00:00:32.939 --> 00:00:35.488
Hello and welcome back to the podcast.
00:00:35.518 --> 00:00:37.558
Thank you for being here with me.
00:00:38.219 --> 00:00:45.478
I appreciate that you are willing to take time to listen and learn about.
00:00:46.514 --> 00:00:48.134
Different ways to be a parent.
00:00:48.613 --> 00:01:00.853
Um, recently, and this is actually what we're going to be talking about today, is the myth of good parenting, but recently someone was like, uh, what makes someone a good parent?
00:01:01.454 --> 00:01:03.643
And if you've been listening to me for a while.
00:01:03.863 --> 00:01:09.263
You know that I would rather steer clear from like the labels of good and bad parenting.
00:01:10.284 --> 00:01:12.894
So I wanna be clear about that.
00:01:13.493 --> 00:01:22.853
But one of the things I wanna tell you, like if you are actively trying to grow and improve as a parent, that.
00:01:23.593 --> 00:01:37.218
Means something about you and your parenting, and I would say that you are in the minority in that area because most people don't take the time to intentionally learn and grow.
00:01:38.233 --> 00:01:39.043
And develop.
00:01:39.103 --> 00:01:41.504
So I want to thank you for being here.
00:01:41.983 --> 00:01:57.194
I know that there are millions and millions of other podcasts that you could be listening to, and whether you're out on a walk, you're out with your spouse or your dog, thank you for taking me along for the ride.
00:01:57.343 --> 00:02:00.194
I really enjoy this time that we get to spend together.
00:02:00.914 --> 00:02:05.144
So, like I said earlier, we are going to talk about the myth.
00:02:05.963 --> 00:02:07.433
Good parenting.
00:02:08.123 --> 00:02:15.144
And I want to start with a question like, have you ever wondered if you are a good parent?
00:02:15.774 --> 00:02:24.024
I know a lot of the parents that I work with have wondered that exact thing, like, man, am I a good parent?
00:02:24.024 --> 00:02:29.304
Because I kind of feel like I'm the worst parent ever, and I know how that feels.
00:02:29.334 --> 00:02:30.114
I've been there.
00:02:32.503 --> 00:02:48.614
You might be worried that man, you are a bad parent, especially in today's world with how vocal people are and how judgmental people are and how vocal they are about their judgments, which by the way, is a really bad combination.
00:02:49.033 --> 00:02:58.693
We need to get back to, I think it was Thumpers mom from like Bambi, where she's like, Hey, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
00:02:59.503 --> 00:03:00.044
So.
00:03:00.278 --> 00:03:05.318
We live in this world where there is this myth.
00:03:06.299 --> 00:03:17.068
Good parenting versus bad parenting, and I don't want to throw anyone under the bus because that would be actually going against what I'm teaching you right now.
00:03:17.758 --> 00:03:25.378
I don't wanna say, oh man, this other parenting life coach, they are a bad parenting life coach because they say this.
00:03:25.679 --> 00:03:30.209
No, they, they're entitled to their opinion and their teachings.
00:03:30.868 --> 00:03:32.068
I just want to.
00:03:32.788 --> 00:03:40.288
Share with you some of the flaws that I see in this movement surrounding good parenting.
00:03:41.008 --> 00:03:46.468
And the reason I decided to do this, I've been seeing posts lately.
00:03:46.498 --> 00:03:49.528
There's a life coach for parents.
00:03:50.248 --> 00:03:53.549
I, I think it might be parents of teens, maybe it's just parents.
00:03:53.549 --> 00:03:54.028
I don't know.
00:03:55.663 --> 00:03:57.283
She's got more followers than me.
00:03:57.283 --> 00:03:58.963
So I was like, man, I'm gonna go check her out.
00:03:58.963 --> 00:04:00.734
Like maybe I'll really like her stuff.
00:04:01.424 --> 00:04:07.334
And I just saw a series of posts that was like, good parents.
00:04:07.394 --> 00:04:10.454
And then you kinda have to swipe to the next page.
00:04:10.454 --> 00:04:12.973
And it's like, good parents do swipe.
00:04:13.033 --> 00:04:16.363
They do this, swipe, they also do this, swipe.
00:04:16.363 --> 00:04:17.113
They do this.
00:04:18.463 --> 00:04:25.363
And it's very common in today's world that we talk about good parenting.
00:04:26.173 --> 00:04:27.644
Versus bad parenting.
