00:00:05
Speaker 1: Welcome to this week three Friday edition of the From the Podium podcast.
00:00:09
Speaker 2: I'm Gabe Kolera.
00:00:10
Speaker 1: The Browns got their final day of practice in for the week in preparation for the Green Bay Packers coming to town this coming Sunday. On this episode, you heard from head coach Kevin Stefanski, offensive line coach Mike Bloomgren, safety's coach f From Bonda, defensive tackle Mason Graham, and defensive end Miles Garrett. We start with head coach Kevin Stefanski, who gave his final injury update for the Packers game.
00:00:31
Speaker 3: Okay, it's gonna be a great challenge down there Sunday. It's gonna be hot, you know, beautiful day for football. Excited about the opportunity that we have in front of us. We understand how talented this football team is. They're well coached. Obviously they're two and zero, and we have a lot of respect for them. So we have to play our best football, and I think the guys are working hard in that regard. Good week of practice and then obviously finishing touches the next day, and we'll see you guys at one o'clock that I'll take any questions and CAF injury show up. Yeah, during practice felt something. We'll get to MRI and see what it is.
00:01:09
Speaker 4: Are your planning on bringing some kickers into.
00:01:12
Speaker 5: I think it's premature to say.
00:01:18
Speaker 2: Joel could potentially play because you'd try to see he has so much experience, right, yes, and yesterday he'd felt better from Wednesday to Thursday.
00:01:26
Speaker 5: You know, if he's still he's progressing.
00:01:28
Speaker 3: But with this type of injury, you need to make sure find out where he is every single days.
00:01:34
Speaker 6: Any more details on.
00:01:37
Speaker 3: Yeah, no, nothing, uh notable mary kay felt something. We're doing the appropriate thing, getting him, getting a look at it with some imaging and we'll go from there.
00:01:49
Speaker 7: Here.
00:01:50
Speaker 8: Just what is that like?
00:01:52
Speaker 6: You have to get somebody ready.
00:01:54
Speaker 3: To go on such short Yeah, well, we'll get the imaging back first, see what it says and will adjust accordingly.
00:02:02
Speaker 2: Okay, further ahead than he was last week at this.
00:02:05
Speaker 3: Time, he's doing a nice job working every single day. But again that's one that we'll have to see over the next forty eight.
00:02:13
Speaker 7: Hold.
00:02:13
Speaker 9: DeAndre will be out of the protocolself.
00:02:16
Speaker 3: I think it's best to just follow the protocol on those type of things. He's done everything that has been asked of him. But we'll make sure we just follow the protocol.
00:02:26
Speaker 6: We're special teams.
00:02:27
Speaker 10: Obviously, this is another little hit to your special teams and not normal. It's been having care but just talk about how challenging it's then to have lose DeAndre and have the issue.
00:02:38
Speaker 3: Corey, Yeah, I would say that's football. Mary kay Uh unfortunately.
00:02:42
Speaker 11: Uh.
00:02:42
Speaker 3: Injuries are part of this game. Are guys out for whatever the reason. They broke a shoelace, so the next man has to be ready to go.
00:02:50
Speaker 6: You have that next man up in particular, Corney Lace Lucas. What's it like for you guys to have a veteran that can step up if if need be.
00:03:00
Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you said it there, Cam veteran. He's been through it all, he's seen it all. Talented football players, so was ready when called upon and will be this week if called upon as well.
00:03:13
Speaker 12: On the other side of things, it looks like Craft might be a question for them if he can play after getting hurt yesterday. Obviously they don't have free like that offense. Still, what do you see and how do you evaluate it?
00:03:24
Speaker 2: Knowing?
00:03:25
Speaker 3: Yeah, we expect everybody, as you know, to play and we have a he's a great player. We think very highly of their tight end room. That whole group is really good. They have weapons, they always spread the ball around. That's kind of their pass attack is not focused on one person.
00:03:42
Speaker 2: Coming up. What happened last week and it's gonna be hot again. Is there anything that he needs to do or can do leading up to the game to make.
00:03:48
Speaker 7: Sure that just happened.
00:03:49
Speaker 3: I think all of our guys, Scott are working hard and fueling up their bodies and making sure they're ready to go. It's gonna be hot for both teams, so you just need to take care of which got to take care of to rotate.
00:04:00
Speaker 5: Dewinding him well.
00:04:02
Speaker 2: Kind of evolved with Winch set in the running back mooove.
00:04:05
Speaker 9: Do you do you believe in different roles for different guys like on the on the script?
00:04:09
Speaker 2: Do you believe in a hot hand kind of what's your general thought and using multiple bags?
00:04:13
Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it really depends on who you have.
00:04:18
Speaker 3: I can remember being a young fan of Duce Staley when he was splitting time with Brian Westbrook and Carell Buckholder. Uh, they had a three headed monster back then, so Deuce has kind of seen it all. I trust deuce to the point of the hot hand. We like our guys. We like the skill sets that our guys have, so uh, there there is a balance there and making sure you're putting all the guys in the right position to succeed.
00:04:42
Speaker 2: See Miles every day. We know what a game rerecord he is.
00:04:46
Speaker 13: Parsons is the same kind of guy, and what is the Is there one characteristic that makes those two kind of stand out amongst those public past rushers in the league.
00:04:54
Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, you always want to be careful comparing guys. Uh, we to see Miles every day. To your point, Tom, special athletes. Obviously, these guys are so competitive. I think that's the other piece of this, and just how hard they play this game. So I would prefer just to talk about our guy who is playing at a very high level and playing hard and making plays in the run of the past. They are so talented. Michael Parsons is elite. We have a ton of respect for him. They're they're great players.
00:05:26
Speaker 8: He set back with my callers as part of the plan and not practicing the last two days.
00:05:30
Speaker 5: Yeah, all part of the plan.
