When Cops Catch the Killer of _American Sniper_ Chris Kyle

WEBVTT
1
00:00:00.040 --> 00:00:01.720
And I still got tons of people that are eating
2
00:00:01.720 --> 00:00:05.799
on my soul right now.
3
00:00:06.799 --> 00:00:09.480
I knew if I did not take out of his soul,
4
00:00:09.679 --> 00:00:11.080
he was coming to take my neck.
5
00:00:22.199 --> 00:00:25.839
On the night of February two, twenty thirteen, officers with
6
00:00:25.879 --> 00:00:29.359
the Lancaster Police Department respond to a call informing them
7
00:00:29.399 --> 00:00:32.759
that a suspect who committed a horrendous act was sitting
8
00:00:32.840 --> 00:00:36.560
in a stolen truck just outside his residents. Despite their
9
00:00:36.560 --> 00:00:39.119
efforts to coax him out of the truck, he suddenly
10
00:00:39.200 --> 00:00:42.719
takes off, leading police on a dangerous high speed chase.
11
00:00:56.799 --> 00:00:59.399
As the suspect turns a corner, he can be seen
12
00:00:59.479 --> 00:01:02.359
jumping the curb and driving at dangerous speeds down a
13
00:01:02.399 --> 00:01:06.280
residential sidewalk. However, this is still only the beginning of
14
00:01:06.319 --> 00:01:09.319
the strange turns and bizarre events this case is going
15
00:01:09.359 --> 00:01:10.079
to expose.
16
00:01:13.319 --> 00:01:37.760
But I'm all the dam of the North.
17
00:01:45.840 --> 00:01:53.879
The He's going wealk.
18
00:01:53.560 --> 00:01:59.959
You on the serv road, going on the fervent row.
19
00:02:01.879 --> 00:02:04.439
The events leading up to this moment began hours ago
20
00:02:04.560 --> 00:02:08.719
when an emergency call was placed as Somerville County dispatchers.
21
00:02:08.280 --> 00:02:11.800
Nine, where's your emergency? Yes, ma'am, I need a ambulance
22
00:02:11.840 --> 00:02:13.960
out to Rough Creek Lodge or resort.
23
00:02:14.240 --> 00:02:17.159
Okay Rough Creek Lodge and what's going on?
24
00:02:18.120 --> 00:02:21.719
I just had a report of two unconscious men out
25
00:02:21.759 --> 00:02:24.599
at my long range shooting range.
26
00:02:24.719 --> 00:02:28.159
Deputies arrived to find two deceased men with multiple gunshot
27
00:02:28.199 --> 00:02:32.560
wounds lying near a scattering of shellcasings. The suspect had
28
00:02:32.599 --> 00:02:34.879
fled the scene in a truck belonging to one of
29
00:02:34.879 --> 00:02:39.319
the victims, and his identity is unknown. The Texas Rangers
30
00:02:39.319 --> 00:02:41.479
are called to investigate and informed that one of the
31
00:02:41.560 --> 00:02:45.599
victims is a widely known public figure. Immediately, news of
32
00:02:45.639 --> 00:02:49.639
his death begins to spread like wildfire. The suspect would
33
00:02:49.680 --> 00:02:52.479
soon be identified as his sister would call nine one
34
00:02:52.560 --> 00:02:55.360
one to say her brother, twenty five year old Eddie
35
00:02:55.439 --> 00:02:58.120
ray Routh, came to her home and confessed to the
36
00:02:58.199 --> 00:03:02.759
killings before fleeing once again. She then called her mother, Jody,
37
00:03:02.840 --> 00:03:07.000
who contacted Detective Chevra. Eddie's the next door neighbor and friend.
38
00:03:07.879 --> 00:03:10.960
Upon learning Eddie was involved, he races to his home
39
00:03:11.000 --> 00:03:13.680
to search for him. It isn't long before he pulls
40
00:03:13.759 --> 00:03:16.120
up to the home in the stolen truck with no
41
00:03:16.240 --> 00:03:17.599
intention of surrendering.
42
00:03:19.000 --> 00:03:26.159
Watch it right, Grace hum backing up backing up.
43
00:03:26.280 --> 00:03:30.680
Hey, he got going, he don't down lot on, give
44
00:03:30.759 --> 00:03:31.800
it loot, Ronald.
45
00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:35.840
In the situation that is only going to grow more tins.
46
00:03:36.120 --> 00:03:39.280
Officers don't know yet that they've barely scratched the surface
47
00:03:39.319 --> 00:03:46.360
of this sinister case. And it's peculiar. Suspect.
48
00:03:46.520 --> 00:03:53.719
Watch it, see hen Henny turn it off, Hanny, hand
49
00:03:53.759 --> 00:04:04.280
it on, Henny, turn it up. Please, Eddie, the sergeant logan, turn.
50
00:04:04.199 --> 00:04:05.520
Off the truck guy, Come talk to you.
51
00:04:05.599 --> 00:04:07.919
What you come on with your hands open, Bud, He's
52
00:04:07.919 --> 00:04:08.560
not worth it.
53
00:04:10.240 --> 00:04:22.399
I'm gonna shoot out the tires. Eddie, Eddie, Eddie comes over, Eddie,
54
00:04:23.199 --> 00:04:25.439
Come on, God, Eddie, come talking.
55
00:04:31.240 --> 00:04:31.959
Come on, Eddie.
56
00:04:33.680 --> 00:04:37.439
The officers appear on edge, knowing there are firearms inside
57
00:04:37.439 --> 00:04:41.120
the truck. Given his friendship with the suspect, officers quickly
58
00:04:41.160 --> 00:04:44.680
call on Detective Chevra to step in, seemingly hopeful that
59
00:04:44.759 --> 00:04:48.160
he may be able to de escalate this outlandish situation.
60
00:04:49.560 --> 00:04:52.560
Man, hey, let's keep you. Yes you talk to you,
61
00:04:52.639 --> 00:04:55.319
Yes you come on, Yes you're gonna talk to you.
62
00:04:55.680 --> 00:04:55.920
Eddie.
63
00:04:57.040 --> 00:05:00.319
Al Right, look guy, I know this isn't really blad
64
00:05:00.439 --> 00:05:00.759
right now.
65
00:05:00.879 --> 00:05:04.240
Well, if you're off scared here too, Okay to be
66
00:05:04.360 --> 00:05:04.879
a favorite.
67
00:05:05.160 --> 00:05:06.040
Can Gary clarity?
68
00:05:06.160 --> 00:05:09.360
Just check the trunk off for a minute, you off things, Okay,
69
00:05:10.079 --> 00:05:11.519
turn it off for a minute. Earn it off for
70
00:05:11.560 --> 00:05:13.120
a second to learn it off and talk to me.
71
00:05:13.199 --> 00:05:13.480
Okay.
72
00:05:13.920 --> 00:05:15.959
We're trying to figure it out right now. Okay, we're
73
00:05:15.959 --> 00:05:18.439
trying to figure it out right now, right now. The
74
00:05:18.519 --> 00:05:20.360
best thing for everybody is you step out of the
75
00:05:20.399 --> 00:05:23.079
truck with your hands open so we can see. Everybody
76
00:05:23.160 --> 00:05:25.800
can realize. Okay, now I want you to open the
77
00:05:25.959 --> 00:05:28.800
door very slowly, come out with your hands straight up,
78
00:05:28.839 --> 00:05:32.800
and come talk to me. Okay, no, God, Eddie, I'm
79
00:05:32.800 --> 00:05:33.600
gonna want to hurt you.
80
00:05:33.759 --> 00:05:34.000
Eddie.
81
00:05:34.720 --> 00:05:36.319
Okay, we all grew up together here.
82
00:05:37.120 --> 00:05:37.920
Listen to me, Boddy.
83
00:05:38.319 --> 00:05:40.839
Okay, this is gonna be bad for everybody if you
84
00:05:40.879 --> 00:05:43.480
don't do as I ask you trust me, because I don't.
85
00:05:43.680 --> 00:05:45.839
Your parents are gonna do what you've hurt if we
86
00:05:45.879 --> 00:05:47.639
don't get this thing resolved peacefully.
87
00:05:47.720 --> 00:05:47.959
Okay.
88
00:05:48.639 --> 00:05:52.639
Detective Chivra continues pleading with Eddie, but his paranoid behavior
89
00:05:52.680 --> 00:05:55.240
seemingly has the other officers on high alert.
90
00:05:55.720 --> 00:05:57.600
So many keys out here as a gesture that you're
91
00:05:57.639 --> 00:05:59.160
not going to run off by try to get them
92
00:05:59.199 --> 00:06:01.079
down here, make us I get down here.
