00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.963
Christmas is a season of hope, joy, love, and giving, but for many of us, it's also a season when old hurts resurface.
00:00:08.269 --> 00:00:13.519
Have you ever felt a hurt that was so deep that it felt like forgiveness was impossible?
00:00:13.756 --> 00:00:19.667
Maybe it was a family rift, a broken promise, or maybe even something that you can't forgive yourself for.
00:00:19.789 --> 00:00:23.780
Today, we're going to talk about the hardest gift to give this season forgiveness.
00:00:23.867 --> 00:00:28.338
By the end of this episode, you're going to see how forgiveness is not only possible.
00:00:28.378 --> 00:00:31.871
But it's the greatest gift that you can give and receive.
00:00:31.894 --> 00:00:32.914
I hope you'll join us.
00:00:33.054 --> 00:00:35.164
Do you fear what lies beyond retirement?
00:00:35.234 --> 00:00:40.204
What if it's a gateway to a life filled with purpose, meaning, and adventure rather than an end?
00:00:40.295 --> 00:00:47.314
Discover peace and fulfillment as you boldly enter this new chapter in Courageous Retirement, a Christian podcast.
00:00:47.935 --> 00:00:50.375
I'm your host, author and coach, Vona Johnson.
00:00:50.454 --> 00:00:51.344
Let's get started.
00:00:51.661 --> 00:00:59.762
As children, we start out focusing on the gifts and then as we get older, we start to realize kind of like the Grinch in the Grinch that stole Christmas.
00:00:59.762 --> 00:01:03.512
We began to realize that Christmas is about so much more.
00:01:03.755 --> 00:01:09.728
It wasn't until I purchased a book called The Night I Met Santa" by Lora Johnson.
00:01:09.728 --> 00:01:12.668
And it really struck me because it takes.
00:01:13.299 --> 00:01:21.159
The story of Santa and a little boy who was pretty rambunctious and, and actually just quite naughty on Christmas Eve.
00:01:21.728 --> 00:01:27.299
And his mom took his stocking away and told him that he didn't deserve to have any presents..
00:01:27.918 --> 00:01:33.489
I interviewed her and learned about her backstory of how it all came about.
00:01:33.539 --> 00:01:34.618
What I really love.
00:01:35.088 --> 00:01:36.259
About that story.
00:01:37.099 --> 00:01:40.478
Is that it really it hits to the core of Christianity.
00:01:40.509 --> 00:01:43.269
It hits to the core of why Jesus came down.
00:01:43.718 --> 00:01:55.349
We know this, we know that he came to forgive us for our sins, but sometimes we forget to make that link between when he came down as a little baby in a manger that we sing about in all the beautiful Christmas carols.
00:01:55.569 --> 00:02:01.213
And we forget to make the link to the man who died on the cross 30 some years later.
00:02:01.263 --> 00:02:02.793
And it's all about forgiveness.
00:02:03.213 --> 00:02:24.960
Those of us at the retirement age, especially, I think you begin to realize how important it is that we focus on that aspect of forgiveness, both for ourselves and the people that we need to forgive, but then also for our families and to help them realize that we all need to give forgiveness.
00:02:25.109 --> 00:02:29.688
You may be struggling to offer forgiveness to someone who has hurt you.
00:02:30.079 --> 00:02:38.199
Maybe it was over a harsh conversation about politics in this very difficult year where we were all in disagreement with someone.
00:02:38.656 --> 00:02:44.126
Or maybe it was, a conversation years ago with a family member or a friend or a coworker.
00:02:44.425 --> 00:02:47.955
That has just left a lingering hurt in our heart.
00:02:48.075 --> 00:02:53.806
It could go all the way back to our childhood where something was done, that was very, very harmful or damaging.
00:02:54.068 --> 00:03:04.508
We have sometimes have a tendency to categorize sins and we have a tendency sometimes to think that other people's sins are worse than our sins.
00:03:05.258 --> 00:03:06.908
If those people have hurt us.
00:03:07.210 --> 00:03:07.930
Badly.
00:03:08.036 --> 00:03:13.075
We have a tendency to want to hang on to that hurt and, and hold that against them.
00:03:13.786 --> 00:03:17.895
Yes, we need to have boundaries and we need to protect ourselves from being hurt again.
00:03:18.526 --> 00:03:20.056
But we also need to forgive.
