Speaker 1: This to me seems like the way it's going to be going forward to Lana because of the expanded playoffs and more teams having a chance. More teams like the Pirates and the Royals. They want to be good now they're tired of losing. Welcome everyone through the Thursday edition of Fair Territory. I'm Ken Rosenthal with Alana Rizzo and Man, there is a lot going on in the baseball world. We've got trade deadline talk, We've got Alex Korra talk. Christian Yelich is getting examined today, at which point the fate of his season will be determined. I am told that his preference here is to rest and rehab and engage in paid management, and that way he could come back this season. That's what he wants to do. Of course, you can understand that we will see what the doctor says. Yelich again is leaning toward just rest and rehab, but we will see. ALTA. Let's get right to it.
00:00:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, breaking us now from Ken Rosenthal.
00:00:53
Speaker 3: This is the busiest time of year, at least one of the busiest times of the year. We're talking trade deadline on Tuesday. You're going to be all over what is the latest ken with Garrett Crochet.
00:01:02
Speaker 1: Very interesting tweet this morning from John Hayman, and John essentially is reporting that Crochet, if he is going to pitch in October, if he gets traded, is going to want an extension. I want to show you this tweet from John, and I understand it to be true. Garrett Crochet planed with White Sox. It's his plan is to pitch normal workload as starter until end of regular season. If traded would need extension to pitch in October, he won't move the bullpen and will not take any break views start a routine as best for health. Okay, let's unpack this. Garrett Crochet has every right to feel this way, and you can understand why he would want to protect his health. At the same time, this trade was always going to be difficult because he is at a career high with innings pitched. He is entering uncharted territory. This particular bit of news makes it even more difficult because, frankly, I don't expect any team to give him an extension to buy him into October when they don't know when he's going to pitch again in October. If they can pitch him in October, I should say, so, if you don't know if you'll even have them available in October based on his workload, why would you give him an extension based on that. So again, this trade was always going to be difficult. This particular bit of news, again reported first by John Hayman, makes it that much more difficult.
00:02:23
Speaker 3: And he's saying that he wants to be a starter, that that heating thinks that's the best way for him. So even ken if their teams were thinking, hey, perhaps because of the innings issue, we put him in the bullpen, is that completely out of the question.
00:02:34
Speaker 1: Sure sounds like it now. Obviously the White Sox could trade him, his new team could try to talk him into it, but this is his stance, and the fact that it's his stance again complicates things for the White Sox considerably. The idea we've always discussed in leading up to the deadline here was Okay, maybe you can put him in relief, the build him back up, or just use him as a reliever. The rest of the way. We know he was not going to pitch in his first season as a professional starter thirty starts. He was not going to make thirty starts. Not going to pitch one hundred and eighty innings twenty to twenty five was a reasonable expectation. Now it becomes more complicated.
00:03:13
Speaker 3: All right, don't forget, guys, whatever questions you have for Ken Rosenthal. Let's get them loaded up into the chat right now. We're going to be Grill and Ken here in just a minute. I tell you what, Ken Mariners, they have collapsed. We knew that they had the starting pitching, but they have really struggled. The club had a ten game lead about a month ago in the Al West. Here come the mighty Astros. Obviously, how were they a lynchpin in the Al West? As far as what it means for the Trede deadline.
00:03:37
Speaker 1: They've let these two teams back into it, and the Astros were seven to nineteen. We were talking about whether this is finally the end of their reign. The Rangers have not played well really the entire season. They are still under five hundred and yet because the Mariners have collapsed like this, the Rangers are only three games out, and my understanding as of now is right now and understandably so, they are leaning toward going for it and not making a lot of the trades that we've discussed in recent weeks. If all day John Gray, No, they would add if anything, or right handed bat most likely. So the Rangers here are back in the mix. The Astros clearly are back in the mix. They've taken over first place from the Mariners, and now the Mariners have lost JP Crawford, Julio Rodriguez, and last Gligory Santo's to injuries. This is a real problem for them and I'm not sure it could be fixed at the trade deadline.