93
00:06:01.160 --> 00:06:05.879
Okay, we'll get ready to block him. Hear me, No
94
00:06:07.600 --> 00:06:10.839
block he goes take off. Okay, let me ask you this.
95
00:06:11.240 --> 00:06:12.560
Who might get a call around here.
96
00:06:12.480 --> 00:06:14.519
And block it? No, don't block it yet. Just get
97
00:06:14.600 --> 00:06:22.399
ready to block okay together, Okay, you have no reason
98
00:06:22.480 --> 00:06:26.160
not to trust me here, Okay anymore? What are you
99
00:06:26.199 --> 00:06:28.439
talking about the world anymore?
100
00:06:28.720 --> 00:06:28.800
Uh?
101
00:06:28.879 --> 00:06:29.040
Huh?
102
00:06:29.199 --> 00:06:29.800
What happened?
103
00:06:31.319 --> 00:06:34.480
We have a chance to realize what was happening now.
104
00:06:34.480 --> 00:06:37.120
I don't even know if I can trust doctors. I
105
00:06:37.160 --> 00:06:37.439
don't know.
106
00:06:38.920 --> 00:06:41.279
Well the people talking about this today.
107
00:06:42.480 --> 00:06:43.680
It was weird talking to him.
108
00:06:43.680 --> 00:06:45.959
I trying to talk to uncle later this afternoon, it
109
00:06:46.079 --> 00:06:46.839
was weird talking to you.
110
00:06:46.879 --> 00:06:52.240
After fleeing the crime scene, Eddie made multiple stops, details
111
00:06:52.279 --> 00:06:55.959
of which remain unknown for now. During the standoff, his
112
00:06:56.079 --> 00:06:59.560
seemingly unstable state of mind becomes increasingly evident.
113
00:07:00.040 --> 00:07:00.920
It's just about like.
114
00:07:01.240 --> 00:07:02.680
Hell walking on earth right now.
115
00:07:03.800 --> 00:07:06.079
I'm not sure what you mean by that, but Hel's
116
00:07:06.120 --> 00:07:08.439
walking on earth with us right now. Tell when you
117
00:07:08.639 --> 00:07:10.480
walk over to the house and fault team, he'll get
118
00:07:10.519 --> 00:07:10.720
out in.
119
00:07:10.759 --> 00:07:11.319
His hands up.
120
00:07:12.199 --> 00:07:13.720
Well, what I'm trying to tell you is that I'll
121
00:07:13.720 --> 00:07:15.720
walk over here to your house in your front yard,
122
00:07:16.439 --> 00:07:18.199
and my hands will be open and your hands will
123
00:07:18.240 --> 00:07:20.560
be open, and we can talk about this, and we
124
00:07:20.639 --> 00:07:23.680
can call your mom and dad on my phone and
125
00:07:23.800 --> 00:07:25.639
you can tell them that you need to see them.
126
00:07:33.040 --> 00:07:36.000
Well, it appears Detective Cheval remains hopeful he can reason
127
00:07:36.079 --> 00:07:39.199
with Eddie. Other officers consider a riskier approach.
128
00:07:39.759 --> 00:07:44.480
Yes, and I guarantee you that you roll the winds down,
129
00:07:46.160 --> 00:07:47.120
and I'll hold a lot only.
130
00:07:49.160 --> 00:07:51.680
Yes, your but if I get your parents' phone, and
131
00:07:51.959 --> 00:07:55.120
when we come back three hours, will you come with
132
00:07:55.319 --> 00:07:57.759
me wait with you till they get there.
133
00:07:58.199 --> 00:08:00.839
The two victims, who were close friends It's were identified
134
00:08:00.839 --> 00:08:03.959
as thirty five year old Chad Littlefield and thirty eight
135
00:08:04.079 --> 00:08:07.399
year old Chris Kyle, author of the best selling memoir
136
00:08:07.560 --> 00:08:12.160
American Sniper. Chris had recently gained national attention due to
137
00:08:12.199 --> 00:08:16.160
the upcoming film adaptation of his book. Eddie's horrifying reasons
138
00:08:16.199 --> 00:08:19.040
for turning on them remain to be seen. For now,
139
00:08:19.160 --> 00:08:22.600
the focus shifts to de escalating the baffling situation. Officers
140
00:08:22.639 --> 00:08:25.720
have found themselves in with Eddie, though their presence only
141
00:08:25.800 --> 00:08:27.680
seems to heighten Eddie's paranoia.
142
00:08:28.279 --> 00:08:30.279
I've been watching it on the news for a week
143
00:08:30.519 --> 00:08:31.839
or you know, two three days?
144
00:08:31.879 --> 00:08:34.360
No justice, anarchy's killed the world.
145
00:08:36.399 --> 00:08:39.639
I'm going to call your parents, okay, but if they're
146
00:08:39.639 --> 00:08:41.039
gonna agree to calm down.
147
00:08:41.200 --> 00:08:46.919
Are you listening to me? I don't know what's going
148
00:08:46.919 --> 00:08:52.679
on on. Give me a second. Okay, Okay, here, okay,
149
00:08:52.759 --> 00:08:55.639
but here, hear me out. Okay. We need to see
150
00:08:55.679 --> 00:08:58.919
your hands. Okay, we need to see that you are
151
00:08:59.039 --> 00:09:00.639
at peace and we and relax.
152
00:09:01.159 --> 00:09:02.960
What could help we We can turn the light off
153
00:09:03.080 --> 00:09:05.440
if you'll do this, if you've dropped that window over
154
00:09:05.559 --> 00:09:07.440
and put your hands on a stairing wheel, and then
155
00:09:07.480 --> 00:09:08.960
we can drop the lights so we can kind of
156
00:09:09.080 --> 00:09:09.480
not put.
157
00:09:09.360 --> 00:09:12.279
It in your eyes. Okay, I can't drop the window.
158
00:09:13.720 --> 00:09:15.080
How do you How do we win? Eddie?
159
00:09:18.240 --> 00:09:22.879
No, no, Eddie, Eddie, no, I'm not gonna walk up
160
00:09:22.919 --> 00:09:24.320
there and yank you out of the truck and knows
161
00:09:24.320 --> 00:09:26.159
any but no, not as anybody else either.
162
00:09:26.200 --> 00:09:33.679
Okay, Eddie, don't do that. Let me call your parents. Okay,
163
00:09:34.039 --> 00:09:37.159
you think you didn't think win his head? It's pretty dazy.
164
00:09:39.960 --> 00:09:41.240
I'm gonna call Okay.
165
00:09:41.919 --> 00:09:44.279
With the possibility that his parents may be able to
166
00:09:44.320 --> 00:09:47.919
calm him down. Detective Chevra gets Eddie's mother Jody on
167
00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:48.440
the phone.
168
00:09:49.320 --> 00:09:51.639
Eddie, I'm gonna tell her what we talked about. Okay,
169
00:09:52.799 --> 00:09:58.759
hey Jody, Okay, Eddie doesn't know what's going on. We
170
00:09:58.879 --> 00:10:00.720
don't know exactly what's going on going on either, But
171
00:10:00.799 --> 00:10:02.840
here's what we're trying to do. We're trying to get
172
00:10:02.960 --> 00:10:05.679
Eddie to come out of the truck and come with us.
173
00:10:05.759 --> 00:10:06.399
But here's the deal.
174
00:10:06.519 --> 00:10:08.679
Eddie said he will come out of the truck if
175
00:10:08.720 --> 00:10:14.960
you guarantee you'll come back to night. I'm trying to
176
00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:16.240
talk to him in the comings with me.
177
00:10:16.519 --> 00:10:18.559
Be safe, security you get here, so you don't have to.
178
00:10:18.600 --> 00:10:21.600
Rush and be worried about him. Something happening because you
179
00:10:21.679 --> 00:10:23.799
can't tell what's going on here with the phone.
180
00:10:26.480 --> 00:10:32.080
Will come Mom.
181
00:10:33.960 --> 00:10:35.159
Do you want to talk to Eddy?
182
00:10:36.799 --> 00:10:37.000
Yeah?
183
00:10:37.639 --> 00:10:37.960
I want.
184
00:10:38.480 --> 00:10:42.240
I don't know, Eddie, have ever given you reason not
185
00:10:42.360 --> 00:10:44.519
to trust me in anything when.
186
00:10:48.679 --> 00:10:49.519
I don't know what to do.
187
00:10:51.240 --> 00:10:56.840
Whatever the situation. I'm not going to guide you wrong. Okay,
188
00:10:57.120 --> 00:10:58.320
I'm not going to do that, Eddie.
