:59.796
with critics arguing that natural selection operates on organisms and genes,
00:04:00.109 --> 00:04:04.190
not automatically on the whole planet, and pointing out that life has sometimes
00:04:04.190 --> 00:04:08.207
transformed Earth dramatically rather than maintaining stable conditions,
00:04:08.416 --> 00:04:11.399
for instance, the rise of oxygen in the atmosphere.
00:04:11.952 --> 00:04:15.586
Whether we understand the Earth as a single living consciousness or not,
00:04:15.871 --> 00:04:21.107
Gaia theory did help offer a key insight that's of interest to us in our current inquiry.
00:04:21.722 --> 00:04:30.401
That the atmosphere, oceans, land, ice, geology, and biosphere must be studied as coupled systems.
00:04:30.975 --> 00:04:35.610
However, the theory doesn't assume that Earth will automatically restore a safe
00:04:35.610 --> 00:04:36.966
environment for humans.
00:04:37.494 --> 00:04:42.850
Our planet may remain dynamic and life-bearing while becoming far less hospitable
00:04:42.850 --> 00:04:47.450
to particular species, which, of course, may include Homo sapiens.
00:04:48.013 --> 00:04:52.883
However, we should say that there are views among philosophers and theologians
00:04:53.104 --> 00:04:57.481
that regard the earth, and indeed the entire cosmos, as being alive,
00:04:58.073 --> 00:05:04.340
minded, or ensouled, although as yet, no scientific evidence has been offered
00:05:04.340 --> 00:05:06.310
to support the earth being a single
00:05:06.310 --> 00:05:11.296
consciousness organism with intentions comparable to a human or animal.
00:05:11.679 --> 00:05:17.290
Cosmopsychism is one example which maintains that consciousness is fundamental
00:05:17.290 --> 00:05:22.366
at the level of the universe as a whole, and individual minds may derive from
00:05:22.540 --> 00:05:25.669
or be aspects of cosmic consciousness.
00:05:26.505 --> 00:05:30.871
Where such theories are concerned, we could say that if consciousness is fundamental
00:05:30.871 --> 00:05:35.468
for life in the cosmos, a sufficiently integrated system such as the earth,
00:05:36.025 --> 00:05:40.431
with its atmosphere, biosphere, oceans, soils, and geological cycles,
00:05:40.965 --> 00:05:43.676
might have its own inner sense or experience.
00:05:44.152 --> 00:05:49.301
However, this remains what we might understand as a spiritual worldview rather
00:05:49.301 --> 00:05:50.863
than a scientific theory.
00:05:52.337 --> 00:05:56.661
Yeah, I don't know much about cosmopsychism myself. Lovelock,
00:05:56.661 --> 00:06:03.193
I believe, coined the phrase Gaia hypothesis on the suggestion of his neighbor,
00:06:03.797 --> 00:06:08.144
who was one William Golding, who wrote Lord of the Flies.
00:06:08.707 --> 00:06:11.691
Thank goodness. How they came to live together, but apparently they were very
00:06:11.691 --> 00:06:16.121
good friends. And yeah, I think I read somewhere that it was Golding who originally
00:06:16.121 --> 00:06:18.326
suggested Gaia as a name for the theory.
00:06:19.023 --> 00:06:23.681
Interesting. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. And Lord of the Flies, of course,
00:06:23.681 --> 00:06:28.420
was a book all about human beings doing bad things when they're left to their own devices.
00:06:28.530 --> 00:06:33.242
So, you know, in a different way, sort of touching on the same topic, really. Right.
00:06:33.901 --> 00:06:37.738
So what are the disasters that have been happening this year?
00:06:38.498 --> 00:06:42.261
This year has already seen a relentless succession of floods,
00:06:42.261 --> 00:06:45.482
wildfires, tropical cyclones, and major earthquakes.
00:06:46.126 --> 00:06:49.969
The effects of global warming are loading the dice towards more damaging heat,
00:06:50.236 --> 00:06:53.487
heavy rainfall, drought, and fire weather events,
00:06:53.992 --> 00:06:59.030
although earthquakes remain primarily products of normal plate tectonics,
00:06:59.477 --> 00:07:02.297
not related to climate change or human action.
