00:00:03.120 --> 00:00:13.919
Ministering to the heart of Western Arkansas's River Valley for over 165 years, welcome to Chapter and First, the Bible Teaching Ministry of Fort Smith's First Baptist Church.
00:00:14.160 --> 00:00:19.359
You'll find sermons and teachings from Pastor Greg, our ministry staff, and guest speakers.
00:00:19.600 --> 00:00:21.199
Thank you for listening.
00:00:21.600 --> 00:00:24.559
Man, I am honored today to be a part of this.
00:00:26.399 --> 00:00:28.079
Some of you are saying, Well, it's Mother's Day.
00:00:28.160 --> 00:00:29.440
Why didn't the pastor preach?
00:00:29.600 --> 00:00:35.280
Well, uh these kids have been a part of my life for many years.
00:00:35.520 --> 00:00:42.479
And now I get to uh close it with them as they head off to school.
00:00:42.560 --> 00:00:44.079
And I cannot be more excited.
00:00:44.159 --> 00:00:46.399
Thank you for the privilege of doing this, and I'm honored.
00:00:46.560 --> 00:00:54.399
But first off, before we do that, it makes me think of, as Mother's Day, it makes me think of my mom, how grateful I am of my mom, how grateful I am of my wife.
00:00:54.640 --> 00:00:55.439
But you know what?
00:00:55.520 --> 00:01:01.119
I think about how great my mom was and how she helped me do really become the person that I am.
00:01:01.280 --> 00:01:03.920
Probably the greatest influence in my life.
00:01:04.239 --> 00:01:16.640
But I also think about all the ladies over the years that taught me in vacation Bible school, that taught me in Sunday school, taught me in different areas.
00:01:16.799 --> 00:01:20.319
When I would go over to friends' house, they would discipline me as well.
00:01:20.640 --> 00:01:27.519
How many mothers or ladies in my life have influenced me, and I am so grateful of that.
00:01:27.680 --> 00:01:30.480
But also, many of you don't know, some of many of you do.
00:01:30.640 --> 00:01:35.519
I was a children's pastor for years before, five years ago on back.
00:01:35.840 --> 00:01:45.920
And um, I will say this women, moms, thank you for what you do in our church.
00:01:46.159 --> 00:01:46.799
Amen.
00:01:48.239 --> 00:01:53.439
When something needs to be done, the women take care of it.
00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:55.599
And I am so grateful today.
00:01:55.680 --> 00:01:58.480
We want to honor you, but I want to say thank you.
00:01:58.799 --> 00:02:03.280
And so then it takes me to these seniors.
00:02:05.359 --> 00:02:12.479
When they gave me this list of seniors who were all going to be in the seniors, I got to look in, and did you know almost every one of them?
00:02:12.560 --> 00:02:14.080
I think there was 12.
00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:18.800
10 of the 12 I took to camp.
00:02:19.919 --> 00:02:23.840
Or I did vacation Bible school, or I taught them.
00:02:24.159 --> 00:02:27.520
As they come across and I shake their hand and they're being taller than me.
00:02:27.599 --> 00:02:28.560
I don't see them that way.
00:02:28.639 --> 00:02:30.240
I want to show you what I see them as.
00:02:30.400 --> 00:02:32.400
Can we show some of these pictures?
00:02:34.240 --> 00:02:37.439
So you can see now a little bit how it means a little bit more.
00:02:37.599 --> 00:02:51.360
I went to camp, I've cleaned off boo-boos, I've seen them pull their teeth, I have um seen them cry, and we had to call mom at camp, and now all of a sudden they're coming across taller than me, shaking my hand and with a deeper voice than I have.
00:02:51.439 --> 00:02:53.599
So I am grateful to be a part of today.
00:02:53.680 --> 00:03:03.280
And so as we were preparing for today, thinking about what message or what should I say that includes moms that also includes kids.
00:03:03.439 --> 00:03:07.039
And I just, oh, I forgot one.
00:03:08.879 --> 00:03:16.879
I have to show this picture because the leader that was up here doing all the talking, this is Abigail Woodry.
00:03:19.439 --> 00:03:25.840
I took her to camp when she was in third grade, and when I was flipping through and saw pictures, I had to show you that picture.
00:03:26.080 --> 00:03:28.159
Thank you, video, for not passing that by.
00:03:28.319 --> 00:03:31.439
So that's Abigail Woodring, our leader, and so grateful for Abigail.
00:03:31.520 --> 00:03:32.719
She did a great job today.
00:03:32.960 --> 00:03:37.199
But as I was preparing for today's message, I was thinking, what can I tell seniors?
00:03:37.439 --> 00:03:38.560
What can I tell parents?
00:03:38.719 --> 00:03:40.000
What can I tell all people?
00:03:40.159 --> 00:03:43.759
And so I think about this: the word obedience.
00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:51.599
And when I think of the word obedience, I want to put a question mark at the back because sometimes do we understand what obedience is?
00:03:52.080 --> 00:03:59.280
You know, the other day I was at a funeral and pastor uh Brother Dale was preaching the funeral, and Brother Dale said, What is truth?
00:03:59.759 --> 00:04:03.919
The world's trying to tell you this is truth, your truth is more important than that truth.
00:04:04.080 --> 00:04:05.520
The same thing with obedience.
00:04:05.759 --> 00:04:07.520
What is obedience?
00:04:08.159 --> 00:04:18.560
And so many times we get wrapped up in what does the world say about obedience, or what does our friend say about obedience, or what does the book say about obedience, but we forget sometimes to do what?
00:04:18.800 --> 00:04:21.120
What does God say about obedience?
00:04:21.360 --> 00:04:23.680
What does the Bible say about obedience?
00:04:23.839 --> 00:04:28.079
And so today I want to dive into obedience, but I want to start with a story.
00:04:28.160 --> 00:04:34.240
If you have your Bibles, take out your Bibles, if you will, and will you open it to 1 Chronicles 13?
00:04:34.480 --> 00:04:36.560
1 Chronicles 13.
00:04:39.120 --> 00:04:43.439
And as you're flipping there, can I just pray so that the Lord will bless this service, please?
00:04:43.600 --> 00:04:46.160
Pray with me as you're flipping to 1 Chronicles.
00:04:46.959 --> 00:04:50.000
Dear God, I thank you so much for these seniors.
00:04:50.160 --> 00:05:00.639
Lord, just thank you for their lives and just thank you for their families, and Lord, just thank you for the picture of the Bible and how just the picture of parents investing in their kids.
00:05:00.800 --> 00:05:05.839
Their kids are growing, and just like the little girl said, it just keeps on going.
00:05:06.079 --> 00:05:07.759
They become parents and they have kids.
00:05:07.839 --> 00:05:10.079
And Lord, we ask you to bless that.
00:05:10.319 --> 00:05:23.199
Lord, we ask you today, as we think of obedience and we study obedience, Lord, help us today leave here different because you spoke to us, not because Matt spoke to us.
00:05:23.600 --> 00:05:27.040
Lord, use our time together to challenge us and encourage us.
00:05:27.120 --> 00:05:28.480
In Jesus' name I pray.
00:05:28.800 --> 00:05:29.439
Amen.
00:05:29.839 --> 00:05:32.160
Now, in this story here, I'm gonna tell you a little bit about it.
00:05:32.240 --> 00:05:36.079
I was gonna read it, but then all the towns and all the people, it was just gonna be brutal.
00:05:36.160 --> 00:05:38.240
So I just thought, I'll tell you part of the story.
00:05:38.480 --> 00:05:44.639
So um, so King David was around, and all of a sudden he was already, he was the king of all of Israel.