189
00:10:59.159 --> 00:11:00.639
Only thing we can do at this point is go
190
00:11:00.799 --> 00:11:03.080
forward and go up with the situation up in a
191
00:11:03.120 --> 00:11:04.399
way that it's going to be best for you.
192
00:11:04.559 --> 00:11:06.440
It's for your parents moving me.
193
00:11:10.039 --> 00:11:10.240
Yeah.
194
00:11:11.639 --> 00:11:15.440
Despite the combined efforts of Jody and Detective Chevra, Eddie
195
00:11:15.559 --> 00:11:18.960
still refuses to leave the truck. He's clearly on edge,
196
00:11:19.039 --> 00:11:21.480
and it won't be long before his paranoia we'll reach
197
00:11:21.559 --> 00:11:22.399
a breaking point.
198
00:11:23.000 --> 00:11:24.080
If y'all have any guns?
199
00:11:25.159 --> 00:11:27.360
Do we have guns? Well, if we have to, what's
200
00:11:27.399 --> 00:11:27.799
our job?
201
00:11:28.519 --> 00:11:29.000
I do too?
202
00:11:30.279 --> 00:11:33.240
Okay, well that's a good possibility, you do, But we
203
00:11:33.320 --> 00:11:35.039
don't want to show our guns. You don't want to
204
00:11:35.039 --> 00:11:35.519
show yours.
205
00:11:35.600 --> 00:11:36.279
We don't need that.
206
00:11:36.720 --> 00:11:38.399
No, we don't. There you go. Can we agree on
207
00:11:38.480 --> 00:11:39.080
the same thing.
208
00:11:40.240 --> 00:11:42.480
Well, if that's not a problem, then I'm gonna trak
209
00:11:42.519 --> 00:11:43.679
this truck and move forward.
210
00:11:44.240 --> 00:11:46.320
Eddie. Eddie, don't do that, Eddie.
211
00:11:46.919 --> 00:11:48.080
Don't keep sitting here.
212
00:11:47.960 --> 00:11:49.399
Watching these cats Berry Vine.
213
00:11:49.519 --> 00:11:51.799
They're moving all around me that I don't.
214
00:11:51.600 --> 00:11:52.240
Even know about.
215
00:11:53.039 --> 00:11:55.919
Eddie, don't frank that truck up, because I know you
216
00:11:56.080 --> 00:11:58.039
probably want to go to your house, but I'm worried
217
00:11:58.080 --> 00:11:59.559
that before you get to your house, you will make
218
00:11:59.600 --> 00:12:00.600
a decision and keep going.
219
00:12:00.799 --> 00:12:02.240
And we don't want to do that, Eddie.
220
00:12:02.639 --> 00:12:05.600
A sudden movement by Eddie sets the surrounding officers on
221
00:12:05.759 --> 00:12:06.759
high alert.
222
00:12:08.399 --> 00:12:08.440
Ed.
223
00:12:09.080 --> 00:12:14.440
Eddie, what's that you got a phone? Tell you a
224
00:12:14.519 --> 00:12:15.120
walk to the house.
225
00:12:15.159 --> 00:12:15.360
Wig.
226
00:12:20.200 --> 00:12:22.240
He's on the phone with somebody. He's on the phone.
227
00:12:22.759 --> 00:12:23.799
Looks like he answered.
228
00:12:29.960 --> 00:12:33.480
Right, the right.
229
00:12:35.240 --> 00:12:36.840
He reached up and lost it has a phone.
230
00:12:38.879 --> 00:12:41.639
Though the officers were unaware at the time, the cell
231
00:12:41.720 --> 00:12:44.559
phone Eddie answer did not belong to him. On the
232
00:12:44.639 --> 00:12:46.759
other end of the line was a man named Chet,
233
00:12:47.080 --> 00:12:50.720
attempting to reach one of the victims, Chad Littlefield. In
234
00:12:50.799 --> 00:12:53.799
a later interview, Chet explains the chilling encounter.
235
00:12:57.480 --> 00:12:59.840
Uh, you know, immediately he picked up the phone and
236
00:13:00.279 --> 00:13:03.080
fat mean first thing, and he knows my name and
237
00:13:03.120 --> 00:13:05.919
I don't know if that's why or he picked up
238
00:13:05.919 --> 00:13:08.120
the phone and I said, Chad, this is Chet. What
239
00:13:08.360 --> 00:13:10.120
is going on? Is everything okay?
240
00:13:11.480 --> 00:13:12.360
And uh.
241
00:13:14.039 --> 00:13:17.519
He answered back, what do you mean? What's going on?
242
00:13:17.960 --> 00:13:20.799
And I said, I noticed the voice was a Chad
243
00:13:20.879 --> 00:13:24.240
And I said this is not Chad. I said who
244
00:13:24.360 --> 00:13:26.399
is this? He said, this is Eddie and that's it,
245
00:13:27.120 --> 00:13:32.480
you know. I said, I'm sorry, Eddie also number, and Eddie.
246
00:13:32.399 --> 00:13:35.639
Hung up and tell me how you how it is that?
247
00:13:35.720 --> 00:13:38.080
You know Eddie his sister used.
248
00:13:37.960 --> 00:13:40.879
To baby sit my kids. I know his mom and
249
00:13:40.960 --> 00:13:44.480
his dad. His mother teaches at my kids school. And
250
00:13:44.600 --> 00:13:46.759
if I was only knowing that was Eddie Round on
251
00:13:46.879 --> 00:13:48.279
the end of the phone that I talked to.
252
00:13:49.000 --> 00:13:52.240
Well, Chet's connection to Eddie is clear. The relationship between
253
00:13:52.360 --> 00:13:55.519
Eddie and the victims, Chad and Chris remains a mystery.
254
00:13:56.039 --> 00:13:58.639
How they ended up together this faithful night and what
255
00:13:58.840 --> 00:14:03.240
transpired between them will soon come to light. In the meantime,
256
00:14:03.399 --> 00:14:05.559
Eddie has been in the truck for nearly thirty minutes
257
00:14:05.919 --> 00:14:09.799
and the tense situation is moments away from exploding into chaos.
258
00:14:10.759 --> 00:14:12.759
Have you thought of anything that would maybe work this
259
00:14:12.879 --> 00:14:15.200
thing out to where we could kind of me and
260
00:14:15.279 --> 00:14:17.519
you go together and then wait for your mom and
261
00:14:17.879 --> 00:14:19.679
mom and dad. Excuse me, I got some gas here.
262
00:14:21.799 --> 00:14:27.200
Have you thought of anything till somebody blocked that? Carl's
263
00:14:30.600 --> 00:14:32.519
Kenny can just make sure that he don't don't don't
264
00:14:32.559 --> 00:14:34.159
mean say ready, I'm not trying to treat you like
265
00:14:34.240 --> 00:14:34.519
a kid.
266
00:14:35.200 --> 00:14:36.679
We want to relax if we don't want.
267
00:14:36.519 --> 00:14:39.759
To misinterpret something that yes, it begins up the way
268
00:14:39.799 --> 00:14:41.360
you've been doing and just so weak and so we
269
00:14:41.440 --> 00:14:43.159
can see and we can all relax a little bit. Okay,
270
00:14:46.840 --> 00:14:49.279
well now, because then we can't we can't hear you
271
00:14:49.279 --> 00:14:51.039
if you try to call me because it's so loud.
272
00:14:51.120 --> 00:15:00.879
This deesel so loud, Eddie. Five minutes Eddie, Okay.
273
00:15:02.480 --> 00:15:05.799
Without warning, Eddie steps on the gas and flees the scene.
274
00:15:19.440 --> 00:15:22.159
Ten minutes later, the vehicle's tires are damaged from the
275
00:15:22.240 --> 00:15:25.919
stopsticks that the officers have placed. The vehicles come to
276
00:15:26.039 --> 00:15:28.000
a complete stop immediately after.
277
00:15:55.039 --> 00:15:55.080
That.
278
00:16:09.559 --> 00:16:14.559
Probably in the world, it's gonna be all right, idio, Okay,
279
00:16:15.480 --> 00:16:16.279
don't understand.
280
00:16:16.759 --> 00:16:18.399
I know we don't either, but we're going to work
281
00:16:18.440 --> 00:16:20.480
this thing out. Okay, let's come on.
282
00:16:23.919 --> 00:16:26.120
Starting understand.
283
00:16:32.360 --> 00:16:35.480
As Eddie has checked for injuries by paramedics, an officer
284
00:16:35.559 --> 00:16:37.279
opposes an important question.
