Speaker 1: Passing Jackson here for co Sports with Michael Caryanas and Brent Reid and boys, we have some big breaking news, Mick. What is going on in the crazy world of rugby league right now?
00:00:09
Speaker 2: Yeah, big news Tice Ivan Cleary has decided to step away from coaching at the end of next season. He made the decision a while ago, but informed the Panthers of that move and you know, coach out the remaining eighteen months of his contract and finish up at the end of next year. But yeah, it was quite a big day at Penrith. They announced that Peter Wallace will be the next coach after i'ving clear, the current assistant coach at Penereth, and he'll take the reins for the three seasons following next year.
00:00:40
Speaker 1: And it's been a slow couple of weeks news. Why since the Jerome Leyes news broker Reedy, Where has this come from? Has this been something that's kind of been sprung on last minute or has this been in the works for quite some time?
00:00:51
Speaker 3: Well, I think it's been the works for quite some time. We've all been hypothesizing and speculated, speculating about Nathan through his future. I think at times which speculated over Ivan's future as well. Obviously those links with the Roosters and talk about Manly and all those other clubs in the NRL that would love to get their hands on Ivan. Clearly that I don't think. I've never wanted to coach against Penrith and by the sounds, but he won't. But look, whilst this has been a shock today, I don't think it's a complete surprise. I think, as I said, there's been a bit of talk around his future at Penrith and look he's won four comp said for in succession. It's funny, Tye. I was just talking to someone before about I remember at L three sixty about five years ago, we put up Bryan Smith stats. Now, Brian Smith was a coach who coached the most games, never won a camp, and we were saying is having a danger of becoming the next Brian Smith? And then he went on and run four competitions. So we all looked like idiots in hindsight, but it's amazing what he's done. He's climbed them out and he's going to try and climb it again a couple more times yet. But I wasn't look, I wasn't completely stunned by what happened today. I thought I was shocked that it came out today, but not shocked that he wouldn't continue beyond next season for sure.
00:01:59
Speaker 1: And you met, which is something really interesting there the future of Nathan Cleary now, Mick, what is your read on the future in eighth obviously available to negotiate from November one, and from what we're hearing, he's going to go to test the market and see what's out there for him. What's your read on that situation?
00:02:14
Speaker 2: Yeah, Penwth boss mccameron wasn't as clear as that today, Tyson. He's hopeful of getting the deal done before November one. Nathan's intimated to the club that he want to gets through the origin period and I think after the origin period that they'll sit down and try and get that deal done. It's important to note that Peter Wallace is part of that coaching set up already and Penrith are quietly confident that, you know, whilst Ivan is not there in a formal capacity in terms of coach and you'll still be employed by the club, but the relationship that Peter Wallace does have the delights of Nathan Cleary might be enough just to keep him there.
00:02:48
Speaker 3: I've got to say, I think it's vital they keep now that Peter Wallace can take over in twenty twenty eight. It's vital, vital that they keep Nathan Cleary because if you're that coach and you're taking over and Nathan Cleary leaves at the same time, that leaves such a hole on that forty team, You've basically got to start again, really, and that's a difficult job for a coach to follow on the footsteps surviving Cleary and then Nathan walks out the door. It's crucial I keep Nathan Cleary now, They've got to keep it ready.
00:03:16
Speaker 1: What about all those other guys off contracts? How much of an impact does this decision have on all of them? Penrith are in a massive salary cap Sques, Yes, they are optimistic of keeping all these guys, but this is going to be a massive part the loss of Ivan Cleary in a couple of those decisions. We heard Lea Martin the other week say he's keen to see what's out there, Isaiao. Similar a couple of guys getting towards the back end of their career. How important is this decision with Ivan Cleary in making their decisions moving forward.
00:03:45
Speaker 3: They won't keep them all TuS. I mean they're going to lose some. The difficult part for them is if Nathan goes to November one, it means you've got to keep one point seventy five two million dollars aside in your salary cap. It's going to make it really hard to juggle those other negotiations. But they won't keep them all. I mean, those talks are ongoing. I'd imagine. Look, there's been a lot of talk to Brian to go to market Lea Martin, you mentioned Mitch Kenny. They're not going to keep them all, but you know, you've got to prioritize them, and Nathan's got to be priority one, two and three. He's the guy you've got to keep and then you build around him. But they're not going to keep them all. Twice they're going to lose. Regardless of the Ivan was there or not in twenty twenty eight, they were going to lose some guys.
