WEBVTT
00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:00.959
Hello, everybody.
00:00:01.040 --> 00:00:02.080
I am David.
00:00:02.240 --> 00:00:05.280
I am the personal trainer here with Balance and Birch.
00:00:05.360 --> 00:00:07.919
And this is JD Tremblay.
00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:09.759
Uh, did you want to take a second to introduce yourself?
00:00:10.000 --> 00:00:21.359
I'm David Camble, and um I am uh the director of high performance at Hungry Warrior Academy, where we help men build uh physically, mentally, and also spiritually uh throughout deck assistants.
00:00:21.600 --> 00:00:22.480
And he's he's being humble.
00:00:22.559 --> 00:00:27.920
He's leaving out the fact he's a phenomenal athlete, has done many athletic feats and crushed all of them.
00:00:28.160 --> 00:00:41.840
Um, but uh the biggest reason why we're having a conversation today is because a lot of people have different methodologies and different philosophies when it comes to optimizing, when it comes to building structure outside.
00:00:41.920 --> 00:00:50.960
Uh like I know me and JD had military service, so we had X exterior structure in our lives, or some people had school and college, and how to get structure in your life after that.
00:00:51.039 --> 00:00:56.399
Um, so ultimately what we're gonna talk about is the ways that we found best uh navigating that.
00:00:56.640 --> 00:01:03.200
And yeah, we might disagree, we might agree, but the the fun part is gonna be having the conversation and figuring out how you all feel.
00:01:03.439 --> 00:01:04.719
All right, well, thanks for having me, David.
00:01:04.879 --> 00:01:05.760
Yeah, of course.
00:01:05.920 --> 00:01:15.120
So the first question that I have for you is how do you navigate your hunger for more with your aspirations to be content?
00:01:15.200 --> 00:01:21.280
And I know we talked a little bit about this before, but I'm gonna grill you a little bit deeper on it this time now that we're recording.
00:01:23.680 --> 00:01:24.239
All right.
00:01:24.719 --> 00:01:33.359
Uh the idea of being content is that you're in you're able to enjoy the moment, but you're never satisfied.
00:01:33.519 --> 00:01:38.560
And so there's a difference between the two where um for me, right?
00:01:38.719 --> 00:01:46.879
Um, I was at uh the Trail Half Marathon World Championship a few weeks ago, and I finished fifth.
00:01:47.840 --> 00:01:58.640
And fifth is not a podium, fifth does not get recognition, fifth does not amount to how much I trained, and so I finished fifth.
00:01:59.359 --> 00:02:23.840
And I was content, content to be at the at the world championship, content that I was not injured, content that uh I participated, but then people put too much emphasis on the part where you are comfortable, which is very comfortable to someone it caters to your emotion, to your feelings, right?
00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:31.680
And so uh the satisfaction part is that I am not satisfied about my performance.
00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:40.319
I uh put too much emphasis on work versus uh the intensity of my my workouts.
00:02:40.719 --> 00:02:49.599
Um my my nutrition played a lot uh into my training, and so I neglected that.
00:02:49.840 --> 00:02:56.159
So there's that deep sense of hunger to develop to achieve that next level.
00:02:56.319 --> 00:03:04.319
So it's not satisfied by well, I finish first or I finish second, or you're always constantly trying to improve.
00:03:05.039 --> 00:03:14.639
And so the one of the ways that I can explain it is the idea and uh the of between feelings and emotions.
00:03:14.800 --> 00:03:17.520
So feelings are an experience of life.
00:03:17.759 --> 00:03:26.719
I'm content with uh happiness today, but uh it might be a sad situation, but but I'm happy so it's just an experience of life.
00:03:26.800 --> 00:03:43.919
Like I'm experiencing life, but I'm not basing my whole decision and my entire day based on my feelings versus emotion, and emotion is completely different, where now you are able to gear your life towards it because emotions you can calculate it.
00:03:44.080 --> 00:03:49.360
If I surprise you, then heart rate goes higher, uh pupils are dilated.
00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:53.280
I can calculate all of those, and then now I can make better decisions.
00:03:53.360 --> 00:04:11.680
And so if you're basing your decisions based on your um emotional state, because you're able to calculate it and you're able to regulate these factors and not your your your feelings, then that would be one example that I could provide uh on how to cultivate that hunger.
00:04:11.919 --> 00:04:18.000
Yeah, and using those things that kind of will be more so attributed as weaknesses and expecting them.
00:04:18.240 --> 00:04:19.199
This is going to come.
00:04:19.360 --> 00:04:21.360
How do I best prepare myself for them?
00:04:21.600 --> 00:04:35.600
I think I think that's a really good outlook on things, especially um because I find myself, and now I put myself in a different category, and that I think many roads lead to Rome, where I find myself in life comes in phases.
00:04:35.759 --> 00:04:40.959
And so I find myself like I'll have content phases and I'll have phases where I'm super driven.
00:04:41.120 --> 00:04:53.600
Would you say it's when you're describing it, it's more so like I'm coming in into a phase, or where you're saying like it's like this is a constant, like I am in a constant hunger and I'm content because you're not married to these things, right?
00:04:53.680 --> 00:04:56.000
Like you have multiple eggs and multiple baskets.
00:04:56.160 --> 00:05:02.720
Uh, would you say it's more of a perpetual thing for you, striving and and uh pushing for these things?
00:05:03.040 --> 00:05:09.600
Or does contentness kind of come in a phase where you're like, let's really focus being content for a month and a half, two months?
00:05:09.839 --> 00:05:16.240
Because I know that for me uh really helps me wind down uh when I go through a period of striving.
00:05:16.319 --> 00:05:17.360
That's almost what I call it.
00:05:17.439 --> 00:05:20.959
Is it's it's a necessary recharge period for now.
00:05:21.040 --> 00:05:22.639
I'm now I know I'm on the go.
00:05:22.720 --> 00:05:28.240
I'm feeling my motivation, I'm feeling driven, I'm feeling disciplined, and I've already rested, so I'm good to go.
00:05:28.399 --> 00:05:29.680
Um, does that make sense?
00:05:29.920 --> 00:05:38.160
Yeah, um, I would see it as more of a perpetual so the ladder, and that's uh because again, it's it you're constantly improving.
00:05:38.399 --> 00:05:43.759
So um the way of content being content is all the time.
00:05:43.839 --> 00:05:45.360
Like I am all the time content.
00:05:45.439 --> 00:05:47.920
I'm in that period of life, I am content.
00:05:48.160 --> 00:05:50.560
So um, yes, it's fifth.
00:05:50.720 --> 00:05:55.439
I'm I'm still content, and I could have not even finished it.
00:05:55.600 --> 00:05:59.279
I'm gonna be content because that's that's what I was given.
00:05:59.360 --> 00:06:01.600
That's the output that I delivered.
00:06:01.680 --> 00:06:03.759
So I'll be content no matter what.
00:06:03.920 --> 00:06:21.680
But the problem that I have is when people are either comparing it to others and saying, Well, I'm not content because of um that person finishing first, or uh, I could have been so there's that difference, and that's why I said, Well, content versus satisfaction.
00:06:21.759 --> 00:06:22.959
So I'm never satisfied.
00:06:23.120 --> 00:06:25.040
No, I will never be satisfied.
00:06:25.199 --> 00:06:28.000
And that's like food, essentially, right?
00:06:28.079 --> 00:06:30.319
When you're looking at food, you're hungry.
00:06:30.480 --> 00:06:33.439
Well, you're never completely satisfied.
00:06:33.600 --> 00:06:56.240
Yes, in that particular meal, you're going to be satisfied because you over ate or overindulged, but even then you're going to learn something in that process because, well, you overate, and so maybe you're going to be sick as a result, or maybe you understand that eating certain type of food creates certain types of inflammation.
00:06:56.399 --> 00:06:58.959
And so, again, that is the learning process.
00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:02.720
That satisfaction, that hunger is always there.
00:07:02.879 --> 00:07:17.279
And you wake up in the morning, you will be hungry, you will be hungry for some type of food, but it's understanding what type of food you should be eating that create that level of inflammation, so you can always improve on that sense.
00:07:17.439 --> 00:07:22.319
And the only level to be able to improve is the emotional state, right?
00:07:22.480 --> 00:07:38.639
Which I explain, or being able to look at these facts versus and and logic and science versus just looking at your uh your your your feelings, like now you're not just eating a dessert because well, but you feel like it.
00:07:38.800 --> 00:07:43.040
Now you're eating a dessert because there is a process to it, right?
00:07:43.279 --> 00:07:58.399
If you are designed to go and you're an athlete, and right, if you're not an athlete and you just want to and you are somewhat healthy, eating that dessert is based on your feelings, and then there are these times where I just yeah, I indulge in it, but that's an experience of life.
00:07:58.560 --> 00:08:00.399
I'm experiencing food, right?
00:08:00.480 --> 00:08:02.000
I'm experiencing that hunger.
00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:03.360
Now that's being content.
00:08:03.519 --> 00:08:24.560
So whether I eat the cake because I feel like it, or whether I eat the cake because uh I am going to use it to increase my carbs intake and use it to go to the gym right after and then burn it off because it's it's quick fuel, then I'm still going to be content.
00:08:24.720 --> 00:08:26.720
So it's still an ongoing process.
00:08:26.879 --> 00:08:31.519
And that's one thing that I really like about how you phrase it because you don't marry the two ideas.
00:08:31.680 --> 00:09:00.080
My hunger is not isn't in uh correlation to my contentness, and I think that's super important because especially when I start off with people, one of the first things I tell them is identify exactly where you are, be so not uh critical, but critique yourself, be honest with yourself, give yourself an honest review because until you know actually where you are and why these patterns are happening the way they are, you can't make a plan and then build to where you want to go.
00:09:00.240 --> 00:09:02.320
And I've always found you have to become content with it.
00:09:02.480 --> 00:09:03.840
Otherwise, you're gonna be fighting yourself.
00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:05.440
Like, I am this way a little bit.
00:09:05.600 --> 00:09:09.679
How do I make a plan to not be that way or to not have that show off in every way?
00:09:09.840 --> 00:09:15.200
Like I know for me, I love sweets more than anything in the world, especially fresh baked goods.
00:09:15.440 --> 00:09:19.360
Um, and I I would eat, eat, eat, eat, eat compulsively.
00:09:19.440 --> 00:09:23.919
And I've suffered all the health effects that came with that, especially uh in high school.
00:09:24.080 --> 00:09:32.000
I would always feel bad and groggy, and I I never I worked out extensively and I was always a little overweight, which I always made me in my head.
00:09:32.080 --> 00:09:36.960
Um, and it was because I couldn't actually come to terms with the fact that I had a problem with sweets.
00:09:37.039 --> 00:09:37.840
I would lie to myself.
00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:40.960
I'd be like, oh, well, I had four cookies and I work out.
00:09:41.120 --> 00:09:51.200
And I think where you're getting at is I have an honesty with where I am, and that gives you the contentness to say, I that is why I'm striving, and I'm gonna keep trying to get better.
00:09:51.440 --> 00:09:53.840
So I I really like the way you phrase that.
00:09:54.080 --> 00:10:03.440
Um, another thing that I have that I wanted to ask you is is contentness the number one thing that's driving your optimization?
00:10:03.600 --> 00:10:11.600
When I say that, is it your desire to be content or your desire to do great things that makes you make yourself the best version of yourself?
00:10:11.840 --> 00:10:15.120
Well, they they both have their their own path.
00:10:15.279 --> 00:10:20.720
It would be like asking the question, um, what's more important, discipline or motivation?
00:10:20.879 --> 00:10:24.480
And then many people will say, Well, it's about discipline, much better.
00:10:24.960 --> 00:10:28.240
Well, then again, I would say which one is better for you?
00:10:28.399 --> 00:10:31.360
Is it your endocrine system or is it your nervous system?
00:10:31.519 --> 00:10:35.120
They're both regulated to operate at different intensities.
00:10:35.279 --> 00:10:40.720
So now you have your nervous system, which is quick, and your endocrine system, which takes much longer.
00:10:40.960 --> 00:10:45.360
The motivation is quick, and then the discipline takes much longer.
00:10:45.519 --> 00:10:47.279
So is it content?
00:10:48.240 --> 00:10:54.799
So the question is is posed in a way where both would be equally important.
00:10:55.120 --> 00:11:04.799
I and that I think that's really important too, because I think it really uh sets in stone the idea that these are two separate concepts, that you're growing these separately.
00:11:05.039 --> 00:11:13.200
So, how do you because I I personally am not default content, I don't wake up in the morning and be super content.
00:11:13.519 --> 00:11:16.960
Um, I find myself journaling, I find myself reading quotes.
00:11:17.039 --> 00:11:22.080
Um, so what are the ways that you and yourself throughout your day, or maybe it comes naturally to you?
00:11:22.159 --> 00:11:23.120
Tell us more about that.
00:11:23.279 --> 00:11:24.799
How are you feeling content?
00:11:24.960 --> 00:11:25.759
Do you do anything?
00:11:25.840 --> 00:11:28.799
Is there anything in your routine that you have to do, or does it come naturally?
00:11:28.960 --> 00:11:33.759
No, no, it doesn't come naturally because the human body is not designed for thriving.
00:11:33.840 --> 00:11:39.440
The human body is designed for survival, and so we have to learn these patterns.
00:11:39.759 --> 00:12:06.799
Um now, now, now I'll speak about it from a Christian point of view because I am Christian and uh our company is has uh Christian principles, but uh the this is applicable for any faith, any religion, or anyone listening, whether you're a man or women, so uh meditation, meditation is a huge part of my day, and so I start my day with uh well I trust best, right?
00:12:06.879 --> 00:12:12.720
Like when I say I start my day, this is not a every single day it will happen.
00:12:12.879 --> 00:12:17.679
Uh, we had an event this weekend, so we had to wake up at four o'clock in the morning.
00:12:17.759 --> 00:12:23.759
I did not wake up in the morning and read my Bible and then spent 12 minutes just meditating.
00:12:23.840 --> 00:12:28.559
I I did okay, so this is not something that did happen.
00:12:28.639 --> 00:12:32.320
Okay, there are other parts of my life that will happen for sure.
00:12:32.480 --> 00:12:34.399
Uh, but meditation is a huge part.
00:12:34.639 --> 00:12:52.399
There are several different ways of meditation, and uh the main part that people have to understand is that um when when the brain shift between brain waves, uh it's been studied with EEGs in the book How God Rewires Your Brain.
00:12:52.559 --> 00:13:00.639
And um scientists that again, when they say God, uh, those guys are not Christian, though the entire book is not based on Christianity.
00:13:00.720 --> 00:13:17.679
They pick different faith and then they analyze them through EEGs or electroence phylogram that calculates uh how brain waves operate, and they prove that it's a minimum of 12 minutes that you require two shifts from one to another.
00:13:17.840 --> 00:13:22.480
And so there are several ways that people can implement it in their life right now.
00:13:22.639 --> 00:13:38.799
One is the 12-minute minimum, uh, and then there is the passive and active, and so uh passive is you are going to break it down into two where you're either allowing your mind to just free flow, that's the one I prefer.
00:13:38.960 --> 00:13:44.960
Uh, and then there are other people that just focus on one aspect, so focus on their breathing or focus.
00:13:45.039 --> 00:13:46.320
I tend not to do that.
00:13:46.480 --> 00:13:53.279
Uh, that's because I try to focus on several uh things throughout the day, anyway.
00:13:53.360 --> 00:13:57.519
So might as well just allow my brain to just go free flowing for 12 minutes.
00:13:57.679 --> 00:13:59.120
And then there is the active side.
00:13:59.279 --> 00:14:06.399
The active side that many coaches out there are forgetting is um the aspect of that zone one, right?
00:14:06.639 --> 00:14:10.720
Which if you're not familiar with it, like I know you are definitely, right?
00:14:10.879 --> 00:14:30.080
But for those that don't know that are listening, zone one is you're able to uh perform the activity that has been given to you, and you're also able to have a coherent conversation with the other person, so you're not out of breath that you're able to say for for some people it's going for a hike, okay.