00:05:44.879 --> 00:05:47.680
He things were going pretty good, and he thought, you know what?
00:05:47.839 --> 00:05:50.560
I need to go get the Ark of the Covenant.
00:05:50.720 --> 00:05:52.720
We need to go get that and bring it back.
00:05:52.879 --> 00:06:01.839
In fact, if you read through some of this, he says this, he goes, We haven't done anything with the Ark of the Covenant for a while.
00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:04.079
In fact, we didn't do anything during Saul.
00:06:04.240 --> 00:06:05.199
We need to go get it.
00:06:05.360 --> 00:06:07.680
Why was the Ark of the Covenant so important?
00:06:08.879 --> 00:06:14.800
Because all those years the Israelites were marching through, it was God's mercy seat.
00:06:14.959 --> 00:06:21.519
Between the two cherim angels, it's the Bible says that God sat right there.
00:06:21.920 --> 00:06:26.720
This was God, in fact, no one could go into the presence whenever they wanted to.
00:06:26.959 --> 00:06:29.920
It was God's presence here on earth.
00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:31.199
So it was important to them.
00:06:31.279 --> 00:06:33.600
And so David's like, let's go get it.
00:06:33.759 --> 00:06:39.279
So he get, whoa, just like David, he gets the leaders together and he says, Let's, what do you guys think?
00:06:39.439 --> 00:06:40.800
Should we go get it?
00:06:41.120 --> 00:06:43.199
You think it pleases the Lord?
00:06:43.839 --> 00:06:48.079
And the men said this, yeah, I think we should go get it.
00:06:48.959 --> 00:06:57.360
So the Bible says they go get it, they find it, and they're about to carry it back to Israel, and that's where I want to read.
00:06:57.439 --> 00:07:03.680
If you'll join me, we're gonna be in 1 Chronicles 13, beginning in verse 7.
00:07:04.959 --> 00:07:10.639
So they carried the ark of God on a new cart from the house of Abinadab.
00:07:11.680 --> 00:07:16.480
And Yuza and Ahio drove the cart.
00:07:16.720 --> 00:07:29.600
Then David and all of Israel played music before God and all with all their might, with singing on harps and stringed instruments, on tambourines, on cymbals, and with trumpets.
00:07:30.319 --> 00:07:39.920
When they came to the Kidon's threshing floor, Uzziah put out his hand to hold the ark, for the oxen stumbled.
00:07:40.160 --> 00:07:54.480
Then the anger of the Lord was aroused against Uriah Uzah, and he struck him because he put his hand to the ark, and he died there before God.
00:07:55.040 --> 00:08:00.079
And David became angry because of the Lord's outbreak against Yuzah.
00:08:00.399 --> 00:08:08.959
Therefore they placed, therefore, that place is called Perez Yuzah to this day.
00:08:09.279 --> 00:08:18.879
David was afraid of God that day, saying, How can I bring the ark of God to me?
00:08:19.360 --> 00:08:23.600
As we read that, I think there's a few points I want to just bring out just right away.
00:08:23.759 --> 00:08:30.480
I think one of the first things we see here is good intentions are no substitute for obedience.
00:08:31.680 --> 00:08:35.600
Good intentions are no substitutes for obedience.
00:08:35.759 --> 00:08:37.919
Now, we think about this just for a second.
00:08:38.159 --> 00:08:41.360
I really truly think David had good intentions.
00:08:42.879 --> 00:08:50.960
David went with a good heart to go get the Ark of the Covenant.
00:08:52.320 --> 00:08:54.799
He even seeked counsel.
00:08:55.039 --> 00:08:58.240
He went to the men and said, What do you think?
00:08:58.399 --> 00:08:59.919
Should we go get it?
00:09:00.879 --> 00:09:04.480
And then they did something special.
00:09:04.720 --> 00:09:06.639
They went with a new cart.
00:09:06.720 --> 00:09:08.559
They didn't even use an old cart.
00:09:08.799 --> 00:09:11.200
They went with a new cart to do what?
00:09:11.919 --> 00:09:15.679
Put the ark on it and carry it away.
00:09:17.600 --> 00:09:42.159
The problem is in Numbers 4.15, when they were told how to carry the ark, it said a certain group of men, the Levites, were to carry it, but they shall not touch any holy thing lest they die.
00:09:47.600 --> 00:09:58.480
Listen, we have to be very careful that our worship or our time with the Lord becomes all about us.
00:10:01.519 --> 00:10:03.759
As the band here was practicing today.
00:10:03.919 --> 00:10:05.279
By the way, the band did awesome.
00:10:05.360 --> 00:10:06.480
Thank you guys.
00:10:06.799 --> 00:10:10.879
But I will tell you this there were some nerves up here on the stage.
00:10:11.519 --> 00:10:13.360
In fact, one of them said, Do you get nervous?
00:10:13.440 --> 00:10:15.120
And I said, I stay nervous.
00:10:18.080 --> 00:10:20.159
But you know what I was able to encourage them?
00:10:20.320 --> 00:10:25.679
Because listen, them singing today was not about them.
00:10:26.240 --> 00:10:30.159
It was about leading us to worship.
00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:35.200
So good intentions are no substitute for obedience.
00:10:35.360 --> 00:10:42.159
Number two, responding to our mistakes says a lot about us.
00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:45.120
That's important.
00:10:45.440 --> 00:10:49.120
Responding to our mistakes says a lot about us.
00:10:49.279 --> 00:10:57.039
We see here right away what did David do as soon as Yuza reached up and touched and died.
00:10:57.279 --> 00:10:59.200
It said he became angry.
00:11:04.480 --> 00:11:07.200
Then it says he was in fear.
00:11:07.360 --> 00:11:11.440
Now this fear is not the righteous, holy fear that we're called to be in.
00:11:11.600 --> 00:11:14.960
This fear is like scared.
00:11:16.399 --> 00:11:21.519
Look with me in 1 Chronicles, right there where we're at, 1 Chronicles 13, 12.
00:11:21.679 --> 00:11:23.679
Listen to what David says.
00:11:24.799 --> 00:11:29.200
How can I bring the ark of God home to me?
00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:31.919
Let me read that one more time.
00:11:33.679 --> 00:11:35.759
This is David saying this.
00:11:36.720 --> 00:11:41.679
How can I bring the ark of God home to me?
00:11:42.960 --> 00:11:44.799
Does God need that ark?
00:11:45.120 --> 00:11:47.120
Did Israel need that ark?
00:11:47.360 --> 00:11:48.559
They had God.
00:11:49.759 --> 00:11:51.919
And David's thinking, you know what?
00:11:53.279 --> 00:11:58.879
If we're not careful, it can always be, or we can change it to be about us.
00:11:59.600 --> 00:12:18.639
So as we see here, when God is disciplining us, or we're going through a trial or a temptation, the first place we should go is to God and ask what?
00:12:19.759 --> 00:12:21.440
What have I done?
00:12:22.000 --> 00:12:23.279
I need help.
00:12:24.320 --> 00:12:27.919
And we're going to see David eventually gets there as we continue.
00:12:28.080 --> 00:12:28.399
Okay?
00:12:28.720 --> 00:12:29.919
Number three.
00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:34.399
We see in here, what does the presence of God look like?
00:12:34.639 --> 00:12:41.360
Verse 3, or the third point, what does it look like to seek God's presence?
00:12:43.759 --> 00:12:47.120
We see that David thought he was doing good.
00:12:47.279 --> 00:12:49.200
He got his guys together.
00:12:49.519 --> 00:12:51.279
He said, What should we do?
