1
00:00:01.879 --> 00:00:05.240
Shun.
2
00:00:11.480 --> 00:00:14.160
Not every hero wears a cape. Some wear a badge
3
00:00:14.400 --> 00:00:16.800
and show up at the exact moment it matters most
4
00:00:16.960 --> 00:00:19.559
in the blur of chaos and danger. Their timing makes
5
00:00:19.559 --> 00:00:22.600
the difference between life and death. Here are six moments
6
00:00:22.640 --> 00:00:25.920
when cops stopped killers just in time. In two thousand
7
00:00:25.920 --> 00:00:29.440
and nine, Boynton Beach Police launched a sting operation that
8
00:00:29.519 --> 00:00:32.439
felt more like a crime thriller than real life. Dahlia
9
00:00:32.439 --> 00:00:35.079
Dippolito had asked a friend to help hire a hitman
10
00:00:35.280 --> 00:00:38.439
to kill her husband, but instead he went to the cops.
11
00:00:38.600 --> 00:00:42.840
What followed was a carefully staged trap, complete with undercover video,
12
00:00:43.159 --> 00:00:46.600
a fake crime scene, and one major twist. Her husband
13
00:00:46.719 --> 00:00:48.320
wasn't dead, but she didn't know.
14
00:00:48.240 --> 00:00:51.399
That at the house.
15
00:00:52.920 --> 00:00:53.479
Could you fill it?
16
00:00:53.560 --> 00:00:56.679
And after do it Wednesday morning? You know, he gets
17
00:00:56.679 --> 00:01:00.799
to an ahead. You know, I coup a couple of windows,
18
00:01:00.840 --> 00:01:03.240
make you look like a robbery that went bad. It's over.
19
00:01:03.320 --> 00:01:04.239
I've gotten out of there.
20
00:01:05.519 --> 00:01:07.120
I'm a lot supper than when I love.
21
00:01:07.120 --> 00:01:09.319
I'm your room and you're like, oh what a girl. Whatever,
22
00:01:10.079 --> 00:01:10.959
But that's.
23
00:01:10.840 --> 00:01:13.400
Not thank you.
24
00:01:13.439 --> 00:01:13.640
But I.
25
00:01:15.439 --> 00:01:17.799
Take to make sure everything's gonna be kind of okay.
26
00:01:17.879 --> 00:01:21.480
Sure, you just got sharg ing, bocking. That's all right, Okay,
27
00:01:21.799 --> 00:01:24.760
it's not gonna be able to hope he will be able.
28
00:01:24.560 --> 00:01:26.760
To like, I mean, he walks fine and everything like that,
29
00:01:26.920 --> 00:01:28.920
but I need now. It's gonna be like a little.
30
00:01:28.719 --> 00:01:32.760
Bit of a struggle. But now and when it's done,
31
00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:34.920
you know, you can have to happen. I'll change your
32
00:01:34.959 --> 00:01:35.959
mind even if you change.
33
00:01:35.799 --> 00:01:38.200
Your mind, not talking, not changing.
34
00:01:38.439 --> 00:01:41.519
No, there's no like I'm turning everyone.
35
00:01:41.599 --> 00:01:43.359
I'm positive, like, well, five thousands in.
36
00:01:43.640 --> 00:01:45.959
Sharp by the time you get back from the gym,
37
00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:46.920
you won't find two things.
38
00:01:47.120 --> 00:01:49.719
Dead body in the house, all right, or I'll go
39
00:01:49.879 --> 00:01:53.560
somewhere else you wanna get out, It would be somewhere when.
40
00:01:53.920 --> 00:01:55.719
Yeah, I'll go get my hair done or something, or
41
00:01:55.719 --> 00:01:57.560
I'll I'll be somewhere, but I need to go out
42
00:01:57.599 --> 00:01:57.920
of town.
43
00:01:58.359 --> 00:02:00.519
I never go anywhere right away and be like, oh,
44
00:02:00.519 --> 00:02:03.040
what a coincidence. You never go anywhere in the days.
45
00:02:03.120 --> 00:02:03.840
Leave it happened.
46
00:02:04.680 --> 00:02:07.760
So okay, after he kills whatever, your mom and all
47
00:02:07.760 --> 00:02:09.319
of them are not kind of like his mom is
48
00:02:09.360 --> 00:02:11.400
not going to get suspicious of you or anything.
49
00:02:12.319 --> 00:02:15.319
Do you know what somebody killing somebody?
50
00:02:15.439 --> 00:02:18.680
Come on, I mean, that's you know, nobody's going to
51
00:02:18.719 --> 00:02:21.240
be able to point a finger at kind of Tom
52
00:02:21.319 --> 00:02:23.400
like these guys went in, like he's been bumping into guys.
53
00:02:23.520 --> 00:02:25.039
I'm going to tell him about the guy ats target
54
00:02:25.080 --> 00:02:25.719
that we ran into.
55
00:02:25.800 --> 00:02:28.039
That's your guy that lives in our neighborhood too, that's
56
00:02:28.039 --> 00:02:29.479
on probation for something else.
57
00:02:29.800 --> 00:02:32.400
Now that you've heard her calmly plot her husband's murder,
58
00:02:32.680 --> 00:02:34.680
let's rewind to the moment the police showed up at
59
00:02:34.719 --> 00:02:37.360
her door. Watch closely as they deliver the news of
60
00:02:37.400 --> 00:02:40.439
his death, and she crumbles into tears, unaware the whole
61
00:02:40.479 --> 00:02:43.400
thing is a setup and her husband is very much alive.
62
00:02:44.840 --> 00:02:45.719
I'm Sergeant Ramsey.
63
00:02:45.800 --> 00:02:46.759
I'm going to call you.
64
00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:48.879
Thank you for comment. I'm sorry to call you. Listen,
65
00:02:49.039 --> 00:02:51.039
we had a report of a disturbance at your house
66
00:02:51.400 --> 00:02:55.039
and there were shots fired. Is your husband, Michael? Okay,
67
00:02:55.039 --> 00:02:56.719
I'm sorry to tell you man, he's been killed.
68
00:02:58.199 --> 00:02:58.840
He's killed.
69
00:03:00.759 --> 00:03:02.919
Are you sure that you don't know anybody who want
70
00:03:02.960 --> 00:03:05.560
to kill your husband? You wouldn't want to kill a hope,
71
00:03:07.039 --> 00:03:11.759
not at all. The game's over, Wet, Okay, there's no
72
00:03:11.879 --> 00:03:13.800
more games with you and I Now.
73
00:03:13.719 --> 00:03:15.240
We're gonna get down to serious business.
74
00:03:15.560 --> 00:03:16.879
I wanna know if you know this guy.
75
00:03:18.560 --> 00:03:24.400
Mare, let this guy in here, get over here, get
76
00:03:24.439 --> 00:03:27.439
over here. You know who this guy is.
77
00:03:27.800 --> 00:03:29.400
Now, you've never seen him before.
78
00:03:29.439 --> 00:03:30.560
I'm everything before.
79
00:03:31.039 --> 00:03:34.479
That's not the cover. Police officers. We filmed everything that
80
00:03:34.599 --> 00:03:38.840
you did, recorded everything that you did. You're going to
81
00:03:38.919 --> 00:03:42.479
jail for a solicitation the first degree murder of your husband.
82
00:03:42.919 --> 00:03:45.639
You do anything, you're going to jail.
83
00:03:45.919 --> 00:03:48.919
Any sad an you say, tell.
84
00:03:48.800 --> 00:03:53.039
Me you didn't do anything, You're going to jail today.
85
00:03:53.599 --> 00:03:56.599
Your husband is well in a lot your oh yeah,
86
00:03:56.960 --> 00:03:59.599
uh no, you never want to see your.
87
00:04:03.520 --> 00:04:10.120
Oh my god, come here, please come here, thank come here,
88
00:04:11.560 --> 00:04:13.319
come here, Please come here.
89
00:04:14.520 --> 00:04:14.960
Why not.
90
00:04:17.360 --> 00:04:18.079
Mike, come here?
91
00:04:18.279 --> 00:04:18.639
Please?
92
00:04:19.560 --> 00:04:22.639
Even after being caught on camera, Dahlia denied everything. But
93
00:04:22.759 --> 00:04:24.920
what about the man at the center of it all. Now,
94
00:04:25.160 --> 00:04:27.360
let's hear from him, the husband who discovered his own
95
00:04:27.399 --> 00:04:29.160
wife was plotting to have him killed.
96
00:04:29.319 --> 00:04:31.959
This is not our first day, Okay, it's not definitely
97
00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:34.560
not our second day. All right, it's an I'm going
98
00:04:34.600 --> 00:04:35.279
to investigation.
99
00:04:35.879 --> 00:04:36.040
Right.
100
00:04:36.519 --> 00:04:38.720
Not only do we have you have videotape, we have
101
00:04:38.839 --> 00:04:41.560
every conversation that you had leading to this point.
102
00:04:42.040 --> 00:04:44.160
I didn't exchange money with anyone.
103
00:04:47.439 --> 00:04:48.879
We talked about exchange of money.
104
00:04:48.959 --> 00:04:51.959
Then right, I didn't exchange money.
105
00:04:52.319 --> 00:04:54.199
Okay, why did you want Michael killed?
106
00:04:56.079 --> 00:04:57.480
I said I wanted to kill.
107
00:04:57.839 --> 00:04:58.279
Yeah, she did.
108
00:04:58.360 --> 00:04:59.000
It's on tape.
109
00:05:00.160 --> 00:05:02.439
It's on tap a lot, so he did.
110
00:05:03.000 --> 00:05:04.879
I didn't say, and I wanted him help.
111
00:05:05.480 --> 00:05:10.480
And at one point you say I wanted him dead
112
00:05:10.600 --> 00:05:10.800
in a.
113
00:05:11.120 --> 00:05:14.319
Five hundred percent, five thousand, five.
114
00:05:14.240 --> 00:05:17.639
Thousand anything that I want him? Do you wanna? Do
115
00:05:17.639 --> 00:05:18.680
you want us to play it for you?
116
00:05:19.360 --> 00:05:19.600
Please?
117
00:05:20.279 --> 00:05:21.120
I watch you for God.
118
00:05:21.879 --> 00:05:24.279
That's where you just listened to you. Do you agree
119
00:05:24.319 --> 00:05:26.480
that this was your voice on this video, on this audio?
120
00:05:26.680 --> 00:05:27.480
You just play it?
121
00:05:27.639 --> 00:05:31.560
Say yes, you're treating me lake or criminal and I'm not.
122
00:05:32.360 --> 00:05:34.519
I'm I'm not like, I'm not that kind of person.
123
00:05:34.720 --> 00:05:35.199
I'm just not.
124
00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:38.079
Why would you were just lacking nice to me?
125
00:05:38.240 --> 00:05:41.000
But it's like you're both already with your minds made.
126
00:05:40.879 --> 00:05:44.680
Up, minds made up because of wholly evidence. You didn't
127
00:05:44.720 --> 00:05:46.439
do anything and I didn't want anything.
128
00:05:46.800 --> 00:05:49.560
All was that I didn't do anything and I didn't
129
00:05:49.639 --> 00:05:50.360
want anything.
130
00:05:50.480 --> 00:05:51.199
Becaund show.
131
00:05:52.519 --> 00:05:56.560
Dahlia Dippolito's legal saga dragged on for years. Found guilty
132
00:05:56.800 --> 00:06:00.560
in twenty eleven and sentenced to twenty years. Her conviction
133
00:06:01.040 --> 00:06:04.160
was later overturned. A second trial ended in a hung jury,
134
00:06:04.360 --> 00:06:07.000
and while under house arrest, she gave birth to a son.
135
00:06:07.279 --> 00:06:10.439
But in twenty seventeen, her third trial sealed her fate,
136
00:06:10.519 --> 00:06:14.639
guilty again, this time sentenced to sixteen years. Appeals followed,
137
00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:17.800
but neither the Florida nor u s Supreme Court took
138
00:06:17.839 --> 00:06:21.000
her case. Just years later, in another state, a woman
139
00:06:21.079 --> 00:06:23.439
plotted a murder, only to find out the hitman she
140
00:06:23.600 --> 00:06:27.959
hired was actually a cop. In April twenty thirteen, twenty
141
00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:30.720
one year old Julia Murfeld sat across from a man
142
00:06:30.839 --> 00:06:33.279
she believed was a hit man, but he was actually
143
00:06:33.399 --> 00:06:36.959
an undercover cop and their entire conversation was being recorded.
