00:00:06.110 --> 00:00:06.320
Bondi.
00:00:06.740 --> 00:00:12.410
Welcome to exploring Tim Este, the podcast that talks about Southeast Asia's best kept travel secret.
00:00:12.710 --> 00:00:17.660
I'm your host Jte, and I'll share firsthand insights, expert interviews and practical travel tips.
00:00:17.960 --> 00:00:22.309
Whether you're a traveler, a cultural lover, or just curious about places rarely covered in the mainstream.
00:00:22.519 --> 00:00:23.480
You're in the right place.
00:00:23.570 --> 00:00:24.800
Let's explore two more.
00:00:24.800 --> 00:00:25.219
Less day.
00:00:31.867 --> 00:00:35.078
In today's episode, I wanna give you an idea for some itineraries.
00:00:35.078 --> 00:00:40.957
So if you are planning to visit two more less day, this will give you some ideas about how you can structure your visit.
00:00:41.457 --> 00:00:43.317
I'll talk about five day trips.
00:00:43.317 --> 00:00:51.307
You can do from Dili, five overnighter, two day trips you can do from Dili, and three trips where you'll allow at least three days to complete them.
00:00:51.578 --> 00:00:56.887
So hopefully these will give you some ideas of combinations to make the most of your time into Leste.
00:00:57.387 --> 00:00:59.188
To start with the day trips from Dili.
00:00:59.398 --> 00:01:02.968
The most popular and obvious place to visit is ET Island.
00:01:03.237 --> 00:01:13.097
I've talked about this extensively on other podcasts is a beautiful place, a must visit if you are coming to Timor, Now, I'd recommend that you spend a few days there.
00:01:13.097 --> 00:01:15.438
It's a very nice place to spend some time and relax.
00:01:15.498 --> 00:01:18.227
But if you only have one day, you can go to ATAR roof for the day.
00:01:18.507 --> 00:01:23.218
Get the ferry out in the morning, you get a few hours on the island, and then get the ferry back.
00:01:23.268 --> 00:01:29.447
The best place for UpToDate information about traveling to Aro Island is on the website of Barry's Place.
00:01:29.597 --> 00:01:36.528
Under getting here, Barry updates that regularly with the latest services as I record this in mid 2025.
00:01:36.798 --> 00:01:39.138
There were ferry services five days a week.
00:01:39.638 --> 00:01:42.608
To get the most time on the island though, you wanna get the dragon boat.
00:01:42.668 --> 00:01:46.837
These are the fast boats that take about an hour and a half to get to Aru.
00:01:47.018 --> 00:01:51.968
The other ferries take more like three to three and a half hours, so obviously you get less time on the island.
00:01:52.388 --> 00:01:53.798
So if you get Dragon boat out.
00:01:54.218 --> 00:02:01.177
And back on the same day, you're probably gonna have three to four hours on the island, which is plenty of time to look around the markets.
00:02:01.177 --> 00:02:02.408
Particularly on a Saturday.
00:02:02.677 --> 00:02:04.867
Maybe have a quick walk around the village of Beloit.
00:02:05.108 --> 00:02:07.147
And the main attraction obviously is snorkeling.
00:02:07.388 --> 00:02:12.598
And if you go to Barry's place, you can rent gear and organize boats to go and snorkel in the, in a reef.
00:02:13.057 --> 00:02:24.518
Can also snorkel directly off the beach just south of the wharf, there is a reef there, which is okay, but the inner reef is definitely the place to go to if you can, which does require a local fishing boat to take you out.
00:02:24.518 --> 00:02:31.573
It's a very short boat ride of a few minutes, but it's too far to Safely Swim, If you only do one day trip from Dili, I would recommend ET Island.
00:02:32.073 --> 00:02:41.823
A second day trip idea is to go out to, so this is to the west of Dili, and it's very durable, particularly if you have your own transport, like hiring a car or a scooter.
00:02:41.872 --> 00:02:43.372
The road is in decent condition.
00:02:43.402 --> 00:02:56.812
You can visit the historic Apollo Prison uh, uba, which has a, for a church and a, and a lake and town, which is a massacre site, a church, and some seafront restaurants all in the day with about two and a half hours driving.
00:02:57.173 --> 00:03:03.432
It is technically possible to do it by local bus, but the buses may be infrequent, so you do risk getting stuck there.
00:03:03.432 --> 00:03:05.323
I think if you just went to one place and came back.
