Zoinks! Did you see that crazy ghost with the red rear?
I'd imagine The Red Guy would scare Shaggy silly if they ever met. For Halloween, BDubs hitches a ride with the Mystery Machine with his trusty candy pail and sporting his best human being costume as he compares not one but TWO spooky 90s Cartoon Network crossover episodes: Johnny Bravo's "Bravo Dooby-Doo" and Cow & Chicken's "Halloween with Dead Ghost Coast to Coast". It's an odd pairing, to say the least, but the exercise will reveal many elements of each that you may not have considered upon watching them for the first time.
Which one will bewitch us with their creepy concepts? Kick back with me in front of the TV under a stormy night - things are about to get spooky.

00:00:00.140 --> 00:00:05.780
Hey, Johnny, check out this crazy pantry. It's
00:00:05.780 --> 00:00:40.929
like it's the Ghostly Gardener. What the? Welcome
00:00:40.929 --> 00:00:43.869
to Checker Childhood, a classic Cartoon Network
00:00:43.869 --> 00:00:46.890
podcast covering many, many years of Cartoon
00:00:46.890 --> 00:01:03.359
Network's history. Good evening, Toon Heads.
00:01:03.460 --> 00:01:06.280
It's your coolest host with the most B -dubs.
00:01:06.379 --> 00:01:09.400
And this is Checker Childhood, a Classic Cartoon
00:01:09.400 --> 00:01:11.260
Network podcast dedicated to all things animation
00:01:11.260 --> 00:01:14.840
from the 1990s and early 2000s. Today, we're
00:01:14.840 --> 00:01:17.340
celebrating spooky season with our first foray
00:01:17.340 --> 00:01:20.099
into two cartoon cartoons monster mashed into
00:01:20.099 --> 00:01:24.019
two other cartoons. How fun is that? When digging
00:01:24.019 --> 00:01:25.560
through the vault of Classic Cartoon Network.
00:01:26.079 --> 00:01:28.659
I found two episodes that I both remember vividly
00:01:28.659 --> 00:01:31.060
watching around Halloween time back in 1997,
00:01:31.420 --> 00:01:34.180
or at least around that year. Bravo Doobie Doo
00:01:34.180 --> 00:01:37.379
from Johnny Bravo Show and Halloween with Dead
00:01:37.379 --> 00:01:39.939
Ghost Coast to Coast from Cow and Chicken, respectively.
00:01:40.840 --> 00:01:43.599
Like our previous comparison episodes, this will
00:01:43.599 --> 00:01:46.299
take multiple factors into consideration in determining
00:01:46.299 --> 00:01:49.280
which is the better episode we're viewing. Or,
00:01:49.439 --> 00:01:52.060
if you're a fan old enough to remember, revisiting
00:01:52.060 --> 00:01:54.620
once more. Let's size up the scares, shall we?
00:01:59.099 --> 00:02:03.200
Wait a minute. Why'd the lights go out? Well,
00:02:03.260 --> 00:02:06.620
you can't see me anyways, but let me get a flashlight
00:02:06.620 --> 00:02:09.439
to set the mood so I can read my notes in this
00:02:09.439 --> 00:02:14.580
dark, ominous bedroom of mine. So the episode
00:02:14.580 --> 00:02:18.639
info for these two episodes are as follows. The
00:02:18.639 --> 00:02:22.259
air date for Bravo Doobie Doo is July 21st, 1997.
00:02:23.360 --> 00:02:25.639
while the air date for Halloween with Dead Ghost
00:02:25.639 --> 00:02:29.060
Coast to Coast was originally October 31st, 1997,
00:02:29.479 --> 00:02:32.500
but was later pushed to January 20th, 1998 due
00:02:32.500 --> 00:02:35.419
to delays with production. Bravo Doobie Doo was
00:02:35.419 --> 00:02:38.199
written by Michael Ryan, while Halloween with
00:02:38.199 --> 00:02:40.340
Dead Ghost Coast to Coast was written by Richard
00:02:40.340 --> 00:02:43.539
Purcell. Bravo Doobie Doo was directed by John
00:02:43.539 --> 00:02:46.419
McIntyre, of Kitchen Casanova fame, actually.
00:02:47.060 --> 00:02:50.360
And, as you'd expect, Halloween with Dead Ghost
00:02:50.360 --> 00:02:52.909
Coast to Coast from Cow and Chicken was directed
00:02:52.909 --> 00:02:55.949
by David Fies, with the animation being directed
00:02:55.949 --> 00:02:59.810
by Robert Alvarez. So let's compare and contrast
00:02:59.810 --> 00:03:02.370
through some categories that I thought were fitting
00:03:02.370 --> 00:03:05.870
for these episodes. Let's begin with Story, the
00:03:05.870 --> 00:03:08.629
most obvious one. In the beginning of Bravo Doobie
00:03:08.629 --> 00:03:11.409
Doo, Johnny's car breaks down while on his way
00:03:11.409 --> 00:03:14.110
to visit his Aunt Jebedissa, who lives in a spooky
00:03:14.110 --> 00:03:18.050
Victorian house past the haunted woods. Luckily,
00:03:18.289 --> 00:03:21.659
Johnny isn't completely stranded. A particular
00:03:21.659 --> 00:03:25.419
groovy van stops by to offer him a lift. It's
00:03:25.419 --> 00:03:27.360
none other than the Scooby -Doo gang, who just
00:03:27.360 --> 00:03:29.419
happen to be looking for a new mystery to solve.
