00:00:00.221 --> 00:00:14.096
I have learned so much from my fellow franchisees, so that's actually part of the magic of being a part of a franchise system is not just what you learn from the brand, which should be very robust, very thorough, very methodical.
00:00:14.096 --> 00:00:21.125
Good franchises offer a very detailed, step-by-step, layered way of learning this new business.
00:00:33.814 --> 00:00:41.981
Today we're talking to a small business owner that also helps other small business owners discover and determine if they should be small business owners and how to buy a franchise.
00:00:41.981 --> 00:00:45.070
So today is Leslie Cuban and I am so excited to talk to you.
00:00:45.070 --> 00:00:47.145
Leslie Chrissy, thanks so much for having me.
00:00:47.145 --> 00:00:53.411
Oh, absolutely so in 30 seconds or less, can you tell me what you do and how you got started doing what you do?
00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:54.982
I would love to Thank you.
00:00:54.982 --> 00:00:58.331
So I help people who want to be entrepreneurs.
00:00:58.331 --> 00:01:02.926
Usually they've had a career in corporate America but now don't want to work for the man anymore.
00:01:02.926 --> 00:01:04.207
They want to work for themselves.
00:01:04.207 --> 00:01:09.900
I helped them figure out if one of the 3,800 opportunities in franchising could work for them Wow.
00:01:09.900 --> 00:01:12.228
So how did you find franchising?
00:01:12.228 --> 00:01:13.843
Through my family.
00:01:13.843 --> 00:01:16.411
Actually, it's been in my blood since I was eight years old.
00:01:16.411 --> 00:01:20.489
My dad, like a lot of the people I'm working with now.
00:01:20.489 --> 00:01:22.352
He had a great corporate career.
00:01:22.352 --> 00:01:31.689
Internal division mergers impacted his career path in a way that didn't suit him, so that had him look for what can I do on my own?
00:01:31.689 --> 00:01:33.459
And that led to franchising.
00:01:33.459 --> 00:01:46.513
So I grew up in small business, family business and different industries in franchising and for about the past 20 years I now still own a franchise in franchise advisory.
00:01:46.513 --> 00:01:53.361
There's a franchise business window in a window, other people to franchise and, and so that's how I got started.
00:01:53.862 --> 00:01:54.144
Okay.
00:01:54.144 --> 00:02:01.048
So, having grown up in a family business environment, how has your experience shaped your approach to working with other family businesses?
00:02:01.048 --> 00:02:03.983
I would assume that a lot of franchisors franchisees start as family businesses too.
00:02:03.983 --> 00:02:05.046
Right, most are family businesses.
00:02:05.046 --> 00:02:07.793
I would assume that a lot of franchisors franchisees start as family businesses too.
00:02:07.813 --> 00:02:11.661
Right, most are family businesses and that may mean couples, you know, partners working together.
00:02:11.661 --> 00:02:28.030
It could be like my situation parent-child relationship in a business, you know, and it's a double-edged sword, like on the one hand you know family, you know family, blood is thicker than water, so there's a loyalty factor, there can be a trust factor there.
00:02:28.030 --> 00:02:36.534
But, especially in a parent-child business relationship, sometimes the parent still acts like the parent and the child still acts like the child, or vice versa.
00:02:36.534 --> 00:02:40.191
So there can be some weird family dynamic stuff.
00:02:40.191 --> 00:02:44.110
But in my experience the pros have definitely outweighed the cons.
00:02:45.319 --> 00:02:49.610
So can you talk to me a little bit why people would buy a franchise or create a franchise?
00:02:49.610 --> 00:02:50.051
Either one.
00:02:51.681 --> 00:02:53.768
So we'll start with the first one there.
00:02:53.768 --> 00:02:54.471
Why would they buy?
00:02:54.471 --> 00:03:00.406
For a lot of people they want to be an entrepreneur but they've never done it before and they don't necessarily.