00:03:05.603 --> 00:03:10.763
You probably could, but if you want to visit multiple sites in, that's quite difficult without your own transport.
00:03:11.263 --> 00:03:14.413
Another option as a day trip is to head up to Glen O.
00:03:14.473 --> 00:03:18.432
This is the largest town in Amira and it has a huge church.
00:03:18.492 --> 00:03:29.532
And on the way you can stop at KO to visit the Gecko Cafe, there are local buses up there, or if you've got your own transport allowed, two and a half hours in total for driving to Glen Oak and back.
00:03:29.592 --> 00:03:33.573
The road is steep and winding, but it is a sealed and well maintained road.
00:03:34.073 --> 00:03:35.782
Another option is Salo Crack.
00:03:35.812 --> 00:03:40.402
This is home to a beautiful lagoon filled with water, lilies and surrounded by rice fields.
00:03:40.643 --> 00:03:42.622
Need to allow at least three hours for driving.
00:03:42.622 --> 00:03:47.962
If you're gonna go there in a day, take the road to a layer, and before you get into a layer, you turn off right.
00:03:47.962 --> 00:03:50.092
And it's about a 20 to 30 minute detour.
00:03:50.362 --> 00:03:54.332
The road does get significantly worse once you get off the main road.
00:03:54.393 --> 00:04:05.323
And actually, if you can go from soy crack onto Glen o and that road is quite a bad road, so you need your own transport to get to soy crack, but it is a very nice place to visit or continue along that road to aeo.
00:04:05.353 --> 00:04:06.883
That's a very pleasant day trip.
00:04:07.122 --> 00:04:08.652
You've got a cooler climate up there.
00:04:08.862 --> 00:04:11.832
There's mountain views, there's good places to have lunch.
00:04:12.073 --> 00:04:15.643
There's a couple of notable memorials and there's some busy markets on a Saturday.
00:04:15.883 --> 00:04:17.293
It's a very winding road.
00:04:17.353 --> 00:04:19.903
It's about an hour and a half from Dilly to Alejo.
00:04:20.083 --> 00:04:25.543
And the longest piece of straight road is probably, maybe, I dunno, a hundred meters, like the whole way you are going left right.
00:04:25.543 --> 00:04:28.692
So if you get carsick, you might want to give this one a miss.
00:04:28.843 --> 00:04:32.173
But if you're on a motorbike, it's quite good fun to take the winding road.
00:04:32.173 --> 00:04:36.702
And you do get some beautiful views back towards Dilly and the coastline for when you get up into the hills.
00:04:37.202 --> 00:04:39.153
So those can all be done in one day.
00:04:39.153 --> 00:04:40.233
Obviously, you can spend longer.
00:04:40.283 --> 00:04:41.033
If you wish.
00:04:41.242 --> 00:04:42.142
Now two day trips.
00:04:42.142 --> 00:04:44.093
I would start by recommending au.
00:04:44.273 --> 00:04:51.413
This is the second largest city in Timor-Leste and it's home to one four historic buildings and the only real large public swimming pool in the country.
00:04:51.502 --> 00:04:56.963
It's about a two and a half hour drive, one way from Dili along a stunning coastline on some of the best roads in the country.
00:04:57.173 --> 00:04:59.812
So head out in the morning, have a nice afternoon there.
00:04:59.812 --> 00:05:02.992
Go relax at the pool, see some of the sites, stay overnight.
00:05:02.992 --> 00:05:12.252
There's a few different accommodation options, and then come back the next day Another good two day option is Bella Ball, and that is three to four hours drive one way from Dili.
00:05:12.252 --> 00:05:17.742
So it gets a bit too far to do in a day, but certainly as a two day trip, it's great.
00:05:17.952 --> 00:05:19.663
Now on the way you're gonna travel through.
00:05:20.163 --> 00:05:27.122
So potentially you could visit some of those sites I mentioned earlier and then stay in BBO at the historic BBO Fort Hotel.
00:05:27.512 --> 00:05:31.413
Visit some of the sites in BBO the following morning, and then head back to Dili.
00:05:31.682 --> 00:05:38.733
I'd also recommend that you stop in at ABI on the way the D two UMA Cafe has fantastic views of the rice fields.
00:05:39.233 --> 00:05:46.552
Another popular two day option is to go to Mount Ramlow, which is the highest point in Tim Leste, just under 3000 meters high.