00:04:28
Speaker 3: And they just got rid of Ty France the Mariners did, which actually surprised me a little bit, increasing their need obviously for a first baseman.
00:04:34
Speaker 2: Julio Rodriguez is not performed.
00:04:36
Speaker 3: Well, what does this team need to do If Jerry Depoto's gonna actually have this team in it because Kenny, the way things are striking working out with the AL I think only one team in the AL West gets in and that's the division winner right along.
00:04:50
Speaker 1: It's a great point, and first base has been their biggest need. But as I wrote yesterday, Pete A. Lonso is not getting traded, Christian Walker is not getting traded, Vlagerrero Junior not getting traded. The market for bats is thin, the market for everything is thin. There aren't many sellers right, so offense is clearly their biggest need. There's something like twenty ninth in the majors in run score during this stretch for the last month in which they've been so bad. So I don't know exactly how they're going to do this and how they're going to address it. They're expecting Rodriguez back fairly soon, but JP Crawford's going to be a bit longer run. He's a huge part of what they do. They're not giving up. They can't give up their game at of first place. At the same time, their challenge is immense.
00:05:33
Speaker 3: It's crazy to think that only eight teams probably are selling not a lot out there. Like you mentioned the Boston Red Sox, they have started the second half can very slowly, losing five of six on a road chip to Chavez Ravine and then Colorado. But they did make a commitment to their skipper, Alex Cora, signing a three year deal worth just under twenty two million.
00:05:52
Speaker 2: What does that say to you?
00:05:54
Speaker 1: It says to me that the Red Sox finally are committing toward winning because Alex Cora is not signing this deal unless he feels the commitment is there. It's a great deal obviously for him financially. And it's interesting Alana. I wrote a couple of weeks ago, and I was critical of the Red Sox about how what they should do with the deadline and what they should do with Cora. And one of the things I said is, all right, let's pretend for a moment that someone other than John Henry owned the Boston Red Sox and that owner was hell bent on accelerating the team's stunning progress instead of fretting over how it might stall. That's kind of been their mo so I said, what's the first thing that owner would do? Throw Craig Council money at Alex Cora. That's right, Nor the talk from Cora about not wanting to negotiate during the season, Drop a forty million dollar offer on him and see how quickly he snaps to attention. Okay, the offer wasn't forty million. Frankly, coord probably didn't want five years. He's talked about not wanting to manage forever. But the offer was in the Council range and this was an important first step for them. The next step and their President of base Operations Chief baseball Officer Craig Breslow has said this. They want to upgrade the team, and this is a team that has had, despite the past few days, a remarkable season so far. They need to keep going.
00:07:11
Speaker 3: They had said, you know, money talks. There's that saying money talks. It doesn't matter if he didn't want to talk in the middle of the season. You throw a three year, twenty two million dollars deal at him. He's going to talk in the middle of the season.
00:07:22
Speaker 2: Kenny.
00:07:22
Speaker 3: Let me ask you this, though, how much of this do you think the decision was making sure that Alex Cora and Craig Breslow could work together simultaneously. Was any part of it, Let's just see how this fits before we move forward a lot.
00:07:35
Speaker 1: I'm sure that was part of it. And it's a great point you make there, because that relationship was starting anew They didn't really know each other all that well until Preslow took over. And we all know that the relationship between Cora and hein Bloom toward the end of last season, in particular after the deadline, was not good. They can say all they want, we know it was not good. So yes, that relationship is critical. And once Breslow's saw he could work with Cora, once he saw how Klora adapted to the new pitching program and ran the team, it spoke volumes to him.
00:08:08
Speaker 3: I'll tell you what, I never thought that we would be talking about the Saint Louis Cardinals ken in the postseason picture the way that they started the season. But they're right in the thicke of things as far as this is concerned. So time now for Grill and can we do have a question about the Redbirds and we can talk about it. You know, to me they need more starting pitching. I know they did sign some veteran arms, but everybody needs starting pitching right And the question here from Tyler is will the Cardinals add or spend up to the CBT at the deadline.