00:05:32
Speaker 2: Talked about how you're trying to endorse complimentary football and said that, you know, you're making players compliment each other dirty beatings. Where did that come from?
00:05:42
Speaker 3: And you know why he's not supposed to be giving away my secrets not exactly the same word, but for the sake of the argument, just feel like it's important for our team to be understand to understand that this is a team game and we need to do things that set our teammates up. And uh, you know, we need our defense to set up our offense just like we need our offense to set up our defense. And special teams are so big when you're talking about field positions.
00:06:07
Speaker 5: So just making a point.
00:06:08
Speaker 3: About how we need each other in this team sport, uh, and how this it works on Sundays when you can feed.
00:06:16
Speaker 5: Off of each other complimenting for so far.
00:06:19
Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not going to give it away. It was somebody got fined for one of the compliments. It was a coach too, Tommy Reese.
00:06:27
Speaker 2: You talked about the Packers offensive scheme the other day, you were you were complimenting it. What do you like best about what woul they do over their skinematic?
00:06:36
Speaker 3: Yeah, Coach Lafour has always done a great job really going back to when he was a coordinator and then they're in Green Bay. They they really do believe in the marriage of the run in the pass, and that comes true with with their run game and their play actions. They do an excellent job of pre snap motion with wide receivers, with tight ends, with running backs. So there's just a lot that goes into it. And ultimately, with offensive football, you're trying to make it look hard on the defense and be simple for you, and I think I'm sure the way they teach it, it's simple for them, but it does present challenges.
00:07:10
Speaker 6: Correct think, and they also have read out. What do you think that means for their offense?
00:07:16
Speaker 3: Yeah, I would kind of when you look at their offense, Mary Kay, I think that there have great players across the board that they do a really good job of spreading the ball around. They have talented players at all positions that touch it. So just kind of to the previous point, it's very sound system, So it's not I don't think their offense, or like our offense, is about one person.
00:07:42
Speaker 8: I think the CBS broadcast for the last game said that, in regards to your rookie quarterback involvement, if you have an air type plan down to the minute.
00:07:50
Speaker 2: I was curious.
00:07:51
Speaker 8: You know, it's one thing to have one rookie quarterback in the room, to have it too and even Bailey as like a semi young quarterback. Are you drawing from any influence when when a kind of creating that.
00:08:01
Speaker 5: Plan for development from what was that?
00:08:03
Speaker 8: Do you have any influences from your past when it comes to, you know, creating the plan to develop these guys, even women are not.
00:08:09
Speaker 5: Playing, not necessarily.
00:08:12
Speaker 3: I think the big thing for us, it goes back to that intentionality of what we do. And that's Bill Musgrave, that's Tommy Reese, that's our player development team. Everybody understanding that we're bringing our guys along and it may mean it may on one day, mean meetings may on one day mean a physical individual drill if you will at practice while this side's doing this, these guys are doing that. So just like a big picture, being very intentional about every minute that you have.
00:08:42
Speaker 5: If Tucker can Craft can't go, maybe you done.
00:08:45
Speaker 4: You're going to see a lot of Luke Musgrave, how much as is his uncle give.
00:08:51
Speaker 3: Him pretty pretty special there for Coach Musk to have his nephew plane on Sunday.
00:08:59
Speaker 5: You know, speaks for very highly of the young man.
00:09:01
Speaker 3: As you would imagine, I did threaten that must would play him in practice this week and put a jersey on him. But yeah, it's a pretty special moment for their for their family.
00:09:12
Speaker 14: Of the four early Induces Tenure were band of him growing what's it been like working within knowing that you have that you had that connection to him as kid.
00:09:20
Speaker 3: Yeah, Deuce and I have a lot of mutual friends in the business, and so I knew a lot about him obviously growing up, but also as a professional in this in this profession as a coach, I should say, Uh, we've both worked with a lot of the same people, and just who he is every day is the same guy and he brings it every single day. He brings the juice to the field that you guys see, brings the juice to the meetings which you guys don't see.
00:09:44
Speaker 5: But he's a valuable member to our team.
00:09:47
Speaker 10: Really, guys did such a nice job of Derrick Henry.
00:09:52
Speaker 6: Does that inform what might happen against Josh Jacob?
00:09:56
Speaker 3: I think every challenge is unique, Mary Kay. Josh Jacobs is outstanding. He has unbelievable patience, vision, power, speed, quickness, he fights for extra yards. They can use him in a variety of ways. He's he's really, really, really talented.
00:10:12
Speaker 2: Have you noticed this run the Guardians I've put together.
00:10:15
Speaker 3: I haven't paid attention. I go, you know, every morning, I'll check the standings. But as you know this, it's that time of year where it's fun when you start staring at the standings and start thinking about what the postseason might mean for your team. So yeah, we're definitely watching those guys offensively.
00:10:32
Speaker 10: Did it look like an efficient operation this week, just in terms of syncing up the quarterback and receivers and not throwing picks and stuff like that.
00:10:42
Speaker 3: Well, I think to your I think what you need Mary Kay's precision in everything you do run game, pass game, but certainly the pass game you need precision.
00:10:52
Speaker 5: And that really does mean that the.
00:10:55
Speaker 3: Quarterback has to be on time with an accurate ball, receiver has to be at his depth with the right a technique, and the line has to hold up a protection. All those things to have precision where you can play on time and play with rhythm.
00:11:07
Speaker 1: Next, offensive line coach Mike Bloomgren discussed how they can get the run game going.
00:11:12
Speaker 4: I know you know, you for most of the training camp you had everybody around, but just the first two weeks you haven't had Jack for pretty much safe for that first possession, Dwan has sort of in and out there against Baltimore. Just how difficult is it once you get the gate to get that cohesiveness, that cohesion that you've needed to help the overall you know, the overall prices.