144
00:06:37.279 --> 00:06:40.079
Calm and smiling, Julia detailed her plan to have her
145
00:06:40.160 --> 00:06:44.160
husband killed for a four hundred thousand dollars life insurance payout.
146
00:06:44.519 --> 00:06:47.319
Divorce felt too messy, she said this would be a
147
00:06:47.480 --> 00:06:50.240
clean getaway. Even the warning that there was no turning
148
00:06:50.360 --> 00:06:51.399
back didn't shake her.
149
00:06:51.759 --> 00:06:57.240
I sure as pole business that this cross nor Carlo's
150
00:06:57.319 --> 00:06:58.959
kind of time to a little bit about her was
151
00:06:59.000 --> 00:06:59.879
gown arm or rotch.
152
00:07:00.120 --> 00:07:05.120
Wasn't telling me all, well, that's tirely shun't be like
153
00:07:06.079 --> 00:07:07.959
on't off the fence, Like I know I want it done.
154
00:07:07.959 --> 00:07:11.319
I'm just trying to figure out there when I want
155
00:07:11.360 --> 00:07:11.639
it done.
156
00:07:12.160 --> 00:07:13.720
It has to be on a Thursday because that's the
157
00:07:13.800 --> 00:07:16.199
day that I work, But well I actually could be
158
00:07:16.199 --> 00:07:17.360
on a Thursday fighting or Saturday.
159
00:07:17.439 --> 00:07:23.639
Now, since Carlos isn't working. Harry told you how much,
160
00:07:23.720 --> 00:07:28.879
right he said, you mentioned fifty. How are you gonna are.
161
00:07:28.800 --> 00:07:29.279
We gonna work?
162
00:07:29.439 --> 00:07:31.199
That's what I was wondering because with Carlos, I was
163
00:07:31.240 --> 00:07:33.720
just gonna give him like eight or nine grand like
164
00:07:33.800 --> 00:07:37.680
every few weeks, because that way it's like under ten
165
00:07:37.800 --> 00:07:40.199
and everything and all that crap.
166
00:07:40.279 --> 00:07:42.199
So I don't know how you want to work that way.
167
00:07:42.279 --> 00:07:44.519
Well, I mean I would prefer to have something you
168
00:07:44.600 --> 00:07:48.000
know at the beginning. Well, the only that you're the
169
00:07:48.079 --> 00:07:50.079
only pattern that is, I can't.
170
00:07:50.199 --> 00:07:53.360
I don't have it until Julia had no idea that
171
00:07:53.480 --> 00:07:56.040
while she was being unfaithful, her colleague wasn't willing to
172
00:07:56.120 --> 00:07:58.879
let it happen. Instead, he went to the police, becoming
173
00:07:58.920 --> 00:08:01.920
part of a carefully planned sting operation designed to catch
174
00:08:01.959 --> 00:08:03.360
her before the plot could unfold.
175
00:08:03.879 --> 00:08:06.680
I have a girlfriend who wants to move in with me.
176
00:08:07.240 --> 00:08:08.639
And I don't want her to be scared to move
177
00:08:08.680 --> 00:08:10.519
in with me, and she thinks if she thinks that
178
00:08:10.680 --> 00:08:15.560
we got broken into and then Jacob, you know, want.
179
00:08:14.680 --> 00:08:16.600
To move So I'm kind of afraid that because I
180
00:08:16.680 --> 00:08:18.319
want her to move in with me because I don't
181
00:08:18.319 --> 00:08:19.319
want to live there by myself.
182
00:08:19.399 --> 00:08:21.839
Afterwards, well, you tell me all you want it done.
183
00:08:22.680 --> 00:08:24.639
I mean, I don't know what Carlos told me told
184
00:08:24.639 --> 00:08:27.879
you about me, but I mean I've done a couple
185
00:08:27.920 --> 00:08:30.800
of things like this before, and I mean I'll get
186
00:08:30.839 --> 00:08:32.240
it done, and I just need to know what you
187
00:08:32.320 --> 00:08:32.799
want done.
188
00:08:33.240 --> 00:08:37.279
I mean, you want me to if I could do
189
00:08:37.320 --> 00:08:39.039
it any way you want me to, but I just
190
00:08:39.120 --> 00:08:40.360
want to know how you want it done.
191
00:08:40.399 --> 00:08:42.679
They're whatever's easiest. If you can get him outside, that
192
00:08:42.720 --> 00:08:46.120
would be great. But I mean if you absolutely can't,
193
00:08:46.399 --> 00:08:47.840
I will. I'll understand, you know.
194
00:08:48.440 --> 00:08:50.759
So you want me to, like to, I guess, I
195
00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:53.960
guess I don't. I'm not understanding, so you don't. You
196
00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:56.120
don't want it done in the house though, because it
197
00:08:56.440 --> 00:08:57.679
would be messy in the house.
198
00:08:58.080 --> 00:09:00.080
Her reason for not wanting the murder to happen and
199
00:09:00.279 --> 00:09:02.759
inside the house was as bizarre as it was chilling.
200
00:09:02.960 --> 00:09:04.919
And deeply unsettling to say the least.
201
00:09:05.320 --> 00:09:07.080
Do you have any cash laying around then you can
202
00:09:07.679 --> 00:09:09.279
kind of give you like a little dot pay in
203
00:09:09.320 --> 00:09:09.639
the mind.
204
00:09:09.879 --> 00:09:11.440
Yeah, I can give you.
205
00:09:13.000 --> 00:09:15.679
I can give or whatever you got there you something
206
00:09:15.720 --> 00:09:17.879
to show me that you're serious about this. Bring there
207
00:09:17.919 --> 00:09:18.440
with you tomorrow.
208
00:09:18.480 --> 00:09:18.720
Okay?
209
00:09:18.799 --> 00:09:22.840
Tending though? Can it be either not this week?
210
00:09:22.879 --> 00:09:25.320
Can it be a week or two from now to
211
00:09:25.399 --> 00:09:27.759
as that surprises me with how you do it, because
212
00:09:27.840 --> 00:09:28.919
I mean, they're more shot.
213
00:09:28.720 --> 00:09:29.600
Down on when it happens.
214
00:09:30.600 --> 00:09:31.559
You don't want them to suffer.
215
00:09:31.639 --> 00:09:34.759
So I'll make it clean perfect, Okay, I'll make it
216
00:09:34.840 --> 00:09:37.519
quick and clean, and I'll just take those things to
217
00:09:37.600 --> 00:09:39.240
put on the list, and it's gonna be quick in
218
00:09:39.320 --> 00:09:39.639
and out.
219
00:09:39.759 --> 00:09:42.559
You know. I'll get the feedback to you later, which I.
220
00:09:42.639 --> 00:09:45.240
Just want to make it as as non suspicious as.
221
00:09:45.240 --> 00:09:48.720
You anticipate getting your insurance policy.
222
00:09:49.360 --> 00:09:51.399
I don't know from one of my one of my
223
00:09:51.440 --> 00:09:55.639
buddies told me that his guy friend his girlfriend was
224
00:09:55.679 --> 00:09:58.759
his insurance beneficiary and the guy was murdered, and she
225
00:09:58.879 --> 00:10:01.039
got it relatively clearly.
226
00:10:01.039 --> 00:10:02.440
He didn't give me a time thing, but she got
227
00:10:02.480 --> 00:10:02.879
it quickly.
228
00:10:05.639 --> 00:10:09.919
It shouldn't be I shouldn't be out than that you're
229
00:10:09.919 --> 00:10:11.519
gonna bring tomorrow, Yes, I want.
230
00:10:11.440 --> 00:10:14.720
You're gonna bring. I'm going to bring house plan not
231
00:10:14.960 --> 00:10:16.639
to get up to the room where he's gonna hang out,
232
00:10:16.639 --> 00:10:18.399
a picture of him, a list of the things you
233
00:10:18.440 --> 00:10:23.200
want take in, and a document. Good, thank you very much.
234
00:10:23.320 --> 00:10:27.120
Tomorrow four o'clock you go, my remember.
235
00:10:28.399 --> 00:10:31.360
The very next day, she returned with everything the undercover
236
00:10:31.480 --> 00:10:35.879
officer had asked for, making her deadly intentions unmistakably clear.
237
00:10:37.960 --> 00:10:38.240
Tell me.
238
00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:43.559
Your girl go up for me. I'm very good time.
239
00:10:43.720 --> 00:10:46.320
But that's the out of the house. And this is
240
00:10:46.399 --> 00:10:49.159
the street view, like where you're gonna park on the street.
241
00:10:52.679 --> 00:10:55.679
There's no street, that's just the land. Okay, So the streets.
242
00:10:55.279 --> 00:10:58.120
Here, and then the land's here, and then the fun
243
00:10:58.200 --> 00:11:00.480
door's here. This is the person that the door. That's
244
00:11:00.480 --> 00:11:02.840
the one we always use, and that's the key works
245
00:11:02.879 --> 00:11:05.240
to either door though, but this has gotten in closed port.
246
00:11:05.279 --> 00:11:06.480
You gotta go through the front door.
247
00:11:06.799 --> 00:11:08.639
Then you gotta go through the schools right into the house.
248
00:11:09.879 --> 00:11:10.000
Uh.
249
00:11:10.720 --> 00:11:12.360
That's projections to get to the house.
250
00:11:12.559 --> 00:11:16.159
Okay, did you bring the money? All right?
251
00:11:16.600 --> 00:11:19.840
Okay, just so you know, jac once I leave here
252
00:11:19.879 --> 00:11:23.559
to day it's on. Okay, so there's no car on
253
00:11:23.600 --> 00:11:25.799
and off. Once I leave from here, I'm playing and
254
00:11:25.840 --> 00:11:28.440
I'm doing it. You're gonna pay out, Okay, got it?
255
00:11:28.840 --> 00:11:29.039
Yeah?
256
00:11:29.240 --> 00:11:29.480
Okay?
257
00:11:29.559 --> 00:11:31.759
You said you want something about our gunshots? Is that
258
00:11:31.879 --> 00:11:32.679
how you want me to do it?
259
00:11:32.759 --> 00:11:35.000
You want me to shoot them unless unless you can
260
00:11:35.039 --> 00:11:35.799
do it painlessly?
261
00:11:35.960 --> 00:11:38.879
You're not breaking as that that would well, you know,
262
00:11:38.960 --> 00:11:41.519
I would prefer to use either a knife or that.
263
00:11:41.759 --> 00:11:43.360
It's quick and easy to know how.
264
00:11:43.360 --> 00:11:45.120
To say it was painless, best painless?
265
00:11:45.679 --> 00:11:46.840
Where do you want me to shoot them? Do you
266
00:11:46.879 --> 00:11:48.840
want an open casket, a close casket?
267
00:11:48.879 --> 00:11:49.320
What do you want?
268
00:11:49.360 --> 00:11:50.639
I don't have an open casket.
269
00:11:50.679 --> 00:11:53.200
I mean the most painless way you can possibly do it.
270
00:11:53.399 --> 00:11:55.879
I don't really, I don't care about anything else.
271
00:11:55.919 --> 00:11:56.639
Just make it painless.
272
00:11:57.279 --> 00:11:58.960
I'm gonna I'm just gonna take your head on there
273
00:11:59.000 --> 00:12:03.039
and I'm gonna shoot them, right. I mean, you've trapped
274
00:12:03.080 --> 00:12:06.399
this out obviously. Like I said, once I leave here today,
275
00:12:06.519 --> 00:12:09.120
it's a done deal. It's getting done. Whether you I'll
276
00:12:09.159 --> 00:12:11.080
be later bag out or not. I'm doing it after
277
00:12:11.159 --> 00:12:11.440
to day.