00:08:37
Speaker 1: I don't know that they'll go that far, and I don't know that it will be required to go that far. Generally speaking, about a third of a player's salary is left at the deadline, so it's not like you have to go crazy financially to improve your team. The real question is can the Cardinals get the starter they need? And a lot of you're right, they do need a starter. They had a bullpen game yesterday did not go great. And will they get additional right handed hitting because they are terrible against left handers. It's weird that a team with Paul Goldschmidt and Noan Arnatto are not hitting left handers. But Goldschmidt and Ornato have not been very good this season. That's part of the problem. They're also very left handed heavy, so I expect that they will try to upgrade and make a significant push for that. How it works out financially, I'm not so much worried about. They should have enough money to do what they want.
00:09:29
Speaker 3: Do you think Tampa Bay's Zach Eflin perhaps Ken would be a good fit. Does that make sense for you?
00:09:35
Speaker 1: Zach Eflind makes some sense. He's eleven million dollars this year, so probably about three and a half million remaining at the deadline, and then eighteen million dollars next year. And that's a concern for some teams. But at the same time, he's the kind of veteran, stable pitcher you want. Now, some teams are worried he has chronic knee problems. I get it, but he's pitched pretty much consistently last year and this year so well, I don't know that I would be so worried about that, and I would expect the Rays are going to move him. They've got Jeffrey Springs coming back, They've got Shane boz already back in the rotation, Shane McClanahan coming back next year. Some teams are more interested, or not more interested, but intrigued by Zach Lettel, who is a lot cheaper than Zach Eflin. But I can see them definitely wanting to move Eflyn. That's their ena, all right.
00:10:24
Speaker 3: Speaking of moving in the Tampa Bay Rays, the next question is from Trey B. How available is Randy Arosa Rena right now?
00:10:31
Speaker 1: Highly available? And cutting back to e Flyn a little bit, The Rays, as I wrote the other day, are generally reluctant, not opposed, but reluctant to trade guys who have signed with them multi year deals as free agents or guys who have signed below market deals in extensions. Rose Raina does not fit either category. He's going year to year and they're going to be less wedded to him than they will be to some of those other guys. E Flyn, Brandon lao Yondi, d as All of these guys who have signed below market or multi year free agent deals. Now it's not to say they won't trade those other guys. They will, but their preference, or at least without the commitment being made both ways, they don't have the same kind of commitment to the player going forward. So a rose arena who has not made that commitment to them, and they have not made that commitment to him, they would be more apt to trade him. And there is significant interest in him.
00:11:26
Speaker 3: You speak of the significant interest. Where do you think he's most likely to end up.
00:11:32
Speaker 1: The Dodgers are one possibility for sure, but really all teams that need offense are looking at him right now, and there are a lot of teams that need offense. It's an offensively down year for so many clubs, so many clubs are frustrated by their offenses. I'm thinking about Seattle and Texas, so those are clubs I can see where he would fit, and there are many others as well, and just not thinking of them off the top of my head right now.
00:11:57
Speaker 3: I'm fine with the I'm fine with the Dodgers, can no problem that I think he'd be. I think he'd fit perfectly there in Los Angeles. He seems like a Hollywood kind of guy. Let's talk a bit about the Chicago Cubs. They've made it clear that twenty twenty five is really more of their focus. In the twenty twenty four postseason. Stephen Bryant wants to know what about Cody Bellinger trade possible.
00:12:19
Speaker 1: I would say not possible, not going to happen. It's obviously possible. He has those complicated player options that if you get him and he's not good and he exercises the player options, you're kind of stuck with him at a high salary and it's not great. So that will make him a difficult guy to trade. And also if you're the Cubs, granted he has the player option that he might not return, but you want the possibility of him coming back next year. So it just seems to me that makes it more difficult. I don't expect the Cubs to be major sellers. They will probably move some of their bullpen pieces, but beyond that, I would say they'll be pretty quiet.
