WEBVTT
00:00:06.719 --> 00:00:22.000
Welcome to this week's episode of Fields Notes, where we take a deeper dive into sermon text, discuss matters of life and faith, and enjoy conversations around the table with fellow friends from the Fields.
00:00:25.760 --> 00:00:27.679
Well, welcome back to Fields Notes.
00:00:27.839 --> 00:00:35.520
This week on Fields Notes, we are entering a new, I don't know, era theme topic of sorts.
00:00:35.759 --> 00:00:35.920
Phase.
00:00:36.320 --> 00:00:37.600
Phase of our podcast.
00:00:38.560 --> 00:00:39.280
Series, maybe.
00:00:39.439 --> 00:00:39.759
I don't know.
00:00:40.159 --> 00:00:49.200
We are uh we're entering the summer months of the year, and we thought it would be fun to uh do some quasi-interviews with our uh mainly our staff members.
00:00:49.280 --> 00:00:51.359
Maybe it'll branch out to other people in our church too.
00:00:51.439 --> 00:00:53.280
We will see we'll see where it goes to.
00:00:53.359 --> 00:00:54.799
But uh could be you.
00:00:55.039 --> 00:00:56.320
Could be me at some point.
00:00:56.479 --> 00:00:56.799
I don't know.
00:00:57.280 --> 00:00:58.719
Could be you, you the listener.
00:00:59.600 --> 00:01:01.359
You sitting there right now, you might be on here.
00:01:01.759 --> 00:01:04.159
You listening may one day be on Field's notes.
00:01:04.239 --> 00:01:04.640
Who knows?
00:01:04.799 --> 00:01:13.040
Well, if you're looking at the title, somehow, in some way, it's indicating that we are interviewing or getting to know who Pastor Jeff Strickland is.
00:01:13.200 --> 00:01:15.280
Some would call him just Pastor Strickland.
00:01:16.079 --> 00:01:16.640
Not many.
00:01:16.879 --> 00:01:17.280
Not many.
00:01:17.519 --> 00:01:19.200
Not many, but Jeffrey.
00:01:19.359 --> 00:01:19.920
Or Jeffrey.
00:01:20.239 --> 00:01:21.120
That'd be my mom.
00:01:21.200 --> 00:01:22.079
Uh uh, Dr.
00:01:22.319 --> 00:01:22.560
J.
00:01:23.120 --> 00:01:24.000
That's my favorite.
00:01:24.079 --> 00:01:24.319
Yeah.
00:01:24.480 --> 00:01:29.280
Uh Strick, I think, was your maybe that was what I was known until I was probably 23.
00:01:29.680 --> 00:01:30.000
Wow.
00:01:30.159 --> 00:01:30.400
Yeah.
00:01:30.560 --> 00:01:31.519
It's been a while for that one.
00:01:31.760 --> 00:01:32.959
We might need to bring that one back.
00:01:33.040 --> 00:01:33.359
I don't know.
00:01:33.599 --> 00:01:34.560
I'd I'd love it.
00:01:34.879 --> 00:01:35.680
It still feels right.
00:01:35.920 --> 00:01:45.280
Well, hey, if you're listening, uh, we we just think it'd be helpful for uh people to get to know um in us, us in a sense, or in people on our staff and others in our church uh in that way.
00:01:45.359 --> 00:01:50.400
Uh sometimes as I talk to people about Fields notes, every uh first off, everyone's so encouraging.
00:01:50.480 --> 00:01:51.680
Thank you for being so encouraging.
00:01:51.760 --> 00:01:55.840
Uh I recognize you'd have you'd have opportunities maybe to not be in that, but you are.
00:01:55.920 --> 00:02:00.400
Uh, but a couple have brought up, man, it's been helpful to get to know people better when we did the Christmas one.
00:02:00.480 --> 00:02:02.799
They're like, oh, your wives were on there, it was so fun and that.
00:02:02.879 --> 00:02:10.240
And so we're gonna have some opportunities to do things like that for people to uh get to know um others in our church.
00:02:10.319 --> 00:02:14.560
Uh, we've done the uh Lay Elder Podcast, uh David Rawlson we did a podcast on.
00:02:14.639 --> 00:02:15.919
You can check those out as well.
00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:18.400
But today is Jeff's podcast.
00:02:18.479 --> 00:02:20.960
So we're gonna get to know a little bit more about the Jeff Strickland podcast.
00:02:21.120 --> 00:02:22.960
The Jeff Strickland podcast here.
00:02:23.039 --> 00:02:24.479
So get get get excited.
00:02:24.560 --> 00:02:27.599
If you're writing episode of the Jeff Strickland Podcast, who knows?
00:02:27.680 --> 00:02:29.280
Maybe it will maybe it'll boil over.
00:02:29.520 --> 00:02:32.479
Maybe everyone will be itching for more confident.
00:02:32.960 --> 00:02:33.599
Too long of an intro.
00:02:33.680 --> 00:02:34.240
We knew okay.
00:02:34.319 --> 00:02:36.960
Let's just Jeff, tell us all by yourself.
00:02:37.039 --> 00:02:37.919
Where are you from, Jeff?
00:02:38.080 --> 00:02:39.280
Where'd you grow up?
00:02:39.759 --> 00:02:40.479
Where are you from?
00:02:40.639 --> 00:02:40.879
Yeah.
00:02:41.039 --> 00:02:42.560
I grew up in Virginia.
00:02:42.639 --> 00:02:48.639
Uh, your town, Virginia, is where I was born and raised until fifth grade, moved to Crawfordsville, Indiana.
00:02:48.800 --> 00:02:50.560
Pretty much have lived in Indiana since.
00:02:50.800 --> 00:02:51.199
Very cool.
00:02:51.280 --> 00:02:52.639
Now, is Virginia the South?
00:02:52.719 --> 00:02:53.360
I know you say that.
00:02:53.520 --> 00:02:54.240
It is 100%.
00:02:54.560 --> 00:02:55.280
Okay, Virginia.
00:02:55.439 --> 00:02:55.919
A southerner.
00:02:56.240 --> 00:02:56.639
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:02:56.960 --> 00:02:59.199
Now, a different kind of South for sure.
00:02:59.280 --> 00:02:59.520
Yeah.
00:02:59.759 --> 00:03:00.159
Very cool.
00:03:00.400 --> 00:03:01.599
Tell us a little bit about your family.
00:03:01.759 --> 00:03:04.240
Now, I'm guessing most of us know, but what's family life?
00:03:04.719 --> 00:03:06.080
Yeah, my wife, Stephanie.
00:03:06.159 --> 00:03:09.919
Uh, we met in high school, high school sweethearts, got married.
00:03:10.080 --> 00:03:12.319
Um, then we have two boys.
00:03:12.479 --> 00:03:16.800
Our oldest is 11 Carson, our youngest is seven Knox.
00:03:17.199 --> 00:03:23.439
Um, both of them are in some ways little mini me's, and um, in some ways little mini stephs too.
00:03:23.520 --> 00:03:29.759
And so uh just a lot of fun, very much on a baseball field as often as we can be uh right now, but really sweet season.
00:03:29.919 --> 00:03:32.319
Thank goodness they're at least somewhat mini steffs too.
00:03:32.560 --> 00:03:34.000
We're all thankful for that.
00:03:34.960 --> 00:03:39.120
Jeff, tell us a little bit, maybe one of a more serious question, one a question from people excited about.
00:03:39.199 --> 00:03:41.120
Tell us a little bit about how you became a Christian.
00:03:41.280 --> 00:03:41.520
Yeah.
00:03:41.599 --> 00:03:53.280
So I actually um grew up in a Christian home and went to a Christian preschool uh at a local Baptist church in Virginia and really got to hear the gospel thankfully often.
00:03:53.520 --> 00:03:59.840
And um, when I was seven years old, uh I was in church on a Sunday, the gospel was preached.
00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:08.800
Uh, I recognized, I think probably for the first time uh at seven, that I was a sinner and uh and that I needed Jesus to save me.
00:04:08.960 --> 00:04:11.039
And uh that's probably all I recognized.
00:04:11.120 --> 00:04:13.680
That was the extent of it, but I knew those two things.
00:04:13.840 --> 00:04:18.160
Um back in the Baptists in the South, that meant you walked the aisle.
00:04:18.240 --> 00:04:21.360
Uh, so there'd be an altar call and you came forward, walked the aisle.
00:04:21.439 --> 00:04:22.399
So that's what I did.
00:04:22.560 --> 00:04:34.639
And uh met with my pastor probably three or four times in preparation to be baptized and was baptized as a believer probably, I don't know, a few months afterwards, uh, when I uh went forward.
00:04:34.800 --> 00:04:38.560
And um, and then really in some ways, uh, the Lord's been so kind.
00:04:38.639 --> 00:04:48.959
Um, I I tell people often that my story uh is a little bit more like the elder son in uh the parable that we'll be looking at in just a few weeks.
00:04:49.040 --> 00:04:59.600
Uh that I um I I've never really been that given over to like, you know, super like worldly living.
00:04:59.759 --> 00:05:02.639
Uh that's just never been that attractive to me.
00:05:02.720 --> 00:05:13.600
Uh, but pride, selfishness, um, self-centeredness, um, those sorts of things have been are so deeply rooted in my heart.
00:05:13.839 --> 00:05:22.079
And so I feel like from age seven on, the Lord has slowly and graciously been just ripping those things out.
00:05:22.240 --> 00:05:37.120
And um, and so there were certainly some really hard times and times in which uh, especially in high school for me, um, I really wanted to fit in and um and so felt like I put Jesus in some ways my life in Christ on the back burner.
00:05:37.199 --> 00:05:46.319
Uh when I was a sophomore, uh just finishing off my sophomore year in high school, I just remember thinking, uh, really crying out to the Lord for like a month.
00:05:46.560 --> 00:05:48.959
Like, I just want to live for you every day.
00:05:49.199 --> 00:05:50.800
Like, I want to do this.
00:05:50.959 --> 00:05:58.480
Um, like I want to know like what it what it looks like and means to actually walk as a Christian.
00:05:58.639 --> 00:06:00.720
Um, and so I went to an FCA camp.
00:06:00.800 --> 00:06:03.519
Fellowship Christian Athletes was huge to me uh growing up.
00:06:03.600 --> 00:06:09.040
And so I went to this FCA leaders' camp that summer, and I really think the Lord answered my prayer.
00:06:09.199 --> 00:06:17.439
Like, not that I walked perfect, but I understood maybe for a first time really what it meant and it looked like to just walk as a Christian.
00:06:17.600 --> 00:06:22.959
Um and so I came out of that summer and the Lord did a really encouraging work.
00:06:23.120 --> 00:06:27.759
I think that's part of the time when I began to have an aspiration to be a pastor, uh, to ministry.
00:06:27.839 --> 00:06:29.920
I don't think I would have thought of his pastoral necessarily.
00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:32.879
I think I would have thought of it as like working for FCA or something like that.
00:06:32.959 --> 00:06:34.240
But I came out of that summer.
00:06:34.399 --> 00:06:38.959
Steph will tell you, I that's when I met Steph, probably a month or so after that as well.
00:06:39.120 --> 00:06:44.399
Like we went to, we would have had church, Sunday school, church, Sunday night youth group.
00:06:44.480 --> 00:06:47.600
Uh we went Wednesday nights, we went to a Bible study.
