00:00:00.458 --> 00:00:05.964
Have you ever read through the Bible and asked yourself, wouldn't it be great to have a picture of this event?
00:00:05.964 --> 00:00:09.676
Well, of course, cameras were not invented until well after the events of the Bible.
00:00:09.676 --> 00:00:15.724
But interestingly, that does not mean that we don't have some pictures of some biblical events.
00:00:15.724 --> 00:00:21.896
And that's what we're going to talk about on today's episode of Digging Deeper.
00:00:29.446 --> 00:00:41.832
Welcome to Digging Deeper, the podcast where we talk about the geography, archeology, people and cultures of the lands of the Bible by exploring those areas, we hope to broaden your understanding of the biblical narrative.
00:00:41.832 --> 00:00:48.465

00:00:54.637 --> 00:00:59.350
We'll be more than happy to tell you a little bit more about them a little later in our show.
00:00:59.350 --> 00:01:00.601
So Dan. Welcome.
00:01:00.601 --> 00:01:01.226
Well thank you.
00:01:01.226 --> 00:01:03.313
Good to see you too. Okay.
00:01:03.313 --> 00:01:06.231
So we want to talk about these pictures that have been taken.
00:01:06.231 --> 00:01:07.691
So set the stage for us.
00:01:07.691 --> 00:01:12.739
give us kind of an area of the Bible that we need to look to about where we're going to have these pictures made.
00:01:13.114 --> 00:01:16.492
Well, if you think about the United Kingdom, some king.
00:01:16.534 --> 00:01:16.992
Yeah.
00:01:16.992 --> 00:01:22.748
And then right after that, kingdoms are divided into the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern Kingdom of Judah.
00:01:22.748 --> 00:01:22.873
Right.
00:01:22.873 --> 00:01:25.626
neither of these nations, was always doing what was right.
00:01:25.626 --> 00:01:26.293
Right.
00:01:26.293 --> 00:01:26.710
The god.
00:01:26.710 --> 00:01:28.087
Yeah. The northern one.
00:01:28.087 --> 00:01:29.798
A lot less than the southern.
00:01:30.757 --> 00:01:35.677
But despite the prophets being sent by God and all the warnings, they didn't change.
00:01:35.677 --> 00:01:42.852
And so God started sending nations to teach them a lesson because he told them, if you don't obey these bad things are going to happen pretty soon.
00:01:42.852 --> 00:01:50.692
722 BC The Assyrians conquered Samaria and the northern kingdom was like, okay, Syrians aren't done.
00:01:50.692 --> 00:01:52.361
They're wanting to conquer everybody.
00:01:52.361 --> 00:01:54.697
They had their eyes on their southern kingdom of Judah.
00:01:54.697 --> 00:01:58.992
So they come down and they start capturing a number of cities of Judah.
00:01:59.661 --> 00:02:04.581
And they came to one of the final strongholds that was left the city of Lachish.
00:02:04.581 --> 00:02:05.207
Okay.
00:02:05.207 --> 00:02:10.546
So, so describe to me where where Lachish is in the in the land of Israel.
00:02:10.546 --> 00:02:13.091
If you're looking at a map, where would you look? Okay.
00:02:13.091 --> 00:02:28.939
If you look at the southern portion of the modern country where you think about the you have the Mediterranean in, and then you go a little bit east, that would have been the sheep fallow which are these lowland kind of little hills with a lot of important valleys.
00:02:28.939 --> 00:02:30.150
Okay. Right.
00:02:30.150 --> 00:02:30.525
Okay.
00:02:30.525 --> 00:02:34.528
So Lachish was located down in this Shaler, like you said. Yes.
00:02:34.528 --> 00:02:35.905
On the southern end.
00:02:35.905 --> 00:02:38.866
It was very important because anybody coming up from the south.
00:02:39.199 --> 00:02:40.534
That's right at your rear door.
00:02:40.534 --> 00:02:43.538
Okay. Big important city to protect.
00:02:43.538 --> 00:02:44.913
And that's what Lachish was doing.
00:02:44.913 --> 00:02:47.792
Okay. Well, you mentioned the Assyrians coming down, did they did.
00:02:47.792 --> 00:02:48.751
Conquered as well.
00:02:48.751 --> 00:02:51.461
You can visit Lachish today, Yeah. Yeah.
00:02:51.461 --> 00:02:52.838
There's there's a wonderful tel there.
00:02:52.838 --> 00:02:54.257
And since.
00:02:54.257 --> 00:02:55.758
Yeah. Okay.
00:02:55.758 --> 00:02:58.635
How about I toss up? Okay.