278
00:12:12.600 --> 00:12:15.960
You'll get the call on Julia Charlene Meherfeld was later arrested.
279
00:12:16.200 --> 00:12:18.399
And sentenced to up to twenty years in prison for
280
00:12:18.559 --> 00:12:22.120
plotting her husband's murder. Judge William Marrietti ordered she serve
281
00:12:22.200 --> 00:12:24.919
at least five years and eight months before parole. A
282
00:12:25.080 --> 00:12:28.279
decade later, in a completely different setting, a murder plot
283
00:12:28.399 --> 00:12:30.960
was already in motion until a routine stop over a
284
00:12:31.000 --> 00:12:35.200
broken headlight blew the whole thing wide open. On September eighteenth,
285
00:12:35.480 --> 00:12:38.840
twenty twenty three, a routine traffic stop in South Florida
286
00:12:39.120 --> 00:12:42.039
quickly turned unsettling. A team pulled over for a broken
287
00:12:42.120 --> 00:12:45.879
headlight made a chilling, unexpected confession, and what officers discovered
288
00:12:45.960 --> 00:12:47.879
next made things even more disturbing.
289
00:12:51.919 --> 00:12:58.960
Come on over here, So yeah, that's compluely out. Yeah.
290
00:12:59.360 --> 00:13:01.159
So it's a quick fix out o' rallies one like
291
00:13:01.279 --> 00:13:03.919
maybe sis books, special bread truck quick fixing.
292
00:13:04.200 --> 00:13:06.000
I've heard you can use like a wrench thing to
293
00:13:06.679 --> 00:13:08.159
hold out hol On out.
294
00:13:08.480 --> 00:13:12.039
Right after that, officers requested to search the vehicle. Horton
295
00:13:12.159 --> 00:13:16.159
hesitated visibly uneasy, and that hesitation wasn't without reason.
296
00:13:16.759 --> 00:13:20.919
Like I was saying, Carol, the car, what's something weeks
297
00:13:20.919 --> 00:13:23.399
scope and for someone there? Now, can you carefully search
298
00:13:23.440 --> 00:13:24.039
to make sure of that?
299
00:13:25.240 --> 00:13:25.440
Sure?
300
00:13:26.799 --> 00:13:27.000
Yeah?
301
00:13:27.120 --> 00:13:31.559
Yeah, let's se yes or no, I'm into like in
302
00:13:31.639 --> 00:13:32.759
Sematural podcast.
303
00:13:33.279 --> 00:13:37.080
Despite Horton's hesitation, officers proceeded with the vehicle search, and
304
00:13:37.399 --> 00:13:41.879
what they found raised serious red flags. Alongside a gun
305
00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:44.840
and a knife, there were notepads filled with disturbing handwritten
306
00:13:44.919 --> 00:13:47.600
messages hinting at something far more calculated.
307
00:13:47.799 --> 00:13:49.559
We're sure check box requick, make sure you've gotten on
308
00:13:49.600 --> 00:13:50.440
a charge over back.
309
00:13:50.879 --> 00:13:51.480
That's just my calls.
310
00:13:51.480 --> 00:13:52.799
So just keep your hays on your back while we're
311
00:13:52.799 --> 00:13:53.000
doing this.
312
00:13:53.080 --> 00:13:57.840
Okay, it needs to do. No, you're attained, You're not.
313
00:13:57.879 --> 00:13:58.080
You're not.
314
00:13:58.240 --> 00:13:59.440
This doesn't mean you're going to Chata.
315
00:13:59.519 --> 00:14:01.879
Well, Horton sat detained in the back of the police car.
316
00:14:02.159 --> 00:14:07.720
Officers uncovered marijuana, along with other unsettling evidence that deepened
317
00:14:07.799 --> 00:14:08.320
their concern.
318
00:14:08.519 --> 00:14:10.799
Just speaking of my partner, as I was searching a
319
00:14:10.840 --> 00:14:12.679
car and stuff, so I found the bomb. It's like
320
00:14:12.720 --> 00:14:14.600
I said, I feature you being super honest with That's
321
00:14:14.639 --> 00:14:16.480
all it is. I mean just some water and stuff
322
00:14:16.480 --> 00:14:19.919
like that. It's not so as Also that my partner
323
00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:20.440
was before me.
324
00:14:20.559 --> 00:14:22.720
I had some thoughts about some stuff going on down
325
00:14:22.759 --> 00:14:23.480
in Miami.
326
00:14:23.320 --> 00:14:24.080
So what's up with that?
327
00:14:27.120 --> 00:14:30.120
Just I want to drag down to Miami for one
328
00:14:30.320 --> 00:14:33.679
age road trip too, to go to a church to
329
00:14:33.799 --> 00:14:35.440
plan for later plants later.
330
00:14:35.519 --> 00:14:38.720
What'd you got planned later? A tag layer? Tack layer?
331
00:14:39.080 --> 00:14:39.399
What's that?
332
00:14:39.960 --> 00:14:40.240
All right?
333
00:14:40.279 --> 00:14:44.320
It's an attack? Oh? Attack?
334
00:14:44.519 --> 00:14:44.720
Yeah?
335
00:14:44.799 --> 00:14:47.759
Oh a tech I heard tackler? Or what kind of attack?
336
00:14:48.600 --> 00:14:51.639
Like either shooting or stampings?
337
00:14:52.799 --> 00:14:53.080
Okay?
338
00:14:53.360 --> 00:14:55.159
Have you been having the saws recently? Yes?
339
00:14:55.639 --> 00:14:55.919
A lot?
340
00:14:56.120 --> 00:14:58.039
Or just severy now and then a lot?
341
00:14:58.159 --> 00:15:00.960
Okay have you been Have you tried to some kind
342
00:15:01.000 --> 00:15:02.639
of professional about this kind of stuff?
343
00:15:02.679 --> 00:15:02.799
Or no?
344
00:15:03.200 --> 00:15:05.080
I tried to get if I tried to get to
345
00:15:05.159 --> 00:15:06.279
a therapist.
346
00:15:05.960 --> 00:15:08.799
But that it was like a laitlist or something. Oh okay,
347
00:15:09.120 --> 00:15:11.600
all right, Dan, So you were going down to Miami,
348
00:15:11.720 --> 00:15:13.600
go to go first hangout and you would go to
349
00:15:13.639 --> 00:15:14.919
a church. What's what was the church for?
350
00:15:16.399 --> 00:15:16.639
Church?
351
00:15:16.799 --> 00:15:20.480
Was location of my later attack? Closely?
352
00:15:20.759 --> 00:15:20.960
Yeah?
353
00:15:21.639 --> 00:15:24.360
It was for your later attack? Yes, okay, what was
354
00:15:24.759 --> 00:15:27.279
up with the What was your other location for a tech.
355
00:15:28.679 --> 00:15:29.120
High school?
356
00:15:29.519 --> 00:15:34.799
Yeah? And Okachobe up north Okachobe? What's a What's particular
357
00:15:34.840 --> 00:15:38.600
about Okachobe is that it's a small town up north
358
00:15:38.639 --> 00:15:41.360
the lake mm hmm. Yeah, and I'm familiar with that area.
359
00:15:41.360 --> 00:15:43.600
It's a nice area. Yeah, what's up? But what brings
360
00:15:43.639 --> 00:15:47.080
you to that area of the high school? Some issue
361
00:15:47.080 --> 00:15:51.320
that had with an administrator? Okay, it's still in school already.
362
00:15:51.440 --> 00:15:52.320
So with those issues, you.
363
00:15:52.399 --> 00:15:54.559
Wanted to just basically go over there and attack them
364
00:15:55.000 --> 00:15:57.240
or have an attack plan? What were you specifically wanted
365
00:15:57.240 --> 00:16:01.039
to do? I wanted to shoot. I'm want to shoot
366
00:16:01.159 --> 00:16:02.679
untill like fifteen people?
367
00:16:02.919 --> 00:16:03.519
Fifteen people?
368
00:16:03.679 --> 00:16:04.240
Why fifteen?
369
00:16:05.879 --> 00:16:06.279
Actually?
370
00:16:06.799 --> 00:16:10.399
Yeah, fifteen because there was an odd number. Do you
371
00:16:10.519 --> 00:16:11.120
like odd numbers?
372
00:16:11.279 --> 00:16:11.480
Yeah?
373
00:16:11.799 --> 00:16:12.360
God numbers.
374
00:16:12.639 --> 00:16:15.519
What began as a routine traffic stop turned into a
375
00:16:15.639 --> 00:16:19.600
possible life saving intervention. At just nineteen, Horton appeared not
376
00:16:19.679 --> 00:16:22.519
only dangerous but clearly in need of urgent mental health care.
377
00:16:22.799 --> 00:16:24.039
I don't need you to tell me what you think.
378
00:16:24.080 --> 00:16:24.600
I need to hear.
379
00:16:25.159 --> 00:16:28.039
I don't need you to tell me what you think
380
00:16:28.320 --> 00:16:30.360
I have to be told so you can get away
381
00:16:30.559 --> 00:16:32.840
or get out or if you're leaving here regardless. I'm
382
00:16:32.840 --> 00:16:35.600
not trying to bake correct you anymore. But I need
383
00:16:35.679 --> 00:16:37.039
to know what's going on with you because I can't
384
00:16:37.039 --> 00:16:38.080
help you if you're.
385
00:16:37.960 --> 00:16:40.919
Not honest to open up to me. Does that make sense?
386
00:16:41.159 --> 00:16:41.360
Yes?
387
00:16:41.960 --> 00:16:44.399
So what's what is the deal? Do you do you
388
00:16:44.480 --> 00:16:48.600
still want to hurt people? Do you want to carry
389
00:16:48.639 --> 00:16:51.279
out it is in the future you think about it later?
390
00:16:51.600 --> 00:16:51.759
Is it?
391
00:16:53.000 --> 00:16:53.039
Is?
392
00:16:53.120 --> 00:16:53.159
It?
393
00:16:53.360 --> 00:16:55.039
Is it something We're going to turn on the news
394
00:16:55.120 --> 00:16:57.279
one morning or one evening and we're gonna see Henry
395
00:16:58.000 --> 00:16:59.720
on the news for doing that.
396
00:17:01.279 --> 00:17:04.559
Now, now, I'm gonna be honest with you.
397
00:17:04.680 --> 00:17:07.759
Man, you said no, but you you you got it.
398
00:17:07.960 --> 00:17:10.000
See you got You're on your.
399
00:17:09.960 --> 00:17:13.599
Face right and you're like, uh right, and be honest.
400
00:17:13.839 --> 00:17:14.880
No, is the answer that you.
401
00:17:14.920 --> 00:17:18.880
Think I want to hear? Right? What's the truth? Where
402
00:17:18.960 --> 00:17:21.079
where we're being honest with you? And like I said,
403
00:17:21.119 --> 00:17:22.039
we just want to know the truth.
404
00:17:22.160 --> 00:17:27.440
You can't be arrested for thoughts and dreams and stuff
405
00:17:27.559 --> 00:17:29.119
like that, right, So we're just trying.
406
00:17:28.920 --> 00:17:32.279
To gauge where you're at right now in that is
407
00:17:32.640 --> 00:17:35.839
Would it be fair to say that once you once
408
00:17:35.839 --> 00:17:38.200
you get off the meds, you're gonna go back to
409
00:17:38.200 --> 00:17:39.640
playing that and I'm probably gonna see you one the
410
00:17:39.680 --> 00:17:41.200
news probably.
411
00:17:41.880 --> 00:17:45.200
Horton ultimately pleaded guilty to two counts of making written
412
00:17:45.240 --> 00:17:48.119
threats to kill or cause harm, along with one count
413
00:17:48.119 --> 00:17:51.359
of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was sentenced to three
414
00:17:51.720 --> 00:17:54.880
years in prison The next case was far more intense
415
00:17:55.079 --> 00:17:58.599
and dangerously close to turning fatal. Officers rushed into a
416
00:17:58.680 --> 00:18:01.519
chaotic scene, stepping in just in time to save a
417
00:18:01.559 --> 00:18:05.200
young woman from a brutal stabbing. On November sixth, twenty
418
00:18:05.359 --> 00:18:09.519
twenty two, in Baltimore, a disturbing scene unfolded when Tyree Morehead,
419
00:18:09.640 --> 00:18:13.200
an activist known for painting no shoot zones across the city,
420
00:18:13.400 --> 00:18:15.599
was found straddling the woman with a butcher knife. He
421
00:18:15.720 --> 00:18:19.279
was given multiple commands from officer Zachary Rutherford to drop
422
00:18:19.359 --> 00:18:22.920
his knife, but they were ignored. What happened next changed everything.