00:03:20.746 --> 00:03:28.045
And something that really came to mind to me recently that really surprised and almost shocked me was the fact that.
00:03:28.925 --> 00:03:37.506
We know the Lord's prayer where it says, give us this day, our daily bread and forgive us, our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
00:03:37.788 --> 00:03:39.109
What I didn't realize.
00:03:39.229 --> 00:03:42.649
I knew forgiveness was a big thing, but what I did not realize.
00:03:43.248 --> 00:03:49.188
Until really just recently, was the very next clause after Jesus gives.
00:03:49.848 --> 00:03:58.739
His apostles, the Lord's prayer Says if you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly father will forgive you.
00:03:59.549 --> 00:04:04.558
But if you refuse to forgive others, your father will not forgive you.
00:04:05.429 --> 00:04:06.028
Ouch.
00:04:07.408 --> 00:04:08.968
Who in your life?
00:04:09.568 --> 00:04:12.508
Have you been holding on to.
00:04:13.288 --> 00:04:23.519
That gift of grace, that gifted forgiveness that you could give, who are you preventing their freedom and your own freedom by forgiving them for whatever it is that they did.
00:04:23.968 --> 00:04:30.519
Again, yes, we need to have boundaries and we need to not put ourselves in harm's way.
00:04:32.228 --> 00:04:33.428
But we need to forgive.
00:04:34.389 --> 00:04:37.238
And truly that's what the Christmas story is all about.
00:04:37.288 --> 00:04:40.228
I want to encourage you to go listen to.
00:04:40.519 --> 00:04:41.778
The the story.
00:04:41.889 --> 00:04:44.199
The night I met Santa's by Lora Johnson.
00:04:44.918 --> 00:04:47.468
I recorded it on my show.
00:04:48.278 --> 00:04:51.129
Longing for more years ago, actually it was five years ago.
00:04:51.129 --> 00:04:51.999
This Christmas.
00:04:52.718 --> 00:04:57.608
Uh, I did an interview with Lora on episode 83 of Longing for More.
00:04:57.608 --> 00:05:01.358
And I will put a link to the show in my show notes today.
00:05:02.059 --> 00:05:06.829
and then I also did a bonus recording of me reading the story.
00:05:07.559 --> 00:05:10.588
And I just encourage you to go listen to that bonus episode.
00:05:10.889 --> 00:05:22.649
If you have time, listen to the interview with Lora because it is just a beautiful example of grace and it's such a beautiful reminder and these are Lora's words, not my own, but it's a reminder that Christmas is all about.
00:05:23.098 --> 00:05:24.119
Getting the gift.
00:05:25.168 --> 00:05:26.428
We never deserved.
00:05:27.119 --> 00:05:27.959
And never will.
00:05:28.588 --> 00:05:29.218
Think about that.
00:05:29.278 --> 00:05:34.139
Christmas is all about getting the gift that we never deserved and never will.
00:05:36.119 --> 00:05:36.689
I love that.
00:05:37.019 --> 00:05:38.639
They're just brings me joy.
00:05:39.778 --> 00:05:42.238
But I also like how the book ties.
00:05:42.959 --> 00:05:50.309
Our traditional thoughts of Christmas with Santa together with the true meaning of Christmas and helps make it real for children.
00:05:50.338 --> 00:05:51.809
So I hope you'll listen to it.
00:05:51.988 --> 00:05:53.759
I hope you'll share it with your children.
00:05:54.629 --> 00:06:01.639
And I just pray that as you enter into this week of Christmas and beyond.
00:06:02.269 --> 00:06:03.319
That you will.
00:06:04.038 --> 00:06:06.949
Think about who in your life?
00:06:07.668 --> 00:06:08.899
Do you need to forgive?
00:06:09.406 --> 00:06:13.487
Maybe you have an estranged relationship with one of your children.
00:06:13.487 --> 00:06:22.117
And there's a lot of pain from years of lack of communication or strained communication about some of the life choices that they've made.
00:06:22.490 --> 00:06:33.350
Or maybe it's a hurt from a past friendship and that friendship was broken from a betrayal or a misunderstanding of some sort that's just never healed.
00:06:33.723 --> 00:06:55.281
Maybe there's some conflict in your marriage and decades old unresolved issues or deep hurts that have been buried in your marriage resurface as you go into retirement and you're starting to spend more time together Is it possible that you have workplace wounds from unappreciated overlook or maybe misunderstood circumstances during your career?