00:02:58.635 --> 00:03:00.013
Let you to tell us.
00:03:00.013 --> 00:03:02.098
What is it? Well. Okay.
00:03:02.098 --> 00:03:03.307
That's a that's actually a good question.
00:03:03.307 --> 00:03:06.561
A tel is a an artificial mound basically.
00:03:06.811 --> 00:03:15.903
It it happens when, a people come into a region and they build a city, they find a place to get water, and they'd say, this is a place to build, a town.
00:03:15.903 --> 00:03:16.695
And they do.
00:03:16.695 --> 00:03:21.283
And then for one reason or another, either they're captured or they vacate the area or something.
00:03:21.283 --> 00:03:28.750
The town is, deserted and, given time, dust kind of comes in and fills in the, you know, covers up the what was left.
00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:34.254
then 100 years later, another people come in and they build a city there, and they build on top of this.
00:03:34.254 --> 00:03:40.052
And so a tail is an artificial mound of all of these layers of civilizations throughout, throughout history.
00:03:40.302 --> 00:03:43.639
And so there is a wonderful tale at Lachish.
00:03:43.639 --> 00:03:46.935
It's been, worked on a number of times by archeologists.
00:03:47.268 --> 00:04:01.532
And when you approach that, that site, as soon as you get off the bus, you're struck by this, not only the size of the tail, but there seems to be an extra appendage or something off the off the southern end of it.
00:04:01.657 --> 00:04:13.169
what you realize is that and learn from not only the signage there, but, in, in study is that that's actually the what's left over of a siege by the Assyrians that you just mentioned.
00:04:13.169 --> 00:04:21.386
When the Assyrians attacked Lachish, they built this siege ramp so that they could then attack the city and, of course, gain access to the city.
00:04:21.718 --> 00:04:25.973
And it's a wonderful thing to see personally.
00:04:26.139 --> 00:04:39.737
But, you know, as you stand there, you you try to envision what that would look, have, look like, you know, with the siege ramp and all the people and maybe the Israelites up on top, trying to battle against the Syrians coming in.
00:04:40.153 --> 00:04:44.951
And, as I said, you kind of you want to envision what that looks like.
00:04:45.451 --> 00:04:52.583
Well, as it turns out, you can you there's actually a picture of this event.
00:04:52.583 --> 00:04:54.293
it's on display.
00:04:54.293 --> 00:04:56.713
Let me guess. Go ahead.
00:04:56.713 --> 00:04:58.005
You got it. You got it.
00:04:58.005 --> 00:04:59.007
It's at the British Museum.
00:04:59.007 --> 00:05:01.216
So let me turn it back over to you.
00:05:01.216 --> 00:05:05.555
Now, why don't you tell us how this picture ended up in the British Museum?
00:05:05.930 --> 00:05:09.766
I think you kind of have to know a little bit about what happened.
00:05:09.850 --> 00:05:10.517
Okay.
00:05:10.517 --> 00:05:17.649
So in Second Kings 19, we read about Sennacherib coming down, and we, read about Hezekiah praying.
00:05:17.649 --> 00:05:23.156
And the angel of God coming and striking down 185,000 Syrians and they go back home.
00:05:23.572 --> 00:05:27.242
Jerusalem was never captured, but the keys had been captured.
00:05:27.910 --> 00:05:31.372
And if you are a king, you want to brag about your country.
00:05:31.663 --> 00:05:33.206
Right? Right?
00:05:33.206 --> 00:05:36.209
Yeah. Lachish is not a capital city.
00:05:36.252 --> 00:05:43.259
But when Sennacherib went back to Nineveh, He actually made decorations.
00:05:43.259 --> 00:05:46.678
He took these reliefs, kind of like a picture carved in stone.
00:05:47.346 --> 00:05:52.517
And he decorated the walls of his palace with pictures of the conquest.
00:05:52.517 --> 00:05:54.812
And, Right.
00:05:54.812 --> 00:05:56.605
Which is really odd.
00:05:54.812 --> 00:05:56.605
That's the capital city.
00:05:56.605 --> 00:05:58.065
That's the one to celebrate.
00:05:58.065 --> 00:06:00.151
But he actually never made there.
00:06:00.151 --> 00:06:05.238
But he he never he never got to the narrow part of the siege works.
00:06:05.238 --> 00:06:09.701
Yes. Some of his officers were outside telling him they need to give up.
00:06:10.327 --> 00:06:11.745
those were excavated.
00:06:11.745 --> 00:06:14.290
Okay. And country of Iraq. Okay.
00:06:14.290 --> 00:06:15.415
It was Iraq.