00:11:34
Speaker 14: Yeah, maybe I feel this way because I've worked with the position so long, but I think continuity that position, in particular, that position group where you need five guys to see the game through one set of eyes.
00:11:44
Speaker 15: Connuity's ideal. It's what we all want.
00:11:48
Speaker 14: I certainly feel like myself, Ben and Sanders are better coaches when we have our starters in there. You know, like everybody in this world, but we also know the reality of the National Football League. It's going to be a next man up and ideal situations don't always play out. So to answer your question, it's not ideal, but we also have trained people who are professional football players.
00:12:07
Speaker 15: It should be able to step in there and get it right.
00:12:09
Speaker 14: From a communication standpoint, I think when you talk about what Ethan Posik does by giving us clear points and a clear understanding to make sure we are seeing the game through one set of eyes, and that's his and the communication between Joel and the tackle and Wyatt and the tackle, those things like whoever's in there, those three vets are doing such a good job getting us on the same page.
00:12:30
Speaker 2: Says the run game through the first two weeks.
00:12:33
Speaker 14: Yeah, I don't think it's where we want it to be. You know, I won't won't lie to you there, And I think had too many times in the first game where we weren't hatted the way we wanted to be. I think you looked at what happened in the second game, and aside from the first series, I think we did a pretty good job getting hats on hats and moving some people. So I'm pleased with the progress from week one to two. And I think anytime you're that's really what you want to see from your group in all areas. Is the big growth from week one to week two. But there's certainly steps. I believe we can take.
00:13:02
Speaker 12: Packers and with them adding persons to that defensive front, Like what have you seen from him on film? And how much are they moving him around?
00:13:11
Speaker 7: Do you think?
00:13:11
Speaker 14: Yeah, I think typical Micah Parson stuff like you look at the breakdown in one game one versus game two, and one game he's primarily on the left, the next game is primarily on the right, and he's also going to be at the three technique. He's going to be over the center. He is everywhere. So what have I seen from them? I've seen thirty three quarterback pressures in eight sacks. It's a really really good front and that.
00:13:34
Speaker 16: There's been some miscommunications to missed assignments on the offense that's leading to some of these the ailments that you guys are looking to clean up. When you think about it, is it more miscommunication?
00:13:45
Speaker 6: Is it more you need to work on technique?
00:13:47
Speaker 16: Is it like, how do you clean that up in this week when you're looking at what has maybe gone wrong?
00:13:51
Speaker 14: Yeah, I think there's a lot of things, and it's almost play by play, and it's different people.
00:13:55
Speaker 15: It's not always the same person. It's nothing like that.
00:13:57
Speaker 14: It's you know, we've got to continue you get time on task with our reps and we've got to continue to have people do their job. I mean, at the end of the day, this is a business and it's a performance business, and we all know their jobs, and I got to do a better job making sure everybody knows who they're assigned to, how they're supposed to get there, and then we got to get them there.
00:14:16
Speaker 10: Dewan doing from a performance standpoint, and then also supposed to be really hot to get on Sunday, and might you guys have to give him a spell them a little bit occasionally.
00:14:26
Speaker 14: Again, Yeah, that rotation will come down to keV and what he thinks is best. I thought that was a good idea to kind of have the preemptive strike and get him some rest. You know, I thought it was I'm a kid from the South and I thought it was pretty warm the other day in Baltimore. And he's got one hundred and twenty pounds on me, so I can imagine he thought it was warm too. So again, we'll see what keV wants to do from a rotational standpoint. But you ask how he's playing, and I think, like you, look at the second half of football there in that game against the Ravens, and it's the best football we've seen from Dewan, with very good strain and some very good things. Now again there's still a repid pass pro. We've got to clean up. We've got to get to the point like this is not like an oh, good job, you're making progress. This is like you've got to get your job done every play in the National Football League, and especially at his position. We know how quickly everybody in the stadium will see it if he doesn't.
00:15:14
Speaker 2: This is the best half that you've seen from him. What was he doing better than you had seen earlier?
00:15:19
Speaker 14: You know, I think anytime you have an opportunity on a down block to take number zero kron Smith and put him into the ground on the other side of the formation, that's good stuff. And that's the violence and the expectation of physicality we have for our room. And so just to see him do those things and strain through some of the things, through the hot weather, and just continue to play and take steps in every area, not just the run game, but take some better steps in pass protection as well.
00:15:44
Speaker 15: And there's still so much more out there.
00:15:46
Speaker 14: There's no telling how much more progress we can make with Dewan, and we're going to keep working towards it.
00:15:51
Speaker 2: Good, Okay.
00:15:52
Speaker 12: I know Dewan and some of the other guys on that O line, like every year in training camp, they talk about going against Miles and how helpful that is. Like, I guess when you think about another addresser coming in like Micah and the other ones you guys have to face, Like, how helpful are those reps not just in the practice, but in giving guys confidence going up against guys like that.
00:16:12
Speaker 14: I'm not sure how much confidence you get from going against Miles, and it being my first training camp here, I would say I didn't enjoy every moment of training camp going against Miles. What an outstanding football player he is, and so glad he is going to be in our locker room on Sunday. But you're exactly right in terms of how it prepares you to go in elite to get versus an elite guy, and he jumps in there during one on ones at over the guard and over the center, much like we just talked about with Micah. So it is helpful to have one of those freak shows is where we'll line up across from me and give you the reps against somebody that is that dominant of a player.
00:16:47
Speaker 10: I have a guy like Michah that moves around as much as he does. Is the communication inheritive? How do you send help when you don't necessarily know where he's going to be from down to dat.
00:16:59
Speaker 15: Kay, you're asking for the game plan, We can't give you that.