00:06:47.759 --> 00:06:49.680
Friday nights, we went to a Bible study.
00:06:49.839 --> 00:06:52.000
Uh Saturday night, we went to a Bible study.
00:06:52.160 --> 00:07:01.439
We got together every single morning, 20 of us, uh, before church to do devotion or before school to do devotions together, uh, and then prayed together and then broke for the day.
00:07:01.519 --> 00:07:03.519
Um, we were super involved in FCA.
00:07:03.600 --> 00:07:10.480
So, I mean, I any opportunity I could find to read the Bible, talk with people about Jesus, um, I wanted.
00:07:10.639 --> 00:07:15.680
And uh, and so then that's when I, you know, decided to go to Taylor University, study Christian ministry.
00:07:15.920 --> 00:07:20.480
After that, went to set seminary to learn more theology, those sorts of things.
00:07:20.639 --> 00:07:35.920
Pastored for five years in uh Crawfordsville at the church I grew up in, went back to do a PhD, then went back to Crawfordsville to pastor for uh six years at Rot Point, and then um yeah, we planted the fields five years ago.
00:07:36.079 --> 00:07:40.079
So that's a maybe the end a little bit shorter, but that's the idea.
00:07:40.319 --> 00:07:41.040
Well, praise the Lord.
00:07:41.120 --> 00:07:43.680
Thanks for even just thanks for your vulnerability in that, Jeff.
00:07:43.759 --> 00:07:52.480
And uh praise the Lord that he saves sinners like us and um sanctifies us and um and is still doing so here now.
00:07:52.720 --> 00:07:53.600
I just want to give encouragement.
00:07:53.680 --> 00:07:58.319
If you're someone who got was a Christian when you were young, I used to think I had a terrible testimony.
00:07:58.560 --> 00:08:08.639
And uh the the fact that the Lord has kept me from age seven to now, um, I think is the greatest show of his grace and power that I can imagine.
00:08:08.800 --> 00:08:18.319
Um and and so I just I look back and go, oh no, the work that the Lord does to save someone middle of life later in life is so incredible.
00:08:18.720 --> 00:08:23.199
But the work to keep someone in Christ uh is just as incredible.
00:08:23.360 --> 00:08:25.519
So just be encouraged by whatever your testimony may be.
00:08:26.240 --> 00:08:26.639
That's good.
00:08:27.040 --> 00:08:33.440
Jeff, tell us something that most people in our church wouldn't know about you.
00:08:34.960 --> 00:08:35.360
I know.
00:08:35.519 --> 00:08:38.080
I feel like I'm I'm like I'm a pretty open person.
00:08:38.159 --> 00:08:38.879
So I'm trying to do that.
00:08:39.039 --> 00:08:41.759
You like to use your embarrassing life stories as sermon illustration.
00:08:41.919 --> 00:08:42.159
I do.
00:08:42.240 --> 00:08:42.960
I like to bring that out.
00:08:43.279 --> 00:08:44.720
I'm earing the hair.
00:08:44.960 --> 00:08:45.120
Yeah.
00:08:45.279 --> 00:08:51.600
I did do improv comedy in uh at Taylor, which I'm not sure that a lot of people have you used that maybe?
00:08:51.759 --> 00:08:52.240
I don't know.
00:08:52.399 --> 00:08:53.440
I that's part of the thing too.
00:08:54.080 --> 00:08:54.399
Has he used that?
00:08:54.799 --> 00:08:55.039
Go with it.
00:08:55.120 --> 00:08:56.320
I was also I would say he's good.
00:08:56.559 --> 00:09:03.440
I was also in show choir for four years in uh high school and and did four musicals.
00:09:03.600 --> 00:09:05.840
One I uh worked A V.
00:09:05.919 --> 00:09:10.799
Um, so I did I, you know, I feel like I have um like I have a lot of interests.
00:09:10.879 --> 00:09:17.759
Like I played football, basketball, baseball, tennis, and swam at some point in time, varsity in uh high school.
00:09:17.840 --> 00:09:19.440
I technically JV football.
00:09:19.600 --> 00:09:22.799
And um, and then did a bunch of musicals and things like that.
00:09:23.279 --> 00:09:27.120
We have Detroit Bolton of uh of Crawford's Hill High School there.
00:09:27.200 --> 00:09:28.559
That's a high school musical record.
00:09:28.720 --> 00:09:30.639
Okay, I was like, I don't know what that is.
00:09:30.960 --> 00:09:32.639
Most people listening will understand.
00:09:32.799 --> 00:09:34.480
Yeah, I'm like, I don't know who that is.
00:09:34.879 --> 00:09:36.080
Clash of the worlds there.
00:09:36.159 --> 00:09:36.480
Okay.
00:09:36.799 --> 00:09:37.679
Very cool, Jeff.
00:09:37.759 --> 00:09:41.600
Wow, any uh any roles that we would know, like any plays that we would know that you're in?
00:09:41.759 --> 00:09:43.360
Uh I was in Bye Bye Birdie.
00:09:43.440 --> 00:09:49.200
Um, and Bye bye Birdie is a pretty well-known musical, and I was like this huge nerd.
00:09:49.360 --> 00:09:51.440
Um, and so that was Hugo F.
00:09:51.600 --> 00:09:52.240
Peabody.
00:09:52.320 --> 00:09:53.759
Doesn't that sound like a nerdy name?
00:09:54.240 --> 00:09:54.960
It's the character I played.
00:09:55.279 --> 00:10:00.960
I played a tap dancing gangster in uh and I had to do a rap in my senior year.
00:10:01.120 --> 00:10:04.000
So those are we need to recover some footage of this there.
00:10:04.080 --> 00:10:05.360
That would be that would be quite fun.
00:10:05.519 --> 00:10:06.639
Yeah, maybe John and Judy.
00:10:06.879 --> 00:10:07.759
John help us out with that.
00:10:08.080 --> 00:10:08.399
Come on.
00:10:08.480 --> 00:10:11.919
I'm sure it's out there, guys, but I'd rather it not come out.
00:10:12.639 --> 00:10:13.840
Oh, we would rather it come out.
00:10:14.080 --> 00:10:14.480
I'm sure.
00:10:14.639 --> 00:10:16.960
Uh uh last question I had, then Brain has some questions after this.
00:10:17.039 --> 00:10:18.720
Well, I have some questions at the end too.
00:10:18.879 --> 00:10:21.279
Uh, maybe so this is within then the last four years.
00:10:21.440 --> 00:10:23.279
What's something about planting a church?
00:10:23.360 --> 00:10:29.120
Uh being the lead planting pastor of a church, I don't know how you you phrase that, uh, that you didn't expect.
00:10:29.279 --> 00:10:33.679
Maybe the most surprising part uh to you about planting the fields church.
00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:38.240
Yeah, you know, in some ways that anyone would come, perhaps?
00:10:38.639 --> 00:10:40.639
Yeah, I mean no, for sure.
00:10:40.799 --> 00:10:41.840
Like that's what I was gonna say.
00:10:41.919 --> 00:10:43.759
Like just how gracious God is.
00:10:43.919 --> 00:10:46.879
Uh, you know, Steph and I are not risk takers.
00:10:47.039 --> 00:10:50.080
We're not like, let's just jump out and see what happens.
00:10:50.159 --> 00:10:52.399
And church planting feels a little bit like that.
00:10:52.480 --> 00:10:59.440
And so I don't think either one this was an endeavor that either one of us were like, oh yeah, like we've been preparing our whole lives for this.
00:10:59.679 --> 00:11:07.440
Um, it it very much has, but but the Lord has shown just how uh gracious and good and he provides.
00:11:07.600 --> 00:11:16.240
I mean, we I feel like both Steph and I would say that our faith has grown greatly um over the last four or five years, just seeing the Lord's hand.
00:11:16.320 --> 00:11:21.200
Uh, I also think probably the thing preaching was the thing I was most scared about coming in.
00:11:21.279 --> 00:11:26.159
Um, I think this might surprise people too a little bit, maybe just because I preach most Sundays.
00:11:26.240 --> 00:11:28.080
Uh preaching's really hard for me.
00:11:28.159 --> 00:11:29.759
I I never thought I would preach.
00:11:29.840 --> 00:11:31.600
Uh I never took a preaching class.
00:11:31.759 --> 00:11:34.879
I really didn't preach much at all until I was probably like 35.
00:11:35.200 --> 00:11:40.320
Um, and uh, and really that was hesitantly um sort of forced to do so.
00:11:40.480 --> 00:11:45.039
And uh, and so I was really nervous coming into the fields, like, can I preach every Sunday?
00:11:45.200 --> 00:11:48.799
And and a little bit like, will anybody ever like come?
00:11:49.200 --> 00:11:51.440
Like, like that's I mean, real I mean for real.
00:11:51.519 --> 00:11:57.200
And so um the Lord's just been, I mean, we're such a gracious people that are just so encouraging to me in that regard.
00:11:57.360 --> 00:12:01.519
And um, and and that has been sweeter than I thought it was gonna be.
00:12:01.679 --> 00:12:02.399
It really has.
00:12:02.559 --> 00:12:09.200
I mean, I I was I was honestly, I was pretty terrified um of getting up every Sunday, and the Lord has just been so sweet.
00:12:09.360 --> 00:12:11.759
So you couldn't tell at all from our part.
00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:15.440
Yeah, Braden's got some questions for your preaching and all the efforts that you give.
00:12:15.519 --> 00:12:16.159
So it's great.
00:12:16.559 --> 00:12:18.080
We are Brain's got some questions for you now.
00:12:18.159 --> 00:12:19.360
Yeah, maybe harder questions?
00:12:19.440 --> 00:12:20.080
Are there harder questions?
00:12:20.399 --> 00:12:20.960
Well, we'll see.
00:12:22.240 --> 00:12:23.120
We'll see what Jeff thinks.
00:12:23.360 --> 00:12:25.519
Braden is less nice than I am, so they might be some harder questions.
00:12:25.679 --> 00:12:27.440
Oh, yeah, I left these off the script for sure.
00:12:27.919 --> 00:12:28.720
That's great.
00:12:28.960 --> 00:12:29.919
Just coming at.
00:12:30.480 --> 00:12:34.639
Uh where's the last place on earth you'd want to live?
00:12:34.960 --> 00:12:37.519
Place that you would hate to be.
00:12:37.759 --> 00:12:38.720
And then you can flip it.
00:12:38.799 --> 00:12:39.519
Where's the best place?
00:12:39.600 --> 00:12:43.200
Besides Westfield, Indiana, where would you want to really live?
00:12:43.519 --> 00:12:46.559
Yeah, the last place on earth I'd want to live.
00:12:46.720 --> 00:12:57.200
I mean, I'm sure there's some places out there that I just don't know how terrible they are to live, but maybe some places that I can like think of pretty.
00:12:57.279 --> 00:13:00.000
I mean, anything that's just has no cities.
00:13:00.159 --> 00:13:11.360
So I'm thinking of like Nebraska um or like a Arkansas, like some of these places, I like city culture, life, things like that.
00:13:11.600 --> 00:13:18.480
Um, you know, there just be, I would think some areas that are like very flat and which I everybody's like, this is Indiana.
00:13:18.639 --> 00:13:19.840
Um, I love Indiana.
00:13:19.919 --> 00:13:23.279
I think the mountains of Indiana.
00:13:23.600 --> 00:13:24.720
I don't know that I care.