423
00:18:23.039 --> 00:18:29.839
Say us good ouse, good down, good down.
424
00:18:36.960 --> 00:18:40.119
In moments like this, there's no time to hesitate. Officers
425
00:18:40.240 --> 00:18:43.119
act in split seconds to save lives. With a knife
426
00:18:43.119 --> 00:18:45.799
at her head, the woman's life hung in the balance,
427
00:18:46.039 --> 00:18:47.839
and the response had to be immediate.
428
00:18:48.000 --> 00:18:48.359
Shots.
429
00:18:48.400 --> 00:18:49.599
What shots? Why?
430
00:18:49.960 --> 00:18:53.079
Don't move? Don't move, ma'am you okay.
431
00:18:53.400 --> 00:18:55.519
Let's take a look at the shooting from another angle.
432
00:18:56.200 --> 00:18:59.480
Good douce, good down, good do good doo.
433
00:19:08.720 --> 00:19:12.039
No charges have been filed against officer Zachary Rutherford. The
434
00:19:12.160 --> 00:19:15.440
case is under routine internal review, but officials say the
435
00:19:15.519 --> 00:19:18.440
shooting was justified given the clear and immediate threat to
436
00:19:18.480 --> 00:19:21.440
the woman's life. In a similar turn of events, officers
437
00:19:21.599 --> 00:19:24.839
saved another life, this time in California, stepping in just
438
00:19:25.039 --> 00:19:29.519
moments before tragedy could unfold. On April tenth, twenty twenty five,
439
00:19:29.880 --> 00:19:33.279
in Fresno, California, a disturbing scene unfolded at the Manchester
440
00:19:33.400 --> 00:19:36.440
Transit Center when officers responded to reports of a woman
441
00:19:36.640 --> 00:19:39.519
armed with a knife. The suspect, thirty nine year old
442
00:19:39.599 --> 00:19:43.400
Joanna Lopez, confronted a sixty eight year old bystander just
443
00:19:43.680 --> 00:19:46.599
stepping off a bus. What followed was a tense, high
444
00:19:46.640 --> 00:19:49.039
stakes standoff. No one saw comings.
445
00:19:53.079 --> 00:19:58.000
I at yourself, is nab ornackey to get a throw in?
446
00:19:58.119 --> 00:20:34.440
Fact? Can find out which is that? What's yet?
447
00:20:40.000 --> 00:20:42.480
This wasn't a routine call. A woman held a knife
448
00:20:42.519 --> 00:20:45.440
to an old lady's neck in broad daylight. Officers had
449
00:20:45.480 --> 00:20:48.279
one clear choice to act fast and save the victim.
450
00:20:48.799 --> 00:20:50.799
No matter what, what are you?
451
00:20:53.599 --> 00:20:54.319
What is she worrying?
452
00:21:00.960 --> 00:21:02.400
Hey? Everybody move out the way?
453
00:21:03.680 --> 00:21:04.720
Everybody move out the way?
454
00:21:05.799 --> 00:21:10.839
Hey put the knife down? Yeah the way? Yeah the way.
455
00:21:10.960 --> 00:21:14.519
Hey put the knife out. Wife said to hey, put
456
00:21:14.559 --> 00:21:15.119
the knife out.
457
00:21:15.920 --> 00:21:16.400
I guess up.
458
00:21:16.480 --> 00:21:21.559
Put the knife down, out, put the knife down. Don't know, hey,
459
00:21:22.079 --> 00:21:25.079
get down, put the knife down.
460
00:21:30.680 --> 00:21:31.599
Frank with you. Ois.
461
00:21:34.920 --> 00:21:38.559
Joanna Lopez later died at the hospital. No civilians were injured.
462
00:21:38.799 --> 00:21:41.599
The case remains under review, but police say the officer
463
00:21:41.680 --> 00:21:44.559
made a split second decision to stop a deadly threat
464
00:21:44.799 --> 00:21:47.799
and protect an innocent life. While officers managed to save
465
00:21:47.880 --> 00:21:50.640
Joanna Lopez just in time, the next case took a
466
00:21:50.720 --> 00:21:53.680
darker turn. The victim was already gravely injured by the
467
00:21:53.720 --> 00:21:57.880
time help arrived. On May eleventh, twenty twenty three, in
468
00:21:57.960 --> 00:22:02.200
Fairfield Township, Ohio, neighbor called nine one one after finding
469
00:22:02.279 --> 00:22:05.519
fifty year old Brenda Scott badly burned and injured beneath
470
00:22:05.559 --> 00:22:08.240
the second story window. At first, it looked like a
471
00:22:08.319 --> 00:22:11.200
tragic fall, but when Brenda spoke, it quickly became clear
472
00:22:11.400 --> 00:22:12.200
this was no accident.
473
00:22:12.359 --> 00:22:14.400
In nine on one, what is the address of the emergency?
474
00:22:14.799 --> 00:22:18.039
My neighbor behind my house laying out and looks like
475
00:22:18.160 --> 00:22:19.079
you caught on fire.
476
00:22:19.680 --> 00:22:21.519
Okay, can you wata real quick?
477
00:22:21.799 --> 00:22:22.599
See if she can get.
478
00:22:22.519 --> 00:22:23.039
Her to wake up.
479
00:22:23.599 --> 00:22:25.839
She's the way she's talking to me. I can get
480
00:22:26.000 --> 00:22:27.000
fence open to get over it.
481
00:22:27.319 --> 00:22:28.559
She's she's hurt bad.
482
00:22:29.039 --> 00:22:30.279
Ask her she knows what happened?
483
00:22:31.119 --> 00:22:31.759
What happened?
484
00:22:33.559 --> 00:22:37.960
So much ceter? He should set her on fire, your son.
485
00:22:38.640 --> 00:22:41.240
Despite her critical burns, the woman told a neighbor who
486
00:22:41.279 --> 00:22:43.960
did it, her voice clear on the nine one one call.
487
00:22:44.359 --> 00:22:47.160
That crucial detail helped officers quickly zero in on the
488
00:22:47.200 --> 00:22:49.079
suspect as they rescued the victim.
489
00:22:49.359 --> 00:22:52.839
Can you ask her son, Jane, if he has any weapons?
490
00:22:53.640 --> 00:22:53.880
Does it?
491
00:22:53.960 --> 00:22:55.000
Do you know you any weapons?
492
00:22:55.960 --> 00:22:56.160
Yes?
493
00:22:58.720 --> 00:23:01.839
Water, we gasoline, threw it on her, you said, with
494
00:23:01.960 --> 00:23:09.400
your boyfriend, her boyfriend's son, Yes, he said.
495
00:23:09.480 --> 00:23:10.000
She Please her.
496
00:23:10.119 --> 00:23:11.400
He's got asthma. She can't breathe.
497
00:23:12.599 --> 00:23:15.599
Do you see any barns on her? I do her.
498
00:23:15.839 --> 00:23:20.599
Her skin is completely covered, burns back everywhere. There's actually
499
00:23:20.640 --> 00:23:23.160
smoke coming out of the helm on the top floor.
500
00:23:24.519 --> 00:23:26.359
He said, the house on fire. The house on fire too,
501
00:23:26.960 --> 00:23:31.119
Oh my god, Oh my gosh. And her skin is
502
00:23:31.440 --> 00:23:31.839
off of her.
503
00:23:32.000 --> 00:23:35.519
This before I've got the female on the back, severe burns. Control,
504
00:23:35.720 --> 00:23:36.640
give me an off channel.
505
00:23:40.599 --> 00:23:43.640
He had stopped four back here on.
506
00:23:43.720 --> 00:23:54.640
The ground, severely burned. Sure, honey, stay with me.
507
00:23:54.680 --> 00:23:55.200
I'm officer.
508
00:23:55.240 --> 00:23:57.559
Step and just stay with me. Okay, I got the
509
00:23:57.640 --> 00:23:58.720
matics are coming to get.
510
00:23:58.559 --> 00:23:58.960
You right now.
511
00:23:59.000 --> 00:24:03.680
Cutting to breathe. Huh, I done pay health, I can't breath.
512
00:24:04.200 --> 00:24:06.640
Moments later, a man walked out of the house, but
513
00:24:06.759 --> 00:24:09.400
thanks to what Brenda had already told a neighbor, officers
514
00:24:09.440 --> 00:24:10.960
knew exactly who he was.
515
00:24:11.640 --> 00:24:12.400
Come to me now.
516
00:24:13.880 --> 00:24:17.720
Off, Okay, I don't know what happened. Just just went off, bro.
517
00:24:18.039 --> 00:24:21.279
I try to try to stop so I find out
518
00:24:21.279 --> 00:24:24.359
what's going on. All right, So what happens is ever
519
00:24:24.440 --> 00:24:29.400
buy us in the house? Who step mother? Your stepmother
520
00:24:29.480 --> 00:24:37.400
jumped out the back. Yes, what's your name? Robbie? Okay?
521
00:24:41.440 --> 00:24:42.799
Six before I got the suspect.
522
00:24:43.279 --> 00:24:43.920
Hey, custody.
523
00:24:44.599 --> 00:24:47.079
She's in the very back because you got somebody. Yeah,
524
00:24:47.119 --> 00:24:47.519
it's bad.
525
00:24:52.759 --> 00:24:53.759
Was two tight on your Robbie?
526
00:24:53.880 --> 00:24:54.400
No good?
527
00:24:56.640 --> 00:24:58.359
She says, she needs her a hailo out of the house.
528
00:24:58.640 --> 00:25:01.960
She's burned bad. Do you need any medical treatment? I
529
00:25:02.079 --> 00:25:02.839
kind of breathing.
530
00:25:02.880 --> 00:25:05.599
Okay, it was.
531
00:25:05.720 --> 00:25:07.000
I got a whole hat mess right now.
532
00:25:07.920 --> 00:25:10.440
So here's what's gonna happen. What set you back in
533
00:25:10.440 --> 00:25:11.680
your Roomaine for a minute.
534
00:25:11.720 --> 00:25:18.000
Okay, I got some other guys coming. I'll hear that
535
00:25:18.079 --> 00:25:22.160
hack in a minute. I was set back there for you.
536
00:25:22.200 --> 00:25:23.440
Sure those aren't too tight you okay?
537
00:25:24.279 --> 00:25:25.319
All right, I got a lot going on.
538
00:25:25.400 --> 00:25:28.279
Give me a minute, say anything about what happened.
539
00:25:28.759 --> 00:25:32.680
No, she was a lace T was a domestic.
540
00:25:33.839 --> 00:25:37.200
You're saying that he wore gas on her liver.
541
00:25:39.519 --> 00:25:42.279
There were clear signs Brenda had been brutally assaulted before
542
00:25:42.359 --> 00:25:46.799
being thrown out. Her teeth were shattered, her body battered. Yet,
543
00:25:46.839 --> 00:25:50.480
despite the pain, she bravely answered every question she could.
544
00:25:51.400 --> 00:25:57.039
I guess I'm gonna go with yes, Okay, were you guys?
545
00:25:57.599 --> 00:26:00.160
Did he set you on fire? What we got was
546
00:26:00.240 --> 00:26:01.039
arguing about.
547
00:26:03.359 --> 00:26:03.960
What happened.
548
00:26:07.920 --> 00:26:11.599
Despite the quick response and every effort made, officers were
549
00:26:11.680 --> 00:26:15.000
unable to save Brenda. On June ninth, twenty twenty three,
550
00:26:15.200 --> 00:26:18.200
after twenty nine agonizing days in the hospital, she succumbed
551
00:26:18.240 --> 00:26:21.400
to her injuries, turning the brutal assault into a homicide.