00:12:51.600 --> 00:12:58.080
He even says, if you read up there, he even says something along the lines of, well, if it pleases God, let's go do it.
00:12:58.960 --> 00:13:01.600
But the part he had forgot about was what?
00:13:02.159 --> 00:13:03.360
Seeking God.
00:13:04.080 --> 00:13:05.360
Let me read a passage.
00:13:05.440 --> 00:13:06.159
This is David.
00:13:06.240 --> 00:13:07.519
This is David also.
00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:09.519
But look at the difference here.
00:13:09.679 --> 00:13:12.879
This is when David seeked God.
00:13:13.279 --> 00:13:15.919
Now he does it a lot through scripture, but this is one of them.
00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:17.440
And this is just right after here.
00:13:17.519 --> 00:13:18.799
Listen to, just listen to this.
00:13:18.960 --> 00:13:21.600
1 Chronicles 14, verse 9.
00:13:21.759 --> 00:13:26.639
Then the Philistines went and made a raid on the valley of Rephiim.
00:13:27.039 --> 00:13:34.080
And David inquired God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines?
00:13:34.559 --> 00:13:37.360
Will you deliver them into my hands?
00:13:37.840 --> 00:13:39.279
See the difference?
00:13:39.759 --> 00:13:43.840
He didn't go to a group of guys and say, Do you think God wants us to go fight them?
00:13:44.159 --> 00:13:46.720
He went straight to God and said, What?
00:13:47.679 --> 00:13:50.000
Hey God, should we do this today?
00:13:53.519 --> 00:13:56.080
What does the presence of God look like?
00:13:58.480 --> 00:14:02.159
It looks like it's all about Him and less about us.
00:14:04.879 --> 00:14:07.279
Listen to what Psalms 105 says.
00:14:07.440 --> 00:14:08.559
Now listen to this real quick.
00:14:10.000 --> 00:14:13.120
Psalms 105, David wrote it.
00:14:13.440 --> 00:14:15.759
Now David went to get the ark twice.
00:14:16.000 --> 00:14:17.440
Okay, and we're going to get into that.
00:14:17.519 --> 00:14:22.799
He went this first time, Yuza died, and then eventually he's going to go back and get it again.
00:14:23.039 --> 00:14:30.320
When he goes back and get it again, during that time, you remember they're praising and worshiping, and David writes this Psalm.
00:14:30.399 --> 00:14:33.279
Listen to what David writes at this time.
00:14:33.840 --> 00:14:35.919
This is Psalms 105.4.
00:14:36.559 --> 00:14:43.120
Seek the Lord and his strength and seek his face evermore.
00:14:45.840 --> 00:14:51.919
Having a heart that longs for God puts us in the presence of God.
00:14:55.279 --> 00:14:56.799
Did you hear that?
00:14:57.679 --> 00:15:02.639
Having a heart for God puts us in the presence of God.
00:15:02.879 --> 00:15:05.759
How many of you in the morning have read your Bible?
00:15:06.240 --> 00:15:08.320
And honestly, you shut your Bible.
00:15:08.559 --> 00:15:10.559
I read my Bible today.
00:15:12.480 --> 00:15:14.960
But you read that just a lot for yourself.
00:15:15.279 --> 00:15:16.320
I've been there.
00:15:16.639 --> 00:15:18.720
But have you ever read the Bible?
00:15:20.399 --> 00:15:27.519
And I love our the study we're doing with the five questions before we start.
00:15:27.600 --> 00:15:31.279
It just prepares us for reading our Bible.
00:15:32.240 --> 00:15:41.679
Says, Lord, help me today as I hear your word, help your word change my thoughts, my actions, my desires.
00:15:45.279 --> 00:15:49.120
If there's something in my life that is wrong, point that out to me.
00:15:49.360 --> 00:15:53.600
And it gets us ready for our time of reading.
00:15:54.399 --> 00:16:02.960
Just yesterday I was reading it in the Psalms and just being encouraged, and then I read in a little bit of the same story in 1 Samuel.
00:16:03.519 --> 00:16:10.240
And it's funny, when my heart is ready to go into my quiet time, how much more I get out of my quiet time.
00:16:11.840 --> 00:16:13.120
And it never fails.
00:16:13.279 --> 00:16:16.799
When my heart is right in my quiet time, guess what?
00:16:17.279 --> 00:16:22.480
I do a lot better job of responding throughout the day.
00:16:22.720 --> 00:16:23.519
And guess what?
00:16:23.600 --> 00:16:25.919
It has very little to do with me.
00:16:28.879 --> 00:16:30.960
It's because I'm in the presence of the Lord.
00:16:31.120 --> 00:16:33.279
He changed me that morning, and guess what?
00:16:33.519 --> 00:16:35.840
It carries on throughout the day.
00:16:36.159 --> 00:16:39.440
I was telling the students I was able to talk to them on Wednesday.
00:16:39.679 --> 00:16:46.320
It's amazing how I can do the same thing twice and have a different reaction.
00:16:47.519 --> 00:16:58.000
When I'm in the presence of the Lord and having a quiet time, let's say later on the day I can be hammering and I can smash my thumb, and let me tell you, it still hurts.
00:16:59.919 --> 00:17:01.440
But I'm controlled.
00:17:02.159 --> 00:17:12.480
But have you ever been there those times that I'm not in the presence of the Lord, not having my quiet time, and I hit my thumb and it still hurts, and things come out of my mouth that should not?
00:17:12.640 --> 00:17:14.000
What's the difference?
00:17:16.960 --> 00:17:18.799
It's the picture of what I'm trying to say here.
00:17:18.960 --> 00:17:22.000
What does it look like to seek God's presence?
00:17:23.759 --> 00:17:36.480
And then number four, I think a huge thing that we take for granted, granted, is God is holy.
00:17:37.440 --> 00:17:39.680
Think about that just for a second.
00:17:41.759 --> 00:17:47.200
I think Isaiah 40, I could have read the whole Isaiah 40, but I'm only going to read one verse.
00:17:47.279 --> 00:17:48.160
But listen to this.
00:17:48.400 --> 00:17:51.519
Isaiah 40, 28 says this.
00:17:53.759 --> 00:17:55.359
Have you not known?
00:17:55.680 --> 00:17:57.039
Have you not heard?
00:17:57.359 --> 00:18:05.680
The everlasting God, the Lord, the creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary.
00:18:06.640 --> 00:18:10.480
His understanding is unsearchable.
00:18:11.039 --> 00:18:22.160
You know, as we started reading, I've never really got into this, but as we started reading this, the chronological Bible this time, I've never even noticed this, but what do they call God?
00:18:23.279 --> 00:18:24.480
Yahweh.
00:18:25.119 --> 00:18:40.240
But if you really look at it, when they talk about God, they don't even use vows in Yahweh because there is no word that can describe God and who He is and His holiness.
00:18:42.240 --> 00:18:49.599
And so many times, and myself included, if I'm not careful, me and God are on the same level.
00:18:49.920 --> 00:18:51.119
We're peers.
00:18:54.640 --> 00:19:02.559
I forget sometimes the righteous, reverence, fear that I should have of the holy, just, perfect God.
00:19:03.519 --> 00:19:14.000
I was at a student deal one time, and the guy was up giving a testimony, and he was doing a good job, and then all of a sudden he says, I have such a great relationship with God, I don't call him God anymore.
00:19:14.160 --> 00:19:16.079
I call him G Dog.
00:19:17.200 --> 00:19:19.920
And I started looking around for lightning.
00:19:22.400 --> 00:19:24.079
You hear what you do now.