00:07:03.196 --> 00:07:07.023
Many of these phenomena do occur regularly, yet the extent to which they are
00:07:07.023 --> 00:07:11.033
becoming disasters for humans is what's now so stark.
00:07:11.462 --> 00:07:16.053
And to be clear, we name a disaster from our perspective, from a human perspective
00:07:16.053 --> 00:07:21.173
as it were, as a natural physical event like an earthquake or wildfire when
00:07:21.173 --> 00:07:25.766
it exposes people to danger, makes housing and built infrastructure vulnerable,
00:07:26.242 --> 00:07:31.292
overly degrades the ecosystem, or where communities have a weak ability to respond.
00:07:31.832 --> 00:07:36.773
Such events may not necessarily be a disaster from Mother Nature's point of
00:07:36.773 --> 00:07:42.600
view, if we can imagine Mother Nature having a view of what best suits her highest interest.
00:07:43.402 --> 00:07:48.186
One of the more notable incidents include a magnitude 7.6 earthquake,
00:07:48.685 --> 00:07:53.190
that struck the northern Molucca Sea off Indonesia on 2nd April,
00:07:53.637 --> 00:07:58.635
killing at least one person, damaging buildings and producing tsunami waves.
00:07:58.977 --> 00:08:06.006
It was a tectonic event arising from movement within an exceptionally active plate boundary region.
00:08:06.528 --> 00:08:13.103
And in that country too, just a week ago, at least 47 people were killed after
00:08:13.103 --> 00:08:17.663
a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Floris Island. We had an intention for that
00:08:17.663 --> 00:08:20.013
in the Facebook group last week.
00:08:21.267 --> 00:08:26.196
Bangladesh has seen monsoon flooding and landslides When in July,
00:08:26.376 --> 00:08:29.911
torrential rain caused flooding across seven districts,
00:08:30.671 --> 00:08:36.952
Reported deaths reached at least 44 And over a quarter of a million homes were stranded,
00:08:37.782 --> 00:08:42.203
We have of course mentioned the wildfires in North America By mid-July,
00:08:42.203 --> 00:08:47.403
wildfires were burning across Europe, Canada and the United States Amid exceptionally
00:08:47.403 --> 00:08:49.601
high northern hemisphere temperatures is.
00:08:50.669 --> 00:08:55.763
In Washington state, fires across more than a quarter million acres prompted
00:08:55.763 --> 00:08:57.931
urgent evacuations earlier this month.
00:08:58.749 --> 00:09:02.093
Europe's summer fires have been especially devastating in Croatia,
00:09:02.413 --> 00:09:07.607
Germany, France and Greece, leading to mass evacuations and injuries.
00:09:08.147 --> 00:09:13.859
Even southern England has seen over 1,000 wildfires being recorded so far this year.
00:09:14.306 --> 00:09:18.913
Of course, some fire and other emergency services who are not historically used
00:09:18.913 --> 00:09:24.283
to combating fires on the scale seen may be inadequately resourced and trained
00:09:24.283 --> 00:09:27.762
to deal with disasters that weren't previously anticipated.
00:09:27.994 --> 00:09:30.273
That's something we were musing on last week, isn't it?
00:09:32.038 --> 00:09:37.223
In East Asia, some areas have seen extreme rainfall, with parts of Chiba near
00:09:37.223 --> 00:09:43.567
Tokyo this month receiving more than 360mm of rain in just 24 hours.
00:09:43.851 --> 00:09:49.110
Inundating roads and railways, leaving travelers stranded, knocking out power,
00:09:49.511 --> 00:09:51.839
and reportedly killing eight people.
00:09:52.453 --> 00:09:57.433
And that 360 millimeters is over 14 inches. Wow. For those of us in the States.
00:09:58.513 --> 00:10:02.153
That is extraordinary, isn't it? Extraordinary. In the U.S.,
00:10:02.433 --> 00:10:05.646
some of the effects of the different disasters are compounding.