1
00:00:01.879 --> 00:00:05.240
Shun.
2
00:00:11.480 --> 00:00:14.160
Not every hero wears a cape. Some wear a badge
3
00:00:14.400 --> 00:00:16.800
and show up at the exact moment it matters most
4
00:00:16.960 --> 00:00:19.559
in the blur of chaos and danger. Their timing makes
5
00:00:19.559 --> 00:00:22.600
the difference between life and death. Here are six moments
6
00:00:22.640 --> 00:00:25.920
when cops stopped killers just in time. In two thousand
7
00:00:25.920 --> 00:00:29.440
and nine, Boynton Beach Police launched a sting operation that
8
00:00:29.519 --> 00:00:32.439
felt more like a crime thriller than real life. Dahlia
9
00:00:32.439 --> 00:00:35.079
Dippolito had asked a friend to help hire a hitman
10
00:00:35.280 --> 00:00:38.439
to kill her husband, but instead he went to the cops.
11
00:00:38.600 --> 00:00:42.840
What followed was a carefully staged trap, complete with undercover video,
12
00:00:43.159 --> 00:00:46.600
a fake crime scene, and one major twist. Her husband
13
00:00:46.719 --> 00:00:48.320
wasn't dead, but she didn't know.
14
00:00:48.240 --> 00:00:51.399
That at the house.
15
00:00:52.920 --> 00:00:53.479
Could you fill it?
16
00:00:53.560 --> 00:00:56.679
And after do it Wednesday morning? You know, he gets
17
00:00:56.679 --> 00:01:00.799
to an ahead. You know, I coup a couple of windows,
18
00:01:00.840 --> 00:01:03.240
make you look like a robbery that went bad. It's over.
19
00:01:03.320 --> 00:01:04.239
I've gotten out of there.
20
00:01:05.519 --> 00:01:07.120
I'm a lot supper than when I love.
21
00:01:07.120 --> 00:01:09.319
I'm your room and you're like, oh what a girl. Whatever,
22
00:01:10.079 --> 00:01:10.959
But that's.
23
00:01:10.840 --> 00:01:13.400
Not thank you.
24
00:01:13.439 --> 00:01:13.640
But I.
25
00:01:15.439 --> 00:01:17.799
Take to make sure everything's gonna be kind of okay.
26
00:01:17.879 --> 00:01:21.480
Sure, you just got sharg ing, bocking. That's all right, Okay,
27
00:01:21.799 --> 00:01:24.760
it's not gonna be able to hope he will be able.
28
00:01:24.560 --> 00:01:26.760
To like, I mean, he walks fine and everything like that,
29
00:01:26.920 --> 00:01:28.920
but I need now. It's gonna be like a little.
30
00:01:28.719 --> 00:01:32.760
Bit of a struggle. But now and when it's done,
31
00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:34.920
you know, you can have to happen. I'll change your
32
00:01:34.959 --> 00:01:35.959
mind even if you change.
33
00:01:35.799 --> 00:01:38.200
Your mind, not talking, not changing.
34
00:01:38.439 --> 00:01:41.519
No, there's no like I'm turning everyone.
35
00:01:41.599 --> 00:01:43.359
I'm positive, like, well, five thousands in.
36
00:01:43.640 --> 00:01:45.959
Sharp by the time you get back from the gym,
37
00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:46.920
you won't find two things.
38
00:01:47.120 --> 00:01:49.719
Dead body in the house, all right, or I'll go
39
00:01:49.879 --> 00:01:53.560
somewhere else you wanna get out, It would be somewhere when.
40
00:01:53.920 --> 00:01:55.719
Yeah, I'll go get my hair done or something, or
41
00:01:55.719 --> 00:01:57.560
I'll I'll be somewhere, but I need to go out
42
00:01:57.599 --> 00:01:57.920
of town.
43
00:01:58.359 --> 00:02:00.519
I never go anywhere right away and be like, oh,
44
00:02:00.519 --> 00:02:03.040
what a coincidence. You never go anywhere in the days.
45
00:02:03.120 --> 00:02:03.840
Leave it happened.
46
00:02:04.680 --> 00:02:07.760
So okay, after he kills whatever, your mom and all
47
00:02:07.760 --> 00:02:09.319
of them are not kind of like his mom is
48
00:02:09.360 --> 00:02:11.400
not going to get suspicious of you or anything.
49
00:02:12.319 --> 00:02:15.319
Do you know what somebody killing somebody?
50
00:02:15.439 --> 00:02:18.680
Come on, I mean, that's you know, nobody's going to
51
00:02:18.719 --> 00:02:21.240
be able to point a finger at kind of Tom
52
00:02:21.319 --> 00:02:23.400
like these guys went in, like he's been bumping into guys.
53
00:02:23.520 --> 00:02:25.039
I'm going to tell him about the guy ats target
54
00:02:25.080 --> 00:02:25.719
that we ran into.
55
00:02:25.800 --> 00:02:28.039
That's your guy that lives in our neighborhood too, that's
56
00:02:28.039 --> 00:02:29.479
on probation for something else.
57
00:02:29.800 --> 00:02:32.400
Now that you've heard her calmly plot her husband's murder,
58
00:02:32.680 --> 00:02:34.680
let's rewind to the moment the police showed up at
59
00:02:34.719 --> 00:02:37.360
her door. Watch closely as they deliver the news of
60
00:02:37.400 --> 00:02:40.439
his death, and she crumbles into tears, unaware the whole
61
00:02:40.479 --> 00:02:43.400
thing is a setup and her husband is very much alive.
62
00:02:44.840 --> 00:02:45.719
I'm Sergeant Ramsey.
63
00:02:45.800 --> 00:02:46.759
I'm going to call you.
64
00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:48.879
Thank you for comment. I'm sorry to call you. Listen,
65
00:02:49.039 --> 00:02:51.039
we had a report of a disturbance at your house
66
00:02:51.400 --> 00:02:55.039
and there were shots fired. Is your husband, Michael? Okay,
67
00:02:55.039 --> 00:02:56.719
I'm sorry to tell you man, he's been killed.
68
00:02:58.199 --> 00:02:58.840
He's killed.
69
00:03:00.759 --> 00:03:02.919
Are you sure that you don't know anybody who want
70
00:03:02.960 --> 00:03:05.560
to kill your husband? You wouldn't want to kill a hope,
71
00:03:07.039 --> 00:03:11.759
not at all. The game's over, Wet, Okay, there's no
72
00:03:11.879 --> 00:03:13.800
more games with you and I Now.
73
00:03:13.719 --> 00:03:15.240
We're gonna get down to serious business.
74
00:03:15.560 --> 00:03:16.879
I wanna know if you know this guy.
75
00:03:18.560 --> 00:03:24.400
Mare, let this guy in here, get over here, get
76
00:03:24.439 --> 00:03:27.439
over here. You know who this guy is.
77
00:03:27.800 --> 00:03:29.400
Now, you've never seen him before.
78
00:03:29.439 --> 00:03:30.560
I'm everything before.
79
00:03:31.039 --> 00:03:34.479
That's not the cover. Police officers. We filmed everything that
80
00:03:34.599 --> 00:03:38.840
you did, recorded everything that you did. You're going to
81
00:03:38.919 --> 00:03:42.479
jail for a solicitation the first degree murder of your husband.
82
00:03:42.919 --> 00:03:45.639
You do anything, you're going to jail.
83
00:03:45.919 --> 00:03:48.919
Any sad an you say, tell.
84
00:03:48.800 --> 00:03:53.039
Me you didn't do anything, You're going to jail today.
85
00:03:53.599 --> 00:03:56.599
Your husband is well in a lot your oh yeah,
86
00:03:56.960 --> 00:03:59.599
uh no, you never want to see your.
87
00:04:03.520 --> 00:04:10.120
Oh my god, come here, please come here, thank come here,
88
00:04:11.560 --> 00:04:13.319
come here, Please come here.
89
00:04:14.520 --> 00:04:14.960
Why not.
90
00:04:17.360 --> 00:04:18.079
Mike, come here?
91
00:04:18.279 --> 00:04:18.639
Please?
92
00:04:19.560 --> 00:04:22.639
Even after being caught on camera, Dahlia denied everything. But
93
00:04:22.759 --> 00:04:24.920
what about the man at the center of it all. Now,
94
00:04:25.160 --> 00:04:27.360
let's hear from him, the husband who discovered his own
95
00:04:27.399 --> 00:04:29.160
wife was plotting to have him killed.
96
00:04:29.319 --> 00:04:31.959
This is not our first day, Okay, it's not definitely
97
00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:34.560
not our second day. All right, it's an I'm going
98
00:04:34.600 --> 00:04:35.279
to investigation.
99
00:04:35.879 --> 00:04:36.040
Right.
100
00:04:36.519 --> 00:04:38.720
Not only do we have you have videotape, we have
101
00:04:38.839 --> 00:04:41.560
every conversation that you had leading to this point.
102
00:04:42.040 --> 00:04:44.160
I didn't exchange money with anyone.
103
00:04:47.439 --> 00:04:48.879
We talked about exchange of money.
104
00:04:48.959 --> 00:04:51.959
Then right, I didn't exchange money.
105
00:04:52.319 --> 00:04:54.199
Okay, why did you want Michael killed?
106
00:04:56.079 --> 00:04:57.480
I said I wanted to kill.
107
00:04:57.839 --> 00:04:58.279
Yeah, she did.
108
00:04:58.360 --> 00:04:59.000
It's on tape.
109
00:05:00.160 --> 00:05:02.439
It's on tap a lot, so he did.
110
00:05:03.000 --> 00:05:04.879
I didn't say, and I wanted him help.
111
00:05:05.480 --> 00:05:10.480
And at one point you say I wanted him dead
112
00:05:10.600 --> 00:05:10.800
in a.
113
00:05:11.120 --> 00:05:14.319
Five hundred percent, five thousand, five.
114
00:05:14.240 --> 00:05:17.639
Thousand anything that I want him? Do you wanna? Do
115
00:05:17.639 --> 00:05:18.680
you want us to play it for you?
116
00:05:19.360 --> 00:05:19.600
Please?
117
00:05:20.279 --> 00:05:21.120
I watch you for God.
118
00:05:21.879 --> 00:05:24.279
That's where you just listened to you. Do you agree
119
00:05:24.319 --> 00:05:26.480
that this was your voice on this video, on this audio?
120
00:05:26.680 --> 00:05:27.480
You just play it?
121
00:05:27.639 --> 00:05:31.560
Say yes, you're treating me lake or criminal and I'm not.
122
00:05:32.360 --> 00:05:34.519
I'm I'm not like, I'm not that kind of person.
123
00:05:34.720 --> 00:05:35.199
I'm just not.
124
00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:38.079
Why would you were just lacking nice to me?
125
00:05:38.240 --> 00:05:41.000
But it's like you're both already with your minds made.
126
00:05:40.879 --> 00:05:44.680
Up, minds made up because of wholly evidence. You didn't
127
00:05:44.720 --> 00:05:46.439
do anything and I didn't want anything.
128
00:05:46.800 --> 00:05:49.560
All was that I didn't do anything and I didn't
129
00:05:49.639 --> 00:05:50.360
want anything.
130
00:05:50.480 --> 00:05:51.199
Becaund show.
131
00:05:52.519 --> 00:05:56.560
Dahlia Dippolito's legal saga dragged on for years. Found guilty
132
00:05:56.800 --> 00:06:00.560
in twenty eleven and sentenced to twenty years. Her conviction
133
00:06:01.040 --> 00:06:04.160
was later overturned. A second trial ended in a hung jury,
134
00:06:04.360 --> 00:06:07.000
and while under house arrest, she gave birth to a son.
135
00:06:07.279 --> 00:06:10.439
But in twenty seventeen, her third trial sealed her fate,
136
00:06:10.519 --> 00:06:14.639
guilty again, this time sentenced to sixteen years. Appeals followed,
137
00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:17.800
but neither the Florida nor u s Supreme Court took
138
00:06:17.839 --> 00:06:21.000
her case. Just years later, in another state, a woman
139
00:06:21.079 --> 00:06:23.439
plotted a murder, only to find out the hitman she
140
00:06:23.600 --> 00:06:27.959
hired was actually a cop. In April twenty thirteen, twenty
141
00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:30.720
one year old Julia Murfeld sat across from a man
142
00:06:30.839 --> 00:06:33.279
she believed was a hit man, but he was actually
143
00:06:33.399 --> 00:06:36.959
an undercover cop and their entire conversation was being recorded.