00:14:30.159 --> 00:14:41.919
That would be zone one for them, for them, but there are other people just going for a walk 10 minutes, and then after 10 minutes they're out of breath, so uh maybe five minutes or even just getting off the couch.
00:14:42.399 --> 00:14:50.639
It depends on your level of fitness and how your body is designed at that moment, and that's uh that that's a ballpark for zone one.
00:14:50.799 --> 00:14:53.679
Okay, so that would be the active uh component.
00:14:53.840 --> 00:14:56.320
I tend to do some rock climbing sometimes.
00:14:56.480 --> 00:15:06.320
I uh I like rock climbing, uh, so it plays on your spatial recognition where you don't you cannot look at your feed, but it has to be placed on a certain hold.
00:15:06.480 --> 00:15:07.919
So I I like that.
00:15:08.080 --> 00:15:13.919
So those are some types of uh ways that I I used in my daily life, uh even today.
00:15:14.159 --> 00:15:14.720
Yeah, yeah.
00:15:14.799 --> 00:15:21.919
And I I really like that you have the inactive and the active, because I'm a big proponent of we have to use our bodies, we have to push our bodies.
00:15:22.000 --> 00:15:23.440
If you don't use it, you lose it.
00:15:23.600 --> 00:15:29.519
Um, but I find so many people kind of neglect the importance of the mental growth as well.
00:15:29.679 --> 00:15:35.200
Uh, and that's why I really love your approach that you said that you do with meditation, which is like, I'm gonna let my brain run with this.
00:15:35.440 --> 00:15:40.879
Because I know for me, I I will do like Wim Hof breathing and stuff like that, and it'll be great for math.
00:15:41.120 --> 00:15:43.200
You know, I'll never track Wim Hof breathing at all.
00:15:43.279 --> 00:15:44.240
It's wonderful.
00:15:44.480 --> 00:15:53.360
Um, but my best moments in myself where it's I bring myself to say, this is why this really matters in my life.
00:15:53.519 --> 00:16:02.879
Uh, you know, uh, I guess practicing the mindfulness in my meditation is is is my favorite thing because I always ask myself, instead of limiting thoughts, I'm gonna invite them.
00:16:03.039 --> 00:16:08.639
Why of all things in the world, while I'm sitting down here and thinking, did I think of being a son?
00:16:08.799 --> 00:16:12.000
Did I think of uh a friendship that I have?
00:16:12.159 --> 00:16:17.519
And oftentimes it's because you actually need to think about that and put some excess thought to it.
00:16:17.679 --> 00:16:27.840
So that's what I use meditation a lot for is to grow and and uh I guess refine my own philosophical beliefs to identify and address relationships that need work.
00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:39.679
Because again, I think that helps with the contentness, because if I have my life in order, then I can get to the gym, and the gym isn't this this daunting thing that's weighing on me because the rest of my life is stressful.
00:16:39.840 --> 00:16:43.440
Um, so I I really like that approach where it's inactive and active.
00:16:43.519 --> 00:16:46.480
I've I've I've personally never heard it put that way, but I really like that.
00:16:46.639 --> 00:16:48.080
Yeah, it's one way to do it.
00:16:48.159 --> 00:16:51.279
To me, I give it all to God, right?
00:16:51.440 --> 00:16:55.200
To me, I understand that there are variables that I can control.
00:16:55.679 --> 00:17:01.039
Uh, there, for example, like my my physical state, I can improve it.
00:17:01.200 --> 00:17:10.319
For my mental state, I can improve it, certain types of supplements or the mindfulness, but there are other variables that I will not be able to control.
00:17:10.720 --> 00:17:18.799
Uh, even in the epic decay, I say that physically there's a lot of people that would be able to do all of the races that I've done.
00:17:18.960 --> 00:17:31.759
If you're adding to the pool of individuals that would be competing, the mantle side, I would say, yes, there are some people, I would say at least more than three that would complete more than the epic decade.
00:17:31.839 --> 00:17:55.519
But because it's the variables that you can't control that made me one of three people to finish the epic decor, or uh some of these races that I've done around the world that or or even all the things that I've accomplished, it's because there are variables I can't control, and I have to be content and understand at that specific moment, this is where God wants me to be.
00:17:55.680 --> 00:18:00.480
Like I went through this difficult time of my life for a certain reason.
00:18:00.640 --> 00:18:07.359
I have to understand sometimes where I need to be, and I don't need to understand why I am in this position.
00:18:07.519 --> 00:18:14.799
For example, I to go do the epic deca, I didn't have the money, and um, I sold my house.
00:18:15.039 --> 00:18:18.640
So I was homeless when I came back from the epic deca.
00:18:18.880 --> 00:18:37.680
And now I was thinking, oh, I'm gonna get fame, uh, I'm gonna be uh known around the world, and I'm gonna get money and sponsorship, and um and none of this happened, none of it happened, and even then I got more negative than positive.
00:18:37.839 --> 00:18:44.480
People were telling me you need to be in a mental institute for what you've done, uh, people were rejecting me.
00:18:44.640 --> 00:18:48.480
Uh, and and there was a lot of pride that came with it.
00:18:48.720 --> 00:18:58.160
And so what I learned after was that the pride had to decrease so that I could be more even prepared to help other people.
00:18:58.400 --> 00:19:28.319
Because if my pride was up, then my guard would be much higher, and I would not be able to help other people, or I would help people in terms of pride, which would just fuel their own pride, and then we would have a well pride square or a pride exactly, and and I think that's I one thing that I I I really like about that is you have to surrender to something that's bigger than yourself.
00:19:28.480 --> 00:19:32.079
And so for me and you, that's easy because you know we're Christians, we believe in God.
00:19:32.160 --> 00:19:42.400
But if even if you're secular, even if you don't believe in God, surrendering to a purpose, if you don't because what I always try to tell people is life incurs challenges, we are guaranteed the challenges.
00:19:42.480 --> 00:19:44.559
It was gonna be hard, it wasn't easy.
00:19:44.799 --> 00:19:51.599
And if you aren't pursuing or striving or building towards something, this is gonna be a miserable drive.
00:19:51.680 --> 00:19:53.839
It's gonna it's gonna be a pretty hard life.
00:19:54.240 --> 00:20:01.039
And you know, so that that's uh, you know, especially where you're saying, like, I don't know why I'm doing this, people are calling me crazy.
00:20:01.200 --> 00:20:03.359
I sold my house and took a bet on myself.
00:20:03.519 --> 00:20:03.839
Why?
00:20:04.000 --> 00:20:07.279
Because God told you to, you know, why because your purpose told you to.
00:20:07.359 --> 00:20:12.079
And so, you know, where I I definitely uh am akin to that with where my contentness comes from.
00:20:12.160 --> 00:20:17.279
It's like, you know, uh, I don't know a lot of the reasons why I do some of the things I do, but I just feel God tells me to.
00:20:17.680 --> 00:20:30.480
If it's a purpose in your life, whether it's a political purpose or it's uh uh uh an outreach purpose or whatever it is, if you don't have that purpose, I find you're not going to incur the suffering necessary to actually become a good person.
00:20:30.640 --> 00:20:31.680
Because why are you doing it?
00:20:32.000 --> 00:20:37.200
You know, like life is already hard, you're gonna suffer more uh without a cause.
00:20:37.599 --> 00:20:38.960
That doesn't make any sense.
00:20:39.119 --> 00:21:04.160
Uh so I I I'm happy you did it because you know, again, that's why we have you and and and the fact that you do, and sometimes your your heart leads you to crazy places, and when you listen to it, you can actually be content in yourself because you, you know, I think about what uh Franklin Roosevelt, I think it was Franklin Roosevelt, what he says uh uh in the man in the arena speech, which is like credit is to the man in the arena because he is separating himself from the people who never tried.
00:21:04.319 --> 00:21:09.440
They will live for the rest of their lives not knowing, could I have done it, could I not have done it?
00:21:09.599 --> 00:21:14.160
The person who actually tries, he says, I could do it, I could not do it, and you and now you know.
00:21:14.319 --> 00:21:22.480
There's a and so I think there's a piece to actually attempting and doing the crazy thing because again, JD, you could, you did, you know, and I think that's a beautiful thing.
00:21:22.960 --> 00:21:25.119
Yeah, exactly.
00:21:25.279 --> 00:21:47.279
Yeah, and what so now I get contentment through doing meditation, prayer, and uh you also get contentment by for me, it's reading the Bible because uh and for for people that uh don't follow Jesus, uh, it would be about following a certain set of values.
00:21:47.519 --> 00:21:53.200
So understanding your values, which just structure would create a certain form of discipline.
00:21:53.440 --> 00:21:59.519
The way I can frame it is um, and maybe you can tell me more about your point of view on that.
00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:14.160
You were in the military, is that to me when I joined, I was 17 years old, so just a chop, couldn't even buy a pack of cigarettes or drink my own beer without getting it from somebody else, and then I was given a gun, right?
00:22:14.319 --> 00:22:16.559
So uh here's the military for you.
00:22:16.720 --> 00:22:22.960
So I thought as a civilian, even as a kid, that as soon as I would join, I would get discipline immediately.
00:22:23.039 --> 00:22:28.799
You're getting discipline, you're getting resilience, and you're gonna be working out, you're gonna be in shape.
00:22:28.880 --> 00:22:30.079
Like, this is the military.
00:22:30.880 --> 00:22:39.599
And so I joined, and little did I know, I looked around, I said, there there's there's a lot of people that are disciplined, and there's a lot of people that are not disciplined.
00:22:39.839 --> 00:22:42.720
And I try to figure out okay, well, what's the problem?
00:22:43.039 --> 00:22:47.200
Like, there are people that are disciplined, not disciplined, like what is the cause?
00:22:47.359 --> 00:22:53.200
So, what I discovered is that the military gives you a structure, it gives you that system.
00:22:53.599 --> 00:23:01.920
If you follow the structure, if you follow the system or those standards, if you follow the standards, then you acquire discipline.
00:23:02.079 --> 00:23:05.759
It's the same, except that the civilian is way more difficult.
00:23:05.920 --> 00:23:16.559
Oh, switching from the military to the civilian, it's it's one of the most difficult parts because they're telling you, oh, you need to separate military from civilian life.
00:23:16.720 --> 00:23:18.880
No, I I it took me years.
00:23:19.119 --> 00:23:28.319
Now you have to merge the two together and understand, okay, I I was a soldier and I will always be a soldier, but I am also a civilian.
00:23:28.400 --> 00:23:30.319
So now you're merging the two together.
00:23:30.480 --> 00:23:34.160
And so now you're creating that structure, you're creating that system.
00:23:34.240 --> 00:23:36.640
But now you're in a civilian, you can do whatever you want.
00:23:36.880 --> 00:23:39.599
If I want to walk a certain way, I'm walking a certain way.
00:23:39.759 --> 00:23:42.559
I don't have someone telling me this is the way to walk.
00:23:42.720 --> 00:23:54.640
I I don't tell, hey, if I want to wear a dress shirt, that's that's what I want to wear, but no one's telling me, oh, your dress shirt is crooked over here, or no one's gonna inspect my bed.
00:23:54.799 --> 00:24:06.400
Or so now what God gives you, or or having this framework where you have values, you're able to be content because you understand that these are your values.
00:24:06.559 --> 00:24:10.240
You're going on a date, the girl doesn't fit the values.
00:24:10.400 --> 00:24:11.039
That's fine.
00:24:11.200 --> 00:24:12.640
I'm content with it.
00:24:12.799 --> 00:24:14.319
I had a fun time.
00:24:14.799 --> 00:24:15.680
It's okay.
00:24:15.839 --> 00:24:17.759
We're just parting ways, and that's it.
00:24:17.920 --> 00:24:19.839
You're on your journey, I'm on my journey.
00:24:20.000 --> 00:24:21.440
You're not a Christian, I'm a Christian.
00:24:21.519 --> 00:24:22.079
There you go.
00:24:22.160 --> 00:24:27.519
You can go on your own, but I will respect my boundaries based on my system of value.
00:24:27.680 --> 00:24:32.559
I will do my best and I will be content when I please my God.
00:24:32.799 --> 00:24:40.720
My God is in the Bible, He gave me that set of rules, He gave me that, so I can gain discipline, so I can gain resilience.
00:24:40.880 --> 00:24:50.880
And then when you look at it from a non-secular perspective or like a person that is not a Christian, then at least if you haven't written down all your values, okay.
00:24:50.960 --> 00:24:55.519
For for me, it's easy because boy, I I I have it written down already.
00:24:58.000 --> 00:25:01.119
Like, well, people died to give me that book.
00:25:02.880 --> 00:25:06.079
It's already written down, like it's like the cheat code of all.
00:25:06.640 --> 00:25:08.079
It's so painful.
00:25:08.319 --> 00:25:27.279
But for yeah, but for people that don't believe in Jesus, well, he he here are all these stories or here are all these stories, or here are the stories that you can make up, or like the value system that you can make up, and then create it based on your stories and your values, enumerate it, look at it, and say, Well, this is what I want you.
00:25:27.680 --> 00:25:32.720
So now you're able to be content because you're living according to your values.
00:25:32.960 --> 00:25:45.279
So I would say pick your values before your goals, which, if you pick your values before your goals, then you can pick any goal that you want, because any goal can become a, in my view, a sin.
00:25:45.519 --> 00:25:51.119
Any goal can become a sin, even as righteous as it may seem to everybody else.
00:25:51.200 --> 00:25:58.400
There's nothing inherently wrong in becoming a doctor, but it's how you get to becoming a doctor, and it's all the things that you're gonna be doing.
00:25:58.480 --> 00:26:04.319
So there's nothing wrong with it, but it's the values before the goal, and that will lead you to be content.
00:26:04.559 --> 00:26:10.559
I I think that's really well put because especially what I what I think you're you're really drawing to is an authority structure.
00:26:10.720 --> 00:26:19.839
I report to an authority structure, and in the army it's easy because if you don't make your bed, that guy's gonna come and put you in the front leaning rest, and you're not gonna be able to move until you learn your lesson.
00:26:20.079 --> 00:26:28.799
Um, and so the discipline is is it's right in front of your face, you know, it and it's applied from somebody else, that authority structure.
00:26:28.960 --> 00:26:32.000
When you get out of the military, there is no authority structure.
00:26:32.160 --> 00:26:38.400
You know, most you're not likely living with mom and dad, or even if you are, mom and dad probably aren't going in your room and telling you what to do.
00:26:38.640 --> 00:26:45.599
And so I think that's something to where the ability to for us to say that authority structure is God.
00:26:45.680 --> 00:26:55.920
So this is what's going to drive me and what's going to fulfill me, you know, surrendering to that for us, and you know, anybody who abides by that, the more you surrender to that, I promise you, the more contentment you'll feel.
00:26:56.079 --> 00:27:00.160
But if you're not a Christian, one thing that I really love, it's a quote from uh Eric Thomas.
00:27:00.240 --> 00:27:02.480
And it's always just rang in the back of my head.
00:27:02.559 --> 00:27:05.279
It's he says, at the end of every principle is a promise.
00:27:05.519 --> 00:27:13.599
And so if you don't have principles in your life that you're adhering to, you're not guaranteed any fruit at the end of this.
00:27:13.680 --> 00:27:16.480
You're not guaranteed yields for all of your hard effort.
00:27:16.640 --> 00:27:31.359
But if I know I'm gonna make my bed every single day and I know I'm gonna be on time to every single thing I do, and I know I'm gonna have a good attitude, and you have these principles in your life that drive you, even if they're not religious, um, those will guarantee you things in your life.
00:27:31.519 --> 00:27:34.720
If you have just those four things we listed, well, you're pretty employable.
00:27:34.799 --> 00:27:39.359
You're probably going to be able to get a job, and that's a thing that lots of people struggle with these days.
00:27:39.519 --> 00:27:45.200
And so I think if, like you said, you need to pick your values before you pick your goals.
00:27:45.359 --> 00:27:51.839
If I don't know my principles and what drives me, then I'm kind of just a bull in a china shop knocking stuff over.