00:03:30.840 --> 00:03:34.099
Hi there. My car just broke down and I was wondering
00:03:34.099 --> 00:03:37.719
if you guys could give me a lift. I'm on my way
00:03:37.719 --> 00:03:39.840
to visit my Aunt Jebediza and I'd sure hate to
00:03:39.840 --> 00:03:48.099
be late. She lives in this spooky house up on
00:03:48.099 --> 00:03:55.669
Widow's Peak. Johnny hops in the van between
00:03:55.669 --> 00:03:58.430
Velma and Daphne, of course, as the group motors
00:03:58.430 --> 00:04:00.409
to the top of the hill where they'll investigate
00:04:00.409 --> 00:04:03.090
the relative's disappearance. After some bare
00:04:03.090 --> 00:04:05.610
-bones searching, Shaggy opens a broom closet,
00:04:05.909 --> 00:04:08.710
unleashing a creepy gardener glowing in yellow
00:04:08.710 --> 00:04:11.210
and white who chases the gang until they lose
00:04:11.210 --> 00:04:14.509
him for the moment. Some typical Scooby -Doo
00:04:14.509 --> 00:04:18.300
hijinks then ensue. including more creepy closet
00:04:18.300 --> 00:04:21.000
opening, hiding behind curtains, and of course,
00:04:21.019 --> 00:04:24.399
a typical 60s rock and roll hallway montage until
00:04:24.399 --> 00:04:27.060
Johnny inadvertently catches the ghost in his
00:04:27.060 --> 00:04:30.100
tracks. Don't worry, Dad. Help is on the way.
00:04:31.100 --> 00:04:36.199
Good work, gang. We captured the ghost. After
00:04:36.199 --> 00:04:39.860
a rather hilarious unmasking parody, the culprit
00:04:39.860 --> 00:04:44.180
is revealed to be none other than Aunt Jebedissa
00:04:44.180 --> 00:04:50.170
herself. Apparently, she hates Johnny and thought
00:04:50.170 --> 00:04:52.829
she could scare him away from visiting. Oddly
00:04:52.829 --> 00:04:54.870
enough, the Scooby -Doo gang apologizes to the
00:04:54.870 --> 00:04:57.629
aunt and offers to make it up to her by ditching
00:04:57.629 --> 00:04:59.889
Johnny Bravo back in the woods where they first
00:04:59.889 --> 00:05:03.110
found him. Not a moment sooner, Speed Buggy,
00:05:03.230 --> 00:05:05.709
who you may recognize from the Hanna -Barbera
00:05:05.709 --> 00:05:08.170
lexicon, offers him a ride after the mystery
00:05:08.170 --> 00:05:21.470
machine leaves. Hey, pal, hop in. I'll give you
00:05:21.470 --> 00:05:26.310
a lift. And believe it or not, that's the end
00:05:26.310 --> 00:05:29.389
of the episode. Pretty quick. Likewise, Cow and
00:05:29.389 --> 00:05:31.389
Chicken's another quick episode. Cow and Chicken
00:05:31.389 --> 00:05:33.970
begins watching a horror film in the living room
00:05:33.970 --> 00:05:36.850
involving sheep zombies who try to kill their
00:05:36.850 --> 00:05:40.930
farmers. Cow is shaking in her hooves while Chicken
00:05:40.930 --> 00:05:44.970
remains unaffected. Just then, the TV crossfades
00:05:44.970 --> 00:05:47.389
to Dead Ghost Coast to Coast, where the red guy
00:05:47.389 --> 00:05:49.730
in a space ghost getup reveals he has a Halloween
00:05:49.730 --> 00:05:52.329
hotline to call if viewers don't know what to
00:05:52.329 --> 00:05:54.730
be for the holiday. At the exorbitant rate of
00:05:54.730 --> 00:06:00.269
$3 .99 per second, I might add. Hello! Oh, you're
00:06:00.269 --> 00:06:06.250
a human being! Then dress as a chicken! You're
00:06:06.250 --> 00:06:09.769
a chicken! Dress as a human being! One caller
00:06:09.769 --> 00:06:12.279
is given the suggestion to be a chicken. While
00:06:12.279 --> 00:06:14.399
Chicken is suggested to dress as a human being,
00:06:14.540 --> 00:06:17.959
because apparently the red guy can see them through
00:06:17.959 --> 00:06:21.920
the TV somehow? Excited, the siblings rush into
00:06:21.920 --> 00:06:23.720
their parents' room and rummage through their
00:06:23.720 --> 00:06:25.579
dressers to put on some of their parents' clothing.
00:06:26.139 --> 00:06:29.560
They look quite convincing as adults. Maybe a
00:06:29.560 --> 00:06:33.060
little too convincing. With their costumes completed,
00:06:33.459 --> 00:06:35.579
Cow and Chicken head to the streets for the Halloween
00:06:35.579 --> 00:06:38.500
candy haul. The first house's resident shouts
00:06:38.500 --> 00:06:40.860
at Cow and Chicken, appalled that a grown man
00:06:40.860 --> 00:06:42.800
and woman are out trick -or -treating on Halloween
00:06:42.800 --> 00:06:46.199
night, while the second one's house's emo teenager
00:06:46.199 --> 00:06:49.139
denies them candy because they aren't in costume
00:06:49.139 --> 00:06:51.060
like he was forced to wear when he was little.
