WEBVTT
00:00:01.439 --> 00:00:09.119
Welcome to Global Edge Talk, where we connect you with people and ideas shaping the future of global business and innovation.
00:00:09.119 --> 00:00:16.800
It's an industry being built by people, by people like today's guests.
00:00:16.800 --> 00:00:22.160
We got down with Object Recording at the APS Global Physics Summit 2026.
00:00:22.160 --> 00:00:31.760
Recorded in collaboration with Business Finland to talk about what it really takes to turn cutting-edge physics into scalable products and why Finland is needing to charge.
00:00:31.760 --> 00:00:36.159
From hardware and cryogenics to talent, culture, and the future of automation.
00:00:36.159 --> 00:00:37.439
This one's packed.
00:00:37.439 --> 00:00:38.799
Let's get into it.
00:00:40.479 --> 00:00:41.520
Hello, hello.
00:00:41.520 --> 00:00:46.799
We are at the Work in Finland booth at the Career Fair at the APS Summit.
00:00:46.799 --> 00:00:50.240
And I have Sirpa Salmi here from Kvanttinova.
00:00:50.240 --> 00:00:51.280
Great pleasure.
00:00:51.280 --> 00:00:57.520
So if you could introduce yourself a little bit and also tell a little bit about what Kvanttinova is.
00:00:57.759 --> 00:00:59.039
Yes, nice to meet you.
00:00:59.039 --> 00:01:05.599
Yeah, I'm Sirpa from Kvanttinova, and my responsibilities are sales, marketing, and skills and talent.
00:01:05.599 --> 00:01:06.799
That's why I'm here.
00:01:06.799 --> 00:01:19.519
And what Kvanttinova is doing, uh we are an ecosystem player which are matchmaking different companies to each other, but also talents to companies or research to companies.
00:01:19.519 --> 00:01:24.719
And why we want to do this is that we want to support the growth in Finland.
00:01:24.719 --> 00:01:25.760
That sounds great.
00:01:25.920 --> 00:01:33.120
How about how do you see the quantum ecosystem in Finland and what is unique in our ecosystem?
00:01:33.439 --> 00:01:36.560
The uniqueness, yeah, quantum ecosystem is very dense.
00:01:36.560 --> 00:01:42.560
The companies are not working in silos, they love to work with each other, like cooperate.
00:01:42.560 --> 00:01:44.400
And that's what we embrace.
00:01:44.400 --> 00:01:54.000
The ecosystem is uh the unique ecosystem comes from the combination of research, applied research, and the company's cooperation.
00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:58.239
So that makes the new unicorns and that's the recipe of success in Finland.
00:01:58.239 --> 00:02:00.079
And it's rare in the world.
00:02:00.079 --> 00:02:10.639
For example, in in our ecosystem, you have you can have the access as a company to a um VTT clean room, which is not uh possible in other places of the world.
00:02:10.639 --> 00:02:19.919
And at the same clean clean room, there can be like researchers from the university, and that makes like new ideas and uh new business.
00:02:20.240 --> 00:02:22.479
Wow, that sounds like truly amazing stuff.
00:02:22.479 --> 00:02:31.520
How do you find uh the match between the US talents, these great talents that we have here in the quantum field and also other fields, but especially quantum?
00:02:31.520 --> 00:02:36.960
How do you see that the match with the Finnish business environment and Finnish companies?
00:02:37.199 --> 00:02:38.400
It's an excellent fit.
00:02:38.400 --> 00:02:51.199
All the amazing talents I have met here, they uh they match so well to Finnish society, to the needs of companies like quantum computing, but also semiconductor or space side, for example.
00:02:51.199 --> 00:02:54.240
So it's exactly wh why we are here.
00:02:54.240 --> 00:02:55.360
That's wonderful.
00:02:55.520 --> 00:02:57.199
Okay, thank you so much, Sir pa.
00:02:57.439 --> 00:03:01.759
We will come continue talking with the amazing talents at the APS.
00:03:01.759 --> 00:03:02.400
Thank you.
00:03:02.639 --> 00:03:03.439
Thank you.
00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:12.240
Hello, we're here with Work in Finland at the Semicon booth.
00:03:12.240 --> 00:03:15.680
And I'm gonna ask a few questions from Harry Smith.
00:03:15.680 --> 00:03:17.039
And my name is Katri.
00:03:17.039 --> 00:03:18.719
I work in the Work in Finland unit.
00:03:18.719 --> 00:03:20.080
So hello Harry.
00:03:20.080 --> 00:03:22.879
Very nice to meet you and nice to have you for this interview.
00:03:22.879 --> 00:03:28.319
If you could tell me a little bit about yourself and then a little bit about what your company does.
00:03:28.800 --> 00:03:30.639
Yeah, no, super happy to be here.
00:03:30.639 --> 00:03:32.000
So I'm Harry.
00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:36.159
I was originally from the UK, recently moved to Finland.
00:03:36.159 --> 00:03:38.479
I am a quantum engineer at Semiquon.
00:03:38.479 --> 00:03:45.919
Uh, so what that means is I take care of a lot of the different aspects when we're dealing with quantum mechanics and how we can leverage them for the future.
00:03:45.919 --> 00:03:51.039
So, particularly Semicuan, we are focused on cryo CMOS applications.
00:03:51.039 --> 00:04:09.039
So, the idea behind this is that we're going to be taking a lot of the instruments you may see on the server rack next to a dilution refrigerator or other cryogenic fridge and moving them more inside the fridge itself on the same temperature plates as any of the circuits or electronics, which you may want to measure.
00:04:09.039 --> 00:04:13.599
That could be quantum dots, it could be transport measurements, stuff like this.
00:04:13.599 --> 00:04:23.120
Um, with the idea of by moving them inside the fridge, we can then limit the amount of RF cables or wiring you need to take down into your base plates.
00:04:23.120 --> 00:04:26.720
Instead, we can actually do all of that at the low temperature.
00:04:26.720 --> 00:04:37.759
So we have MUXs, we have switching devices, we're also looking at introducing signal generation, so being able to actually produce RF signals at that cryogenic temperature as well.
00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:40.879
That sounds fascinating and absolutely great.
00:04:40.879 --> 00:04:44.959
As an international talent, how do you find living in Finland?
00:04:44.959 --> 00:04:50.560
And uh, how have you settled to the business culture of Finland, especially at the semicon?
00:04:50.560 --> 00:04:53.680
And you and overall your life, how is it in Finland?
00:04:53.839 --> 00:05:00.560
Uh yeah, so I have very, very recently moved to Finland, and it's been definitely an interesting shift.
00:05:00.560 --> 00:05:08.079
Um, so Finland has a lot more respect for that kind of separation between work and life, a balance, so which is really nice to have.
00:05:08.079 --> 00:05:14.639
I I moved from doing a PhD in an environment where I would be working weekends throughout the entire week and everything.
00:05:14.639 --> 00:05:21.439
So having that ability to separate out my life and know that when I am not working, I am not working is great.
00:05:21.439 --> 00:05:25.920
Also, Lunas, going for lunch, is definitely a nice addition.
00:05:25.920 --> 00:05:33.680
In the UK, there is more of a culture of having these meal deals, as we call them, which are kind of not particularly great sandwiches with a snack and a drink.