00:13:24.799 --> 00:13:35.200
I like mountains and I like water and things like that, oceans, lakes, things, but I think I I would want cities and culture and college towns and things like that.
00:13:35.360 --> 00:13:39.200
So I think places that are that in my mind are just void of that.
00:13:39.360 --> 00:13:43.679
I think anything that is super, super humid, I hate humidity.
00:13:43.840 --> 00:13:50.639
Uh so like we've gone down to like I love Alabama is a sweet place, but man, it is so humid.
00:13:50.720 --> 00:13:53.519
I had to like take a water break playing mini golf one time.
00:13:53.759 --> 00:13:56.320
Uh so I mean it's just I'm not interested in that.
00:13:56.399 --> 00:13:56.720
Yeah.
00:13:56.960 --> 00:13:57.519
It's great.
00:13:57.600 --> 00:13:58.159
It's great.
00:13:58.320 --> 00:14:01.600
Uh, biggest pet peeve and why.
00:14:02.720 --> 00:14:03.440
Oh man.
00:14:03.600 --> 00:14:04.639
I don't, I don't know.
00:14:04.799 --> 00:14:08.879
Man, I almost wish Steph was here because she could probably tell me what yours is.
00:14:09.120 --> 00:14:12.080
What my biggest uh pet peeve is.
00:14:12.240 --> 00:14:16.159
Um I don't know that I have a ton of like pet peeves.
00:14:16.320 --> 00:14:20.000
I do think, and I've even realized the last podcast we recorded, I did this to Joe.
00:14:20.159 --> 00:14:26.080
I think I do care a lot about grammar and spelling and pronunciation and things like that.
00:14:26.240 --> 00:14:29.840
Um so I um I but it's not a pet peeve.
00:14:29.919 --> 00:14:31.919
Like it, but it I can't- You are very gracious in it.
00:14:32.080 --> 00:14:33.039
Well, I can't not correct.
00:14:33.440 --> 00:14:39.840
It's pretty much it's pretty much me who I get corrected by Jeff and my wife, who just always correct me on the things I say or do you think.
00:14:40.159 --> 00:14:43.919
Both of us are probably very wired to care about those sorts of things.
00:14:44.159 --> 00:14:48.639
Um so but I don't know if it's a pet peeve, but honestly, sometimes too.
00:14:48.720 --> 00:14:51.919
I have to put like um I don't, yeah.
00:14:52.080 --> 00:14:56.240
I feel like my boys sometimes, I'm sure, could tell you what my pet peeves are too.
00:14:56.399 --> 00:15:01.440
Like any sort of like tapping, like can things like that will, yeah, they'll get to me.
00:15:01.519 --> 00:15:01.679
Yeah.
00:15:01.840 --> 00:15:02.000
Yeah.
00:15:02.080 --> 00:15:03.039
But I probably do those too.
00:15:03.120 --> 00:15:05.519
So things that Joe can be doing the rest of the episode now.
00:15:05.679 --> 00:15:06.399
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:15:06.720 --> 00:15:15.440
Uh what is something that is gonna be maybe like one thing in life or something you could think back to that you're like, man, I wish I could do that over.
00:15:15.600 --> 00:15:17.360
I wish I could get a redo on that.
00:15:17.519 --> 00:15:31.519
You may I mean I've done that a huge regret, but you're like, oh man, if I could get to redo something that was like significant or yeah, and this is probably this this probably feels too like Christian, but uh I just wish I knew how important the church was earlier.
00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:45.919
And I think early on in my ministry too, and I'm really thankful for how the Lord has worked, but I just I don't think I really understood what it meant to be a part of a faithful church and what a faithful church was and and those sorts of things.
00:15:46.080 --> 00:15:52.320
And I just look back at my college career, I really didn't plug into a really good local church.
00:15:52.559 --> 00:16:16.799
Um, I just I think the church was a fringe in my Christian life for a while and and maybe the influence of FCA and some of those things, but I just wish I had a if I could go back to being a like understanding the importance of church and digging into a local church, which sounds so like on brand for a church planter, but I just am like, oh man, I think I wish I could go back and do that.
00:16:16.960 --> 00:16:18.080
Yeah, yeah, that's good.
00:16:18.240 --> 00:16:20.320
I would probably resonate with that in some ways too.
00:16:20.399 --> 00:16:30.480
But um what's uh what's something that you like many people enjoy or like or have done that you would be like, I would never be interested in doing something like that?
00:16:30.720 --> 00:16:42.799
Anything with heights, so roller coasters, skydiving, uh like rock climbing, like inside, like the little rock climbing wall that goes up 25 feet, no problem.
00:16:43.120 --> 00:16:43.600
I think.
00:16:43.759 --> 00:16:47.519
Um, but any of those things I'm I'm just not interested in.
00:16:47.759 --> 00:16:53.600
Really, your run club on whatever, you know, things like like I have no interest in running um at all.
00:16:54.720 --> 00:16:58.639
Or anything that really has anything to do with my feet, soccer, kickball.
00:16:58.799 --> 00:17:00.080
Like, I don't like any of those things.
00:17:00.240 --> 00:17:04.480
Um so and I think a lot of people do, and you know, I'm I'm glad for them.
00:17:04.720 --> 00:17:05.119
Good for you.
00:17:05.200 --> 00:17:05.920
Yes, right.
00:17:07.039 --> 00:17:11.519
Um couple uh maybe, you know, maybe better, deeper questions to think about.
00:17:11.759 --> 00:17:13.519
Uh well, maybe quicker one.
00:17:13.680 --> 00:17:17.200
What would be the title of your next book and what would it be about?
00:17:18.000 --> 00:17:18.400
Mr.
00:17:18.559 --> 00:17:19.279
Author Dr.
00:17:19.440 --> 00:17:20.559
Jeff Strickland.
00:17:20.799 --> 00:17:20.960
Yeah.
00:17:21.200 --> 00:17:23.200
Is there an is there a next book?
00:17:23.599 --> 00:17:24.319
Maybe.
00:17:24.559 --> 00:17:27.200
Um I'm I I think there is.
00:17:27.359 --> 00:17:28.640
I don't know timing-wise.
00:17:28.720 --> 00:17:31.839
I'm I'm sort of something we talked about even as elders.
00:17:31.920 --> 00:17:33.119
Uh, you know, it takes a long time.
00:17:33.200 --> 00:17:34.240
It takes a lot of work to write a book.
00:17:34.400 --> 00:17:34.640
For sure.
00:17:34.799 --> 00:17:38.799
And so just trying to figure out whether it's wise to start tackling something like that right now.
00:17:38.880 --> 00:17:42.160
And uh my uh conclusion right now has been it is not wise.
00:17:42.319 --> 00:17:43.359
So but it's in my mind.
00:17:43.599 --> 00:17:44.400
That's the title of the book.
00:17:45.920 --> 00:17:50.400
Uh I think I would write something on joy or heaven from the Puritans.
00:17:50.480 --> 00:17:53.680
Uh, I've got both of those things uh kind of in my mind.
00:17:53.839 --> 00:18:00.799
I really think um it'd be really helpful for Christians to understand what real joy is, um biblical Christian joy.
00:18:00.960 --> 00:18:13.119
And then I I think I would love to, yeah, to write a book from the Puritans, uh, not just what heaven is, but how we meditate on heaven, how we think of heaven, why heaven matters, uh, things like that.
00:18:13.200 --> 00:18:16.720
So those are two sort of books that I think would be um in the mix.
00:18:16.799 --> 00:18:19.200
I I don't I assume they will title them.
00:18:19.440 --> 00:18:20.559
That's usually what happens with me.
00:18:20.720 --> 00:18:23.839
I had a great title for uh my dissertation, and they were like, nope.
00:18:24.160 --> 00:18:25.359
So what's that title?
00:18:25.440 --> 00:18:26.000
I kinda wanna know.
00:18:26.240 --> 00:18:31.440
I think it was too it it felt like it was gonna be too encouraging, and they were like, this is an academic book.
00:18:31.680 --> 00:18:35.039
Um we don't want people to pick it up and think it's gonna be really interesting.
00:18:35.200 --> 00:18:37.200
I think that's they didn't say it that way, but that's kind of how they said it.
00:18:37.920 --> 00:18:39.680
I think I it's called the foundation of joy.
00:18:39.759 --> 00:18:46.240
I think I had something in there like the wellspring of joy, um, something like that that make it a little bit, but yeah, it didn't go.
00:18:46.480 --> 00:18:47.440
Not not not it.
00:18:47.599 --> 00:18:48.319
They weren't having it.
00:18:48.559 --> 00:18:49.200
Nope.
00:18:49.440 --> 00:18:59.279
Um, what is a like normal, small, easy way that people in our church uh could do uh to encourage one another?
00:18:59.680 --> 00:19:07.680
What's a small, simple way, small step, maybe even this Sunday or this week, that someone could do to encourage another brother or sister in Christ.
00:19:08.319 --> 00:19:12.720
You know, I feel like we are um longing for connection.
00:19:12.960 --> 00:19:29.599
And so I I just think if we as a church regularly sort of just every time, and I think the spirit does this often, every time we have someone who comes to mind in our church that we could just be like, oh, I just want to encourage them, I want to send them like this was really helpful to me.
00:19:29.839 --> 00:19:32.400
I just think we need to let people know those things more often.
00:19:32.559 --> 00:19:36.079
I think a lot of times we're like, oh, I should have let them know, and then we never do.
00:19:36.240 --> 00:19:38.880
Um and I just think not letting those things pass.
00:19:39.119 --> 00:19:44.000
And then I think secondly, um, on Sunday mornings, I was usually talking about this at Fields 101.
00:19:44.079 --> 00:19:54.480
I I just think if we came into Sunday mornings going, I want to drink so deeply of God's word this morning, but I also want to be used.
00:19:54.720 --> 00:20:07.680
Like I just I I I want to I don't want to leave this Sunday morning without praying for, encouraging, um you know, telling someone of God's grace, you know, the those sorts of things.
00:20:07.759 --> 00:20:11.119
I I just want to make sure I do that at least once every Sunday.
00:20:11.200 --> 00:20:14.319
I I just think if if we were doing some things like that, I think that'd be huge.
00:20:14.960 --> 00:20:18.000
I got one more, then we can transition to some rapid fire Joe.
00:20:18.160 --> 00:20:19.119
Uh we're doing that.
00:20:19.200 --> 00:20:29.359
But um maybe what's a spiritual discipline that you want to grow in, or one that's underrated that you're like, man, I I would love to myself, other people spend more time doing this thing.
00:20:29.440 --> 00:20:35.279
I think we probably think about the easy ones, Bible reading, prayer, but other ones that you think about, or maybe just growing in, that sort of thing.
00:20:36.000 --> 00:20:39.200
I so badly want to memorize scripture, and I'm trying.
00:20:39.359 --> 00:20:46.720
Like I'm actually trying to do this with Colossians as we prepare to preach it, and I honestly failing pretty miserably.
00:20:46.880 --> 00:20:56.640
Um, so I just think memorization is so if you can like actually literally store God's word in you, like how great is that?
00:20:56.799 --> 00:21:04.000
Um, so I had the opportunity when I was in seminary to memorize the entire book of James for a class, and I still have passages from James.
00:21:04.079 --> 00:21:06.079
I don't have it memorized anymore, but I kind of do.