00:27:51.920 --> 00:28:00.799
And I might get something done that I wanted to accomplish, but it's more, it's more often than not going to cause chaos in my life than I am gonna uh make it better.
00:28:02.640 --> 00:28:03.440
Yeah, yeah, you're heard.
00:28:03.920 --> 00:28:04.400
Awesome.
00:28:04.640 --> 00:28:08.559
So what was the what was the uh the hardest part for you?
00:28:08.799 --> 00:28:29.519
Because was well, let me let me rephrase this question because I had a distinct transition period where I went from the discipline and structure of the army, and then I went and just sat on my butt and ate as much fast food as I could because I was like, I'm I'm free, I did my work, I did what I was supposed to do, and I quickly was met with the uh realization that you can't do that forever.
00:28:30.079 --> 00:28:34.640
Uh and so I changed course back uh back into a life of fitness, thankfully.
00:28:34.799 --> 00:28:37.599
Um, but that was a distinct period of my life.
00:28:37.759 --> 00:28:45.440
Did you have a distinct transition where you had to kind of set a fire under your own butt to get back into structure, or was it seamless for you?
00:28:45.680 --> 00:28:52.720
Seamless in the sense of moving from one transition to the next, but having different learning curves.
00:28:53.440 --> 00:29:02.799
So going from military structure where you're um or going from yeah, the military structure to the civilian.
00:29:02.960 --> 00:29:07.200
I understood, well, I I want that this is where God wants me to be.
00:29:07.440 --> 00:29:10.720
Um, so I had to pray about it.
00:29:10.880 --> 00:29:15.039
And so the the seamless transition was more through faith.
00:29:15.200 --> 00:29:31.519
So at first it was about uh going from the military to the civilian and not really understanding what I would have to do, or it was more uh I said, Oh god, uh, I need ten thousand dollars just to go to college.
00:29:31.680 --> 00:29:33.519
Like I just need that money.
00:29:33.599 --> 00:29:53.119
Here's on a piece of paper, and I was praying, and then when I stood up, phone rang, and it was this lady, and she said, We we did this claim in the military, and uh we said no, we're so sorry, we made a mistake, you'll have the money in the next couple of days.
00:29:53.359 --> 00:29:55.359
Um we approved it.
00:29:55.440 --> 00:29:59.279
I don't know what happened, and then all of a sudden it was 10,100.
00:29:59.759 --> 00:30:01.759
Like it was just wow, okay.
00:30:02.000 --> 00:30:05.519
So I had to renew my mind daily.
00:30:05.680 --> 00:30:18.720
That's what was happening, is that every every so often I would get these form of ways that God would show, okay, I I still got you, but you still have to do the work that I called you to do.
00:30:18.960 --> 00:30:22.640
So um, again, my pride was was huge.
00:30:22.799 --> 00:30:44.559
Uh I I wanted to again, you you want to leave the military, but you want to be highly successful financially, and you want everybody to love you, and you want everybody, and then you realize okay, God is placing me at that specific moment, that specific state of mind, and I have to perform certain actions based on that.
00:30:44.960 --> 00:31:00.240
And um, that's when I got to the Epic Decca, and it would it was still difficult, I still, but it was at another level to sell your house so that you can go do a race for two weeks to go to Hawaii, and then two weeks later you come back.
00:31:00.319 --> 00:31:22.000
And I was in a in a storage unit, and I remember being on a on an air mattress, using my jacket as a pillow with all my boxes around, sleeping in a in a place that is smaller than under a uh a desk, and thinking, I'm the epic deck of guy, like I finished this.
00:31:22.160 --> 00:31:24.240
Like, do you know who I am?
00:31:24.400 --> 00:31:34.400
And and it was just and I was thinking, uh, this is how I'm going to inspire others, and um that might be the platform for certain individuals.
00:31:34.640 --> 00:31:44.079
It just wasn't the platform that God could use because it is prideful, and so my pride had to break down, my pride had to go out the window.
00:31:44.319 --> 00:31:46.559
Uh, and so it took me a while.
00:31:46.720 --> 00:31:56.000
It took me a while to really just let go and say, okay, this is and even after I let go, it took some time to really build back up to really like now.
00:31:56.079 --> 00:31:59.519
We're I'm doing fine, I have a house, like I'm doing very fine, right?
00:31:59.680 --> 00:32:04.079
But but it took a while for for your mind to be renewed.
00:32:04.240 --> 00:32:14.960
And so when the Bible in uh Romans 12, 2, it says to renew your mind daily, uh it is a daily task that people have to go through.
00:32:15.119 --> 00:32:18.640
Your situation might shift in some instance.
00:32:18.799 --> 00:32:31.920
For me, it did when I reached college, then all of a sudden I had that 10,100 boom, but I still had to walk through my own desert, so to speak, to use the analogy of the Israelites in the desert.
00:32:32.319 --> 00:32:45.119
I still had to perform certain actions that would yield a certain result, and uh, people want the magic pill that will get them to the other side immediately.
00:32:45.279 --> 00:33:03.119
Uh, because well, Neil had the choice between two pills and he picked one, and because he picked that one, now he has an unlimited amount of knowledge because you can just have a chip in your brain and do whatever you want, and your entire life has changed like this.
00:33:03.279 --> 00:33:12.160
That does not happen, and there's not a story in the like anywhere that's that everything just changes from one day to another.
00:33:12.319 --> 00:33:19.119
All of these movies are showing, and there's a word for it, it's called a montage, right?
00:33:19.200 --> 00:33:25.119
Which is a French word to say your take or in English, uh, the English word would be montage, right?
00:33:25.200 --> 00:33:31.839
Like when you take that in your face, I was thinking, well, he probably didn't get the yeah.
00:33:35.519 --> 00:33:36.640
That's funny, yeah.
00:33:36.880 --> 00:33:56.160
So a montage, right, or in the French way is uh is when you take a bunch of clips and then you're you're just uh putting the workouts of Rocky and not showing that he trained for an entire winter or he trained for an entire year to beat that guy on the ring.
00:33:56.319 --> 00:34:00.160
That would be montage that a lot of people would know.
00:34:00.640 --> 00:34:14.800
And so when you're starting to look at the life, and and you can even look at the Bible that way, you're you're flipping one page and you're going, Yeah, the Israelites were struggling for 400 years, and then you flip the next page, and you're like, Oh wow, there's deliverance right there.
00:34:15.039 --> 00:34:17.920
You're thinking, well, okay, that's that's the very next page.
00:34:18.000 --> 00:34:26.480
So within, so for you within the span of time, you just read 400 years of stories of the Israelites.
00:34:26.639 --> 00:34:28.559
You read the beginning and then you read the end.
00:34:28.719 --> 00:34:33.679
Congratulations! But in your life, it will last every single day.
00:34:33.840 --> 00:34:43.440
And so when I say renew your mind, is uh the Bible, Bible acclaim it, but I I'm saying it right now, is that you have to do it daily.
00:34:43.760 --> 00:34:59.920
Daily, you are to renew your mind on what are your values, so it's not just about being um in a gratitude state, it's contentment is understanding that there are some difficult situations.
00:35:00.079 --> 00:35:06.960
See, I was in a storage unit on an air mattress that I had to fold because otherwise I would not even have a place to write my book.
00:35:07.039 --> 00:35:08.639
That's what I was doing.
00:35:09.519 --> 00:35:18.480
And and and putting my jacket back on so I could go outside because it's cold in Canada, and so uh was I content?
00:35:18.639 --> 00:35:21.679
Well, it was a difficult moment, but I was content, right?
00:35:21.840 --> 00:35:24.880
My pride was saying, no, you're you shouldn't be content.
00:35:25.039 --> 00:35:32.239
But I said, you know what, I am in the position that I am right now, and I will get to that next level when the time comes.
00:35:32.400 --> 00:35:42.800
I will work for that next level, and right now I am working on that next level because we are doing very well as a as a company, we're growing, we're we're expanding.
00:35:43.280 --> 00:35:50.960
I'm I'm enjoying it, but I'm understanding that I have this past, I have understanding that well, right now I'm at that stage.
00:35:51.119 --> 00:35:53.039
I can go lower, I can go higher.
00:35:53.199 --> 00:35:56.320
It's about am I in the right spot at the right?
00:35:56.719 --> 00:36:19.199
Yeah, and I think that's so important where you say renew your mind daily, because you know, especially when you're renewing or uh, you know, reset, like reset the board is almost what I like to say, where you remind yourself that life is not gum drops and rainbows and lollipops, and that it's actually pretty challenging and there's a good deal of suffering that you're gonna have to begin to become content with.
00:36:19.360 --> 00:36:34.960
And if you know, when you when you can reset your eyes on the fact that, oh, the suffering was embedded in, I was going to suffer as part of this, you can begin to take it on lack of a better word, take it on the chin or rationalize it better.
00:36:35.199 --> 00:36:45.920
Because when you tell a story, you know, as incredible as yours, where it's like, you know, I'm having these personal battles in my head all the while, you just did one of the most incredible things and you're living in a storage unit.
00:36:46.079 --> 00:36:54.000
And if you can't come to terms with the fact that this was going to be hard, this is going to be a decision you have to make daily.
00:36:54.239 --> 00:37:02.559
Um, and even in the midst of making that decision, your life probably isn't going to get immediately better, but you need to make the decision anyways, daily.
00:37:02.800 --> 00:37:15.840
And I think that's something that gets so lost on people because they think, like you said, it's like something's gonna come from on high, where as soon as I have this one thought or I do this one thing, all of my stresses will just go as far as the east is from the west.
00:37:15.920 --> 00:37:16.960
And that's never happened.
00:37:17.440 --> 00:37:30.480
I I have to renew my I have to I have to dedicate myself to whatever principle, my faith, whatever it is, every single day, or I'm gonna start buying my own lies unless I reset myself on what is actually true.
00:37:30.639 --> 00:37:41.039
Um, and I just to touch on what you said, you know, because I think it's it's it's really interesting that you brought up uh the Exodus where where uh the it where the Israelites were were fleeing Egypt.
00:37:41.360 --> 00:37:44.559
Um, and there was a lot of despair.
00:37:44.800 --> 00:37:55.679
And in the midst of them having freedom, they were starving and hungry and and like this is hard to talk about, but a lot of them wanted to go back to Egypt because that's how much suffering there was.
00:37:55.760 --> 00:38:05.599
That's how hard it is to wake up, bear your cross daily, and do the right thing, to fight for your own freedom, to f to purchase like your ability to do things in this life.
00:38:05.840 --> 00:38:11.840
Um, and I I just think about that often where it's like, imagine they turned around, imagine they turned around.
00:38:12.000 --> 00:38:16.960
You have to you have to stay driven, you have to stay faithful, you have to understand that the suffering is yours.
00:38:17.119 --> 00:38:30.320
There, that there was always going to be a degree of suffering, and I have to make a decision every single day, whether it's within myself or in my meditation or whatever it is, I have to rededicate myself to what matters, or I'm gonna turn back to Egypt.
00:38:31.599 --> 00:38:32.800
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
00:38:32.960 --> 00:38:45.280
So it's about putting a clear path as to where you want to go, where are you right now, understanding the facts by lying to yourself, you are not helping yourself.
00:38:45.440 --> 00:38:58.159
If you are overweight and you want to lose weight, then you have to be understanding this is where I'm at, this is where I want to be, and I'm honest with myself, this is what I want.
00:38:58.400 --> 00:39:03.760
If you are uh to me, I left the military, I had no education.
00:39:04.079 --> 00:39:09.679
The the the okay, yes, saving people's lives is fine.
00:39:09.840 --> 00:39:16.880
Like you're a diver, there's no transferable skills, like skills like from a military okay.
00:39:16.960 --> 00:39:17.440
Yeah, there you go.
00:39:17.519 --> 00:39:19.679
You're right, you're doing basic training, okay?
00:39:19.840 --> 00:39:24.960
And then uh they hand you a gun and then they say, Well, here you can take it apart and then go shoot down the range.
00:39:25.039 --> 00:39:26.079
Okay, is that transferable?
00:39:26.239 --> 00:39:26.960
None in Canada.
00:39:27.039 --> 00:39:27.840
They remove our guns.
00:39:27.920 --> 00:39:28.400
There you go.
00:39:28.559 --> 00:39:30.159
So, what about what's next?
00:39:30.320 --> 00:39:30.880
Well, there you go.
00:39:30.960 --> 00:39:36.719
Uh, here's a gas mask, and uh go into this room and you have to put it under nine seconds.
00:39:36.800 --> 00:39:37.360
Like, what?
00:39:37.599 --> 00:39:38.880
What even a subway?
00:39:39.199 --> 00:40:19.440
You really think that I'm gonna go and put this on my resume and say, No, maybe I'm gonna have some weird twisted LinkedIn way of twisting it and say, uh, I am able to go under pressure into rooms that are like okay, thank you, but they're not hard transferable skills where I was an electrician and now I am an electrician in the civilian, and and very often, even in the military, they um very often they they train you in the military and then they forget the civilian part, so that you when you transfer to the civilian, you have to go through courses and training anyway.
00:40:19.599 --> 00:40:23.599
So uh you're transferring from one to to to the next.
00:40:23.760 --> 00:40:30.559
There will be challenges, and um, to me, I I went through every single one of them, right?
00:40:30.719 --> 00:40:36.480
Going from the military to the civilian and not even having any transferable skills.
00:40:36.639 --> 00:40:41.119
So I wanted to go back, and God had no had cut that that barrier.
00:40:41.280 --> 00:40:45.119
I would say that's why God, you know, it's not written in the Bible.
00:40:45.199 --> 00:40:55.519
That's my assumption, is that that's why God made them cross the Red Sea, is because again, uh they can't go back, they understand there there's no going back.
00:40:55.840 --> 00:40:56.559
What are you gonna do?
00:40:56.719 --> 00:40:57.760
Start swimming.
00:40:58.239 --> 00:41:06.639
Oh, there might have been that one guy, that one epic decade guy that's like, Oh yeah, I'm going back to Egypt and maybe sweat that, right?
00:41:07.119 --> 00:41:20.960
But like you, but most people are again not putting it in uh a clear paper and saying, Look, this is where I want to go.
00:41:21.119 --> 00:41:24.960
I have faith that I can achieve that, it's realistic.
00:41:25.119 --> 00:41:27.360
You have to make a goal that is realist.
00:41:27.519 --> 00:41:29.760
That's my goal realistically.
00:41:29.920 --> 00:41:30.800
What can I do?
00:41:30.880 --> 00:41:37.039
That's why people hire coaches, that's why people hire other individuals that have been in these shoes.
00:41:37.199 --> 00:41:42.320
Is that they you look at it and you say, Look, this is my um daily faith.
00:41:42.400 --> 00:41:44.000
I want to achieve this goal.
00:41:44.320 --> 00:41:45.760
Is this achievable?
00:41:45.920 --> 00:41:49.920
And you look at him and you say, No, no, it's not.
00:41:50.079 --> 00:41:57.039
So the worst coaches, the worst coaches out there will look at you and say yes, and then just take your money, and that's it.
00:41:57.199 --> 00:41:58.639
Those are the worst coaches.
00:41:58.800 --> 00:42:10.719
The so the worst thing, and I mean, to me, it was a blessing, a blessing that well, it was a bad family life, so I was rejected, and then I was rejected at school, so bullied.
00:42:10.880 --> 00:42:11.679
It was a blessing.
00:42:11.920 --> 00:42:12.320
Why?
00:42:12.559 --> 00:42:19.360
Well, because I did not attach myself to critic criticism, like that critical side that others have.
00:42:19.599 --> 00:42:22.239
I just understood this is for them.
00:42:22.400 --> 00:42:24.639
So I joined the military, that's it.
00:42:24.880 --> 00:42:25.679
Was it hard?
00:42:25.840 --> 00:42:28.159
Yes, because you're going into the military.
00:42:28.320 --> 00:42:30.639
I did not want to go in the military, like at all.
00:42:30.880 --> 00:42:31.360
At all.
00:42:31.440 --> 00:42:32.800
I was 17 years old.
00:42:32.960 --> 00:42:36.880
I I why why would I want to go in the military?