00:10:06.064 --> 00:10:09.893
I should mention, actually, that a very similar amount of rainfall in 24 hours
00:10:09.893 --> 00:10:17.553
was received in Caracas in Venezuela, which is just overcoming its recent earthquake.
00:10:17.553 --> 00:10:21.844
Well, not overcoming, but it's only two months since the devastating earthquake.
00:10:22.262 --> 00:10:26.268
That was this week. There was severe rainfall and flooding there as well.
00:10:26.955 --> 00:10:30.792
In the US, some of the effects of the different disasters are compounding.
00:10:31.477 --> 00:10:36.803
In July, a notable convergence of wildfire smoke, New fires and Texas flooding
00:10:36.803 --> 00:10:43.131
came together Although I understand that Texas now needs rain It's suffering drought in many areas.
00:10:44.142 --> 00:10:49.208
Reuters reported that 68 large fires were blazing across 15 U.S.
00:10:49.208 --> 00:10:53.227
States while floodwaters swept through Texas Hill Country.
00:10:54.182 --> 00:10:59.405
Also this month, typhoon Dolphin brought torrential rain, strong winds,
00:10:59.405 --> 00:11:02.106
and flooding to Zhejiang and Shanghai.
00:11:02.640 --> 00:11:09.513
Other reports describe major cyclone-related flooding and large evacuations in China.
00:11:10.282 --> 00:11:13.395
These are just a selection of events happening in recent months.
00:11:13.395 --> 00:11:17.283
They literally are happening all the time at the moment, as we mentioned.
00:11:18.090 --> 00:11:23.693
There have been many more. Yeah. In my state of Illinois, in the United States,
00:11:24.198 --> 00:11:28.915
we have now become the state that has the most tornadoes this year.
00:11:28.915 --> 00:11:32.304
And that's never happened before. We've never been the state.
00:11:32.733 --> 00:11:35.856
Yeah. As you know, as I get on and say, we had another tornado.
00:11:36.761 --> 00:11:43.124
Yeah. So that's really strange. Indiana has had some catastrophic flooding it's never had before.
00:11:43.652 --> 00:11:51.562
So the U.S. is seeing a lot of disasters between flooding and fires. So interesting. Yes.
00:11:52.225 --> 00:11:57.085
So has what's been happening this year been worse than in previous years in
00:11:57.085 --> 00:12:00.695
terms of the number or intensity of such events?
00:12:01.223 --> 00:12:05.935
On this question, it's actually far too early to say, given the time needed
00:12:05.935 --> 00:12:07.742
to collect and analyze data.
00:12:08.412 --> 00:12:12.643
Annual disaster data are usually compiled retrospectively.
00:12:13.050 --> 00:12:18.884
Impacts are revised, and a year-to-date count cannot fairly be compared with complete years.
00:12:19.784 --> 00:12:27.125
EM, DIT, or MDAT, the main international disaster database, covers disasters
00:12:27.125 --> 00:12:33.849
from 1900 onward, but its 2026 work began with a validation of 2025 events.
00:12:34.418 --> 00:12:38.575
Even the reported number of disasters is cautioned against as a measure of the
00:12:38.575 --> 00:12:42.197
total occurrence because it reflects changes in reporting.
00:12:42.793 --> 00:12:47.685
However, there are strong grounds for saying that the background risk for climate-related
00:12:47.685 --> 00:12:50.402
extremes is higher than it was in earlier decades.
00:12:51.151 --> 00:12:59.700
The UN's World Meteorological Organization says that 2015 to 2025 were the 11
00:12:59.700 --> 00:13:05.217
hottest years on record, and 2025 was the second or third hottest year,
00:13:05.757 --> 00:13:10.310
around 1.4 degrees Celsius, which is 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit,
00:13:10.310 --> 00:13:14.261
above the 1850 to 1900 average.
00:13:14.905 --> 00:13:19.200
At the same time, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found that heavy
00:13:19.200 --> 00:13:24.089
precipitation has likely intensified across much of the world's land area,
00:13:24.536 --> 00:13:27.020
with human influence a main contributor.
00:13:27.616 --> 00:13:32.562
Continued warming generally makes such events more frequent and more intense.