00:05:47.052 --> 00:05:56.593
Allow two and a half to three hours driving one way from Dili with some challenging road conditions towards the end, requiring a four wheel drive vehicle or very good motorbike skills.
00:05:56.833 --> 00:06:10.202
You'll stay in the beautiful village of hat bco, which is the highest in two more less day, and a lot of people would go out there and you get up about two 30 in the morning to hike to the summit of Ramal for sunrise at around 6:00 AM.
00:06:10.702 --> 00:06:16.942
I didn't like to get up so early, so I went for sunset set instead and then came down in the evening and headed the next day.
00:06:17.423 --> 00:06:25.812
A lot of people may just go up to see Mount Rameau, but I highly recommend trying to factor in time to visit the Docker Marley waterfall, which is probably the most impressive in the country.
00:06:25.963 --> 00:06:33.252
It's about 45 minutes down the road from obesity and also to spend a bit of time in ha to Ko an hour or two at least wandering around the village.
00:06:33.283 --> 00:06:34.632
'cause there's quite a few things to see and do.
00:06:35.132 --> 00:06:38.283
Now on the way to Mount Ram out is moi, so that's another option.
00:06:38.283 --> 00:06:46.913
If you don't have a four wheel drive vehicle, you can still enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery from that's about a two and a half hour drive, one way from Dili along good roads the whole way.
00:06:47.413 --> 00:06:51.942
Now, one of my favorite two day trips, which you can do over a weekend, is to visit a kui.
00:06:52.543 --> 00:06:56.552
this is Timor's enclave, completely surrounded by Indonesia.
00:06:56.552 --> 00:06:58.862
From Dili, overnight ferries and overland buses.
00:06:58.862 --> 00:07:00.182
Take the best part of 12 hours.
00:07:00.483 --> 00:07:06.483
Or you can fly with Aly in 35 minutes and there's flights that leave on Friday afternoon and return Monday morning.
00:07:06.483 --> 00:07:13.762
So it's three nights, but it's really two days, and that's about the ideal amount of time to spend exploring this little visited part of Timor-Leste.
00:07:14.262 --> 00:07:16.307
Now, a few ideas for longer trips than that.
00:07:16.307 --> 00:07:26.418
So Jao Island is technically possible to visit in a weekend, but as it involves 12 to 16 hours of driving to get there and back, that doesn't need much time to explore the place.
00:07:26.598 --> 00:07:33.708
So it's better to spread it out over three days and break up the journey in alco and com and expect the road to come to be quite decent.
00:07:33.708 --> 00:07:37.187
But from calm through to Jaco Island, that is pretty bad.
00:07:37.187 --> 00:07:39.947
So you do need some decent transport to get that far.
00:07:40.447 --> 00:07:40.958
Another option.
00:07:40.958 --> 00:07:45.877
As I mentioned at the beginning, at Aru Island, you can visit in one day, but two or three days is much better.
00:07:45.877 --> 00:07:51.387
You get a real chance to enjoy island time My final suggestion is to go to Bagilla.
00:07:51.447 --> 00:07:53.668
Now, this is really for adventure travelers.
00:07:53.718 --> 00:07:56.447
I'd say far few people visit here than Jao Island.
00:07:56.627 --> 00:07:59.838
It's less well known, but arguably more interesting and spectacular.
00:08:00.108 --> 00:08:06.617
So here you can stay at another historic fault, the Bagge Fort, which is a very nice place to stay surrounded by mountains.
00:08:06.798 --> 00:08:09.333
And you can hike up to the summit of Mat Bien.
00:08:09.458 --> 00:08:15.247
Which is the second highest peak in Timor-Leste that is significantly more challenging than Mount Ramala.
00:08:15.468 --> 00:08:18.798
To get to Bigge is a five hour drive, one way from Dili.
00:08:19.007 --> 00:08:27.598
Along the coast, there are decent roads, so you're heading through to Baal, then you go a bit further to lga, and then you start heading inland, and the roads get very rough.
00:08:27.627 --> 00:08:33.707
When I visited here in late 2024, there was some road construction underway, which will certainly improve the journey.
00:08:34.133 --> 00:08:35.633
I'm not sure it's gonna go all the way to Bagge.
00:08:35.932 --> 00:08:50.812
It's probably the first section only, so you do need a four wheel drive vehicle or very good motorbike skills, but for those who have the time energy and adventure to get out to bagge, I would really recommend it as an off the beaten track gem in somewhere that's not very well explored.
