What if the spiritual practices we have built our faith around are actually working against us? That is the question at the heart of this message drawn from Matthew 6. As we walk through Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, we are confronted with a truth that cuts straight to the core of our religious lives: it is not enough to do the right things. The why behind what we do matters just as much as the what. Jesus addresses three foundational practices of faith -- generosity, prayer, and fasting -- and in each case, he draws a sharp line between performing righteousness for an audience and expressing genuine love for God and others. The word he uses for those who get it wrong is telling. The original meaning is not simply someone who says one thing and does another, but an actor, a performer, a pretender. The question we are left with is deeply personal: are we performing for the crowd, or are we truly connecting with God? The reward Jesus promises to those who practice their faith in secret is not a trophy or public recognition -- it is God himself. More of his presence, more of his closeness, more of the relationship we were created for. That reframes everything.