285
00:16:41.200 --> 00:16:42.279
Headie, what is you wrong?
286
00:16:43.200 --> 00:16:44.559
What's a panic?
287
00:16:44.799 --> 00:16:48.039
Back that.
288
00:16:53.200 --> 00:16:54.759
I can't even breathe out?
289
00:16:55.440 --> 00:16:59.159
I was raising, you know, but.
290
00:16:59.320 --> 00:17:01.879
That he secured custody. He's brought to the station for
291
00:17:01.960 --> 00:17:05.119
an interview. While he awaits questioning that, he begins to
292
00:17:05.160 --> 00:17:08.839
speak to an officer sitting off camera, his bizarre comments,
293
00:17:08.920 --> 00:17:12.839
hinting that the following interrogation will be anything but ordinary.
294
00:17:22.839 --> 00:17:24.680
Everybody know, would be the right thing to do this
295
00:17:25.039 --> 00:17:25.720
or you know what I mean?
296
00:17:27.440 --> 00:17:30.400
What's said? The right thing in the wrong things to
297
00:17:30.480 --> 00:17:31.079
do in the world.
298
00:17:31.720 --> 00:17:35.480
Yeah, there is certain things.
299
00:17:35.519 --> 00:17:36.400
You got to start the.
300
00:17:39.000 --> 00:17:40.400
How is so among dad?
301
00:17:40.480 --> 00:17:41.200
Aren't too late?
302
00:17:41.359 --> 00:17:41.519
You know?
303
00:17:42.759 --> 00:17:45.920
Awesome, disa, they won't be.
304
00:17:47.759 --> 00:17:49.119
One? Why is this world?
305
00:17:50.400 --> 00:17:57.240
Why any Why didn't we see it coming before and
306
00:17:57.440 --> 00:17:58.440
before and before?
307
00:17:58.640 --> 00:17:59.279
Polarized?
308
00:18:00.079 --> 00:18:02.960
Okay, but you know what you ask me questions that
309
00:18:03.160 --> 00:18:07.319
all live has many men time in a world?
310
00:18:07.359 --> 00:18:12.920
Step keep cool a Ranger Briley soon enters, appearing ready
311
00:18:13.000 --> 00:18:16.000
to get to the bottom of today's tragedy and talk
312
00:18:16.079 --> 00:18:16.799
with a little bit to.
313
00:18:16.880 --> 00:18:20.759
Say, how you got rough time?
314
00:18:21.119 --> 00:18:22.880
I haven't been having a pretty rough time of it
315
00:18:23.240 --> 00:18:28.519
right now. I just want to sit in here and
316
00:18:29.160 --> 00:18:31.920
visit with you and talk to you. I didn't see
317
00:18:31.960 --> 00:18:33.480
what when I can do?
318
00:18:34.119 --> 00:18:35.640
Is there anywhere you can be taken off?
319
00:18:37.039 --> 00:18:40.759
I have to talk to these guys about about doing that.
320
00:18:43.039 --> 00:18:44.039
Still trying to find out.
321
00:18:43.920 --> 00:18:44.640
All that stuff, but.
322
00:18:47.359 --> 00:18:47.680
Me too.
323
00:18:48.200 --> 00:18:50.240
Let mean, he's trying to.
324
00:18:50.279 --> 00:18:53.720
Find out more about the world that I've been living in.
325
00:18:53.960 --> 00:18:57.599
To Ranger Bridley next reads that he his Miranda rides,
326
00:18:57.880 --> 00:19:00.640
but his response is only the beginning of the unsettling
327
00:19:00.720 --> 00:19:02.279
answers that soon follow.
328
00:19:02.880 --> 00:19:04.160
You understand those rights.
329
00:19:05.160 --> 00:19:09.160
Uh I uh, I go around and talk to people a.
330
00:19:09.200 --> 00:19:14.720
Lot, and I never knew that counseling was more you know,
331
00:19:16.720 --> 00:19:19.559
counseling between men and women needed to be more heavy
332
00:19:19.599 --> 00:19:23.079
in the world than it did. But when you're surrounded
333
00:19:23.160 --> 00:19:26.079
on all front, where you begin, you can't you can't
334
00:19:26.160 --> 00:19:30.920
just start in one place, you know, right, you understand.
335
00:19:30.599 --> 00:19:32.200
Those rights, You're okay with talking.
336
00:19:32.039 --> 00:19:35.240
When you were at well, just find I didn't live
337
00:19:35.279 --> 00:19:37.839
with somebody with their hand in my ass my whole life. Yeah,
338
00:19:39.799 --> 00:19:45.160
you know, yeah, I'm not okay with that.
339
00:19:45.319 --> 00:19:46.839
That's not that's not right.
340
00:19:46.960 --> 00:19:47.880
Somebody doing that to you.
341
00:19:50.400 --> 00:19:52.759
So sad how it had to happen and stuff, you know,
342
00:19:52.839 --> 00:19:55.000
and how it how it did happen.
343
00:19:58.240 --> 00:20:04.920
Yeah, yeah, I'd wish you would stop. You know, if
344
00:20:04.960 --> 00:20:07.240
there are world councilors that can speak about this.
345
00:20:07.440 --> 00:20:14.400
That uh there there has to be. There has to
346
00:20:14.480 --> 00:20:15.119
be to.
347
00:20:15.240 --> 00:20:16.279
Keep people accountable.
348
00:20:16.720 --> 00:20:20.039
Yeah, you know, evidently you.
349
00:20:20.119 --> 00:20:26.480
Know for stuff like this that people didn't that you
350
00:20:26.599 --> 00:20:28.920
can't walk on your grounding ground with because they never
351
00:20:29.000 --> 00:20:30.640
walked on the same ground with you, you know what
352
00:20:30.680 --> 00:20:30.960
I mean?
353
00:20:32.279 --> 00:20:32.519
With that?
354
00:20:32.680 --> 00:20:35.839
He making a little sense. Ranger Briley appears to formulate
355
00:20:35.880 --> 00:20:38.960
an idea for what could possibly explain his odd behavior.
356
00:20:39.720 --> 00:20:42.519
Was there a time today you use any drugs.
357
00:20:43.839 --> 00:20:43.960
Uh.
358
00:20:44.200 --> 00:20:46.119
Yeah, I did use some tobacco today.
359
00:20:46.759 --> 00:20:48.519
Yeah, I was kind of looking at your eyes were
360
00:20:48.680 --> 00:20:50.119
a little bit constricted.
361
00:20:51.880 --> 00:20:55.359
Maybe maybe you might have you submitted to beat means
362
00:20:55.440 --> 00:20:56.240
or something today.
363
00:20:56.960 --> 00:20:57.400
I had not.
364
00:20:57.799 --> 00:20:59.079
Oh you had not. I did not.
365
00:21:01.200 --> 00:21:01.240
Have.
366
00:21:01.400 --> 00:21:03.119
You said why I've been having such a hard time
367
00:21:03.160 --> 00:21:06.319
to sleep because I haven't been taking drugs and I can't.
368
00:21:06.119 --> 00:21:06.720
Sleep in night.
369
00:21:07.920 --> 00:21:11.440
The Eddy claims that he hasn't consumed substances aside from tobacco.
370
00:21:11.759 --> 00:21:14.559
The question was likely posed due to what was uncovered
371
00:21:14.640 --> 00:21:17.799
during a search of his residence. Among the items found
372
00:21:17.839 --> 00:21:21.240
in his home were a blue jean jacket with possible bloodstains,
373
00:21:21.640 --> 00:21:25.440
firearm ammunition, and a small box containing paraphernalia.
374
00:21:26.000 --> 00:21:28.720
Was there a bomb, like a drug bomb in some
375
00:21:28.920 --> 00:21:30.359
of your stuff?
376
00:21:32.839 --> 00:21:33.000
Uh?
377
00:21:33.880 --> 00:21:34.359
Tobacco?
378
00:21:35.880 --> 00:21:40.240
Is that what was in the bomb? Is that true
379
00:21:40.359 --> 00:21:40.519
or not?
380
00:21:41.640 --> 00:21:42.039
I don't know.
381
00:21:43.680 --> 00:21:45.000
You know, you have to be truthful with me.
382
00:21:45.039 --> 00:21:47.400
If it wasn't, just be truthful.
383
00:21:48.680 --> 00:21:52.480
What was in that bomb? There's probably some pot in
384
00:21:52.559 --> 00:21:55.799
there too, you know a little bit of pot all right?
385
00:21:55.920 --> 00:21:57.720
Anybody else? Uh?