00:19:24.400 --> 00:19:32.880
God wants a relationship with us, but not to the point that I change him to be like me.
00:19:34.960 --> 00:19:41.279
So then that leads us to number five.
00:19:41.839 --> 00:19:45.359
God's presence brings blessings.
00:19:45.839 --> 00:19:53.279
And it starts with this the holy, just perfect God wants a relationship with me.
00:19:54.000 --> 00:19:55.759
You know, that blows my mind.
00:19:56.640 --> 00:20:02.480
I can sit up here with my pink tie on and impress you, which I'm probably not, but I can.
00:20:04.480 --> 00:20:15.839
If you knew what was going on here and sometimes in here, you would be with me realizing how in the world can a holy, just, perfect God want to have a relationship with me.
00:20:17.680 --> 00:20:19.359
You get where I'm going with this?
00:20:19.599 --> 00:20:20.880
The holy, just, perfect.
00:20:21.200 --> 00:20:27.200
And this is why the Bible says all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
00:20:28.319 --> 00:20:32.079
God loved us so much that He gave us a way to still what?
00:20:32.319 --> 00:20:35.039
Have a relationship with Him.
00:20:36.960 --> 00:20:46.480
Students, what a gift! And many of you, we've been I've been fortunate to get to baptize you.
00:20:47.279 --> 00:20:56.880
And so many times we can get running so fast it becomes about us and we forget about who God is and the love that God has for us.
00:20:58.319 --> 00:21:03.920
God's presence is not to bring judgment, even though it can.
00:21:05.839 --> 00:21:08.799
God's presence is to bring about a blessing.
00:21:12.079 --> 00:21:18.400
Listen to what happens forward, some, in 1 Chronicles 15, 13.
00:21:20.160 --> 00:21:21.839
David says this.
00:21:29.759 --> 00:21:38.079
Because we did not consult him about the proper order, the right procedure.
00:21:38.400 --> 00:21:40.559
David finally realized what?
00:21:40.960 --> 00:21:45.359
He forgot everything except who God was.
00:21:48.480 --> 00:21:53.839
And if I understand right, I was not there, but it was a party when they did it right.
00:21:58.960 --> 00:22:02.640
Um About a year and a half ago.
00:22:02.960 --> 00:22:10.000
Well, actually, about two years ago or so, my daughter and my son-in-law had a baby.
00:22:10.960 --> 00:22:19.200
And it was for a year he stayed in the NICU, just battling through different things.
00:22:19.279 --> 00:22:24.400
And Lisa and I's anniversary was coming up, and we were praying through should we go, should we stay?
00:22:24.640 --> 00:22:30.240
He was doing better at that time, still in the hospital, so we went 10 hours away.
00:22:30.480 --> 00:22:32.240
And we were having a great time.
00:22:32.480 --> 00:22:41.279
And all of a sudden, Pacey calls and says, Hey dad, they've put Caseen on palatal, or they're thinking about putting Caseon on palatal care.
00:22:41.359 --> 00:22:43.119
There's nothing else they can do.
00:22:44.000 --> 00:22:45.920
We're supposed to call the family.
00:22:46.880 --> 00:22:47.920
I'll never forget.
00:22:48.000 --> 00:22:51.839
We get the phone call, we're 10 hours away, we get in the car, we start driving.
00:22:52.079 --> 00:23:03.599
And I'm just going to tell you, it's easy for me to look at the story of David and be critical of David, but in this particular instance, when the call came, I'll be honest, when I got in the car, I was angry at God.
00:23:04.160 --> 00:23:05.119
I was mad.
00:23:05.599 --> 00:23:06.400
God, really?
00:23:06.640 --> 00:23:12.240
We've battled for almost a year, and we're still gonna do this, and now we're gonna call in the family.
00:23:12.480 --> 00:23:14.720
Now he's not gonna make it.
00:23:18.559 --> 00:23:24.400
And we start gradually driving, not talking.
00:23:25.279 --> 00:23:35.920
And I switch from anger, and I see in Davis to a fear like I'll be honest, I was doubting what I believe.
00:23:37.119 --> 00:23:38.960
I was frustrated.
00:23:41.359 --> 00:23:50.640
And about five hours into it, the Lord started saying, I got this.
00:23:53.599 --> 00:24:02.000
And when we talk about just being in his presence, we were listening to the Christian radio station, just hearing songs as we drove, the Lord just kept.
00:24:02.640 --> 00:24:08.400
For by the time we get to Little Rock to go into the hospital, I was in a way different place.
00:24:09.039 --> 00:24:15.200
Because I realized how holy God was, that he knew what was best for me.
00:24:15.920 --> 00:24:18.000
I just need to let him be God.
00:24:20.559 --> 00:24:25.519
I walked in the hospital, we said a prayer, because I had no idea what was going to be said.
00:24:25.920 --> 00:24:37.200
But I was to the point now, if God wanted to take Case and He knew what was best for Caseon, if he was going to leave Casein, he knew what was best for Matt Passmore.
00:24:39.519 --> 00:24:48.160
And I had to get into the point or the space in my life that he was holy and he knew what was best.
00:24:50.079 --> 00:24:55.839
Today, as we close, listen to this.
00:24:56.400 --> 00:25:10.400
Obedience to God proves our love for him, it demonstrates our faithfulness to him and glorifies him to the world.
00:25:11.519 --> 00:25:16.960
And it opens avenues of blessing for us.
00:25:17.920 --> 00:25:48.079
Listen, as we look at David's story, the first time he messed up, but our gracious, perfect God forgave him, gave him a second chance, and the second time he was able to bring it back successfully, and the whole time he did that, he honored and he praised the Lord.
00:25:48.400 --> 00:25:51.759
If you'll bow your heads with me today, bow your heads.
00:26:01.359 --> 00:26:23.440
Maybe there's an area in your life that you realize, whether that's through things you're going through your life, or just an area in your life that you know you're living in rebellion with God, and you've got to realize that God wants a relationship with you, and He is a holy, just God, and we should be grateful for that relationship.
00:26:24.000 --> 00:26:26.240
So today I just want you to get right with God.
00:26:26.640 --> 00:26:27.759
Get where are you at?
00:26:27.839 --> 00:26:32.960
And then I want to say this if you have never came to know Christ today, I want to challenge you today.
00:26:33.119 --> 00:26:37.200
We're gonna have men in the aisles, Pastor Leonard, to come pray with.
00:26:40.319 --> 00:26:42.799
Dear God, I just come before you today.
00:26:43.200 --> 00:26:44.640
Thankful for your word.
00:26:45.440 --> 00:26:51.920
Thank you that you want to have a relationship with us, and Lord, thank you that you are holy and perfect.
00:26:53.359 --> 00:27:09.599
Lord, we want to come before you today and worship you as we sing and honor you as you sing, because living in your presence is so much better than living in our own.
00:27:12.240 --> 00:27:13.039
Thank you, Lord.
00:27:13.119 --> 00:27:14.559
In Jesus' name we're praying.
00:27:14.880 --> 00:27:15.519
Amen.
00:27:16.319 --> 00:27:20.960
We pray this message has been a blessing to you and helped to strengthen your walk with Jesus.
00:27:21.119 --> 00:27:23.920
Please know we want to minister to you and pray for you.
00:27:24.079 --> 00:27:31.440
Send an email to contact us at fsfbc.org and let us pray for you and help you in any way we can.
00:27:31.920 --> 00:27:37.920
Thank you for listening to Chapter and First, the Bible Teaching Ministry of Fort Smith's First Baptist Church.