144
00:06:37.279 --> 00:06:40.079
Calm and smiling, Julia detailed her plan to have her
145
00:06:40.160 --> 00:06:44.160
husband killed for a four hundred thousand dollars life insurance payout.
146
00:06:44.519 --> 00:06:47.319
Divorce felt too messy, she said this would be a
147
00:06:47.480 --> 00:06:50.240
clean getaway. Even the warning that there was no turning
148
00:06:50.360 --> 00:06:51.399
back didn't shake her.
149
00:06:51.759 --> 00:06:57.240
I sure as pole business that this cross nor Carlo's
150
00:06:57.319 --> 00:06:58.959
kind of time to a little bit about her was
151
00:06:59.000 --> 00:06:59.879
gown arm or rotch.
152
00:07:00.120 --> 00:07:05.120
Wasn't telling me all, well, that's tirely shun't be like
153
00:07:06.079 --> 00:07:07.959
on't off the fence, Like I know I want it done.
154
00:07:07.959 --> 00:07:11.319
I'm just trying to figure out there when I want
155
00:07:11.360 --> 00:07:11.639
it done.
156
00:07:12.160 --> 00:07:13.720
It has to be on a Thursday because that's the
157
00:07:13.800 --> 00:07:16.199
day that I work, But well I actually could be
158
00:07:16.199 --> 00:07:17.360
on a Thursday fighting or Saturday.
159
00:07:17.439 --> 00:07:23.639
Now, since Carlos isn't working. Harry told you how much,
160
00:07:23.720 --> 00:07:28.879
right he said, you mentioned fifty. How are you gonna are.
161
00:07:28.800 --> 00:07:29.279
We gonna work?
162
00:07:29.439 --> 00:07:31.199
That's what I was wondering because with Carlos, I was
163
00:07:31.240 --> 00:07:33.720
just gonna give him like eight or nine grand like
164
00:07:33.800 --> 00:07:37.680
every few weeks, because that way it's like under ten
165
00:07:37.800 --> 00:07:40.199
and everything and all that crap.
166
00:07:40.279 --> 00:07:42.199
So I don't know how you want to work that way.
167
00:07:42.279 --> 00:07:44.519
Well, I mean I would prefer to have something you
168
00:07:44.600 --> 00:07:48.000
know at the beginning. Well, the only that you're the
169
00:07:48.079 --> 00:07:50.079
only pattern that is, I can't.
170
00:07:50.199 --> 00:07:53.360
I don't have it until Julia had no idea that
171
00:07:53.480 --> 00:07:56.040
while she was being unfaithful, her colleague wasn't willing to
172
00:07:56.120 --> 00:07:58.879
let it happen. Instead, he went to the police, becoming
173
00:07:58.920 --> 00:08:01.920
part of a carefully planned sting operation designed to catch
174
00:08:01.959 --> 00:08:03.360
her before the plot could unfold.
175
00:08:03.879 --> 00:08:06.680
I have a girlfriend who wants to move in with me.
176
00:08:07.240 --> 00:08:08.639
And I don't want her to be scared to move
177
00:08:08.680 --> 00:08:10.519
in with me, and she thinks if she thinks that
178
00:08:10.680 --> 00:08:15.560
we got broken into and then Jacob, you know, want.
179
00:08:14.680 --> 00:08:16.600
To move So I'm kind of afraid that because I
180
00:08:16.680 --> 00:08:18.319
want her to move in with me because I don't
181
00:08:18.319 --> 00:08:19.319
want to live there by myself.
182
00:08:19.399 --> 00:08:21.839
Afterwards, well, you tell me all you want it done.
183
00:08:22.680 --> 00:08:24.639
I mean, I don't know what Carlos told me told
184
00:08:24.639 --> 00:08:27.879
you about me, but I mean I've done a couple
185
00:08:27.920 --> 00:08:30.800
of things like this before, and I mean I'll get
186
00:08:30.839 --> 00:08:32.240
it done, and I just need to know what you
187
00:08:32.320 --> 00:08:32.799
want done.
188
00:08:33.240 --> 00:08:37.279
I mean, you want me to if I could do
189
00:08:37.320 --> 00:08:39.039
it any way you want me to, but I just
190
00:08:39.120 --> 00:08:40.360
want to know how you want it done.
191
00:08:40.399 --> 00:08:42.679
They're whatever's easiest. If you can get him outside, that
192
00:08:42.720 --> 00:08:46.120
would be great. But I mean if you absolutely can't,
193
00:08:46.399 --> 00:08:47.840
I will. I'll understand, you know.
194
00:08:48.440 --> 00:08:50.759
So you want me to, like to, I guess, I
195
00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:53.960
guess I don't. I'm not understanding, so you don't. You
196
00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:56.120
don't want it done in the house though, because it
197
00:08:56.440 --> 00:08:57.679
would be messy in the house.
198
00:08:58.080 --> 00:09:00.080
Her reason for not wanting the murder to happen and
199
00:09:00.279 --> 00:09:02.759
inside the house was as bizarre as it was chilling.
200
00:09:02.960 --> 00:09:04.919
And deeply unsettling to say the least.
201
00:09:05.320 --> 00:09:07.080
Do you have any cash laying around then you can
202
00:09:07.679 --> 00:09:09.279
kind of give you like a little dot pay in
203
00:09:09.320 --> 00:09:09.639
the mind.
204
00:09:09.879 --> 00:09:11.440
Yeah, I can give you.
205
00:09:13.000 --> 00:09:15.679
I can give or whatever you got there you something
206
00:09:15.720 --> 00:09:17.879
to show me that you're serious about this. Bring there
207
00:09:17.919 --> 00:09:18.440
with you tomorrow.
208
00:09:18.480 --> 00:09:18.720
Okay?
209
00:09:18.799 --> 00:09:22.840
Tending though? Can it be either not this week?
210
00:09:22.879 --> 00:09:25.320
Can it be a week or two from now to
211
00:09:25.399 --> 00:09:27.759
as that surprises me with how you do it, because
212
00:09:27.840 --> 00:09:28.919
I mean, they're more shot.
213
00:09:28.720 --> 00:09:29.600
Down on when it happens.
214
00:09:30.600 --> 00:09:31.559
You don't want them to suffer.
215
00:09:31.639 --> 00:09:34.759
So I'll make it clean perfect, Okay, I'll make it
216
00:09:34.840 --> 00:09:37.519
quick and clean, and I'll just take those things to
217
00:09:37.600 --> 00:09:39.240
put on the list, and it's gonna be quick in
218
00:09:39.320 --> 00:09:39.639
and out.
219
00:09:39.759 --> 00:09:42.559
You know. I'll get the feedback to you later, which I.
220
00:09:42.639 --> 00:09:45.240
Just want to make it as as non suspicious as.
221
00:09:45.240 --> 00:09:48.720
You anticipate getting your insurance policy.
222
00:09:49.360 --> 00:09:51.399
I don't know from one of my one of my
223
00:09:51.440 --> 00:09:55.639
buddies told me that his guy friend his girlfriend was
224
00:09:55.679 --> 00:09:58.759
his insurance beneficiary and the guy was murdered, and she
225
00:09:58.879 --> 00:10:01.039
got it relatively clearly.
226
00:10:01.039 --> 00:10:02.440
He didn't give me a time thing, but she got
227
00:10:02.480 --> 00:10:02.879
it quickly.
228
00:10:05.639 --> 00:10:09.919
It shouldn't be I shouldn't be out than that you're
229
00:10:09.919 --> 00:10:11.519
gonna bring tomorrow, Yes, I want.
230
00:10:11.440 --> 00:10:14.720
You're gonna bring. I'm going to bring house plan not
231
00:10:14.960 --> 00:10:16.639
to get up to the room where he's gonna hang out,
232
00:10:16.639 --> 00:10:18.399
a picture of him, a list of the things you
233
00:10:18.440 --> 00:10:23.200
want take in, and a document. Good, thank you very much.
234
00:10:23.320 --> 00:10:27.120
Tomorrow four o'clock you go, my remember.
235
00:10:28.399 --> 00:10:31.360
The very next day, she returned with everything the undercover
236
00:10:31.480 --> 00:10:35.879
officer had asked for, making her deadly intentions unmistakably clear.
237
00:10:37.960 --> 00:10:38.240
Tell me.
238
00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:43.559
Your girl go up for me. I'm very good time.
239
00:10:43.720 --> 00:10:46.320
But that's the out of the house. And this is
240
00:10:46.399 --> 00:10:49.159
the street view, like where you're gonna park on the street.
241
00:10:52.679 --> 00:10:55.679
There's no street, that's just the land. Okay, So the streets.
242
00:10:55.279 --> 00:10:58.120
Here, and then the land's here, and then the fun
243
00:10:58.200 --> 00:11:00.480
door's here. This is the person that the door. That's
244
00:11:00.480 --> 00:11:02.840
the one we always use, and that's the key works
245
00:11:02.879 --> 00:11:05.240
to either door though, but this has gotten in closed port.
246
00:11:05.279 --> 00:11:06.480
You gotta go through the front door.
247
00:11:06.799 --> 00:11:08.639
Then you gotta go through the schools right into the house.
248
00:11:09.879 --> 00:11:10.000
Uh.
249
00:11:10.720 --> 00:11:12.360
That's projections to get to the house.
250
00:11:12.559 --> 00:11:16.159
Okay, did you bring the money? All right?
251
00:11:16.600 --> 00:11:19.840
Okay, just so you know, jac once I leave here
252
00:11:19.879 --> 00:11:23.559
to day it's on. Okay, so there's no car on
253
00:11:23.600 --> 00:11:25.799
and off. Once I leave from here, I'm playing and
254
00:11:25.840 --> 00:11:28.440
I'm doing it. You're gonna pay out, Okay, got it?
255
00:11:28.840 --> 00:11:29.039
Yeah?
256
00:11:29.240 --> 00:11:29.480
Okay?
257
00:11:29.559 --> 00:11:31.759
You said you want something about our gunshots? Is that
258
00:11:31.879 --> 00:11:32.679
how you want me to do it?
259
00:11:32.759 --> 00:11:35.000
You want me to shoot them unless unless you can
260
00:11:35.039 --> 00:11:35.799
do it painlessly?
261
00:11:35.960 --> 00:11:38.879
You're not breaking as that that would well, you know,
262
00:11:38.960 --> 00:11:41.519
I would prefer to use either a knife or that.
263
00:11:41.759 --> 00:11:43.360
It's quick and easy to know how.
264
00:11:43.360 --> 00:11:45.120
To say it was painless, best painless?
265
00:11:45.679 --> 00:11:46.840
Where do you want me to shoot them? Do you
266
00:11:46.879 --> 00:11:48.840
want an open casket, a close casket?
267
00:11:48.879 --> 00:11:49.320
What do you want?
268
00:11:49.360 --> 00:11:50.639
I don't have an open casket.
269
00:11:50.679 --> 00:11:53.200
I mean the most painless way you can possibly do it.
270
00:11:53.399 --> 00:11:55.879
I don't really, I don't care about anything else.
271
00:11:55.919 --> 00:11:56.639
Just make it painless.
272
00:11:57.279 --> 00:11:58.960
I'm gonna I'm just gonna take your head on there
273
00:11:59.000 --> 00:12:03.039
and I'm gonna shoot them, right. I mean, you've trapped
274
00:12:03.080 --> 00:12:06.399
this out obviously. Like I said, once I leave here today,
275
00:12:06.519 --> 00:12:09.120
it's a done deal. It's getting done. Whether you I'll
276
00:12:09.159 --> 00:12:11.080
be later bag out or not. I'm doing it after
277
00:12:11.159 --> 00:12:11.440
to day.