386
00:22:00.960 --> 00:22:05.519
You know, I can't trust anything and in Texas with
387
00:22:05.880 --> 00:22:08.519
with weed in it, because it's usually lace. Uh, you know,
388
00:22:08.759 --> 00:22:12.359
lay stuff so type with different drugs. Had you use
389
00:22:12.440 --> 00:22:12.880
it today?
390
00:22:13.680 --> 00:22:17.480
Yeah? And you're being tritful with me, Yes, sir, I
391
00:22:17.559 --> 00:22:21.079
smoked a little bit today. I've got so many abandoned
392
00:22:21.160 --> 00:22:23.920
men issues and trust issues here that I don't know
393
00:22:24.039 --> 00:22:25.519
what what do TheInk?
394
00:22:25.559 --> 00:22:29.079
You know, I've been having these problems in my town
395
00:22:29.400 --> 00:22:32.799
since I have grown up, you know, since the boy.
396
00:22:34.200 --> 00:22:37.279
I'm trying to fix it. That's wrong in our country
397
00:22:37.359 --> 00:22:37.640
right now.
398
00:22:38.960 --> 00:22:42.519
Evidently the Communisn't Party wants to run rampant in America.
399
00:22:43.359 --> 00:22:45.480
The commun Disn't times are here upon us. You know,
400
00:22:46.119 --> 00:22:48.319
the Reds are the Reds are already eating up all
401
00:22:48.319 --> 00:22:48.839
the Indians.
402
00:22:49.519 --> 00:22:54.759
When of the it's tragedy. It's the ones that can't.
403
00:22:54.559 --> 00:22:55.880
Eat Indians that want them.
404
00:22:56.279 --> 00:23:00.519
You know, they're gonna have to have problem about.
405
00:23:02.119 --> 00:23:04.319
And he would later admit that he thought his neighbors
406
00:23:04.440 --> 00:23:08.720
were bloodthirsty savages and cannibals and believe that his experiment
407
00:23:08.799 --> 00:23:11.440
would travel to his neighbor's home through the sewers, where
408
00:23:11.480 --> 00:23:14.920
his neighbor would eat it. As Ranger Briley continues to
409
00:23:15.039 --> 00:23:19.039
navigate Eddie's confusing rhetoric, the focus of the conversation shifts
410
00:23:19.079 --> 00:23:21.359
to the crime that brought them here in the first place.
411
00:23:21.920 --> 00:23:25.400
I want to talk about what happened, and you can
412
00:23:25.480 --> 00:23:26.920
start with when you woke up today.
413
00:23:27.799 --> 00:23:30.519
Well, you know, I keep talking to Chris.
414
00:23:31.039 --> 00:23:33.839
You know, they keep talking to Chris is in my world,
415
00:23:33.920 --> 00:23:37.799
And like every time I talk to another man named Chris,
416
00:23:37.920 --> 00:23:40.160
that just gets into another man named Chris.
417
00:23:40.240 --> 00:23:43.160
I think about talking to the wolf, you know, to
418
00:23:43.319 --> 00:23:44.720
the one in this guy.
419
00:23:46.400 --> 00:23:48.119
The ones in the sky are the ones that.
420
00:23:48.319 --> 00:23:51.200
Lie, you know what I mean? The pigs in the world,
421
00:23:51.359 --> 00:23:56.319
they can truly say their pigs. I've been smelling it
422
00:23:56.440 --> 00:23:59.359
this whole time. You know, I'm just starting to everybody.
423
00:24:00.720 --> 00:24:04.119
I can smell big, you know, I can tell the
424
00:24:04.319 --> 00:24:08.000
difference between two different kinds of pigs. I don't know
425
00:24:08.160 --> 00:24:12.599
much how you can smell your ear m. Well, I'm
426
00:24:12.640 --> 00:24:16.480
not trying to say nobody singing but sinking.
427
00:24:16.759 --> 00:24:17.359
You know what I mean?
428
00:24:19.400 --> 00:24:21.599
And what exactly happened today after.
429
00:24:21.480 --> 00:24:26.880
You woke up, I'm I'm finally getting best peace of
430
00:24:27.000 --> 00:24:30.640
my mind, you know, yeah, pieces of mind back that
431
00:24:30.720 --> 00:24:31.720
I won't ever get back.
432
00:24:32.960 --> 00:24:33.920
Where are you from, Idie?
433
00:24:36.039 --> 00:24:38.640
I mean I don't know you understand that I don't
434
00:24:38.640 --> 00:24:39.319
know where you're from.
435
00:24:39.799 --> 00:24:42.960
More than rather you're in that's land Lancaster that we're
436
00:24:43.000 --> 00:24:45.759
standing in the day, Lancaster, Texas.
437
00:24:46.759 --> 00:24:49.920
In an interview with Eddie's parents, his mother Jody, begins
438
00:24:49.960 --> 00:24:52.720
to elaborate on her son's history as a United States
439
00:24:52.799 --> 00:24:56.440
Marine and the experiences that would later entwine tragically with
440
00:24:56.599 --> 00:24:58.119
the fate of the two victims.
441
00:24:58.640 --> 00:25:01.920
I believe after nine to eleven happened, he really wanted
442
00:25:02.000 --> 00:25:05.279
to serve his country. I say I believe because he
443
00:25:05.359 --> 00:25:08.559
never told me that straightforth. And after it happened, he
444
00:25:08.720 --> 00:25:12.400
really became more patriotic and cared more about his country,
445
00:25:12.559 --> 00:25:16.440
and he wanted to serve. And he looked at the
446
00:25:16.599 --> 00:25:18.640
Army and looked at the Marine Corps and decided he
447
00:25:18.759 --> 00:25:21.400
wanted to be a marine. He was out of high
448
00:25:21.400 --> 00:25:24.079
school for I think it was only ten days he
449
00:25:24.200 --> 00:25:26.200
graduated in ten days later he was on a plane
450
00:25:26.279 --> 00:25:26.799
boot camp.
451
00:25:27.680 --> 00:25:30.559
What did you do in the Brenklin I worked at
452
00:25:30.599 --> 00:25:34.640
the prison guard and I worked on the gun. So
453
00:25:36.680 --> 00:25:37.839
plucked dita, you know.
454
00:25:38.400 --> 00:25:40.839
At His work as an armorer and prison guard was
455
00:25:40.920 --> 00:25:44.480
served overseas in Iraq, where his father, Raymond explains, he
456
00:25:44.559 --> 00:25:46.240
went on several combat missions.
457
00:25:46.839 --> 00:25:48.960
He really didn't really want to talk about it when
458
00:25:49.000 --> 00:25:52.160
he got back. He liked most of them do. The
459
00:25:52.240 --> 00:25:54.519
only time I could get anything out of him when
460
00:25:54.559 --> 00:25:58.799
he was drinking, and then I could get some stuff
461
00:25:58.880 --> 00:25:59.400
out of him.
462
00:25:59.480 --> 00:26:02.799
But it was very much who's right and who's wrong.
463
00:26:02.920 --> 00:26:06.319
You know, nobody wants to admit that the right. Nobody
464
00:26:06.400 --> 00:26:09.200
wants to admit that the wrong. I'm the only man
465
00:26:09.279 --> 00:26:12.839
that could change it. Yeah, that one either behind.
466
00:26:12.599 --> 00:26:13.839
My back right now.
467
00:26:14.160 --> 00:26:14.400
Yeah.
468
00:26:15.279 --> 00:26:17.640
It was when Eddie returned from a volunteer mission in
469
00:26:17.680 --> 00:26:20.799
Haiti after the earthquake of twenty ten that they began
470
00:26:20.960 --> 00:26:23.480
noticing significant changes in his mental state.
471
00:26:24.039 --> 00:26:26.599
He was there for I want to say, almost six months.
472
00:26:26.759 --> 00:26:27.319
Six months.
473
00:26:29.279 --> 00:26:32.960
Do you remember any letters he wrote you telling you
474
00:26:33.039 --> 00:26:34.880
what was going on there? Yeah.
475
00:26:35.039 --> 00:26:37.839
He was telling us he's picking up dead bodies with
476
00:26:37.960 --> 00:26:40.119
the grappling hook and dragging them out of the water
477
00:26:40.240 --> 00:26:41.799
and then throwing them in the front end loader and
478
00:26:41.839 --> 00:26:43.720
then loading them up in the dump truck and putting
479
00:26:43.759 --> 00:26:44.960
them in the grave.
480
00:26:45.960 --> 00:26:49.079
They further explained that when Eddie returned, he began having
481
00:26:49.240 --> 00:26:53.119
nightmares and flashbacks. What truly alarmed them, however, was his
482
00:26:53.240 --> 00:26:55.680
apparent descent into dangerous delusions.
