Conversations and connections: When courage meets compassion

Kerryn Powell, The Network Catalyst, talks with Kevin Humphries.

Kevin Humphreys served in the Australian Army for 20 years flying Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters. Undertaking a variety of flying and staff roles, he deployed on multiple operational and humanitarian missions around the world. Following his military service, he spent the next decade as a civilian Search and Rescue pilot.

More importantly, Kevin now plays a significant role in mental health advocacy. He is the Mental Health Ambassador for AIRBUS Australia Pacific, a Community Ambassador for Mates4Mates (Veteran’s rehabilitation charity) and the founder of Cor Infinitus which brings dignity, respect and healing to the families of those who’ve served our nation and taken their own lives.

Kevin’s mission is to lift humanity by inspiring others to find their own courage and compassion.

For a long time, Kevin kept his post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety buried deep. Today, Kevin shares what happens when you hit rock bottom, how he figured it out, and the puzzle pieces that made a difference in transforming his life.

1. Mental Illness is normal, manageable and recoverable for the great majority of people – even if it doesn’t feel like it at the time.

2. The stories we tell ourselves… What you say to yourself and about yourself is what your future will become. Self talk needs to be compassionate – eg primary school child learning lego for first time.

3. Even if you don’t know what to say, just start talking. Even if you don’t know how to respond, just keep listening.
