5: Hey, I are doing Sun Smith from Atlanta, Georgia. ⁓ number five, running back for the Razorbacks. Appreciate you having me.
Payton Dunn: Thank you, thank again such for coming on. ⁓ the first question I wanna start you with is how's your summer going? Like what's that looking like for ya?
5: ⁓ yeah, summer's been fun, man. Been been a good grind. It's been a good grind. We've been putting in lot of work. ⁓ getting close with my teammates season be here before you know it. So, man, just enjoying the the good weather, being outside, running, jumping, just working on my game. So it's been fun.
Payton Dunn: What do you what do you do outside of football during the summer?
5: Good question. I had one to I had once a once one of the national parks out here. It's called like ⁓ Devil's Den National Park or something like that. So I like to get outdoors, you know, fish, hike. I'd be going to the gun range sometimes, you know, stuff like that. So just stuff to it's fun that I can enjoy with my friends and stuff. ⁓ and then back home I hang out with my family and then, you know, just work on my craft. So normal stuff. I'd be chilling, going to the movies.
Payton Dunn: It sounds like a very Arkansas summer. ⁓ Yeah. Do you could you give us like a recap of how you thought Spring Ball went for you?
5: You fear me? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, man. I feel like Spring Ball went I feel like Spring Ball w was really solid. I was able to, you know, work on some weaknesses. That was my ⁓ my focus point, you know, become a leader, push other teammates and just get better and get, you know, adjusted to the offense with the new guys and, you know, especially the old linemen. Get get in sync with them. ⁓ I'm going back watching some spring ball right now, seeing how I can be better moving forward. So I feel like the foundation was set. And then this is what we're putting in right now, get us ready for fall camp. So Yeah. I'm pretty confident in what we've been doing so far, so I just can't wait to see. And you know. Yeah.
Payton Dunn: Now was there a huge difference from spring ball this year to the other spring balls you've had with Coach Silverfield or did he kinda keep it the same?
5: ⁓ I feel like, you know, it's kind of the same like foundation and format or what I'm s you know. ⁓ kind of the same in that nature. But you know, it was different players, so different better players, different different guys. So I was able to step my game up some, but you know, we still worked hard and I just I don't remember exactly everything from the past years 'cause you know, I'm in the present right now, but you know, I just know we be working hard. We be trying to just get better and just, you know, own the ball was a vocal point of spring. And so yes, sir.
Payton Dunn: Makes sense, makes sense. ⁓ What is the one thing like fans should know about you before the season gets started?
5: Sure. I mean as a person or player. Nah, I feel like, you know, as a person I'm a cool dude. I'm a cool dude. I can always come up to me, introduce yourself. Humble. ⁓ very cool. as a player, I feel like they should just know, man, I'm
Payton Dunn: Either one.
5: explosive. I wanna be, you know, I just wanna I just wanna put on for the state, you know what I'm saying? I I've been following Arkansas. Got a great fan base, real passionate. So I just wanna put on for the state, leave it all on the field and get some wins, you know. So I'm just a team first player and I'm I'm gonna pull it all on the line. I'm putting on on line. Well I'm at least that's that's what that's what I'm striving for for sure. I just wanna, you know make the fans happy.
Payton Dunn: And and you know the coaching. For sure. That that's what we love to hear in in you know.
5: That's what I'm saying. You feel me? Yeah, I just wanna win.
Payton Dunn: And the coaching staff put a lot of trust into you, right? 'Cause they gave you number five. Can you talk about that?
5: Yeah, so yeah, man, it's been a number, you know, there's there's been a lot of me since I was younger. You know, I was born on the fifth day of February. It was my first number when I played football because I didn't even plan on playing. And they was just like, Man, they seen me do some drills on the sideline. It like, ⁓ man, this kid pretty athletic. Man, they told me to come out there and I like, I guess I'd give it a try. I'll go out there and play with him. They just gave me a jersey, had number five on it. I was actually in red too. The school was red. So It kinda meant to be, you know what I'm saying? So and then, you know, I continued to have have a number through my career. Stuff like that. I had it at Memphis. I had fifteen at first, you know, still had a five in it. Then had ⁓ ended up just getting number five and then came here and then, you know, learned about the history and always knew about Derry McFadden. So I'm like, man, that's what's up, man. That's that's a big spotlight to be on. And then sometimes you think to yourself, ⁓ am I? And should I really be wearing this, you know, one of the greatest running backs ever and wear this. But then it's like, man, maybe God put me in putting this position and I'm able to just do the legacy. So it all just comes down on bending on yourself and being confident in it. And just being you, not trying to be like nobody else with being you. And then so, man, that's my mindset on it. But I'm thankful, man. I I know a lot of people be saying, you know, I s I know what they be saying, but yeah, it's it'll it'll be cool. It'll be cool, man. Grateful.
