00:00:07.040 --> 00:00:17.039
Welcome, welcome, welcome to First in Maine, the City of Winston Salem's podcast where we give you the important information about city services and programs that impact you on a daily basis.
00:00:17.199 --> 00:00:18.719
I'm your host, Katie Gore.
00:00:19.120 --> 00:00:28.399
Today I have the pleasure of talking with Bob Thompson from the Human Relations Department about an exciting event with delicious food, music, dance, and crafts.
00:00:28.559 --> 00:00:30.719
It's called International Village.
00:00:30.879 --> 00:00:37.920
It's a great event, and I know you guys don't want to miss it, so let's jump right into it and turn the corner on first and Main.
00:00:41.359 --> 00:00:45.039
All right, we got Bob Thompson with the Human Relations Department.
00:00:45.119 --> 00:00:46.399
Hi, Bob, how are you doing?
00:00:46.560 --> 00:00:47.200
I'm doing well.
00:00:47.280 --> 00:00:48.399
It's good to be with you today.
00:00:48.640 --> 00:00:50.159
I hear you got a big event coming up.
00:00:50.240 --> 00:00:51.439
Is it September 12th?
00:00:51.679 --> 00:00:55.119
September the 12th, the second Saturday of September.
00:00:55.359 --> 00:00:56.320
Okay, all right.
00:00:56.399 --> 00:00:58.560
So you work for the Human Relations Department.
00:00:58.799 --> 00:00:59.119
I do.
00:00:59.359 --> 00:01:02.399
Kind of tell me like what they do and what their mission is.
00:01:02.719 --> 00:01:40.799
The Human Relations Department is here to assist our residents in the city with needs that they would have with fair housing, landlord tenant uh questions, and and even mediation that may need to be done, as well as uh bringing enforcement for the uh non-discrimination ordinances of the city, and then we provide language access for those that have language uh difficulties with English so that they have the same ability to have the resources and services everyone in the city has.
00:01:41.599 --> 00:01:44.640
So, what is International Village and what does it offer?
00:01:45.120 --> 00:02:04.879
International Village is we like to say it's a trip around the world to be able to learn about other foods, cultures, people, and be able to understand what is available within the city of Winston-Salem.
00:02:05.519 --> 00:02:12.000
So we have all different cultures represented, but is it true that most of the people are right here in Winston-Salem?
00:02:12.560 --> 00:02:15.039
Most of those people live right here in Winston-Salem.
00:02:15.120 --> 00:02:23.840
Some may come from outside the city itself, but they're within Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, in the triad region, yes.
00:02:24.240 --> 00:02:31.919
All right, so we talked off camera a little bit, and you were telling me that this event kind of spawned from something else we used to have?
00:02:32.479 --> 00:02:40.479
This event started uh as part of uh community event the city sponsored called Rock the Block.
00:02:40.719 --> 00:02:51.680
And part of Rock the Block was International Row, where they were inviting the different uh international communities to come and set up information and and booths.
00:02:52.080 --> 00:03:01.520
And uh then about 2013, 2014, there were many other community events going on.
00:03:01.759 --> 00:03:08.800
The city said, we're duplicating a lot of things, and this is just not a good use of our personnel and our time.
00:03:09.199 --> 00:03:17.680
Uh and so they set Rock the uh block aside, but International Row became International Village.
00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:26.000
And that part of the event continued and has continued now through the current time, and we hope to see it continue for many years to come.
00:03:26.319 --> 00:03:32.960
And so important for people to experience different like cultures and things they might not normally see, right?
00:03:33.439 --> 00:03:42.800
If you don't realize it, a lot of the basis of what we do every day comes from other cultures.
00:03:43.199 --> 00:03:47.039
And we enjoy it and don't even realize why.
00:03:47.199 --> 00:04:05.039
And so International Village gives you an opportunity to meet the people who come from those cultures to be able to see how they interact and become a part of us and be able to present their crafts, their music, their dance, their food.
00:04:05.360 --> 00:04:09.039
And it's just an exciting time to get everybody together.
00:04:09.439 --> 00:04:11.520
Anywhere with food I love.