483
00:26:56.200 --> 00:26:56.960
He asked me like to.
484
00:26:56.960 --> 00:27:00.279
Fill up his muscles. I felt of his mess and
485
00:27:00.359 --> 00:27:03.160
he said, they're just they're they're going away. Mom My
486
00:27:03.240 --> 00:27:06.880
muscles are going away. They're disappearing. I said, well, so
487
00:27:07.279 --> 00:27:09.759
you know your muscles, You're fine. Your muscles are fine.
488
00:27:09.880 --> 00:27:12.279
He said, no, I got a tape on them and
489
00:27:12.359 --> 00:27:13.359
it's eating me alive.
490
00:27:14.319 --> 00:27:17.519
Eddie soon began expressing thoughts about taking his own life.
491
00:27:17.960 --> 00:27:22.279
At the VA hospital, he was diagnosed with PTSD, prescribed medication,
492
00:27:22.559 --> 00:27:25.680
and released back into the care of his parents. However,
493
00:27:25.799 --> 00:27:28.720
he would soon return to the hospital as Eddie's rampant
494
00:27:28.759 --> 00:27:32.559
paranoia would only escalate, and the next time it wouldn't
495
00:27:32.599 --> 00:27:36.480
be his own life he would threaten. Meanwhile, Ranger Briley
496
00:27:36.559 --> 00:27:38.680
has yet to uncover how Eddie wound up at the
497
00:27:38.720 --> 00:27:42.880
firing range with Chris and Chad, likely prompting his next question,
498
00:27:43.880 --> 00:27:44.839
how did you meet Chriss?
499
00:27:46.359 --> 00:27:49.440
He was the one that was protecting the schools. My
500
00:27:49.559 --> 00:27:53.359
mom she was a teacher, so school teacher. Now I
501
00:27:53.480 --> 00:27:57.839
finally met the gug smell, you know, smelled void's worth.
502
00:27:57.920 --> 00:28:00.400
I was like, that'sas.
503
00:28:01.920 --> 00:28:02.359
He was a.
504
00:28:04.480 --> 00:28:07.640
He was a child, cayl you know, he was cal
505
00:28:09.000 --> 00:28:09.519
and what's that.
506
00:28:09.640 --> 00:28:10.359
Other guy's name.
507
00:28:11.880 --> 00:28:14.440
I couldn't even remember when.
508
00:28:14.799 --> 00:28:16.559
When was the first time you met the other guy?
509
00:28:18.359 --> 00:28:20.440
First time I ever met ether one of them was yesterday.
510
00:28:20.519 --> 00:28:24.279
I didn't know who they were not, you know, Yeah, okay.
511
00:28:24.839 --> 00:28:27.319
I knew who they were, but I didn't know, you know,
512
00:28:27.599 --> 00:28:31.640
who they were. It's very evident now who they were.
513
00:28:31.920 --> 00:28:34.440
I'm obviously here on top of the top side of
514
00:28:34.519 --> 00:28:36.039
the world, so yeah.
515
00:28:36.559 --> 00:28:36.599
Not.
516
00:28:37.839 --> 00:28:40.599
The revelation that Eddie knew neither of the victims further
517
00:28:40.720 --> 00:28:42.759
deepens the mystery of how they ended up at the
518
00:28:42.839 --> 00:28:47.240
firing range together. The devastating truth would soon be revealed.
519
00:28:47.640 --> 00:28:51.119
For now, Ranger Briley further questions Eddie Will his answers
520
00:28:51.200 --> 00:28:53.279
continue to blur the lines of reality.
521
00:28:54.039 --> 00:28:55.799
How did you meet them? Did you meet them at
522
00:28:55.880 --> 00:28:56.400
your house?
523
00:28:56.559 --> 00:28:58.599
Or did they came and guide me in my house?
524
00:29:00.039 --> 00:29:01.119
And then where do they take you?
525
00:29:02.720 --> 00:29:06.920
You drove down into the country out there, and then they, uh, well,
526
00:29:06.960 --> 00:29:08.200
when did some shooting sports?
527
00:29:08.240 --> 00:29:10.119
You know what kind of shooting sports?
528
00:29:11.839 --> 00:29:17.559
Well, imagine their headhunters, you know, tryna hunt everybody down
529
00:29:18.599 --> 00:29:19.880
they did'em wrong before, you.
530
00:29:19.920 --> 00:29:20.400
Know, I don't.
531
00:29:21.359 --> 00:29:23.680
I'm not trying to hunt down anybody that I did wrong.
532
00:29:24.559 --> 00:29:24.799
Are you.
533
00:29:26.000 --> 00:29:29.200
I'm I'm like, you know, I'm I'm I try to
534
00:29:29.240 --> 00:29:30.839
be as reasonable or normal as I can.
535
00:29:31.160 --> 00:29:33.079
I try to be as normal as reason one as
536
00:29:33.079 --> 00:29:34.960
I can every day. And I think about it every day,
537
00:29:34.960 --> 00:29:40.480
and I'm like, pretty damn reasonable. Yeah, I'm pretty damn fair, fright.
538
00:29:41.279 --> 00:29:42.720
What what happened out there today?
539
00:29:42.799 --> 00:29:45.559
On how the shooting sports?
540
00:29:45.599 --> 00:29:45.640
What?
541
00:29:45.839 --> 00:29:46.559
What kind of guns?
542
00:29:46.799 --> 00:29:48.680
I was a reasonable and fair with them boys. You know,
543
00:29:48.799 --> 00:29:50.759
they'd looked at me in the eyes, and I looked
544
00:29:50.799 --> 00:29:52.000
at them in the eyes and then.
545
00:29:54.519 --> 00:29:58.200
And and what happened to them today is from your perspective.
546
00:29:59.039 --> 00:30:03.000
Well, I can't just keep eating my soul up about this?
547
00:30:03.319 --> 00:30:06.079
You know you're right, And you can't just keep letting
548
00:30:06.079 --> 00:30:08.920
people eat your soul up for free. You know, it's
549
00:30:09.000 --> 00:30:09.759
not what it's about.
550
00:30:09.920 --> 00:30:12.160
It's about having the soul that you have in you
551
00:30:12.319 --> 00:30:15.799
for yourself. And I still got tons of people that
552
00:30:15.880 --> 00:30:18.839
are eating on my soul right now. I can't him,
553
00:30:18.839 --> 00:30:22.519
been able to sleep, could have been waiting for him
554
00:30:22.519 --> 00:30:23.640
to come back and get my soul.
555
00:30:25.039 --> 00:30:28.880
Despite continued outpatient treatment with the VA Hospital at He's
556
00:30:28.960 --> 00:30:33.920
paranoid behavior continued to decline. As his father, Raymond explains.
557
00:30:33.799 --> 00:30:35.880
He was at the lake, and he started talking.
558
00:30:37.880 --> 00:30:40.720
About a demon coming out in him, and then he
559
00:30:40.799 --> 00:30:42.759
started telling me he was a vampire. And then he
560
00:30:42.839 --> 00:30:46.799
told me he was aware of And I looked around
561
00:30:46.839 --> 00:30:49.079
one time and he had my pistol. I had to
562
00:30:49.119 --> 00:30:52.000
go get my pistol away from him. I unloved he
563
00:30:52.079 --> 00:30:52.720
didn't put.
564
00:30:52.599 --> 00:30:53.319
It in the trunk.
565
00:30:54.079 --> 00:30:55.960
Went back out there and he had it again, and
566
00:30:56.039 --> 00:30:57.759
I took it back away from when I took all
567
00:30:57.839 --> 00:30:58.279
my bullets.
568
00:30:58.400 --> 00:30:59.119
Tell it in the lake.
569
00:31:00.160 --> 00:31:03.000
He's saying he wanted to blow his brains at And
570
00:31:03.119 --> 00:31:05.200
I asked him why he was going Dad, I don't know.
571
00:31:05.319 --> 00:31:07.880
He's something in my head telling me I need to go.
572
00:31:08.559 --> 00:31:10.000
And I said, well, son, you can't do it on
573
00:31:10.119 --> 00:31:12.880
my watch, you know. And Dad can't watch his own
574
00:31:13.000 --> 00:31:13.519
sun die.
575
00:31:15.160 --> 00:31:19.079
Eventually, Eddie's mental state reached a dangerous breaking point. Jody
576
00:31:19.160 --> 00:31:23.680
describes one terrifying incident on January seventeenth, just two weeks
577
00:31:23.759 --> 00:31:26.759
before the shootings, in which he held both his girlfriend
578
00:31:26.880 --> 00:31:28.960
and her roommate Jen hostage.
