Confidence can sound like having all the right answers. But what if real confidence is quieter and stronger: the settled kind that comes from knowing you’re held by God, not propped up by your resume? We find this in Philippians 3:4b–14, Paul’s blunt before-and-after story. He had lineage, learning, and religious credibility, yet he walks away from “earning” and toward a new center of gravity: the surpassing knowledge of God in Christ.
In this episode, Melissa and Bishop Wright have a conversation about Paul's shift, and why it matters for everyday faith and leadership. Spiritual disciplines give us the capacity to still make choices, but the order changes: God’s goodness comes first, and everything we do becomes response. That one reversal can change how we handle shame, how we think about self-worth, and how we stay steady in suffering without pretending life is easy. Listen in for the full conversation.

00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:09.359
Because once I realize that I belong to you and you belong to me and we belong to each other, then that becomes the operating set of coordinates.
00:00:09.359 --> 00:00:15.439
So as I seek God, you know, I fall down into this newer knowledge about myself.
00:00:15.439 --> 00:00:18.960
The best thing you can do for your own self-worth is seek the mind of God.
00:00:18.960 --> 00:00:30.320
And the best thing you can do with your struggles with people that are difficult to love is to seek the mind of God and to let that so thoroughly infect you that it begins to shift you.
00:00:40.240 --> 00:00:55.679
Good morning, Bishop.
00:00:56.000 --> 00:00:56.960
Good morning.
00:00:57.280 --> 00:01:05.359
This week's devotion, you named confidence based off of Philippians chapter 3, verses 4B through 14.
00:01:05.359 --> 00:01:06.480
Want to take it away?
00:01:06.799 --> 00:01:07.359
Yeah.
00:01:07.359 --> 00:01:08.799
Confidence.
00:01:08.799 --> 00:01:09.280
St.
00:01:09.280 --> 00:01:12.239
Paul's letters accomplish three things.
00:01:12.239 --> 00:01:15.120
They reveal the character of God.
00:01:15.120 --> 00:01:21.920
They invite the reader on a journey and they paint a picture of a transformed life.
00:01:21.920 --> 00:01:27.359
He's no great writer, Paul, as writers go, but he writes what he knows.
00:01:27.359 --> 00:01:34.799
He knows he's found something that surpasses the confidence he had in lineage and learning.
00:01:34.799 --> 00:01:40.239
The origin, nature, and quality of his confidence now has shifted.
00:01:40.239 --> 00:01:45.200
Before his confidence came by seeking to earn status with God.
00:01:45.200 --> 00:01:51.120
Now his confidence is in seeking the knowledge of the status of God.
00:01:51.120 --> 00:01:54.799
Previously, he was his own glory.
00:01:54.799 --> 00:02:00.640
Now we might find him humming the old hymn to God be the glory.
00:02:02.079 --> 00:02:02.560
Amen.
00:02:02.560 --> 00:02:04.239
All right, I love that.
00:02:04.239 --> 00:02:08.080
So confidence, you see, confidence, Paul's confidence shifted.
00:02:08.240 --> 00:02:08.639
Yeah.
00:02:08.879 --> 00:02:10.080
What was that shift?
00:02:10.080 --> 00:02:12.719
Why, how, all the things?
00:02:13.039 --> 00:02:19.919
Yeah, you know, what I love about Paul is Paul, you could say that Paul says, uh, you know, I have a story and I'm sticking to it all through the New Testament.
00:02:19.919 --> 00:02:26.319
And that that story is that um I thought I was right and found out I was wrong.
00:02:26.319 --> 00:02:32.000
I thought I had the full measure of it and and realized I don't have the full measure of it.
00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:41.199
I realize I thought that I could earn the thing through learning and lineage and realize now that it's all gift, 100% gift.
00:02:41.199 --> 00:03:05.520
Um, and so I I think those are the shifts uh that really um uh Paul stays tethered to, no matter which community that he's talking to, uh, that we we can't make it ourselves, uh, that we have an unbelievable and infinite resource in the risen Christ, and uh and it'll knock you down and then lift you up.
00:03:05.520 --> 00:03:07.439
That's Paul's story, this thing.
00:03:08.400 --> 00:03:08.960
I love that.
00:03:08.960 --> 00:03:31.360
You know, when I think about confidence, the shiftedness, the shift in confidence being externally validation, you know, like knowing all the things, um, you know, affirming kind of like all that old testament lineage stuff, but then he had a really a real experience of the divine within Christ that completely changed him.