00:04:28.244 --> 00:04:44.593
And so the reason I want to address this today, I believe that good parenting is a myth and it's actually something, it's a belief that when you buy into it, it can be weaponized against you.
00:04:44.939 --> 00:04:46.199
And against other people.
00:04:46.769 --> 00:04:48.389
So let's just take a minute.
00:04:48.389 --> 00:04:54.298
Let's expose some of the problems with this good parenting myth.
00:04:55.048 --> 00:04:56.884
So like I said, there's this, it's.
00:04:57.764 --> 00:05:04.483
Really common if you've fallen into the good parenting belief versus the bad parents.
00:05:04.694 --> 00:05:06.853
Like it makes sense.
00:05:06.884 --> 00:05:21.194
We talk about it this way on social media, it's part of our reality, and there's this belief that man, there's good parents and there's bad parents, and I need to be on the good side now.
00:05:21.838 --> 00:05:26.728
Part of the problem with this is that this can sound super appealing.
00:05:27.269 --> 00:05:29.608
I everyone wants to be good.
00:05:29.608 --> 00:05:36.988
Like we want to be the good guys, and it gives you a way to measure yourself against the others.
00:05:37.139 --> 00:05:41.399
Like, well, at least I'm not as bad as X, Y, and Z.
00:05:42.538 --> 00:05:43.528
It sounds good.
00:05:43.528 --> 00:05:44.728
It sounds appealing.
00:05:44.788 --> 00:05:49.348
It might even feel good in the moment because you can look at someone who's like.
00:05:50.024 --> 00:05:54.764
Yelling at their kids and cussing'em out and you're like, man, at least I'm a better parent than that.
00:05:54.764 --> 00:06:01.394
And it might feel good in the moment, but there are some hidden problems.
00:06:02.084 --> 00:06:09.584
First, if you believe in good parenting, you also have to believe in bad parenting.
00:06:10.514 --> 00:06:12.764
So just my.
00:06:13.408 --> 00:06:20.338
Believing that man, there are some good parents and I'm one of'em, and there are some bad parents and I am not one of them.
00:06:20.879 --> 00:06:29.579
It pulls you into the comparison trap because to have a good, we have to have a bad to compare it to.
00:06:30.269 --> 00:06:40.738
Now the problem is who gets to decide what good parenting is versus bad parenting Oftentimes.
00:06:41.129 --> 00:06:54.718
We let others decide what good parenting looks like in our lives, and then we parent at the mercy to what we think other people may or may not be thinking about us.
00:06:55.139 --> 00:07:07.889
Okay, so the first hidden problem is this comparison trap and the factor of who really gets to decide what good parenting is and good parenting isn't.
00:07:09.358 --> 00:07:15.959
The second problem when you focus on good parenting versus bad parenting, typically it.
00:07:17.713 --> 00:07:21.644
Causes you to focus on things outside of your control.
00:07:22.543 --> 00:07:29.803
I see so many people that think they're good parents because their teenagers are doing what they want them to.
00:07:30.254 --> 00:07:44.084
Like, man, I'm, I'm a good parent because my teens have good grades, or they behave well in school, or they're a captain on the football team, but you're focusing on something outside of your control.
00:07:44.803 --> 00:07:46.139
teen could decide, you know what?
00:07:46.139 --> 00:07:47.218
Grades are stupid.
00:07:47.309 --> 00:07:48.569
High school's a waste of time.
00:07:48.718 --> 00:07:49.139
You know what?
00:07:49.139 --> 00:07:50.338
Football hurts.
00:07:50.338 --> 00:07:51.809
I don't wanna play football anymore.
00:07:52.709 --> 00:07:53.519
Problem is.
00:07:54.418 --> 00:08:14.309
A lot of people base whether or not they consider themselves to be a good parent or whether or not they think other people think that they're good parents based on things outside of their control, like their teen's behavior or the thoughts and the responses from other people.
00:08:14.999 --> 00:08:18.778
I know a lot of parents that are doing the best that they can.
00:08:18.778 --> 00:08:23.278
They're just fine, and for whatever reason, their teens are really struggling with.
00:08:23.759 --> 00:08:30.658
Grades, drugs, a boyfriend or a girlfriend that no one approves of.
00:08:32.339 --> 00:08:53.308
The second trap is that when you buy into the myth of good parenting, you tend to focus on things outside of your control, and that can be devastating to your identity when you think you're a really good parent and then your teenager goes and does something.