00:12:58
Speaker 3: Ken have disappointing. If it is disappointing to you, have the Cubs been this year? I mean, this is a team that you paid a lot of money to get Craig counseled. They treated him as the second coming in the Messiah in terms of managerial candidates.
00:13:10
Speaker 2: Were concerned.
00:13:11
Speaker 3: You know, are you surprised that they are where they are at this point in the season and that twenty twenty four is not the focus?
00:13:19
Speaker 1: Surprised and disappointed. Now, I'm not surprised that twenty twenty four is no longer their focus, because the way the season is progressed, it should not be. But I did think they would be better. And let's face it, they're not playing in the strongest of divisions. They're playing in a division where, yes, the Pirates are getting better, the Reds are getting better, the Cardinals are always competitive, we know that, and the Brewers we did not expect to see this out of them. But the Cubs should have been better. They've got good rotation, and yet they're one of these teams that offensively has been a disappointment. They've had bullpen injuries, but they didn't have the depth to withstand those injuries. So clearly this is a disappointing season for the North.
00:13:59
Speaker 2: Siders and the South Sliders.
00:14:01
Speaker 3: To take a look at the Chicago White Sox and I tell you what everyone's going to be trying to pick that team apart as far as pieces that they could use moving forward. This is the question. With Marte being a question mark this year and beyond, could you see the Mets trading for Luis Robert Junior and take over or take on the Ben and Tende contract to lower acquisition costs.
00:14:21
Speaker 1: Good question, good idea, and I'm not sure the Mets are totally there yet. Maybe they should be because they're more competitive than perhaps we thought at the start of the season when they were not going so well. But keep in mind their payroll is up way high, and every dollar they spend it's I don't know what it is at this point double essentially because of the luxury tax penalties that they're incurring. So Robert is not a ridiculously expensive player. It's something like twelve and a half million this year, and then a couple of options at twenty million or actually twelve and a half next year. Then the two club options kick in. But I would expect the White Sox do not want to diminish what they get back by attaching contracts. They need players, and they can afford Andrew Ben and Tendee and carry him as a sunk cost. They need the best possible deals they can make for Robert and Crochet, and it could turn out they wait until the offseason on Robert two because teams want to see him healthy. They want to see how he fares the rest of the year, and obviously, if he finishes the season healthy, at that point, you can still get him three more years. It's a pretty good player.
00:15:31
Speaker 3: I remember when the Ben and Tendy signing was such a big deal and we were looking forward to a positive outlook for the Chicago Whitesox.
00:15:38
Speaker 2: What a challenge that team is.
00:15:40
Speaker 3: But I believe they're twenty seven and seventy seven, So what is that fifty games under five hundred. Nathan Hicks wants to know from you, Ken, what are the chances that Baltimore trades Jackson Holiday. I certainly hope not. I know they need starting pitching. I know that they want to win now. But Jackson Holiday, to me, is is a franchise future player.
00:15:57
Speaker 2: What's your take.
00:15:58
Speaker 1: I would say the chances are exceedingly slim, and for the players that are available in this market, I just don't see how it makes sense. And let's look at Tarek Scooble, because that's the one, right, that's the guy that you would think, Okay, that's who you have to give up your best prospects for Tarek Scooble. You still get them for only two more years. You get Jackson Holiday for six more years. Tarrek Scooble is a pitcher. He has had Tommy John surgery, he had flex or tendon surgery. He's not a pristine health guy. And Jackson Holliday is a position player, and those players generally stay healthier. So if you believe in Holiday, and I'm sure the Orioles still believe in Holiday, then why would you do that. It doesn't really make much sense. Holliday is going to be their second basement, probably pretty soon, and at that point they'll have him and Henderson up the middle. That's their dream scenario. Obviously, the Orioles need pitching and they need a controllable starter, at least one of them. They've got to replace guys next year, including most likely Corbyn Burns. But I don't think you give up Jackson Holiday to do that. You try to do a Scooble trade, which by the way, is extremely unlikely with other players.