278
00:12:12.600 --> 00:12:15.960
You'll get the call on Julia Charlene Meherfeld was later arrested.
279
00:12:16.200 --> 00:12:18.399
And sentenced to up to twenty years in prison for
280
00:12:18.559 --> 00:12:22.120
plotting her husband's murder. Judge William Marrietti ordered she serve
281
00:12:22.200 --> 00:12:24.919
at least five years and eight months before parole. A
282
00:12:25.080 --> 00:12:28.279
decade later, in a completely different setting, a murder plot
283
00:12:28.399 --> 00:12:30.960
was already in motion until a routine stop over a
284
00:12:31.000 --> 00:12:35.200
broken headlight blew the whole thing wide open. On September eighteenth,
285
00:12:35.480 --> 00:12:38.840
twenty twenty three, a routine traffic stop in South Florida
286
00:12:39.120 --> 00:12:42.039
quickly turned unsettling. A team pulled over for a broken
287
00:12:42.120 --> 00:12:45.879
headlight made a chilling, unexpected confession, and what officers discovered
288
00:12:45.960 --> 00:12:47.879
next made things even more disturbing.
289
00:12:51.919 --> 00:12:58.960
Come on over here, So yeah, that's compluely out. Yeah.
290
00:12:59.360 --> 00:13:01.159
So it's a quick fix out o' rallies one like
291
00:13:01.279 --> 00:13:03.919
maybe sis books, special bread truck quick fixing.
292
00:13:04.200 --> 00:13:06.000
I've heard you can use like a wrench thing to
293
00:13:06.679 --> 00:13:08.159
hold out hol On out.
294
00:13:08.480 --> 00:13:12.039
Right after that, officers requested to search the vehicle. Horton
295
00:13:12.159 --> 00:13:16.159
hesitated visibly uneasy, and that hesitation wasn't without reason.
296
00:13:16.759 --> 00:13:20.919
Like I was saying, Carol, the car, what's something weeks
297
00:13:20.919 --> 00:13:23.399
scope and for someone there? Now, can you carefully search
298
00:13:23.440 --> 00:13:24.039
to make sure of that?
299
00:13:25.240 --> 00:13:25.440
Sure?
300
00:13:26.799 --> 00:13:27.000
Yeah?
301
00:13:27.120 --> 00:13:31.559
Yeah, let's se yes or no, I'm into like in
302
00:13:31.639 --> 00:13:32.759
Sematural podcast.
303
00:13:33.279 --> 00:13:37.080
Despite Horton's hesitation, officers proceeded with the vehicle search, and
304
00:13:37.399 --> 00:13:41.879
what they found raised serious red flags. Alongside a gun
305
00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:44.840
and a knife, there were notepads filled with disturbing handwritten
306
00:13:44.919 --> 00:13:47.600
messages hinting at something far more calculated.
307
00:13:47.799 --> 00:13:49.559
We're sure check box requick, make sure you've gotten on
308
00:13:49.600 --> 00:13:50.440
a charge over back.
309
00:13:50.879 --> 00:13:51.480
That's just my calls.
310
00:13:51.480 --> 00:13:52.799
So just keep your hays on your back while we're
311
00:13:52.799 --> 00:13:53.000
doing this.
312
00:13:53.080 --> 00:13:57.840
Okay, it needs to do. No, you're attained, You're not.
313
00:13:57.879 --> 00:13:58.080
You're not.
314
00:13:58.240 --> 00:13:59.440
This doesn't mean you're going to Chata.
315
00:13:59.519 --> 00:14:01.879
Well, Horton sat detained in the back of the police car.
316
00:14:02.159 --> 00:14:07.720
Officers uncovered marijuana, along with other unsettling evidence that deepened
317
00:14:07.799 --> 00:14:08.320
their concern.
318
00:14:08.519 --> 00:14:10.799
Just speaking of my partner, as I was searching a
319
00:14:10.840 --> 00:14:12.679
car and stuff, so I found the bomb. It's like
320
00:14:12.720 --> 00:14:14.600
I said, I feature you being super honest with That's
321
00:14:14.639 --> 00:14:16.480
all it is. I mean just some water and stuff
322
00:14:16.480 --> 00:14:19.919
like that. It's not so as Also that my partner
323
00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:20.440
was before me.
324
00:14:20.559 --> 00:14:22.720
I had some thoughts about some stuff going on down
325
00:14:22.759 --> 00:14:23.480
in Miami.
326
00:14:23.320 --> 00:14:24.080
So what's up with that?
327
00:14:27.120 --> 00:14:30.120
Just I want to drag down to Miami for one
328
00:14:30.320 --> 00:14:33.679
age road trip too, to go to a church to
329
00:14:33.799 --> 00:14:35.440
plan for later plants later.
330
00:14:35.519 --> 00:14:38.720
What'd you got planned later? A tag layer? Tack layer?
331
00:14:39.080 --> 00:14:39.399
What's that?
332
00:14:39.960 --> 00:14:40.240
All right?
333
00:14:40.279 --> 00:14:44.320
It's an attack? Oh? Attack?
334
00:14:44.519 --> 00:14:44.720
Yeah?
335
00:14:44.799 --> 00:14:47.759
Oh a tech I heard tackler? Or what kind of attack?
336
00:14:48.600 --> 00:14:51.639
Like either shooting or stampings?
337
00:14:52.799 --> 00:14:53.080
Okay?
338
00:14:53.360 --> 00:14:55.159
Have you been having the saws recently? Yes?
339
00:14:55.639 --> 00:14:55.919
A lot?
340
00:14:56.120 --> 00:14:58.039
Or just severy now and then a lot?
341
00:14:58.159 --> 00:15:00.960
Okay have you been Have you tried to some kind
342
00:15:01.000 --> 00:15:02.639
of professional about this kind of stuff?
343
00:15:02.679 --> 00:15:02.799
Or no?
344
00:15:03.200 --> 00:15:05.080
I tried to get if I tried to get to
345
00:15:05.159 --> 00:15:06.279
a therapist.
346
00:15:05.960 --> 00:15:08.799
But that it was like a laitlist or something. Oh okay,
347
00:15:09.120 --> 00:15:11.600
all right, Dan, So you were going down to Miami,
348
00:15:11.720 --> 00:15:13.600
go to go first hangout and you would go to
349
00:15:13.639 --> 00:15:14.919
a church. What's what was the church for?
350
00:15:16.399 --> 00:15:16.639
Church?
351
00:15:16.799 --> 00:15:20.480
Was location of my later attack? Closely?
352
00:15:20.759 --> 00:15:20.960
Yeah?
353
00:15:21.639 --> 00:15:24.360
It was for your later attack? Yes, okay, what was
354
00:15:24.759 --> 00:15:27.279
up with the What was your other location for a tech.
355
00:15:28.679 --> 00:15:29.120
High school?
356
00:15:29.519 --> 00:15:34.799
Yeah? And Okachobe up north Okachobe? What's a What's particular
357
00:15:34.840 --> 00:15:38.600
about Okachobe is that it's a small town up north
358
00:15:38.639 --> 00:15:41.360
the lake mm hmm. Yeah, and I'm familiar with that area.
359
00:15:41.360 --> 00:15:43.600
It's a nice area. Yeah, what's up? But what brings
360
00:15:43.639 --> 00:15:47.080
you to that area of the high school? Some issue
361
00:15:47.080 --> 00:15:51.320
that had with an administrator? Okay, it's still in school already.
362
00:15:51.440 --> 00:15:52.320
So with those issues, you.
363
00:15:52.399 --> 00:15:54.559
Wanted to just basically go over there and attack them
364
00:15:55.000 --> 00:15:57.240
or have an attack plan? What were you specifically wanted
365
00:15:57.240 --> 00:16:01.039
to do? I wanted to shoot. I'm want to shoot
366
00:16:01.159 --> 00:16:02.679
untill like fifteen people?
367
00:16:02.919 --> 00:16:03.519
Fifteen people?
368
00:16:03.679 --> 00:16:04.240
Why fifteen?
369
00:16:05.879 --> 00:16:06.279
Actually?
370
00:16:06.799 --> 00:16:10.399
Yeah, fifteen because there was an odd number. Do you
371
00:16:10.519 --> 00:16:11.120
like odd numbers?
372
00:16:11.279 --> 00:16:11.480
Yeah?
373
00:16:11.799 --> 00:16:12.360
God numbers.
374
00:16:12.639 --> 00:16:15.519
What began as a routine traffic stop turned into a
375
00:16:15.639 --> 00:16:19.600
possible life saving intervention. At just nineteen, Horton appeared not
376
00:16:19.679 --> 00:16:22.519
only dangerous but clearly in need of urgent mental health care.
377
00:16:22.799 --> 00:16:24.039
I don't need you to tell me what you think.
378
00:16:24.080 --> 00:16:24.600
I need to hear.
379
00:16:25.159 --> 00:16:28.039
I don't need you to tell me what you think
380
00:16:28.320 --> 00:16:30.360
I have to be told so you can get away
381
00:16:30.559 --> 00:16:32.840
or get out or if you're leaving here regardless. I'm
382
00:16:32.840 --> 00:16:35.600
not trying to bake correct you anymore. But I need
383
00:16:35.679 --> 00:16:37.039
to know what's going on with you because I can't
384
00:16:37.039 --> 00:16:38.080
help you if you're.
385
00:16:37.960 --> 00:16:40.919
Not honest to open up to me. Does that make sense?
386
00:16:41.159 --> 00:16:41.360
Yes?
387
00:16:41.960 --> 00:16:44.399
So what's what is the deal? Do you do you
388
00:16:44.480 --> 00:16:48.600
still want to hurt people? Do you want to carry
389
00:16:48.639 --> 00:16:51.279
out it is in the future you think about it later?
390
00:16:51.600 --> 00:16:51.759
Is it?
391
00:16:53.000 --> 00:16:53.039
Is?
392
00:16:53.120 --> 00:16:53.159
It?
393
00:16:53.360 --> 00:16:55.039
Is it something We're going to turn on the news
394
00:16:55.120 --> 00:16:57.279
one morning or one evening and we're gonna see Henry
395
00:16:58.000 --> 00:16:59.720
on the news for doing that.
396
00:17:01.279 --> 00:17:04.559
Now, now, I'm gonna be honest with you.
397
00:17:04.680 --> 00:17:07.759
Man, you said no, but you you you got it.
398
00:17:07.960 --> 00:17:10.000
See you got You're on your.
399
00:17:09.960 --> 00:17:13.599
Face right and you're like, uh right, and be honest.
400
00:17:13.839 --> 00:17:14.880
No, is the answer that you.
401
00:17:14.920 --> 00:17:18.880
Think I want to hear? Right? What's the truth? Where
402
00:17:18.960 --> 00:17:21.079
where we're being honest with you? And like I said,
403
00:17:21.119 --> 00:17:22.039
we just want to know the truth.
404
00:17:22.160 --> 00:17:27.440
You can't be arrested for thoughts and dreams and stuff
405
00:17:27.559 --> 00:17:29.119
like that, right, So we're just trying.
406
00:17:28.920 --> 00:17:32.279
To gauge where you're at right now in that is
407
00:17:32.640 --> 00:17:35.839
Would it be fair to say that once you once
408
00:17:35.839 --> 00:17:38.200
you get off the meds, you're gonna go back to
409
00:17:38.200 --> 00:17:39.640
playing that and I'm probably gonna see you one the
410
00:17:39.680 --> 00:17:41.200
news probably.
411
00:17:41.880 --> 00:17:45.200
Horton ultimately pleaded guilty to two counts of making written
412
00:17:45.240 --> 00:17:48.119
threats to kill or cause harm, along with one count
413
00:17:48.119 --> 00:17:51.359
of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was sentenced to three
414
00:17:51.720 --> 00:17:54.880
years in prison The next case was far more intense
415
00:17:55.079 --> 00:17:58.599
and dangerously close to turning fatal. Officers rushed into a
416
00:17:58.680 --> 00:18:01.519
chaotic scene, stepping in just in time to save a
417
00:18:01.559 --> 00:18:05.200
young woman from a brutal stabbing. On November sixth, twenty
418
00:18:05.359 --> 00:18:09.519
twenty two, in Baltimore, a disturbing scene unfolded when Tyree Morehead,
419
00:18:09.640 --> 00:18:13.200
an activist known for painting no shoot zones across the city,
420
00:18:13.400 --> 00:18:15.599
was found straddling the woman with a butcher knife. He
421
00:18:15.720 --> 00:18:19.279
was given multiple commands from officer Zachary Rutherford to drop
422
00:18:19.359 --> 00:18:22.920
his knife, but they were ignored. What happened next changed everything.