00:21:06.240 --> 00:21:07.119
Like it's just in there.
00:21:07.279 --> 00:21:07.839
It's kind of there, yeah.
00:21:08.000 --> 00:21:09.119
Yeah, and it's so helpful.
00:21:09.200 --> 00:21:10.960
And so I'm like, why don't I do that more often?
00:21:11.119 --> 00:21:17.920
So I think scripture memorization is like the most overlooked and I think just practically helpful thing for Christians.
00:21:18.240 --> 00:21:18.640
That's great.
00:21:18.880 --> 00:21:19.119
Yeah.
00:21:19.599 --> 00:21:20.000
That's great.
00:21:20.079 --> 00:21:22.960
Some rapid fire questions for you, Jeff, to close us off here.
00:21:23.359 --> 00:21:26.640
At a coffee shop, what's your normal coffee order?
00:21:27.200 --> 00:21:33.200
So I only drink decaf, which is already gonna make some people leave the church or be very disappointed.
00:21:33.440 --> 00:21:37.200
Um, I uh I would get a decaf quortado.
00:21:37.359 --> 00:21:40.480
Well, for us those listening, you know uh what's a cortado?
00:21:40.720 --> 00:21:44.880
Cortado is equal parts espresso and steamed milk.
00:21:45.119 --> 00:21:48.160
Um so it almost looks it's really small.
00:21:48.319 --> 00:21:50.640
It's probably like four ounces.
00:21:50.799 --> 00:21:54.559
Um so very, very small, but it's it's just really, really good.
00:21:54.640 --> 00:21:59.920
If you ever want to know if a coffee shop is legit, the de the the cortado don't have to be the cortado.
00:22:01.039 --> 00:22:06.640
If the cortado is good, it's a it's a if they know what a cortado is, that's that they better know that.
00:22:06.799 --> 00:22:09.519
And then if it's good, then you know you're you're on the right.
00:22:09.920 --> 00:22:12.799
Well, if it's not four ounces, that's that's that's a way to tell you.
00:22:14.079 --> 00:22:14.880
That's not a cortado.
00:22:15.039 --> 00:22:17.200
If they don't know what it is, they don't give you a cortado, they would know.
00:22:17.359 --> 00:22:26.160
But I also feel like it is like one of the best ways to really get a full good taste of espresso coffee, that sort of thing.
00:22:26.319 --> 00:22:26.480
Yeah.
00:22:26.640 --> 00:22:30.319
I thought is maybe I'm just thinking now, is maybe a pet peeve of yours bad coffee?
00:22:30.400 --> 00:22:30.799
Would that be it?
00:22:30.960 --> 00:22:31.839
Would that be in the realm?
00:22:32.079 --> 00:22:32.720
Yeah.
00:22:33.839 --> 00:22:34.640
Well, you're charitable.
00:22:35.119 --> 00:22:36.160
I'm charitable to that.
00:22:36.319 --> 00:22:38.640
I like to mock people, but then I drink decaf.
00:22:38.960 --> 00:22:41.200
So it's just one of those where you just feel so silly.
00:22:41.440 --> 00:22:41.759
Very fun.
00:22:41.920 --> 00:22:42.480
That was too late.
00:22:42.559 --> 00:22:43.359
That was not rapid fire.
00:22:43.440 --> 00:22:43.759
My bad.
00:22:43.839 --> 00:22:43.920
Yeah.
00:22:44.079 --> 00:22:44.960
More rapid fire.
00:22:45.039 --> 00:22:47.279
What's your least favorite food?
00:22:47.839 --> 00:22:49.440
I mean any vegetable.
00:22:49.680 --> 00:22:50.079
Wow.
00:22:50.240 --> 00:22:50.720
Realistic.
00:22:50.960 --> 00:22:51.119
Okay.
00:22:51.279 --> 00:22:51.359
Yeah.
00:22:52.079 --> 00:22:53.359
Favorite ice cream flavor.
00:22:53.599 --> 00:23:02.559
Uh, probably mint chocolate chip or mint Oreo, something with mint in there, or the uh blackberry chip at Graters.
00:23:03.039 --> 00:23:03.839
Graters, super good.
00:23:04.240 --> 00:23:08.799
Anything at the book of the Bible that you would be most excited about preaching.
00:23:11.119 --> 00:23:14.880
Man, that is that's uh it's whatever's coming up most of the time.
00:23:15.039 --> 00:23:19.519
But I I would have loved at some point in time, I'd all have preached through Romans.
00:23:19.680 --> 00:23:21.759
But I want to get to where I think I can actually do it well.
00:23:21.920 --> 00:23:26.720
I think you said that's what you were like, I once I'll become a good preacher, then I'll once I get we're like Jeff, you're a great preacher.
00:23:26.799 --> 00:23:27.119
Come on.
00:23:27.200 --> 00:23:27.519
Yeah.
00:23:27.759 --> 00:23:29.039
Not to Roman standards, yeah.
00:23:29.279 --> 00:23:32.240
But for the Bible, you would be least excited about preaching.
00:23:32.400 --> 00:23:33.279
Are we allowed to ask that?
00:23:33.359 --> 00:23:34.160
Is that okay to ask?
00:23:34.319 --> 00:23:35.440
That seems like a tough question.
00:23:35.759 --> 00:23:37.200
It's a tough question, but I don't know.
00:23:37.279 --> 00:23:38.000
I'd go.
00:23:38.559 --> 00:23:42.319
Yeah, I'm I mean, uh honestly, my worst experience of a proverbs.
00:23:42.400 --> 00:23:45.839
Uh I mean, I just not big I love Proverbs, so helpful.
00:23:46.079 --> 00:23:47.839
Preaching it is just like, I don't know what to do.
00:23:48.000 --> 00:23:48.640
That would be unique.
00:23:48.720 --> 00:23:49.519
Yeah, it's so tough.
00:23:49.839 --> 00:23:50.240
Be unique.
00:23:50.319 --> 00:23:53.039
Uh favorite sport, baseball.
00:23:53.359 --> 00:23:57.039
In light of that, what what's your life walk-up song?
00:23:57.440 --> 00:23:59.920
Oh man, we talk about this so often.
00:24:00.240 --> 00:24:02.720
Um it shifts so often.
00:24:02.880 --> 00:24:07.440
I I I would if I was walking up right now, I'd walk up to Andy Minio's You Can't Stop Me.
00:24:07.920 --> 00:24:10.160
Uh would be probably what I would walk up to.
00:24:10.400 --> 00:24:11.119
Get you ready to go.
00:24:11.200 --> 00:24:11.440
Yeah, yeah.
00:24:11.680 --> 00:24:12.240
Hit a home run.
00:24:12.400 --> 00:24:12.559
Yeah.
00:24:12.640 --> 00:24:12.799
Yeah.
00:24:13.119 --> 00:24:15.440
I mean, for me, that a single over the second base of its head.
00:24:15.599 --> 00:24:16.079
That's a home run.
00:24:16.319 --> 00:24:17.519
Maybe double if you go fast.
00:24:18.000 --> 00:24:18.480
Probably not.
00:24:18.960 --> 00:24:20.079
Come to run club.
00:24:21.200 --> 00:24:22.559
I'll steal second.
00:24:22.960 --> 00:24:23.680
Last question I have.
00:24:23.759 --> 00:24:24.720
I don't know if Braden has more.
00:24:24.880 --> 00:24:27.440
Favorite book that everyone should read?
00:24:27.599 --> 00:24:29.279
I think the Bible doesn't count in this.
00:24:29.359 --> 00:24:30.160
Is that right, Braden?
00:24:30.400 --> 00:24:30.559
Yeah.
00:24:30.720 --> 00:24:30.960
Yeah.
00:24:31.200 --> 00:24:33.119
Uh I think everybody should read Mere Christianity.
00:24:33.279 --> 00:24:33.920
Mere Christianity.
00:24:34.799 --> 00:24:35.599
Yes, Lewis.
00:24:35.920 --> 00:24:38.000
Yeah, either one of those are yeah.
00:24:38.400 --> 00:24:38.720
Huge.
00:24:38.880 --> 00:24:40.000
Uh Pilgrim's Progress.
00:24:40.079 --> 00:24:41.680
There's so many, but uh, Mere Christianity.
00:24:41.839 --> 00:24:42.319
Favorite book.
00:24:42.480 --> 00:24:43.119
Mere Christianity.
00:24:43.359 --> 00:24:44.559
Braden, any other questions for James?
00:24:44.799 --> 00:24:45.279
I got one more.
00:24:45.440 --> 00:24:46.559
Uh superpower.
00:24:46.720 --> 00:24:49.599
What's a what would be a superpower that you would pick?
00:24:50.240 --> 00:24:55.440
What would be my what would be I think I I honestly I would love, I don't know, is that true?
00:24:55.599 --> 00:24:59.440
I mean, probably to fly, even though I'm afraid of heights.
00:24:59.519 --> 00:25:04.400
But I think if I was in control and I knew that I'm like, I'm gonna be fine, I think it would be to fly.
00:25:04.480 --> 00:25:05.839
I think flying would be awesome.
00:25:06.160 --> 00:25:07.039
Get places pretty fast.
00:25:07.200 --> 00:25:09.039
It'd be I could get places really, really quick.
00:25:09.119 --> 00:25:09.759
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:25:09.839 --> 00:25:11.839
I and it would just be what cool views.
00:25:11.920 --> 00:25:15.119
And it's gotta be so like just feels freeing.
00:25:15.359 --> 00:25:16.559
Like, just I don't know.
00:25:16.640 --> 00:25:17.680
I think flying would be it.
00:25:18.160 --> 00:25:18.880
Yeah, that's great.
00:25:19.039 --> 00:25:20.640
Those are the questions you passed, Jeff.
00:25:20.720 --> 00:25:25.839
We um, Jeff, we're so thankful for you and all you do to love us, Braden and I especially are around you often.
00:25:25.920 --> 00:25:28.400
So we see you often, but our church is around you.
00:25:28.559 --> 00:25:29.519
We love you, Jeff.
00:25:29.680 --> 00:25:34.559
We are I'm so sure that being a lead pastor of a church is there's so many difficulties.
00:25:34.799 --> 00:25:36.400
You balance everything so well, Jeff.
00:25:36.480 --> 00:25:37.680
We're so thankful for all you do.
00:25:37.759 --> 00:25:41.440
You pour yourself out for the good of us, the glory of Christ.
00:25:41.599 --> 00:25:42.559
We are so thankful.
00:25:42.640 --> 00:25:43.599
So absolutely true.
00:25:43.759 --> 00:25:44.640
Yeah, thanks, Jeff.
00:25:44.799 --> 00:25:53.680
It is the sweetest privilege uh that I know um outside of being married to my wife, being in Christ to pastor the fields is is amazing.
00:25:53.839 --> 00:25:54.720
So thanks, brothers.
00:25:54.880 --> 00:25:55.680
We're thankful for you, Jeff.
00:25:55.759 --> 00:25:57.119
We're signing off for Fields Notes.
00:25:57.200 --> 00:26:00.880
I don't know who will be I'm not sure who will be next, but there will be more to come.
00:26:01.200 --> 00:26:02.240
One of the two guys I'm looking at.
00:26:02.400 --> 00:26:04.079
At some point, I feel pretty confident about that.
00:26:04.240 --> 00:26:05.680
At some point, we'll be on here as well.