00:17:02
Speaker 14: No, there's a lot of creativity that has to go into it, but the communication is a paramount, like anytime we want to find an opportunity to get extra hats on him.
00:17:12
Speaker 15: The other thing we can't sleep on is when.
00:17:13
Speaker 14: We talk about this front, we got to talk about fifty two for Shaun Gary too, Like he's a dominant football player and so the fact that they have both of them makes it even harder to address just one issue. So again, yeah, we've got some creative ways to do it in this plan and hopefully you like him on Sunday.
00:17:29
Speaker 4: Obviously, the hope Njole is going to be able to play, you know, on Sunday. The expectation is he will. But that said, if you know, the back tightens up or whatever, Tevin just what you know, how you know, what have you seen out of him work? You know, getting to work with him this this offseason, this draining camp.
00:17:48
Speaker 14: Yeah, Tevan's gotten better and better every week we've had a chance to work with him. Like you go back to the first preseason game and I didn't think he performed anywhere near he was capable of, and he's built on those performances and he's continued to grow. I think myself and the other coaches in the room have a lot of confidence in Tevin if he is the one out there. You know, the experience he had in Chicago, whether it's playing tackle or playing guard. This is a guy that's played a lot of football in this league and played good football, and we certainly would expect him to do the same. But I'm gonna be right there with you on Joel, Like I think Joel's playing as good a football as anybody in the National Football League at the guard position. I think Wyatt's really close behind him. So I love what those guards are doing, and we certainly want him out there. You know, we want Tevin to have whatever role we can get for him. But at the end of the day, like I believe this in my core, like Joel is like the modern gladiator. Like if he can walk, I believe he'll play on Sunday. And I appreciate that so much.
00:18:44
Speaker 9: Backup guards at center, he's been an act to these first couple of weeks. What does he need to do to kind of get called up.
00:18:50
Speaker 15: And just keep working.
00:18:51
Speaker 14: We love Zach and we love the progress he's making, you know, and again I've mentioned it to you before. I believe, like I don't feel like he had a rookie season last year. He certainly didn't have a rookie off seat. So he's not doing anything wrong. He's just continuing to grow into the NFL football player.
00:19:05
Speaker 15: We want him to be.
00:19:07
Speaker 2: Jack this week. And are you optimistic that he can get out?
00:19:10
Speaker 15: I don't know, you know, we'll see. We'll see how that thing goes.
00:19:13
Speaker 14: And he's another one, certainly a better coach when he's out there, so we'll see and ultimately Kevin and Jack will talk about that.
00:19:22
Speaker 1: I'm trying a.
00:19:22
Speaker 6: Bit about the tush push for a second and.
00:19:26
Speaker 10: What you've seen with you know, the Fass Stars, and is that something that you guys would try to do.
00:19:33
Speaker 6: Do you have that in your repertoire and what are your thoughts on?
00:19:37
Speaker 15: Yeah, the tush push.
00:19:39
Speaker 14: I'm not sure like Joe will be Jalen in that regard. You know, they're very different in terms of their makeup and everything else. So I don't know that we'd ever get to a point where we're asking Joe to to quarterback sneak at four or five times a game and have everybody pushing on him.
00:19:55
Speaker 15: But at the same time, like I think it's a very effective play.
00:19:57
Speaker 14: I have a lot of respect for how they run it. I just think there's more creative ways that we can do similar things and get the surge that we want, the physical get off that we want out of our.
00:20:07
Speaker 15: Four point stances where we're able to move people.
00:20:09
Speaker 14: I mean, that's what we talk about in short arge and goal line in our room is like we've got to if balls on the one yard line, we got to score with our man.
00:20:15
Speaker 15: We got to get our man to make.
00:20:16
Speaker 14: This job easy for the back and got a lot of confidence in our backs and then Q to run this thing downhill and go get a yard even if everybody fell down on the field, Like we got a lot of belief in him.
00:20:26
Speaker 15: So you combine those two things and we should have a.
00:20:29
Speaker 14: Good way to move the sticks and short arge and goal line and can continue to be able to excel in those situations.
00:20:33
Speaker 1: Safety's coach e from Bonda spoke on the veteran presence that Grant Delpit brings to the room.
00:20:39
Speaker 12: To start off talking about Brant and that play he makes in the end zone, like punching the ball out. What have you seen from him this season and especially in that Raymond's game after you know, he had some big words before the game too.
00:20:51
Speaker 17: Just a man that's going to back up his words, you know, that's what you respect about him. He's worked hard and has really pushed the group to emphasize getting you know, his hand, get our hands on the ball, and that was an op for him to work a technique that we put a lot of time in in the offseason and you saw it again yesterday and practice, just getting you know, punching and trying to get that buzzle. That's a huge play. I mean it's a point play. Took points off the board. So it's really awesome state chill, tough situation where you have Lamar in his legs and we got to count for that and then you know you do that, there's some grass back there and you got to do a great job finishing the play, you know, Like like granted, so proud of him.
00:21:32
Speaker 18: Back in his words up to what he is.
00:21:33
Speaker 17: He's a man of He's gonna say something going back it up.
00:21:37
Speaker 4: From Derrick Henry to Josh Jacobs, what is obviously size wise, there's a massive difference, But does the philosophy and how you approach stopping them change much at all?
00:21:50
Speaker 18: This is one of the best backs in the NFL. I really believe this.
00:21:52
Speaker 17: I mean, his vision coupled with his size a lot like Derrick Henry is elite. So your mentality of being really gang tackling, you know, mentality, but also sinking your teeth into the tackle and locking the jaw on a player like that is massive because if you don't, he's just gonna pull away and push through. But like Jim said, he's just got a really good knack of trusting where the hole is gonna be and bursting through it. And I think that's what makes him special, not only the fact that he can play all downs and he's big and he's strong and he's tough.
00:22:26
Speaker 2: That's great.