00:08:51.312 --> 00:08:54.793
Hopefully that has given you some ideas of various things you can do in Timor less day.
00:08:55.003 --> 00:09:02.143
as always, look on the exploring timor.com website to find more ideas about how you can explore this beautiful country.

The road is steep and winding, but it is a sealed and well maintained road.
00:03:34.073 --> 00:03:35.782
Another option is Salo Crack.
00:03:35.812 --> 00:03:40.402
This is home to a beautiful lagoon filled with water, lilies and surrounded by rice fields.
00:03:40.643 --> 00:03:42.622
Need to allow at least three hours for driving.
00:03:42.622 --> 00:03:47.962
If you're gonna go there in a day, take the road to a layer, and before you get into a layer, you turn off right.
00:03:47.962 --> 00:03:50.092
And it's about a 20 to 30 minute detour.
00:03:50.362 --> 00:03:54.332
The road does get significantly worse once you get off the main road.
00:03:54.393 --> 00:04:05.323
And actually, if you can go from soy crack onto Glen o and that road is quite a bad road, so you need your own transport to get to soy crack, but it is a very nice place to visit or continue along that road to aeo.
00:04:05.353 --> 00:04:06.883
That's a very pleasant day trip.
00:04:07.122 --> 00:04:08.652
You've got a cooler climate up there.
00:04:08.862 --> 00:04:11.832
There's mountain views, there's good places to have lunch.
00:04:12.073 --> 00:04:15.643
There's a couple of notable memorials and there's some busy markets on a Saturday.
00:04:15.883 --> 00:04:17.293
It's a very winding road.
00:04:17.353 --> 00:04:19.903
It's about an hour and a half from Dilly to Alejo.
00:04:20.083 --> 00:04:25.543
And the longest piece of straight road is probably, maybe, I dunno, a hundred meters, like the whole way you are going left right.
00:04:25.543 --> 00:04:28.692
So if you get carsick, you might want to give this one a miss.
00:04:28.843 --> 00:04:32.173
But if you're on a motorbike, it's quite good fun to take the winding road.
00:04:32.173 --> 00:04:36.702
And you do get some beautiful views back towards Dilly and the coastline for when you get up into the hills.
00:04:37.202 --> 00:04:39.153
So those can all be done in one day.
00:04:39.153 --> 00:04:40.233
Obviously, you can spend longer.
00:04:40.283 --> 00:04:41.033
If you wish.
00:04:41.242 --> 00:04:42.142
Now two day trips.
00:04:42.142 --> 00:04:44.093
I would start by recommending au.
00:04:44.273 --> 00:04:51.413
This is the second largest city in Timor-Leste and it's home to one four historic buildings and the only real large public swimming pool in the country.
00:04:51.502 --> 00:04:56.963
It's about a two and a half hour drive, one way from Dili along a stunning coastline on some of the best roads in the country.
00:04:57.173 --> 00:04:59.812
So head out in the morning, have a nice afternoon there.
00:04:59.812 --> 00:05:02.992
Go relax at the pool, see some of the sites, stay overnight.
00:05:02.992 --> 00:05:12.252
There's a few different accommodation options, and then come back the next day Another good two day option is Bella Ball, and that is three to four hours drive one way from Dili.
00:05:12.252 --> 00:05:17.742
So it gets a bit too far to do in a day, but certainly as a two day trip, it's great.
00:05:17.952 --> 00:05:19.663
Now on the way you're gonna travel through.
00:05:20.163 --> 00:05:27.122
So potentially you could visit some of those sites I mentioned earlier and then stay in BBO at the historic BBO Fort Hotel.
00:05:27.512 --> 00:05:31.413
Visit some of the sites in BBO the following morning, and then head back to Dili.
00:05:31.682 --> 00:05:38.733
I'd also recommend that you stop in at ABI on the way the D two UMA Cafe has fantastic views of the rice fields.
00:05:39.233 --> 00:05:46.552
Another popular two day option is to go to Mount Ramlow, which is the highest point in Tim Leste, just under 3000 meters high.
00:05:47.052 --> 00:05:56.593
Allow two and a half to three hours driving one way from Dili with some challenging road conditions towards the end, requiring a four wheel drive vehicle or very good motorbike skills.
