Chapters 1–6: the Dashwood women lose much of their expected financial security, John and Fanny Dashwood rationalize giving them almost no help, Elinor grows close to Edward Ferrars, and the family leaves Norland for Barton Cottage.
The opening chapters establish the economic problem that drives much of Sense and Sensibility. After the inheritance of Norland is arranged in a way that gives Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters little long-term security, John Dashwood promises his dying father that he will help them. Fanny quickly persuades him to reduce that generosity almost to nothing.
We also begin to see the contrast between Elinor and Marianne. Elinor becomes quietly attached to Edward Ferrars but refuses to assume that his feelings guarantee marriage. Marianne, by contrast, finds Edward’s reserve and lack of romantic enthusiasm difficult to understand.
Eventually Mrs. Dashwood accepts a cottage offered by her relative Sir John Middleton, and the women leave Norland for Barton Cottage in Devonshire. Their reduced circumstances create the social and financial setting for everything that follows.
These chapters are especially important for understanding inheritance, women’s economic vulnerability, family responsibility, Austen’s irony, and the contrast between Elinor’s caution and Marianne’s emotional certainty. (Project Gutenberg)