Payton Dunn: Yeah. Well I'm I'm glad the pressure's not getting to you 'cause I know that can be pressures because you know when I think it's
5: Pressure is a privilege. Preference is a privilege. It's an opportunity for you to rise, you know what I'm saying?
Payton Dunn: Yeah, you're right. You got the pressure on you to go do better. But, you know, before you transferred to Arkansas, right, Sutton Smith gave me a little bit of PTSD here in that name, right? 'Cause you ran for a hundred and forty something yards and a touchdown against the Hogs. ⁓ can you go into like how it is to go and play against a team and now you're playing for the team, right?
5: Yeah, that's a that's a good that's a good question. ⁓ I I kinda I don't know. I kinda really don't think about it too much. Like, you know, I might be on my phone and memories come up from like a year ago, you know how and your photo is out, you know, memories come up and I see it. But I don't know. It's just it don't even feel like that though. I don't know how to explain it. Like it's it's really cool to be here. I'm really enjoying it. I'm really enjoying it. It's not like, man, I just played against these guys last year. I don't know, 'cause it's kind of a new team as well, you know, last Team last year has some great players, they got drafted and everything. But it's kinda like a like a new era, you know what mean? So and then you're playing against a whole bunch of new t new teams this year on the schedule. So it's not like I went to a team in the conference, in the conference I was in. It's like, man, nah, like this this kind of like a it's where I'm supposed to be. It's kind of a big opportunity. And then all the everything aligned the way it was supposed to. Because who says I would be here if we didn't play all last year. So
Payton Dunn: Right.
5: That's just kinda how I look at it on some everything happened for a reason kind of thing and man, it just feels good to walk around campus and eat when I want and go use the facility whenever, have great facilities and stuff like that. So yeah, thank God. I just thank God for it for real.
Payton Dunn: Right. And you have the same coach and same O C so I mean there's a little bit of similarities there too.
5: Yeah. Yeah. So I was able to adjust quickly and, you know, just just feel comfortable and that's important when you're making a big, you know, move like that and you know, career decision.
Payton Dunn: Okay. Now, you know, I will say for fans that don't know, it's like last year you fumbled the ball two times, but the both of those were recovered, right? You didn't have any lost fumbles, which if fans, you know, watched Arkansas last year, one reason we lost to Memphis is cause we fumbled. We lost to all of Mizcause we fumbled. So, you know, I think ⁓ fans are gonna be really excited to see that ball security ⁓ with you is a huge plus ⁓ compared to guys in the past. But Now the next question I wanna ask you is what would you tell, you know, athletes coming up, you know, you've been around college for a long time in this new NIL era, but like what advice would you give to new guys, maybe like a senior in high school, before they come in and try to negotiate, you know, what is college football nowadays?
5: Man, I don't know if you want my take on that, because it'll probably be different. Cause you know, I'm I always had an underdog mentality. Like I never really just like played football for the money. You know what I'm saying? I always just played because it was fun. And I feel like you gotta prove yourself before you know you get any type of money. You know, some people might think different. They might think, man, let me make all the money I can in college right now because the NFL not guaranteed. always had an underdog mentality. Like I never really just like played football for the money. You know what I'm saying? I always just played because it was fun. ⁓ And I feel like you gotta prove yourself before you know you get any type of You know, some people think different. They might think, man, let me make all the money I can in college right now So you gotta think to yourself like what's what what do you what are you searching for? Like what's your what your what is your goal? You know, what you trying to get out of a school. So you gotta think to yourself like what's what what do you what are you searching for? Like what's your what your what is your goal? You know, what you trying to get out of a school. But my advice would give them is, man, go somewhere like where, you know, they'll showcase you and your talents to where you can make a name for yourself and just don't all the time chase the logo because you'll never know, but somewhere where you can actually develop and play at, bruh. Cause a lot sort of people lose sight of.