00:05:33.680 --> 00:05:40.959
So going out and having actual proper food, sit down and sitting down and eating that with everybody is definitely a nice shift.
00:05:41.199 --> 00:05:41.839
Sounds great.
00:05:41.839 --> 00:05:46.639
Now that you have been here at the APS, how have you found these days here?
00:05:46.639 --> 00:05:49.040
And how do you find the US market overall?
00:05:49.040 --> 00:05:53.519
And also, are you hiring at the moment from especially from the US?
00:05:53.759 --> 00:05:56.720
Yeah, so US, this is not my first time at APS.
00:05:56.720 --> 00:06:06.879
It's always amazing to see all of the different research and the different uh initiatives the US has for different uh technological developments and where they're putting their money.
00:06:06.879 --> 00:06:14.319
And a lot of the companies, obviously, we have plenty here from Europe and around the world, but also a lot of very interesting companies from the US.
00:06:14.319 --> 00:06:17.439
In regards to hiring, uh, we are definitely hiring at the moment.
00:06:17.439 --> 00:06:28.079
So currently we have one roll up for a cryogenics engineer, but I know we are planning on definitely increasing in size quite quickly in the next year or so.
00:06:28.079 --> 00:06:30.959
So we are gonna have a lot more job postings going up soon.
00:06:31.199 --> 00:06:31.759
That's great.
00:06:31.759 --> 00:06:36.720
And uh all those job postings you can find at the Work in Finland site as well.
00:06:36.720 --> 00:06:39.600
I'm sure there's some of your jobs already there.
00:06:39.600 --> 00:06:41.519
But thank you very much, Harry.
00:06:41.519 --> 00:06:44.720
It was very nice to meet you, and thank you for the interview.
00:06:44.720 --> 00:06:55.839
Okay, here we are with Work in Finland at the Blue force booth at APS.
00:06:55.839 --> 00:07:03.199
And my name is Katri from Work in Finland, and I'm gonna ask a few questions from David Gunnarsson, who works at Blue force.
00:07:03.680 --> 00:07:05.680
So very nice to meet you, David.
00:07:05.680 --> 00:07:12.079
Do you want to first tell a little bit about what your company does and um, you know, general information?
00:07:12.399 --> 00:07:14.800
Yes, so thank you for having this interview.
00:07:14.800 --> 00:07:28.399
So uh Blue force is a company doing cryogenic measurement systems, and we started off as a company providing scientific tools for cryogenics to academy or technical research centers.
00:07:28.399 --> 00:07:45.920
But since the cryogenics is needed in a lot of technology that now actually commercialize, especially quantum, so we now see ourselves as a company that is part of the providing the quantum infrastructure to many of the quantum modalities that you see around here today.
00:07:46.319 --> 00:07:48.000
That sounds absolutely amazing.
00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:52.879
I mean, and you have a really nice presence here at the APS and a very nice looking booth.
00:07:52.879 --> 00:07:57.600
What kind of talent are you looking for to work in your company overall?
00:07:57.600 --> 00:08:00.079
What kind of positions do you usually have open?
00:08:00.079 --> 00:08:02.480
And do you have many openings here at the APS?
00:08:02.720 --> 00:08:06.160
I think we have a lot of openings because we are quite a large company.
00:08:06.160 --> 00:08:08.639
We have more than 700 people worldwide.
00:08:08.639 --> 00:08:12.480
So, of course, the variation of workforce is quite large.
00:08:12.480 --> 00:08:17.839
Of course, here in in uh at the APS, we have mainly scientists and physicists.
00:08:17.839 --> 00:08:28.639
So we actually are at a job fair, so we are uh having one or two positions open in that that regime, but then we also look for other talents, engineers, salespeople, coordinators.
00:08:28.639 --> 00:08:31.120
It's a quite broad, broad portfolio.
00:08:31.120 --> 00:08:38.720
We are a manufacturing company, so of course, in that context, we also need people that can do assembly work and manufacturing skills.
00:08:38.720 --> 00:08:41.039
Uh so it's a quite broad range.
00:08:41.039 --> 00:08:47.120
So it's hard to say that there's one, but there is steady, steady sort of uh recruitments going on for sure.
00:08:47.120 --> 00:08:47.440
Yes.
00:08:47.759 --> 00:08:52.480
How about as you are an international talent also working in Finland?
00:08:52.480 --> 00:08:58.399
How how would you describe the working culture overall in Finland and specifically at Blue Force?
00:08:58.399 --> 00:09:01.279
How is it if somebody gets interested in your openings?
00:09:01.279 --> 00:09:04.399
How how do you get settled and how do you how do you find it?
00:09:04.399 --> 00:09:07.440
And you have like first-hand information because you're from Sweden, right?
00:09:07.919 --> 00:09:13.519
So, of course, I came to Finland through through through academia, so there was maybe a little bit different setting.
00:09:13.519 --> 00:09:19.039
Blueforce have recruited talent from abroad, and uh we have a good process of getting them on board.
00:09:19.039 --> 00:09:23.279
I think just two weeks ago I had a new person coming in from Ireland.
00:09:23.279 --> 00:09:29.039
It it's been going quite well, and I think people like like the atmosphere coming.
00:09:29.039 --> 00:09:34.399
We we call ourselves Blueforcians, so it's a quite tight-knit culture of doing these systems.
00:09:34.399 --> 00:09:38.960
But I haven't yeah, haven't felt any big different uh problems.
00:09:38.960 --> 00:09:52.159
English is very easy to use as uh someone coming from abroad, and Blueforce have English as their language, so it's very easy for people from abroad to actually join the company and be part of the operation from day one.
00:09:52.480 --> 00:09:53.360
Sounds wonderful.
00:09:53.360 --> 00:09:59.200
I think Blue Forcian sounds like a wonderful option for probably many people.
00:09:59.200 --> 00:10:07.360
Yes, I want to thank you very much for this interview, and it was very nice to meet you, and um, all the best for the rest of the APS.
00:10:07.679 --> 00:10:08.480
Thank you.
00:10:13.039 --> 00:10:15.200
Hello, we are here at the IQM booth.
00:10:15.200 --> 00:10:16.159
My name is Katri.
00:10:16.159 --> 00:10:26.000
I'm from work in Finland, and I have the pleasure of having Galina here from IQM, and uh who's the head of talent acquisition at IQM.
00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:27.279
Very nice to meet you.
00:10:27.279 --> 00:10:32.720
Um would you like to introduce yourself a little bit and also tell what IQM is all about?
00:10:32.720 --> 00:10:33.759
Yeah, sure, of course.
00:10:33.840 --> 00:10:36.399
Um, so hi, I'm Galina.
00:10:36.399 --> 00:10:40.480
Um, leading our talent acquisition efforts for the past four and a half years at IQM.
00:10:40.480 --> 00:10:44.159
We are um global leader in quantum computing.
00:10:44.159 --> 00:10:53.120
So um we've grown to nearly 400 employees now, so around the world, founded in Finland in 2019 and now have been expanding internationally.
00:10:53.120 --> 00:10:57.440
I think we are working with super consumption qubits, so something that maybe it's good to know.
00:10:57.440 --> 00:11:00.879
And um, we build full-stack quantum computers internationally.
00:11:00.879 --> 00:11:04.000
Is it good enough introduction?
00:11:04.240 --> 00:11:05.039
That sounds great.