00:03:31.360 --> 00:04:00.080
I guess I'm curious about how one leans in to that real lived experience because Paul had an experience of Jesus that I think reminded Paul of Paul's the divinity from within through which he had a true relationship, like was able to experience God in a way that all that external stuff just couldn't affirm.
00:04:00.080 --> 00:04:01.120
Any thoughts on that?
00:04:01.439 --> 00:04:04.560
Well, I mean yeah, I think you're just you're just sort of going deeper on the point.
00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:14.319
I think Paul came to the clarity of that he didn't have he didn't have to earn anything when it came to God.
00:04:14.319 --> 00:04:21.519
And that everything that we do is in response to the goodness already extended to us.
00:04:21.519 --> 00:04:26.480
I mean, in in a in another place, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
00:04:26.480 --> 00:04:38.959
I mean, that's that's quite a thing to get your head around because it's much easier to realize that uh or to to dream up a universe uh where it's uh quid pro quo or tit for tat.
00:04:38.959 --> 00:04:48.879
Um, well, you know, if I do this and I do that and I do the other thing, then I'll achieve holiness or or or zen or nirvana and all those sorts of things.
00:04:48.879 --> 00:04:51.199
And it's really an interesting dance, isn't it?
00:04:51.199 --> 00:04:54.160
Because there are practices that we need to take up.
00:04:54.160 --> 00:04:58.319
There are things we need to say no to, there are things we need to say yes to.
00:04:58.319 --> 00:04:59.920
Absolutely.
00:04:59.920 --> 00:05:16.800
And um, you know, what sort of predates all of that, anything that we can do, uh, is this gift extended to us, the gift of life, the gift extended to us of intellect and reason and memory and skill, um, you know, the gift of capacity that we've been given.
00:05:16.800 --> 00:05:28.480
Uh, all of that, when you run to the end of that, there's still this other piece that we didn't author, that we didn't create that that uh that is there and undergirds the whole enterprise.
00:05:28.480 --> 00:05:31.120
So Paul runs headlong into that.
00:05:31.120 --> 00:05:43.439
And then he wants to keep that out in front of the community because he knows our propensity through his own biography, which is to rely, over depend on lineage, right?
00:05:43.439 --> 00:05:45.199
Uh and uh and learning.
00:05:45.199 --> 00:05:50.000
Those things are great things, those things are great inheritances, that's all good.
00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:54.079
And yet, if the goal is seeking God, right?
00:05:54.079 --> 00:06:01.839
Seeking Christ, we have to start with oh, we have this God who's provided a means that we might know God.
00:06:01.839 --> 00:06:04.000
And we didn't do anything to generate that.
00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:05.439
We're not the author of that.
00:06:05.439 --> 00:06:10.480
God laid down the breadcrumbs, God constructed a universe in a particular way.
00:06:10.480 --> 00:06:17.360
God decided to be available to people like us with frail minds and you know oversized egos.
00:06:19.439 --> 00:06:46.959
Yeah, you know, it it's almost ironic because isn't it interesting where we see, like, oh, so-and-so's on fire for God.
00:06:47.120 --> 00:06:47.439
Yeah.
00:06:47.680 --> 00:06:52.720
Which is all about kind of like not the show, because I know it's completely authentic, right?
00:06:52.720 --> 00:07:12.800
But if we didn't do it, if we don't have to do anything to earn anything other than build a relationship that God I think longs for, it it's it's just interesting when when all of that external validation is almost confirmed or affirmed with the way people show up in the world.
00:07:12.800 --> 00:07:13.920
I don't know what to do about that.
00:07:14.160 --> 00:07:18.319
What what would it be like if we started off by saying, Wow, God is on fire for us?
00:07:18.319 --> 00:07:24.959
Ha! I mean, that that's that's and then everything uh everything else is downstream of that.
00:07:24.959 --> 00:07:48.639
All all the other fire that that we showcase that we feel and showcase in the world is in response to to coming uh to some part of the knowledge that uh that God is for us, dramatically so, and that uh God has constructed not only the universe but God's own self so as to be available and knowable.
00:07:48.639 --> 00:07:57.519
Uh, so this is why that that first point that I made is that the the letters reveal first the character of God, then they invite us on a journey.
00:07:57.839 --> 00:07:58.879
There you go.
00:07:59.199 --> 00:07:59.839
Yeah.
00:08:00.240 --> 00:08:01.759
What kind of journey?
00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:05.920
Well, you know, the journey I think is to get to know more about the God.
00:08:05.920 --> 00:08:10.879
So the flip for for Paul, it seems, is uh seeking righteousness, right?
00:08:10.879 --> 00:08:14.000
That we can somehow construct to seeking God.