Payton Dunn: I I think that was a great take. Like that's exactly what, you know, people wanna hear, you know. I think so, you know, you can go to a big school just 'cause you offer you a big check and then it doesn't work out and now you're having to go down and work your way up with less years of eligibility. So sometimes it could work out or sometimes it couldn't, but yeah, you gotta go best fit for you I think is the best choice.
5: Yeah. Yeah, and you feel me and sometimes maybe that's in a position like you're a Jeremiah Smith type talent. You can go to big school, get paid a bunch of money and produce, or you know, you might take the G five route, then go P fo P four, or you might go, you know, everybody path different. So I'd say go where, you know, they believe in you and where they make you a priority at and you'll know you'll know where they make you a priority at.
Payton Dunn: Yeah. And the NFL's gonna find you wherever you're at, you know? ⁓ so the ne the next question I have for you is, you know, on the schedule, I seen, you know, the athletic department put some words out, but you know, was the team bothered at all by a late night game in Utah and then having to f you know, play Georgia early morning the next Saturday?
5: But that's funny you ask that. Cause I remember when they had posted it, man. I was in the training room and you know people was reacting to it and stuff. But I ain't gonna lie, some of the some of the players is like low-key, like low-key turn, like low-key hype, like man, it don't even matter, bro. Like we go, we gotta have to come out and play regardless. Like ain't nothing we could do about it. We're gonna go play Utah night games, gonna be lit, you know, crowd gonna be turned. Then we know we're gonna have to prepare for another big game the next week. And we can't do nothing but keep our mind right where we go. Man, they got us doing this, you know what I'm saying? Like we can't complain 'cause if we go out there stink it up for y'all, then it's like we proving them right. So man, I it's it's gonna be fun, man. It's gonna be fun. And I'm just I'm just, you know, ecstatic. I get to be somewhere like this and play.
Payton Dunn: Right. Which is gonna go probably till one in the morning for us back home, you know. It's like that's what I seen. I was like, ⁓ I've got to stay up late. ⁓ So, you know, have you looked in like this is a question you might have an answer on or might not, but just a curiosity thing with all the Texas Tech stuff going around right now. You kept up with any of that?
5: You feel me? You feel me? Yeah, it's good though. Mm-hmm. Nah, nah I haven't. Like I I see ⁓ who's the quarterback? Quarterback, right? I think I believe he was at Cincinnati. I believe the quarterback was at Cincinnati and ⁓ he was gambling or something, right? But they Yeah.
Payton Dunn: Yeah, there's water back. Yeah, well that's Yeah, he bet yeah. When he was at Indiana he bet on Indiana forty times.
5: Yeah. Okay, then I seen that he get another year. But what confused me is that I thought like if you gamble, like, especially on your team, then you out of there. So I don't I just feel like they should keep it fair for everybody. Like, man, the rules are rules. If you're breaking the rules, don't make you know exceptions for it. So that's just I ain't gonna speak too much on it, but man, cause I don't s I I try to like stay off the net a lot of times, but yeah. It's a crazy situation. Crazy, crazy sports world, crazy, college football, crazy.
Payton Dunn: Right. Right. Yeah. Yeah, which teams said they were gonna take him off the schedule if he played, which is is a very interesting thing coming up next season. I just wanted a player's opinion on that. Now the last thing for current events that I'll ask you before we get into our games is do you keep up with the World Cup?
5: Crazy. It's crazy. I'm not gonna lie, nah, I don't keep it with the World Cup. But but I think it's a ⁓ is it a game in Atlanta soon though?
Payton Dunn: Well, I if you did I was gonna ask but ⁓ there's one the eighteenth the next Thursday. Yeah.
5: It's a in Atlanta, right? Okay, I heard of that though, because that's you that's hometown, so I heard like yeah, I heard of that though. But I don't keep up with the World Cup. Is America playing? I ain't gonna lie, if America playing, I'll watch though. I'll watch. We won. We won. Okay, cool. Yes, sir, let's go. I'm room for ⁓ I might tune in then.
Payton Dunn: America has played Okay. They played the other night one four to one. Yeah. Now you my last question about personal stuff. I I just thought about this one. being from Georgia, right? You're from Marietta, you know, outside of Atlanta. Where, you know, did you grow up being a fan of?
5: What ⁓ pro team or just like football team? Okay, okay. ⁓ so you know, I grew up and grew up, you know, I always see like, you know, Georgia Bulldogs playing on the TV and I'd be out some of my friends. Georgia always playing teams, you know, I always see him play Arkansas and stuff too, so you that's how I found out about Arkansas. And then ⁓ I was I'm not gonna lie, I was always a Falcons fan, Atlanta Falcons fan, man. Julio Jones, my favorite player forever. He'll be my favorite player forever. I remember they had Devonta Freeman.