00:06:51.939 --> 00:06:55.480
Then comes the third house. A man in an ill -fitting
00:06:55.480 --> 00:06:57.439
business suit thinks Cow and Chicken have got
00:06:57.439 --> 00:07:00.699
spunk for daring to break tradition and want
00:07:00.699 --> 00:07:03.160
to set up a business meeting with them the next
00:07:03.160 --> 00:07:06.660
day. The man flings business cards at them as
00:07:06.660 --> 00:07:08.839
his treadmill entrance retracts him back into
00:07:08.839 --> 00:07:11.860
his mansion. Myth that they have failed to gain
00:07:11.860 --> 00:07:15.500
a single piece of candy, Chicken leads the duo
00:07:15.500 --> 00:07:19.360
to the next house, WAXX radio station, where
00:07:19.360 --> 00:07:21.620
Dead Ghost repels them for having the nerve to
00:07:21.620 --> 00:07:25.439
show up. Chicken snaps, shredding his costume
00:07:25.439 --> 00:07:27.540
and prepares to throw a massive brick at Dead
00:07:27.540 --> 00:07:41.259
Ghost's window. So, you're not a grown -up after
00:07:41.259 --> 00:07:44.519
all. You're a juvenile chicken delinquent! Well,
00:07:44.879 --> 00:07:49.079
maybe a little discipline will stop your masquerading
00:07:49.079 --> 00:07:53.860
ways! Dead Ghost realizes he's not an adult after
00:07:53.860 --> 00:07:56.540
all, and instead snatches him to force -feed
00:07:56.540 --> 00:08:00.040
him soap slash soup. Cow quickly changes into
00:08:00.040 --> 00:08:03.120
her super -cow alter -ego, and the two take on
00:08:03.120 --> 00:08:05.500
the pathetic excuse of a superhero with feathers,
00:08:05.620 --> 00:08:10.319
milk, and eggs. Defeated and humiliated, Dead
00:08:10.319 --> 00:08:12.920
Ghost offers to make it up to them. In the next
00:08:12.920 --> 00:08:15.300
scene, Cow and Chicken finally get to have their
00:08:15.300 --> 00:08:17.300
proper trick -or -treat moment they've been waiting
00:08:17.300 --> 00:08:20.399
for all night and celebrate by chowing down on
00:08:20.399 --> 00:08:22.800
candy in the next field over under a crescent
00:08:22.800 --> 00:08:38.710
moon. I'd say between these two stories, it's
00:08:38.710 --> 00:08:41.450
hard to tell which one is better. I really like
00:08:41.450 --> 00:08:44.990
the pacing of the plot for Brow Doobie Doo. It's
00:08:44.990 --> 00:08:47.389
got a lot going for it. But Cow and Chicken is
00:08:47.389 --> 00:08:50.070
very traditional Halloween, and having them dress
00:08:50.070 --> 00:08:53.250
as humans is quite an unexpected surprise, as
00:08:53.250 --> 00:08:55.809
well as the red guy dressing up as dead ghosts.
00:08:56.350 --> 00:08:59.870
So I'm going to give it a tie. I like them both
00:08:59.870 --> 00:09:06.620
for their theming, especially. Moving on to Category
00:09:06.620 --> 00:09:09.360
2, we have villains. For Bravo Doobie Doo, of
00:09:09.360 --> 00:09:11.879
course, we have the ghostly gardener, who is
00:09:11.879 --> 00:09:15.299
played by Aunt Jebedissa. She uses a rake, hoe,
00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:17.879
weed whacker, and wheelbarrow all to chase and
00:09:17.879 --> 00:09:20.080
terrorize Johnny and the Scooby Doo gang all
00:09:20.080 --> 00:09:22.399
around her mansion. She's fairly frightening
00:09:22.399 --> 00:09:25.419
to look at, and I'd say is on par with any ghoul
00:09:25.419 --> 00:09:28.019
from the original or remake Scooby Doo series.
00:09:28.980 --> 00:09:32.460
Definitely an excellent character design. Meanwhile...
00:09:32.649 --> 00:09:35.110
Dead Ghost seems more like a parody than an homage
00:09:35.110 --> 00:09:38.350
to Space Ghost. Red Guy dons the outfit fine
00:09:38.350 --> 00:09:41.889
enough, but some details are missing and instead
00:09:41.889 --> 00:09:45.590
has Dead Ghost written on his white spandex just
00:09:45.590 --> 00:09:47.269
in case the viewer didn't get the memo about
00:09:47.269 --> 00:09:50.409
his outfit. While I thought it was amusing, the
00:09:50.409 --> 00:09:52.549
Red Guy had to tape his horns back to make himself
00:09:52.549 --> 00:09:55.889
look convincing as Space Ghost. The outfit itself
00:09:55.889 --> 00:09:59.679
just barely holds up. He didn't even have the
00:09:59.679 --> 00:10:02.299
red communication emblem or zap anyone with his
00:10:02.299 --> 00:10:07.000
armbands, so lame. I think it's easy to see which
00:10:07.000 --> 00:10:09.259
one wins this category. I'm going to give it
00:10:09.259 --> 00:10:11.700
to the Ghostly Gardener from Bravo Doobie Doo.