00:42:37.039 --> 00:42:39.119
But again, this was my my choice.
00:42:39.280 --> 00:42:43.519
I I preferred to go in the military than to go in the street, so that was pretty much it.
00:42:43.760 --> 00:42:50.639
Or get in debt into a degree that I did not even know what I really wanted to do, I did not have any backup plan.
00:42:50.880 --> 00:43:00.480
So I said, okay, military it is, but then moving from the military to the civilian is the same concept, it's constantly improving and improving and moving forward.
00:43:00.639 --> 00:43:08.320
So the advice I would give everyone is to have a clear step, okay, and make it definitive.
00:43:08.480 --> 00:43:19.920
So within the next one year or two years, I will achieve X goal, I will have faith that this is what I want to achieve, and then you read it daily.
00:43:20.159 --> 00:43:27.760
If you read that, we're not just talking about some weird affirmation of think positive, everything's gonna be positive in your life.
00:43:27.920 --> 00:43:30.559
I don't believe in this, I don't at all.
00:43:30.719 --> 00:43:31.039
Why?
00:43:31.199 --> 00:43:37.920
Because if I think I'm going to lose weight and I think I'm gonna lose weight, no, if I don't do any action, I'm not gonna lose weight.
00:43:38.079 --> 00:43:39.840
Like that's that's that's the end goal.
00:43:40.000 --> 00:43:42.559
You have to perform certain action in between.
00:43:42.800 --> 00:43:47.679
Understand there's the mindset between it, but you have to make it clear to your mind.
00:43:47.840 --> 00:43:48.880
You have to make it clear.
00:43:49.039 --> 00:43:50.000
So, how do you do that?
00:43:50.239 --> 00:43:58.480
Clear, definitive goal within a time frame so that your brain understands oh, oh, I don't have five years or 10 years to achieve that goal.
00:43:58.639 --> 00:43:59.519
I know that within that.
00:44:00.159 --> 00:44:01.679
Yeah, I have to achieve it.
00:44:01.760 --> 00:44:12.400
And because your brain is built, like your entire body, by the way, is designed for survival, then you are designed to get that hunger, which you mentioned, that purpose.
00:44:12.559 --> 00:44:13.920
That purpose comes.
00:44:14.079 --> 00:44:25.920
Uh purpose is the byproduct, essentially, because you're you're essentially using uh your you're you're picking your goal, which you already pick your value, by the way.
00:44:26.000 --> 00:44:31.599
You pick your goal, you enumerate it, you say, okay, I'm going to finish it within a set time frame.
00:44:31.840 --> 00:44:44.159
And then by trying to achieve it because of survival, then you end up finding that purpose that you were built for, because your brain is designed to achieve that.
00:44:44.559 --> 00:44:45.760
Like you have to survive.
00:44:45.840 --> 00:44:46.800
So you're going to achieve that.
00:44:47.679 --> 00:44:49.119
You're wired to survive.
00:44:49.280 --> 00:44:53.039
And the the other thing that I always try to remind people is you're wired to adapt.
00:44:53.119 --> 00:45:01.760
You're supposed to be able to take variables, you're supposed to be able to incur the circumstances that life is throwing at you and be like, maybe I can't do an hour and a half workout.
00:45:01.840 --> 00:45:03.599
Is 45 minutes actually okay?
00:45:03.760 --> 00:45:04.239
Yes.
00:45:04.480 --> 00:45:08.800
So many people end up throwing the baby out with the bathwater on so many things.
00:45:09.039 --> 00:45:18.800
Um, and you know, where you're where you're my one of my favorite things where you're saying is you know, the importance of of being real with yourself and setting that goal.
00:45:19.039 --> 00:45:28.400
Because if I set some kind of crazy goal that I can't hit and then I'm demoralized and quit because I'm not gonna hit my goal, um, I only have so much time on the turf.
00:45:28.800 --> 00:45:33.760
And and you know, you said you said think about uh these where I'm going, think about the goal.
00:45:33.920 --> 00:45:36.480
Another thing is too, if that's not working, think about the consequence.
00:45:37.039 --> 00:45:39.360
Everybody pays the piper eventually.
00:45:39.519 --> 00:45:46.480
And if I continue to furlough my payments, eventually the piper's gonna come and knock on my door and he's gonna say, Where's my money?
00:45:46.880 --> 00:46:07.440
And and if you again, if it throughout your life you've been making payments, you've been doing a little stretching, you've been doing a little meditating, you've been doing some working out, and you've been doing what you're supposed to do, then when whatever, whatever, whether it's old age and just aging, or maybe you have an injury that occurs, this isn't gonna be as drastic because you did what you were supposed to do already, and the payments not gonna be as bad.
00:46:07.599 --> 00:46:14.880
But if you did nothing and you continually put yourself in this cycle of 20 years of saying it's gonna be different, it's gonna be different, it's gonna be different.
00:46:15.039 --> 00:46:17.840
Well, the only thing that needs to be different is the decision making.
00:46:18.000 --> 00:46:23.679
Because if you don't change the decision making, start making payments to the piper, eventually it's you're gonna be in a position where you can't.
00:46:23.920 --> 00:46:40.400
And whether it's you're dealing with the issues of aging or you know, uh some people, you know, whether it's I'm 55 and I never cared, cared about my health, and now I'm overweight and I can't use half of my muscles, and now my organs are failing, and now I don't feel like I can actually do anything about it.
00:46:40.559 --> 00:46:42.320
That is my friends is the piper.
00:46:43.360 --> 00:46:50.559
And and you know, so if you're not positively motivated where it's like I want to do great things with my life, some of us just want to live.
00:46:50.719 --> 00:46:58.000
Some of us just ex and like you know, exactly what you're preaching, JD, which is like this contentness, like to be okay with just existing in my life.
00:46:58.159 --> 00:47:01.760
Well, if you're not doing the things you're supposed to do, that that will get taken.
00:47:01.840 --> 00:47:13.280
And I think that's an important thing for people to remember, especially as you know, I I'm sure there's I'm sure if you did the statistics, I can't imagine the health outcomes for for young men and ladies coming out of the military is great.
00:47:13.360 --> 00:47:21.119
I can't uh with all the nicotine that that gets pushed on them, with all the energy drinks that gets pushed on them, with all the bad dietary habits that gets pushed on them.
00:47:21.280 --> 00:47:34.320
I have so many friends who got out and I love them, and I and I but they have to be real with themselves and they have to put that fire under their own butts and say, Hey, I worked so hard for five years, but I've kind of stagnated for the last 20.
00:47:34.400 --> 00:47:38.239
And if I don't start doing something now, uh my I I can kiss the life goodbye.
00:47:38.320 --> 00:47:42.800
And I I think we should all be on board of convincing our friends and peers not to do that.
00:47:44.000 --> 00:47:46.159
Yeah, that's what love is, right?
00:47:46.480 --> 00:47:47.280
Yeah, yeah.
00:47:47.440 --> 00:47:56.559
So yeah, you should get your coach or someone uh in your circle that challenges you and loves you enough to tell you, yes, you're in the wrong direction here.
00:47:57.760 --> 00:48:04.719
Yeah, and I know I've lost a lot of friends as a result of telling them that what they were doing was wrong.
00:48:04.880 --> 00:48:12.719
I totally understand, but I prefer to live this life but not be responsible for being a part of their decay.
00:48:13.280 --> 00:48:20.880
And you don't have to be a you know, one one big thing that I think of too is you know, when you these people are in a decay, are you assuming that I've never been in a state of decay?
00:48:20.960 --> 00:48:25.840
Like that's what these people are acting like you're saying when you're trying to stuff like, hey, I I have decayed before.
00:48:26.320 --> 00:48:32.079
Like I'm trying to help you not do what I did, and and it just they never they never seem to see it.
00:48:32.159 --> 00:48:33.760
I think it comes from a place of shame.
00:48:33.840 --> 00:48:35.840
There is no reason to be ashamed, you know.
00:48:35.920 --> 00:48:38.800
We, you know, especially from our outlook, we're told to come as we are.
00:48:39.039 --> 00:48:40.639
We will be changed through the process.
00:48:40.800 --> 00:48:44.000
And if you continually come, you will be rewarded if you seek it out.
00:48:44.159 --> 00:48:52.320
And so, you know, if you whether you know your shame is coming from, oh, I'm overweight and I don't think I can do it, or I've never worked out, I don't think I could do the epic defka.
00:48:52.480 --> 00:48:53.760
Did I pronounce it right?
00:48:54.960 --> 00:48:55.599
Perfect.
00:48:55.760 --> 00:48:57.360
Uh, I don't think I could do that.
00:48:57.440 --> 00:49:00.800
And you know, honestly, honest to God, JD, you're incredible.
00:49:00.880 --> 00:49:04.880
A lot of people probably can't, because it takes a lifetime of work.
00:49:05.039 --> 00:49:17.519
And if you do not start where JD started, where this is where I'm saying these winds we have windows in our lives, and the window will eclipse, and you will wake up at 40, you'll wake up at 50, you'll wake up at 60.
00:49:17.679 --> 00:49:19.679
I'll say, Man, I wish I had some principles.
00:49:19.920 --> 00:49:26.800
Man, I wish I listened when they said you need to have your values first, because otherwise you're gonna wither away and and be just like everybody else.
00:49:26.960 --> 00:49:33.679
And I, you know, I don't think there's anything wrong with being everybody else, but I think most of those people are too ashamed to admit they need help.
00:49:33.840 --> 00:49:35.440
And and they could be great.
00:49:35.519 --> 00:49:40.639
And I and I think, yeah, that that's just one thing I wanted to mention because we because we mentioned a lot a lot of flaws today.
00:49:40.719 --> 00:49:42.239
And it's like you don't have to be ashamed of them.
00:49:42.320 --> 00:49:47.920
You know, we all have flaws, I have flaws, I have things that I struggled with that threw me off, especially getting out of the military.
00:49:48.000 --> 00:49:49.599
You know, we talked about overeating.
00:49:49.760 --> 00:49:58.159
Um, it's really easy to get swallowed up by these things, but if you're not honest and real about addressing them, then then uh you're gonna have a hard time.
00:49:58.400 --> 00:50:00.320
Yeah, so I'm glad that we disagree on that.
00:50:00.400 --> 00:50:01.599
Uh that's good.
00:50:01.760 --> 00:50:02.000
Yeah.
00:50:02.159 --> 00:50:04.159
Yeah, yeah, we disagree on that for sure.
00:50:04.239 --> 00:50:08.159
Because I think there needs to be some uh level of shame.
00:50:08.320 --> 00:50:14.480
Uh about like I I am ashamed of certain behaviors that I did when I was in the military.
00:50:14.639 --> 00:50:21.679
Uh, the level of caffeine that I ingested, uh, that was ridiculous.
00:50:22.079 --> 00:50:22.639
Ridiculous.
00:50:22.719 --> 00:50:29.679
You go on watch and then you take in an excessive amount of coffee, or um, and I'm ashamed of it, right?
00:50:29.760 --> 00:50:42.159
But it's understanding that well, I'm I'm I have so much shame that I I I'm sharing it with people on a podcast, I'm open about it, and I don't want to go back to that that stage, right?
00:50:42.480 --> 00:50:57.039
And I think that by adding a certain level of shame, understanding I'm not I'm content where I am, but I'm not going to be satisfied, is where people should be.
00:50:57.119 --> 00:51:03.679
Anyway, and and again, it's it's in my views because again, I am ashamed that I finish fifth.
00:51:03.840 --> 00:51:04.159
Why?
00:51:04.400 --> 00:51:23.280
Because I am I I know, and I I said it earlier, I know that I pushed business and other aspects of my life, which are important as well, but I know that I did not do my workouts completely at 100%.
00:51:24.480 --> 00:51:31.679
And because I did not do it at 100%, say I think the the fourth was a minute or two in front of me.
00:51:32.000 --> 00:51:41.360
Because of all of these workouts that I was cheap with, I could have really pushed that extra two minutes.
00:51:41.920 --> 00:51:46.880
I understand that the first one was I think half an hour in front of me.
00:51:47.039 --> 00:51:49.760
So I understand that I would have not been first.
00:51:49.920 --> 00:51:52.400
Okay, so at least there's that okay.
00:51:52.639 --> 00:51:58.480
Whether I finish that cycling or that the product, oh, I pushed a little bit more today.
00:51:58.559 --> 00:52:00.079
Oh, definitely I'm gonna finish first.
00:52:00.159 --> 00:52:03.119
And I'm gonna knock off half an hour on my on my half marathon.
00:52:03.199 --> 00:52:03.840
Yeah, okay.
00:52:04.559 --> 00:52:06.960
I I I understand that concept, right?
00:52:07.039 --> 00:52:19.360
Like I I but at least I understand that I would have been probably fourth, if not third, and at that third level, then at least I would have been the because the the third and fourth were in front of me.
00:52:19.519 --> 00:52:20.960
I could have pushed harder.
00:52:21.119 --> 00:52:26.480
Now I gave my all in the race, but it's all of these workouts leading up to it.
00:52:26.639 --> 00:52:27.760
I know I messed up.
00:52:27.840 --> 00:52:33.920
So there's that that understanding that I am such ashamed that I want to change myself.
00:52:34.159 --> 00:52:36.719
So um, same concept for Christianity.
00:52:36.960 --> 00:52:39.679
I am such ashamed of my sin.
00:52:39.920 --> 00:52:44.559
I am dirty that I want to repent and follow that authority.
00:52:44.719 --> 00:52:46.639
So there needs to be that level of shame.
00:52:46.800 --> 00:53:10.639
Now, uh, back in the day, someone would um um now again, I'm not advocating that we need to go back to that stage, but uh, if someone would behave inappropriately, uh, according to how everyone viewed uh God's word, which might have been right or wrong, we don't have to get into that debate, that person would be shamed, shamed into the city.
00:53:10.800 --> 00:53:15.760
Their business was not uh growing because uh they were they were ashamed.
00:53:15.920 --> 00:53:28.960
So we need to to uh again have that level of shame, but use it in a way that has uh an action being driven out of that shame.
00:53:29.519 --> 00:53:37.440
So um the way I can explain it is there is um negative to negative, negative to positive, and then negative to constructive.
00:53:37.599 --> 00:53:40.320
So something negative somewhere happened in your life.
00:53:40.480 --> 00:53:40.880
That's it.
00:53:41.039 --> 00:53:41.360
Okay.
00:53:41.679 --> 00:54:02.000
Uh for me, uh, one of my best friend at Special Forces, we uh we served uh uh together uh multiple uh places and and love the guy very much, but he passed away and he took his life and he said, Okay, well, there you go.
00:54:02.079 --> 00:54:04.239
I'm throwing it away, right?
00:54:04.320 --> 00:54:11.280
So he died, left his kids, his wife, and um like now I went to the funeral.
00:54:11.440 --> 00:54:12.480
Show up at the funeral.
00:54:12.559 --> 00:54:14.800
Now that's something highly negative, okay.
00:54:14.880 --> 00:54:20.400
And you can use anything that is negative in your life that happened for me, it was coffee or something like that, right?
00:54:20.480 --> 00:54:21.840
Like you can pick any anything.
00:54:21.920 --> 00:54:23.519
So I'm using this example.
00:54:23.679 --> 00:54:27.119
So uh he uh analyzed himself.
00:54:27.280 --> 00:54:28.079
That's negative.
00:54:28.239 --> 00:54:33.280
Now I could have used it and said, okay, negative to negative, so I start drinking, right?
00:54:33.360 --> 00:54:35.599
That's that's that's a negative to a negative.
00:54:35.760 --> 00:54:44.239
It's still solving the situation in some capacity because yes, I am not thinking about it, but I'm numbing it, okay.
00:54:44.400 --> 00:54:47.519
Uh which which is a form, right?
00:54:47.679 --> 00:55:03.280
Then I can use it in terms of uh negative to positive, which a lot of people are doing, where I say he died, but uh here's all the great things, here's all the and I'm switching everything, but changing a negative to a negative is uh just amplifying the situation.
00:55:03.440 --> 00:55:11.280
Negative to positive is changing, uh it takes a lot of energy because energy can be created, can just be transferred.