00:06:15.415 --> 00:06:19.252
And they were taken by the archeologists who were doing the dig back to their home country.
00:06:19.252 --> 00:06:23.382
And so you can actually go to the British Museum and walk down.
00:06:24.132 --> 00:06:28.096
Unfortunately, when I was there, I could just look down the rooms.
00:06:28.596 --> 00:06:31.432
Yeah, some great pictures, but not closeups.
00:06:31.432 --> 00:06:34.435
But you see on these panels the entire story of.
00:06:34.894 --> 00:06:36.937
Okay, okay.
00:06:36.937 --> 00:06:39.439
One panel, actually, you can see the seeds, right?
00:06:39.439 --> 00:06:40.608
Okay.
00:06:40.608 --> 00:06:42.151
You see. Yeah.
00:06:42.151 --> 00:06:43.194
You go to the panel.
00:06:43.194 --> 00:06:44.362
Yeah. Oh, here it is.
00:06:44.362 --> 00:06:48.199
And they have this battering ram up on it.
00:06:48.199 --> 00:06:48.574
Yeah.
00:06:48.574 --> 00:06:52.829
And you can see the fire, the actually the fire arrows being shot.
00:06:53.370 --> 00:06:54.329
Okay.
00:06:54.329 --> 00:06:57.040
You can see the sling stones being thrown.
00:06:57.040 --> 00:07:01.086
Unfortunately, the Assyrians were not known for being very humane.
00:07:01.170 --> 00:07:02.088
Yeah.
00:07:02.088 --> 00:07:05.425
And you can see what happened to the captured people and captured.
00:07:05.716 --> 00:07:06.509
Okay.
00:07:06.509 --> 00:07:09.262
It's it's quite graphic. Yeah.
00:07:09.262 --> 00:07:13.766
One of them, you can actually see the Syrians bringing their gifts back to Assyria. To their gods.
00:07:13.766 --> 00:07:15.600
Okay. King of Assyria. Wow.
00:07:15.600 --> 00:07:24.651
So the whole story is displayed on this, on this mural for, for lack of a better word on that was on the palace of snacker back in Nineveh.
00:07:24.694 --> 00:07:30.699
you actually, when you when you look at it, it makes you realize these things really happened.
00:07:30.699 --> 00:07:30.992
Yeah.
00:07:30.992 --> 00:07:37.497
And before this was discovered, you might have heard authors talk about how bad the Assyrians or how graphic they were.
00:07:38.124 --> 00:07:40.250
And then you actually see, they bragged about.
00:07:40.250 --> 00:07:43.254
Right?
00:07:40.250 --> 00:07:43.254
They were a very cruel people. Right.
00:07:43.463 --> 00:07:46.257
God, in turn, judge them.
00:07:46.257 --> 00:07:49.259

00:08:57.953 --> 00:09:00.956
Now back to the show.
00:09:01.249 --> 00:09:06.836
Well, Mary, we had the opportunity to speak with one of our good friends and mentor to both of Yes.
00:09:06.879 --> 00:09:07.837
Farrell. Jenkins.
00:09:07.837 --> 00:09:15.096
really neat thing about this topic is he has actually participated in archeological digs application. Yes.
00:09:15.096 --> 00:09:19.975
we had an opportunity to sit down with him into talk about his experiences.
00:09:20.268 --> 00:09:23.854
And so let's, let's just listen to some of what we talked about with him.
00:09:25.730 --> 00:09:27.024
We appreciate your time.
00:09:27.024 --> 00:09:32.863
Barry and I have been talking to Pharrell Jenkins, who has worn many hats through the years.
00:09:33.072 --> 00:09:36.075
Professor at Florida College, a preacher.
00:09:36.075 --> 00:09:42.289
You've been leading tours since 1967 over to the not only the Bible lands, but around the world.
00:09:42.289 --> 00:09:44.625
Led tours for 50 years.
00:09:44.625 --> 00:09:48.587
And, 2016 was my 50th year.
00:09:48.837 --> 00:09:52.549
And so I decided that was enough tours to lead.
00:09:53.134 --> 00:10:03.269
And I don't know how many times I've been to Israel I haven't counted them up, but probably 60, 70 times, I don't know, maybe.
00:10:03.476 --> 00:10:04.019
Yeah.
00:10:04.019 --> 00:10:13.821
So you having worked there, with the dig, studying history, studying the Bible, I obviously like you think they all agree.
00:10:14.363 --> 00:10:22.370
But the significance of this city when we see the reliefs in the British Museum and we read snack groups prison.