00:08:54.058 --> 00:08:56.668
That is completely out of alignment with your values.
00:08:57.629 --> 00:09:11.458
The other hidden problem when it comes to good parenting, I alluded to it earlier, it's this idea of good versus bad and it creates division.
00:09:12.178 --> 00:09:17.999
We can see this right now in religion, in politics, in.
00:09:18.854 --> 00:09:21.313
Sports, like all over the place.
00:09:21.313 --> 00:09:26.683
There is so much division, like in college football.
00:09:27.104 --> 00:09:29.474
I'm starting to see this so clearly.
00:09:29.474 --> 00:09:34.663
Like we think, oh well my team and my team's fans are the good guys.
00:09:35.114 --> 00:09:39.764
The other team, they're the bad guys, as are their fans.
00:09:40.244 --> 00:09:42.224
It creates division.
00:09:42.913 --> 00:09:43.933
I'm a good parent.
00:09:44.354 --> 00:09:45.644
They're a bad parent.
00:09:46.303 --> 00:09:46.724
It's.
00:09:48.058 --> 00:09:48.928
Divisive.
00:09:49.619 --> 00:09:56.158
And one of the books that I recommend the most often is Leadership and Self-Deception.
00:09:56.668 --> 00:09:57.538
I love that book.
00:09:57.568 --> 00:10:00.269
In fact, it's probably time that I re-listen to it.
00:10:00.928 --> 00:10:12.688
But the book has this concept of in the box thinking where when you're in the box to someone else, you don't see them as like you're equal.
00:10:12.688 --> 00:10:15.629
You don't see them as human beings with like.
00:10:16.663 --> 00:10:20.474
Similar wants and desires and needs to your own.
00:10:20.833 --> 00:10:31.634
You start to see them as like an object that is in the way of you getting what you want or something that is in competition with you for what you want.
00:10:32.683 --> 00:10:39.464
When you are in the box, you are going to have more negative thoughts.
00:10:40.004 --> 00:10:46.453
Towards the other person, and your thoughts will be self inflated based on your comparison.
00:10:46.994 --> 00:10:48.703
This creates division.
00:10:49.214 --> 00:10:55.124
You can be in the box towards your teen, you can be in the box towards your spouse, towards your mother-in-law, whatever.
00:10:56.053 --> 00:10:58.244
But it creates division.
00:10:58.724 --> 00:11:04.724
And when you start buying into the good parenting philosophy or the good parenting myth.
00:11:06.448 --> 00:11:15.599
You are buying into a concept that creates division and you are in self-deception.
00:11:16.019 --> 00:11:21.839
So I like, I want to be clear, I'm not shaming this other coach like.
00:11:22.469 --> 00:11:24.328
She can teach this way, it's fine.
00:11:24.479 --> 00:11:27.869
I am fine with other coaches having different philosophies.
00:11:28.798 --> 00:11:46.918
I just want to share with you my take, because one of the biggest struggles that I see parents getting stuck in is this idea that there's good parenting and there's bad parenting, and all the other parents around them are saying that good parents should do X, Y, and z.
00:11:47.568 --> 00:11:55.428
But for whatever reason, they don't feel like that is in alignment with who they are, and then they label themselves bad parents.
00:11:56.239 --> 00:12:11.688
So when we can see that the good versus bad parenting scale keeps you stuck and it disempowers you, and it makes you more judgmental than you want to be when you can see them, man.
00:12:12.703 --> 00:12:14.653
This good versus bad parenting.
00:12:14.774 --> 00:12:22.724
It distracts me from what really matters, which is my own identity, my own intentions, who I want to be.
00:12:23.803 --> 00:12:34.124
And when you can start seeing that distraction in your life, you can see that, oh dang, I was trying to be a good parent based on what my parents think is a good parent.
00:12:34.573 --> 00:12:39.009
But I was parenting out of integrity with who I want to be.
00:12:40.333 --> 00:12:58.724
When you can start to see that in your life, it will empower you to start being the parent of your dreams, not because it's good and you don't want to be bad, but because the good and the bad are irrelevant, and you're just like, no, this is who I want to be.
00:12:59.144 --> 00:13:01.274
This is what I feel the most powerful.
00:13:01.484 --> 00:13:07.484
This is when I feel the most happy, the most at peace and.
00:13:08.068 --> 00:13:22.168
When you're stuck in the good versus bad, like it makes your parenting about performance for external approval rather than being authentic and true to who you are.
