Forging the Future Leader: 6 Practices to Build a Kingdom-Ready Team

In this episode, I’m sharing six discipleship-shaped practices that turn teams into greenhouses for future leaders: (1) measure potential as well as performance, (2) delegate real authority while keeping accountability, (3) mentor with identity and mission in view, (4) balance HEAD, HEART, HANDS for 2030-readiness, (5) make delegation a muscle using the SWIM model, and (6) cultivate trust and mission clarity so purpose, not perks, keeps people engaged. You’ll walk away with tools you can use this week, including a 70-20-10 growth plan, a five-rung Delegation Ladder, the 4-S mentoring rhythm, and a simple debrief that builds leadership endurance.

Key Takeaways

• Potential > performance alone. Look for learning agility, values alignment, and influence instinct; utilize the 70-20-10 framework (stretch, mentoring, formal learning).
• Authority with accountability. Use the Delegation Ladder (Tell → Sell → Test → Consult → Delegate) and set metrics and checkpoints.
• Mentoring multiplies. Try the 4-S rhythm: Story, Scripture, Skills, Stretch.
• HEAD, HEART, HANDS. Think: critical thinking, empathy-driven collaboration, and disciplined execution.
• Delegation is a muscle. Use SWIM: Situation, Wanted outcome, Instructions, Metrics; then debrief: What worked? What didn’t? What’s next?
• Trust & purpose trump perks. Connect role → team mission → Kingdom impact; celebrate wins and honest lessons publicly.

Reflection Questions

1. Which practice is your current blind spot, and why?
2. Name three emerging leaders near you. What stretch assignment will you offer one of them this week?
3. How can you reframe an upcoming project to showcase its Kingdom impact?