00:03:00.406 --> 00:03:21.987
They may not have the idea, they might not have the burning passion to go out and start a business in XYZ industry, so they need somebody else's idea, or they may not have the risk tolerance to start their own endeavor from the ground up with good franchise systems and not all of them are, but with good franchise systems there's a lot.
00:03:21.987 --> 00:03:22.329
There.
00:03:22.329 --> 00:03:23.532
There's a business model.
00:03:23.532 --> 00:03:24.909
There's proven marketing strategies.
00:03:24.909 --> 00:03:25.819
There's proven marketing strategies.
00:03:25.819 --> 00:03:31.509
There's proven hiring strategies Things that someone doesn't have to learn completely on their own.
00:03:32.800 --> 00:03:36.230
And why would someone become a franchise or create a franchise?
00:03:37.080 --> 00:03:40.790
So there's good reasons and not such good reasons to do that.
00:03:40.790 --> 00:03:45.092
So entrepreneurs will consider how do I scale my business?
00:03:45.092 --> 00:03:56.429
And one avenue is franchising, becoming the franchisor, selling licenses to other aspiring entrepreneurs and growing the brand and spreading the mission of the business.
00:03:56.429 --> 00:04:02.709
You know, some do it to raise capital and that's not a good reason to you.
00:04:02.709 --> 00:04:07.901
An entrepreneur should not be reliant on the franchise fees, the initial fees that franchisees pay.
00:04:07.901 --> 00:04:09.926
But some people will do that.
00:04:09.926 --> 00:04:13.562
They look at franchising as this capital growth strategy.
00:04:14.364 --> 00:04:26.221
I think for a lot of entrepreneurs they do see it as an effective way of growing beyond their own means, beyond their own talent, beyond their own time, beyond their own capital.
00:04:26.221 --> 00:04:31.480
But they still have to be well capitalized to do it well, to be the franchisor and to do that well.
00:04:31.480 --> 00:04:35.187
So I think the motive is this is a way to grow.
00:04:35.187 --> 00:04:36.891
It's a way to spread.
00:04:36.891 --> 00:04:43.449
You know, spread our story, bring our products and services that we love to other communities.
00:04:43.449 --> 00:04:51.779
So there usually is a passion for delivering their product or service and a passion for helping other people to be entrepreneurs.
00:04:51.779 --> 00:04:54.709
But it has to be done responsibly for it to work well.
00:04:55.379 --> 00:04:55.439
Wow.
00:04:55.439 --> 00:05:06.860
So in the time I've spent with you you've educated me a fair amount on franchises and you've talked about some different misconceptions that you know it's not all fast food and it's not a passive investment.
00:05:06.860 --> 00:05:25.661
So can you elaborate more on those points and kind of give the listeners some opportunity to learn about how you help business owners determine if owning a franchise is their next business venture is a great step, if leaving corporate America and becoming a small business owner is the right step for them?
00:05:26.723 --> 00:05:27.466
Lots to unpack.
00:05:27.466 --> 00:05:44.103
Yeah, so you know, on the food, the food topic this is a conversation I have every single day in my business that when most people, if they haven't really looked at this yet at all, if they hear franchise, they're thinking we're going to be talking about French fries or sandwich sandwiches.
00:05:44.103 --> 00:05:48.574
So which which I understand that perception, because that's those are the big stories.
00:05:48.574 --> 00:05:54.574
You know, those are the big, visible, iconic examples.
00:05:54.613 --> 00:06:15.074
When you think of franchise and in the world I'll speak to just North America franchises born in North America there's about 3800 of them and about half of them are in some kind of food restaurant or food retail kind of space which leads the other half largely in service industries.
00:06:15.074 --> 00:06:17.524
So you know, food is not for everybody.
00:06:17.524 --> 00:06:19.411
In fact, food is not for a lot of people.
00:06:19.411 --> 00:06:46.778
Yeah, so what people are typically surprised by is how many other categories, such as a slew of home services franchises, all kinds of business services franchises catering to the needs of other businesses there's a lot of what I would call consumer services or personal services would be things like pet care or fitness or education or even some healthcare types of businesses.