00:00:03.120 --> 00:00:13.919
Ministering to the heart of Western Arkansas's River Valley for over 165 years, welcome to Chapter and First, the Bible Teaching Ministry of Fort Smith's First Baptist Church.
00:00:14.160 --> 00:00:19.359
You'll find sermons and teachings from Pastor Greg, our ministry staff, and guest speakers.
00:00:19.600 --> 00:00:21.199
Thank you for listening.
00:00:21.600 --> 00:00:24.559
Man, I am honored today to be a part of this.
00:00:26.399 --> 00:00:28.079
Some of you are saying, Well, it's Mother's Day.
00:00:28.160 --> 00:00:29.440
Why didn't the pastor preach?
00:00:29.600 --> 00:00:35.280
Well, uh these kids have been a part of my life for many years.
00:00:35.520 --> 00:00:42.479
And now I get to uh close it with them as they head off to school.
00:00:42.560 --> 00:00:44.079
And I cannot be more excited.
00:00:44.159 --> 00:00:46.399
Thank you for the privilege of doing this, and I'm honored.
00:00:46.560 --> 00:00:54.399
But first off, before we do that, it makes me think of, as Mother's Day, it makes me think of my mom, how grateful I am of my mom, how grateful I am of my wife.
00:00:54.640 --> 00:00:55.439
But you know what?
00:00:55.520 --> 00:01:01.119
I think about how great my mom was and how she helped me do really become the person that I am.
00:01:01.280 --> 00:01:03.920
Probably the greatest influence in my life.
00:01:04.239 --> 00:01:16.640
But I also think about all the ladies over the years that taught me in vacation Bible school, that taught me in Sunday school, taught me in different areas.
00:01:16.799 --> 00:01:20.319
When I would go over to friends' house, they would discipline me as well.
00:01:20.640 --> 00:01:27.519
How many mothers or ladies in my life have influenced me, and I am so grateful of that.
00:01:27.680 --> 00:01:30.480
But also, many of you don't know, some of many of you do.
00:01:30.640 --> 00:01:35.519
I was a children's pastor for years before, five years ago on back.
00:01:35.840 --> 00:01:45.920
And um, I will say this women, moms, thank you for what you do in our church.
00:01:46.159 --> 00:01:46.799
Amen.
00:01:48.239 --> 00:01:53.439
When something needs to be done, the women take care of it.
00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:55.599
And I am so grateful today.
00:01:55.680 --> 00:01:58.480
We want to honor you, but I want to say thank you.
00:01:58.799 --> 00:02:03.280
And so then it takes me to these seniors.
00:02:05.359 --> 00:02:12.479
When they gave me this list of seniors who were all going to be in the seniors, I got to look in, and did you know almost every one of them?
00:02:12.560 --> 00:02:14.080
I think there was 12.
00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:18.800
10 of the 12 I took to camp.
00:02:19.919 --> 00:02:23.840
Or I did vacation Bible school, or I taught them.
00:02:24.159 --> 00:02:27.520
As they come across and I shake their hand and they're being taller than me.
00:02:27.599 --> 00:02:28.560
I don't see them that way.
00:02:28.639 --> 00:02:30.240
I want to show you what I see them as.
00:02:30.400 --> 00:02:32.400
Can we show some of these pictures?
00:02:34.240 --> 00:02:37.439
So you can see now a little bit how it means a little bit more.
00:02:37.599 --> 00:02:51.360
I went to camp, I've cleaned off boo-boos, I've seen them pull their teeth, I have um seen them cry, and we had to call mom at camp, and now all of a sudden they're coming across taller than me, shaking my hand and with a deeper voice than I have.
00:02:51.439 --> 00:02:53.599
So I am grateful to be a part of today.
00:02:53.680 --> 00:03:03.280
And so as we were preparing for today, thinking about what message or what should I say that includes moms that also includes kids.
00:03:03.439 --> 00:03:07.039
And I just, oh, I forgot one.
00:03:08.879 --> 00:03:16.879
I have to show this picture because the leader that was up here doing all the talking, this is Abigail Woodry.
00:03:19.439 --> 00:03:25.840
I took her to camp when she was in third grade, and when I was flipping through and saw pictures, I had to show you that picture.
00:03:26.080 --> 00:03:28.159
Thank you, video, for not passing that by.
00:03:28.319 --> 00:03:31.439
So that's Abigail Woodring, our leader, and so grateful for Abigail.
00:03:31.520 --> 00:03:32.719
She did a great job today.
00:03:32.960 --> 00:03:37.199
But as I was preparing for today's message, I was thinking, what can I tell seniors?
00:03:37.439 --> 00:03:38.560
What can I tell parents?
00:03:38.719 --> 00:03:40.000
What can I tell all people?
00:03:40.159 --> 00:03:43.759
And so I think about this: the word obedience.
00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:51.599
And when I think of the word obedience, I want to put a question mark at the back because sometimes do we understand what obedience is?
00:03:52.080 --> 00:03:59.280
You know, the other day I was at a funeral and pastor uh Brother Dale was preaching the funeral, and Brother Dale said, What is truth?
00:03:59.759 --> 00:04:03.919
The world's trying to tell you this is truth, your truth is more important than that truth.
00:04:04.080 --> 00:04:05.520
The same thing with obedience.
00:04:05.759 --> 00:04:07.520
What is obedience?
00:04:08.159 --> 00:04:18.560
And so many times we get wrapped up in what does the world say about obedience, or what does our friend say about obedience, or what does the book say about obedience, but we forget sometimes to do what?
00:04:18.800 --> 00:04:21.120
What does God say about obedience?
00:04:21.360 --> 00:04:23.680
What does the Bible say about obedience?
00:04:23.839 --> 00:04:28.079
And so today I want to dive into obedience, but I want to start with a story.
00:04:28.160 --> 00:04:34.240
If you have your Bibles, take out your Bibles, if you will, and will you open it to 1 Chronicles 13?
00:04:34.480 --> 00:04:36.560
1 Chronicles 13.
00:04:39.120 --> 00:04:43.439
And as you're flipping there, can I just pray so that the Lord will bless this service, please?
00:04:43.600 --> 00:04:46.160
Pray with me as you're flipping to 1 Chronicles.
00:04:46.959 --> 00:04:50.000
Dear God, I thank you so much for these seniors.
00:04:50.160 --> 00:05:00.639
Lord, just thank you for their lives and just thank you for their families, and Lord, just thank you for the picture of the Bible and how just the picture of parents investing in their kids.
00:05:00.800 --> 00:05:05.839
Their kids are growing, and just like the little girl said, it just keeps on going.
00:05:06.079 --> 00:05:07.759
They become parents and they have kids.
00:05:07.839 --> 00:05:10.079
And Lord, we ask you to bless that.
00:05:10.319 --> 00:05:23.199
Lord, we ask you today, as we think of obedience and we study obedience, Lord, help us today leave here different because you spoke to us, not because Matt spoke to us.
00:05:23.600 --> 00:05:27.040
Lord, use our time together to challenge us and encourage us.
00:05:27.120 --> 00:05:28.480
In Jesus' name I pray.
00:05:28.800 --> 00:05:29.439
Amen.
00:05:29.839 --> 00:05:32.160
Now, in this story here, I'm gonna tell you a little bit about it.
00:05:32.240 --> 00:05:36.079
I was gonna read it, but then all the towns and all the people, it was just gonna be brutal.
00:05:36.160 --> 00:05:38.240
So I just thought, I'll tell you part of the story.
00:05:38.480 --> 00:05:44.639
So um, so King David was around, and all of a sudden he was already, he was the king of all of Israel.