00:10:11.960 --> 00:10:14.559
So that brings our total for Johnny Bravo, number
00:10:14.559 --> 00:10:27.580
two, Cow and Chicken won. Well, that's a fine
00:10:27.580 --> 00:10:30.120
kettle of fish. For Category 3, we have the spooky
00:10:30.120 --> 00:10:33.460
theme, where Bravo Doobie Doo revolves around
00:10:33.460 --> 00:10:36.860
a haunted house on a stormy night. Pretty straightforward
00:10:36.860 --> 00:10:41.220
textbook. Haunted Halloween tropes. It's typical
00:10:41.220 --> 00:10:43.799
Scooby Doo fare, but the exception for Johnny
00:10:43.799 --> 00:10:46.039
Bravo's universe, so it makes it a little bit
00:10:46.039 --> 00:10:48.799
more interesting that it deviates from the usual
00:10:48.799 --> 00:10:52.289
daytime of Errand City on the show. Nothing too
00:10:52.289 --> 00:10:54.610
scary here outside of the atmosphere or really
00:10:54.610 --> 00:10:56.710
the main villain lurking in the Victoria Mansion,
00:10:57.009 --> 00:10:59.850
but I'd say these elements are enough to set
00:10:59.850 --> 00:11:02.970
the tone for the episode and reel you in. As
00:11:02.970 --> 00:11:05.330
for the Cow and Chicken episode, Halloween with
00:11:05.330 --> 00:11:07.629
Dead Ghosts Coast to Coast, it doesn't get any
00:11:07.629 --> 00:11:10.169
spookier than Halloween, though I'd love to see
00:11:10.169 --> 00:11:12.210
dozens of kids trick -or -treating in the backgrounds
00:11:12.210 --> 00:11:14.370
while Cow and Chicken are searching for houses
00:11:14.370 --> 00:11:17.250
to collect their candy. I enjoyed it being a
00:11:17.250 --> 00:11:20.159
holiday episode proper. Dead Ghost slash the
00:11:20.159 --> 00:11:22.220
Red Guy unintentionally lends himself to the
00:11:22.220 --> 00:11:24.919
theme too, as he's both portraying a devil and
00:11:24.919 --> 00:11:27.620
a ghost. So I got to give him points for that.
00:11:28.019 --> 00:11:30.820
Plus there's the Farm Zombies film playing at
00:11:30.820 --> 00:11:33.019
his TV station for Cow and Chicken to be scared
00:11:33.019 --> 00:11:35.700
of. So I appreciate the nod to horror movie marathons
00:11:35.700 --> 00:11:38.399
too that many of us like to enjoy during the
00:11:38.399 --> 00:11:41.480
holidays. I'm going to say between these two,
00:11:41.720 --> 00:11:45.200
I'm going to give it to Halloween with Dead Ghost
00:11:45.200 --> 00:11:48.120
Coast to Coast. So that brings the total Johnny
00:11:48.120 --> 00:11:52.340
Bravo 2, Cow and Chicken 2. I just like the Halloween
00:11:52.340 --> 00:11:54.700
theming a little bit more. And Bravo Doobie Doo
00:11:54.700 --> 00:11:59.679
is more like bare bones spookiness. I wonder
00:11:59.679 --> 00:12:06.120
who lives here. Yes. Category number four, we
00:12:06.120 --> 00:12:09.460
have effectiveness of the crossover. I'd say
00:12:09.460 --> 00:12:12.580
after viewing both episodes, the Bravo Doobie
00:12:12.580 --> 00:12:16.070
Doo one is very effective. It just seems spot
00:12:16.070 --> 00:12:18.870
on with how the character designs are, the voice
00:12:18.870 --> 00:12:22.570
acting is. Even the silly plot and the tropes
00:12:22.570 --> 00:12:25.649
that you all know from Scooby -Doo, if you've
00:12:25.649 --> 00:12:27.509
seen it on Cartoon Network as well, they're all
00:12:27.509 --> 00:12:31.029
here. Johnny Bravo just was seamlessly cut and
00:12:31.029 --> 00:12:33.230
paste into a Scooby -Doo episode and didn't even
00:12:33.230 --> 00:12:36.070
skip a beat. So I really love how just effortless
00:12:36.070 --> 00:12:39.230
this episode feels for the crossover. There's
00:12:39.230 --> 00:12:42.230
no friction. There's no weird dialogue that seems
00:12:42.230 --> 00:12:46.500
conflicting. So, yeah. It's really good. Conversely,
00:12:46.500 --> 00:12:48.460
I'd say that Halloween with Dead Ghost Coast
00:12:48.460 --> 00:12:51.559
to Coast is not that effective. I mean, it's
00:12:51.559 --> 00:12:54.059
got good Halloween theming and all, but if we're
00:12:54.059 --> 00:12:56.500
talking about how it represents Space Ghost Coast
00:12:56.500 --> 00:12:59.120
to Coast, it doesn't really do it for me. And
00:12:59.120 --> 00:13:02.139
I was a fan of it when I watched it growing up.
