our friends. We experience financial reversals. Persecution comes to us because of the gospel in various forms.

Even our closest family relationships where we wanted to have the closest relationships possible are not

what we hoped they would be. We're a disappointment often to ourselves and often to others. We're embarrassed

sometimes by the things that are true of us. And we suffer the slander of others who speak things that

are not true. And all of that just to underscore this teaching that we find throughout the scripture that

that how we face suffering is very important. We could put it this way there are no neutral sufferers.

experience. And my purpose this morning is to focus us in developing a grid for our suffering that is

richly biblical and avoids the traps that we can so easily fall into in the midst of suffering.

Because our interpretive grid tells us how to interact with and interpret everything that we

experience. That's why I say there are no neutral sufferers. We are always active in our suffering.

We are responding to it in some form or manner. So every Christian will find a way of interpreting

A number of years ago, I came under intense criticism on the internet. And of course, in the internet era,

criticism is not local, it's global. And so it's not limited just to a small group of people with whom

one may have a relationship. But it really goes far beyond that. And the criticism is not just as one

would expect from criticism from unbelievers, but even from Christians that were interpretive and

unkind attacks. From believers who didn't know all the necessary facts, who didn't even have a full set of

information that would enable them to critique what I had said or done.

And there was a certain level of mockery and hostility and vicious words and idle conjecture and scathing