Payton Dunn: Recall.
5: And Matt Ryan. That offense was cold. But I I also liked ⁓ Florida State 'cause my cousin had gone there. His name Rashad Green. He played at Florida State. ⁓ and I was also a fan of like ⁓ I like Lamar Jackson at Louisville. And, you know, Tavon Austin, them type of dudes. D'Anthony Thomas, Oregon. So man, I c yeah, came up in that area for real.
Payton Dunn: Yeah, I just didn't know, you know, week three, if it meant more to you, you know, you play in the hometown team, right?
5: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah for sure. Yeah. It means a lot to me, man. Yeah. Playing a whole town team up here. Whole family coming. You know, every time I go back home, man, they be like, Man, y'all, y'all playing Georgia. I'm like, man, yeah, we playing them. Yeah, why tune in, man, watch. So man, that yeah, that's what I'm saying. It's it's cool. It's cool, man. I'm yeah. That's gonna be a good game.
Payton Dunn: Alright, so now we're gonna go to our hot takes and then I have another game for you to play. ⁓ but the first hot take, if you could put a hundred yards on a team this year, who would it be?
5: I go, I'm gonna just start with first game. Start with the first game.
Payton Dunn: I I thought you would say every game. That was what I was getting everyone.
5: I'm that yeah, yeah. I said I'm gonna start with the first game, then it's gonna be you feel me? That's my hot take. Yeah, I'm I'm gonna say that. Yeah, I'm gonna start I'm gonna just start with first game. Yeah, for sure.
Payton Dunn: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And then my next one is 'cause people just I just wanna know, right? Do you like you know, you say you stay to try to you try to stay off the net, but, you know, do you ever see things in the media or keep up with, you know, what's going on during the season or do you just kinda tune it out?
5: Mm. I mean, of course, you know, I got all the social media apps, so you know, if a fan DM me or something, like I might say it or I might not. I'm just not gonna go looking for something. It might just come across my face. But I mean, I'm not gonna lie, if we if we when we winning, probably I probably, you know, they're Arkansas probably be posting, you I'll be hype. But if we losing, I'm I'm gonna be mad. I'm probably not. I'm just locking for the next week.
Payton Dunn: Yeah, that's how I am too. If Arkansas
5: But none of that's you know what I'm saying? None of that stuff like none of that stuff like really get to me though. 'Cause I know, you know, I know what I'm gonna do, I know who I am. I'm just I'm not a wimp or nothing like that, nah.
Payton Dunn: Mm-hmm. I gotcha. So we'll go ahead and transition to the next game I have. Have you heard of the viral game 82-0? Alright, well you're about to hear about it and we're about to play it today. I'm to share the screen and hopefully you're able to see it. If not, then it was a failed attempt. Alright, are you able to see it? Alright, so what we're gonna do is you're gonna get you're gonna get spins and you're gonna try to draft a team that goes 82 and 0.
5: Not having. Okay, cool. Yes, sir.
Payton Dunn: Alright, so this is NBA. I hope you I hoped you watched the NBA growing up, but it does have stats for you if you don't know. We'll give you your first spin here. Okay, Utah in the nineties.
5: Okay. Okay. I'm gonna go, ⁓ wait, do I is there a certain number of people I can go? I can p choose anybody.
Payton Dunn: You can if you get a power forward, you you gotta do five guys, but if you get a power forward, you can't take another power forward. I will tell you John Stockton, I think is he's somewhere on here and he's yeah, he's pretty good every position.
5: I know who that is. I know who that is. Okay, so I gotta fill up every position. I'm like a lot. I'm gonna go I'm gonna go carmalone on this one. I'm gonna go carmalone.
Payton Dunn: I mean, that's a safe bet. Alright, you got another spin here. Ooh, Charlotte in the eighties. Alright, I will tell you, you get one re-team spin and one re-era spin. So like if you don't like Charlotte in the eighties.
5: Well Carmelo. Alright, I'ma go. ⁓ Mussy Bowl's trash. I'll go well, he's not trash, but I'ma go I'ma go
Payton Dunn: You can redo the team if you want. Yeah, I might I don't want Charlotte if I was you like that's just ⁓ look you can get Michael Jordan now.
