Hey everyone,
It's your host from "Discovering Grayslake," coming to you from my new office in Commerce Plaza! It feels great to be settled in, and I'm so excited to share this week's conversation with you.
I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with a true Grayslake cornerstone, David Raye. His story is one of those that reminds you just how much heart and dedication one person can pour into a community. We talked about everything from his journey from New Jersey to our hometown, to the incredible work he's done for kids both here and around the world.
This episode is packed with inspiration, but here are a few things that really stuck with me:
* **From Software to Significance:** Can you imagine leaving a 20-year corporate career to start something completely new? David did just that. He shared how a program called "Success to Significance" helped him pivot from the software world to opening one of the first Goddard Schools in Illinois, right here in Grayslake. It's a powerful reminder that it's never too late to find more meaningful work.
* **The Ripple Effect of a "Yes":** David's community involvement started with a simple invitation to a dinner dance for SEDOL (the Special Education District of Lake County). That one "yes" led to years of service on their board and involvement with so many other amazing groups like the Exchange Club and Bernie's Book Bank. It really makes you think about the power of showing up.
* **Grayslake's Heart Goes Global:** I was fascinated to learn how David's work extends all the way to Chennai, India. He's been instrumental in helping establish schools for children in slums, giving them a chance to break the cycle of poverty. It's incredible to know that the spirit of our community is making a difference thousands of miles away.
* **A Little Hometown Charm:** We also had some fun, of course! I asked David about his first car (a $200 Plymouth Duster!), his favorite Grayslake event (Summer Days, naturally), and the first concert he ever saw (Elton John dressed as the Statue of Liberty!). It's these little stories that truly connect us.
David's story is a testament to what makes Grayslake so special—it's a place where people genuinely care and work to make a difference. If you're looking for a dose of inspiration or want to learn how you can get more involved locally, you won't want to miss this conversation.
Grab a coffee, take a listen, and let's all get inspired to do a few random acts of kindness today.
Talk to you soon,
Your Host, Discovering Grayslake