00:13:23.129 --> 00:13:33.448
So we can see how thinking that you're a good parent or that there's bad parents out there can be limiting.
00:13:34.349 --> 00:13:35.938
Let's reverse that.
00:13:36.089 --> 00:13:39.239
Let's identify the alternative.
00:13:40.109 --> 00:13:43.678
'cause the truth is, parenting isn't about being good or about being bad.
00:13:43.678 --> 00:13:46.109
It's about being intentional.
00:13:46.469 --> 00:13:55.293
It's about being the parent of your dreams and living your values in a way that helps you show up as that parent that you want to be.
00:13:56.609 --> 00:13:59.908
And you can ask yourself like what matters most to you?
00:14:00.418 --> 00:14:02.249
For me, it's family time.
00:14:02.308 --> 00:14:10.469
For me, it's having fun For me, it's having the freedom to just drop everything and go do something together.
00:14:11.999 --> 00:14:17.818
For me, having a 10 word vision statement is very, very helpful.
00:14:18.119 --> 00:14:20.578
I've talked about this in the podcast a lot of times.
00:14:20.653 --> 00:14:25.303
I don't know if you all know this, but my podcast is searchable.
00:14:25.724 --> 00:14:32.864
Like you could simply go to ben pugh coaching.com/podcast and there is a little, uh.
00:14:33.538 --> 00:14:37.229
Magnifying glass icon, which is funny.
00:14:37.229 --> 00:14:40.469
I asked a kid the other day if he knew what that was.
00:14:40.469 --> 00:14:46.589
He is like, oh, I don't know what it's called, but I know like old detectives used to use it and I'm like, Hmm.
00:14:46.649 --> 00:14:50.698
I remember old people carrying one around so they could read books, but whatever.
00:14:51.269 --> 00:14:53.999
Anyways, my podcast is totally searchable.
00:14:54.688 --> 00:15:00.719
If you don't know how to do a 10 word vision statement, just go to my podcast.
00:15:01.948 --> 00:15:09.688
Search 10 word vision statement, and it'll come up with a ton of times when I actually taught that.
00:15:10.469 --> 00:15:17.788
And let's see, there's episode 2 45, uh, 2 44, 1 45.
00:15:17.788 --> 00:15:25.349
Like it just gives you a ton of episodes rather than focusing on good or bad parenting.
00:15:26.308 --> 00:15:34.558
Take some time to gain some clarity around who you want to be as a parent.
00:15:35.504 --> 00:15:44.833
Gain, take some time to not only gain that clarity, but define for yourself, this is who I want to be.
00:15:45.254 --> 00:15:46.693
And we're not defining like men.
00:15:46.693 --> 00:15:55.634
This is good parenting and this is bad parenting because I'm gonna tell you, every parent is going to do stuff that is on a good parenting list somewhere.
00:15:55.634 --> 00:16:02.864
It is like Santa Claus up there like, oh, I got my good parenting list and my naughty parenting list, and I'm gonna check it twice.
00:16:03.563 --> 00:16:18.653
There's no such thing, and I guarantee you some of the things that you're doing are on someone's, maybe even your own subconscious good parenting list, and some of the things that you do are on some mythical, bad parenting list.
00:16:18.894 --> 00:16:19.614
Who cares?
00:16:20.364 --> 00:16:22.778
Get really good at knowing who you want to be.
00:16:23.423 --> 00:16:28.553
And then rather than thinking in terms of, oh, well, do other people think this is good or bad?
00:16:28.913 --> 00:16:30.234
You're just simply thinking.
00:16:31.004 --> 00:16:35.714
Is my current behavior in alignment with who I want to be or not?
00:16:37.274 --> 00:16:41.083
You shift your focus from all these things outside of your control.
00:16:41.083 --> 00:16:43.063
Like does my teen think I'm a good parent?
00:16:43.063 --> 00:16:44.683
Do my neighbors think I'm a good parent?
00:16:44.683 --> 00:16:47.624
Do my church leaders to my parents, do my in-laws.
00:16:48.014 --> 00:16:55.573
You shift your focus from all of these things that are outside of your control and you bring it back into the things that you can control.
00:16:56.264 --> 00:16:59.594
You know, I can control the thoughts that I let.
00:17:00.028 --> 00:17:00.989
Stay in my mind.
00:17:01.889 --> 00:17:05.249
I can control my emotional state.
00:17:05.818 --> 00:17:07.919
I can control my behavior.