00:13:33.096 --> 00:13:37.170
The occurrence of such disasters in some regions that aren't used to seeing
00:13:37.170 --> 00:13:42.749
them with such intensity and frequency is adding to the human challenge of how we respond.
00:13:43.382 --> 00:13:47.040
This became clear to us with the recent wildfires in Europe, even in the UK.
00:13:48.013 --> 00:13:54.120
This is especially the case with wildfires. 2025 saw the largest recorded burned
00:13:54.120 --> 00:13:58.572
area in Europe, about 2.5 million acres,
00:13:59.037 --> 00:14:04.749
following sustained hot, dry conditions that amplified wildfire activity.
00:14:05.399 --> 00:14:09.265
That indicates that the conditions for a fire spreading has been increasing,
00:14:09.637 --> 00:14:14.484
though it doesn't mean that every individual fire was caused by climate change.
00:14:16.104 --> 00:14:22.060
Yeah that's important to keep in mind isn't it yeah there are other other causes
00:14:22.060 --> 00:14:27.180
as we mentioned last time as well of course including human intervention right.
00:14:28.659 --> 00:14:33.452
Higher levels of extreme rainfall are also being seen, although the earthquakes
00:14:33.452 --> 00:14:37.836
being reported this year have largely occurred in tectonically active regions,
00:14:38.318 --> 00:14:41.459
where significant seismicity is normal.
00:14:41.946 --> 00:14:45.300
In other words, these aren't being affected by human behavior.
00:14:45.765 --> 00:14:50.235
These include a magnitude 7.6 event near Tonga in the Pacific Ring of Fire,
00:14:50.542 --> 00:14:56.127
another magnitude 7.6 quake in the northern Malacca Sea of Indonesia we mentioned earlier,
00:14:56.713 --> 00:15:03.842
which also occurred in a very active tectonic setting, and quakes in Afghanistan and Papua New Guinea.
00:15:04.201 --> 00:15:08.108
They were likewise in regions long recognized for substantial earthquake risk.
00:15:08.944 --> 00:15:14.941
Birthquakes arise mainly from stress and rupture along forts as tectonic plates move.
00:15:15.388 --> 00:15:20.262
There can be limited local interactions, such as glacier retreat,
00:15:20.262 --> 00:15:26.522
reservoir loading, geothermal activity or fluid injection, affecting stresses
00:15:26.522 --> 00:15:29.825
on forts that can be related to climate change.
00:15:30.237 --> 00:15:33.517
But these aren't the main drivers for most quakes.
00:15:34.027 --> 00:15:39.426
Belgium experienced what was described as its largest wildfire on record back in August.
00:15:39.972 --> 00:15:44.092
This is significant because Belgium isn't normally associated with the kind
00:15:44.092 --> 00:15:50.048
of large, fast-moving fire emergencies familiar to Mediterranean Europe.
00:15:51.006 --> 00:15:56.045
More broadly, the EU's fire danger outlook in mid-August placed very extreme
00:15:56.045 --> 00:16:00.575
conditions not only in the Balkans and Mediterranean, but from Germany and the
00:16:00.575 --> 00:16:03.185
Alpine region through to Poland, as well as,
00:16:03.805 --> 00:16:07.864
pockets of southern England, Ireland, northern France, and southern Sweden.
00:16:08.415 --> 00:16:13.095
These are places where destructive wildfire conditions have historically been
00:16:13.095 --> 00:16:15.282
less regular than in southern Europe.
00:16:15.969 --> 00:16:18.715
Wildfire is not unknown in some of these areas. For example,
00:16:18.715 --> 00:16:24.295
in the Laune and Gironde regions of southwest France, but the scale and conditions
00:16:24.295 --> 00:16:27.550
of 2026 have been unusually serious.
00:16:28.189 --> 00:16:33.326
The recent widely reported fire near Bordeaux burned around 100,000 acres,
00:16:33.779 --> 00:16:39.120
the second largest area destroyed by a single French wildfire since the Second World War,
00:16:40.031 --> 00:16:43.901
while around 220,000 residents and tourists were evacuated.