00:22:26
Speaker 9: Absolutely, we know he's so good like in the box, yeah, plus stoting scrimmage. But I know you also want him and coverage. You guys don't do the free and strong safety things.
00:22:33
Speaker 19: Now, how do you.
00:22:34
Speaker 9: Balance kind of want to near the line but also using him as kind of that deep safety.
00:22:38
Speaker 17: Yeah, we had someone in the room say strong, safety, free state down. I looked at him, like, we don't do that, you know, we're we're we're DB's And Grant's done a really good job in terms of growing his game in that space in the off season through a training camp and you're seeing it a little bit too now and as the season goes. So he's worked really hard at learning the third level stuff, but not just learning it. It's just a different mentality when you're back there. You gotta be a little bit more patient with your feet. Your footwork initially has to be different, and it has to change. Your instincts are still your instincts, and that's probably the hardest thing for Grant because he's such an instinctual human being. But how fast you act on those instincts actually have to dial back a little bit because if you are too aggressive, too fast, like you can be around the second level, it can hurt you. So just really proud of his development in terms of his footwork and how he's seeing things develop and then grow in his game. Because the truth is Grand delvit can play strong, free, corner, nickel dime, whatever you need it to be. It's about putting it on tape and showing the world how good of a player, not good, how great of a player he is?
00:23:45
Speaker 10: When he said not hard to temple Derrick Henry, what went through your mind at first?
00:23:51
Speaker 6: And then I saw you guys made him a game day captain.
00:23:53
Speaker 2: How did that.
00:23:54
Speaker 7: Sort of evolve?
00:23:55
Speaker 17: What went through my mind is just the competitive nature that the man plays the game with, Like that's.
00:24:01
Speaker 5: To be honest with you.
00:24:02
Speaker 17: When he said it, I just kept moving because that's how Grant thinks, Like it's not anything against the other person, it's just the competitive nature that he has. And it's not even the competitive nature. He's not here to compete, He's here to dominate, and that's how his brain is. So for him, for me, it's just like it's Grant, Like if you know him, that's how he is. And like the question earlier, he's gonna go up there and back it up like he did. So proud of the group for backing him up too, And I'm proud of him for being who he is the man he is.
00:24:36
Speaker 12: Wasn't on defense, but you know when Ronnie is in that protector role on the punt and it gets blocked, like, how do you see him kind of respond to that adversity.
00:24:46
Speaker 17: And in the day's sense, it's my job to get that man on on the bench, to let the play go and move on.
00:24:52
Speaker 18: And as soon as he sat down, a sad on his face.
00:24:55
Speaker 17: And you guys, you know, you don't get to see that human's face when he sits on the bench and he looks the way he looks, and he feels the way he feels.
00:25:01
Speaker 18: He's still human. He's killed him and hurt him.
00:25:04
Speaker 17: But it was such a lot left to do, and I and we talked about. I said, look, let it go, move on, let your feelings go. Your feelings are okay, well, we all have feelings. I don't care who you are, you me, we all have feelings emotional sways. The hardest thing is letting him go and continuing to move on with your life or in this situation that game. And he did a great job of just letting it go and continuing to stay locked in, and he played well on defense the rest of the day. So proud of the resiliency that Kevin talks about showing up in a player in a really tough moment.
00:25:36
Speaker 4: No he had any issue yesterday that you know, maybe puts a little bit of a question mark on him, but Tucker craft the tight end for for Green Bay just.
00:25:50
Speaker 2: The way they use him.
00:25:51
Speaker 4: What he can do, the matchup create he creates specifically for your position group and for the defense as a whole. If he's able to go what I mean.
00:26:00
Speaker 17: What yeah, you know again, I said this about Jacobs a couple of minutes ago.
00:26:05
Speaker 7: I think this.
00:26:05
Speaker 17: I think number eighty five is one of the best young tight ends in the NFL. Like, this guy is physical, he can run routes, his yards after Catcher, top of the league.
00:26:14
Speaker 18: I mean, he does everything.
00:26:15
Speaker 17: He can do, everything a tight end can do and some and he plays with just this edge and toughness.
00:26:21
Speaker 18: Obviously he's not there.
00:26:22
Speaker 17: It's a tough, tough deal for them because he's such a good player. I think the personnel department of Green Bay has done a great job. You look at him, Musgrave, the back, I mean, the receivers obviously, Jordan Love shout out Utah State. You know I was there. But you know he's a great player too. So biggest thing is just his ability to do so much. You know, some Titans in the league are just like f receivers and some are just in line tight ends, not this player. This player can do at all and he and he plays really hard, so you know, God willing hopefully he's okay, but he's a he's a tough match and I think he's gonna grow into one of the best tight ends in the NFL when it's all said and done.
00:27:00
Speaker 2: For that take away, right, and you talk about it all the time, So it's how big of an emphasis do you guys place on that and how tough is it when you know, like luck's part of it, right, you know, we can't punch it out the futball and you guys can't.
00:27:14
Speaker 7: Jump on it.
00:27:15
Speaker 18: Look, at the end of the day, the emphasis is there.
00:27:17
Speaker 17: I mean, we don't go one to two practices without Kevin designating a takeaway period with the first thing we do like coming out of stretch.
00:27:27
Speaker 18: It happens.
00:27:29
Speaker 17: But at the same time, there is some component to I don't want to say luck, but being in the right place at the right time, and that is really what we're stressing.
00:27:37
Speaker 18: Run to the ball, get on the ground, and when you do have.
00:27:41
Speaker 17: The opportunity to punch, punch, now you can't stress, you can't overstress, and then guys start guys will start to do their own thing, and that's the key and always the tough part in defense, like just doing a good job of one or the other.
00:27:54
Speaker 18: Right, So I do believe that they're.