00:13:02.659 --> 00:13:06.919
And Red Guy's costume just doesn't really fit
00:13:06.919 --> 00:13:10.320
accurately to Space Ghost. That kind of bothers
00:13:10.320 --> 00:13:13.539
me a bit. And same with the studio, too. It just
00:13:13.539 --> 00:13:16.980
looks like a oversimplification of his studio
00:13:16.980 --> 00:13:20.460
from the actual show. But I do like there's a
00:13:20.460 --> 00:13:23.179
bug sitting there at his own little kiosk at
00:13:23.179 --> 00:13:26.340
Dead Ghost Coast to Coast Studio, who's representing
00:13:26.340 --> 00:13:28.679
either Zorak or Lokar from the original source
00:13:28.679 --> 00:13:31.500
material. So I got to give it at least a little
00:13:31.500 --> 00:13:35.299
credit for doing something. But either way, I
00:13:35.299 --> 00:13:37.139
wish the use of the other show's iconography
00:13:37.139 --> 00:13:39.139
was just far more prominent than what they gave
00:13:39.139 --> 00:13:41.990
us. And for that reason, I'm going to give the
00:13:41.990 --> 00:13:44.350
point to Bravo Doobie Doo, bringing the total
00:13:44.350 --> 00:13:48.610
for Johnny Bravo 3 and Cow and Chicken 2. Moving
00:13:48.610 --> 00:13:50.350
on, we're going to talk about the music real
00:13:50.350 --> 00:13:54.409
quick. I'd say that the soundtrack that's being
00:13:54.409 --> 00:13:57.929
used in Bravo Doobie Doo is pretty catchy, pretty
00:13:57.929 --> 00:14:02.610
typical of Scooby Doo. It's got a couple of jingles
00:14:02.610 --> 00:14:07.129
from Johnny Bravo's show mixed in. And I'd say
00:14:07.129 --> 00:14:10.049
like the 50s music rockabilly stuff from Johnny
00:14:10.049 --> 00:14:12.889
Bravo blends pretty well with the groovy 60s
00:14:12.889 --> 00:14:15.470
music that you would hear in typical Scooby -Doo
00:14:15.470 --> 00:14:18.370
episodes. I mean, there's plenty of psychedelic
00:14:18.370 --> 00:14:21.929
guitar riffs. There's little curiosity jingles
00:14:21.929 --> 00:14:25.429
and stingers whenever villains come out. It's
00:14:25.429 --> 00:14:29.509
really well seasoned with these musical accents,
00:14:29.669 --> 00:14:33.580
I'd say. So I liked it. As for Halloween of Dead
00:14:33.580 --> 00:14:36.000
Ghost Coast to Coast, again, it doesn't really
00:14:36.000 --> 00:14:38.460
do much to elevate the typical Cow and Chicken
00:14:38.460 --> 00:14:42.679
formula. You hear the standard suburban instrumentals
00:14:42.679 --> 00:14:44.480
and dramatic stingers that you hear in other
00:14:44.480 --> 00:14:46.100
Cow and Chicken episodes, but you don't really
00:14:46.100 --> 00:14:50.960
get much Halloween -specific music. And I wish
00:14:50.960 --> 00:14:53.860
they just did a little bit more in terms of bringing
00:14:53.860 --> 00:14:59.509
the spooky atmosphere in. To make us really feel
00:14:59.509 --> 00:15:01.350
like it's a Halloween episode, rather than just
00:15:01.350 --> 00:15:03.669
looking at the title card and getting the memo.
00:15:04.570 --> 00:15:06.690
It could have benefited from on -theme music,
00:15:06.909 --> 00:15:09.070
especially during the trick -or -treat scenes,
00:15:09.129 --> 00:15:11.009
so at least we can transition from the normal
00:15:11.009 --> 00:15:14.809
suburban music to the holiday theme when they're
00:15:14.809 --> 00:15:18.990
out and about town. So, yeah. Johnny Bravo, of
00:15:18.990 --> 00:15:20.970
course, gets the point again here, bringing the
00:15:20.970 --> 00:15:23.889
total for Johnny Bravo 4 and Cow and Chicken
00:15:23.889 --> 00:15:27.940
2. Next up, we have quotes. And there's quite
00:15:27.940 --> 00:15:30.039
a bit in both of these, but I just picked a few
00:15:30.039 --> 00:15:32.259
highlights that really stood out with me upon
00:15:32.259 --> 00:15:35.059
watching both of these. One of the quotes that
00:15:35.059 --> 00:15:42.840
I found pretty funny is when Velma says, Clearly
00:15:42.840 --> 00:15:47.059
that was for the animators and the older audience
00:15:47.059 --> 00:15:52.940
watching. And then of course you got, Which Velma
00:15:52.940 --> 00:15:55.620
says. And then Johnny responds. My glasses. I
00:15:55.620 --> 00:15:57.980
can't be seen without my glasses. And they do
00:15:57.980 --> 00:15:59.679
like a little switcheroo with their glasses,
00:15:59.759 --> 00:16:03.379
which I think is an effective joke overall. And
00:16:03.379 --> 00:16:06.600
then, of course, Johnny Bravo says. Jinkies.
00:16:07.080 --> 00:16:09.000
Jinkies. Isn't that a breakfast cereal or something?
00:16:09.259 --> 00:16:12.000
Made me think of Wheaties and just all the crazy
00:16:12.000 --> 00:16:15.399
cereals that were abound on 90s TV commercials.
00:16:15.679 --> 00:16:19.700
So that was a fun callback. As for Dead Ghost
00:16:19.700 --> 00:16:23.039
Coast to Coast. We have Chicken saying most of
00:16:23.039 --> 00:16:26.200
these, but the first one he says is. First, I
00:16:26.200 --> 00:16:30.879
will need human underwears. I'm allergic to prey.