00:26:05.920 --> 00:26:07.680
All right, we're signing off for Fields Notes.
00:26:07.839 --> 00:26:08.400
See ya.
00:00:06.719 --> 00:00:22.000
Welcome to this week's episode of Fields Notes, where we take a deeper dive into sermon text, discuss matters of life and faith, and enjoy conversations around the table with fellow friends from the Fields.
00:00:25.760 --> 00:00:27.679
Well, welcome back to Fields Notes.
00:00:27.839 --> 00:00:35.520
This week on Fields Notes, we are entering a new, I don't know, era theme topic of sorts.
00:00:35.759 --> 00:00:35.920
Phase.
00:00:36.320 --> 00:00:37.600
Phase of our podcast.
00:00:38.560 --> 00:00:39.280
Series, maybe.
00:00:39.439 --> 00:00:39.759
I don't know.
00:00:40.159 --> 00:00:49.200
We are uh we're entering the summer months of the year, and we thought it would be fun to uh do some quasi-interviews with our uh mainly our staff members.
00:00:49.280 --> 00:00:51.359
Maybe it'll branch out to other people in our church too.
00:00:51.439 --> 00:00:53.280
We will see we'll see where it goes to.
00:00:53.359 --> 00:00:54.799
But uh could be you.
00:00:55.039 --> 00:00:56.320
Could be me at some point.
00:00:56.479 --> 00:00:56.799
I don't know.
00:00:57.280 --> 00:00:58.719
Could be you, you the listener.
00:00:59.600 --> 00:01:01.359
You sitting there right now, you might be on here.
00:01:01.759 --> 00:01:04.159
You listening may one day be on Field's notes.
00:01:04.239 --> 00:01:04.640
Who knows?
00:01:04.799 --> 00:01:13.040
Well, if you're looking at the title, somehow, in some way, it's indicating that we are interviewing or getting to know who Pastor Jeff Strickland is.
00:01:13.200 --> 00:01:15.280
Some would call him just Pastor Strickland.
00:01:16.079 --> 00:01:16.640
Not many.
00:01:16.879 --> 00:01:17.280
Not many.
00:01:17.519 --> 00:01:19.200
Not many, but Jeffrey.
00:01:19.359 --> 00:01:19.920
Or Jeffrey.
00:01:20.239 --> 00:01:21.120
That'd be my mom.
00:01:21.200 --> 00:01:22.079
Uh uh, Dr.
00:01:22.319 --> 00:01:22.560
J.
00:01:23.120 --> 00:01:24.000
That's my favorite.
00:01:24.079 --> 00:01:24.319
Yeah.
00:01:24.480 --> 00:01:29.280
Uh Strick, I think, was your maybe that was what I was known until I was probably 23.
00:01:29.680 --> 00:01:30.000
Wow.
00:01:30.159 --> 00:01:30.400
Yeah.
00:01:30.560 --> 00:01:31.519
It's been a while for that one.
00:01:31.760 --> 00:01:32.959
We might need to bring that one back.
00:01:33.040 --> 00:01:33.359
I don't know.
00:01:33.599 --> 00:01:34.560
I'd I'd love it.
00:01:34.879 --> 00:01:35.680
It still feels right.
00:01:35.920 --> 00:01:45.280
Well, hey, if you're listening, uh, we we just think it'd be helpful for uh people to get to know um in us, us in a sense, or in people on our staff and others in our church uh in that way.
00:01:45.359 --> 00:01:50.400
Uh sometimes as I talk to people about Fields notes, every uh first off, everyone's so encouraging.
00:01:50.480 --> 00:01:51.680
Thank you for being so encouraging.
00:01:51.760 --> 00:01:55.840
Uh I recognize you'd have you'd have opportunities maybe to not be in that, but you are.
00:01:55.920 --> 00:02:00.400
Uh, but a couple have brought up, man, it's been helpful to get to know people better when we did the Christmas one.
00:02:00.480 --> 00:02:02.799
They're like, oh, your wives were on there, it was so fun and that.
00:02:02.879 --> 00:02:10.240
And so we're gonna have some opportunities to do things like that for people to uh get to know um others in our church.
00:02:10.319 --> 00:02:14.560
Uh, we've done the uh Lay Elder Podcast, uh David Rawlson we did a podcast on.
00:02:14.639 --> 00:02:15.919
You can check those out as well.
00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:18.400
But today is Jeff's podcast.
00:02:18.479 --> 00:02:20.960
So we're gonna get to know a little bit more about the Jeff Strickland podcast.
00:02:21.120 --> 00:02:22.960
The Jeff Strickland podcast here.
00:02:23.039 --> 00:02:24.479
So get get get excited.
00:02:24.560 --> 00:02:27.599
If you're writing episode of the Jeff Strickland Podcast, who knows?
00:02:27.680 --> 00:02:29.280
Maybe it will maybe it'll boil over.
00:02:29.520 --> 00:02:32.479
Maybe everyone will be itching for more confident.
00:02:32.960 --> 00:02:33.599
Too long of an intro.
00:02:33.680 --> 00:02:34.240
We knew okay.
00:02:34.319 --> 00:02:36.960
Let's just Jeff, tell us all by yourself.
00:02:37.039 --> 00:02:37.919
Where are you from, Jeff?
00:02:38.080 --> 00:02:39.280
Where'd you grow up?
00:02:39.759 --> 00:02:40.479
Where are you from?
00:02:40.639 --> 00:02:40.879
Yeah.
00:02:41.039 --> 00:02:42.560
I grew up in Virginia.
00:02:42.639 --> 00:02:48.639
Uh, your town, Virginia, is where I was born and raised until fifth grade, moved to Crawfordsville, Indiana.
00:02:48.800 --> 00:02:50.560
Pretty much have lived in Indiana since.
00:02:50.800 --> 00:02:51.199
Very cool.
00:02:51.280 --> 00:02:52.639
Now, is Virginia the South?
00:02:52.719 --> 00:02:53.360
I know you say that.
00:02:53.520 --> 00:02:54.240
It is 100%.
00:02:54.560 --> 00:02:55.280
Okay, Virginia.
00:02:55.439 --> 00:02:55.919
A southerner.
00:02:56.240 --> 00:02:56.639
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:02:56.960 --> 00:02:59.199
Now, a different kind of South for sure.
00:02:59.280 --> 00:02:59.520
Yeah.
00:02:59.759 --> 00:03:00.159
Very cool.
00:03:00.400 --> 00:03:01.599
Tell us a little bit about your family.
00:03:01.759 --> 00:03:04.240
Now, I'm guessing most of us know, but what's family life?
00:03:04.719 --> 00:03:06.080
Yeah, my wife, Stephanie.
00:03:06.159 --> 00:03:09.919
Uh, we met in high school, high school sweethearts, got married.
00:03:10.080 --> 00:03:12.319
Um, then we have two boys.
00:03:12.479 --> 00:03:16.800
Our oldest is 11 Carson, our youngest is seven Knox.
00:03:17.199 --> 00:03:23.439
Um, both of them are in some ways little mini me's, and um, in some ways little mini stephs too.
00:03:23.520 --> 00:03:29.759
And so uh just a lot of fun, very much on a baseball field as often as we can be uh right now, but really sweet season.
00:03:29.919 --> 00:03:32.319
Thank goodness they're at least somewhat mini steffs too.
00:03:32.560 --> 00:03:34.000
We're all thankful for that.
00:03:34.960 --> 00:03:39.120
Jeff, tell us a little bit, maybe one of a more serious question, one a question from people excited about.
00:03:39.199 --> 00:03:41.120
Tell us a little bit about how you became a Christian.
00:03:41.280 --> 00:03:41.520
Yeah.
00:03:41.599 --> 00:03:53.280
So I actually um grew up in a Christian home and went to a Christian preschool uh at a local Baptist church in Virginia and really got to hear the gospel thankfully often.
00:03:53.520 --> 00:03:59.840
And um, when I was seven years old, uh I was in church on a Sunday, the gospel was preached.
00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:08.800
Uh, I recognized, I think probably for the first time uh at seven, that I was a sinner and uh and that I needed Jesus to save me.
00:04:08.960 --> 00:04:11.039
And uh that's probably all I recognized.
00:04:11.120 --> 00:04:13.680
That was the extent of it, but I knew those two things.
00:04:13.840 --> 00:04:18.160
Um back in the Baptists in the South, that meant you walked the aisle.
00:04:18.240 --> 00:04:21.360
Uh, so there'd be an altar call and you came forward, walked the aisle.
00:04:21.439 --> 00:04:22.399
So that's what I did.
00:04:22.560 --> 00:04:34.639
And uh met with my pastor probably three or four times in preparation to be baptized and was baptized as a believer probably, I don't know, a few months afterwards, uh, when I uh went forward.
00:04:34.800 --> 00:04:38.560
And um, and then really in some ways, uh, the Lord's been so kind.
00:04:38.639 --> 00:04:48.959
Um, I I tell people often that my story uh is a little bit more like the elder son in uh the parable that we'll be looking at in just a few weeks.
00:04:49.040 --> 00:04:59.600
Uh that I um I I've never really been that given over to like, you know, super like worldly living.
00:04:59.759 --> 00:05:02.639
Uh that's just never been that attractive to me.
00:05:02.720 --> 00:05:13.600
Uh, but pride, selfishness, um, self-centeredness, um, those sorts of things have been are so deeply rooted in my heart.
00:05:13.839 --> 00:05:22.079
And so I feel like from age seven on, the Lord has slowly and graciously been just ripping those things out.
00:05:22.240 --> 00:05:37.120
And um, and so there were certainly some really hard times and times in which uh, especially in high school for me, um, I really wanted to fit in and um and so felt like I put Jesus in some ways my life in Christ on the back burner.
00:05:37.199 --> 00:05:46.319
Uh when I was a sophomore, uh just finishing off my sophomore year in high school, I just remember thinking, uh, really crying out to the Lord for like a month.
00:05:46.560 --> 00:05:48.959
Like, I just want to live for you every day.
00:05:49.199 --> 00:05:50.800
Like, I want to do this.
00:05:50.959 --> 00:05:58.480
Um, like I want to know like what it what it looks like and means to actually walk as a Christian.
00:05:58.639 --> 00:06:00.720
Um, and so I went to an FCA camp.
00:06:00.800 --> 00:06:03.519
Fellowship Christian Athletes was huge to me uh growing up.
00:06:03.600 --> 00:06:09.040
And so I went to this FCA leaders' camp that summer, and I really think the Lord answered my prayer.
00:06:09.199 --> 00:06:17.439
Like, not that I walked perfect, but I understood maybe for a first time really what it meant and it looked like to just walk as a Christian.
00:06:17.600 --> 00:06:22.959
Um and so I came out of that summer and the Lord did a really encouraging work.
00:06:23.120 --> 00:06:27.759
I think that's part of the time when I began to have an aspiration to be a pastor, uh, to ministry.
00:06:27.839 --> 00:06:29.920
I don't think I would have thought of his pastoral necessarily.
00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:32.879
I think I would have thought of it as like working for FCA or something like that.
00:06:32.959 --> 00:06:34.240
But I came out of that summer.
00:06:34.399 --> 00:06:38.959
Steph will tell you, I that's when I met Steph, probably a month or so after that as well.
00:06:39.120 --> 00:06:44.399
Like we went to, we would have had church, Sunday school, church, Sunday night youth group.
