Episode 4233 │ September 24, 2026
The dollar still runs the world. No country stopped using it this year. What failed is the thing that was supposed to enforce it.
WHAT THIS EPISODE COVERS
Scott Kesterson opens by separating two things usually treated as one: hegemony, meaning the dollar's continued dominance in global trade and reserves, and enforcement, the military backstop that once made challenging that arrangement expensive — arguing the first is fully intact while the second has stopped producing results after seven months of bombing that hasn't reopened a strait or protected an ally. He then dismantles a widely circulated claim that a fifty-year petrodollar treaty expired in 2024, tracing it through the Government Accountability Office, the American Institute for Economic Research, and PolitiFact's own fact-check, showing the real story is narrower but still significant: a 1,300-vessel shadow fleet, nearly 20 percent of global tanker capacity, now moves oil outside Western insurance and dollar clearing, with Iran alone collecting roughly $3 billion since February trading entirely outside the system. Layering that finding against five fronts that opened across the Red Sea corridor in a single month, the episode closes on the actual shift underway — power converting from military enforcement to economic routing control, tariffs and sanctions replacing strikes because the first instrument no longer works — and the finding underneath it all: the power is still there, the obedience is gone.
KEY QUESTIONS ADDRESSED
- What is the actual difference between the dollar's hegemony and the military enforcement that used to back it — and why does Scott argue the first is fully intact while the second has stopped producing results, even after seven months of the heaviest air campaign in the region since 2003?
- Did a fifty-year petrodollar treaty really expire in 2024 — and what does the Government Accountability Office, the American Institute for Economic Research, and PolitiFact's own fact-check actually say happened on June 9, 2024?
- What does a 1,300-vessel shadow fleet moving nearly 20 percent of global tanker capacity outside dollar clearing reveal about the real shift underway — and why does Scott read the Graham bill's specific naming of that shadow fleet as the detail that separates ordinary wartime sanctions from something else entirely?