00:06:46.778 --> 00:06:51.353
So you don't have to be into food to be a good candidate to consider franchises.
00:06:51.394 --> 00:07:03.574
So, as you have, thought about, or all of the experience that you have with 3,800 franchises and I know FranNet does a lot of those different franchises Is there ever a category that you're like, wow, I never thought that would be a franchise.
00:07:04.516 --> 00:07:14.875
Yes, I recently learned of a well, I shouldn't say recently, but one of the ones that really surprised me was there's a roll-off dumpster, port-a-potty combination type of business model.
00:07:14.875 --> 00:07:15.536
Yes, I've seen that.
00:07:15.536 --> 00:07:17.240
So that's a franchise.
00:07:17.240 --> 00:07:18.182
That is a franchise.
00:07:18.182 --> 00:07:28.922
Oh yes, there are franchises in cost business, cost analysis and reduction, okay, all kinds of professional services that you wouldn't necessarily think, well, that's a franchise.
00:07:28.922 --> 00:07:40.413
So really, the only kinds of industries where I don't see franchising being an appropriate model are industries that change so rapidly.
00:07:40.413 --> 00:07:43.521
So software, you know, high tech type stuff.
00:07:43.521 --> 00:07:53.449
It changes every day and they may use these technologies in a franchise business model, but the service itself just doesn't make sense.
00:07:53.449 --> 00:07:55.494
So there's all kinds of good stuff.
00:07:57.137 --> 00:08:00.923
So let's go back to that other misconception that a franchise is an absolute.
00:08:00.923 --> 00:08:02.494
Like you start, as a passive investment.
00:08:02.494 --> 00:08:04.021
Can you give us some education on that?
00:08:04.483 --> 00:08:13.572
I get lots of calls that I think people think well, it's a system, it's a process, it's already baked, so that must mean that it doesn't.
00:08:13.572 --> 00:08:15.620
I don't have to do much as the owner.
00:08:15.620 --> 00:08:20.497
And the truth, this is education conversations I have all the time with people that.
00:08:20.497 --> 00:08:33.657
So there are opportunities that are structured for people who perhaps have a full time career or they own other businesses and the franchise is not going to be their only or primary gig even.
00:08:33.657 --> 00:08:38.714
But you still have to have the guidance I give people in that first year of launching that business.
00:08:38.714 --> 00:08:43.009
You need to have 25 hours a week that you can dedicate to the business.
00:08:43.129 --> 00:08:54.852
That doesn't mean you have to be physically on site Okay, in fact there are a lot of these models where if the owner is physically there too much, they're in the way and disempowering their employees.
00:08:54.852 --> 00:09:02.839
So but it does mean one has to have enough flexibility in their day job schedule to take the calls from your manager.
00:09:02.839 --> 00:09:07.697
I mean, especially in that first year of business where you're probably going to have some hiring misfires.
00:09:07.697 --> 00:09:19.815
It takes some time to get that that rockstar team in place and there's going to be fires that you're putting out on a day-to-day basis for any new business, including the most well tooled franchise model.
00:09:19.815 --> 00:09:27.570
So people just have to be real holistic, that there there is a level of time commitment that they have to be able to give their new business if it's going to succeed.
00:09:27.570 --> 00:09:29.092
So it's not passive, no.
00:09:29.653 --> 00:09:40.634
So is there a little bit of misconception between business owners that Rick and Mortar started their business it is not a franchise and individuals that own a franchise.
00:09:40.634 --> 00:09:41.437
Have you noticed that?
00:09:41.437 --> 00:09:43.850
Do you see any of that between like, do they?
00:09:43.850 --> 00:09:46.879
Do they speak the same language or they have misconceptions about each other?
00:09:47.330 --> 00:09:49.498
Do you mean independent owners versus franchise?