00:16:44.382 --> 00:16:48.985
The fire and weather itself was estimated to be unusual in southwest France,
00:16:48.985 --> 00:16:50.327
even in the current climate.
00:16:50.884 --> 00:16:56.497
Conditions of comparable seven-day severity occur roughly once every 20 to 22 years.
00:16:57.601 --> 00:17:02.134
The same analysis estimates that anthropogenic warming increased the intensity
00:17:02.134 --> 00:17:08.394
of such conditions by about 46% and made them at least twice as likely as in
00:17:08.394 --> 00:17:10.012
a pre-industrial climate.
00:17:10.512 --> 00:17:16.601
In other words, the risk of fire starting and spreading is now higher because of the climate.
00:17:17.275 --> 00:17:22.414
Records for burn were also set in central Spain, with the Avila-Madrid-Toledo
00:17:22.414 --> 00:17:29.361
blaze being described as the largest and most destructive fire in the country's history. Wow.
00:17:31.003 --> 00:17:35.171
Wow. These records are just astonishing, aren't they? Yes.
00:17:35.792 --> 00:17:40.969
Record rainfall is also being recorded in areas that are not used to extremes.
00:17:41.631 --> 00:17:45.604
So, as we mentioned, the mid-August flooding in Chiba Prefecture near Tokyo
00:17:45.604 --> 00:17:52.910
was a clear example of unusual intensity in what is a densely populated infrastructure-heavy region.
00:17:53.647 --> 00:17:59.474
As we said, more than 14 inches fell in just 24 hours, significantly exceeding
00:17:59.474 --> 00:18:04.160
Chiba's previous record of 309 millimeters. Don't know what the inches are there.
00:18:04.993 --> 00:18:10.434
That was within a single day. The intense rainfall left 20,000 homes without
00:18:10.434 --> 00:18:18.460
power and about 7,000 travelers stranded at nearby Narita, home to Tokyo's main airport.
00:18:19.243 --> 00:18:25.044
Overall, we might say that so far this year, some regions have experienced genuinely
00:18:25.044 --> 00:18:29.628
record-breaking or unusually severe fire and rainfall events.
00:18:30.295 --> 00:18:33.471
The evidence strongly points to shifting climate risk conditions,
00:18:34.127 --> 00:18:39.244
as familiar hazards are increasingly occurring in unfamiliar seasons at unusual
00:18:39.244 --> 00:18:47.325
intensity or in places whose infrastructure, Ecosystems and public expectations Were not built for them.
00:18:48.134 --> 00:18:52.198
And that's the problem, right? They're happening where people just aren't prepared.
00:18:52.644 --> 00:18:55.452
No. Well, not that they're great when you are prepared, but,
00:18:55.452 --> 00:18:56.917
you know, it just compounds it.
00:18:57.566 --> 00:19:02.332
Can we then say whether this intensity and frequency of disasters has anything
00:19:02.332 --> 00:19:06.779
to do with Gaia theory or even with our planet urging us to wake up?
00:19:07.225 --> 00:19:12.692
Some spiritual, ecological, and popular commentators are interpreting disasters
00:19:12.692 --> 00:19:16.664
as resulting from Gaia, our Mother Earth, waking humanity up,
00:19:16.960 --> 00:19:21.203
correcting human excess, or communicating planetary limits.
00:19:21.766 --> 00:19:26.072
But these are faith-based interpretations, not based on scientific findings
00:19:26.072 --> 00:19:27.636
about our planet's intention.
00:19:28.442 --> 00:19:32.572
We need to remind ourselves that Gaia theory doesn't describe the Earth as being
00:19:32.572 --> 00:19:37.868
a conscious agent with intentions, judgments, or a plan to punish humanity.
00:19:38.356 --> 00:19:41.578
Our planet may be responding to being pushed beyond its limits,
00:19:42.048 --> 00:19:46.483
or to extremes that might not have been witnessed without human intervention.
00:19:46.936 --> 00:19:52.566
Science can show that human activity is destabilizing conditions through warming,
00:19:52.967 --> 00:19:58.352
land use change, and ecological damage, and that the consequences return through
00:19:58.352 --> 00:20:01.611
the same interconnected earth system on which we depend.