5: Let me read let me let me read that one. I'm sorry, let me read that. Yeah, Michael Jolie.
Payton Dunn: Right. San Antonio the seventies.
5: Sacramento in the si seventy tenor in the seventies. All right. I'ma I'ma get George going. Billy. I'ma go Billy. I'ma go Billy on this one. Billy. Houston in the eighties.
Payton Dunn: Houston and oof. See now you can't take a center or a power forward. Cause you took him you took Billy.
5: Why? Okay, cool. Okay. So I gotta go point guard or small for it?
Payton Dunn: You can do small forward point guard or shooting guard. Jordan can move over.
5: Hey. John John Lucas.
Payton Dunn: That's pretty good assist right there. Alright, your last guy, shooting guard or a small forward. That one's a pretty easy one, I think.
5: Shooting guard or small for it.
Payton Dunn: Yeah, you got world be free up there at thirty points a game.
5: Okay, yeah, that's easy.
Payton Dunn: Alright, we'll see where you're at. ⁓ sixty four and eighteen.
5: That's about right for the the people. What about Jordan was on the team though, right?
Payton Dunn: Yeah, Jordan. Jordan in the eighties, so Ricky Jordan. Yeah. Well I mean he averaged more points in the eighties.
5: ⁓ rookie Jordan? Okay, that's Okay, cool. Yeah. That was fun though. I get another shot or that's it. ⁓
Payton Dunn: Yeah, I No that that's it. ⁓ You wanna go? We can run it back. You wanna run it back? Okay, I was just gonna do one time if you wanted to run back. I I had to play it like I've played that thing. I've I've played that thing like two hundred times. Like it took me I've done it about six or seven times now. Alright. You you gotta it's like fifty rebounds, thirty assists, and like a hundred and fifteen points.
5: ⁓ no, it's okay, it's okay, okay, okay. Okay, we can run it back one more time. Let me see. You can't go eighty two and ⁓ huh? Okay, let me let me get let me go one more time. ⁓ let me go one more time. Let's see. Let me see.
Payton Dunn: Is it share ⁓ it's not sharing the screen, crap. My bad. I spin it All right. This was your first spin. It was Toronto in the nineties.
5: Toronto in the nineties.
Payton Dunn: I will say the point here is pretty solid.
5: Okay. I'm I'm not gonna lie. Tracy McGretti, come on. We finna go eighty two and ⁓
Payton Dunn: Minnesota in the tent.
5: Beastly deck rose. Okay. C Come on, Carl.
Payton Dunn: Carl Anthony Towns. He just won a championship.
5: That's what I'm saying. Come on, Carl.
Payton Dunn: Chicago and it's
5: ⁓ bear they're gross.
Payton Dunn: No hesitation.
5: Secramento. Okay, now I have to do a Do I have a shooting guard?
Payton Dunn: You do not.
5: George, come on, George. Blake Griffin. What? Man, come on, man. Get off there. They just blew me with that.
Payton Dunn: That's crazy. That team won.
5: Tracy McGrady, Blake Griffin, man.
Payton Dunn: It was like r young Tracy McGrady and you know the game's defense. Alright. I got a couple more questions before I kick you out of here. These are just kinda quick quick hitters here, but if you had to describe your dating life in football terms, how would you do it?
5: I might be playing that. Yeah.
Payton Dunn: Touchdown. I like that one. Eighty five yard tutty. Alright. Well I already already I already asked you that one I guess. ⁓ if you could have an NIL deal with any company, what company would it be?
5: Eighty five hours. A bomb, eighty five yard bomb. Supreme.
Payton Dunn: Okay. ⁓ I mean you kinda answered this one, but I'll ask you again, like, is there anything that you haven't done in Arkansas yet that you're looking forward to doing?
5: Nah, Arkansas got me on my comfort zone. I done did a lot of stuff I don't normally do. Got a guitar right here. I didn't w went fishing. I do all the country outdoors stuff.
Payton Dunn: All right. Well thank you for coming on Sutton. If you wanna tell the fans where they can find you on social media so they can keep up with you f through this next season.
5: Yeah, man. If you're a fan, I appreciate you watching. Y'all can follow me on Instagram at one Sutton and then Twitter. I'll be on Twitter. Sutton five underscore WPS.
Payton Dunn: Heck yeah. All right. Thanks for coming on.
5: Yes, sir. Thank you.