00:09:49.498 --> 00:09:50.977
Yeah, you know the terms.
00:09:50.977 --> 00:09:52.929
I don't Thank you for the education.
00:09:52.929 --> 00:09:54.153
So I mean yeah.
00:09:54.153 --> 00:09:59.692
So yeah, there's different dynamics in owning a business that's part of a franchise system.
00:09:59.692 --> 00:10:02.139
You you definitely have to be a team player.
00:10:02.139 --> 00:10:10.735
Okay, because you immediately have a business partner which is the franchise company from whom you bought the franchise license, and they expect you to follow rules.
00:10:10.735 --> 00:10:19.755
Right, yes, yes, the short answer is yes, but I think another misperception is that being a franchise owner is just like being an employee.
00:10:19.755 --> 00:10:20.539
It's not you're.
00:10:20.539 --> 00:10:23.192
You're making the decisions, running your business every day.
00:10:23.855 --> 00:10:27.710
There's actually quite a lot of creativity, even in franchise systems.
00:10:27.710 --> 00:10:28.392
Tell me more on.
00:10:28.392 --> 00:10:32.261
That works, particularly around community marketing, community involvement.
00:10:32.261 --> 00:10:35.799
You know things that would be considered marketing or lead generation.
00:10:35.799 --> 00:10:38.456
Business business evolves.
00:10:38.456 --> 00:10:39.821
Franchises have to evolve.
00:10:39.821 --> 00:10:42.991
They have to have new ways of addressing their markets.
00:10:42.991 --> 00:10:56.115
So you actually see quite a lot of collaborative creativity between franchisees and franchisors on how to offer new services to their customer base or reach their customers in new and different ways.
00:10:56.115 --> 00:10:59.096
So there is a lot of creative muscle that can get flexed.
00:10:59.136 --> 00:11:02.070
So you're telling me that it's not a completely solid box and a fence.
00:11:02.070 --> 00:11:06.910
So you have the ability to be creative, ability to have new ideas you can collaborate potentially with.
00:11:07.731 --> 00:11:20.394
There are exceptions, but I would say the rule is all businesses have to evolve to stay competitive, including franchises, and so that that is an ongoing collaborative effort between all the stakeholders.
00:11:20.937 --> 00:11:21.760
Okay, involved.
00:11:21.760 --> 00:11:29.182
So one of the things that you talked about earlier around franchising is education the ability, the training that a franchisor gives the franchisee.
00:11:29.182 --> 00:11:30.292
Did I say that right?
00:11:30.331 --> 00:11:30.613
Yes.
00:11:30.673 --> 00:11:41.442
Okay, can you speak a little bit more to that and kind of what makes a good franchisee in that education space and kind of makes it a good relationship, how that can work together.
00:11:41.950 --> 00:11:43.355
It goes back to being collaborative.
00:11:43.355 --> 00:11:47.379
Ok, you have to play nice in the sandbox with everybody else.
00:11:47.379 --> 00:11:57.422
You'll probably have other franchise owners in your market as well, so you've got to call and there's a great education, learning opportunity from all the parties.
00:11:57.422 --> 00:12:12.225
I have learned so much from my fellow franchisees, so that's actually part of the magic of being a part of a franchise system is not just what you learn from the brand, which should be very robust, very thorough, very methodical.
00:12:12.225 --> 00:12:19.224
Good franchises offer a very detailed, step-by-step, layered way of learning this new business.
00:12:19.490 --> 00:12:22.812
Most people entering into a franchise, they're choosing something that is new.
00:12:22.812 --> 00:12:29.230
Yeah, it's not a type of business that they worked in in their prior career, and that's usually part of the appeal.
00:12:29.230 --> 00:12:35.606
Actually, a lot of people have the desire to spread their wings and do something new, but they don't know how to do it.
00:12:35.606 --> 00:12:54.476
So that's what they're buying into the franchise system for is a robust initial and ongoing way of learning this new business to get up and running and be proficient with it quickly enough to be successful with it quickly enough to be successful.