00:06:44.480 --> 00:06:47.600
Uh we went Wednesday nights, we went to a Bible study.
00:06:47.759 --> 00:06:49.680
Friday nights, we went to a Bible study.
00:06:49.839 --> 00:06:52.000
Uh Saturday night, we went to a Bible study.
00:06:52.160 --> 00:07:01.439
We got together every single morning, 20 of us, uh, before church to do devotion or before school to do devotions together, uh, and then prayed together and then broke for the day.
00:07:01.519 --> 00:07:03.519
Um, we were super involved in FCA.
00:07:03.600 --> 00:07:10.480
So, I mean, I any opportunity I could find to read the Bible, talk with people about Jesus, um, I wanted.
00:07:10.639 --> 00:07:15.680
And uh, and so then that's when I, you know, decided to go to Taylor University, study Christian ministry.
00:07:15.920 --> 00:07:20.480
After that, went to set seminary to learn more theology, those sorts of things.
00:07:20.639 --> 00:07:35.920
Pastored for five years in uh Crawfordsville at the church I grew up in, went back to do a PhD, then went back to Crawfordsville to pastor for uh six years at Rot Point, and then um yeah, we planted the fields five years ago.
00:07:36.079 --> 00:07:40.079
So that's a maybe the end a little bit shorter, but that's the idea.
00:07:40.319 --> 00:07:41.040
Well, praise the Lord.
00:07:41.120 --> 00:07:43.680
Thanks for even just thanks for your vulnerability in that, Jeff.
00:07:43.759 --> 00:07:52.480
And uh praise the Lord that he saves sinners like us and um sanctifies us and um and is still doing so here now.
00:07:52.720 --> 00:07:53.600
I just want to give encouragement.
00:07:53.680 --> 00:07:58.319
If you're someone who got was a Christian when you were young, I used to think I had a terrible testimony.
00:07:58.560 --> 00:08:08.639
And uh the the fact that the Lord has kept me from age seven to now, um, I think is the greatest show of his grace and power that I can imagine.
00:08:08.800 --> 00:08:18.319
Um and and so I just I look back and go, oh no, the work that the Lord does to save someone middle of life later in life is so incredible.
00:08:18.720 --> 00:08:23.199
But the work to keep someone in Christ uh is just as incredible.
00:08:23.360 --> 00:08:25.519
So just be encouraged by whatever your testimony may be.
00:08:26.240 --> 00:08:26.639
That's good.
00:08:27.040 --> 00:08:33.440
Jeff, tell us something that most people in our church wouldn't know about you.
00:08:34.960 --> 00:08:35.360
I know.
00:08:35.519 --> 00:08:38.080
I feel like I'm I'm like I'm a pretty open person.
00:08:38.159 --> 00:08:38.879
So I'm trying to do that.
00:08:39.039 --> 00:08:41.759
You like to use your embarrassing life stories as sermon illustration.
00:08:41.919 --> 00:08:42.159
I do.
00:08:42.240 --> 00:08:42.960
I like to bring that out.
00:08:43.279 --> 00:08:44.720
I'm earing the hair.
00:08:44.960 --> 00:08:45.120
Yeah.
00:08:45.279 --> 00:08:51.600
I did do improv comedy in uh at Taylor, which I'm not sure that a lot of people have you used that maybe?
00:08:51.759 --> 00:08:52.240
I don't know.
00:08:52.399 --> 00:08:53.440
I that's part of the thing too.
00:08:54.080 --> 00:08:54.399
Has he used that?
00:08:54.799 --> 00:08:55.039
Go with it.
00:08:55.120 --> 00:08:56.320
I was also I would say he's good.
00:08:56.559 --> 00:09:03.440
I was also in show choir for four years in uh high school and and did four musicals.
00:09:03.600 --> 00:09:05.840
One I uh worked A V.
00:09:05.919 --> 00:09:10.799
Um, so I did I, you know, I feel like I have um like I have a lot of interests.
00:09:10.879 --> 00:09:17.759
Like I played football, basketball, baseball, tennis, and swam at some point in time, varsity in uh high school.
00:09:17.840 --> 00:09:19.440
I technically JV football.
00:09:19.600 --> 00:09:22.799
And um, and then did a bunch of musicals and things like that.
00:09:23.279 --> 00:09:27.120
We have Detroit Bolton of uh of Crawford's Hill High School there.
00:09:27.200 --> 00:09:28.559
That's a high school musical record.
00:09:28.720 --> 00:09:30.639
Okay, I was like, I don't know what that is.
00:09:30.960 --> 00:09:32.639
Most people listening will understand.
00:09:32.799 --> 00:09:34.480
Yeah, I'm like, I don't know who that is.
00:09:34.879 --> 00:09:36.080
Clash of the worlds there.
00:09:36.159 --> 00:09:36.480
Okay.
00:09:36.799 --> 00:09:37.679
Very cool, Jeff.
00:09:37.759 --> 00:09:41.600
Wow, any uh any roles that we would know, like any plays that we would know that you're in?
00:09:41.759 --> 00:09:43.360
Uh I was in Bye Bye Birdie.
00:09:43.440 --> 00:09:49.200
Um, and Bye bye Birdie is a pretty well-known musical, and I was like this huge nerd.
00:09:49.360 --> 00:09:51.440
Um, and so that was Hugo F.
00:09:51.600 --> 00:09:52.240
Peabody.
00:09:52.320 --> 00:09:53.759
Doesn't that sound like a nerdy name?
00:09:54.240 --> 00:09:54.960
It's the character I played.
00:09:55.279 --> 00:10:00.960
I played a tap dancing gangster in uh and I had to do a rap in my senior year.
00:10:01.120 --> 00:10:04.000
So those are we need to recover some footage of this there.
00:10:04.080 --> 00:10:05.360
That would be that would be quite fun.
00:10:05.519 --> 00:10:06.639
Yeah, maybe John and Judy.
00:10:06.879 --> 00:10:07.759
John help us out with that.
00:10:08.080 --> 00:10:08.399
Come on.
00:10:08.480 --> 00:10:11.919
I'm sure it's out there, guys, but I'd rather it not come out.
00:10:12.639 --> 00:10:13.840
Oh, we would rather it come out.
00:10:14.080 --> 00:10:14.480
I'm sure.
00:10:14.639 --> 00:10:16.960
Uh uh last question I had, then Brain has some questions after this.
00:10:17.039 --> 00:10:18.720
Well, I have some questions at the end too.
00:10:18.879 --> 00:10:21.279
Uh, maybe so this is within then the last four years.
00:10:21.440 --> 00:10:23.279
What's something about planting a church?
00:10:23.360 --> 00:10:29.120
Uh being the lead planting pastor of a church, I don't know how you you phrase that, uh, that you didn't expect.
00:10:29.279 --> 00:10:33.679
Maybe the most surprising part uh to you about planting the fields church.
00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:38.240
Yeah, you know, in some ways that anyone would come, perhaps?
00:10:38.639 --> 00:10:40.639
Yeah, I mean no, for sure.
00:10:40.799 --> 00:10:41.840
Like that's what I was gonna say.
00:10:41.919 --> 00:10:43.759
Like just how gracious God is.
00:10:43.919 --> 00:10:46.879
Uh, you know, Steph and I are not risk takers.
00:10:47.039 --> 00:10:50.080
We're not like, let's just jump out and see what happens.
00:10:50.159 --> 00:10:52.399
And church planting feels a little bit like that.
00:10:52.480 --> 00:10:59.440
And so I don't think either one this was an endeavor that either one of us were like, oh yeah, like we've been preparing our whole lives for this.
00:10:59.679 --> 00:11:07.440
Um, it it very much has, but but the Lord has shown just how uh gracious and good and he provides.
00:11:07.600 --> 00:11:16.240
I mean, we I feel like both Steph and I would say that our faith has grown greatly um over the last four or five years, just seeing the Lord's hand.
00:11:16.320 --> 00:11:21.200
Uh, I also think probably the thing preaching was the thing I was most scared about coming in.
00:11:21.279 --> 00:11:26.159
Um, I think this might surprise people too a little bit, maybe just because I preach most Sundays.
00:11:26.240 --> 00:11:28.080
Uh preaching's really hard for me.
00:11:28.159 --> 00:11:29.759
I I never thought I would preach.
00:11:29.840 --> 00:11:31.600
Uh I never took a preaching class.
00:11:31.759 --> 00:11:34.879
I really didn't preach much at all until I was probably like 35.
00:11:35.200 --> 00:11:40.320
Um, and uh, and really that was hesitantly um sort of forced to do so.
00:11:40.480 --> 00:11:45.039
And uh, and so I was really nervous coming into the fields, like, can I preach every Sunday?
00:11:45.200 --> 00:11:48.799
And and a little bit like, will anybody ever like come?
00:11:49.200 --> 00:11:51.440
Like, like that's I mean, real I mean for real.
00:11:51.519 --> 00:11:57.200
And so um the Lord's just been, I mean, we're such a gracious people that are just so encouraging to me in that regard.
00:11:57.360 --> 00:12:01.519
And um, and and that has been sweeter than I thought it was gonna be.
00:12:01.679 --> 00:12:02.399
It really has.
00:12:02.559 --> 00:12:09.200
I mean, I I was I was honestly, I was pretty terrified um of getting up every Sunday, and the Lord has just been so sweet.
00:12:09.360 --> 00:12:11.759
So you couldn't tell at all from our part.
00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:15.440
Yeah, Braden's got some questions for your preaching and all the efforts that you give.
00:12:15.519 --> 00:12:16.159
So it's great.
00:12:16.559 --> 00:12:18.080
We are Brain's got some questions for you now.
00:12:18.159 --> 00:12:19.360
Yeah, maybe harder questions?
00:12:19.440 --> 00:12:20.080
Are there harder questions?
00:12:20.399 --> 00:12:20.960
Well, we'll see.
00:12:22.240 --> 00:12:23.120
We'll see what Jeff thinks.
00:12:23.360 --> 00:12:25.519
Braden is less nice than I am, so they might be some harder questions.
00:12:25.679 --> 00:12:27.440
Oh, yeah, I left these off the script for sure.
00:12:27.919 --> 00:12:28.720
That's great.
00:12:28.960 --> 00:12:29.919
Just coming at.
00:12:30.480 --> 00:12:34.639
Uh where's the last place on earth you'd want to live?
00:12:34.960 --> 00:12:37.519
Place that you would hate to be.
00:12:37.759 --> 00:12:38.720
And then you can flip it.
00:12:38.799 --> 00:12:39.519
Where's the best place?
00:12:39.600 --> 00:12:43.200
Besides Westfield, Indiana, where would you want to really live?
00:12:43.519 --> 00:12:46.559
Yeah, the last place on earth I'd want to live.
00:12:46.720 --> 00:12:57.200
I mean, I'm sure there's some places out there that I just don't know how terrible they are to live, but maybe some places that I can like think of pretty.
00:12:57.279 --> 00:13:00.000
I mean, anything that's just has no cities.
00:13:00.159 --> 00:13:11.360
So I'm thinking of like Nebraska um or like a Arkansas, like some of these places, I like city culture, life, things like that.
00:13:11.600 --> 00:13:18.480
Um, you know, there just be, I would think some areas that are like very flat and which I everybody's like, this is Indiana.
00:13:18.639 --> 00:13:19.840
Um, I love Indiana.