579
00:31:29.599 --> 00:31:31.119
So he was over there with her and.
580
00:31:32.680 --> 00:31:35.240
He just became very paranoid that somebody was trying to
581
00:31:35.279 --> 00:31:40.000
get in and hurt her in her roommate and Jim
582
00:31:40.079 --> 00:31:41.599
kept saying, nobody's trying to get us.
583
00:31:41.759 --> 00:31:42.519
You know, we're fine.
584
00:31:43.119 --> 00:31:44.559
And then he went and got a knife from the
585
00:31:44.680 --> 00:31:47.400
kitchen and was guarding the door. Said he wasn't about
586
00:31:47.400 --> 00:31:50.119
to let anybody hurt her. He'd heart her first before
587
00:31:50.160 --> 00:31:51.359
he let someone else hurt her.
588
00:31:52.400 --> 00:31:56.440
According to the roommate's statement, Eddie made multiple threatening comments
589
00:31:56.480 --> 00:31:59.359
and refused to let either of them leave. She secretly
590
00:31:59.440 --> 00:32:02.720
sent texts to her friend, who contacted the police. They
591
00:32:02.880 --> 00:32:05.359
arrived shortly after arresting Eddie.
592
00:32:05.880 --> 00:32:06.559
It was actually a.
593
00:32:06.599 --> 00:32:09.799
Former Marine police officer that came, and she told him
594
00:32:10.720 --> 00:32:13.799
that she wasn't as fearful for herself as she was
595
00:32:13.920 --> 00:32:14.359
for him.
596
00:32:15.119 --> 00:32:16.759
She was more afraid for his safety.
597
00:32:17.359 --> 00:32:22.160
So he transported him over to Green Oaks Hospital there
598
00:32:22.200 --> 00:32:25.160
in Dallas, and they kept him overnight and the next day,
599
00:32:25.680 --> 00:32:28.319
and on Monday they transferred him over to the VA.
600
00:32:29.759 --> 00:32:33.039
Eddie was discharged from the VA hospital the following Thursday,
601
00:32:33.160 --> 00:32:37.240
January thirty first, just two days before the tragic shootings
602
00:32:37.279 --> 00:32:42.039
took place. As the interview continues, Eddie's confusing explanations continue
603
00:32:42.079 --> 00:32:44.200
to muddy the events at the firing range.
604
00:32:45.279 --> 00:32:48.680
What did these guys safety today when you're with them,
605
00:32:48.720 --> 00:32:49.400
What did they tell you?
606
00:32:50.440 --> 00:32:50.480
That?
607
00:32:50.519 --> 00:32:52.599
Don't really talk to me about much. You know, they're
608
00:32:52.799 --> 00:32:55.200
just talking about a common man.
609
00:32:55.200 --> 00:32:55.359
You know.
610
00:32:56.359 --> 00:32:57.359
Yeah, tell me what they said.
611
00:32:57.440 --> 00:33:00.200
He we can't walk around as a command in a.
612
00:33:00.240 --> 00:33:03.319
World of stakes, you know? Is that what they told you?
613
00:33:04.039 --> 00:33:06.000
If that's what the world has seen me, I want
614
00:33:06.000 --> 00:33:08.640
to see that you are a mistake. I'm not a
615
00:33:08.759 --> 00:33:15.559
mistake already missing, missing out of my life. I want
616
00:33:15.599 --> 00:33:17.880
you to tell me what these men told you today, these.
617
00:33:19.240 --> 00:33:21.079
Is he roes that you were with, Tell me what
618
00:33:21.160 --> 00:33:21.960
they told you today.
619
00:33:23.119 --> 00:33:25.759
Well, you know they're telling me about, you know, stuff
620
00:33:25.839 --> 00:33:28.880
they've done, stuff they they've experienced and stuff. Well I've
621
00:33:28.880 --> 00:33:31.039
already seen that stuff on the other side of the pond,
622
00:33:31.480 --> 00:33:31.799
do you have?
623
00:33:32.440 --> 00:33:34.759
Yeah? When I came back to this one and it's
624
00:33:35.119 --> 00:33:38.519
it's happening more and more rapid, even more here in
625
00:33:38.640 --> 00:33:41.440
Leinster than anywhere, you know.
626
00:33:45.000 --> 00:33:46.440
And how are they helping you today?
627
00:33:48.079 --> 00:33:52.400
Who's that? Which? Which man? The the the man that
628
00:33:52.599 --> 00:33:55.920
you you killed? How are they helping you today? When
629
00:33:55.960 --> 00:33:58.799
they were talking to you, it's hard to be appreciated
630
00:33:58.920 --> 00:33:59.240
about it.
631
00:33:59.519 --> 00:34:03.920
You know, what did they say.
632
00:34:05.680 --> 00:34:07.759
It? Neither side? It was being nice about it?
633
00:34:07.880 --> 00:34:08.079
You know.
634
00:34:09.559 --> 00:34:13.480
Though Eddie's explanations remain unclear, his mother, Jody, was able
635
00:34:13.559 --> 00:34:16.199
to explain the heartbreaking truth of how he came to
636
00:34:16.320 --> 00:34:18.960
meet Chris and Chad and what they may have been
637
00:34:19.000 --> 00:34:20.760
doing together at the firing range.
638
00:34:21.360 --> 00:34:23.239
It was a day ended up getting hell the hospital.
639
00:34:24.559 --> 00:34:27.239
Chris Giles's children went to the school where I work,
640
00:34:28.000 --> 00:34:29.880
and he would drop them off every morning where I
641
00:34:29.920 --> 00:34:34.679
had duty. And I knew he helped veterans with PTSD.
642
00:34:35.960 --> 00:34:38.239
So I opened the car door when his kids got out,
643
00:34:38.800 --> 00:34:41.000
open the front door, and I said, hey, mister God,
644
00:34:41.920 --> 00:34:44.360
do you still work for you know, the company that
645
00:34:44.519 --> 00:34:47.000
helps veterans with PTSD.
646
00:34:47.079 --> 00:34:48.199
And he said, yes, ma'am, I do.
647
00:34:51.039 --> 00:34:54.039
And so my son's very sick and he really needs
648
00:34:54.079 --> 00:34:55.920
help and we're just not getting the help we needed.
649
00:34:56.000 --> 00:34:59.280
The VA. I explained to him kind of what had been.
650
00:34:59.239 --> 00:35:01.360
Going on with that, a lot of the things I
651
00:35:01.519 --> 00:35:04.639
just told you, and I said, he just needs help so.
652
00:35:04.760 --> 00:35:07.679
Desperately, and I don't know what to do anymore.
653
00:35:09.320 --> 00:35:12.760
He said, missus, Ralph, I'll do everything in my power
654
00:35:12.840 --> 00:35:15.800
to help your son. And I started to cry because
655
00:35:15.800 --> 00:35:20.440
I was happy that somebody, some person that I don't
656
00:35:20.480 --> 00:35:22.880
really even know, it was willing to help my son.
657
00:35:24.199 --> 00:35:26.679
And he said then he goes, I'm going to get
658
00:35:26.679 --> 00:35:30.239
together with Eddie this weekend, and I said, that'll be good,
659
00:35:30.679 --> 00:35:34.199
that'll be really good. And the next day was the
660
00:35:34.320 --> 00:35:38.920
second of February. And I didn't even know really that
661
00:35:40.119 --> 00:35:44.599
mister Carlins come to get Eddie, that they had talked
662
00:35:44.679 --> 00:35:47.840
and set this up to go to go out to
663
00:35:47.920 --> 00:35:48.679
the gun range.
664
00:35:49.920 --> 00:35:52.199
While on the way to the firing range, Chad and
665
00:35:52.320 --> 00:35:55.559
Chris would send text messages to one another. The haunting
666
00:35:55.679 --> 00:35:58.719
details of what they discussed would soon send chills down
667
00:35:58.760 --> 00:36:02.519
the investigator's spy. In the meantime, though the mystery of
668
00:36:02.559 --> 00:36:05.519
how they met Eddie has resolved, the question of why
669
00:36:05.599 --> 00:36:08.000
he shot the two men remains to be seen.
670
00:36:08.960 --> 00:36:13.280
You know what you what you do today is wrong right,
671
00:36:14.360 --> 00:36:19.679
understand that zor what do you think should happen?
672
00:36:21.079 --> 00:36:22.840
Nothing can keep covering it up forever.
673
00:36:24.719 --> 00:36:26.599
That's the reason you played right because you knew it
674
00:36:26.679 --> 00:36:27.039
was wrong.