00:55:11.360 --> 00:55:19.199
And so by transferring it, there is some loss somewhere, and uh so now you're going from negative to positive.
00:55:19.360 --> 00:55:25.280
Now, again, for him, uh for for me, it was negative to constructive.
00:55:25.440 --> 00:55:31.599
And so what I did was um we I went to an event, I was at the funeral, and then there was an event.
00:55:31.760 --> 00:55:38.880
He was known around the world for being one of uh uh the only male that swam that straight twice.
00:55:39.039 --> 00:55:54.000
Uh it was like a 17 kilometer, so what is that, like 11 miles of swimming and tides and shit, like tide shift, uh current shifts, sharks, cold water, and so I took a crew, took a team, and then I swam that straight.
00:55:54.159 --> 00:55:58.559
Now just once, but not like you know, he he he's the only one that swam it twice.
00:55:58.719 --> 00:56:02.000
So we raised$65,000 for chronic illness kids to go to someone.
00:56:02.320 --> 00:56:19.119
Not to put back the spotlight on JD, but more on okay, this is how I use a highly negative and like event that I don't think would trigger anyone to go into something that is constructive, right?
00:56:19.280 --> 00:56:27.840
And so for him, what happened is that um the the reason why he went downward spiral is because there was no shame.
00:56:28.000 --> 00:56:40.960
For him, he was accepted in that uh in that environment that again he created, he definitely created it, and his wife knows it, uh, everybody knows he created that.
00:56:41.039 --> 00:57:02.559
That now, again, that might have been from the it is uh definitely from the military mindset and the right, he developed some things, some mindset in the military, and when he transferred from the military to the civilian, but because of the lack of shame and and uh he again analyzes himself.
00:57:02.719 --> 00:57:05.519
So the way that we can do it is okay, you know what?
00:57:05.679 --> 00:57:08.480
I am not in the state that I want to be in.
00:57:08.639 --> 00:57:12.880
I am not in the like I want to be an uh an engineer.
00:57:13.039 --> 00:57:13.519
That's it.
00:57:13.679 --> 00:57:17.199
Well, to become an engineer, you need to have a certain level of schooling.
00:57:17.360 --> 00:57:17.760
There you go.
00:57:17.840 --> 00:57:18.559
Is it difficult?
00:57:18.639 --> 00:57:18.880
Yes.
00:57:19.039 --> 00:57:19.840
Will it last long?
00:57:19.920 --> 00:57:20.159
Yes.
00:57:20.239 --> 00:57:22.639
I put on a piece of paper, this is what I want to do.
00:57:22.800 --> 00:57:24.079
I'm not at that level.
00:57:24.159 --> 00:57:26.719
Now, is it shameful that I am not at that level?
00:57:26.880 --> 00:57:28.719
I could have started a long time ago.
00:57:28.880 --> 00:57:30.639
I could have started when I was 17 years old.
00:57:30.719 --> 00:57:35.519
And if I look back, I'm thinking, uh, I wish I would have started a long time ago.
00:57:35.760 --> 00:57:37.039
I wish I started.
00:57:37.280 --> 00:57:39.840
Well, that's still a certain level of shame.
00:57:40.000 --> 00:58:01.199
But instead of looking at it from a negative to a negative, saying, Oh, I should have started when I'm 17 investing in uh income properties, all of my money in the military, and now I would have at least 10 complex buildings, and I would have done instead of looking at it this way, you're looking at it from I'm ashamed of what I have done.
00:58:01.360 --> 00:58:04.159
However, here's what I'm gonna do from now on.
00:58:04.320 --> 00:58:24.880
I am not going to do and partake in this type of behavior, and then I'm gonna use it in a way that is constructive, so not negative to negative, that's the easy route, and it will yield some negative results, and then not negative to positive because that's very difficult, and you're still numbing regardless.
00:58:25.039 --> 00:58:34.400
You're still numbing from negative to constructive, you're numbing it in a way where you're gradually pushing a positive outcome and using that.
00:58:34.559 --> 00:58:36.400
You can use it in a breakup as well.
00:58:36.559 --> 00:58:39.440
I've used it in breakups, I've used that mindset as well.
00:58:39.519 --> 00:58:39.760
You know what?
00:58:39.840 --> 00:58:40.880
I'm going through a breakup.
00:58:40.960 --> 00:58:46.480
What can I do to channel that energy and use it as a catalyst?
00:58:46.639 --> 00:58:52.159
And you see this nowadays with a lot of uh kids, uh, mainly many guys.
00:58:52.239 --> 00:58:57.199
Uh the guys go through a breakup and then they say, Oh, I'm gonna get real thick.
00:58:58.960 --> 00:59:04.719
Well, that is a form of way of saying I am ashamed of what I did.
00:59:05.119 --> 00:59:19.519
I had a relationship with that individual that did not align with my values in the first place, which you should have just listened to uh David's podcast, and then you wouldn't have made that mistake, but okay, we won't harp on it.
00:59:21.039 --> 00:59:31.119
That's awesome, and then you get your values, and and you you were ashamed of of that behavior, and now you have a choice.
00:59:31.199 --> 00:59:38.159
You can say, Oh, I miss her so much, I'm just gonna go back home and start drinking my life away.
00:59:38.239 --> 00:59:45.119
And there are these guys that are drinking their life away, and I'm saying, Okay, well, aqua can be any other type of numbing, right?
00:59:45.199 --> 00:59:53.440
Some guys they just go into uh into work, they just go, go, go, go, go into work, and then you just forget about reality and growing.
00:59:53.599 --> 01:00:05.360
Now, there's nothing wrong with going to work, or there's nothing wrong with having a glass of wine or drinking alcohol, there's nothing wrong, it's the excess of it and why you're doing it.
01:00:05.519 --> 01:00:11.119
That is the the wrong part, the lack of self-control that ensues with it.
01:00:11.360 --> 01:00:22.320
But there is that shameful part that yields a constructive, which then that guy goes to the gym and starts humping iron and then understands, whoa, I feel great with it.
01:00:22.559 --> 01:00:23.760
Wow, what did I do?
01:00:24.000 --> 01:00:25.760
Well, here's the the recipe.
01:00:26.079 --> 01:00:33.199
What you did was you transferred something negative, which you're ashamed of, and then you transferred it to something constructive.
01:00:33.360 --> 01:00:41.920
So having a certain level of shame that yield a result, okay, not in terms of uh shame towards negative.
01:00:42.079 --> 01:00:56.000
The reason why we are saying shame or shaming others is wrong, is because oftentimes what happened is that we are shaming people or shaming ourselves, and it yields that negative result.
01:00:56.800 --> 01:01:00.400
So you shame someone and then they go and start, right?
01:01:00.800 --> 01:01:01.360
You're fat.
01:01:01.760 --> 01:01:05.039
Okay, and then they start going and binging, right?
01:01:05.920 --> 01:01:09.360
So that's why there's this negative connotation.
01:01:10.159 --> 01:01:20.639
If you shift that mindset and you say, Okay, I am and and when I say I'm fat, for me right now, as an ultra triathlete, I am overweight.
01:01:20.800 --> 01:01:22.400
I understand that I'm overweight.
01:01:22.559 --> 01:01:24.480
That's because that is my standard.
01:01:24.639 --> 01:01:24.960
Why?
01:01:25.039 --> 01:01:34.000
Because my standard as an ultra triathlete is you have to lose as much weight as possible while still being functional and so different levels.
01:01:34.159 --> 01:01:40.559
Well, if I consider myself right now as it is, as bigger or fat, okay, that is me.
01:01:40.719 --> 01:01:41.760
That is me now.
01:01:41.920 --> 01:01:45.039
What will I do with that level of information?
01:01:45.280 --> 01:01:47.440
Will I use it in a constructive pattern?
01:01:47.599 --> 01:01:48.000
Yes.
01:01:48.159 --> 01:01:48.559
Why?
01:01:48.719 --> 01:01:54.960
One, I'm using it on a podcast to say I am at the moment right now ashamed of my body.
01:01:55.119 --> 01:01:58.639
But what will I do to yield a constructive result?
01:01:58.800 --> 01:02:09.360
Not a positive result to say, well, my my body is fat according to my standard as JD, but I have nice hair, or right, which is positive.
01:02:15.039 --> 01:02:15.599
Exactly.
01:02:15.840 --> 01:02:20.079
So, or changing from a negative to a negative, saying, Well, you know what?
01:02:20.239 --> 01:02:28.559
There's nothing I can change, or I've tried everything, or all sorts of excuses again to yell the negative to a negative.
01:02:28.719 --> 01:02:32.559
I can say, Here, I'm going on a podcast, I'm ashamed of my body right now.
01:02:32.719 --> 01:02:38.559
I will train, I will be better because I want to be at that level in my life.
01:02:38.719 --> 01:02:40.079
That's where I want to go.
01:02:40.159 --> 01:02:40.559
Why?
01:02:40.719 --> 01:02:48.960
Because when I look at my piece of paper, that's the type of body I want, that's the type of mindset that I want, that's the type, that's the goal that I want.
01:02:49.119 --> 01:02:53.119
And based on my value as a Christian, well, here it is.
01:02:53.199 --> 01:02:54.960
I'm the temple of the Holy Spirit.
01:02:55.119 --> 01:03:02.000
I don't want the Holy Spirit to come into that type of temple where I'm undisciplined and on the lack of self-control.
01:03:02.320 --> 01:03:03.280
I don't want that.
01:03:03.440 --> 01:03:08.800
So, therefore, based on my standard, then that's where I'm gonna head, right?
01:03:08.880 --> 01:03:11.519
So that's where we would differ based on shame.
01:03:11.679 --> 01:03:15.199
Again, different types of ways of looking at it, but yeah.
01:03:15.599 --> 01:03:24.960
And I think that's why it's super important that we hash out the conversation because in the middle of it is a great uh lack of a better word, construct in dealing with the shame.
01:03:25.039 --> 01:03:35.360
So where I say, Hey, uh, because where I fear is that people paralyze themselves more than they move forward because people don't have the ability to practice what you just said.
01:03:35.679 --> 01:03:42.719
Um when they do, because this construct is here and it's never wrong.
01:03:42.880 --> 01:03:55.119
If you can take your negative and you can turn it into a construct where you say, I'm going to slowly work it into something that's in my favor, and I'm gonna be disciplined and diligent and do everything I need to do, that will always yield fruit for you.
01:03:55.360 --> 01:04:04.239
Um, and so I think that's why it's really important to have the conversation because where my brain would have said is you know, make sure you're being nice to yourself, make sure you're not shaming yourself.
01:04:04.400 --> 01:04:06.639
Um, so that way you're not paralyzing yourself.
01:04:06.800 --> 01:04:15.920
But even better than that, if you can have a hard conversation with yourself where you say, I'm not gonna lie to myself and say I don't feel the shame, and I'm gonna address it.
01:04:16.079 --> 01:04:17.280
Well, how do I address it best?
01:04:17.360 --> 01:04:18.639
Well, now you have the format.
01:04:18.800 --> 01:04:26.400
I take this negative, this thing that I hate or resent or that is ailing me, and I slowly uh bend it into my favor.
01:04:26.559 --> 01:04:36.480
I think that's uh that's like the Marcus Aurelius quote where he says, uh, the meaning of life is taking uh taking the the hand that life deals you and playing it as if it as if it were your own.
01:04:36.719 --> 01:04:44.000
And uh you know, sometimes it's not gonna crack out the way you want it to, and you have to you have to change it.
01:04:44.159 --> 01:04:46.480
You know, it it's it's up to your mentality.
01:04:46.719 --> 01:04:48.480
But awesome, awesome.
01:04:48.639 --> 01:04:56.639
Well, then I think the the next place that we'll go then is what have you drawn from your military career?
01:04:56.880 --> 01:04:59.360
So reorient it back to our prompt.
01:05:00.320 --> 01:05:04.239
Uh so from your military career, um, what were the things?
01:05:04.320 --> 01:05:10.800
Because you said you were 17, you came there, you you felt like you were gonna seek discipline and that discipline was going to happen to you.
01:05:10.960 --> 01:05:14.400
Uh, and then you got there and half the people were disciplined, half the people weren't.
01:05:14.639 --> 01:05:16.960
Um, what were the things that they taught you?
01:05:17.119 --> 01:05:22.559
Because I find that I have certain things in my life where it's like if I did not learn that in the army, I'd be screwed.
01:05:23.519 --> 01:05:27.679
I'd have no luck uh in terms of generating that discipline on my own.
01:05:27.920 --> 01:05:30.320
For example, I work out almost every single day.
01:05:30.480 --> 01:05:30.719
Why?
01:05:31.039 --> 01:05:32.719
Because I did in the army because it's important.
01:05:32.800 --> 01:05:34.239
Because if you don't, you're not war ready.
01:05:34.320 --> 01:05:38.159
And then my brain, you know, you don't age well, you don't age gracefully.
01:05:38.400 --> 01:05:50.960
Um but what is there anything from your military career that has shined through and has helped you um in terms of your discipline, or have you totally started from scratch?
01:05:51.199 --> 01:05:54.559
Well, you yeah, you never start totally from scratch for sure.
01:05:54.800 --> 01:05:59.440
Um yeah, it's it's definitely the structure.
01:05:59.920 --> 01:06:11.360
So if you have a structure and systems in place and also the mission, which I talked about earlier, so you have that mission, right?
01:06:11.519 --> 01:06:16.880
For for the military, it's a mission for the civilian, it's just a goal, right?
01:06:17.280 --> 01:06:24.800
You're going to do another race for them or for the civilian, it's uh just another race.
01:06:24.960 --> 01:06:45.760
But for me, I'm looking at it as okay, if I don't finish this race, if I don't prepare well, if I this is a battle plan, like I mean I make sure that this mission is complete, and so uh there's the mission aspect, and then there is the uh structure and the systems in place.
01:06:45.920 --> 01:06:48.159
You need to set standards for yourself.
01:06:48.239 --> 01:06:54.239
This this structure needs to be in place in order to acquire a certain level of discipline.
01:06:54.480 --> 01:06:54.960
Awesome.
01:06:55.119 --> 01:06:56.960
I I wholeheartedly agree.
01:06:57.119 --> 01:06:59.840
Um, I think the thing that I agree with most is the mission.
01:06:59.920 --> 01:07:01.679
You know, for me, I'm mission-oriented.
01:07:01.760 --> 01:07:04.719
You know, when I lose my mission, I become a derelict.
01:07:04.880 --> 01:07:05.519
It is not good.
01:07:05.599 --> 01:07:07.519
That's why it's so important I meditate every day.
01:07:07.679 --> 01:07:09.840
Because if I don't, then I lose sight of things.
01:07:09.920 --> 01:07:14.639
Um, yeah, JD, it is important to set a goal, it is important to aspire.
01:07:14.880 --> 01:07:15.840
Where are you going?
01:07:16.000 --> 01:07:16.960
Where is your next goal?
01:07:17.119 --> 01:07:18.239
What are you striving for?
01:07:18.400 --> 01:07:19.840
Do you have anything on your horizon?
01:07:20.079 --> 01:07:29.599
For me, yeah, we're growing the company right now, and uh we are also expanding our philanthropic ways, so that's where we're heading right now.
01:07:29.760 --> 01:07:42.159
Uh, in terms of race, I don't uh I just finished the Trail Half Marathon World Championship, but otherwise, uh, I try to give back to the communities and uh help out as much as possible.
01:07:42.400 --> 01:07:44.960
And uh yeah, that's that's what I am doing right now.
01:07:45.199 --> 01:07:45.679
Gotcha.
01:07:45.840 --> 01:07:46.400
Perfect.
01:07:46.559 --> 01:07:50.000
Well, JD, I love this conversation.
01:07:50.320 --> 01:07:52.960
I don't have anything left to ask you.
01:07:53.039 --> 01:08:02.079
I think we covered a lot of corners, and instead of putting us both through this awkward thing where we try to extend it for the nine minutes we have, we might as well just call it a good product.
01:08:02.320 --> 01:08:04.800
Uh, but did you have anything you wanted to say?