00:11:05.039 --> 00:11:09.039
And I have been following your growth path, and I must say it's really impressive.
00:11:09.039 --> 00:11:11.039
So, congratulations for your company.
00:11:11.039 --> 00:11:13.039
How do you find the US market?
00:11:13.039 --> 00:11:15.679
Uh how do you how do you find the APS here?
00:11:15.679 --> 00:11:18.639
And how have you found now that we have been here for a few days?
00:11:18.639 --> 00:11:19.039
Yeah.
00:11:19.279 --> 00:11:19.679
Thank you.
00:11:19.679 --> 00:11:20.720
That's a good question.
00:11:20.720 --> 00:11:25.919
So actually, we this is not our first APS March meeting, so we have been participating for a few years.
00:11:25.919 --> 00:11:34.320
I think this one is quite special though, because this now comes after we sold and delivered our first quantum computer in Oak Rish National Lab.
00:11:34.320 --> 00:11:40.639
So actually, more people know about us, so we get a lot of interest from the talent and from the market in general.
00:11:40.639 --> 00:11:50.399
Regarding the US market, so we have five people on the ground right now, so mainly in business development and technical sales, but we are also growing and um yeah, have been enjoying it so far.
00:11:50.399 --> 00:11:51.600
I think it's a great event.
00:11:51.840 --> 00:11:56.480
And um, how about um are you hiring at the moment any talents to work in Finland?
00:11:56.480 --> 00:12:05.919
How do you obviously you're a very international company, but how would you see the match between the US talents that we meet here and the Finnish working culture?
00:12:06.240 --> 00:12:07.600
Another very good question.
00:12:07.600 --> 00:12:12.720
So, actually, in APS March meeting, uh the talent is actually also quite diverse and international.
00:12:12.720 --> 00:12:17.120
So people are coming not only from the US institutions, but also actually everywhere in the world.
00:12:17.120 --> 00:12:21.440
And for us, we are hiring in many places, actually, as I mentioned.
00:12:21.440 --> 00:12:24.000
So it's Europe, US, Asia Pacific as well.
00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:26.080
And we had quite a lot of interest.
00:12:26.080 --> 00:12:30.639
And I think there are actually quite a lot of good um match of uh candidates.
00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:33.519
I think uh people are coming from a very relevant background over here.
00:12:33.519 --> 00:12:35.919
And we do um relocate, well, okay.
00:12:35.919 --> 00:12:42.000
I cannot tell like if we're gonna relocate people specifically from this event, but we usually uh provide this sort of support.
00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:50.720
And we have quite a few people, so we have more than uh 50 nationalities in the company, and I think we have been all integrated quite well.
00:12:50.720 --> 00:13:02.960
Actually, like thinking about it is a little bit surprising, but I think Finland somehow is an easy place to integrate, especially when you come from you know tech background and um coming for work for an international company.
00:13:02.960 --> 00:13:07.200
We also provide some support, language courses, for example, so I guess it helps as well.
00:13:07.519 --> 00:13:08.320
Yeah, wow.
00:13:08.320 --> 00:13:10.399
More than 50 nationalities in your company.
00:13:10.399 --> 00:13:11.120
That's amazing.
00:13:11.120 --> 00:13:17.200
But yes, um, I want to thank you so much for this interview and I wish all the best for the rest of APS and and for everything.
00:13:17.200 --> 00:13:18.080
Thank you, Galina.
00:13:18.320 --> 00:13:19.200
Thank you, Katri.
00:13:19.200 --> 00:13:20.399
Thanks a lot.
00:13:24.799 --> 00:13:26.879
Okay, hello from APS.
00:13:26.879 --> 00:13:33.279
We are here at the Quantrolox booth, a difficult name.
00:13:33.279 --> 00:13:38.559
My name is Katri, I'm from Work in Finland, and I have Dominic here from this company.
00:13:38.559 --> 00:13:39.679
Hello, Dominic.
00:13:39.679 --> 00:13:43.440
Can you introduce yourself and tell a few words about your company?
00:13:43.840 --> 00:13:49.200
Um, do you want me to take um I'm Dominic Lennon, I'm director of products and co-founder here at Quantrolox.
00:13:49.200 --> 00:13:55.919
My background really is I'm doing automation systems for quantum computers, and that's essentially what our company does.
00:13:55.919 --> 00:14:02.639
So it's kind of a natural evolution of what we were when I was doing my research um back in the day.
00:14:02.639 --> 00:14:12.720
The reason we do this is there is a large need for being able to automate the processes of bringing up and tuning quantum computing systems because they are not simple.
00:14:12.720 --> 00:14:14.879
They don't drive themselves per se.
00:14:14.879 --> 00:14:21.360
So you need a sort of self-driving automation system to be able to keep them stable, keep them operational, and keep them working.
00:14:21.360 --> 00:14:28.240
We also work on other things like educational programs to help people understand how to do quantum computing hardware.
00:14:28.559 --> 00:14:30.320
Well, that that sounds amazing.
00:14:30.320 --> 00:14:31.519
I mean, wonderful work.
00:14:31.519 --> 00:14:34.480
You are based in Finland, your company's based in Finland, right?
00:14:34.480 --> 00:14:39.200
How do you find the talents here maybe matching with the Finnish working culture?
00:14:39.200 --> 00:14:43.360
And how do you find your, you know, how is your your business culture in Finland?
00:14:43.360 --> 00:14:44.960
Uh do you think it's a good match?
00:14:45.200 --> 00:14:47.440
Yeah, I think there's a there's a really good match there.
00:14:47.440 --> 00:14:55.679
I mean, I work shoulder to shoulder with, even though I'm listening from the UK, but I work with the Finnish team every day, all the time on video calls.
00:14:55.679 --> 00:15:04.399
We're a remote working company, so I feel almost like I'm part of the Finnish family there, and I really, really love the culture and the business culture on that side of things.
00:15:04.399 --> 00:15:06.879
Very frank and very honest and very open.
00:15:06.879 --> 00:15:08.320
I really enjoy that very much.
00:15:08.320 --> 00:15:18.559
And it does match how I feel like the business culture here is in the US as well, which I think is a really, really, really good dynamic for anybody who's looking for role in the Finnish ecosystem.
00:15:18.879 --> 00:15:19.519
That sounds great.
00:15:19.519 --> 00:15:21.919
How about is this your first time in APS?
00:15:21.919 --> 00:15:23.759
How do you find this summit?
00:15:23.759 --> 00:15:26.320
Has it been good for for you this time?
00:15:26.639 --> 00:15:30.879
Yeah, we're we're really starting to announce quite a little bit of diverse product lines here.
00:15:30.879 --> 00:15:37.200
So I myself um think I've been to every APS for like the last six years or something like that.
00:15:37.200 --> 00:15:41.759
Yeah, several times now as an exhibitor, uh, but also I used to be here for the research.
00:15:41.759 --> 00:15:45.200
This is a really, really nice uh Denver is a really, really nice location.
00:15:45.200 --> 00:15:46.879
I really, really love Colorado.
00:15:46.879 --> 00:15:49.759
The um organizers have done a great job this time round.
00:15:49.759 --> 00:15:52.399
And we're having a really, really good time here, actually.
00:15:52.399 --> 00:15:59.279
I think the um uh progress on the products and the launches is really, really, really hitting home, and a lot of people have given us great feedback.