00:12:54.476 --> 00:12:59.056
So, but I really want to underscore that one of the biggest benefits it yes, it comes from the franchise company from whom you bought the license.
00:12:59.056 --> 00:13:04.452
But equally, learning from your fellow franchisees is a huge benefit.
00:13:04.452 --> 00:13:06.519
I can certainly speak to that from my own experience.
00:13:06.519 --> 00:13:15.462
How many more we troubleshoot things together, we brainstorm things together, we try new marketing initiatives together, we vent to each other.
00:13:16.297 --> 00:13:17.863
So we go on vacation together.
00:13:19.697 --> 00:13:25.629
So the relationship aspect and how one can really round out their skill sets.
00:13:25.629 --> 00:13:50.610
So people come into franchises from different backgrounds, so John may bring a great finance background, whereas Joan has a sales and marketing background, and they're in each other's training cohorts and they are working together and you find that franchisees can really round out their skill sets by osmosis from working collaboratively with their fellow franchise owners.
00:13:51.815 --> 00:13:54.344
So let's pivot from working with the franchise owners.
00:13:54.344 --> 00:13:58.086
Let's talk about that initial step into purchasing a franchise.
00:13:58.086 --> 00:14:01.164
I know a lot of times with small business owners that are independent.
00:14:01.164 --> 00:14:03.682
Sometimes we create a business plan, we go to the SBA.
00:14:03.682 --> 00:14:04.203
We get money.
00:14:04.203 --> 00:14:10.388
Other times we bootstrap it or we get financing from different areas friends and family.
00:14:10.388 --> 00:14:20.123
Can you talk a little bit about the financing and some of the qualifications that happen through franchising, because it is a much more structured process than I'm just going to hang a shingle.
00:14:20.985 --> 00:14:21.186
Yes.
00:14:21.186 --> 00:14:52.370
So I would say it's actually largely similar to a non-franchised route of getting financing, with the exception of if we're talking about really large franchise brands I mean, the franchisor is not the bank but they very well may have relationships with banks, banking systems that know their brand, know their business plan, but it's really only about 6% of franchise systems that have over 500 open operating units.
00:14:52.370 --> 00:15:00.446
It's only about 25% of franchise brands that have 100 or more open and operating units.
00:15:00.547 --> 00:15:01.708
So, what's the average?
00:15:01.708 --> 00:15:03.397
So 25.
00:15:03.397 --> 00:15:10.711
Okay, 50% of franchise companies have 25 or less open units, so most so.
00:15:10.711 --> 00:15:16.724
When we're talking about franchises, we are still mostly talking about small companies, so I had no idea.
00:15:16.724 --> 00:15:18.347
Yes, that's a comment, that's a comp.
00:15:18.347 --> 00:15:21.644
You know, people think franchise, they think big, global, global brand.
00:15:21.644 --> 00:15:29.565
But you can count on your fingers and toes, really, the number of big global Dunkin Donuts, mcdonald's types brands.
00:15:29.666 --> 00:15:42.339
So with businesses like that, and even even when a brand has, I'd even say, 50 to 100 units open, there's enough of a pathway there that there may be a preferred banking relationship.
00:15:42.339 --> 00:15:48.278
However, getting the loan still largely depends on the borrower's capability.
00:15:48.278 --> 00:15:52.927
You still have to have credit, you still have to have liquidity, you still have to have income.
00:15:52.927 --> 00:16:00.780
There's a credit box that the bank is looking for from anybody who's borrowing money to start a business, whether it's a franchise or not.
00:16:00.780 --> 00:16:01.537
So it's still.
00:16:01.537 --> 00:16:07.505
I think the appropriate way to look at this is a good franchise system.
00:16:07.505 --> 00:16:09.381
The business plan can be helpful.
00:16:09.381 --> 00:16:13.423
It might expedite things, but it's still gonna come back to the borrower's personal balance sheet.