00:17:09
Speaker 2: You mentioned Corbyn Burns.
00:17:11
Speaker 3: Is that a long term extension type of situation that the Oriols could get themselves into or do you think that that's not something that they would want to do.
00:17:19
Speaker 1: Oh, they'd want to do it. But he's represented by Scott Boris, and I'm quite certain that Scott Boris wants to go into the open market with Corbyn Burns. And some Oriols fans have mentioned to me, well, hey, we've got a new owner, why can't we be the team to pay Corbyn Burns. They could be, but I don't expect Michael Elias to be throwing two hundred million dollars to a pitcher. I just don't see that.
00:17:40
Speaker 2: Happening, especially not at Corbyn Burns's age.
00:17:43
Speaker 3: At this point, let's talk about the San Diego Padres for just a second, real baseball, real talk baseball. Rather, will the Padres make moves? They're in it, I mean they're right there ken in the wild card race. They're not going to win the division unlikely, so they're in it. Though, do they make moves? You know that Aj Preller likes to make moves.
00:18:00
Speaker 1: Answer that question with a question, when is Aj Preller ever taking a back seat in a trading period. He will make moves. He knows what he needs. Obviously, it's starting pitching and bullpen help. Bullpen help at one point was the priority. Now with the lingering questions about Darvish and Musgrove, I'm not so sure it's still the priority. Maybe it's one A and one B. So yes, I expect them fully to be active and we'll see where it goes.
00:18:25
Speaker 3: Are you surprised that there are twenty two teams buying only eight likely selling? I mean, is this one of the weirder trade deadline periods for you that you can remember?
00:18:36
Speaker 1: It is in certain respects, but it's also a product of the expanded playoffs and teams have a chance. There are also greater incentives now for teams to compete. The draft lottery has helped in that regard, So I can't say I'm totally surprised. This to me seems like the way it's going to be going forward, Alana, because of the expanded playoffs and more teams having a chance. Now, it's interesting is that the Union feared going to expand the playoffs because it would lessen the incentives for teams to spend spending is almost a separate issue. I don't believe it. It has had that effect. It seems to me more teams like the Pirates and the Royals and the Brewers to a certain extent, that they've been good. These teams. The Tigers are another one. They want to be good now. They're tired of losing. Even the A's are not interested right now in trading Mason Miller or Brent Rooker because they want to go forward. That's a healthy thing for the sport.
00:19:33
Speaker 3: I agree with that completely. All right, we're going to come back. Thanks for all the questions here on grill and Ken will be right back. After a quick thought from Eric Kratz and Scott Braun and are friends.

00:21:06
Speaker 2: All right.
00:21:06
Speaker 3: Time out for Dude and Dork of the Week. This is the opportunity that Ken and I have to pick a dude and a dork. Ken will go ahead and start with dude, who's yours.
00:21:15
Speaker 1: I'm going to go with teams for both dude and dork, and I'm going to stick to the New York City environs. Dude of the week, it's the dudes of the week. It's the Mets, and it's the Mets because they have done something fairly remarkable. They've kind of risen from a bad place, put it that way, and we saw in the last two nights what they did to the Yankees and winning the Subway Series. In sweeping the Subway Series, they're back in it. They are buyers. They badly need bullpen help. But Francisco Lindor in particular, for due to the week, here's a guy that Met fans have been kind of hard on at times, and here's a guy who also is someone who is playing at an extremely high level, back to the Cleveland level. So the Mets are the dudes of the week for the torture that they inflicted on their crosstown rivals.
00:22:02
Speaker 3: I am with you, Ken Rosenthal. I am on this train as well. My Dude of the Week is Francisco Lindor. The reason being Anthony DoCoMo brought up a huge point. He said, here's the complete list of Major League Baseball players with at least fifty home runs and fifty stolen basis since the start of last season. Francisco Lindor, that's the list.
00:22:22
Speaker 2: That's it.