00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:15.280
Um I love every year to go see the dancing.
00:04:15.360 --> 00:04:17.360
It just intrigues me every year.
00:04:17.519 --> 00:04:22.879
Since you're the expert, like kind of tell me like what I should go check out this year.
00:04:23.360 --> 00:04:35.279
We have scheduled already, we have others that will we're waiting to get confirmation on, but already we have uh some uh a Korean drum corps.
00:04:35.519 --> 00:04:46.480
This is a group of older Korean ladies who do a fantastic job in a drum corps, and it is just fascinating to watch them.
00:04:46.639 --> 00:04:55.439
They come in their uh traditional garb and their large kettle drums, and they're performing for us through that.
00:04:55.759 --> 00:05:03.519
We have a group of uh Chinese who come and do their traditional dances in their garb.
00:05:03.839 --> 00:05:14.879
And it's very intriguing to watch how they have choreographed and gotten together to make this not just a dance, it gives a message.
00:05:15.040 --> 00:05:17.600
And that's just fascinating to see.
00:05:17.839 --> 00:05:24.399
And so we've got several groups like that, and then we have some who come and sing songs from their countries.
00:05:24.560 --> 00:05:31.040
And we're talking to some different groups right now, hoping that they will get the time to come and join us as well.
00:05:31.360 --> 00:05:34.560
I love the lady drummers, women with rhythm.
00:05:34.720 --> 00:05:35.680
That's amazing.
00:05:35.920 --> 00:05:37.199
I love that so much.
00:05:37.360 --> 00:05:40.639
So it's in downtown with the Salem, September 12th.
00:05:40.959 --> 00:05:41.920
Where downtown?
00:05:42.240 --> 00:05:43.199
Where downtown.
00:05:43.439 --> 00:05:48.720
Winston Square Park is one of the key uh areas that we're at.
00:05:48.879 --> 00:06:09.600
And then just to make it easier, we say Winston Square Park, but it spills into the streets behind the park, Spruce Street, over to Poplar Street, and through that area, we'll have uh many different vendors as well as uh community organizations there with their table set up.
00:06:09.839 --> 00:06:18.160
Uh last year we had uh 10 food trucks that were there with different uh groups, so they're all there.
00:06:18.480 --> 00:06:33.360
We have activities for the kids, we have different groups that are teaching things that are helpful, and a lot of that comes from their cultural background, which is something that draws a lot of people to know more.
00:06:33.680 --> 00:06:35.759
What's your favorite thing to eat?
00:06:36.079 --> 00:06:38.240
What is my favorite thing to eat?
00:06:38.480 --> 00:06:45.360
Oh my! I have enjoyed getting into the Asian foods uh last year.
00:06:45.680 --> 00:06:48.879
This year I want to go to the African food truck.
00:06:49.120 --> 00:06:51.519
Uh they're they're so different.
00:06:52.000 --> 00:06:52.879
Get a swarma.
00:06:53.439 --> 00:06:54.480
Those are good food.
00:06:54.560 --> 00:06:56.399
That's good food, yes.
00:06:56.720 --> 00:06:59.600
Okay, so a little bit of everything for everybody.
00:06:59.920 --> 00:07:00.399
Yes.
00:07:00.639 --> 00:07:06.800
All right, and we will have a traditional uh street taco stand as well.
00:07:07.279 --> 00:07:07.920
All right.
00:07:08.079 --> 00:07:09.839
Well, thanks so much for joining me, Bob.
00:07:09.920 --> 00:07:11.680
Is there anything else you want to add?
00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:13.600
I just want to invite you to come.
00:07:13.759 --> 00:07:16.879
September the 12th, International Village.
00:07:17.040 --> 00:07:33.600
Uh it starts at noon, goes through 5 p.m., and this will be a great time for the community to come together and to enjoy the variety of food and uh different items that are there available for you.
00:07:33.839 --> 00:07:35.759
Looking forward to seeing everyone there.
00:07:36.160 --> 00:07:43.040
All right, Bob, I appreciate all the work that the Human Relations Department does, and I appreciate you visiting me here on First of Main.