00:16:13.423 --> 00:16:14.024
Okay.
00:16:14.634 --> 00:16:21.846
So there's a lot of lessons that we can tie, whether we're independent small business owners or we're in the franchise world, that are very similar.
00:16:21.846 --> 00:16:23.450
There's a lot of parallels there are.
00:16:23.450 --> 00:16:25.081
Thank you for highlighting some of those.
00:16:25.081 --> 00:16:26.083
I've got another question.
00:16:26.083 --> 00:16:35.375
So, with franchising, you're dealing kind of with the relationship of franchise or franchisee as you're trying to figure things out, decide if you like certain franchises.
00:16:35.375 --> 00:16:39.274
It can almost be like dating, so you're kind of that matchmaker.
00:16:39.274 --> 00:16:50.821
So tell us a little bit more about what you do, how you lead individuals through the process and kind of how you can you matchmake them together and how they work through that anticipation of do I like this franchise?
00:16:50.821 --> 00:16:51.322
Do I not?
00:16:51.322 --> 00:16:52.085
Do they like me?
00:16:52.085 --> 00:16:53.399
How does that all work?
00:16:53.615 --> 00:16:56.544
Yes, it can be kind of like the Bachelor and there's a final rose.
00:16:56.544 --> 00:16:59.019
There's no rose ceremony though.
00:16:59.240 --> 00:17:00.504
No, oh, there should be.
00:17:00.504 --> 00:17:01.225
You should add that.
00:17:02.134 --> 00:17:03.557
So you know it can be.
00:17:03.557 --> 00:17:09.787
When someone is just first starting to think about this and start looking at it, it can be extremely overwhelming.
00:17:09.787 --> 00:17:15.154
Like I said, there's 3,800 possibilities and you go out on the internet and they all say they're the best one.
00:17:15.154 --> 00:17:17.875
So a methodical process.
00:17:17.875 --> 00:17:21.855
It actually doesn't start with any one industry or category.
00:17:21.855 --> 00:17:36.071
It really starts with the person, and I think, whether someone's getting help from a broker like myself or they're doing this on their own, the first step is to take a real self inventory, first of all, of your skills, your talents, what you're good at.
00:17:36.071 --> 00:17:40.469
When you envision yourself running a business, what do you envision yourself actually doing?
00:17:40.469 --> 00:17:42.035
Is it leading employees?
00:17:42.035 --> 00:17:43.037
Is it sales?
00:17:43.037 --> 00:17:44.519
Is it project management?
00:17:44.519 --> 00:17:51.432
So kind of giving some thought to skills that you have that you believe could transfer into running a business.
00:17:51.432 --> 00:17:52.215
Think about that.
00:17:53.037 --> 00:18:07.011
It's important to do a financial inventory getting a real handle on what is your family's cost of living, where your assets, updating a personal balance sheet for the not only going to the bank and the financing reasons, but the franchise is looking at that too.
00:18:07.011 --> 00:18:13.960
A good franchise really wants to carefully qualify any candidate to make sure that they're poised to succeed in their business.
00:18:13.960 --> 00:18:18.278
The last thing any brand or anybody wants is to come into this undercapitalized.
00:18:18.278 --> 00:18:20.442
So good brands are really looking at that.
00:18:20.442 --> 00:18:23.977
And then, what is your time availability?
00:18:23.977 --> 00:18:25.441
Like we talked about, it's not passive.
00:18:25.441 --> 00:18:27.486
So is this something that?
00:18:27.486 --> 00:18:31.242
Can you see yourself stepping into full time day one?
00:18:31.242 --> 00:18:32.306
Can you afford that?
00:18:32.306 --> 00:18:35.840
Can you afford to do that If this is a side gig?
00:18:35.840 --> 00:18:38.923
Again, do you have the capital to hire a general manager?
00:18:38.923 --> 00:18:46.929
Do you have the capital to sustain the added overhead by doing this semi actively, as we might say?