01:08:04.960 --> 01:08:07.920
Any questions you wanted to ask, anything you wanted to mention?
01:08:08.159 --> 01:08:09.360
Um, please feel free.
01:08:09.440 --> 01:08:10.719
I I want to make sure you have time to.
01:08:11.039 --> 01:08:22.000
Well, the only part that I would uh say is be serious what you want in life, to be very direct with what you want and ones and to add your values.
01:08:22.159 --> 01:08:25.119
Uh definitely be serious about your values, right?
01:08:25.199 --> 01:08:28.079
If you are a Christian, be serious about Christianity.
01:08:28.159 --> 01:08:28.640
Yeah, right.
01:08:28.880 --> 01:08:33.680
Even God says I don't like a He hates a lukewarm Christian, right?
01:08:33.840 --> 01:08:36.640
So uh you are to be serious about everything.
01:08:37.680 --> 01:08:41.439
Yeah, if you want to work out, be serious about your workout.
01:08:41.840 --> 01:08:46.000
This is this is life as a as a whole, so be serious about it.
01:08:47.119 --> 01:08:48.960
Beautiful, beautiful, yeah.
01:08:49.199 --> 01:08:50.560
I I completely agree.
01:08:50.720 --> 01:08:56.720
Be serious about it, have your mission, have your structures in place when you're dealing with shame.
01:08:56.880 --> 01:09:00.319
Don't paralyze yourself, turn that negative into a construct.
01:09:00.479 --> 01:09:02.479
This has been a great conversation, JD.
01:09:02.720 --> 01:09:09.439
Um, I will make sure that all of your links and bios and your website and everything will be properly attached.
01:09:09.600 --> 01:09:13.600
Um, but yeah, it'll be attached down below if you're watching on YouTube.
01:09:14.000 --> 01:09:16.880
And yeah, I hope you guys have a fantastic rest of your day.
01:09:16.960 --> 01:09:18.239
And uh yeah, we'll see you soon.
00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:00.959
Hello, everybody.
00:00:01.040 --> 00:00:02.080
I am David.
00:00:02.240 --> 00:00:05.280
I am the personal trainer here with Balance and Birch.
00:00:05.360 --> 00:00:07.919
And this is JD Tremblay.
00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:09.759
Uh, did you want to take a second to introduce yourself?
00:00:10.000 --> 00:00:21.359
I'm David Camble, and um I am uh the director of high performance at Hungry Warrior Academy, where we help men build uh physically, mentally, and also spiritually uh throughout deck assistants.
00:00:21.600 --> 00:00:22.480
And he's he's being humble.
00:00:22.559 --> 00:00:27.920
He's leaving out the fact he's a phenomenal athlete, has done many athletic feats and crushed all of them.
00:00:28.160 --> 00:00:41.840
Um, but uh the biggest reason why we're having a conversation today is because a lot of people have different methodologies and different philosophies when it comes to optimizing, when it comes to building structure outside.
00:00:41.920 --> 00:00:50.960
Uh like I know me and JD had military service, so we had X exterior structure in our lives, or some people had school and college, and how to get structure in your life after that.
00:00:51.039 --> 00:00:56.399
Um, so ultimately what we're gonna talk about is the ways that we found best uh navigating that.
00:00:56.640 --> 00:01:03.200
And yeah, we might disagree, we might agree, but the the fun part is gonna be having the conversation and figuring out how you all feel.
00:01:03.439 --> 00:01:04.719
All right, well, thanks for having me, David.
00:01:04.879 --> 00:01:05.760
Yeah, of course.
00:01:05.920 --> 00:01:15.120
So the first question that I have for you is how do you navigate your hunger for more with your aspirations to be content?
00:01:15.200 --> 00:01:21.280
And I know we talked a little bit about this before, but I'm gonna grill you a little bit deeper on it this time now that we're recording.
00:01:23.680 --> 00:01:24.239
All right.
00:01:24.719 --> 00:01:33.359
Uh the idea of being content is that you're in you're able to enjoy the moment, but you're never satisfied.
00:01:33.519 --> 00:01:38.560
And so there's a difference between the two where um for me, right?
00:01:38.719 --> 00:01:46.879
Um, I was at uh the Trail Half Marathon World Championship a few weeks ago, and I finished fifth.
00:01:47.840 --> 00:01:58.640
And fifth is not a podium, fifth does not get recognition, fifth does not amount to how much I trained, and so I finished fifth.
00:01:59.359 --> 00:02:23.840
And I was content, content to be at the at the world championship, content that I was not injured, content that uh I participated, but then people put too much emphasis on the part where you are comfortable, which is very comfortable to someone it caters to your emotion, to your feelings, right?
00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:31.680
And so uh the satisfaction part is that I am not satisfied about my performance.
00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:40.319
I uh put too much emphasis on work versus uh the intensity of my my workouts.
00:02:40.719 --> 00:02:49.599
Um my my nutrition played a lot uh into my training, and so I neglected that.
00:02:49.840 --> 00:02:56.159
So there's that deep sense of hunger to develop to achieve that next level.
00:02:56.319 --> 00:03:04.319
So it's not satisfied by well, I finish first or I finish second, or you're always constantly trying to improve.
00:03:05.039 --> 00:03:14.639
And so the one of the ways that I can explain it is the idea and uh the of between feelings and emotions.
00:03:14.800 --> 00:03:17.520
So feelings are an experience of life.
00:03:17.759 --> 00:03:26.719
I'm content with uh happiness today, but uh it might be a sad situation, but but I'm happy so it's just an experience of life.
00:03:26.800 --> 00:03:43.919
Like I'm experiencing life, but I'm not basing my whole decision and my entire day based on my feelings versus emotion, and emotion is completely different, where now you are able to gear your life towards it because emotions you can calculate it.
00:03:44.080 --> 00:03:49.360
If I surprise you, then heart rate goes higher, uh pupils are dilated.
00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:53.280
I can calculate all of those, and then now I can make better decisions.
00:03:53.360 --> 00:04:11.680
And so if you're basing your decisions based on your um emotional state, because you're able to calculate it and you're able to regulate these factors and not your your your feelings, then that would be one example that I could provide uh on how to cultivate that hunger.
00:04:11.919 --> 00:04:18.000
Yeah, and using those things that kind of will be more so attributed as weaknesses and expecting them.
00:04:18.240 --> 00:04:19.199
This is going to come.
00:04:19.360 --> 00:04:21.360
How do I best prepare myself for them?
00:04:21.600 --> 00:04:35.600
I think I think that's a really good outlook on things, especially um because I find myself, and now I put myself in a different category, and that I think many roads lead to Rome, where I find myself in life comes in phases.
00:04:35.759 --> 00:04:40.959
And so I find myself like I'll have content phases and I'll have phases where I'm super driven.
00:04:41.120 --> 00:04:53.600
Would you say it's when you're describing it, it's more so like I'm coming in into a phase, or where you're saying like it's like this is a constant, like I am in a constant hunger and I'm content because you're not married to these things, right?
00:04:53.680 --> 00:04:56.000
Like you have multiple eggs and multiple baskets.
00:04:56.160 --> 00:05:02.720
Uh, would you say it's more of a perpetual thing for you, striving and and uh pushing for these things?
00:05:03.040 --> 00:05:09.600
Or does contentness kind of come in a phase where you're like, let's really focus being content for a month and a half, two months?
00:05:09.839 --> 00:05:16.240
Because I know that for me uh really helps me wind down uh when I go through a period of striving.
00:05:16.319 --> 00:05:17.360
That's almost what I call it.
00:05:17.439 --> 00:05:20.959
Is it's it's a necessary recharge period for now.
00:05:21.040 --> 00:05:22.639
I'm now I know I'm on the go.
00:05:22.720 --> 00:05:28.240
I'm feeling my motivation, I'm feeling driven, I'm feeling disciplined, and I've already rested, so I'm good to go.
00:05:28.399 --> 00:05:29.680
Um, does that make sense?
00:05:29.920 --> 00:05:38.160
Yeah, um, I would see it as more of a perpetual so the ladder, and that's uh because again, it's it you're constantly improving.
00:05:38.399 --> 00:05:43.759
So um the way of content being content is all the time.
00:05:43.839 --> 00:05:45.360
Like I am all the time content.
00:05:45.439 --> 00:05:47.920
I'm in that period of life, I am content.
00:05:48.160 --> 00:05:50.560
So um, yes, it's fifth.
00:05:50.720 --> 00:05:55.439
I'm I'm still content, and I could have not even finished it.
00:05:55.600 --> 00:05:59.279
I'm gonna be content because that's that's what I was given.
00:05:59.360 --> 00:06:01.600
That's the output that I delivered.
00:06:01.680 --> 00:06:03.759
So I'll be content no matter what.
00:06:03.920 --> 00:06:21.680
But the problem that I have is when people are either comparing it to others and saying, Well, I'm not content because of um that person finishing first, or uh, I could have been so there's that difference, and that's why I said, Well, content versus satisfaction.
00:06:21.759 --> 00:06:22.959
So I'm never satisfied.
00:06:23.120 --> 00:06:25.040
No, I will never be satisfied.
00:06:25.199 --> 00:06:28.000
And that's like food, essentially, right?
00:06:28.079 --> 00:06:30.319
When you're looking at food, you're hungry.
00:06:30.480 --> 00:06:33.439
Well, you're never completely satisfied.
00:06:33.600 --> 00:06:56.240
Yes, in that particular meal, you're going to be satisfied because you over ate or overindulged, but even then you're going to learn something in that process because, well, you overate, and so maybe you're going to be sick as a result, or maybe you understand that eating certain type of food creates certain types of inflammation.
00:06:56.399 --> 00:06:58.959
And so, again, that is the learning process.
00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:02.720
That satisfaction, that hunger is always there.
00:07:02.879 --> 00:07:17.279
And you wake up in the morning, you will be hungry, you will be hungry for some type of food, but it's understanding what type of food you should be eating that create that level of inflammation, so you can always improve on that sense.
00:07:17.439 --> 00:07:22.319
And the only level to be able to improve is the emotional state, right?
00:07:22.480 --> 00:07:38.639
Which I explain, or being able to look at these facts versus and and logic and science versus just looking at your uh your your your feelings, like now you're not just eating a dessert because well, but you feel like it.
00:07:38.800 --> 00:07:43.040
Now you're eating a dessert because there is a process to it, right?
00:07:43.279 --> 00:07:58.399
If you are designed to go and you're an athlete, and right, if you're not an athlete and you just want to and you are somewhat healthy, eating that dessert is based on your feelings, and then there are these times where I just yeah, I indulge in it, but that's an experience of life.
00:07:58.560 --> 00:08:00.399
I'm experiencing food, right?
00:08:00.480 --> 00:08:02.000
I'm experiencing that hunger.
00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:03.360
Now that's being content.
00:08:03.519 --> 00:08:24.560
So whether I eat the cake because I feel like it, or whether I eat the cake because uh I am going to use it to increase my carbs intake and use it to go to the gym right after and then burn it off because it's it's quick fuel, then I'm still going to be content.
00:08:24.720 --> 00:08:26.720
So it's still an ongoing process.
00:08:26.879 --> 00:08:31.519
And that's one thing that I really like about how you phrase it because you don't marry the two ideas.
00:08:31.680 --> 00:09:00.080
00:09:00.240 --> 00:09:02.320
And I've always found you have to become content with it.
00:09:02.480 --> 00:09:03.840
Otherwise, you're gonna be fighting yourself.
00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:05.440
Like, I am this way a little bit.
00:09:05.600 --> 00:09:09.679
How do I make a plan to not be that way or to not have that show off in every way?
00:09:09.840 --> 00:09:15.200
Like I know for me, I love sweets more than anything in the world, especially fresh baked goods.
00:09:15.440 --> 00:09:19.360
Um, and I I would eat, eat, eat, eat, eat compulsively.
00:09:19.440 --> 00:09:23.919
And I've suffered all the health effects that came with that, especially uh in high school.
00:09:24.080 --> 00:09:32.000
I would always feel bad and groggy, and I I never I worked out extensively and I was always a little overweight, which I always made me in my head.
00:09:32.080 --> 00:09:36.960
Um, and it was because I couldn't actually come to terms with the fact that I had a problem with sweets.
00:09:37.039 --> 00:09:37.840
I would lie to myself.
00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:40.960
I'd be like, oh, well, I had four cookies and I work out.
00:09:41.120 --> 00:09:51.200
And I think where you're getting at is I have an honesty with where I am, and that gives you the contentness to say, I that is why I'm striving, and I'm gonna keep trying to get better.
00:09:51.440 --> 00:09:53.840
So I I really like the way you phrase that.
00:09:54.080 --> 00:10:03.440
Um, another thing that I have that I wanted to ask you is is contentness the number one thing that's driving your optimization?
00:10:03.600 --> 00:10:11.600
When I say that, is it your desire to be content or your desire to do great things that makes you make yourself the best version of yourself?
00:10:11.840 --> 00:10:15.120
Well, they they both have their their own path.
00:10:15.279 --> 00:10:20.720
It would be like asking the question, um, what's more important, discipline or motivation?
00:10:20.879 --> 00:10:24.480
And then many people will say, Well, it's about discipline, much better.
00:10:24.960 --> 00:10:28.240
Well, then again, I would say which one is better for you?
00:10:28.399 --> 00:10:31.360
Is it your endocrine system or is it your nervous system?
00:10:31.519 --> 00:10:35.120
They're both regulated to operate at different intensities.
00:10:35.279 --> 00:10:40.720
So now you have your nervous system, which is quick, and your endocrine system, which takes much longer.
00:10:40.960 --> 00:10:45.360
The motivation is quick, and then the discipline takes much longer.
00:10:45.519 --> 00:10:47.279
So is it content?
00:10:48.240 --> 00:10:54.799
So the question is is posed in a way where both would be equally important.
00:10:55.120 --> 00:11:04.799
I and that I think that's really important too, because I think it really uh sets in stone the idea that these are two separate concepts, that you're growing these separately.
00:11:05.039 --> 00:11:13.200
So, how do you because I I personally am not default content, I don't wake up in the morning and be super content.
00:11:13.519 --> 00:11:16.960
Um, I find myself journaling, I find myself reading quotes.
00:11:17.039 --> 00:11:22.080
Um, so what are the ways that you and yourself throughout your day, or maybe it comes naturally to you?
00:11:22.159 --> 00:11:23.120
Tell us more about that.
00:11:23.279 --> 00:11:24.799
How are you feeling content?
00:11:24.960 --> 00:11:25.759
Do you do anything?
00:11:25.840 --> 00:11:28.799
Is there anything in your routine that you have to do, or does it come naturally?
00:11:28.960 --> 00:11:33.759
No, no, it doesn't come naturally because the human body is not designed for thriving.
00:11:33.840 --> 00:11:39.440
The human body is designed for survival, and so we have to learn these patterns.
00:11:39.759 --> 00:12:06.799
00:12:06.879 --> 00:12:12.720
Like when I say I start my day, this is not a every single day it will happen.
00:12:12.879 --> 00:12:17.679
Uh, we had an event this weekend, so we had to wake up at four o'clock in the morning.
00:12:17.759 --> 00:12:23.759
I did not wake up in the morning and read my Bible and then spent 12 minutes just meditating.
00:12:23.840 --> 00:12:28.559
I I did okay, so this is not something that did happen.
00:12:28.639 --> 00:12:32.320
Okay, there are other parts of my life that will happen for sure.
00:12:32.480 --> 00:12:34.399
Uh, but meditation is a huge part.
00:12:34.639 --> 00:12:52.399
There are several different ways of meditation, and uh the main part that people have to understand is that um when when the brain shift between brain waves, uh it's been studied with EEGs in the book How God Rewires Your Brain.
00:12:52.559 --> 00:13:00.639
And um scientists that again, when they say God, uh, those guys are not Christian, though the entire book is not based on Christianity.
00:13:00.720 --> 00:13:17.679
They pick different faith and then they analyze them through EEGs or electroence phylogram that calculates uh how brain waves operate, and they prove that it's a minimum of 12 minutes that you require two shifts from one to another.