00:13:19.919 --> 00:13:23.279
I think the mountains of Indiana.
00:13:23.600 --> 00:13:24.720
I don't know that I care.
00:13:24.799 --> 00:13:35.200
I like mountains and I like water and things like that, oceans, lakes, things, but I think I I would want cities and culture and college towns and things like that.
00:13:35.360 --> 00:13:39.200
So I think places that are that in my mind are just void of that.
00:13:39.360 --> 00:13:43.679
I think anything that is super, super humid, I hate humidity.
00:13:43.840 --> 00:13:50.639
Uh so like we've gone down to like I love Alabama is a sweet place, but man, it is so humid.
00:13:50.720 --> 00:13:53.519
I had to like take a water break playing mini golf one time.
00:13:53.759 --> 00:13:56.320
Uh so I mean it's just I'm not interested in that.
00:13:56.399 --> 00:13:56.720
Yeah.
00:13:56.960 --> 00:13:57.519
It's great.
00:13:57.600 --> 00:13:58.159
It's great.
00:13:58.320 --> 00:14:01.600
Uh, biggest pet peeve and why.
00:14:02.720 --> 00:14:03.440
Oh man.
00:14:03.600 --> 00:14:04.639
I don't, I don't know.
00:14:04.799 --> 00:14:08.879
Man, I almost wish Steph was here because she could probably tell me what yours is.
00:14:09.120 --> 00:14:12.080
What my biggest uh pet peeve is.
00:14:12.240 --> 00:14:16.159
Um I don't know that I have a ton of like pet peeves.
00:14:16.320 --> 00:14:20.000
I do think, and I've even realized the last podcast we recorded, I did this to Joe.
00:14:20.159 --> 00:14:26.080
I think I do care a lot about grammar and spelling and pronunciation and things like that.
00:14:26.240 --> 00:14:29.840
Um so I um I but it's not a pet peeve.
00:14:29.919 --> 00:14:31.919
Like it, but it I can't- You are very gracious in it.
00:14:32.080 --> 00:14:33.039
Well, I can't not correct.
00:14:33.440 --> 00:14:39.840
It's pretty much it's pretty much me who I get corrected by Jeff and my wife, who just always correct me on the things I say or do you think.
00:14:40.159 --> 00:14:43.919
Both of us are probably very wired to care about those sorts of things.
00:14:44.159 --> 00:14:48.639
Um so but I don't know if it's a pet peeve, but honestly, sometimes too.
00:14:48.720 --> 00:14:51.919
I have to put like um I don't, yeah.
00:14:52.080 --> 00:14:56.240
I feel like my boys sometimes, I'm sure, could tell you what my pet peeves are too.
00:14:56.399 --> 00:15:01.440
Like any sort of like tapping, like can things like that will, yeah, they'll get to me.
00:15:01.519 --> 00:15:01.679
Yeah.
00:15:01.840 --> 00:15:02.000
Yeah.
00:15:02.080 --> 00:15:03.039
But I probably do those too.
00:15:03.120 --> 00:15:05.519
So things that Joe can be doing the rest of the episode now.
00:15:05.679 --> 00:15:06.399
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:15:06.720 --> 00:15:15.440
Uh what is something that is gonna be maybe like one thing in life or something you could think back to that you're like, man, I wish I could do that over.
00:15:15.600 --> 00:15:17.360
I wish I could get a redo on that.
00:15:17.519 --> 00:15:31.519
You may I mean I've done that a huge regret, but you're like, oh man, if I could get to redo something that was like significant or yeah, and this is probably this this probably feels too like Christian, but uh I just wish I knew how important the church was earlier.
00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:45.919
And I think early on in my ministry too, and I'm really thankful for how the Lord has worked, but I just I don't think I really understood what it meant to be a part of a faithful church and what a faithful church was and and those sorts of things.
00:15:46.080 --> 00:15:52.320
And I just look back at my college career, I really didn't plug into a really good local church.
00:15:52.559 --> 00:16:16.799
00:16:16.960 --> 00:16:18.080
Yeah, yeah, that's good.
00:16:18.240 --> 00:16:20.320
I would probably resonate with that in some ways too.
00:16:20.399 --> 00:16:30.480
But um what's uh what's something that you like many people enjoy or like or have done that you would be like, I would never be interested in doing something like that?
00:16:30.720 --> 00:16:42.799
Anything with heights, so roller coasters, skydiving, uh like rock climbing, like inside, like the little rock climbing wall that goes up 25 feet, no problem.
00:16:43.120 --> 00:16:43.600
I think.
00:16:43.759 --> 00:16:47.519
Um, but any of those things I'm I'm just not interested in.
00:16:47.759 --> 00:16:53.600
Really, your run club on whatever, you know, things like like I have no interest in running um at all.
00:16:54.720 --> 00:16:58.639
Or anything that really has anything to do with my feet, soccer, kickball.
00:16:58.799 --> 00:17:00.080
Like, I don't like any of those things.
00:17:00.240 --> 00:17:04.480
Um so and I think a lot of people do, and you know, I'm I'm glad for them.
00:17:04.720 --> 00:17:05.119
Good for you.
00:17:05.200 --> 00:17:05.920
Yes, right.
00:17:07.039 --> 00:17:11.519
Um couple uh maybe, you know, maybe better, deeper questions to think about.
00:17:11.759 --> 00:17:13.519
Uh well, maybe quicker one.
00:17:13.680 --> 00:17:17.200
What would be the title of your next book and what would it be about?
00:17:18.000 --> 00:17:18.400
Mr.
00:17:18.559 --> 00:17:19.279
Author Dr.
00:17:19.440 --> 00:17:20.559
Jeff Strickland.
00:17:20.799 --> 00:17:20.960
Yeah.
00:17:21.200 --> 00:17:23.200
Is there an is there a next book?
00:17:23.599 --> 00:17:24.319
Maybe.
00:17:24.559 --> 00:17:27.200
Um I'm I I think there is.
00:17:27.359 --> 00:17:28.640
I don't know timing-wise.
00:17:28.720 --> 00:17:31.839
I'm I'm sort of something we talked about even as elders.
00:17:31.920 --> 00:17:33.119
Uh, you know, it takes a long time.
00:17:33.200 --> 00:17:34.240
It takes a lot of work to write a book.
00:17:34.400 --> 00:17:34.640
For sure.
00:17:34.799 --> 00:17:38.799
And so just trying to figure out whether it's wise to start tackling something like that right now.
00:17:38.880 --> 00:17:42.160
And uh my uh conclusion right now has been it is not wise.
00:17:42.319 --> 00:17:43.359
So but it's in my mind.
00:17:43.599 --> 00:17:44.400
That's the title of the book.
00:17:45.920 --> 00:17:50.400
Uh I think I would write something on joy or heaven from the Puritans.
00:17:50.480 --> 00:17:53.680
Uh, I've got both of those things uh kind of in my mind.
00:17:53.839 --> 00:18:00.799
I really think um it'd be really helpful for Christians to understand what real joy is, um biblical Christian joy.
00:18:00.960 --> 00:18:13.119
And then I I think I would love to, yeah, to write a book from the Puritans, uh, not just what heaven is, but how we meditate on heaven, how we think of heaven, why heaven matters, uh, things like that.
00:18:13.200 --> 00:18:16.720
So those are two sort of books that I think would be um in the mix.
00:18:16.799 --> 00:18:19.200
I I don't I assume they will title them.
00:18:19.440 --> 00:18:20.559
That's usually what happens with me.
00:18:20.720 --> 00:18:23.839
I had a great title for uh my dissertation, and they were like, nope.
00:18:24.160 --> 00:18:25.359
So what's that title?
00:18:25.440 --> 00:18:26.000
I kinda wanna know.
00:18:26.240 --> 00:18:31.440
I think it was too it it felt like it was gonna be too encouraging, and they were like, this is an academic book.
00:18:31.680 --> 00:18:35.039
Um we don't want people to pick it up and think it's gonna be really interesting.
00:18:35.200 --> 00:18:37.200
I think that's they didn't say it that way, but that's kind of how they said it.
00:18:37.920 --> 00:18:39.680
I think I it's called the foundation of joy.
00:18:39.759 --> 00:18:46.240
I think I had something in there like the wellspring of joy, um, something like that that make it a little bit, but yeah, it didn't go.
00:18:46.480 --> 00:18:47.440
Not not not it.
00:18:47.599 --> 00:18:48.319
They weren't having it.
00:18:48.559 --> 00:18:49.200
Nope.
00:18:49.440 --> 00:18:59.279
Um, what is a like normal, small, easy way that people in our church uh could do uh to encourage one another?
00:18:59.680 --> 00:19:07.680
What's a small, simple way, small step, maybe even this Sunday or this week, that someone could do to encourage another brother or sister in Christ.
00:19:08.319 --> 00:19:12.720
You know, I feel like we are um longing for connection.
00:19:12.960 --> 00:19:29.599
And so I I just think if we as a church regularly sort of just every time, and I think the spirit does this often, every time we have someone who comes to mind in our church that we could just be like, oh, I just want to encourage them, I want to send them like this was really helpful to me.
00:19:29.839 --> 00:19:32.400
I just think we need to let people know those things more often.
00:19:32.559 --> 00:19:36.079
I think a lot of times we're like, oh, I should have let them know, and then we never do.
00:19:36.240 --> 00:19:38.880
Um and I just think not letting those things pass.
00:19:39.119 --> 00:19:44.000
And then I think secondly, um, on Sunday mornings, I was usually talking about this at Fields 101.
00:19:44.079 --> 00:19:54.480
I I just think if we came into Sunday mornings going, I want to drink so deeply of God's word this morning, but I also want to be used.
00:19:54.720 --> 00:20:07.680
Like I just I I I want to I don't want to leave this Sunday morning without praying for, encouraging, um you know, telling someone of God's grace, you know, the those sorts of things.
00:20:07.759 --> 00:20:11.119
I I just want to make sure I do that at least once every Sunday.
00:20:11.200 --> 00:20:14.319
I I just think if if we were doing some things like that, I think that'd be huge.
00:20:14.960 --> 00:20:18.000
I got one more, then we can transition to some rapid fire Joe.
00:20:18.160 --> 00:20:19.119
Uh we're doing that.
00:20:19.200 --> 00:20:29.359
But um maybe what's a spiritual discipline that you want to grow in, or one that's underrated that you're like, man, I I would love to myself, other people spend more time doing this thing.
00:20:29.440 --> 00:20:35.279
I think we probably think about the easy ones, Bible reading, prayer, but other ones that you think about, or maybe just growing in, that sort of thing.
00:20:36.000 --> 00:20:39.200
I so badly want to memorize scripture, and I'm trying.
00:20:39.359 --> 00:20:46.720
Like I'm actually trying to do this with Colossians as we prepare to preach it, and I honestly failing pretty miserably.
00:20:46.880 --> 00:20:56.640
Um, so I just think memorization is so if you can like actually literally store God's word in you, like how great is that?
00:20:56.799 --> 00:21:04.000
Um, so I had the opportunity when I was in seminary to memorize the entire book of James for a class, and I still have passages from James.
00:21:04.079 --> 00:21:06.079
I don't have it memorized anymore, but I kind of do.
00:21:06.240 --> 00:21:07.119
Like it's just in there.
00:21:07.279 --> 00:21:07.839
It's kind of there, yeah.