00:20:02.005 --> 00:20:05.622
Yet this isn't quite the same as saying that the earth is volitionally calling
00:20:05.622 --> 00:20:08.971
us to wake up or even seeking to punish us.
00:20:09.320 --> 00:20:11.276
Earth has always been dynamic.
00:20:11.903 --> 00:20:17.371
Tectonic plates move, volcanoes erupt, rivers flood, droughts recur,
00:20:17.656 --> 00:20:20.692
lightning ignites fires, oceans,
00:20:20.692 --> 00:20:24.738
and atmospheres shift through phenomena such as El Nino and La Nina,
00:20:25.295 --> 00:20:29.842
yet natural doesn't mean that there's no significance to human actions in how
00:20:29.842 --> 00:20:32.956
they interact with or impact these natural processes.
00:20:33.718 --> 00:20:38.369
Specifically, heavier rainfall and surface water flooding are becoming more
00:20:38.369 --> 00:20:42.483
likely in many regions as a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture.
00:20:43.046 --> 00:20:48.967
Hotter, drier, and windier conditions can lengthen fire seasons and raise fire weather risk.
00:20:49.492 --> 00:20:53.229
And ocean warming and rising sea levels can intensify rainfall,
00:20:53.229 --> 00:20:55.389
storm surge, and coastal impacts,
00:20:55.389 --> 00:20:59.784
even where changes in storm numbers are uncertain or region-specific.
00:21:00.266 --> 00:21:07.129
Urban paving, wetland loss, poor drainage, and development in fire-prone areas
00:21:07.129 --> 00:21:09.652
may all add to potential impacts.
00:21:10.221 --> 00:21:14.599
Climate change has changed the probability, intensity, duration,
00:21:14.599 --> 00:21:16.584
and impact of many extremes.
00:21:17.013 --> 00:21:21.989
We may be a technologically powerful species, but we cannot continue to behave
00:21:21.989 --> 00:21:25.123
as though we are separate from the systems that provide us with air,
00:21:25.663 --> 00:21:29.498
water, soil, food, and climatic stability.
00:21:30.096 --> 00:21:35.469
The way we act may risk future flooding, fires, and typhoons on a scale and
00:21:35.469 --> 00:21:37.794
in regions that are truly unprecedented.
00:21:38.450 --> 00:21:44.371
Many of us know this, yet still too many of our leaders remain unready to take serious action.
00:21:44.800 --> 00:21:49.653
Those of us who know that this is necessary must remain strong in our advocacy.
00:21:50.473 --> 00:21:53.753
In this, we might take steps to practice building resilience,
00:21:54.124 --> 00:21:58.523
such as Mother Nature shows resilience in powerfully responding to the ever-changing
00:21:58.523 --> 00:22:00.150
conditions that she faces.
00:22:00.730 --> 00:22:04.703
Regular listeners will know that resilience is the theme for this quarter's
00:22:04.703 --> 00:22:05.995
Global Healing Response.
00:22:06.582 --> 00:22:10.713
We offered some practical thoughts on how you might build resilience in an earlier
00:22:10.713 --> 00:22:13.884
episode, the link for which we'll put in the show notes.
00:22:14.476 --> 00:22:18.103
You may like to know that there's also a whole set of resources supporting this
00:22:18.103 --> 00:22:20.189
theme on the Global Healing Response website.
00:22:20.322 --> 00:22:23.010
Again, we'll put the link for that in the show notes.
00:22:23.822 --> 00:22:27.323
So where might we hone in with our intention and prayers? As always,
00:22:27.323 --> 00:22:31.083
this is the point you may wish to bookmark, to come back to you as we invite
00:22:31.083 --> 00:22:33.393
you to join us in sending intention.
00:22:33.904 --> 00:22:35.593
We'll put a bookmark in the show notes.
00:22:36.104 --> 00:22:42.253
So just take a moment to allow yourself to become present, setting aside attention
00:22:42.253 --> 00:22:48.471
from the external world for a moment or what's going on around you in your immediate environment.