00:05:44.879 --> 00:05:47.680
He things were going pretty good, and he thought, you know what?
00:05:47.839 --> 00:05:50.560
I need to go get the Ark of the Covenant.
00:05:50.720 --> 00:05:52.720
We need to go get that and bring it back.
00:05:52.879 --> 00:06:01.839
In fact, if you read through some of this, he says this, he goes, We haven't done anything with the Ark of the Covenant for a while.
00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:04.079
In fact, we didn't do anything during Saul.
00:06:04.240 --> 00:06:05.199
We need to go get it.
00:06:05.360 --> 00:06:07.680
Why was the Ark of the Covenant so important?
00:06:08.879 --> 00:06:14.800
Because all those years the Israelites were marching through, it was God's mercy seat.
00:06:14.959 --> 00:06:21.519
Between the two cherim angels, it's the Bible says that God sat right there.
00:06:21.920 --> 00:06:26.720
This was God, in fact, no one could go into the presence whenever they wanted to.
00:06:26.959 --> 00:06:29.920
It was God's presence here on earth.
00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:31.199
So it was important to them.
00:06:31.279 --> 00:06:33.600
And so David's like, let's go get it.
00:06:33.759 --> 00:06:39.279
So he get, whoa, just like David, he gets the leaders together and he says, Let's, what do you guys think?
00:06:39.439 --> 00:06:40.800
Should we go get it?
00:06:41.120 --> 00:06:43.199
You think it pleases the Lord?
00:06:43.839 --> 00:06:48.079
And the men said this, yeah, I think we should go get it.
00:06:48.959 --> 00:06:57.360
So the Bible says they go get it, they find it, and they're about to carry it back to Israel, and that's where I want to read.
00:06:57.439 --> 00:07:03.680
If you'll join me, we're gonna be in 1 Chronicles 13, beginning in verse 7.
00:07:04.959 --> 00:07:10.639
So they carried the ark of God on a new cart from the house of Abinadab.
00:07:11.680 --> 00:07:16.480
And Yuza and Ahio drove the cart.
00:07:16.720 --> 00:07:29.600
Then David and all of Israel played music before God and all with all their might, with singing on harps and stringed instruments, on tambourines, on cymbals, and with trumpets.
00:07:30.319 --> 00:07:39.920
When they came to the Kidon's threshing floor, Uzziah put out his hand to hold the ark, for the oxen stumbled.
00:07:40.160 --> 00:07:54.480
Then the anger of the Lord was aroused against Uriah Uzah, and he struck him because he put his hand to the ark, and he died there before God.
00:07:55.040 --> 00:08:00.079
And David became angry because of the Lord's outbreak against Yuzah.
00:08:00.399 --> 00:08:08.959
Therefore they placed, therefore, that place is called Perez Yuzah to this day.
00:08:09.279 --> 00:08:18.879
David was afraid of God that day, saying, How can I bring the ark of God to me?
00:08:19.360 --> 00:08:23.600
As we read that, I think there's a few points I want to just bring out just right away.
00:08:23.759 --> 00:08:30.480
I think one of the first things we see here is good intentions are no substitute for obedience.
00:08:31.680 --> 00:08:35.600
Good intentions are no substitutes for obedience.
00:08:35.759 --> 00:08:37.919
Now, we think about this just for a second.
00:08:38.159 --> 00:08:41.360
I really truly think David had good intentions.
00:08:42.879 --> 00:08:50.960
David went with a good heart to go get the Ark of the Covenant.
00:08:52.320 --> 00:08:54.799
He even seeked counsel.
00:08:55.039 --> 00:08:58.240
He went to the men and said, What do you think?
00:08:58.399 --> 00:08:59.919
Should we go get it?
00:09:00.879 --> 00:09:04.480
And then they did something special.
00:09:04.720 --> 00:09:06.639
They went with a new cart.
00:09:06.720 --> 00:09:08.559
They didn't even use an old cart.
00:09:08.799 --> 00:09:11.200
They went with a new cart to do what?
00:09:11.919 --> 00:09:15.679
Put the ark on it and carry it away.
00:09:17.600 --> 00:09:42.159
The problem is in Numbers 4.15, when they were told how to carry the ark, it said a certain group of men, the Levites, were to carry it, but they shall not touch any holy thing lest they die.
00:09:47.600 --> 00:09:58.480
Listen, we have to be very careful that our worship or our time with the Lord becomes all about us.
00:10:01.519 --> 00:10:03.759
As the band here was practicing today.
00:10:03.919 --> 00:10:05.279
By the way, the band did awesome.
00:10:05.360 --> 00:10:06.480
Thank you guys.
00:10:06.799 --> 00:10:10.879
But I will tell you this there were some nerves up here on the stage.
00:10:11.519 --> 00:10:13.360
In fact, one of them said, Do you get nervous?
00:10:13.440 --> 00:10:15.120
And I said, I stay nervous.
00:10:18.080 --> 00:10:20.159
But you know what I was able to encourage them?
00:10:20.320 --> 00:10:25.679
Because listen, them singing today was not about them.
00:10:26.240 --> 00:10:30.159
It was about leading us to worship.
00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:35.200
So good intentions are no substitute for obedience.
00:10:35.360 --> 00:10:42.159
Number two, responding to our mistakes says a lot about us.
00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:45.120
That's important.
00:10:45.440 --> 00:10:49.120
Responding to our mistakes says a lot about us.
00:10:49.279 --> 00:10:57.039
We see here right away what did David do as soon as Yuza reached up and touched and died.
00:10:57.279 --> 00:10:59.200
It said he became angry.
00:11:04.480 --> 00:11:07.200
Then it says he was in fear.
00:11:07.360 --> 00:11:11.440
Now this fear is not the righteous, holy fear that we're called to be in.
00:11:11.600 --> 00:11:14.960
This fear is like scared.
00:11:16.399 --> 00:11:21.519
Look with me in 1 Chronicles, right there where we're at, 1 Chronicles 13, 12.
00:11:21.679 --> 00:11:23.679
Listen to what David says.
00:11:24.799 --> 00:11:29.200
How can I bring the ark of God home to me?
00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:31.919
Let me read that one more time.
00:11:33.679 --> 00:11:35.759
This is David saying this.
00:11:36.720 --> 00:11:41.679
How can I bring the ark of God home to me?
00:11:42.960 --> 00:11:44.799
Does God need that ark?
00:11:45.120 --> 00:11:47.120
Did Israel need that ark?
00:11:47.360 --> 00:11:48.559
They had God.
00:11:49.759 --> 00:11:51.919
And David's thinking, you know what?
00:11:53.279 --> 00:11:58.879
If we're not careful, it can always be, or we can change it to be about us.
00:11:59.600 --> 00:12:18.639
So as we see here, when God is disciplining us, or we're going through a trial or a temptation, the first place we should go is to God and ask what?
00:12:19.759 --> 00:12:21.440
What have I done?
00:12:22.000 --> 00:12:23.279
I need help.
00:12:24.320 --> 00:12:27.919
And we're going to see David eventually gets there as we continue.
00:12:28.080 --> 00:12:28.399
Okay?
00:12:28.720 --> 00:12:29.919
Number three.
00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:34.399
We see in here, what does the presence of God look like?
00:12:34.639 --> 00:12:41.360
Verse 3, or the third point, what does it look like to seek God's presence?
00:12:43.759 --> 00:12:47.120
We see that David thought he was doing good.
00:12:47.279 --> 00:12:49.200
He got his guys together.
00:12:49.519 --> 00:12:51.279
He said, What should we do?