00:15:59.519 --> 00:16:00.159
Wonderful.
00:16:00.159 --> 00:16:04.799
I wish you all the best for the remaining of APS and overall in the future.
00:16:04.799 --> 00:16:05.600
For the future.
00:16:05.600 --> 00:16:08.799
Well, thank you so much for this interview and uh thanks.
00:16:08.799 --> 00:16:14.559
All right, hello.
00:16:14.559 --> 00:16:18.720
We are here with Work in Finland at the Arctic Instruments booth.
00:16:18.720 --> 00:16:26.000
And my name is Katri from Work in Finland, Business Finland, and I have Bilge here from Arctic Instruments.
00:16:26.000 --> 00:16:32.720
So if you could tell me a little bit about, firstly introduce who you are and tell me a little bit about your company, that would be great.
00:16:32.960 --> 00:16:34.000
Okay, thank you so much.
00:16:34.000 --> 00:16:47.679
My name is Bilge, I'm the head of business development at Arctic Instruments, and my role is to take care of customer communications, do a little bit of marketing support, and whatever is needed in a company, in a startup company.
00:16:47.679 --> 00:16:48.720
That sounds wonderful.
00:16:48.879 --> 00:16:54.639
So we are at the APS summit now, and uh there's a lot happening here in this field.
00:16:54.639 --> 00:16:56.799
Uh, how have you found this event?
00:16:56.799 --> 00:16:59.919
And are you getting engagement here at your booth?
00:17:00.240 --> 00:17:00.960
This is great.
00:17:00.960 --> 00:17:02.639
It's really great to be here.
00:17:02.639 --> 00:17:04.400
There's so many people around.
00:17:04.400 --> 00:17:06.880
New faces and familiar faces.
00:17:06.880 --> 00:17:13.759
Usually I take care of customer communications and Arctic Instruments, so I do the all the communications, I know many people.
00:17:13.759 --> 00:17:19.359
And now with this conference, with this exhibition, I have the chance to match the faces.
00:17:19.359 --> 00:17:21.039
And it's great, really.
00:17:21.039 --> 00:17:23.839
It it gives you the opportunity to connect truly.
00:17:23.839 --> 00:17:25.440
I I'm really loving it here.
00:17:25.440 --> 00:17:32.480
It's a little bit overwhelming because I don't know, it's maybe a hundred times more crowded than the conferences that I'm used to in Europe.
00:17:32.480 --> 00:17:34.960
But this is, I think this is the idea, right?
00:17:34.960 --> 00:17:35.759
Why we are here.
00:17:35.759 --> 00:17:36.640
It's it's really good.
00:17:36.640 --> 00:17:38.240
I'm really enjoying it a lot.
00:17:38.240 --> 00:17:40.160
Good, that sounds wonderful.
00:17:40.319 --> 00:17:46.960
Um uh regarding like opportunities in your company for talents, what kind of openings do you usually have?
00:17:46.960 --> 00:17:50.640
Is your in uh well, it seems like your company is quite international.
00:17:50.640 --> 00:17:52.480
You have uh international people working.
00:17:52.480 --> 00:17:55.039
And how do you find the US market talent-wise?
00:17:55.279 --> 00:17:56.799
It's uh new to us.
00:17:56.799 --> 00:18:11.680
First of all, we are a new company and we have a rather small headcount at the moment, and we have found our talent all in Finland, even though we have internationally really diverse employees, US in terms of talent.
00:18:11.680 --> 00:18:29.200
This US market is really new to us, and we are exploring, we are having conversations with students, and they're coming and asking, especially because I'm coming from a researcher background, uh, the students coming and asking me how I transitioned from academia to industry.
00:18:29.200 --> 00:18:33.759
I'm sharing my story with them, and it's always so interesting, and I'm getting good feedback.
00:18:33.759 --> 00:18:39.039
I haven't like we haven't hired anyone from the US, but maybe in the future.
00:18:39.039 --> 00:18:40.480
Yeah, that's great.
00:18:40.880 --> 00:18:44.160
Thank you so much for this interview and all the best.
00:18:44.160 --> 00:18:51.200
Hello, we are here at APS.
00:18:51.200 --> 00:18:57.119
My name is Katri, I'm from work in Finland, and we have uh Tommi from Vexum.
00:18:57.119 --> 00:19:01.039
So we're gonna ask a few questions from his company, Vexlum.
00:19:01.359 --> 00:19:02.319
Hi Katri, thanks.
00:19:02.319 --> 00:19:04.799
So I'm indeed working with uh Vexlum.
00:19:04.799 --> 00:19:10.079
We are based in Tampere, in Finland, and we are a semiconductor uh laser company.
00:19:10.079 --> 00:19:17.440
We do uh high power single frequency lasers for quantum applications, mostly for atom cooling and ion trapping applications.
00:19:17.440 --> 00:19:24.880
Company Core Know-how is indeed in the semiconductor materials, and we are a spin-off from Tampere University.
00:19:25.119 --> 00:19:30.319
Well, that sounds amazing! And we can see all these devices here that you you have.
00:19:30.319 --> 00:19:38.240
How do you now that we have been here in APS for a few days, how do you find this um US market and how has APS been for you?
00:19:38.480 --> 00:19:39.839
Yeah, APS has been great.
00:19:39.839 --> 00:19:41.759
So it's uh it's been a busy show.
00:19:41.759 --> 00:19:51.920
Although it's uh of course a vast uh span of physic applications, so not spot on only what we do, but of course there are a lot of uh AMO physicists here as well.
00:19:51.920 --> 00:20:03.200
And in general, USA is our uh most important market, and we have also here a local local presence, so we have Vexto US um subsidiary here in uh Colorado.
00:20:03.440 --> 00:20:06.559
Wow, yes, I didn't know that that you're already here in the market.
00:20:06.559 --> 00:20:07.279
That's great.
00:20:07.279 --> 00:20:09.440
How about your working culture?
00:20:09.440 --> 00:20:12.559
How are you open to hiring international talents?
00:20:12.559 --> 00:20:16.720
And are you open to maybe hire some US talents in the future?
00:20:17.039 --> 00:20:17.759
Yeah, absolutely.
00:20:17.759 --> 00:20:23.680
Well, first covering the US, so it's still uh like uh ramping up the um operations here.
00:20:23.680 --> 00:20:33.039
So at the moment it's uh kind of business development that we are doing here, but later on, probably we want to have also uh local sales and service operations here.
00:20:33.039 --> 00:20:42.319
Then going back to Finland, well, we are we like to say that we are born international, so uh well we export everything from our revenue.
00:20:42.319 --> 00:20:45.279
And also, well, we are international in other aspects.
00:20:45.279 --> 00:20:51.759
So one of our co-founders, uh Professor Mirce Guina, is for example a double citizens of Finland and Romania.
00:20:51.759 --> 00:20:55.039
So in that sense, uh international company from to start with.
00:20:55.359 --> 00:21:01.440
Yes, so you're you're already experienced in the the international working culture, so that's not a uh problem to you.
00:21:01.440 --> 00:21:03.440
Well, this sounds really great.
00:21:03.440 --> 00:21:06.079
And thank you so much for this interview, Tommi.
00:21:06.079 --> 00:21:09.599
And all the best for the rest of the APS and for your business, of course.
00:21:09.599 --> 00:21:10.079
Thank you.