00:22:23
Speaker 3: So congratulations to him, and then of course looking to find his daughter Callina after the home run that he hit. A big family man. I love their family. So congratulations to Francisco Lindor, and congratulations to the Mets as well. Before we get to Dork of the Week, Ken, let's talk a little bit about our Baseballism shirts here. We are very happy to have Baseballism as a partner on fair territory, foul territory, Dodgers territory, all the territory.
00:22:47
Speaker 2: So I love that when I have that one as well.
00:22:48
Speaker 3: Mine says she doesn't ask questions of baseball games, she answers them.
00:22:52
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's yes.
00:22:55
Speaker 3: So check out baseballism dot com. They're a good partner of ours. They're also great partners of mine for Gudry's Foundation. We appreciate them very much. Great gear, awesome clothes. We love it, we love it, we love it all right, dork of the week, who's yours?
00:23:08
Speaker 1: The Yankees and the Yankees. I don't want to get into a cliche here, because it is a cliche among Yankee fans. But the cliche goes, if George was alive, if George Steinbrenner was alive, and they would have just gotten crushed by the Mets, somebody would have gotten fired this morning. Now I'm not saying that's necessarily the right thing to do, but there was an accountability and there was a demand for excellence that existed back then that exists in another form now. It's not like the Yankees want to be bad, but my gosh, they've collapsed. They are a team that has lost twenty two of its last thirty two games. They are a team that, as my friend Joel Sherman and the New York Posts wrote, cannot be fixed necessarily at the deadline. They need probably two relievers and two bats. Lots of luck getting all that, and even if you do, you still need better performances from the players you have. And Louis he should have been in the Dude of the Week category as well when he said joking with his Yankee you guys have only two good hitters. He was absolutely right and it was true. Words were never spoken. So the Yankees or Dorks of the week, they cannot snap out of it. This is something that has my Yankee fan friends and I have friends who are fans of every team, but my Yankee fan friends are losing it right now, losing it.
00:24:25
Speaker 3: That would mean that you at least have thirty friends, Ken, and I find that very very true, very true. Yes, John Carlos, Stanton's always heard. DJ Lmayhew is performing way below where he's supposed to be. Anthony Rizzo's not there, He wasn't playing well to begin with. You have Stanton, or excuse me, you have Soda, you have Judge. And that's really it for the New York Yankee. So Luisa Verno was spot on. My dorks of the week are the Oakland Athletics, and I feel like we do this every single week.
00:24:49
Speaker 2: We don't, we don't try to, but they make it really easy.
00:24:52
Speaker 3: They have decided that they are going to lay off over half of their non baseball operation staff. This coming from Susan Slusser, who does a great job covering many things in the Bay Area as give notice too, as much as half of their non baseball operations employees. This is beyond awful. One tells me which departments have been decimated, plus severance info. She has it there on the San Francisco Chronicle. I mean, they can't get out of their own way. I mean, why are you laying off? Is it because they're moving the Sacramento I mean they just this is a team that makes money, hand over fist. I don't think there's I know that there's not a team out there that doesn't make money, and they just make all of the wrong decisions.
00:25:33
Speaker 1: I would imagine the move does have something to do with it, But my goodness, there are ways to handle things, and I don't know exactly how this was handled. I can't say I'm inside on this at all, but you're absolutely right, Alon, and we have to look at with them the big picture, and in the big picture, it's one tone deaf act after another. And that's why it's the John Fisher Dork of the Week Award, which really.
00:25:58
Speaker 2: Is yea, yeah, it really is.
00:26:00
Speaker 3: I mean again, they make it easy for us to choose these things, all right, before we let you go, what do you anticipate your next five days to be like I mean, this is a nuts timeframe for you.
00:26:12
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's busy, and actually I'm flying cross country today to Boston. Our Fox game Saturday is Yankees at Red Sox, and then I'm flying cross country Sunday. So let's hope the Wi Fi works. That's always an issue. And it's very busy a lot, and there's no question about it, and there's one hundred things going on at all times.
