Material Mindset
"Design is the first signal of human intention."
— William McDonough
Throughout history, civilizations have been remembered as much for how they built as for what they built. Stone, timber, steel and concrete each transformed the possibilities of architecture, while quietly reflecting the values of the societies that produced them. Today, another transformation is underway. It is less visible than a new skyline and quieter than a breakthrough technology, yet it may prove equally significant. We are beginning to question not only what we build, but what becomes of the materials long after the ribbon cutting.
For generations, the building industry has followed a remarkably linear path. We extract resources, manufacture products, assemble buildings, and, eventually, demolish them. But in a world increasingly shaped by climate change, resource scarcity, and a growing awareness of embodied carbon, a different philosophy is beginning to emerge—one that asks us to think in circles rather than straight lines.
Circular design challenges a fundamental assumption of our profession. What if every material carried not only a story of where it came from, but also a plan for where it might go next? What if the measure of successful design were not simply beauty, durability, or performance, but the ability of an entire building to adapt, to be repaired, to be carefully disassembled, and ultimately to become the foundation for something yet to be imagined?
Across Europe, these conversations are influencing manufacturers, architects, policymakers, and researchers alike. Here in North America, the movement is gathering momentum as organizations rethink the relationship between product innovation, environmental stewardship, and long-term resilience. Increasingly, sustainability is no longer defined by a single material or certification. It is becoming a philosophy of responsibility—one that considers the entire life of a building and every component within it.
"Innovation is measured not only by what we create, but by what we choose to preserve."
DesignIDEATE explores the intersections where change begins. We are curious about the ideas quietly reshaping our profession long before they become common practice. We seek out those who are helping us see around the next corner, challenging long-held assumptions and inviting us to think differently about the future of design.
Today's guest works at precisely that intersection.
Kali Pharand is the Sustainability and Standards Manager for Schluter Systems North America. Her work bridges sustainability, technical standards, product transparency, and the practical realities of design and construction. Collaborating with architects, designers, manufacturers, and industry organizations, she helps translate rapidly evolving environmental standards into meaningful knowledge that informs better decisions throughout the design process.
Our conversation, as documented in this episode of DesignIDEATE, extends well beyond any single product or manufacturer. Together, we explore how circular thinking is reshaping construction, what Europe may be teaching us about the next generation of sustainable design, and why the future of architecture may depend as much on stewardship as it does on innovation.