00:00:01.439 --> 00:00:09.119
Welcome to Global Edge Talk, where we connect you with people and ideas shaping the future of global business and innovation.
00:00:09.119 --> 00:00:16.800
It's an industry being built by people, by people like today's guests.
00:00:16.800 --> 00:00:22.160
We got down with Object Recording at the APS Global Physics Summit 2026.
00:00:22.160 --> 00:00:31.760
Recorded in collaboration with Business Finland to talk about what it really takes to turn cutting-edge physics into scalable products and why Finland is needing to charge.
00:00:31.760 --> 00:00:36.159
From hardware and cryogenics to talent, culture, and the future of automation.
00:00:36.159 --> 00:00:37.439
This one's packed.
00:00:37.439 --> 00:00:38.799
Let's get into it.
00:00:40.479 --> 00:00:41.520
Hello, hello.
00:00:41.520 --> 00:00:46.799
We are at the Work in Finland booth at the Career Fair at the APS Summit.
00:00:46.799 --> 00:00:50.240
And I have Sirpa Salmi here from Kvanttinova.
00:00:50.240 --> 00:00:51.280
Great pleasure.
00:00:51.280 --> 00:00:57.520
So if you could introduce yourself a little bit and also tell a little bit about what Kvanttinova is.
00:00:57.759 --> 00:00:59.039
Yes, nice to meet you.
00:00:59.039 --> 00:01:05.599
Yeah, I'm Sirpa from Kvanttinova, and my responsibilities are sales, marketing, and skills and talent.
00:01:05.599 --> 00:01:06.799
That's why I'm here.
00:01:06.799 --> 00:01:19.519
And what Kvanttinova is doing, uh we are an ecosystem player which are matchmaking different companies to each other, but also talents to companies or research to companies.
00:01:19.519 --> 00:01:24.719
And why we want to do this is that we want to support the growth in Finland.
00:01:24.719 --> 00:01:25.760
That sounds great.
00:01:25.920 --> 00:01:33.120
How about how do you see the quantum ecosystem in Finland and what is unique in our ecosystem?
00:01:33.439 --> 00:01:36.560
The uniqueness, yeah, quantum ecosystem is very dense.
00:01:36.560 --> 00:01:42.560
The companies are not working in silos, they love to work with each other, like cooperate.
00:01:42.560 --> 00:01:44.400
And that's what we embrace.
00:01:44.400 --> 00:01:54.000
The ecosystem is uh the unique ecosystem comes from the combination of research, applied research, and the company's cooperation.
00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:58.239
So that makes the new unicorns and that's the recipe of success in Finland.
00:01:58.239 --> 00:02:00.079
And it's rare in the world.
00:02:00.079 --> 00:02:10.639
For example, in in our ecosystem, you have you can have the access as a company to a um VTT clean room, which is not uh possible in other places of the world.
00:02:10.639 --> 00:02:19.919
And at the same clean clean room, there can be like researchers from the university, and that makes like new ideas and uh new business.
00:02:20.240 --> 00:02:22.479
Wow, that sounds like truly amazing stuff.
00:02:22.479 --> 00:02:31.520
How do you find uh the match between the US talents, these great talents that we have here in the quantum field and also other fields, but especially quantum?
00:02:31.520 --> 00:02:36.960
How do you see that the match with the Finnish business environment and Finnish companies?
00:02:37.199 --> 00:02:38.400
It's an excellent fit.
00:02:38.400 --> 00:02:51.199
All the amazing talents I have met here, they uh they match so well to Finnish society, to the needs of companies like quantum computing, but also semiconductor or space side, for example.
00:02:51.199 --> 00:02:54.240
So it's exactly wh why we are here.
00:02:54.240 --> 00:02:55.360
That's wonderful.
00:02:55.520 --> 00:02:57.199
Okay, thank you so much, Sir pa.
00:02:57.439 --> 00:03:01.759
We will come continue talking with the amazing talents at the APS.
00:03:01.759 --> 00:03:02.400
Thank you.
00:03:02.639 --> 00:03:03.439
Thank you.
00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:12.240
Hello, we're here with Work in Finland at the Semicon booth.
00:03:12.240 --> 00:03:15.680
And I'm gonna ask a few questions from Harry Smith.
00:03:15.680 --> 00:03:17.039
And my name is Katri.
00:03:17.039 --> 00:03:18.719
I work in the Work in Finland unit.
00:03:18.719 --> 00:03:20.080
So hello Harry.
00:03:20.080 --> 00:03:22.879
Very nice to meet you and nice to have you for this interview.
00:03:22.879 --> 00:03:28.319
If you could tell me a little bit about yourself and then a little bit about what your company does.
00:03:28.800 --> 00:03:30.639
Yeah, no, super happy to be here.
00:03:30.639 --> 00:03:32.000
So I'm Harry.
00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:36.159
I was originally from the UK, recently moved to Finland.
00:03:36.159 --> 00:03:38.479
I am a quantum engineer at Semiquon.
00:03:38.479 --> 00:03:45.919
Uh, so what that means is I take care of a lot of the different aspects when we're dealing with quantum mechanics and how we can leverage them for the future.
00:03:45.919 --> 00:03:51.039
So, particularly Semicuan, we are focused on cryo CMOS applications.
00:03:51.039 --> 00:04:09.039
So, the idea behind this is that we're going to be taking a lot of the instruments you may see on the server rack next to a dilution refrigerator or other cryogenic fridge and moving them more inside the fridge itself on the same temperature plates as any of the circuits or electronics, which you may want to measure.
00:04:09.039 --> 00:04:13.599
That could be quantum dots, it could be transport measurements, stuff like this.
00:04:13.599 --> 00:04:23.120
Um, with the idea of by moving them inside the fridge, we can then limit the amount of RF cables or wiring you need to take down into your base plates.
00:04:23.120 --> 00:04:26.720
Instead, we can actually do all of that at the low temperature.
00:04:26.720 --> 00:04:37.759
So we have MUXs, we have switching devices, we're also looking at introducing signal generation, so being able to actually produce RF signals at that cryogenic temperature as well.
00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:40.879
That sounds fascinating and absolutely great.
00:04:40.879 --> 00:04:44.959
As an international talent, how do you find living in Finland?
00:04:44.959 --> 00:04:50.560
And uh, how have you settled to the business culture of Finland, especially at the semicon?
00:04:50.560 --> 00:04:53.680
And you and overall your life, how is it in Finland?
00:04:53.839 --> 00:05:00.560
Uh yeah, so I have very, very recently moved to Finland, and it's been definitely an interesting shift.
00:05:00.560 --> 00:05:08.079
Um, so Finland has a lot more respect for that kind of separation between work and life, a balance, so which is really nice to have.
00:05:08.079 --> 00:05:14.639
I I moved from doing a PhD in an environment where I would be working weekends throughout the entire week and everything.
00:05:14.639 --> 00:05:21.439
So having that ability to separate out my life and know that when I am not working, I am not working is great.
00:05:21.439 --> 00:05:25.920
Also, Lunas, going for lunch, is definitely a nice addition.
00:05:25.920 --> 00:05:33.680
In the UK, there is more of a culture of having these meal deals, as we call them, which are kind of not particularly great sandwiches with a snack and a drink.
00:05:33.680 --> 00:05:40.959
So going out and having actual proper food, sit down and sitting down and eating that with everybody is definitely a nice shift.