00:17:09.179 --> 00:17:19.588
You focus on the things that you can control, your attitude, your presence, your consistency, your curiosity, your love, all of that, and you start building connection.
00:17:20.999 --> 00:17:37.318
Instead of chasing approval, you start connecting with your teen as the parent of your dreams, which makes it easier to connect with your teen than trying to connect with your teen as like the good or the perfect parent.
00:17:38.189 --> 00:17:39.568
It's a reframe.
00:17:39.989 --> 00:17:42.028
It is empowering.
00:17:43.078 --> 00:17:47.578
So let's talk about some practical steps that you can do.
00:17:49.499 --> 00:18:01.648
I want to invite you to write down your 10 word vision statement, and you could even write down this empowering thought like parenting isn't about being good or bad.
00:18:02.159 --> 00:18:03.808
It's about being me.
00:18:04.558 --> 00:18:05.729
It's about parenting.
00:18:06.388 --> 00:18:11.429
Alignment with my vision, it's about being the parent of my dreams.
00:18:12.088 --> 00:18:17.338
And if you'll take the time, like my 10 word vision statement is probably time that I adjust this.
00:18:17.969 --> 00:18:27.959
I keep it close so I can read it all the time, but it says, parenting with love, confidence and curiosity is easy and fun.
00:18:28.679 --> 00:18:32.308
I'm not worried about what good parenting is versus bad parenting.
00:18:32.638 --> 00:18:35.219
I'm worried about, man, am I parenting with love.
00:18:35.314 --> 00:18:36.753
Because that's who I want to be.
00:18:37.263 --> 00:18:41.763
Am I parenting with confidence because that's the type of parent I wanna be?
00:18:42.364 --> 00:18:44.493
Am I parenting with curiosity?
00:18:45.183 --> 00:18:54.888
And this vision, rather than having me focused on what others may think is good or bad, it has me focused on who I want to be.
00:18:56.128 --> 00:19:13.229
So I want to encourage you, catch yourself in moments when you start thinking about good versus bad parenting and you're letting yourself slide into these traps of like being judgmental in the comparison trap.
00:19:13.709 --> 00:19:20.729
Or you catch yourself focusing on things that you can't control or you feel divided.
00:19:22.108 --> 00:19:23.969
Holier than the bad parents.
00:19:24.328 --> 00:19:37.318
I want you to take notice of those moments so that you can gently shift yourself back to your vision, to your values, so that you can commit to being the parent of your dreams.
00:19:38.098 --> 00:19:39.584
So I want to close.
00:19:41.233 --> 00:19:43.064
Before I do that, I just wanna thank you.
00:19:43.183 --> 00:19:45.763
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being here.
00:19:45.943 --> 00:19:46.933
I love that you're here.
00:19:47.594 --> 00:19:51.763
If you've enjoyed this podcast or any other podcast, share it with a friend.
00:19:52.394 --> 00:19:56.503
Leave me a review on iTunes or wherever you listen to podcasts.
00:19:56.624 --> 00:19:57.554
That really helps.
00:19:58.544 --> 00:20:02.203
But as we close, I want to just give you some reassurance.
00:20:02.773 --> 00:20:06.884
You don't have to prove that you are a good parent to anyone.
00:20:09.493 --> 00:20:11.294
Who cares what other people think.
00:20:12.314 --> 00:20:23.983
Be the best parent that you can be, and I promise you, connection is more powerful than comparison and authenticity.
00:20:24.403 --> 00:20:30.314
Being in alignment with who you are as a parent is greater than approval.
00:20:31.153 --> 00:20:33.193
Stop trying to parent for approval.
00:20:33.193 --> 00:20:35.564
This isn't a popularity contest.
00:20:35.923 --> 00:20:39.314
Start parenting for authenticity.
00:20:39.673 --> 00:20:44.834
How can I parent in alignment with the parent of my dreams?
00:20:44.894 --> 00:20:47.953
How can I be that version of me?
00:20:50.108 --> 00:20:51.269
I want to invite you again.
00:20:52.663 --> 00:20:56.354
If you've enjoyed this podcast, share it with your friends.
00:20:56.413 --> 00:21:15.193
That helps me reach more parents, and as always, you can go take the free parent trap quiz where I identify three parent traps that are really easy to get caught in, and then I'll send you the solution for how to get out of your unique, specific parent trap.
00:21:15.884 --> 00:21:18.703
With that, I will see you guys next week.