00:27:56
Speaker 17: Gonna come, and I do believe they're gonna come in bunches, but we got to be ready to capitalize when they do, and we got to do our job before it happens.
00:28:06
Speaker 8: Can you kind of go on a little more depth about that and.
00:28:08
Speaker 7: What that looks like?
00:28:08
Speaker 17: Yeah, No, I mean Kevin's done this all the way from Motias to you know everything.
00:28:15
Speaker 18: It's crazy, like it's always there. I know I expected.
00:28:19
Speaker 17: I I think like when I'm at night, when I'm sitting in my bed or you know, getting ready for practice, I know that Kevin's going to have a three minute takeaway period where he's going to just stress the you know, we got to it is completely emphasized on that, and it changes for everyone. So whatever it is, whatever, and what I try to do is I try to make it something that the grant play, something that will happen for that human in that situation or a similar situation, and everyone kind of changes.
00:28:44
Speaker 18: It and tweaks it.
00:28:45
Speaker 17: Maybe it's a linebacker blitzing off the edge or d lineman stripping on a quarterback, or it's offensive side protecting the ball, whatever it is.
00:28:52
Speaker 18: So we you know, he stresses it.
00:28:54
Speaker 17: He shows it in his meeting rooms, like he does a great job of really presenting those things when we do it right and practice and a drilled and showing up in the game.
00:29:02
Speaker 18: And I truly believe it's gonna show up soon. It's going to show up in a positive way.
00:29:08
Speaker 4: Brought brought to the position group.
00:29:11
Speaker 17: Just a vet presence, super calm, chill and just a guy who has a lot of knowledge of the game. But he's also brought a physical nature to it, you know, a part that he's always been part of his game. Like I coach Ray Shawn in college. Uh, he was always an intelligent, tough player. To see him nine ten years down the road now, it's been fun, uh to see the growth in his game. He's seen a lot of football, been in this league a lot. I'm just really proud of the role he's embraced too. You know, he's been a really good player in Sleep for a long time and now his role is a little different and he's bought into that and that's why I wanted him here, so proud of him. And he's always ready. I mean, dude smashes his nose and won't come out the game, you know, And that's just the type of.
00:29:51
Speaker 7: Player he is.
00:29:52
Speaker 17: He's tough, he's physical, he's dependable, and we're glad he's here.
00:29:56
Speaker 18: Tackle I think, yeah, he's been, but he's had that.
00:29:58
Speaker 17: His whole career, Like even in college. I remember him because he's tough. He's gonna stick his nose in the freaking fan and that's just part of a player like that. So it's like a boxer, you know, it's just gonna happen here.
00:30:09
Speaker 2: How quickly I get.
00:30:10
Speaker 8: I think he was released at first, but how quickly, Like when you saw that maybe transaction where you like we were calling Kevin or ab to say we got.
00:30:16
Speaker 18: To bring this guy in.
00:30:17
Speaker 17: You know, when you slip slipped the love note to your wife, you know, I kind of was like, hey be you know, kind of slid that over there. Uh And but he was already obviously on the list and stuff, so uh but pretty quickly, you.
00:30:29
Speaker 18: Know, so I'm glad he's here.
00:30:32
Speaker 17: Glad Casey series done a great job to talk about a vet presence with a great attitude, great mentality. First guy on the grass maybe you know, just whatever he can do, he can do. I mean, scout team, This dude's flying around the field. Just really glad those two vets are here.
00:30:46
Speaker 1: Rookie defensive tackle Mason Graham discussed his growth as a pass rusher.
00:30:51
Speaker 10: Story would be to a certain social and so just one night.
00:31:04
Speaker 11: Yeah, that's a big thing I've been reflecting on too. Just uh, you know, just get into my rushes and kind of working that stuff. I know, you even came over there the other day and lasting me a question. I I need to work on my pass rush. So it's definitely something I need to focus on and keep developing going forward.
00:31:18
Speaker 19: Do you think things are like a inser place like quick that though it is your pet, more game episodes.
00:31:23
Speaker 3: Seeing some profits.
00:31:25
Speaker 11: Yeah, it's everything's coming into place, you know. I feel like it's just week by week and you know, just starting to do what I do, you know, and feel what I like and just keep progressing.
00:31:34
Speaker 2: Do you think you guys did so well against derre Kenry last week? Did the same things applying this we against.
00:31:41
Speaker 11: I mean, yeah, I mean the main goal is to keep them to least amount of yard as possible, and especially in the run because you know that's especially what we do upfront. So uh, just taking on blockers, knocking it back, and you know, just making plays.
00:31:55
Speaker 5: Being able to get off blocks. Mentions really how he played defense.
00:31:58
Speaker 11: We just want to limit them to whatever watcher. Uh, just Malik, I'll be watching the leak a lot. We go through a lot of the same process. So just like earlier in the week, we'll watch some film together. We'll get together and watch some stuff. But I feel like I just need to get into my rush and you know, do my thing.
00:32:27
Speaker 2: When you talk.
00:32:28
Speaker 9: I mean you talked about your relationship with a lot.
00:32:32
Speaker 2: What are the similarities between you and.
00:32:35
Speaker 11: I feel like suddenness. You know, we both have twitch. He's done it for a long time, so I'm still kind of learning. But just a little stuff that he does. I mean, he's winning a lot of his rushes, but he might not good stats for it, but he's winning if you really watch the tape.
00:32:49
Speaker 5: So that's just a guy a lean on.
00:32:51
Speaker 7: There is a vet.
00:32:53
Speaker 2: Train together.
00:32:54
Speaker 5: We do everything together.
00:32:54
Speaker 2: So enough take a week.
00:32:58
Speaker 19: Discussion kinds like I know you last year obviously it's the same thing last year, Like, how much do you feel that intensity, sense of emergency where you guys.