00:05:41.199 --> 00:05:41.839
Sounds great.
00:05:41.839 --> 00:05:46.639
Now that you have been here at the APS, how have you found these days here?
00:05:46.639 --> 00:05:49.040
And how do you find the US market overall?
00:05:49.040 --> 00:05:53.519
And also, are you hiring at the moment from especially from the US?
00:05:53.759 --> 00:05:56.720
Yeah, so US, this is not my first time at APS.
00:05:56.720 --> 00:06:06.879
It's always amazing to see all of the different research and the different uh initiatives the US has for different uh technological developments and where they're putting their money.
00:06:06.879 --> 00:06:14.319
And a lot of the companies, obviously, we have plenty here from Europe and around the world, but also a lot of very interesting companies from the US.
00:06:14.319 --> 00:06:17.439
In regards to hiring, uh, we are definitely hiring at the moment.
00:06:17.439 --> 00:06:28.079
So currently we have one roll up for a cryogenics engineer, but I know we are planning on definitely increasing in size quite quickly in the next year or so.
00:06:28.079 --> 00:06:30.959
So we are gonna have a lot more job postings going up soon.
00:06:31.199 --> 00:06:31.759
That's great.
00:06:31.759 --> 00:06:36.720
And uh all those job postings you can find at the Work in Finland site as well.
00:06:36.720 --> 00:06:39.600
I'm sure there's some of your jobs already there.
00:06:39.600 --> 00:06:41.519
But thank you very much, Harry.
00:06:41.519 --> 00:06:44.720
It was very nice to meet you, and thank you for the interview.
00:06:44.720 --> 00:06:55.839
Okay, here we are with Work in Finland at the Blue force booth at APS.
00:06:55.839 --> 00:07:03.199
And my name is Katri from Work in Finland, and I'm gonna ask a few questions from David Gunnarsson, who works at Blue force.
00:07:03.680 --> 00:07:05.680
So very nice to meet you, David.
00:07:05.680 --> 00:07:12.079
Do you want to first tell a little bit about what your company does and um, you know, general information?
00:07:12.399 --> 00:07:14.800
Yes, so thank you for having this interview.
00:07:14.800 --> 00:07:28.399
So uh Blue force is a company doing cryogenic measurement systems, and we started off as a company providing scientific tools for cryogenics to academy or technical research centers.
00:07:28.399 --> 00:07:45.920
But since the cryogenics is needed in a lot of technology that now actually commercialize, especially quantum, so we now see ourselves as a company that is part of the providing the quantum infrastructure to many of the quantum modalities that you see around here today.
00:07:46.319 --> 00:07:48.000
That sounds absolutely amazing.
00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:52.879
I mean, and you have a really nice presence here at the APS and a very nice looking booth.
00:07:52.879 --> 00:07:57.600
What kind of talent are you looking for to work in your company overall?
00:07:57.600 --> 00:08:00.079
What kind of positions do you usually have open?
00:08:00.079 --> 00:08:02.480
And do you have many openings here at the APS?
00:08:02.720 --> 00:08:06.160
I think we have a lot of openings because we are quite a large company.
00:08:06.160 --> 00:08:08.639
We have more than 700 people worldwide.
00:08:08.639 --> 00:08:12.480
So, of course, the variation of workforce is quite large.
00:08:12.480 --> 00:08:17.839
Of course, here in in uh at the APS, we have mainly scientists and physicists.
00:08:17.839 --> 00:08:28.639
So we actually are at a job fair, so we are uh having one or two positions open in that that regime, but then we also look for other talents, engineers, salespeople, coordinators.
00:08:28.639 --> 00:08:31.120
It's a quite broad, broad portfolio.
00:08:31.120 --> 00:08:38.720
We are a manufacturing company, so of course, in that context, we also need people that can do assembly work and manufacturing skills.
00:08:38.720 --> 00:08:41.039
Uh so it's a quite broad range.
00:08:41.039 --> 00:08:47.120
So it's hard to say that there's one, but there is steady, steady sort of uh recruitments going on for sure.
00:08:47.120 --> 00:08:47.440
Yes.
00:08:47.759 --> 00:08:52.480
How about as you are an international talent also working in Finland?
00:08:52.480 --> 00:08:58.399
How how would you describe the working culture overall in Finland and specifically at Blue Force?
00:08:58.399 --> 00:09:01.279
How is it if somebody gets interested in your openings?
00:09:01.279 --> 00:09:04.399
How how do you get settled and how do you how do you find it?
00:09:04.399 --> 00:09:07.440
And you have like first-hand information because you're from Sweden, right?
00:09:07.919 --> 00:09:13.519
So, of course, I came to Finland through through through academia, so there was maybe a little bit different setting.
00:09:13.519 --> 00:09:19.039
Blueforce have recruited talent from abroad, and uh we have a good process of getting them on board.
00:09:19.039 --> 00:09:23.279
I think just two weeks ago I had a new person coming in from Ireland.
00:09:23.279 --> 00:09:29.039
It it's been going quite well, and I think people like like the atmosphere coming.
00:09:29.039 --> 00:09:34.399
We we call ourselves Blueforcians, so it's a quite tight-knit culture of doing these systems.
00:09:34.399 --> 00:09:38.960
But I haven't yeah, haven't felt any big different uh problems.
00:09:38.960 --> 00:09:52.159
English is very easy to use as uh someone coming from abroad, and Blueforce have English as their language, so it's very easy for people from abroad to actually join the company and be part of the operation from day one.
00:09:52.480 --> 00:09:53.360
Sounds wonderful.
00:09:53.360 --> 00:09:59.200
I think Blue Forcian sounds like a wonderful option for probably many people.
00:09:59.200 --> 00:10:07.360
Yes, I want to thank you very much for this interview, and it was very nice to meet you, and um, all the best for the rest of the APS.
00:10:07.679 --> 00:10:08.480
Thank you.
00:10:13.039 --> 00:10:15.200
Hello, we are here at the IQM booth.
00:10:15.200 --> 00:10:16.159
My name is Katri.
00:10:16.159 --> 00:10:26.000
I'm from work in Finland, and I have the pleasure of having Galina here from IQM, and uh who's the head of talent acquisition at IQM.
00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:27.279
Very nice to meet you.
00:10:27.279 --> 00:10:32.720
Um would you like to introduce yourself a little bit and also tell what IQM is all about?
00:10:32.720 --> 00:10:33.759
Yeah, sure, of course.
00:10:33.840 --> 00:10:36.399
Um, so hi, I'm Galina.
00:10:36.399 --> 00:10:40.480
Um, leading our talent acquisition efforts for the past four and a half years at IQM.
00:10:40.480 --> 00:10:44.159
We are um global leader in quantum computing.
00:10:44.159 --> 00:10:53.120
So um we've grown to nearly 400 employees now, so around the world, founded in Finland in 2019 and now have been expanding internationally.
00:10:53.120 --> 00:10:57.440
I think we are working with super consumption qubits, so something that maybe it's good to know.
00:10:57.440 --> 00:11:00.879
And um, we build full-stack quantum computers internationally.
00:11:00.879 --> 00:11:04.000
Is it good enough introduction?
00:11:04.240 --> 00:11:05.039
That sounds great.