00:22:49.724 --> 00:22:55.016
Allowing yourself to connect with your higher self and in your own way,
00:22:55.732 --> 00:22:58.465
coming to a point of holding intention.
00:22:58.465 --> 00:23:02.735
We'll mention, as always, a number of suggested intentions, but you may wish
00:23:02.735 --> 00:23:06.611
to pause between each in turn to give proper attention to each.
00:23:07.574 --> 00:23:11.057
We ask that global leaders, heads of multinational companies,
00:23:11.412 --> 00:23:18.111
and all who have influence may be moved by the scale and intensity of natural disasters this year
00:23:18.541 --> 00:23:24.035
to recognize the impacts their policies, or lack of them, may have on increasing
00:23:24.035 --> 00:23:27.542
the risk of flooding, fire, and typhoons occurring.
00:23:28.598 --> 00:23:34.045
We will that fire and emergency crews in all temperate as well as already fire-prone
00:23:34.045 --> 00:23:39.325
regions will be alert to the possibility that large-scale wildfires may occur in their areas,
00:23:39.931 --> 00:23:45.330
and be alerted to scale up their readiness to combat such disasters if this is required.
00:23:46.412 --> 00:23:51.231
We ask for continued innovation in disaster forecasting and combat approaches,
00:23:51.725 --> 00:23:56.355
including in both technological inventions and approaches to managing disaster
00:23:56.355 --> 00:23:58.662
defense and response actions.
00:23:59.751 --> 00:24:04.585
We pray that there will be widespread international cooperation and intelligence
00:24:04.585 --> 00:24:09.305
sharing among emergency services, including a readiness to support cross-border
00:24:09.305 --> 00:24:12.080
responses to major emergencies when they occur.
00:24:12.718 --> 00:24:16.945
And for an acknowledgment among all governments that the actions of many nations
00:24:16.945 --> 00:24:21.695
contribute to global warming, even if the consequences may be mainly felt by
00:24:21.695 --> 00:24:24.752
some whose contributions to this are less than others.
00:24:25.833 --> 00:24:30.697
We will for wisdom for those involved in forest management, water management,
00:24:31.086 --> 00:24:35.829
and all industries that are directly impacted by fire and excessive rainfall,
00:24:36.392 --> 00:24:41.054
to know how most effectively to respond to the disasters that occur.
00:24:42.138 --> 00:24:47.151
And this week, as we reflect on the large number of intense natural disasters
00:24:47.151 --> 00:24:50.973
this year, we suggest holding as our main intention.
00:24:51.867 --> 00:24:56.761
We will that the intensity and frequency of natural disasters this year will
00:24:56.761 --> 00:25:01.681
motivate the governments of all nations to redouble efforts to act decisively
00:25:02.058 --> 00:25:07.291
with measures to reduce or contain global warming, and that those who continue
00:25:07.291 --> 00:25:12.288
to advocate for such actions among them will remain resilient in their advocacy.
00:25:13.094 --> 00:25:15.555
Please join us in holding this intention.
00:25:17.221 --> 00:25:21.971
Yeah, I was just thinking about some news footage I saw the other day of wildfires
00:25:21.971 --> 00:25:25.561
in Wales here as well. It was another area which has been very,
00:25:25.561 --> 00:25:28.710
very badly affected. We've only mentioned a few, really.
00:25:28.843 --> 00:25:31.271
Right. There was so much more. Yeah.
00:25:31.631 --> 00:25:34.294
Sweden, my goodness, you know, that far north.
00:25:35.008 --> 00:25:39.641
So, that about wraps it up for this episode. remember you can connect with us
00:25:39.641 --> 00:25:44.231
in the Facebook group and for live intention holding in my daily insight timer
00:25:44.231 --> 00:25:48.289
offerings and with Ellen in the Labyrinth Activist Network's Zoom calls.
00:25:48.876 --> 00:25:51.871
Details of how to hook up with these are in our show notes.
00:25:52.214 --> 00:25:57.385
Look out too for our next special topic episode, which we'll be releasing in the next few days.