00:06:55.541 --> 00:07:00.252
Is it possible that you have some church conflict that lingers in your heart?
00:07:00.552 --> 00:07:03.942
There have been disagreements over leadership decisions that have been made.
00:07:04.242 --> 00:07:12.548
Or even theological perspectives that are happening within your congregation that led to division and possibly you even leaving the church.
00:07:12.922 --> 00:07:27.822
It's possible maybe for you or someone, you know, that there have been family disputes over inheritances or caregiving and in the proper way to handle those So often arguments come out over wills and caregiving responsibilities for aging parents.
00:07:28.048 --> 00:07:34.119
And people fight over the property, who should have gotten what, and is it time to let that go?
00:07:34.471 --> 00:07:45.091
You possibly may be, have hurts from your neighbors or other community members on disagreements over property lines, or how things are supposed to be taken care of.
00:07:45.791 --> 00:07:49.242
Maybe you're offended by something that was said or done in the past.
00:07:49.242 --> 00:07:51.252
And is it truly time to let that go?
00:07:51.771 --> 00:07:55.345
And most importantly, is there a need for self-forgiveness.
00:07:56.004 --> 00:08:02.714
Are you living with regret over missed opportunities, unkind words, or just mistakes that have happened in the past?
00:08:03.014 --> 00:08:10.612
Maybe it's something even as big as having a past abortion, is it time to let yourself have forgiveness and to truly move on.
00:08:11.516 --> 00:08:16.016
I'm guessing somebody's name has come up for you as you were listening to this episode.
00:08:16.526 --> 00:08:18.206
And I want you to write it down right now.
00:08:19.165 --> 00:08:20.875
And then I want you to pray about it.
00:08:21.295 --> 00:08:25.045
I want you to ask God to help you to forgive.
00:08:25.526 --> 00:08:28.466
Because if you haven't done it by now, you can't do it on your own.
00:08:28.766 --> 00:08:30.175
You'll need his help.
00:08:30.716 --> 00:08:32.785
So ask him to help you to forgive.
00:08:33.416 --> 00:08:36.265
And just get on your knees or when you're out for a walk.
00:08:36.296 --> 00:08:37.076
It doesn't matter.
00:08:37.735 --> 00:08:40.826
But just pray and ask him to help you and then let it go.
00:08:41.785 --> 00:08:45.056
And find the joy in Christmas, joy.
00:08:45.086 --> 00:08:50.576
Isn't all about the laughter and the fun and the cookies and the eggnog, joy is about.
00:08:51.145 --> 00:08:59.216
Finding rest in our Lord and trusting that he has a beautiful plan for us, even through the difficult times in our lives.
00:08:59.546 --> 00:09:01.885
I just want to thank you for stopping by today.
00:09:02.035 --> 00:09:05.576
Next episode will be in 2025.
00:09:05.865 --> 00:09:10.186
I am excited to share some really fun episodes with you coming into the new year.
00:09:10.576 --> 00:09:12.346
And I'm just so blessed that you are here.
00:09:12.346 --> 00:09:19.035
I have an amazing Christmas if this is after Christmas and you're still listening to it, I just hope you have an amazing day.
00:09:19.365 --> 00:09:20.416
And remember that.
00:09:21.015 --> 00:09:21.946
All of our time.
00:09:22.216 --> 00:09:24.586
Has in the season of advent is waiting for Christ.
00:09:24.615 --> 00:09:26.145
We are still waiting for Christ.
00:09:26.446 --> 00:09:29.716
So seek him always seek him first above all else.
00:09:30.466 --> 00:09:34.785
And your life will just be so full of joy and happiness.
00:09:35.296 --> 00:09:39.735
Maybe not the happiness, always, but the joy in knowing that he's got your back.
00:09:40.426 --> 00:09:42.105
Thanks again for stopping by today.
00:09:42.405 --> 00:09:48.346
I pray that you will engage your faith with whoever God brings to you in this holiday season.
00:09:48.796 --> 00:09:53.115
And that you will live your more and experience the fullness.
00:09:53.505 --> 00:09:56.475
That courageous retirement can bring into your life.
00:09:56.895 --> 00:09:57.495
God bless.