00:11:05.039 --> 00:11:09.039
And I have been following your growth path, and I must say it's really impressive.
00:11:09.039 --> 00:11:11.039
So, congratulations for your company.
00:11:11.039 --> 00:11:13.039
How do you find the US market?
00:11:13.039 --> 00:11:15.679
Uh how do you how do you find the APS here?
00:11:15.679 --> 00:11:18.639
And how have you found now that we have been here for a few days?
00:11:18.639 --> 00:11:19.039
Yeah.
00:11:19.279 --> 00:11:19.679
Thank you.
00:11:19.679 --> 00:11:20.720
That's a good question.
00:11:20.720 --> 00:11:25.919
So actually, we this is not our first APS March meeting, so we have been participating for a few years.
00:11:25.919 --> 00:11:34.320
I think this one is quite special though, because this now comes after we sold and delivered our first quantum computer in Oak Rish National Lab.
00:11:34.320 --> 00:11:40.639
So actually, more people know about us, so we get a lot of interest from the talent and from the market in general.
00:11:40.639 --> 00:11:50.399
Regarding the US market, so we have five people on the ground right now, so mainly in business development and technical sales, but we are also growing and um yeah, have been enjoying it so far.
00:11:50.399 --> 00:11:51.600
I think it's a great event.
00:11:51.840 --> 00:11:56.480
And um, how about um are you hiring at the moment any talents to work in Finland?
00:11:56.480 --> 00:12:05.919
How do you obviously you're a very international company, but how would you see the match between the US talents that we meet here and the Finnish working culture?
00:12:06.240 --> 00:12:07.600
Another very good question.
00:12:07.600 --> 00:12:12.720
So, actually, in APS March meeting, uh the talent is actually also quite diverse and international.
00:12:12.720 --> 00:12:17.120
So people are coming not only from the US institutions, but also actually everywhere in the world.
00:12:17.120 --> 00:12:21.440
And for us, we are hiring in many places, actually, as I mentioned.
00:12:21.440 --> 00:12:24.000
So it's Europe, US, Asia Pacific as well.
00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:26.080
And we had quite a lot of interest.
00:12:26.080 --> 00:12:30.639
And I think there are actually quite a lot of good um match of uh candidates.
00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:33.519
I think uh people are coming from a very relevant background over here.
00:12:33.519 --> 00:12:35.919
And we do um relocate, well, okay.
00:12:35.919 --> 00:12:42.000
I cannot tell like if we're gonna relocate people specifically from this event, but we usually uh provide this sort of support.
00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:50.720
And we have quite a few people, so we have more than uh 50 nationalities in the company, and I think we have been all integrated quite well.
00:12:50.720 --> 00:13:02.960
Actually, like thinking about it is a little bit surprising, but I think Finland somehow is an easy place to integrate, especially when you come from you know tech background and um coming for work for an international company.
00:13:02.960 --> 00:13:07.200
We also provide some support, language courses, for example, so I guess it helps as well.
00:13:07.519 --> 00:13:08.320
Yeah, wow.
00:13:08.320 --> 00:13:10.399
More than 50 nationalities in your company.
00:13:10.399 --> 00:13:11.120
That's amazing.
00:13:11.120 --> 00:13:17.200
But yes, um, I want to thank you so much for this interview and I wish all the best for the rest of APS and and for everything.
00:13:17.200 --> 00:13:18.080
Thank you, Galina.
00:13:18.320 --> 00:13:19.200
Thank you, Katri.
00:13:19.200 --> 00:13:20.399
Thanks a lot.
00:13:24.799 --> 00:13:26.879
Okay, hello from APS.
00:13:26.879 --> 00:13:33.279
We are here at the Quantrolox booth, a difficult name.
00:13:33.279 --> 00:13:38.559
My name is Katri, I'm from Work in Finland, and I have Dominic here from this company.
00:13:38.559 --> 00:13:39.679
Hello, Dominic.
00:13:39.679 --> 00:13:43.440
Can you introduce yourself and tell a few words about your company?
00:13:43.840 --> 00:13:49.200
Um, do you want me to take um I'm Dominic Lennon, I'm director of products and co-founder here at Quantrolox.
00:13:49.200 --> 00:13:55.919
My background really is I'm doing automation systems for quantum computers, and that's essentially what our company does.
00:13:55.919 --> 00:14:02.639
So it's kind of a natural evolution of what we were when I was doing my research um back in the day.
00:14:02.639 --> 00:14:12.720
The reason we do this is there is a large need for being able to automate the processes of bringing up and tuning quantum computing systems because they are not simple.
00:14:12.720 --> 00:14:14.879
They don't drive themselves per se.
00:14:14.879 --> 00:14:21.360
So you need a sort of self-driving automation system to be able to keep them stable, keep them operational, and keep them working.
00:14:21.360 --> 00:14:28.240
We also work on other things like educational programs to help people understand how to do quantum computing hardware.
00:14:28.559 --> 00:14:30.320
Well, that that sounds amazing.
00:14:30.320 --> 00:14:31.519
I mean, wonderful work.
00:14:31.519 --> 00:14:34.480
You are based in Finland, your company's based in Finland, right?
00:14:34.480 --> 00:14:39.200
How do you find the talents here maybe matching with the Finnish working culture?
00:14:39.200 --> 00:14:43.360
And how do you find your, you know, how is your your business culture in Finland?
00:14:43.360 --> 00:14:44.960
Uh do you think it's a good match?
00:14:45.200 --> 00:14:47.440
Yeah, I think there's a there's a really good match there.
00:14:47.440 --> 00:14:55.679
I mean, I work shoulder to shoulder with, even though I'm listening from the UK, but I work with the Finnish team every day, all the time on video calls.
00:14:55.679 --> 00:15:04.399
We're a remote working company, so I feel almost like I'm part of the Finnish family there, and I really, really love the culture and the business culture on that side of things.
00:15:04.399 --> 00:15:06.879
Very frank and very honest and very open.
00:15:06.879 --> 00:15:08.320
I really enjoy that very much.
00:15:08.320 --> 00:15:18.559
And it does match how I feel like the business culture here is in the US as well, which I think is a really, really, really good dynamic for anybody who's looking for role in the Finnish ecosystem.
00:15:18.879 --> 00:15:19.519
That sounds great.
00:15:19.519 --> 00:15:21.919
How about is this your first time in APS?
00:15:21.919 --> 00:15:23.759
How do you find this summit?
00:15:23.759 --> 00:15:26.320
Has it been good for for you this time?
00:15:26.639 --> 00:15:30.879
Yeah, we're we're really starting to announce quite a little bit of diverse product lines here.
00:15:30.879 --> 00:15:37.200
So I myself um think I've been to every APS for like the last six years or something like that.
00:15:37.200 --> 00:15:41.759
Yeah, several times now as an exhibitor, uh, but also I used to be here for the research.
00:15:41.759 --> 00:15:45.200
This is a really, really nice uh Denver is a really, really nice location.
00:15:45.200 --> 00:15:46.879
I really, really love Colorado.
00:15:46.879 --> 00:15:49.759
The um organizers have done a great job this time round.
00:15:49.759 --> 00:15:52.399
And we're having a really, really good time here, actually.
00:15:52.399 --> 00:15:59.279
I think the um uh progress on the products and the launches is really, really, really hitting home, and a lot of people have given us great feedback.