00:18:46.929 --> 00:19:01.862
So these are the sort of these are the sort of questions that I'm asking of people up front and we're building kind of a model or a criteria list of what elements need to exist in any business for it to be a possibility.
00:19:01.862 --> 00:19:07.825
And then that serves as the compass for what kinds of businesses that I'm going to recommend to people.
00:19:07.986 --> 00:19:17.497
Like, if someone's like I'm only going to do this part time, there are certain franchises that immediately come off the table because they cannot be started and operated part time.
00:19:17.497 --> 00:19:26.163
If someone most people are a geographic specific candidate, you know they, you know they don't want to drive two hours to this business.
00:19:26.163 --> 00:19:31.185
They want something that is reasonably close to where they live or where they want to be.
00:19:31.185 --> 00:19:36.386
So that is also a filter for what a person's options are going to be.
00:19:36.386 --> 00:19:43.429
If the closest open territory for your franchise of choice is 300 miles away, that's really not going to help you.
00:19:44.717 --> 00:19:48.227
So these are the sort of things that someone like myself knows what to ask.
00:19:48.227 --> 00:19:55.202
I know what the different variables are that people have to look at and what they have to look at together, and it's got.
00:19:55.202 --> 00:20:00.066
All these pieces of a puzzle have to all fit together in order for an opportunity to be the right one.
00:20:00.066 --> 00:20:10.821
So that's how I am helping people to lay the groundwork, so we know what to look for and then when we go look for it, we know that it's going to check these boxes up front.
00:20:16.855 --> 00:20:20.894
So one of the things as business owners we sometimes have to do is tell people no, no, you're not a fit.
00:20:20.894 --> 00:20:21.155
How do you?
00:20:21.155 --> 00:20:26.208
I'm sure it's come up in your career that you've had someone that's come in and said I want to buy a franchise and you're just like no.
00:20:26.208 --> 00:20:29.084
How do you tell someone no in that way?
00:20:29.414 --> 00:20:34.488
So I've become skilled at helping people select themselves out.
00:20:34.488 --> 00:20:50.804
They self-select out and a lot of it is just telling people the realities of what kind of money it's going to take, what kind of time it's going to take, what challenges you should expect, and some people, if they're honest with themselves, will look in the mirror.
00:20:50.804 --> 00:20:54.615
You should expect, and some people, if they're honest with themselves, will look in the mirror.
00:20:54.615 --> 00:20:56.317
And again, it's about being professional and polite.
00:20:56.317 --> 00:21:00.675
But sometimes you just have to tell people like, look, I'm going to back out of this process because I don't think I can help you be successful.
00:21:01.718 --> 00:21:02.078
Wow.
00:21:02.078 --> 00:21:12.355
So, as we wrap up, Leslie, I love that we give our listeners one thing like one usable skill, one usable nugget, something from your profession and what you're doing.
00:21:12.355 --> 00:21:15.463
So is there anything that you would like to tell the listeners?
00:21:15.463 --> 00:21:16.406
As the one last thing?
00:21:18.035 --> 00:21:21.765
You know, about six months ago I changed my personal schedule a little bit.
00:21:21.765 --> 00:21:33.887
I go to bed an hour earlier and I get up an hour earlier, okay, so I go to bed at nine and I get up at five not all the time, but most of the time and that extra hour in the morning is like having three extra hours in the morning.
00:21:33.887 --> 00:21:40.748
So that sounds simple, but it's actually been kind of a big game changer for me as a business leader, as a person.
00:21:40.748 --> 00:21:42.212
Well, thank, you.
00:21:42.433 --> 00:21:51.184
I appreciate you sharing that and thank you for sharing all your wisdom around franchising, how to work with franchisees, franchisors, and how to make that decision to become potentially a different business owner.
00:21:51.184 --> 00:21:51.786
Thanks a lot.
00:21:51.786 --> 00:21:53.088
Thank you so much for having me.