00:05:56.833 --> 00:06:10.202
You'll stay in the beautiful village of hat bco, which is the highest in two more less day, and a lot of people would go out there and you get up about two 30 in the morning to hike to the summit of Ramal for sunrise at around 6:00 AM.
00:06:10.702 --> 00:06:16.942
I didn't like to get up so early, so I went for sunset set instead and then came down in the evening and headed the next day.
00:06:17.423 --> 00:06:25.812
A lot of people may just go up to see Mount Rameau, but I highly recommend trying to factor in time to visit the Docker Marley waterfall, which is probably the most impressive in the country.
00:06:25.963 --> 00:06:33.252
It's about 45 minutes down the road from obesity and also to spend a bit of time in ha to Ko an hour or two at least wandering around the village.
00:06:33.283 --> 00:06:34.632
'cause there's quite a few things to see and do.
00:06:35.132 --> 00:06:38.283
Now on the way to Mount Ram out is moi, so that's another option.
00:06:38.283 --> 00:06:46.913
If you don't have a four wheel drive vehicle, you can still enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery from that's about a two and a half hour drive, one way from Dili along good roads the whole way.
00:06:47.413 --> 00:06:51.942
Now, one of my favorite two day trips, which you can do over a weekend, is to visit a kui.
00:06:52.543 --> 00:06:56.552
this is Timor's enclave, completely surrounded by Indonesia.
00:06:56.552 --> 00:06:58.862
From Dili, overnight ferries and overland buses.
00:06:58.862 --> 00:07:00.182
Take the best part of 12 hours.
00:07:00.483 --> 00:07:06.483
Or you can fly with Aly in 35 minutes and there's flights that leave on Friday afternoon and return Monday morning.
00:07:06.483 --> 00:07:13.762
So it's three nights, but it's really two days, and that's about the ideal amount of time to spend exploring this little visited part of Timor-Leste.
00:07:14.262 --> 00:07:16.307
Now, a few ideas for longer trips than that.
00:07:16.307 --> 00:07:26.418
So Jao Island is technically possible to visit in a weekend, but as it involves 12 to 16 hours of driving to get there and back, that doesn't need much time to explore the place.
00:07:26.598 --> 00:07:33.708
So it's better to spread it out over three days and break up the journey in alco and com and expect the road to come to be quite decent.
00:07:33.708 --> 00:07:37.187
But from calm through to Jaco Island, that is pretty bad.
00:07:37.187 --> 00:07:39.947
So you do need some decent transport to get that far.
00:07:40.447 --> 00:07:40.958
Another option.
00:07:40.958 --> 00:07:45.877
As I mentioned at the beginning, at Aru Island, you can visit in one day, but two or three days is much better.
00:07:45.877 --> 00:07:51.387
You get a real chance to enjoy island time My final suggestion is to go to Bagilla.
00:07:51.447 --> 00:07:53.668
Now, this is really for adventure travelers.
00:07:53.718 --> 00:07:56.447
I'd say far few people visit here than Jao Island.
00:07:56.627 --> 00:07:59.838
It's less well known, but arguably more interesting and spectacular.
00:08:00.108 --> 00:08:06.617
So here you can stay at another historic fault, the Bagge Fort, which is a very nice place to stay surrounded by mountains.
00:08:06.798 --> 00:08:09.333
And you can hike up to the summit of Mat Bien.
00:08:09.458 --> 00:08:15.247
Which is the second highest peak in Timor-Leste that is significantly more challenging than Mount Ramala.
00:08:15.468 --> 00:08:18.798
To get to Bigge is a five hour drive, one way from Dili.
00:08:19.007 --> 00:08:27.598
Along the coast, there are decent roads, so you're heading through to Baal, then you go a bit further to lga, and then you start heading inland, and the roads get very rough.
00:08:27.627 --> 00:08:33.707
When I visited here in late 2024, there was some road construction underway, which will certainly improve the journey.
00:08:34.133 --> 00:08:35.633
I'm not sure it's gonna go all the way to Bagge.
00:08:35.932 --> 00:08:50.812
It's probably the first section only, so you do need a four wheel drive vehicle or very good motorbike skills, but for those who have the time energy and adventure to get out to bagge, I would really recommend it as an off the beaten track gem in somewhere that's not very well explored.
00:08:51.312 --> 00:08:54.793
Hopefully that has given you some ideas of various things you can do in Timor less day.
00:08:55.003 --> 00:09:02.143