00:33:08
Speaker 11: That think you guys take the Yeah, I feel like, you know, as the defense right now, we're playing good. You know, we're we're making stops or limiting to points. But the next step is, yeah, taking the ball away and giving back to offense, you know, just putting them in a good position to score and playing complimentary football practice.
00:33:26
Speaker 6: How do you see in the team increase the.
00:33:28
Speaker 2: Mentality around.
00:33:31
Speaker 10: Uh?
00:33:31
Speaker 11: I mean those guys you know, going into a bunch of different roles, you know, whether it's a situation we're in. I feel like, you know, everyone kind of knows what it is here and we know we need guys to you know, step up every week and you know, make some play.
00:33:44
Speaker 5: So everyone's kind of ready for that.
00:33:48
Speaker 6: We know that we call.
00:33:52
Speaker 10: How much are you getting forward to getting.
00:33:54
Speaker 20: The game getting as well?
00:33:58
Speaker 6: Like in need?
00:34:00
Speaker 11: Yeah, me and Mike have you know, started to talk to each other even more. You know, he's been out there on the field with us, so that's you know, starting to get better and just building that chemistry for when that time comes for you know, when he's ready to come back and ball with us.
00:34:12
Speaker 13: We see so many little things in the play that we kind of take the ram and day like the US to teach with detail. How much more MAGNI I know it's really of the career, but how much more magnified is that the pro game?
00:34:23
Speaker 5: Even on your couch.
00:34:24
Speaker 11: I mean everyone's you know here for a reason, you know, the top athletes in the world, So everything's taken up another notch. You know, there's no you slappies anymore. But yeah, I feel like just everything is more amplified if you're.
00:34:38
Speaker 13: Want to appreciate that, the reading your short time, and like you know, coaches talking about us.
00:34:43
Speaker 4: Things just getting stack.
00:34:45
Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean just like the angles to the ball.
00:34:47
Speaker 15: You know, how you even place your.
00:34:48
Speaker 11: Hands on the blocker could change the whole play a lot. So, uh, just finding what you do and uh, you know, even like punching the ball out, you know the way you punch like punch down. Just little things like that.
00:35:01
Speaker 19: How much persons?
00:35:04
Speaker 10: And I haven't watched him a lot over the years, and are you.
00:35:09
Speaker 6: Looking forward just to see him?
00:35:12
Speaker 11: I mean, yeah, great player, a new team, new opportunity, but you know he's always gonna do his thing, So it's gonna be cool.
00:35:19
Speaker 1: Finally, All Pro defensive end Miles Garrett discussed Micah Parsons come into town.
00:35:24
Speaker 4: This is about Micaus. I know it's not you versus him in this game necessarily, but what is it about his game that you appreciate the most? What is it that he that really kind of separates.
00:35:38
Speaker 7: Everything? And the kid's special man. Uh, I mean got to see it in person this offseason, but I mean watch film really since he got in the league. You know, it's changed the direction as the exposure of the balls get off. Uh, his suddenness and he can. I mean, he's a little bit shorter as a rusher and that gives him no leverage angles that some guys just don't have naturally, and he's able to use that to his advantage. And he's just, you know, frocious and relentless when he's out there. You know, he's a he's a fun rusher to watch and you know, if you're your up and coming, you know you want to know learn how to rush. And as a high schooler college player, you know, he's one of the guys you have to watch the off season.
00:36:24
Speaker 2: You guys working out in the off season.
00:36:26
Speaker 7: Uh, it's something that we had been talking about doing, you know, I think the year before, and you know it didn't happen for whatever reason. And uh that's I'm from, you know, around that area, and obviously he was there at the time, so you know it's just natural that you know, we get in the gym together, us.
00:36:44
Speaker 10: Really kind of started connecting and get to know each other. And what do you like about him so much as a person?
00:36:49
Speaker 7: Seems like you guess, I mean we see each other around a different events or uh Pro Bowl, and you know there was a coming no respect and appreciate for one another's game, and you know, just you know, grew into what it is now the better player. Who's a better player? I guess we rather to see better than the season.
00:37:14
Speaker 2: You think you guys are the two best pass rushers nor.
00:37:18
Speaker 7: I think we're two of the very best. I think we're two of the very best of this uh this generation. So you just gotta continue to uh lead the way. And you know, there are definitely some other names in that in that conversation, but I think you know, saying that he's in it and that I I'm in it, It's it's not no out of the Norman to do some.
00:37:39
Speaker 10: For advice when he's going through this situation with the Roma way is just in terms of maybe lendl or for a bunch of say or.
00:37:46
Speaker 7: Anything like that.
00:37:47
Speaker 11: Uh.
00:37:48
Speaker 7: I mean we talked about it some, you know, we'd had conversations, and you know, I wouldn't say he was, uh, you know, constantly asking for advice. You know, he's a uh you know, wise enough at his young age, and he's got all kinds of uh you know people around him to help, you know, guide him through this decision making. And he knows the business pretty well, I know, by himself. But you know, whenever he wanted uh my ear or know some some words advice and I had no problem lending him no either, you know about.
00:38:19
Speaker 12: The trade and stuff before. But what went for your mind when that news broke with him?
00:38:29
Speaker 7: Holy, he did it. I think that was the same thing that went through most people's minds and and the the forty seven and I remember him talking about you know, we were sitting in the sauna during the off season. He was like, you know, if I get a deal, I'm gonna beat this out of your deal. And and he went out there and got it. So that was part of the the I guess the humorous part of the the the deal. And then then him texted me, you know, talking about you know, did I do right? I was like, nah, you did perfect. So I'm just glad to see him. Uh no, get what he's earned and and uh, he's he's worth every dollar he's he's shown that and him and him and that that defense have been auditariy.
00:39:15
Speaker 6: Uh did you learn.