00:12:51.600 --> 00:12:58.080
He even says, if you read up there, he even says something along the lines of, well, if it pleases God, let's go do it.
00:12:58.960 --> 00:13:01.600
But the part he had forgot about was what?
00:13:02.159 --> 00:13:03.360
Seeking God.
00:13:04.080 --> 00:13:05.360
Let me read a passage.
00:13:05.440 --> 00:13:06.159
This is David.
00:13:06.240 --> 00:13:07.519
This is David also.
00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:09.519
But look at the difference here.
00:13:09.679 --> 00:13:12.879
This is when David seeked God.
00:13:13.279 --> 00:13:15.919
Now he does it a lot through scripture, but this is one of them.
00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:17.440
And this is just right after here.
00:13:17.519 --> 00:13:18.799
Listen to, just listen to this.
00:13:18.960 --> 00:13:21.600
1 Chronicles 14, verse 9.
00:13:21.759 --> 00:13:26.639
Then the Philistines went and made a raid on the valley of Rephiim.
00:13:27.039 --> 00:13:34.080
And David inquired God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines?
00:13:34.559 --> 00:13:37.360
Will you deliver them into my hands?
00:13:37.840 --> 00:13:39.279
See the difference?
00:13:39.759 --> 00:13:43.840
He didn't go to a group of guys and say, Do you think God wants us to go fight them?
00:13:44.159 --> 00:13:46.720
He went straight to God and said, What?
00:13:47.679 --> 00:13:50.000
Hey God, should we do this today?
00:13:53.519 --> 00:13:56.080
What does the presence of God look like?
00:13:58.480 --> 00:14:02.159
It looks like it's all about Him and less about us.
00:14:04.879 --> 00:14:07.279
Listen to what Psalms 105 says.
00:14:07.440 --> 00:14:08.559
Now listen to this real quick.
00:14:10.000 --> 00:14:13.120
Psalms 105, David wrote it.
00:14:13.440 --> 00:14:15.759
Now David went to get the ark twice.
00:14:16.000 --> 00:14:17.440
Okay, and we're going to get into that.
00:14:17.519 --> 00:14:22.799
He went this first time, Yuza died, and then eventually he's going to go back and get it again.
00:14:23.039 --> 00:14:30.320
When he goes back and get it again, during that time, you remember they're praising and worshiping, and David writes this Psalm.
00:14:30.399 --> 00:14:33.279
Listen to what David writes at this time.
00:14:33.840 --> 00:14:35.919
This is Psalms 105.4.
00:14:36.559 --> 00:14:43.120
Seek the Lord and his strength and seek his face evermore.
00:14:45.840 --> 00:14:51.919
Having a heart that longs for God puts us in the presence of God.
00:14:55.279 --> 00:14:56.799
Did you hear that?
00:14:57.679 --> 00:15:02.639
Having a heart for God puts us in the presence of God.
00:15:02.879 --> 00:15:05.759
How many of you in the morning have read your Bible?
00:15:06.240 --> 00:15:08.320
And honestly, you shut your Bible.
00:15:08.559 --> 00:15:10.559
I read my Bible today.
00:15:12.480 --> 00:15:14.960
But you read that just a lot for yourself.
00:15:15.279 --> 00:15:16.320
I've been there.
00:15:16.639 --> 00:15:18.720
But have you ever read the Bible?
00:15:20.399 --> 00:15:27.519
And I love our the study we're doing with the five questions before we start.
00:15:27.600 --> 00:15:31.279
It just prepares us for reading our Bible.
00:15:32.240 --> 00:15:41.679
Says, Lord, help me today as I hear your word, help your word change my thoughts, my actions, my desires.
00:15:45.279 --> 00:15:49.120
If there's something in my life that is wrong, point that out to me.
00:15:49.360 --> 00:15:53.600
And it gets us ready for our time of reading.
00:15:54.399 --> 00:16:02.960
Just yesterday I was reading it in the Psalms and just being encouraged, and then I read in a little bit of the same story in 1 Samuel.
00:16:03.519 --> 00:16:10.240
And it's funny, when my heart is ready to go into my quiet time, how much more I get out of my quiet time.
00:16:11.840 --> 00:16:13.120
And it never fails.
00:16:13.279 --> 00:16:16.799
When my heart is right in my quiet time, guess what?
00:16:17.279 --> 00:16:22.480
I do a lot better job of responding throughout the day.
00:16:22.720 --> 00:16:23.519
And guess what?
00:16:23.600 --> 00:16:25.919
It has very little to do with me.
00:16:28.879 --> 00:16:30.960
It's because I'm in the presence of the Lord.
00:16:31.120 --> 00:16:33.279
He changed me that morning, and guess what?
00:16:33.519 --> 00:16:35.840
It carries on throughout the day.
00:16:36.159 --> 00:16:39.440
I was telling the students I was able to talk to them on Wednesday.
00:16:39.679 --> 00:16:46.320
It's amazing how I can do the same thing twice and have a different reaction.
00:16:47.519 --> 00:16:58.000
When I'm in the presence of the Lord and having a quiet time, let's say later on the day I can be hammering and I can smash my thumb, and let me tell you, it still hurts.
00:16:59.919 --> 00:17:01.440
But I'm controlled.
00:17:02.159 --> 00:17:12.480
But have you ever been there those times that I'm not in the presence of the Lord, not having my quiet time, and I hit my thumb and it still hurts, and things come out of my mouth that should not?
00:17:12.640 --> 00:17:14.000
What's the difference?
00:17:16.960 --> 00:17:18.799
It's the picture of what I'm trying to say here.
00:17:18.960 --> 00:17:22.000
What does it look like to seek God's presence?
00:17:23.759 --> 00:17:36.480
And then number four, I think a huge thing that we take for granted, granted, is God is holy.
00:17:37.440 --> 00:17:39.680
Think about that just for a second.
00:17:41.759 --> 00:17:47.200
I think Isaiah 40, I could have read the whole Isaiah 40, but I'm only going to read one verse.
00:17:47.279 --> 00:17:48.160
But listen to this.
00:17:48.400 --> 00:17:51.519
Isaiah 40, 28 says this.
00:17:53.759 --> 00:17:55.359
Have you not known?
00:17:55.680 --> 00:17:57.039
Have you not heard?
00:17:57.359 --> 00:18:05.680
The everlasting God, the Lord, the creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary.
00:18:06.640 --> 00:18:10.480
His understanding is unsearchable.
00:18:11.039 --> 00:18:22.160
You know, as we started reading, I've never really got into this, but as we started reading this, the chronological Bible this time, I've never even noticed this, but what do they call God?
00:18:23.279 --> 00:18:24.480
Yahweh.
00:18:25.119 --> 00:18:40.240
But if you really look at it, when they talk about God, they don't even use vows in Yahweh because there is no word that can describe God and who He is and His holiness.
00:18:42.240 --> 00:18:49.599
And so many times, and myself included, if I'm not careful, me and God are on the same level.
00:18:49.920 --> 00:18:51.119
We're peers.
00:18:54.640 --> 00:19:02.559
I forget sometimes the righteous, reverence, fear that I should have of the holy, just, perfect God.
00:19:03.519 --> 00:19:14.000
I was at a student deal one time, and the guy was up giving a testimony, and he was doing a good job, and then all of a sudden he says, I have such a great relationship with God, I don't call him God anymore.
00:19:14.160 --> 00:19:16.079
I call him G Dog.
00:19:17.200 --> 00:19:19.920
And I started looking around for lightning.
00:19:22.400 --> 00:19:24.079
You hear what you do now.