00:16:31.759 --> 00:16:34.179
And this is a reference to Chicken rummaging
00:16:34.179 --> 00:16:36.700
through his dad's dresser to look for clothes
00:16:36.700 --> 00:16:39.879
to dress up as his dad for Halloween. And he
00:16:39.879 --> 00:16:42.580
pulls out some briefs and then he pulls out some.
00:16:43.080 --> 00:16:45.519
really garish looking green and pink bloomers,
00:16:45.559 --> 00:16:47.279
which I don't even know why those are in there
00:16:47.279 --> 00:16:49.659
in the first place, but it, the quote definitely
00:16:49.659 --> 00:16:53.220
solidified the imagery in the joke. Well, uh,
00:16:53.279 --> 00:17:03.139
second up we have, Oh boy. If I had a dollar
00:17:03.139 --> 00:17:04.920
every time I wanted to say that in real life,
00:17:05.000 --> 00:17:07.720
it's, it seems fitting too, because, uh, all
00:17:07.720 --> 00:17:09.619
he got was business cards from that Ted Turner
00:17:09.619 --> 00:17:12.890
knockoff in the episode. And, Rightfully so.
00:17:12.990 --> 00:17:14.730
He's a kid. He's trick or treating. He wants
00:17:14.730 --> 00:17:18.029
candy. Give him some candy. And lastly, this
00:17:18.029 --> 00:17:21.329
one I got from Dead Ghost himself. He mentions
00:17:21.329 --> 00:17:23.569
this when he opens the door to Cow and Chicken
00:17:23.569 --> 00:17:27.529
in costume. Well, if it is an ultra normal man,
00:17:27.809 --> 00:17:30.829
an ultra normal woman, the unemployment office
00:17:30.829 --> 00:17:33.730
is around the corner. And then slams the door
00:17:33.730 --> 00:17:37.289
shut. I mean, that was pretty rough for them
00:17:37.289 --> 00:17:39.650
considering he caused the problem that Cow and
00:17:39.650 --> 00:17:42.839
Chicken experienced with. you know, not being
00:17:42.839 --> 00:17:46.119
recognized as trick -or -treaters. So that one
00:17:46.119 --> 00:17:48.980
stung a little bit deeper than the others. In
00:17:48.980 --> 00:17:53.519
terms of who had the better quotes, I'm, oh,
00:17:53.720 --> 00:17:56.599
it's a tough one. I think I'm going to give it
00:17:56.599 --> 00:17:58.839
to Halloween of Dead Ghost Coast to Coast because
00:17:58.839 --> 00:18:02.559
they're slightly more edgy and the Halloween
00:18:02.559 --> 00:18:05.460
stuff is pretty fun. I mean, I'm allergic to
00:18:05.460 --> 00:18:08.319
plaid, particularly hits with me because I'm
00:18:08.319 --> 00:18:13.660
used to wearing plaid shirts a lot. So I just
00:18:13.660 --> 00:18:17.500
yeah, I find them more goofy and off kilter than
00:18:17.500 --> 00:18:21.619
the Johnny Bravo ones, which just seem more standard
00:18:21.619 --> 00:18:25.299
with their formula, which is OK. With that extra
00:18:25.299 --> 00:18:27.099
point for Dead Ghost Coast to Coast, we have
00:18:27.099 --> 00:18:29.319
Johnny Bravo with four and Cow and Chicken with
00:18:29.319 --> 00:18:33.259
three. And as a final bonus category, would you
00:18:33.259 --> 00:18:36.920
say either are rewatchable today? For Bravo,
00:18:36.960 --> 00:18:40.089
do we do? I'd say so. I mean, if you love Scooby
00:18:40.089 --> 00:18:42.589
-Doo or Johnny Bravo in general, it's a fun,
00:18:42.589 --> 00:18:46.029
faithful crossover for both shows. The ending
00:18:46.029 --> 00:18:49.390
is a bit, eh, like kind of shoehorned in. And
00:18:49.390 --> 00:18:52.049
I didn't really like how Aunt Jebedissa rallied
00:18:52.049 --> 00:18:54.650
the Scooby -Doo gang to turn on Johnny. That
00:18:54.650 --> 00:18:56.789
never sat well with me even as a kid. But I'd
00:18:56.789 --> 00:18:59.069
say the rest of the adventure is very much on
00:18:59.069 --> 00:19:02.609
point. It's tight. It's got gags. It's got music.
00:19:02.710 --> 00:19:04.190
It's got everything you want from Scooby -Doo.