00:10:23.080 --> 00:10:28.418
Can you touch on kind of why he bragged about this city rather than another city?
00:10:28.918 --> 00:10:31.129
Well, it was a strong city.
00:10:31.129 --> 00:10:33.591
It was a significant city.
00:10:33.591 --> 00:10:38.220
He would have bragged on Jerusalem had he'd taken it and forgotten.
00:10:38.596 --> 00:10:43.808
Yeah, he did say they took 40 Judean cities, I believe in his.
00:10:44.143 --> 00:11:19.636
And so he took a lot of cities, and some of them must have been very small, because there's not that many down through there, you know, that he would have taken, I guess some of them would surrender, that really did show the power of the Assyrians to go that far away from their home and to be able to do all these pictures and then the people that were killed and And then to see these people on their little carts heading off, you know, with one bag of grain, maybe.
00:11:19.845 --> 00:11:25.393
Yeah. And, just really a sad thing.
00:11:25.393 --> 00:11:29.187
Everybody should go to the British Museum and see that original.
00:11:29.437 --> 00:11:37.904
The original is better than the replica in the Israel Museum, but you can't get to both places that that would work out.
00:11:37.904 --> 00:11:38.739
Okay. Yeah.
00:11:38.739 --> 00:11:40.825
To see it that just.
00:11:40.825 --> 00:11:42.743
What would a typical day be like?
00:11:42.743 --> 00:11:43.410
Oh. You dig?
00:11:43.410 --> 00:11:45.663
Okay. You you got up before.
00:11:45.663 --> 00:11:58.801
Before dark, before daylight, and, you got, like a piece of toast and jam and maybe coffee if you like coffee.
00:11:58.801 --> 00:12:04.056
And I'm not sure if I drank any or not, because, I didn't until I retired.
00:12:06.933 --> 00:12:10.187
But, that that's what was available.
00:12:10.645 --> 00:12:16.735
You jumped on the back of a truck, and they drive you to the base of the tail.
00:12:16.735 --> 00:12:19.404
Yeah. You still got to walk up.
00:12:19.404 --> 00:12:20.822
You got to walk up.
00:12:20.822 --> 00:12:27.413
And it's almost like, same as the ram, because you just got to come up to the level of the gate.
00:12:27.538 --> 00:12:28.205
Yeah.
00:12:28.205 --> 00:12:34.961
So you walk down there, up to here, you come in and go to your respective places to work.
00:12:35.754 --> 00:12:38.841
Then about,
00:12:39.924 --> 00:12:43.763
00, maybe something like that could be earlier or later.
00:12:44.846 --> 00:12:48.725
You have a lunch spread out. Okay.
00:12:48.725 --> 00:12:50.394
And so I mean, breakfast.
00:12:50.394 --> 00:12:53.022
Yeah, but the real breakfast. Right?
00:12:53.022 --> 00:12:54.481
Sorry. Yeah. Breakfast.
00:12:54.481 --> 00:12:56.524
Not all that good, but.
00:12:56.524 --> 00:13:00.196
Yes. And so you eat it, and they're big on cucumbers over there.
00:13:01.654 --> 00:13:04.200
So you need that.
00:13:04.200 --> 00:13:10.121
And, that's at sun up and the sun would be coming up.
00:13:10.121 --> 00:13:12.207
You'd see it over here.
00:13:12.207 --> 00:13:14.668
Over.
00:13:14.668 --> 00:13:16.294
Marisha.
00:13:16.294 --> 00:13:19.089
It's important. So you could say. Marisha.
00:13:19.089 --> 00:13:29.642
And you remember the way the, like your letters read was we can no longer see the, the flowers from Zika.
00:13:30.183 --> 00:13:32.852
So as they go was beyond there.
00:13:32.852 --> 00:13:33.937
They couldn't see those.
00:13:33.937 --> 00:13:36.273
Yeah. Letters anymore.
00:13:36.273 --> 00:13:38.984
And that meant the Assyrians were were coming.
00:13:38.984 --> 00:13:40.443
It was bad.
00:13:40.443 --> 00:13:41.778
And the Assyrians did.
00:13:41.778 --> 00:13:43.530
When they're.
00:13:43.530 --> 00:13:51.538
And then they went to Jerusalem and only has a cache having built a fortification as well as the tunnel.
00:13:52.623 --> 00:13:55.042
That's the only thing that saved the city.
00:13:55.042 --> 00:13:55.583
Yeah.
00:13:55.583 --> 00:14:00.214
And I want to tell you, I like to talk about what the Assyrians did.
00:14:00.755 --> 00:14:02.466
People just realized.