00:19:24.400 --> 00:19:32.880
God wants a relationship with us, but not to the point that I change him to be like me.
00:19:34.960 --> 00:19:41.279
So then that leads us to number five.
00:19:41.839 --> 00:19:45.359
God's presence brings blessings.
00:19:45.839 --> 00:19:53.279
And it starts with this the holy, just perfect God wants a relationship with me.
00:19:54.000 --> 00:19:55.759
You know, that blows my mind.
00:19:56.640 --> 00:20:02.480
I can sit up here with my pink tie on and impress you, which I'm probably not, but I can.
00:20:04.480 --> 00:20:15.839
If you knew what was going on here and sometimes in here, you would be with me realizing how in the world can a holy, just, perfect God want to have a relationship with me.
00:20:17.680 --> 00:20:19.359
You get where I'm going with this?
00:20:19.599 --> 00:20:20.880
The holy, just, perfect.
00:20:21.200 --> 00:20:27.200
And this is why the Bible says all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
00:20:28.319 --> 00:20:32.079
God loved us so much that He gave us a way to still what?
00:20:32.319 --> 00:20:35.039
Have a relationship with Him.
00:20:36.960 --> 00:20:46.480
Students, what a gift! And many of you, we've been I've been fortunate to get to baptize you.
00:20:47.279 --> 00:20:56.880
And so many times we can get running so fast it becomes about us and we forget about who God is and the love that God has for us.
00:20:58.319 --> 00:21:03.920
God's presence is not to bring judgment, even though it can.
00:21:05.839 --> 00:21:08.799
God's presence is to bring about a blessing.
00:21:12.079 --> 00:21:18.400
Listen to what happens forward, some, in 1 Chronicles 15, 13.
00:21:20.160 --> 00:21:21.839
David says this.
00:21:29.759 --> 00:21:38.079
Because we did not consult him about the proper order, the right procedure.
00:21:38.400 --> 00:21:40.559
David finally realized what?
00:21:40.960 --> 00:21:45.359
He forgot everything except who God was.
00:21:48.480 --> 00:21:53.839
And if I understand right, I was not there, but it was a party when they did it right.
00:21:58.960 --> 00:22:02.640
Um About a year and a half ago.
00:22:02.960 --> 00:22:10.000
Well, actually, about two years ago or so, my daughter and my son-in-law had a baby.
00:22:10.960 --> 00:22:19.200
And it was for a year he stayed in the NICU, just battling through different things.
00:22:19.279 --> 00:22:24.400
And Lisa and I's anniversary was coming up, and we were praying through should we go, should we stay?
00:22:24.640 --> 00:22:30.240
He was doing better at that time, still in the hospital, so we went 10 hours away.
00:22:30.480 --> 00:22:32.240
And we were having a great time.
00:22:32.480 --> 00:22:41.279
And all of a sudden, Pacey calls and says, Hey dad, they've put Caseen on palatal, or they're thinking about putting Caseon on palatal care.
00:22:41.359 --> 00:22:43.119
There's nothing else they can do.
00:22:44.000 --> 00:22:45.920
We're supposed to call the family.
00:22:46.880 --> 00:22:47.920
I'll never forget.
00:22:48.000 --> 00:22:51.839
We get the phone call, we're 10 hours away, we get in the car, we start driving.
00:22:52.079 --> 00:23:03.599
And I'm just going to tell you, it's easy for me to look at the story of David and be critical of David, but in this particular instance, when the call came, I'll be honest, when I got in the car, I was angry at God.
00:23:04.160 --> 00:23:05.119
I was mad.
00:23:05.599 --> 00:23:06.400
God, really?
00:23:06.640 --> 00:23:12.240
We've battled for almost a year, and we're still gonna do this, and now we're gonna call in the family.
00:23:12.480 --> 00:23:14.720
Now he's not gonna make it.
00:23:18.559 --> 00:23:24.400
And we start gradually driving, not talking.
00:23:25.279 --> 00:23:35.920
And I switch from anger, and I see in Davis to a fear like I'll be honest, I was doubting what I believe.
00:23:37.119 --> 00:23:38.960
I was frustrated.
00:23:41.359 --> 00:23:50.640
And about five hours into it, the Lord started saying, I got this.
00:23:53.599 --> 00:24:02.000
And when we talk about just being in his presence, we were listening to the Christian radio station, just hearing songs as we drove, the Lord just kept.
00:24:02.640 --> 00:24:08.400
For by the time we get to Little Rock to go into the hospital, I was in a way different place.
00:24:09.039 --> 00:24:15.200
Because I realized how holy God was, that he knew what was best for me.
00:24:15.920 --> 00:24:18.000
I just need to let him be God.
00:24:20.559 --> 00:24:25.519
I walked in the hospital, we said a prayer, because I had no idea what was going to be said.
00:24:25.920 --> 00:24:37.200
But I was to the point now, if God wanted to take Case and He knew what was best for Caseon, if he was going to leave Casein, he knew what was best for Matt Passmore.
00:24:39.519 --> 00:24:48.160
And I had to get into the point or the space in my life that he was holy and he knew what was best.
00:24:50.079 --> 00:24:55.839
Today, as we close, listen to this.
00:24:56.400 --> 00:25:10.400
Obedience to God proves our love for him, it demonstrates our faithfulness to him and glorifies him to the world.
00:25:11.519 --> 00:25:16.960
And it opens avenues of blessing for us.
00:25:17.920 --> 00:25:48.079
Listen, as we look at David's story, the first time he messed up, but our gracious, perfect God forgave him, gave him a second chance, and the second time he was able to bring it back successfully, and the whole time he did that, he honored and he praised the Lord.
00:25:48.400 --> 00:25:51.759
If you'll bow your heads with me today, bow your heads.
00:26:01.359 --> 00:26:23.440
Maybe there's an area in your life that you realize, whether that's through things you're going through your life, or just an area in your life that you know you're living in rebellion with God, and you've got to realize that God wants a relationship with you, and He is a holy, just God, and we should be grateful for that relationship.
00:26:24.000 --> 00:26:26.240
So today I just want you to get right with God.
00:26:26.640 --> 00:26:27.759
Get where are you at?
00:26:27.839 --> 00:26:32.960
And then I want to say this if you have never came to know Christ today, I want to challenge you today.
00:26:33.119 --> 00:26:37.200
We're gonna have men in the aisles, Pastor Leonard, to come pray with.
00:26:40.319 --> 00:26:42.799
Dear God, I just come before you today.
00:26:43.200 --> 00:26:44.640
Thankful for your word.
00:26:45.440 --> 00:26:51.920
Thank you that you want to have a relationship with us, and Lord, thank you that you are holy and perfect.
00:26:53.359 --> 00:27:09.599
Lord, we want to come before you today and worship you as we sing and honor you as you sing, because living in your presence is so much better than living in our own.
00:27:12.240 --> 00:27:13.039
Thank you, Lord.
00:27:13.119 --> 00:27:14.559
In Jesus' name we're praying.
00:27:14.880 --> 00:27:15.519
Amen.
00:27:16.319 --> 00:27:20.960
We pray this message has been a blessing to you and helped to strengthen your walk with Jesus.
00:27:21.119 --> 00:27:23.920
Please know we want to minister to you and pray for you.
00:27:24.079 --> 00:27:31.440
Send an email to contact us at fsfbc.org and let us pray for you and help you in any way we can.
00:27:31.920 --> 00:27:37.920
Thank you for listening to Chapter and First, the Bible Teaching Ministry of Fort Smith's First Baptist Church.