00:19:04.410 --> 00:19:08.130
It's got Johnny's silly. sometimes even offensive
00:19:08.130 --> 00:19:11.930
pickup lines, and that's all you can ask for
00:19:11.930 --> 00:19:15.230
for both shows. Just simply putting one and one
00:19:15.230 --> 00:19:18.690
together. As for Cow and Chicken with Dead Ghost
00:19:18.690 --> 00:19:23.190
Coast to Coast, I mean, it's okay, but it's not
00:19:23.190 --> 00:19:26.109
as fun as I originally remember it being when
00:19:26.109 --> 00:19:29.150
I first watched it. Everyone looks a bit off
00:19:29.150 --> 00:19:31.710
in their costumes, particularly, well, I mean,
00:19:31.750 --> 00:19:33.250
Cow Chicken, the red guy, no one else dresses
00:19:33.250 --> 00:19:36.259
up here. So it isn't something I look forward
00:19:36.259 --> 00:19:40.079
to viewing every Halloween or even in general,
00:19:40.140 --> 00:19:42.539
unless I'm just feeling nostalgic for Cow and
00:19:42.539 --> 00:19:45.440
Chicken. But if it's included in a Cartoon Network
00:19:45.440 --> 00:19:48.720
themed marathon, I'd probably sit through it
00:19:48.720 --> 00:19:52.819
at the very least. And I think considering my
00:19:52.819 --> 00:19:55.279
enthusiasm is pretty apparent, I'm going to give
00:19:55.279 --> 00:19:57.799
the point to Johnny Bravo. And that brings the
00:19:57.799 --> 00:20:01.000
grand total for Johnny Bravo 5, Cow and Chicken
00:20:01.000 --> 00:20:05.009
3, meaning... If you're going by points, Bravo
00:20:05.009 --> 00:20:08.130
Doobie Doo is the winner of the spooky crossover
00:20:08.130 --> 00:20:11.829
comparison episodes. Well, Mr. Bravo, I guess
00:20:11.829 --> 00:20:16.049
that leaves us with the kitchen. Come on. Why
00:20:16.049 --> 00:20:18.549
do I have to get stuck with Jughead? And I'd
00:20:18.549 --> 00:20:22.049
say it's overall the better episode, too. It
00:20:22.049 --> 00:20:24.329
came down to the crossover effectiveness and
00:20:24.329 --> 00:20:26.869
the music for me. And while it may not necessarily
00:20:26.869 --> 00:20:30.119
be a Halloween episode per se. The beauty of
00:20:30.119 --> 00:20:32.299
this one is that you can watch it any time of
00:20:32.299 --> 00:20:35.799
the year and still have a lot of fun. The Cow
00:20:35.799 --> 00:20:37.799
and Chicken one, however, is a bit more specific.
00:20:38.019 --> 00:20:41.500
So unless you're a diehard fan of the show or
00:20:41.500 --> 00:20:43.579
just love seeing Space Ghost Coast to Coast references
00:20:43.579 --> 00:20:47.119
and pop culture TV out of the blue, it serves
00:20:47.119 --> 00:20:50.420
a very niche purpose. How about you, Toon Heads?
00:20:50.839 --> 00:20:53.359
How do these two spooky episodes stack up to
00:20:53.359 --> 00:20:56.099
you? Do you have another episode in mind from
00:20:56.099 --> 00:20:57.660
Cartoon Network that could blow the two out of
00:20:57.660 --> 00:21:04.700
the water? Let me know. Here are my memories
00:21:04.700 --> 00:21:10.839
of both Halloween crossovers growing up. I remember
00:21:10.839 --> 00:21:12.900
tuning into both when they first premiered back
00:21:12.900 --> 00:21:16.039
in the late 90s. It was a big deal to me that
00:21:16.039 --> 00:21:18.900
Space Ghost was in an episode since I love staying
00:21:18.900 --> 00:21:20.720
up late to watch this coast -to -coast show years
00:21:20.720 --> 00:21:23.799
prior. I remember just hating how Red Guy set
00:21:23.799 --> 00:21:26.259
up Cow and Chicken for failure by giving them
00:21:26.259 --> 00:21:28.539
terrible costume suggestions and then denying
00:21:28.539 --> 00:21:30.740
them candy after all the effort they went through
00:21:30.740 --> 00:21:33.619
to get it. Very much like how the farm duo got
00:21:33.619 --> 00:21:36.980
their revenge at the TV station. I was right
00:21:36.980 --> 00:21:39.079
alongside them in my bedroom, punching pillows
00:21:39.079 --> 00:21:41.140
and throwing feathers as if I was getting into
00:21:41.140 --> 00:21:44.640
the action too. When I watched Bravo Doobie Doo,
00:21:44.700 --> 00:21:47.460
however, I was a bit confused at first because
00:21:47.460 --> 00:21:49.339
I didn't understand why Scooby Doo was in the
00:21:49.339 --> 00:21:52.000
show, but... I went along for the ride like Johnny
00:21:52.000 --> 00:21:54.420
Bravo did. My siblings actually tuned in with
00:21:54.420 --> 00:21:56.880
me too. And we loved the laughs that Johnny's
00:21:56.880 --> 00:21:59.900
jokes gave us along with how shaggy he and Scooby
00:21:59.900 --> 00:22:02.740
thwarted the ghost with their silly antics. Uh,
00:22:02.819 --> 00:22:05.259
even when Johnny just literally fell from the
00:22:05.259 --> 00:22:07.380
chandelier to trap him, that was, that was unexpected,
00:22:07.460 --> 00:22:10.529
but fun. And then, of course, the apple core
00:22:10.529 --> 00:22:13.890
Baltimore, who's your friend, me, quote, particularly
00:22:13.890 --> 00:22:16.210
stuck with us three, as we'd often repeat it