00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:20.160
And that in seeking God, as I draw nearer to God, uh things start to turn out right for me.
00:08:20.160 --> 00:08:25.759
Uh, and and I don't mean uh that like we get to win the Powerball or there's no more suffering or hardship.
00:08:25.759 --> 00:08:33.759
No, but but I I become in right relationship with God, and that undergirds all of the ups and downs that I live in my life.
00:08:33.759 --> 00:08:38.159
So as I seek God, you know, I come to a truer knowledge of God.
00:08:38.159 --> 00:08:46.799
And not only that, I come to a truer knowledge of myself so I can let some of the silliness burn away or the immaturity or the unfinished parts burn away.
00:08:46.799 --> 00:08:52.320
And also how I view my neighbor, even my enemy, now gets shaped.
00:08:52.320 --> 00:09:07.360
Um, you know, I was talking to a woman the other day, a deacon in the in our church, and she works at a college, and um, you know, the the language of the work that she does at this college had to change with uh with an executive order from Washington.
00:09:07.360 --> 00:09:14.960
And her office, formerly called the office of belonging, uh, has now shifted to some other words.
00:09:14.960 --> 00:09:21.440
And and we notice together that maybe that's because belonging is ultimately dangerous.
00:09:21.440 --> 00:09:33.279
Uh, because once I realize that I belong to you and you belong to me, and we belong to each other, um, then that becomes the operating sort of uh set of coordinates.
00:09:33.279 --> 00:09:46.159
And then if we belong to each other and deeply hold that, then that could change our economics, that could change our politics, that could change the way we do healthcare, that could change the way we educate one another's children, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
00:09:46.159 --> 00:09:52.960
So, so as I seek God, you know, I fall down into this newer knowledge about myself.
00:09:52.960 --> 00:09:57.519
And so the best thing you can do for your own self-worth is seek the mind of God.
00:09:57.519 --> 00:10:12.159
Uh and the best thing you can do with your struggles with people that are uh difficult to love, uh, is to seek the mind of God and to let that so thoroughly infect you uh that uh that it begins to shift you.
00:10:12.399 --> 00:10:13.360
I love that.
00:10:13.360 --> 00:10:16.799
I love that because we remember then, right?
00:10:16.799 --> 00:10:24.480
That's literally the act of the Eucharist at the communion table, at you know, is remembering, remembering.
00:10:24.480 --> 00:10:27.279
So even the people that we can't, it's hard to love, right?
00:10:27.279 --> 00:10:28.720
We're remembering ourselves.
00:10:29.039 --> 00:10:36.399
And the reason why I name this uh confidence is because Paul says, Now I have the surpassing knowledge.
00:10:36.399 --> 00:10:38.879
So I had knowledge and it was all good.
00:10:38.879 --> 00:10:45.279
This is this is not disparaging knowledge and hard work and school and learning and you know scholarship.
00:10:45.279 --> 00:10:50.240
No, but now I have uh some other version of knowledge uh to lay beside that.
00:10:50.240 --> 00:11:00.080
And when I lay beside it, I find out the knowledge of God is surpassing knowledge, so he surpasses and transcends the bullshit.
00:11:01.279 --> 00:11:05.120
Well, I do, you know, I wanted to say thank you for your choice of words.
00:11:05.120 --> 00:11:09.039
You say he painted a picture of a transformed life.
00:11:09.039 --> 00:11:18.799
I don't know if that was intentional, but I really dig it because I think a lot of people want to paint the picture of the transformed life.
00:11:19.120 --> 00:11:27.200
Yeah, no, I I think what's so wonderful about the way that God decided to be God is that there's actually no cookie cutter.
00:11:27.200 --> 00:11:36.799
There, there is, we are this amalgam of all kinds of things, ups and downs, and family origin stuff and uh aptitudes and appetites.
00:11:36.799 --> 00:11:45.519
We are in we are unique, and and when we give that uniqueness uh to our loving God, it's amazing what God can create.
00:11:45.519 --> 00:11:51.039
You know, it's it's more like an English wild wildflower garden.
00:11:51.039 --> 00:11:57.279
You know, all these things are thrown together to make this beautiful garden, and the things are not alike.
00:11:57.279 --> 00:12:00.399
How boring would it be if everything was alike?
00:12:00.399 --> 00:12:14.960
But you know, it's a testimony actually to the glory of God that God can meet us uh in all the ways that we show up and still invite us forward into something that blesses us, uh, blesses our neighbor, and blesses the world.
00:12:15.759 --> 00:12:16.799
Thank God for that.
00:12:17.120 --> 00:12:17.759
Amen.
00:12:18.159 --> 00:12:21.039