00:13:17.840 --> 00:13:22.480
And so there are several ways that people can implement it in their life right now.
00:13:22.639 --> 00:13:38.799
One is the 12-minute minimum, uh, and then there is the passive and active, and so uh passive is you are going to break it down into two where you're either allowing your mind to just free flow, that's the one I prefer.
00:13:38.960 --> 00:13:44.960
Uh, and then there are other people that just focus on one aspect, so focus on their breathing or focus.
00:13:45.039 --> 00:13:46.320
I tend not to do that.
00:13:46.480 --> 00:13:53.279
Uh, that's because I try to focus on several uh things throughout the day, anyway.
00:13:53.360 --> 00:13:57.519
So might as well just allow my brain to just go free flowing for 12 minutes.
00:13:57.679 --> 00:13:59.120
And then there is the active side.
00:13:59.279 --> 00:14:06.399
The active side that many coaches out there are forgetting is um the aspect of that zone one, right?
00:14:06.639 --> 00:14:10.720
Which if you're not familiar with it, like I know you are definitely, right?
00:14:10.879 --> 00:14:30.080
But for those that don't know that are listening, zone one is you're able to uh perform the activity that has been given to you, and you're also able to have a coherent conversation with the other person, so you're not out of breath that you're able to say for for some people it's going for a hike, okay.
00:14:30.159 --> 00:14:41.919
That would be zone one for them, for them, but there are other people just going for a walk 10 minutes, and then after 10 minutes they're out of breath, so uh maybe five minutes or even just getting off the couch.
00:14:42.399 --> 00:14:50.639
It depends on your level of fitness and how your body is designed at that moment, and that's uh that that's a ballpark for zone one.
00:14:50.799 --> 00:14:53.679
Okay, so that would be the active uh component.
00:14:53.840 --> 00:14:56.320
I tend to do some rock climbing sometimes.
00:14:56.480 --> 00:15:06.320
I uh I like rock climbing, uh, so it plays on your spatial recognition where you don't you cannot look at your feed, but it has to be placed on a certain hold.
00:15:06.480 --> 00:15:07.919
So I I like that.
00:15:08.080 --> 00:15:13.919
So those are some types of uh ways that I I used in my daily life, uh even today.
00:15:14.159 --> 00:15:14.720
Yeah, yeah.
00:15:14.799 --> 00:15:21.919
And I I really like that you have the inactive and the active, because I'm a big proponent of we have to use our bodies, we have to push our bodies.
00:15:22.000 --> 00:15:23.440
If you don't use it, you lose it.
00:15:23.600 --> 00:15:29.519
Um, but I find so many people kind of neglect the importance of the mental growth as well.
00:15:29.679 --> 00:15:35.200
Uh, and that's why I really love your approach that you said that you do with meditation, which is like, I'm gonna let my brain run with this.
00:15:35.440 --> 00:15:40.879
Because I know for me, I I will do like Wim Hof breathing and stuff like that, and it'll be great for math.
00:15:41.120 --> 00:15:43.200
You know, I'll never track Wim Hof breathing at all.
00:15:43.279 --> 00:15:44.240
It's wonderful.
00:15:44.480 --> 00:15:53.360
Um, but my best moments in myself where it's I bring myself to say, this is why this really matters in my life.
00:15:53.519 --> 00:16:02.879
Uh, you know, uh, I guess practicing the mindfulness in my meditation is is is my favorite thing because I always ask myself, instead of limiting thoughts, I'm gonna invite them.
00:16:03.039 --> 00:16:08.639
Why of all things in the world, while I'm sitting down here and thinking, did I think of being a son?
00:16:08.799 --> 00:16:12.000
Did I think of uh a friendship that I have?
00:16:12.159 --> 00:16:17.519
And oftentimes it's because you actually need to think about that and put some excess thought to it.
00:16:17.679 --> 00:16:27.840
So that's what I use meditation a lot for is to grow and and uh I guess refine my own philosophical beliefs to identify and address relationships that need work.
00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:39.679
Because again, I think that helps with the contentness, because if I have my life in order, then I can get to the gym, and the gym isn't this this daunting thing that's weighing on me because the rest of my life is stressful.
00:16:39.840 --> 00:16:43.440
Um, so I I really like that approach where it's inactive and active.
00:16:43.519 --> 00:16:46.480
I've I've I've personally never heard it put that way, but I really like that.
00:16:46.639 --> 00:16:48.080
Yeah, it's one way to do it.
00:16:48.159 --> 00:16:51.279
To me, I give it all to God, right?
00:16:51.440 --> 00:16:55.200
To me, I understand that there are variables that I can control.
00:16:55.679 --> 00:17:01.039
Uh, there, for example, like my my physical state, I can improve it.
00:17:01.200 --> 00:17:10.319
For my mental state, I can improve it, certain types of supplements or the mindfulness, but there are other variables that I will not be able to control.
00:17:10.720 --> 00:17:18.799
Uh, even in the epic decay, I say that physically there's a lot of people that would be able to do all of the races that I've done.
00:17:18.960 --> 00:17:31.759
If you're adding to the pool of individuals that would be competing, the mantle side, I would say, yes, there are some people, I would say at least more than three that would complete more than the epic decade.
00:17:31.839 --> 00:17:55.519
But because it's the variables that you can't control that made me one of three people to finish the epic decor, or uh some of these races that I've done around the world that or or even all the things that I've accomplished, it's because there are variables I can't control, and I have to be content and understand at that specific moment, this is where God wants me to be.
00:17:55.680 --> 00:18:00.480
Like I went through this difficult time of my life for a certain reason.
00:18:00.640 --> 00:18:07.359
I have to understand sometimes where I need to be, and I don't need to understand why I am in this position.
00:18:07.519 --> 00:18:14.799
For example, I to go do the epic deca, I didn't have the money, and um, I sold my house.
00:18:15.039 --> 00:18:18.640
So I was homeless when I came back from the epic deca.
00:18:18.880 --> 00:18:37.680
And now I was thinking, oh, I'm gonna get fame, uh, I'm gonna be uh known around the world, and I'm gonna get money and sponsorship, and um and none of this happened, none of it happened, and even then I got more negative than positive.
00:18:37.839 --> 00:18:44.480
People were telling me you need to be in a mental institute for what you've done, uh, people were rejecting me.
00:18:44.640 --> 00:18:48.480
Uh, and and there was a lot of pride that came with it.
00:18:48.720 --> 00:18:58.160
And so what I learned after was that the pride had to decrease so that I could be more even prepared to help other people.
00:18:58.400 --> 00:19:28.319
00:19:28.480 --> 00:19:32.079
And so for me and you, that's easy because you know we're Christians, we believe in God.
00:19:32.160 --> 00:19:42.400
But if even if you're secular, even if you don't believe in God, surrendering to a purpose, if you don't because what I always try to tell people is life incurs challenges, we are guaranteed the challenges.
00:19:42.480 --> 00:19:44.559
It was gonna be hard, it wasn't easy.
00:19:44.799 --> 00:19:51.599
And if you aren't pursuing or striving or building towards something, this is gonna be a miserable drive.
00:19:51.680 --> 00:19:53.839
It's gonna it's gonna be a pretty hard life.
00:19:54.240 --> 00:20:01.039
And you know, so that that's uh, you know, especially where you're saying, like, I don't know why I'm doing this, people are calling me crazy.
00:20:01.200 --> 00:20:03.359
I sold my house and took a bet on myself.
00:20:03.519 --> 00:20:03.839
Why?
00:20:04.000 --> 00:20:07.279
Because God told you to, you know, why because your purpose told you to.
00:20:07.359 --> 00:20:12.079
And so, you know, where I I definitely uh am akin to that with where my contentness comes from.
00:20:12.160 --> 00:20:17.279
It's like, you know, uh, I don't know a lot of the reasons why I do some of the things I do, but I just feel God tells me to.
00:20:17.680 --> 00:20:30.480
If it's a purpose in your life, whether it's a political purpose or it's uh uh uh an outreach purpose or whatever it is, if you don't have that purpose, I find you're not going to incur the suffering necessary to actually become a good person.
00:20:30.640 --> 00:20:31.680
Because why are you doing it?
00:20:32.000 --> 00:20:37.200
You know, like life is already hard, you're gonna suffer more uh without a cause.
00:20:37.599 --> 00:20:38.960
That doesn't make any sense.
00:20:39.119 --> 00:21:04.160
00:21:04.319 --> 00:21:09.440
They will live for the rest of their lives not knowing, could I have done it, could I not have done it?
00:21:09.599 --> 00:21:14.160
The person who actually tries, he says, I could do it, I could not do it, and you and now you know.
00:21:14.319 --> 00:21:22.480
There's a and so I think there's a piece to actually attempting and doing the crazy thing because again, JD, you could, you did, you know, and I think that's a beautiful thing.
00:21:22.960 --> 00:21:25.119
Yeah, exactly.
00:21:25.279 --> 00:21:47.279
Yeah, and what so now I get contentment through doing meditation, prayer, and uh you also get contentment by for me, it's reading the Bible because uh and for for people that uh don't follow Jesus, uh, it would be about following a certain set of values.
00:21:47.519 --> 00:21:53.200
So understanding your values, which just structure would create a certain form of discipline.
00:21:53.440 --> 00:21:59.519
The way I can frame it is um, and maybe you can tell me more about your point of view on that.
00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:14.160
You were in the military, is that to me when I joined, I was 17 years old, so just a chop, couldn't even buy a pack of cigarettes or drink my own beer without getting it from somebody else, and then I was given a gun, right?
00:22:14.319 --> 00:22:16.559
So uh here's the military for you.
00:22:16.720 --> 00:22:22.960
So I thought as a civilian, even as a kid, that as soon as I would join, I would get discipline immediately.
00:22:23.039 --> 00:22:28.799
You're getting discipline, you're getting resilience, and you're gonna be working out, you're gonna be in shape.
00:22:28.880 --> 00:22:30.079
Like, this is the military.
00:22:30.880 --> 00:22:39.599
And so I joined, and little did I know, I looked around, I said, there there's there's a lot of people that are disciplined, and there's a lot of people that are not disciplined.
00:22:39.839 --> 00:22:42.720
And I try to figure out okay, well, what's the problem?
00:22:43.039 --> 00:22:47.200
Like, there are people that are disciplined, not disciplined, like what is the cause?
00:22:47.359 --> 00:22:53.200
So, what I discovered is that the military gives you a structure, it gives you that system.
00:22:53.599 --> 00:23:01.920
If you follow the structure, if you follow the system or those standards, if you follow the standards, then you acquire discipline.
00:23:02.079 --> 00:23:05.759
It's the same, except that the civilian is way more difficult.
00:23:05.920 --> 00:23:16.559
Oh, switching from the military to the civilian, it's it's one of the most difficult parts because they're telling you, oh, you need to separate military from civilian life.
00:23:16.720 --> 00:23:18.880
No, I I it took me years.
00:23:19.119 --> 00:23:28.319
Now you have to merge the two together and understand, okay, I I was a soldier and I will always be a soldier, but I am also a civilian.
00:23:28.400 --> 00:23:30.319
So now you're merging the two together.
00:23:30.480 --> 00:23:34.160
And so now you're creating that structure, you're creating that system.
00:23:34.240 --> 00:23:36.640
But now you're in a civilian, you can do whatever you want.
00:23:36.880 --> 00:23:39.599
If I want to walk a certain way, I'm walking a certain way.
00:23:39.759 --> 00:23:42.559
I don't have someone telling me this is the way to walk.
00:23:42.720 --> 00:23:54.640
I I don't tell, hey, if I want to wear a dress shirt, that's that's what I want to wear, but no one's telling me, oh, your dress shirt is crooked over here, or no one's gonna inspect my bed.
00:23:54.799 --> 00:24:06.400
Or so now what God gives you, or or having this framework where you have values, you're able to be content because you understand that these are your values.
00:24:06.559 --> 00:24:10.240
You're going on a date, the girl doesn't fit the values.
00:24:10.400 --> 00:24:11.039
That's fine.
00:24:11.200 --> 00:24:12.640
I'm content with it.
00:24:12.799 --> 00:24:14.319
I had a fun time.
00:24:14.799 --> 00:24:15.680
It's okay.
00:24:15.839 --> 00:24:17.759
We're just parting ways, and that's it.
00:24:17.920 --> 00:24:19.839
You're on your journey, I'm on my journey.
00:24:20.000 --> 00:24:21.440
You're not a Christian, I'm a Christian.
00:24:21.519 --> 00:24:22.079
There you go.
00:24:22.160 --> 00:24:27.519
You can go on your own, but I will respect my boundaries based on my system of value.
00:24:27.680 --> 00:24:32.559
I will do my best and I will be content when I please my God.
00:24:32.799 --> 00:24:40.720
My God is in the Bible, He gave me that set of rules, He gave me that, so I can gain discipline, so I can gain resilience.
00:24:40.880 --> 00:24:50.880
And then when you look at it from a non-secular perspective or like a person that is not a Christian, then at least if you haven't written down all your values, okay.
00:24:50.960 --> 00:24:55.519
For for me, it's easy because boy, I I I have it written down already.
00:24:58.000 --> 00:25:01.119
Like, well, people died to give me that book.
00:25:02.880 --> 00:25:06.079
It's already written down, like it's like the cheat code of all.
00:25:06.640 --> 00:25:08.079
It's so painful.
00:25:08.319 --> 00:25:27.279
But for yeah, but for people that don't believe in Jesus, well, he he here are all these stories or here are all these stories, or here are the stories that you can make up, or like the value system that you can make up, and then create it based on your stories and your values, enumerate it, look at it, and say, Well, this is what I want you.
00:25:27.680 --> 00:25:32.720
So now you're able to be content because you're living according to your values.
00:25:32.960 --> 00:25:45.279
So I would say pick your values before your goals, which, if you pick your values before your goals, then you can pick any goal that you want, because any goal can become a, in my view, a sin.
00:25:45.519 --> 00:25:51.119
Any goal can become a sin, even as righteous as it may seem to everybody else.
00:25:51.200 --> 00:25:58.400
There's nothing inherently wrong in becoming a doctor, but it's how you get to becoming a doctor, and it's all the things that you're gonna be doing.
00:25:58.480 --> 00:26:04.319
So there's nothing wrong with it, but it's the values before the goal, and that will lead you to be content.
00:26:04.559 --> 00:26:10.559
I I think that's really well put because especially what I what I think you're you're really drawing to is an authority structure.
00:26:10.720 --> 00:26:19.839
I report to an authority structure, and in the army it's easy because if you don't make your bed, that guy's gonna come and put you in the front leaning rest, and you're not gonna be able to move until you learn your lesson.
00:26:20.079 --> 00:26:28.799
Um, and so the discipline is is it's right in front of your face, you know, it and it's applied from somebody else, that authority structure.
00:26:28.960 --> 00:26:32.000
When you get out of the military, there is no authority structure.
00:26:32.160 --> 00:26:38.400
You know, most you're not likely living with mom and dad, or even if you are, mom and dad probably aren't going in your room and telling you what to do.
00:26:38.640 --> 00:26:45.599
And so I think that's something to where the ability to for us to say that authority structure is God.
00:26:45.680 --> 00:26:55.920
So this is what's going to drive me and what's going to fulfill me, you know, surrendering to that for us, and you know, anybody who abides by that, the more you surrender to that, I promise you, the more contentment you'll feel.
00:26:56.079 --> 00:27:00.160
But if you're not a Christian, one thing that I really love, it's a quote from uh Eric Thomas.
00:27:00.240 --> 00:27:02.480
And it's always just rang in the back of my head.
00:27:02.559 --> 00:27:05.279
It's he says, at the end of every principle is a promise.
00:27:05.519 --> 00:27:13.599
And so if you don't have principles in your life that you're adhering to, you're not guaranteed any fruit at the end of this.
00:27:13.680 --> 00:27:16.480
You're not guaranteed yields for all of your hard effort.