00:22:16.210 --> 00:22:18.690
to annoy each other at home or even whenever
00:22:18.690 --> 00:22:20.529
we were just slicing apples for a snack around
00:22:20.529 --> 00:22:23.890
the house. The same year, I should have paid
00:22:23.890 --> 00:22:26.269
attention to Cow and Chicken's warning. I actually
00:22:26.269 --> 00:22:29.109
had the bright idea to dress up as Dexter from
00:22:29.109 --> 00:22:32.519
Dexter's Lab in his... submarine outfit from
00:22:32.519 --> 00:22:35.420
season two's episode ocean of commotion which
00:22:35.420 --> 00:22:38.619
is very specific and nobody would ever get it
00:22:38.619 --> 00:22:41.319
uh basically he was just wearing a purple zip
00:22:41.319 --> 00:22:46.000
-up fleece and uh yellow like jacusto beanie
00:22:46.000 --> 00:22:48.839
uh with his glasses and i ended up wearing the
00:22:48.839 --> 00:22:51.819
costume for both trick -or -treating and my halloween
00:22:51.819 --> 00:22:53.700
troop meeting and boy scouts back when i was
00:22:53.700 --> 00:22:56.180
in that ended up being the worst halloween in
00:22:56.180 --> 00:23:00.210
my life sad to say instead of candy I got made
00:23:00.210 --> 00:23:02.509
fun of constantly for just looking too ordinary
00:23:02.509 --> 00:23:05.710
compared to the other kids, so I definitely felt
00:23:05.710 --> 00:23:07.970
Chicken's anguish when he tore off his dad costume
00:23:07.970 --> 00:23:11.750
in frustration for not getting any candy. Thankfully,
00:23:11.869 --> 00:23:13.930
though, I've had better Halloween since then,
00:23:14.029 --> 00:23:16.769
but the memory still lingers once in a while
00:23:16.769 --> 00:23:19.250
whenever I think about the holiday season. At
00:23:19.250 --> 00:23:20.950
least I'm dressed as something far more fun this
00:23:20.950 --> 00:23:29.339
year. So with everything being said in this episode
00:23:29.339 --> 00:23:32.799
today, why exactly do crossover episodes matter?
00:23:33.980 --> 00:23:36.440
Crossovers are a dime a dozen in modern day children's
00:23:36.440 --> 00:23:39.579
media. You can spot them practically anywhere
00:23:39.579 --> 00:23:42.380
and everywhere through different streaming services
00:23:42.380 --> 00:23:46.640
and even just shoved in episodes of popular TV
00:23:46.640 --> 00:23:48.900
shows just to get attention and a little bit
00:23:48.900 --> 00:23:52.619
of nostalgia. But back then, back when it was
00:23:52.619 --> 00:23:54.900
just appointment television, when we didn't really
00:23:54.900 --> 00:24:00.859
have... streaming or TiVo or barely VCRs. It
00:24:00.859 --> 00:24:02.680
was a rare treat whenever we got to see one on
00:24:02.680 --> 00:24:06.460
TV. Starting back in the late 80s, early 90s
00:24:06.460 --> 00:24:08.799
with the Jetsons meet the Flintstones, Hanna
00:24:08.799 --> 00:24:11.180
-Barbera launched a TV2 novelty by experimenting
00:24:11.180 --> 00:24:13.839
with two seemingly unrelated worlds colliding,
00:24:13.880 --> 00:24:16.940
both from the past and the future. And in these
00:24:16.940 --> 00:24:20.099
episodes, we get to witness the same formula
00:24:20.099 --> 00:24:24.279
applied for a newer audience. Sometimes, unexpected
00:24:24.279 --> 00:24:26.839
things can happen when character A becomes immersed
00:24:26.839 --> 00:24:30.039
in world B, but that doesn't mean it's all bad.
00:24:30.599 --> 00:24:33.759
If anything, the possibilities are opened up
00:24:33.759 --> 00:24:37.740
in the viewer's imagination when done well. When
00:24:37.740 --> 00:24:40.380
they're not, however, the theatrics and references
00:24:40.380 --> 00:24:43.920
tend to fall flat on their face. And both Bravo
00:24:43.920 --> 00:24:46.039
Dewey Do and Halloween with Dead Ghost Coast
00:24:46.039 --> 00:24:48.579
to Coast are prime examples of a crossover done
00:24:48.579 --> 00:24:52.710
both right and wrong. kudos to bravo doobie doo
00:24:52.710 --> 00:24:55.509
for doing the crossover pioneers justice and
00:24:55.509 --> 00:25:00.009
winning my favor today so here's our closing

00:26:07.950 --> 00:26:11.430
spooky, terrifying, candy -filled checkered childhood
00:26:11.430 --> 00:26:14.150
memories with you and hope like best friends
00:26:14.150 --> 00:26:17.650
we'll do it again soon. Zoinks! I think it's
00:26:17.650 --> 00:26:19.470
time to get out of this spooky house while the
00:26:19.470 --> 00:26:22.329
getting's good because I feel like if I don't,
00:26:22.329 --> 00:26:25.589
there might be a haunted weed whacker or something
00:26:25.589 --> 00:26:28.670
that will cut my head off. Have a spooktacular
00:26:28.670 --> 00:26:31.369
evening, my friends. Until the shadows of night
00:26:31.369 --> 00:26:34.549
fall away from the lights, I'll check you next
00:26:34.549 --> 00:26:47.859
time. That's the ghost. Real nice kids. Now let's
00:26:47.859 --> 00:26:51.220
see who the ghostly gardener really is. Who's
00:26:51.220 --> 00:26:51.359
that?