00:04:23
Speaker 1: And I'll open this up to both of you boys. We heard Ivan say in the press conference that you know he's he's stepping away from coaching in twenty twenty seven, can we see him in a different sorry, at the end of twenty twenty seven, can we see him in a different capacity at another club? Potentially? Could he move to one of these newer franchises to help build in maybe a football manager role or something like that, maybe away from coaching, but still in and around the game.
00:04:47
Speaker 2: You know, he is quite steadfast in the fact that he will never coach against Peneth whether or not that moves into one of the roles that you're talking about in terms of a head of footy or what. But I don't know if he'll ever coach again. But he was pretty steadfast and he's believed that it will never coach against Penrith. So you got to take on and naturally at his word once the coach Rep Footy made that pretty clear. So he's putting the blow towards on a few REP coaches already.
00:05:12
Speaker 3: What about Laurie, Laurie's out of the pub origin hasn't even started. How good Laurie's Laurie's and drama. I mean, yeah, he's obviously worked with Laurie. It was a lot. I can't remember it was Lorie or the year before. Remember he was in the coach's box. Rory was Freddy? Was it was Freddie, wasn't it? Yeah, so he's worked with Freddy before at origin level. I'd imagine he'll be in Newsith wals coach down the track. Maybe he coaches Australia down the track. And you know it wouldn't despied to his stays at Penrith in some sort of director of director of Rugby League role. But you know he won't be lost to the game while the sounds. But that's a good thing because smart guy obviously a great coach and he's going to be a great leader for a footy club whoever lands him. Can I just say, Tys? Can I just say he's won a lot of games. I'd love to see him coach new so he learns what it's like to lose.
00:05:59
Speaker 1: Well, that's what I wanted to quickly touch on. You did say you chucked out the new South Wales role. If for some reason that became available next year, could we potentially see him move into that role while he's still coaching Penrith or will it have to be once he's finished. I'll open it up to you first.
00:06:15
Speaker 3: Ready, I wouldn't imagine you want to. I would imagine that last season he's going to throw it in the winning coup, so he won't want to be distracted by Origin. That's what I imagine.
00:06:24
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I'm with Ready on that. I don't see a world or in his final season at Penrith that he coaches Origin. I just yeah, I just don't think that happened. So, yeah, he'll be coaching the Panthers next year and that's probably it.
00:06:39
Speaker 1: And boys, I mean, with all this news about Ivan Cleary leaving, it does mean Peter Wallace does take the job. Now, what can you tell us about Peter? Obviously an assistant coach for a long time. I think he had a lot to do with their their systems since he retired. So Mick, what what's Peter Wallace like as a coach? What can Penrith fans look forward to when he takes the reins from Iven.
00:07:00
Speaker 2: Yeah, he basically took over from defense from Cameron Serrato and Serrato took on that Boardog's job. So he's had a pretty influential part of Penris structured defensively. He's coached the new Southwest Cup side to a Grand Final. Actually in his final season. He actually played alongside Nathan Cleary, as Ieo Emerges, Leona and Dylan Edwards as well, So he's known these guys for a very long time and I think that's going to be part of the draw card for Penreth to try and keep some of those big name players at the club.
00:07:35
Speaker 3: It's kind a bit from Ivan's cloth, isn't He's a bit He keeps his distance a bit from the media. He doesn't give you much. He doesn't give much away. Pete obviously really good footballer for a long time and he's doing a good job in the coaching ranks. And for me, it was a logical move for me. I mean, you know, he's been in the ranks, he's learned, he's trade under Ivan Cleary, he's served his apprenticeship and as I said, he's a bit. He's almost like a clear clone in many respects Ivan Theary clones, So you're going to get some consistency there. And as I said, logical step for me. And he's a good the dealings I've had with Pete Wallace over the years is a good black too, so I think it's a good result for Panth. It's a smart move by the Panthers
