We're going to talk again about the 2024 San Diego Padres season, do a quick recap on that and then we're going to look ahead to what could possibly be up in San Diego during this offseason. So as the sun set on the 2024 Major League Baseball season, the Padres found themselves reflecting on a remarkable journey that saw them return to postseason glory and come so close to a World Series berth. The Padres' record in 2024 was 93-69. It marked their best regular season performance since 2010, a testament to the shrewd moves made by the front office and the exceptional play on the field.

The foundation for San Diego's success was laid during the 2023 and 2024 offseason. Gm AJ Preller, known for his aggressive approach, made several key acquisitions that would prove pivotal. The most significant move was the trade for right-handed pitcher Dylan Cease from the Chicago White Sox Boy. Just about every team wanted to get Cease away from the White Sox and the Sox were looking for the right deal, and the Padres swept in and claimed cease with their trade. So he was coming off a Cy Young caliber season, and that immediately bolstered the Padres' rotation.

The Padres made a significant addition to their bullpen by signing Japanese reliever Yuki Matsui to a five-year contract. Matsui, a left-hander, had an impressive career in the Nippon Professional Baseball League with the Golden Eagles, recording a 2.40 ERA for them, and had 236 saves over 10 seasons. So this move aimed to strengthen the Padres' bullpen, especially with the departure of closer Josh Hader. Matsui's track record as a reliable closer in Japan positioned him as a key asset for San Diego's late-inning relief. The contract, valued at $28 million, and includes opt-out clauses after the third and fourth seasons. It was a five-year deal and it provided both flexibility for the player and team.

So the Padres 2024 campaign it began with a unique twist, as they opened the season with a two-game series against the Dodgers in Seoul Korea Seoul, south Korea, that is, as part of Major League Baseball's world tour. After splitting those games, the team found its footing and never looked back. They had some great individual achievements Fernando Tatis Jr returned to form, earning an all-star honor and finishing in the top five of NL MVP voting. Dylan Cease he lived up to his expectations, posting a 14-11 record with a 3.47 ERA and striking out an impressive 224 batters in only 189 1⁄3 innings. And closer, robert Suarez he was the rock at the back of the bullpen, notching 27 saves which earned him his first All-Star selection. Now the team milestones for the Padres. They had some significant ones. On September 13th, they secured their 83rd win, surpassing their 2023 season total. On September 22nd, as the teams achieved their first 91 season since 2010,. And in dramatic fashion, the Padres clinched a wildcard spot on September 24th with a 4-2 victory over of all teams, the Dodgers sealing it with a historic game-ending triple play.

As the trade deadline approached, the Padres found themselves in a strong position, but still looking to improve. Preller, again, their GM worked his magic and he acquired veteran starter Michael King from the New York Yankees. And King proved to be a crucial addition, going 13-9 with a 2.95 ERA, providing stability to the rotation alongside Dylan Cease. And one of the boldest moves, though, of the 2024 season by any team the Padres acquired reigning batting champion Luis Arias, and he bolstered their already potent lineup. Immediately Known for his exceptional contact hitting and disciplined approach at the plate, rice brings a unique skill set to the Padres' offense. Traditionally, it was driven by power, but with his knack for getting on base and putting the ball in play, he filled a crucial role at the top of the lineup, providing consistent opportunities for the Padres' big bats to drive in runs. His acquisition demonstrated San Diego's commitment to assembling a balanced team capable of competing at the highest level. Adding a player of his caliber complemented the strengths of their established stars. Arias was an immediate impact again to the team. He clinched the National League batting title with a .343 batting average, underscoring his standing as one of the most reliable hitters in baseball. His ability to handle high pressure at bats and contribute consistently throughout the season made him invaluable. Especially as the Padres embarked on their postseason journey, adding a player of his caliber signifies the Padres' determination to construct a lineup that can succeed in any environment, setting them up as a formidable opponent with eyes on a deeper playoff run in 2025. Now, despite a valiant effort from Hugh Darvish, who allowed just two runs over six and two-thirds innings, the Padres' offense could not solve the Dodgers' bullpen in the playoffs and the season ended with heartbreaking losses of 8-0 and 2-0, but the team had proven they could compete with the

best. Now let's look ahead to 2025. They look to address several areas. Starting pitching With Dylan Cease and King. They form a formidable top of the rotation staff. Adding another frontline starter could put San Diego over the top. Keep an eye on potential free agents like Corbin Burns. Now, meanwhile, the Dodgers, as we know of course, already signed Blake Snell, so really it forces the hand of the Padres. They're going to have to go out and get a frontline pitcher to have an opportunity to stay in the same realm as the

Dodgers. Now the bullpen reinforcements despite Suarez's strong season, the Padres still could benefit from adding another late inning arm. A reunion with Padre Kirby Yates might make sense. An offensive firepower of the lineup perform well in 24. But adding a left-handed power bat could provide balance. A pursuit of Matt Olsen via a trade or Cody Bellinger, who the Cubs are listening to offers for, could be in the cards
Speaker 2:
8:45
Now. What about shortstop? With Ha-Song Kim hitting free agency? The Padres need to secure their long-term solution at shortstop. How about picking up Willie Adamas, formerly of the Brewers? That could really solidify the shortstop position. For years to

come. The impact of these potential moves could be really significant. Another top-tier starter would give San Diego one of the best rotations in baseball, while offensive additions could help prevent the scoring droughts that plague the team in the National League Division Series. Shoring up the bullpen would provide manager Mike Schilt with more late-game options, potentially turning close losses into wins. So as we look back on the Padres' 2024 season, it's clear that this team has the foundation to be a perennial contender. With a few strategic additions and continued development from their young core, san Diego fans have every reason to believe that 2025 could be the year they bring a World Series title to Petco

unfulfilled. But as the offseason begins and the hot stove starts to heat up, the Friar, faithful can take solace in knowing that their team is knocking on the door of

greatness. The question now is not if the Padres will break through, but when. All right, padres, it's all on you. You need to have another big offseason here and pick up another Dylan Cease caliber type pitcher to add to your starting rotation and make some moves on the offensive side as well to avoid these shutouts that happen to you in the postseason. And the Padres, again with their sharp GM, they can do it. They can make these moves to be once again another team that's going to threaten to not only get in the World Series but win the World Series. So with that, it's a wrap for this Baseball Classics Diamondcast. Tomorrow we'll be back and we'll take a look at what happened to the baltimore orioles in 2024 and all their great promise, and, of course, we'll look ahead to the moves that they could be making in 2025 to finally get over the hump. So until then, hope you have a terrific day. Thanks again for tuning in so long, everybody.