00:14:02.466 --> 00:14:09.014
And. Eight 3735 they started at, Hazor and took it.
00:14:09.389 --> 00:14:10.599
They came in from the north.
00:14:11.642 --> 00:14:19.399
Then in, seven, 21, 22, they came to some area and they took it.
00:14:19.399 --> 00:14:26.490
And then when they came on down here to, what time was it, 810 or 801, something like that.
00:14:26.490 --> 00:14:28.241
I forgotten the exact date.
00:14:28.241 --> 00:14:33.246
Like they, they captured this city and almost captured Jerusalem.
00:14:34.706 --> 00:14:37.835
And there they are in this country for all this length of time.
00:14:38.836 --> 00:14:57.730
And, when I talked about the Bible, lands and customs, you just think of the food they ate up, the cattle they kill to eat, the grain they used and all those things taking from the people and taking care of their military.
00:14:58.022 --> 00:14:58.438
Well, sure.
00:14:58.438 --> 00:15:08.865
And if they were in the if they were in the land for that that long, they were people who lived there who never, never understood the land without the Assyrians in it.
00:15:08.865 --> 00:15:10.491
Yes, yes. That's correct.
00:15:10.491 --> 00:15:15.873
So you have a blog where you, you write about, a lot of biblical places.
00:15:16.414 --> 00:15:17.081
What is that?
00:15:17.081 --> 00:15:18.082
What is that blog?
00:15:18.082 --> 00:15:21.086
Well, it's Carroll Jenkins dot blog.
00:15:21.086 --> 00:15:22.254
There we go.
00:15:22.254 --> 00:15:24.089
Well, we appreciate it very much. Yeah, we appreciate it.
00:15:24.089 --> 00:15:30.678
You have been a mentor and a friend to both of us, and we just appreciate you taking the time to spend with us.
00:15:30.846 --> 00:15:32.764
I'm really delighted to do that.
00:15:32.764 --> 00:15:35.308
I've considered you both friends for a long time.
00:15:37.269 --> 00:15:39.104
I remember Well, that was wonderful.
00:15:39.104 --> 00:15:39.812
We are. So.
00:15:39.812 --> 00:15:42.149
Yeah, that was that was wonderful.
00:15:42.149 --> 00:15:48.238
His years of service to the Lord, as well as just his knowledge, that he has shared with everybody.
00:15:48.655 --> 00:15:50.908
He actually does.
00:15:50.908 --> 00:15:53.660
He has a blog that he he does.
00:15:53.660 --> 00:15:55.495
He posts that actually on Facebook as well.
00:15:55.495 --> 00:15:58.874
And so I never read one of his blog posts without learning.
00:15:58.957 --> 00:16:00.542
I am the exact same way.
00:16:00.542 --> 00:16:03.461
It's a pleasure to read every one of those.
00:16:03.461 --> 00:16:17.183
as believers of the Word of God, we don't necessarily need archeology to prove the words of the text to us because of our faith, but thankfully, through archeology, we do get that proof as well as we learn about the culture of the peoples in the times.
00:16:17.183 --> 00:16:18.018
The land of the Bible.
00:16:18.977 --> 00:16:23.148
Every now and then, though, we do find something that really gives us something to remember.
00:16:23.649 --> 00:16:27.945
They're released from sin across palace at the siege of Lachish is a wonderful example of that.
00:16:28.403 --> 00:16:35.952
The ability to see and graphic detail, the horrible details of the event is a visual reminder of what happens when people do not listen to God.
00:16:36.828 --> 00:16:40.541
For centuries, the prophets had warned the people of Judah about their lifestyle.
00:16:41.207 --> 00:16:48.048
In addition, those people had watched the brothers and sisters in the Northern Kingdom fall to the same Assyrians due to their ungodly behavior.
00:16:49.008 --> 00:16:50.551
What about our lives?
00:16:50.551 --> 00:16:54.971
The same God that was in the southern kingdom of Judah continues to warn us through His word.
00:16:54.971 --> 00:17:03.438
We need to listen to what he says so that we don't meet a similar fate. And thanks to snacker of the King of Assyria, we have a vivid reminder for us all.
00:17:06.275 --> 00:17:08.652

Join us next time when Dan and I are going to look into some burial practices of the Jewish people during the first century.
00:17:58.660 --> 00:18:01.872
How did that happen and how did it relate to what we read in the Bible?
00:18:02.372 --> 00:18:04.415
That's what we'll be discussing.
00:18:04.415 --> 00:18:11.048
Until then, thank you for joining us, and we look forward to being with you on the next episode of Digging Deeper.