423
00:18:23.039 --> 00:18:29.839
Say us good ouse, good down, good down.
424
00:18:36.960 --> 00:18:40.119
In moments like this, there's no time to hesitate. Officers
425
00:18:40.240 --> 00:18:43.119
act in split seconds to save lives. With a knife
426
00:18:43.119 --> 00:18:45.799
at her head, the woman's life hung in the balance,
427
00:18:46.039 --> 00:18:47.839
and the response had to be immediate.
428
00:18:48.000 --> 00:18:48.359
Shots.
429
00:18:48.400 --> 00:18:49.599
What shots? Why?
430
00:18:49.960 --> 00:18:53.079
Don't move? Don't move, ma'am you okay.
431
00:18:53.400 --> 00:18:55.519
Let's take a look at the shooting from another angle.
432
00:18:56.200 --> 00:18:59.480
Good douce, good down, good do good doo.
433
00:19:08.720 --> 00:19:12.039
No charges have been filed against officer Zachary Rutherford. The
434
00:19:12.160 --> 00:19:15.440
case is under routine internal review, but officials say the
435
00:19:15.519 --> 00:19:18.440
shooting was justified given the clear and immediate threat to
436
00:19:18.480 --> 00:19:21.440
the woman's life. In a similar turn of events, officers
437
00:19:21.599 --> 00:19:24.839
saved another life, this time in California, stepping in just
438
00:19:25.039 --> 00:19:29.519
moments before tragedy could unfold. On April tenth, twenty twenty five,
439
00:19:29.880 --> 00:19:33.279
in Fresno, California, a disturbing scene unfolded at the Manchester
440
00:19:33.400 --> 00:19:36.440
Transit Center when officers responded to reports of a woman
441
00:19:36.640 --> 00:19:39.519
armed with a knife. The suspect, thirty nine year old
442
00:19:39.599 --> 00:19:43.400
Joanna Lopez, confronted a sixty eight year old bystander just
443
00:19:43.680 --> 00:19:46.599
stepping off a bus. What followed was a tense, high
444
00:19:46.640 --> 00:19:49.039
stakes standoff. No one saw comings.
445
00:19:53.079 --> 00:19:58.000
I at yourself, is nab ornackey to get a throw in?
446
00:19:58.119 --> 00:20:34.440
Fact? Can find out which is that? What's yet?
447
00:20:40.000 --> 00:20:42.480
This wasn't a routine call. A woman held a knife
448
00:20:42.519 --> 00:20:45.440
to an old lady's neck in broad daylight. Officers had
449
00:20:45.480 --> 00:20:48.279
one clear choice to act fast and save the victim.
450
00:20:48.799 --> 00:20:50.799
No matter what, what are you?
451
00:20:53.599 --> 00:20:54.319
What is she worrying?
452
00:21:00.960 --> 00:21:02.400
Hey? Everybody move out the way?
453
00:21:03.680 --> 00:21:04.720
Everybody move out the way?
454
00:21:05.799 --> 00:21:10.839
Hey put the knife down? Yeah the way? Yeah the way.
455
00:21:10.960 --> 00:21:14.519
Hey put the knife out. Wife said to hey, put
456
00:21:14.559 --> 00:21:15.119
the knife out.
457
00:21:15.920 --> 00:21:16.400
I guess up.
458
00:21:16.480 --> 00:21:21.559
Put the knife down, out, put the knife down. Don't know, hey,
459
00:21:22.079 --> 00:21:25.079
get down, put the knife down.
460
00:21:30.680 --> 00:21:31.599
Frank with you. Ois.
461
00:21:34.920 --> 00:21:38.559
Joanna Lopez later died at the hospital. No civilians were injured.
462
00:21:38.799 --> 00:21:41.599
The case remains under review, but police say the officer
463
00:21:41.680 --> 00:21:44.559
made a split second decision to stop a deadly threat
464
00:21:44.799 --> 00:21:47.799
and protect an innocent life. While officers managed to save
465
00:21:47.880 --> 00:21:50.640
Joanna Lopez just in time, the next case took a
466
00:21:50.720 --> 00:21:53.680
darker turn. The victim was already gravely injured by the
467
00:21:53.720 --> 00:21:57.880
time help arrived. On May eleventh, twenty twenty three, in
468
00:21:57.960 --> 00:22:02.200
Fairfield Township, Ohio, neighbor called nine one one after finding
469
00:22:02.279 --> 00:22:05.519
fifty year old Brenda Scott badly burned and injured beneath
470
00:22:05.559 --> 00:22:08.240
the second story window. At first, it looked like a
471
00:22:08.319 --> 00:22:11.200
tragic fall, but when Brenda spoke, it quickly became clear
472
00:22:11.400 --> 00:22:12.200
this was no accident.
473
00:22:12.359 --> 00:22:14.400
In nine on one, what is the address of the emergency?
474
00:22:14.799 --> 00:22:18.039
My neighbor behind my house laying out and looks like
475
00:22:18.160 --> 00:22:19.079
you caught on fire.
476
00:22:19.680 --> 00:22:21.519
Okay, can you wata real quick?
477
00:22:21.799 --> 00:22:22.599
See if she can get.
478
00:22:22.519 --> 00:22:23.039
Her to wake up.
479
00:22:23.599 --> 00:22:25.839
She's the way she's talking to me. I can get
480
00:22:26.000 --> 00:22:27.000
fence open to get over it.
481
00:22:27.319 --> 00:22:28.559
She's she's hurt bad.
482
00:22:29.039 --> 00:22:30.279
Ask her she knows what happened?
483
00:22:31.119 --> 00:22:31.759
What happened?
484
00:22:33.559 --> 00:22:37.960
So much ceter? He should set her on fire, your son.
485
00:22:38.640 --> 00:22:41.240
Despite her critical burns, the woman told a neighbor who
486
00:22:41.279 --> 00:22:43.960
did it, her voice clear on the nine one one call.
487
00:22:44.359 --> 00:22:47.160
That crucial detail helped officers quickly zero in on the
488
00:22:47.200 --> 00:22:49.079
suspect as they rescued the victim.
489
00:22:49.359 --> 00:22:52.839
Can you ask her son, Jane, if he has any weapons?
490
00:22:53.640 --> 00:22:53.880
Does it?
491
00:22:53.960 --> 00:22:55.000
Do you know you any weapons?
492
00:22:55.960 --> 00:22:56.160
Yes?
493
00:22:58.720 --> 00:23:01.839
Water, we gasoline, threw it on her, you said, with
494
00:23:01.960 --> 00:23:09.400
your boyfriend, her boyfriend's son, Yes, he said.
495
00:23:09.480 --> 00:23:10.000
She Please her.
496
00:23:10.119 --> 00:23:11.400
He's got asthma. She can't breathe.
497
00:23:12.599 --> 00:23:15.599
Do you see any barns on her? I do her.
498
00:23:15.839 --> 00:23:20.599
Her skin is completely covered, burns back everywhere. There's actually
499
00:23:20.640 --> 00:23:23.160
smoke coming out of the helm on the top floor.
500
00:23:24.519 --> 00:23:26.359
He said, the house on fire. The house on fire too,
501
00:23:26.960 --> 00:23:31.119
Oh my god, Oh my gosh. And her skin is
502
00:23:31.440 --> 00:23:31.839
off of her.
503
00:23:32.000 --> 00:23:35.519
This before I've got the female on the back, severe burns. Control,
504
00:23:35.720 --> 00:23:36.640
give me an off channel.
505
00:23:40.599 --> 00:23:43.640
He had stopped four back here on.
506
00:23:43.720 --> 00:23:54.640
The ground, severely burned. Sure, honey, stay with me.
507
00:23:54.680 --> 00:23:55.200
I'm officer.
508
00:23:55.240 --> 00:23:57.559
Step and just stay with me. Okay, I got the
509
00:23:57.640 --> 00:23:58.720
matics are coming to get.
510
00:23:58.559 --> 00:23:58.960
You right now.
511
00:23:59.000 --> 00:24:03.680
Cutting to breathe. Huh, I done pay health, I can't breath.
512
00:24:04.200 --> 00:24:06.640
Moments later, a man walked out of the house, but
513
00:24:06.759 --> 00:24:09.400
thanks to what Brenda had already told a neighbor, officers
514
00:24:09.440 --> 00:24:10.960
knew exactly who he was.
515
00:24:11.640 --> 00:24:12.400
Come to me now.
516
00:24:13.880 --> 00:24:17.720
Off, Okay, I don't know what happened. Just just went off, bro.
517
00:24:18.039 --> 00:24:21.279
I try to try to stop so I find out
518
00:24:21.279 --> 00:24:24.359
what's going on. All right, So what happens is ever
519
00:24:24.440 --> 00:24:29.400
buy us in the house? Who step mother? Your stepmother
520
00:24:29.480 --> 00:24:37.400
jumped out the back. Yes, what's your name? Robbie? Okay?
521
00:24:41.440 --> 00:24:42.799
Six before I got the suspect.
522
00:24:43.279 --> 00:24:43.920
Hey, custody.
523
00:24:44.599 --> 00:24:47.079
She's in the very back because you got somebody. Yeah,
524
00:24:47.119 --> 00:24:47.519
it's bad.
525
00:24:52.759 --> 00:24:53.759
Was two tight on your Robbie?
526
00:24:53.880 --> 00:24:54.400
No good?
527
00:24:56.640 --> 00:24:58.359
She says, she needs her a hailo out of the house.
528
00:24:58.640 --> 00:25:01.960
She's burned bad. Do you need any medical treatment? I
529
00:25:02.079 --> 00:25:02.839
kind of breathing.
530
00:25:02.880 --> 00:25:05.599
Okay, it was.
531
00:25:05.720 --> 00:25:07.000
I got a whole hat mess right now.
532
00:25:07.920 --> 00:25:10.440
So here's what's gonna happen. What set you back in
533
00:25:10.440 --> 00:25:11.680
your Roomaine for a minute.
534
00:25:11.720 --> 00:25:18.000
Okay, I got some other guys coming. I'll hear that
535
00:25:18.079 --> 00:25:22.160
hack in a minute. I was set back there for you.
536
00:25:22.200 --> 00:25:23.440
Sure those aren't too tight you okay?
537
00:25:24.279 --> 00:25:25.319
All right, I got a lot going on.
538
00:25:25.400 --> 00:25:28.279
Give me a minute, say anything about what happened.
539
00:25:28.759 --> 00:25:32.680
No, she was a lace T was a domestic.
540
00:25:33.839 --> 00:25:37.200
You're saying that he wore gas on her liver.
541
00:25:39.519 --> 00:25:42.279
There were clear signs Brenda had been brutally assaulted before
542
00:25:42.359 --> 00:25:46.799
being thrown out. Her teeth were shattered, her body battered. Yet,
543
00:25:46.839 --> 00:25:50.480
despite the pain, she bravely answered every question she could.
544
00:25:51.400 --> 00:25:57.039
I guess I'm gonna go with yes, Okay, were you guys?
545
00:25:57.599 --> 00:26:00.160
Did he set you on fire? What we got was
546
00:26:00.240 --> 00:26:01.039
arguing about.
547
00:26:03.359 --> 00:26:03.960
What happened.
548
00:26:07.920 --> 00:26:11.599
Despite the quick response and every effort made, officers were
549
00:26:11.680 --> 00:26:15.000
unable to save Brenda. On June ninth, twenty twenty three,
550
00:26:15.200 --> 00:26:18.200
after twenty nine agonizing days in the hospital, she succumbed
551
00:26:18.240 --> 00:26:21.400
to her injuries, turning the brutal assault into a homicide.