00:39:17
Speaker 10: Him a little bit after he got the forty seven or did you guys have some funny exchange about the about you know, do you I guess did you say something to.
00:39:28
Speaker 6: Him about eight getting seven and Narnion dollars more than a year?
00:39:32
Speaker 7: Oh? I mean I really you know, he he had already you know, told me he was gonna do it, and you know he's he's a lot younger than me, So I guess that has something to do with the But no, I'm I'm I'm proud, and I'm I'm glad he went out there and and got the deal. Then you know he went out there and earned it.
00:39:53
Speaker 2: You guys as.
00:39:53
Speaker 12: A defense number one ring to overall defense, right now you have the three and a half sacks, but obviously no wins to s for it. Yet I guess, like what needs to change? What more do you feel like you guys on the defense can do where you yourself can do.
00:40:07
Speaker 7: Got to get the ball up, you know, making plays and on the quarterback making these TFLs. We got to get the ball out with it. And I think that's been the big difference where I think we're minus three in the turnover margin and you know that's not winning football. And we know that's the difference and we just have to make the point of emphasis and take that to the game field.
00:40:29
Speaker 2: You're out there, do you feel that pressure mouths to either you know, get a strip sack rather than just a sack or bat up a ball to force one of those interceptions takeaway as you guys are looking for.
00:40:41
Speaker 7: I don't feel any pressure when I'm out there. It's just a matter of, you know, in that moment, having that thought run through my head and you know, trying to find a way to do it. I mean, these guys are very talented and you know, securing the ball and keeping it away from us, you know, just having you know, picking those spots, picking your moments and and allowing it to always be on my mind to make sure we make those plays and you know, keeping it on everyone's mind so you know, when we get those opportunities, we make the most out of them. Right, I'm.
00:41:16
Speaker 2: Here, I can't go every every week.
00:41:19
Speaker 6: Every team in the league faces injuries.
00:41:22
Speaker 20: This week no different for you guys, with the questionable Joel Platonio Andre Schmidt now popping up on that list. As a team, how in the meeting rooms and practice, do you guys feel like you've emphasized the importance of that next amount of mentality We hear all the time, but like, what's that look like.
00:41:37
Speaker 7: For this team? I'm challenging the you know, the the man in the the next position, or know, the the younger guy in the position, if he's the one sitting sitting behind the starter, to making sure that he knows exactly what he's doing, you know, challenging his his knowledge and his his effort, his execution, and uh, making sure that you know he's he's getting the very best of us, you know, whether whether it's looks so or our advice, our guidance are and uh, you know when we're we're talking and communicating, you know, it's I it's the same way as if you know here, the who there, who's starting from from game one, so you know, making making sure that it's it's seamless by by allowing him to to feel the intensity that you know he would if he were you know, picked this the the first guy originally, and you know that that's sometimes how it goes.
00:42:28
Speaker 5: Oh do it for years.
00:42:30
Speaker 13: And it's a small sample size, one of a couple of games, but it seems like you're kind of going to another level.
00:42:36
Speaker 5: Is this as well as you've ever played?
00:42:39
Speaker 7: It's uh sample size too small? Uh, but I will say probably about any of the season, I will say that. But right now there there's a couple of sketches I can remember that we were better than this.
00:42:54
Speaker 6: This is what were This is one of those weeks where.
00:42:58
Speaker 10: You know, if you'll have a nice chair, I want to come out as the best player on the field. Is that one of your goals this weekend is to come out of here as the best player.
00:43:10
Speaker 7: I mean, that's why my brother on the other side of the the field. But it doesn't matter know who it is or uh what the relationship is. Uh, that's where I wanna be. That's what I want to be anytime I step on the field, regardless of the team or the person on the other side. And I know that's his host person as well. Wo is he?
00:43:28
Speaker 2: I'm sorry?
00:43:29
Speaker 6: D Can I just as a quick follow on it. Any of you guys you know, no.
00:43:33
Speaker 10: You staying away from each other this week, or have you texted each other at all and said it.
00:43:37
Speaker 6: I'm gonna be the best guy?
00:43:39
Speaker 7: Or have you had any kind of next day I he texted me, he said, uh, can you get two tickets from my family? I said, I got you?
00:43:47
Speaker 2: Well, you s the word.
00:43:48
Speaker 9: Embarrassing last week, Jim Schwartz said the second half was embarrassing for the defense.
00:43:51
Speaker 2: Do you felt do you feel like the last few days you've seen the necessary word to to get ready for sent it?
00:43:58
Speaker 7: I did. Now I've seen I've seen a lot of intensity on getting getting it right, and you know, whether it's be doing it, you know, communicating over communicating. I've liked the amount of emphasis that's being placed on getting it right right now, and I think it's what we neat. You know, there's oning too, but there's there's plenty of games, plenty of season left. There's no reason to hit the panic button at this moment. I continue to state their course, but you know, realize what you have to adjust looking in the mirror, and then you know, we take we take on this team and do we know we can.
00:44:33
Speaker 2: Do We love a lot looking to drove deep a lot like he does. Or even the injuries they've had on the offensive line, do you feel like there's opportunities there for you and the rest of the d line to go get the quarterback.
00:44:46
Speaker 7: I mean, there are always opportunities to get the quarterback regardless of you know, whatever team we face. This is a matter of you know, putting him in a situations which they have to hold the ball. You know, he wants to throw the ball deep, but you know they do certain protections to to allow for that, chipping the edges in a variety of ways, and you know, trying to you know, kind of put the ball up instead of you know, they'll let him get down Phil and they'll let him run underneath it. No helps you get him out a little bit quicker, so you know, making it where he has to the ball feel like he has to make a play and you know, taking the running game out of it, and that'll be difficult enough with Jacobs back there.
00:45:26