00:21:08.000 --> 00:21:09.119
Yeah, and it's so helpful.
00:21:09.200 --> 00:21:10.960
And so I'm like, why don't I do that more often?
00:21:11.119 --> 00:21:17.920
So I think scripture memorization is like the most overlooked and I think just practically helpful thing for Christians.
00:21:18.240 --> 00:21:18.640
That's great.
00:21:18.880 --> 00:21:19.119
Yeah.
00:21:19.599 --> 00:21:20.000
That's great.
00:21:20.079 --> 00:21:22.960
Some rapid fire questions for you, Jeff, to close us off here.
00:21:23.359 --> 00:21:26.640
At a coffee shop, what's your normal coffee order?
00:21:27.200 --> 00:21:33.200
So I only drink decaf, which is already gonna make some people leave the church or be very disappointed.
00:21:33.440 --> 00:21:37.200
Um, I uh I would get a decaf quortado.
00:21:37.359 --> 00:21:40.480
Well, for us those listening, you know uh what's a cortado?
00:21:40.720 --> 00:21:44.880
Cortado is equal parts espresso and steamed milk.
00:21:45.119 --> 00:21:48.160
Um so it almost looks it's really small.
00:21:48.319 --> 00:21:50.640
It's probably like four ounces.
00:21:50.799 --> 00:21:54.559
Um so very, very small, but it's it's just really, really good.
00:21:54.640 --> 00:21:59.920
If you ever want to know if a coffee shop is legit, the de the the cortado don't have to be the cortado.
00:22:01.039 --> 00:22:06.640
If the cortado is good, it's a it's a if they know what a cortado is, that's that they better know that.
00:22:06.799 --> 00:22:09.519
And then if it's good, then you know you're you're on the right.
00:22:09.920 --> 00:22:12.799
Well, if it's not four ounces, that's that's that's a way to tell you.
00:22:14.079 --> 00:22:14.880
That's not a cortado.
00:22:15.039 --> 00:22:17.200
If they don't know what it is, they don't give you a cortado, they would know.
00:22:17.359 --> 00:22:26.160
But I also feel like it is like one of the best ways to really get a full good taste of espresso coffee, that sort of thing.
00:22:26.319 --> 00:22:26.480
Yeah.
00:22:26.640 --> 00:22:30.319
I thought is maybe I'm just thinking now, is maybe a pet peeve of yours bad coffee?
00:22:30.400 --> 00:22:30.799
Would that be it?
00:22:30.960 --> 00:22:31.839
Would that be in the realm?
00:22:32.079 --> 00:22:32.720
Yeah.
00:22:33.839 --> 00:22:34.640
Well, you're charitable.
00:22:35.119 --> 00:22:36.160
I'm charitable to that.
00:22:36.319 --> 00:22:38.640
I like to mock people, but then I drink decaf.
00:22:38.960 --> 00:22:41.200
So it's just one of those where you just feel so silly.
00:22:41.440 --> 00:22:41.759
Very fun.
00:22:41.920 --> 00:22:42.480
That was too late.
00:22:42.559 --> 00:22:43.359
That was not rapid fire.
00:22:43.440 --> 00:22:43.759
My bad.
00:22:43.839 --> 00:22:43.920
Yeah.
00:22:44.079 --> 00:22:44.960
More rapid fire.
00:22:45.039 --> 00:22:47.279
What's your least favorite food?
00:22:47.839 --> 00:22:49.440
I mean any vegetable.
00:22:49.680 --> 00:22:50.079
Wow.
00:22:50.240 --> 00:22:50.720
Realistic.
00:22:50.960 --> 00:22:51.119
Okay.
00:22:51.279 --> 00:22:51.359
Yeah.
00:22:52.079 --> 00:22:53.359
Favorite ice cream flavor.
00:22:53.599 --> 00:23:02.559
Uh, probably mint chocolate chip or mint Oreo, something with mint in there, or the uh blackberry chip at Graters.
00:23:03.039 --> 00:23:03.839
Graters, super good.
00:23:04.240 --> 00:23:08.799
Anything at the book of the Bible that you would be most excited about preaching.
00:23:11.119 --> 00:23:14.880
Man, that is that's uh it's whatever's coming up most of the time.
00:23:15.039 --> 00:23:19.519
But I I would have loved at some point in time, I'd all have preached through Romans.
00:23:19.680 --> 00:23:21.759
But I want to get to where I think I can actually do it well.
00:23:21.920 --> 00:23:26.720
I think you said that's what you were like, I once I'll become a good preacher, then I'll once I get we're like Jeff, you're a great preacher.
00:23:26.799 --> 00:23:27.119
Come on.
00:23:27.200 --> 00:23:27.519
Yeah.
00:23:27.759 --> 00:23:29.039
Not to Roman standards, yeah.
00:23:29.279 --> 00:23:32.240
But for the Bible, you would be least excited about preaching.
00:23:32.400 --> 00:23:33.279
Are we allowed to ask that?
00:23:33.359 --> 00:23:34.160
Is that okay to ask?
00:23:34.319 --> 00:23:35.440
That seems like a tough question.
00:23:35.759 --> 00:23:37.200
It's a tough question, but I don't know.
00:23:37.279 --> 00:23:38.000
I'd go.
00:23:38.559 --> 00:23:42.319
Yeah, I'm I mean, uh honestly, my worst experience of a proverbs.
00:23:42.400 --> 00:23:45.839
Uh I mean, I just not big I love Proverbs, so helpful.
00:23:46.079 --> 00:23:47.839
Preaching it is just like, I don't know what to do.
00:23:48.000 --> 00:23:48.640
That would be unique.
00:23:48.720 --> 00:23:49.519
Yeah, it's so tough.
00:23:49.839 --> 00:23:50.240
Be unique.
00:23:50.319 --> 00:23:53.039
Uh favorite sport, baseball.
00:23:53.359 --> 00:23:57.039
In light of that, what what's your life walk-up song?
00:23:57.440 --> 00:23:59.920
Oh man, we talk about this so often.
00:24:00.240 --> 00:24:02.720
Um it shifts so often.
00:24:02.880 --> 00:24:07.440
I I I would if I was walking up right now, I'd walk up to Andy Minio's You Can't Stop Me.
00:24:07.920 --> 00:24:10.160
Uh would be probably what I would walk up to.
00:24:10.400 --> 00:24:11.119
Get you ready to go.
00:24:11.200 --> 00:24:11.440
Yeah, yeah.
00:24:11.680 --> 00:24:12.240
Hit a home run.
00:24:12.400 --> 00:24:12.559
Yeah.
00:24:12.640 --> 00:24:12.799
Yeah.
00:24:13.119 --> 00:24:15.440
I mean, for me, that a single over the second base of its head.
00:24:15.599 --> 00:24:16.079
That's a home run.
00:24:16.319 --> 00:24:17.519
Maybe double if you go fast.
00:24:18.000 --> 00:24:18.480
Probably not.
00:24:18.960 --> 00:24:20.079
Come to run club.
00:24:21.200 --> 00:24:22.559
I'll steal second.
00:24:22.960 --> 00:24:23.680
Last question I have.
00:24:23.759 --> 00:24:24.720
I don't know if Braden has more.
00:24:24.880 --> 00:24:27.440
Favorite book that everyone should read?
00:24:27.599 --> 00:24:29.279
I think the Bible doesn't count in this.
00:24:29.359 --> 00:24:30.160
Is that right, Braden?
00:24:30.400 --> 00:24:30.559
Yeah.
00:24:30.720 --> 00:24:30.960
Yeah.
00:24:31.200 --> 00:24:33.119
Uh I think everybody should read Mere Christianity.
00:24:33.279 --> 00:24:33.920
Mere Christianity.
00:24:34.799 --> 00:24:35.599
Yes, Lewis.
00:24:35.920 --> 00:24:38.000
Yeah, either one of those are yeah.
00:24:38.400 --> 00:24:38.720
Huge.
00:24:38.880 --> 00:24:40.000
Uh Pilgrim's Progress.
00:24:40.079 --> 00:24:41.680
There's so many, but uh, Mere Christianity.
00:24:41.839 --> 00:24:42.319
Favorite book.
00:24:42.480 --> 00:24:43.119
Mere Christianity.
00:24:43.359 --> 00:24:44.559
Braden, any other questions for James?
00:24:44.799 --> 00:24:45.279
I got one more.
00:24:45.440 --> 00:24:46.559
Uh superpower.
00:24:46.720 --> 00:24:49.599
What's a what would be a superpower that you would pick?
00:24:50.240 --> 00:24:55.440
What would be my what would be I think I I honestly I would love, I don't know, is that true?
00:24:55.599 --> 00:24:59.440
I mean, probably to fly, even though I'm afraid of heights.
00:24:59.519 --> 00:25:04.400
But I think if I was in control and I knew that I'm like, I'm gonna be fine, I think it would be to fly.
00:25:04.480 --> 00:25:05.839
I think flying would be awesome.
00:25:06.160 --> 00:25:07.039
Get places pretty fast.
00:25:07.200 --> 00:25:09.039
It'd be I could get places really, really quick.
00:25:09.119 --> 00:25:09.759
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:25:09.839 --> 00:25:11.839
I and it would just be what cool views.
00:25:11.920 --> 00:25:15.119
And it's gotta be so like just feels freeing.
00:25:15.359 --> 00:25:16.559
Like, just I don't know.
00:25:16.640 --> 00:25:17.680
I think flying would be it.
00:25:18.160 --> 00:25:18.880
Yeah, that's great.
00:25:19.039 --> 00:25:20.640
Those are the questions you passed, Jeff.
00:25:20.720 --> 00:25:25.839
We um, Jeff, we're so thankful for you and all you do to love us, Braden and I especially are around you often.
00:25:25.920 --> 00:25:28.400
So we see you often, but our church is around you.
00:25:28.559 --> 00:25:29.519
We love you, Jeff.
00:25:29.680 --> 00:25:34.559
We are I'm so sure that being a lead pastor of a church is there's so many difficulties.
00:25:34.799 --> 00:25:36.400
You balance everything so well, Jeff.
00:25:36.480 --> 00:25:37.680
We're so thankful for all you do.
00:25:37.759 --> 00:25:41.440
You pour yourself out for the good of us, the glory of Christ.
00:25:41.599 --> 00:25:42.559
We are so thankful.
00:25:42.640 --> 00:25:43.599
So absolutely true.
00:25:43.759 --> 00:25:44.640
Yeah, thanks, Jeff.
00:25:44.799 --> 00:25:53.680
It is the sweetest privilege uh that I know um outside of being married to my wife, being in Christ to pastor the fields is is amazing.
00:25:53.839 --> 00:25:54.720
So thanks, brothers.
00:25:54.880 --> 00:25:55.680
We're thankful for you, Jeff.
00:25:55.759 --> 00:25:57.119
We're signing off for Fields Notes.
00:25:57.200 --> 00:26:00.880
I don't know who will be I'm not sure who will be next, but there will be more to come.
00:26:01.200 --> 00:26:02.240
One of the two guys I'm looking at.
00:26:02.400 --> 00:26:04.079
At some point, I feel pretty confident about that.
00:26:04.240 --> 00:26:05.680
At some point, we'll be on here as well.
00:26:05.920 --> 00:26:07.680
All right, we're signing off for Fields Notes.
00:26:07.839 --> 00:26:08.400
See ya.