00:15:59.519 --> 00:16:00.159
Wonderful.
00:16:00.159 --> 00:16:04.799
I wish you all the best for the remaining of APS and overall in the future.
00:16:04.799 --> 00:16:05.600
For the future.
00:16:05.600 --> 00:16:08.799
Well, thank you so much for this interview and uh thanks.
00:16:08.799 --> 00:16:14.559
All right, hello.
00:16:14.559 --> 00:16:18.720
We are here with Work in Finland at the Arctic Instruments booth.
00:16:18.720 --> 00:16:26.000
And my name is Katri from Work in Finland, Business Finland, and I have Bilge here from Arctic Instruments.
00:16:26.000 --> 00:16:32.720
So if you could tell me a little bit about, firstly introduce who you are and tell me a little bit about your company, that would be great.
00:16:32.960 --> 00:16:34.000
Okay, thank you so much.
00:16:34.000 --> 00:16:47.679
My name is Bilge, I'm the head of business development at Arctic Instruments, and my role is to take care of customer communications, do a little bit of marketing support, and whatever is needed in a company, in a startup company.
00:16:47.679 --> 00:16:48.720
That sounds wonderful.
00:16:48.879 --> 00:16:54.639
So we are at the APS summit now, and uh there's a lot happening here in this field.
00:16:54.639 --> 00:16:56.799
Uh, how have you found this event?
00:16:56.799 --> 00:16:59.919
And are you getting engagement here at your booth?
00:17:00.240 --> 00:17:00.960
This is great.
00:17:00.960 --> 00:17:02.639
It's really great to be here.
00:17:02.639 --> 00:17:04.400
There's so many people around.
00:17:04.400 --> 00:17:06.880
New faces and familiar faces.
00:17:06.880 --> 00:17:13.759
Usually I take care of customer communications and Arctic Instruments, so I do the all the communications, I know many people.
00:17:13.759 --> 00:17:19.359
And now with this conference, with this exhibition, I have the chance to match the faces.
00:17:19.359 --> 00:17:21.039
And it's great, really.
00:17:21.039 --> 00:17:23.839
It it gives you the opportunity to connect truly.
00:17:23.839 --> 00:17:25.440
I I'm really loving it here.
00:17:25.440 --> 00:17:32.480
It's a little bit overwhelming because I don't know, it's maybe a hundred times more crowded than the conferences that I'm used to in Europe.
00:17:32.480 --> 00:17:34.960
But this is, I think this is the idea, right?
00:17:34.960 --> 00:17:35.759
Why we are here.
00:17:35.759 --> 00:17:36.640
It's it's really good.
00:17:36.640 --> 00:17:38.240
I'm really enjoying it a lot.
00:17:38.240 --> 00:17:40.160
Good, that sounds wonderful.
00:17:40.319 --> 00:17:46.960
Um uh regarding like opportunities in your company for talents, what kind of openings do you usually have?
00:17:46.960 --> 00:17:50.640
Is your in uh well, it seems like your company is quite international.
00:17:50.640 --> 00:17:52.480
You have uh international people working.
00:17:52.480 --> 00:17:55.039
And how do you find the US market talent-wise?
00:17:55.279 --> 00:17:56.799
It's uh new to us.
00:17:56.799 --> 00:18:11.680
First of all, we are a new company and we have a rather small headcount at the moment, and we have found our talent all in Finland, even though we have internationally really diverse employees, US in terms of talent.
00:18:11.680 --> 00:18:29.200
This US market is really new to us, and we are exploring, we are having conversations with students, and they're coming and asking, especially because I'm coming from a researcher background, uh, the students coming and asking me how I transitioned from academia to industry.
00:18:29.200 --> 00:18:33.759
I'm sharing my story with them, and it's always so interesting, and I'm getting good feedback.
00:18:33.759 --> 00:18:39.039
I haven't like we haven't hired anyone from the US, but maybe in the future.
00:18:39.039 --> 00:18:40.480
Yeah, that's great.
00:18:40.880 --> 00:18:44.160
Thank you so much for this interview and all the best.
00:18:44.160 --> 00:18:51.200
Hello, we are here at APS.
00:18:51.200 --> 00:18:57.119
My name is Katri, I'm from work in Finland, and we have uh Tommi from Vexum.
00:18:57.119 --> 00:19:01.039
So we're gonna ask a few questions from his company, Vexlum.
00:19:01.359 --> 00:19:02.319
Hi Katri, thanks.
00:19:02.319 --> 00:19:04.799
So I'm indeed working with uh Vexlum.
00:19:04.799 --> 00:19:10.079
We are based in Tampere, in Finland, and we are a semiconductor uh laser company.
00:19:10.079 --> 00:19:17.440
We do uh high power single frequency lasers for quantum applications, mostly for atom cooling and ion trapping applications.
00:19:17.440 --> 00:19:24.880
Company Core Know-how is indeed in the semiconductor materials, and we are a spin-off from Tampere University.
00:19:25.119 --> 00:19:30.319
Well, that sounds amazing! And we can see all these devices here that you you have.
00:19:30.319 --> 00:19:38.240
How do you now that we have been here in APS for a few days, how do you find this um US market and how has APS been for you?
00:19:38.480 --> 00:19:39.839
Yeah, APS has been great.
00:19:39.839 --> 00:19:41.759
So it's uh it's been a busy show.
00:19:41.759 --> 00:19:51.920
Although it's uh of course a vast uh span of physic applications, so not spot on only what we do, but of course there are a lot of uh AMO physicists here as well.
00:19:51.920 --> 00:20:03.200
And in general, USA is our uh most important market, and we have also here a local local presence, so we have Vexto US um subsidiary here in uh Colorado.
00:20:03.440 --> 00:20:06.559
Wow, yes, I didn't know that that you're already here in the market.
00:20:06.559 --> 00:20:07.279
That's great.
00:20:07.279 --> 00:20:09.440
How about your working culture?
00:20:09.440 --> 00:20:12.559
How are you open to hiring international talents?
00:20:12.559 --> 00:20:16.720
And are you open to maybe hire some US talents in the future?
00:20:17.039 --> 00:20:17.759
Yeah, absolutely.
00:20:17.759 --> 00:20:23.680
Well, first covering the US, so it's still uh like uh ramping up the um operations here.
00:20:23.680 --> 00:20:33.039
So at the moment it's uh kind of business development that we are doing here, but later on, probably we want to have also uh local sales and service operations here.
00:20:33.039 --> 00:20:42.319
Then going back to Finland, well, we are we like to say that we are born international, so uh well we export everything from our revenue.
00:20:42.319 --> 00:20:45.279
And also, well, we are international in other aspects.
00:20:45.279 --> 00:20:51.759
So one of our co-founders, uh Professor Mirce Guina, is for example a double citizens of Finland and Romania.
00:20:51.759 --> 00:20:55.039
So in that sense, uh international company from to start with.
00:20:55.359 --> 00:21:01.440
Yes, so you're you're already experienced in the the international working culture, so that's not a uh problem to you.
00:21:01.440 --> 00:21:03.440
Well, this sounds really great.
00:21:03.440 --> 00:21:06.079
And thank you so much for this interview, Tommi.
00:21:06.079 --> 00:21:09.599
And all the best for the rest of the APS and for your business, of course.
00:21:09.599 --> 00:21:10.079
Thank you.