675
00:36:27.679 --> 00:36:29.719
Well, I knew that there was certain that was wrong
676
00:36:29.800 --> 00:36:30.119
about it.
677
00:36:32.199 --> 00:36:36.320
Some of that started killing. You knew that was wrong, right,
678
00:36:38.199 --> 00:36:44.360
and you knew driving away taking that trouble was wrong.
679
00:36:45.360 --> 00:36:48.000
And where did you drive to after that? Without the
680
00:36:48.159 --> 00:36:49.159
rise or di stayed.
681
00:36:51.039 --> 00:36:55.079
Although Eddie will soon reveal his motives, his cryptic explanations
682
00:36:55.079 --> 00:36:59.000
will leave investigators struggling to make sense of them. For now,
683
00:36:59.079 --> 00:37:02.920
the puzzling detail surrounding the incident finally begin to come together.
684
00:37:03.840 --> 00:37:07.280
How many times did you shoot them today? The help?
685
00:37:07.360 --> 00:37:11.079
A few, a tuble few tepe a few shots so far?
686
00:37:12.440 --> 00:37:16.159
How close were you too? Then? Well, let's ride up.
687
00:37:16.320 --> 00:37:18.800
Let's rude up close to home? I mean to be
688
00:37:18.960 --> 00:37:19.440
so close.
689
00:37:19.519 --> 00:37:23.920
But did they know you were going to shoot? They
690
00:37:23.960 --> 00:37:27.480
didn't know. Why do you think that?
691
00:37:28.880 --> 00:37:33.280
Because they're training wasn't as good. My training has been better,
692
00:37:33.599 --> 00:37:35.280
you know, my life.
693
00:37:36.880 --> 00:37:39.679
While they may not have known Eddie's intentions, they were
694
00:37:39.800 --> 00:37:43.239
wary of his behavior. At two thirty pm, Chris sent
695
00:37:43.320 --> 00:37:46.679
a text to Chad saying, this dude is straight up nuts.
696
00:37:47.239 --> 00:37:51.280
Chad responded, sitting behind me, watch my six which is
697
00:37:51.360 --> 00:37:56.280
military slaying for watch my back. Soon after Eddie opened fire,
698
00:37:56.840 --> 00:37:59.880
Chris and Chad were each shot six times a close range,
699
00:38:00.239 --> 00:38:03.239
with some shots being fired after they'd fallen to the ground.
700
00:38:04.159 --> 00:38:08.360
Eddie then fled the scene, making several stops. Afterward, Eddie
701
00:38:08.440 --> 00:38:10.880
first went to his uncle james house, where he showed
702
00:38:10.960 --> 00:38:13.719
him the firearm used to shoot the men, with claims
703
00:38:13.760 --> 00:38:17.079
he was driving a dead man's truck. Next, he stopped
704
00:38:17.079 --> 00:38:20.360
at his sister's house, where he confessed to the horrific crimes.
705
00:38:20.920 --> 00:38:22.920
He then went to his house to pick up his dog.
706
00:38:23.559 --> 00:38:26.519
From there, he visited a taco bell restaurant before finally
707
00:38:26.599 --> 00:38:30.159
returning to his house where the standoff began. In a
708
00:38:30.280 --> 00:38:34.400
haunting confession, Eddie finally shares his twisted reasons for pulling
709
00:38:34.519 --> 00:38:35.000
the trigger.
710
00:38:36.599 --> 00:38:41.880
First, the one that I could identif with better clearly.
711
00:38:43.880 --> 00:38:47.000
The one that I could clearly identif was I knew
712
00:38:47.159 --> 00:38:49.639
if I did not take out of his sault, he
713
00:38:49.800 --> 00:38:53.719
was coming to take one next or something something, one
714
00:38:53.760 --> 00:38:57.360
of his gangsters was going to take one of Monsel's next,
715
00:38:57.440 --> 00:38:58.840
one of his kids gangsters.
716
00:39:00.920 --> 00:39:03.119
As the interview ends, it appears as though a few
717
00:39:03.239 --> 00:39:05.920
questions still linger on Ranger Briley's mind.
718
00:39:07.239 --> 00:39:08.360
If you try to run from.
719
00:39:08.280 --> 00:39:10.639
The police, I heard him talking to you, trying to
720
00:39:10.679 --> 00:39:12.039
get you to give up.
721
00:39:13.480 --> 00:39:15.440
What I heard heard them.
722
00:39:15.400 --> 00:39:18.239
Saying is you know, just you know, just kind of
723
00:39:18.719 --> 00:39:22.039
get out. You know it's right, you're right for their time.
724
00:39:23.559 --> 00:39:25.000
Why weren't you complying.
725
00:39:27.400 --> 00:39:28.400
Because of what happened.
726
00:39:30.400 --> 00:39:34.320
Okay, yeap, what do you want.
727
00:39:34.199 --> 00:39:34.840
To tell your mom?
728
00:39:36.719 --> 00:39:36.920
Lover?
729
00:39:39.119 --> 00:39:42.960
Why do you tell your sister a love too? You
730
00:39:43.039 --> 00:39:47.760
wish just said it never happened. Seemed like you want
731
00:39:47.800 --> 00:39:48.360
to cry about it.
732
00:39:49.159 --> 00:39:50.800
Do a little to see the water in your eyes.
733
00:39:53.159 --> 00:39:56.840
Yeah, if you could take it back, you would.
734
00:39:59.639 --> 00:40:07.760
M As Ranger Briley leaves the room, Eddie once again
735
00:40:07.920 --> 00:40:10.880
checks with the officer just off camera. Sure to leave
736
00:40:10.960 --> 00:40:12.519
him with a lasting impression.
737
00:40:13.559 --> 00:40:15.800
So is everybody can talk about it. He's guts and
738
00:40:15.960 --> 00:40:18.719
let me get a smoke or that dude that just left.
739
00:40:20.079 --> 00:40:22.000
I said, he's gonna be doing all we're talking to.
740
00:40:23.119 --> 00:40:24.920
But I have to go outside and smoke something.
741
00:40:25.039 --> 00:40:27.199
So you can't get a cigaret.
742
00:40:28.400 --> 00:40:29.440
I have something before long.
743
00:40:31.400 --> 00:40:32.559
It's only a matter of time.
744
00:40:33.039 --> 00:40:35.320
You know you gonna get this one.
745
00:40:35.760 --> 00:40:39.320
They're coming. Can you get last team coming too?
746
00:40:40.199 --> 00:40:45.280
Yeah? You have plenty to eat on there.
747
00:40:45.360 --> 00:40:47.000
I don't got a hat out of him, nothing to
748
00:40:47.000 --> 00:40:50.280
eat on. You know, I'm needing none of my soul today. Everybody,
749
00:40:50.400 --> 00:40:51.880
he just keeps eating off my soul.
750
00:40:52.239 --> 00:40:55.599
So to that, I say, y'all, y'all can eat my home,
751
00:40:55.880 --> 00:40:56.480
you can eat my.
752
00:40:57.960 --> 00:41:04.119
Trying to eat myself with pigs.
753
00:41:06.639 --> 00:41:09.519
Charged with two counts of capital murder, Eddie is soon
754
00:41:09.599 --> 00:41:12.880
transported to the County jail to await trial. According to
755
00:41:12.920 --> 00:41:16.159
court documents, he was overheard by a deputy saying I
756
00:41:16.280 --> 00:41:19.400
shot them because they wouldn't talk to me, adding, I'm
757
00:41:19.480 --> 00:41:22.400
sure they've forgiven me. Eddie entered a plea of not
758
00:41:22.559 --> 00:41:26.840
guilty by reason of insanity. At his trial, experts presented
759
00:41:26.880 --> 00:41:31.000
conflicting views, some supporting and others questioning Eddie's state of
760
00:41:31.119 --> 00:41:34.719
mind during the incident. The jury ultimately found him guilty
761
00:41:34.800 --> 00:41:38.159
of two counts of capital murder, and on February twenty fourth,
762
00:41:38.239 --> 00:41:41.800
twenty fifteen, twenty five year old Eddie ray Routh was
763
00:41:41.840 --> 00:41:44.920
sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole,
764
00:41:45.400 --> 00:41:47.679
and ordered to pay one hundred and sixteen thousand, two
765
00:41:47.800 --> 00:41:51.559
hundred and fifty dollars in restitution. Though he appealed the conviction,
766
00:41:51.679 --> 00:41:56.119
in December twenty fifteen, the sentence was upheld. He's currently
767
00:41:56.199 --> 00:41:59.760
imprisoned at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in rochheron
768