00:27:16.640 --> 00:27:31.359
But if I know I'm gonna make my bed every single day and I know I'm gonna be on time to every single thing I do, and I know I'm gonna have a good attitude, and you have these principles in your life that drive you, even if they're not religious, um, those will guarantee you things in your life.
00:27:31.519 --> 00:27:34.720
If you have just those four things we listed, well, you're pretty employable.
00:27:34.799 --> 00:27:39.359
You're probably going to be able to get a job, and that's a thing that lots of people struggle with these days.
00:27:39.519 --> 00:27:45.200
And so I think if, like you said, you need to pick your values before you pick your goals.
00:27:45.359 --> 00:27:51.839
If I don't know my principles and what drives me, then I'm kind of just a bull in a china shop knocking stuff over.
00:27:51.920 --> 00:28:00.799
And I might get something done that I wanted to accomplish, but it's more, it's more often than not going to cause chaos in my life than I am gonna uh make it better.
00:28:02.640 --> 00:28:03.440
Yeah, yeah, you're heard.
00:28:03.920 --> 00:28:04.400
Awesome.
00:28:04.640 --> 00:28:08.559
So what was the what was the uh the hardest part for you?
00:28:08.799 --> 00:28:29.519
00:28:30.079 --> 00:28:34.640
Uh and so I changed course back uh back into a life of fitness, thankfully.
00:28:34.799 --> 00:28:37.599
Um, but that was a distinct period of my life.
00:28:37.759 --> 00:28:45.440
Did you have a distinct transition where you had to kind of set a fire under your own butt to get back into structure, or was it seamless for you?
00:28:45.680 --> 00:28:52.720
Seamless in the sense of moving from one transition to the next, but having different learning curves.
00:28:53.440 --> 00:29:02.799
So going from military structure where you're um or going from yeah, the military structure to the civilian.
00:29:02.960 --> 00:29:07.200
I understood, well, I I want that this is where God wants me to be.
00:29:07.440 --> 00:29:10.720
Um, so I had to pray about it.
00:29:10.880 --> 00:29:15.039
And so the the seamless transition was more through faith.
00:29:15.200 --> 00:29:31.519
So at first it was about uh going from the military to the civilian and not really understanding what I would have to do, or it was more uh I said, Oh god, uh, I need ten thousand dollars just to go to college.
00:29:31.680 --> 00:29:33.519
Like I just need that money.
00:29:33.599 --> 00:29:53.119
Here's on a piece of paper, and I was praying, and then when I stood up, phone rang, and it was this lady, and she said, We we did this claim in the military, and uh we said no, we're so sorry, we made a mistake, you'll have the money in the next couple of days.
00:29:53.359 --> 00:29:55.359
Um we approved it.
00:29:55.440 --> 00:29:59.279
I don't know what happened, and then all of a sudden it was 10,100.
00:29:59.759 --> 00:30:01.759
Like it was just wow, okay.
00:30:02.000 --> 00:30:05.519
So I had to renew my mind daily.
00:30:05.680 --> 00:30:18.720
That's what was happening, is that every every so often I would get these form of ways that God would show, okay, I I still got you, but you still have to do the work that I called you to do.
00:30:18.960 --> 00:30:22.640
So um, again, my pride was was huge.
00:30:22.799 --> 00:30:44.559
Uh I I wanted to again, you you want to leave the military, but you want to be highly successful financially, and you want everybody to love you, and you want everybody, and then you realize okay, God is placing me at that specific moment, that specific state of mind, and I have to perform certain actions based on that.
00:30:44.960 --> 00:31:00.240
And um, that's when I got to the Epic Decca, and it would it was still difficult, I still, but it was at another level to sell your house so that you can go do a race for two weeks to go to Hawaii, and then two weeks later you come back.
00:31:00.319 --> 00:31:22.000
And I was in a in a storage unit, and I remember being on a on an air mattress, using my jacket as a pillow with all my boxes around, sleeping in a in a place that is smaller than under a uh a desk, and thinking, I'm the epic deck of guy, like I finished this.
00:31:22.160 --> 00:31:24.240
Like, do you know who I am?
00:31:24.400 --> 00:31:34.400
And and it was just and I was thinking, uh, this is how I'm going to inspire others, and um that might be the platform for certain individuals.
00:31:34.640 --> 00:31:44.079
It just wasn't the platform that God could use because it is prideful, and so my pride had to break down, my pride had to go out the window.
00:31:44.319 --> 00:31:46.559
Uh, and so it took me a while.
00:31:46.720 --> 00:31:56.000
It took me a while to really just let go and say, okay, this is and even after I let go, it took some time to really build back up to really like now.
00:31:56.079 --> 00:31:59.519
We're I'm doing fine, I have a house, like I'm doing very fine, right?
00:31:59.680 --> 00:32:04.079
But but it took a while for for your mind to be renewed.
00:32:04.240 --> 00:32:14.960
And so when the Bible in uh Romans 12, 2, it says to renew your mind daily, uh it is a daily task that people have to go through.
00:32:15.119 --> 00:32:18.640
Your situation might shift in some instance.
00:32:18.799 --> 00:32:31.920
For me, it did when I reached college, then all of a sudden I had that 10,100 boom, but I still had to walk through my own desert, so to speak, to use the analogy of the Israelites in the desert.
00:32:32.319 --> 00:32:45.119
I still had to perform certain actions that would yield a certain result, and uh, people want the magic pill that will get them to the other side immediately.
00:32:45.279 --> 00:33:03.119
Uh, because well, Neil had the choice between two pills and he picked one, and because he picked that one, now he has an unlimited amount of knowledge because you can just have a chip in your brain and do whatever you want, and your entire life has changed like this.
00:33:03.279 --> 00:33:12.160
That does not happen, and there's not a story in the like anywhere that's that everything just changes from one day to another.
00:33:12.319 --> 00:33:19.119
All of these movies are showing, and there's a word for it, it's called a montage, right?
00:33:19.200 --> 00:33:25.119
Which is a French word to say your take or in English, uh, the English word would be montage, right?
00:33:25.200 --> 00:33:31.839
Like when you take that in your face, I was thinking, well, he probably didn't get the yeah.
00:33:35.519 --> 00:33:36.640
That's funny, yeah.
00:33:36.880 --> 00:33:56.160
So a montage, right, or in the French way is uh is when you take a bunch of clips and then you're you're just uh putting the workouts of Rocky and not showing that he trained for an entire winter or he trained for an entire year to beat that guy on the ring.
00:33:56.319 --> 00:34:00.160
That would be montage that a lot of people would know.
00:34:00.640 --> 00:34:14.800
And so when you're starting to look at the life, and and you can even look at the Bible that way, you're you're flipping one page and you're going, Yeah, the Israelites were struggling for 400 years, and then you flip the next page, and you're like, Oh wow, there's deliverance right there.
00:34:15.039 --> 00:34:17.920
You're thinking, well, okay, that's that's the very next page.
00:34:18.000 --> 00:34:26.480
So within, so for you within the span of time, you just read 400 years of stories of the Israelites.
00:34:26.639 --> 00:34:28.559
You read the beginning and then you read the end.
00:34:28.719 --> 00:34:33.679
Congratulations! But in your life, it will last every single day.
00:34:33.840 --> 00:34:43.440
And so when I say renew your mind, is uh the Bible, Bible acclaim it, but I I'm saying it right now, is that you have to do it daily.
00:34:43.760 --> 00:34:59.920
Daily, you are to renew your mind on what are your values, so it's not just about being um in a gratitude state, it's contentment is understanding that there are some difficult situations.
00:35:00.079 --> 00:35:06.960
See, I was in a storage unit on an air mattress that I had to fold because otherwise I would not even have a place to write my book.
00:35:07.039 --> 00:35:08.639
That's what I was doing.
00:35:09.519 --> 00:35:18.480
And and and putting my jacket back on so I could go outside because it's cold in Canada, and so uh was I content?
00:35:18.639 --> 00:35:21.679
Well, it was a difficult moment, but I was content, right?
00:35:21.840 --> 00:35:24.880
My pride was saying, no, you're you shouldn't be content.
00:35:25.039 --> 00:35:32.239
But I said, you know what, I am in the position that I am right now, and I will get to that next level when the time comes.
00:35:32.400 --> 00:35:42.800
I will work for that next level, and right now I am working on that next level because we are doing very well as a as a company, we're growing, we're we're expanding.
00:35:43.280 --> 00:35:50.960
I'm I'm enjoying it, but I'm understanding that I have this past, I have understanding that well, right now I'm at that stage.
00:35:51.119 --> 00:35:53.039
I can go lower, I can go higher.
00:35:53.199 --> 00:35:56.320
It's about am I in the right spot at the right?
00:35:56.719 --> 00:36:19.199
00:36:19.360 --> 00:36:34.960
And if you know, when you when you can reset your eyes on the fact that, oh, the suffering was embedded in, I was going to suffer as part of this, you can begin to take it on lack of a better word, take it on the chin or rationalize it better.
00:36:35.199 --> 00:36:45.920
Because when you tell a story, you know, as incredible as yours, where it's like, you know, I'm having these personal battles in my head all the while, you just did one of the most incredible things and you're living in a storage unit.
00:36:46.079 --> 00:36:54.000
And if you can't come to terms with the fact that this was going to be hard, this is going to be a decision you have to make daily.
00:36:54.239 --> 00:37:02.559
Um, and even in the midst of making that decision, your life probably isn't going to get immediately better, but you need to make the decision anyways, daily.
00:37:02.800 --> 00:37:15.840
And I think that's something that gets so lost on people because they think, like you said, it's like something's gonna come from on high, where as soon as I have this one thought or I do this one thing, all of my stresses will just go as far as the east is from the west.
00:37:15.920 --> 00:37:16.960
And that's never happened.
00:37:17.440 --> 00:37:30.480
I I have to renew my I have to I have to dedicate myself to whatever principle, my faith, whatever it is, every single day, or I'm gonna start buying my own lies unless I reset myself on what is actually true.
00:37:30.639 --> 00:37:41.039
Um, and I just to touch on what you said, you know, because I think it's it's it's really interesting that you brought up uh the Exodus where where uh the it where the Israelites were were fleeing Egypt.
00:37:41.360 --> 00:37:44.559
Um, and there was a lot of despair.
00:37:44.800 --> 00:37:55.679
And in the midst of them having freedom, they were starving and hungry and and like this is hard to talk about, but a lot of them wanted to go back to Egypt because that's how much suffering there was.
00:37:55.760 --> 00:38:05.599
That's how hard it is to wake up, bear your cross daily, and do the right thing, to fight for your own freedom, to f to purchase like your ability to do things in this life.
00:38:05.840 --> 00:38:11.840
Um, and I I just think about that often where it's like, imagine they turned around, imagine they turned around.
00:38:12.000 --> 00:38:16.960
You have to you have to stay driven, you have to stay faithful, you have to understand that the suffering is yours.
00:38:17.119 --> 00:38:30.320
There, that there was always going to be a degree of suffering, and I have to make a decision every single day, whether it's within myself or in my meditation or whatever it is, I have to rededicate myself to what matters, or I'm gonna turn back to Egypt.
00:38:31.599 --> 00:38:32.800
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
00:38:32.960 --> 00:38:45.280
So it's about putting a clear path as to where you want to go, where are you right now, understanding the facts by lying to yourself, you are not helping yourself.
00:38:45.440 --> 00:38:58.159
If you are overweight and you want to lose weight, then you have to be understanding this is where I'm at, this is where I want to be, and I'm honest with myself, this is what I want.
00:38:58.400 --> 00:39:03.760
If you are uh to me, I left the military, I had no education.
00:39:04.079 --> 00:39:09.679
The the the okay, yes, saving people's lives is fine.
00:39:09.840 --> 00:39:16.880
Like you're a diver, there's no transferable skills, like skills like from a military okay.
00:39:16.960 --> 00:39:17.440
Yeah, there you go.
00:39:17.519 --> 00:39:19.679
You're right, you're doing basic training, okay?
00:39:19.840 --> 00:39:24.960
And then uh they hand you a gun and then they say, Well, here you can take it apart and then go shoot down the range.
00:39:25.039 --> 00:39:26.079
Okay, is that transferable?
00:39:26.239 --> 00:39:26.960
None in Canada.
00:39:27.039 --> 00:39:27.840
They remove our guns.
00:39:27.920 --> 00:39:28.400
There you go.
00:39:28.559 --> 00:39:30.159
So, what about what's next?
00:39:30.320 --> 00:39:30.880
Well, there you go.
00:39:30.960 --> 00:39:36.719
Uh, here's a gas mask, and uh go into this room and you have to put it under nine seconds.
00:39:36.800 --> 00:39:37.360
Like, what?
00:39:37.599 --> 00:39:38.880
What even a subway?
00:39:39.199 --> 00:40:19.440
00:40:19.599 --> 00:40:23.599
So uh you're transferring from one to to to the next.
00:40:23.760 --> 00:40:30.559
There will be challenges, and um, to me, I I went through every single one of them, right?
00:40:30.719 --> 00:40:36.480
Going from the military to the civilian and not even having any transferable skills.
00:40:36.639 --> 00:40:41.119
So I wanted to go back, and God had no had cut that that barrier.
00:40:41.280 --> 00:40:45.119
I would say that's why God, you know, it's not written in the Bible.
00:40:45.199 --> 00:40:55.519
That's my assumption, is that that's why God made them cross the Red Sea, is because again, uh they can't go back, they understand there there's no going back.
00:40:55.840 --> 00:40:56.559
What are you gonna do?
00:40:56.719 --> 00:40:57.760
Start swimming.
00:40:58.239 --> 00:41:06.639
Oh, there might have been that one guy, that one epic decade guy that's like, Oh yeah, I'm going back to Egypt and maybe sweat that, right?
00:41:07.119 --> 00:41:20.960
But like you, but most people are again not putting it in uh a clear paper and saying, Look, this is where I want to go.
00:41:21.119 --> 00:41:24.960
I have faith that I can achieve that, it's realistic.
00:41:25.119 --> 00:41:27.360
You have to make a goal that is realist.
00:41:27.519 --> 00:41:29.760
That's my goal realistically.
00:41:29.920 --> 00:41:30.800
What can I do?
00:41:30.880 --> 00:41:37.039
That's why people hire coaches, that's why people hire other individuals that have been in these shoes.
00:41:37.199 --> 00:41:42.320
Is that they you look at it and you say, Look, this is my um daily faith.
00:41:42.400 --> 00:41:44.000
I want to achieve this goal.
00:41:44.320 --> 00:41:45.760
Is this achievable?
00:41:45.920 --> 00:41:49.920
And you look at him and you say, No, no, it's not.
00:41:50.079 --> 00:41:57.039
So the worst coaches, the worst coaches out there will look at you and say yes, and then just take your money, and that's it.
00:41:57.199 --> 00:41:58.639
Those are the worst coaches.
00:41:58.800 --> 00:42:10.719
The so the worst thing, and I mean, to me, it was a blessing, a blessing that well, it was a bad family life, so I was rejected, and then I was rejected at school, so bullied.
00:42:10.880 --> 00:42:11.679
It was a blessing.
00:42:11.920 --> 00:42:12.320
Why?
00:42:12.559 --> 00:42:19.360
Well, because I did not attach myself to critic criticism, like that critical side that others have.
00:42:19.599 --> 00:42:22.239
I just understood this is for them.
00:42:22.400 --> 00:42:24.639
So I joined the military, that's it.
00:42:24.880 --> 00:42:25.679
Was it hard?
00:42:25.840 --> 00:42:28.159
Yes, because you're going into the military.
00:42:28.320 --> 00:42:30.639
I did not want to go in the military, like at all.
00:42:30.880 --> 00:42:31.360
At all.
00:42:31.440 --> 00:42:32.800
I was 17 years old.
00:42:32.960 --> 00:42:36.880
I I why why would I want to go in the military?
00:42:37.039 --> 00:42:39.119
But again, this was my my choice.
00:42:39.280 --> 00:42:43.519
I I preferred to go in the military than to go in the street, so that was pretty much it.
00:42:43.760 --> 00:42:50.639
Or get in debt into a degree that I did not even know what I really wanted to do, I did not have any backup plan.
00:42:50.880 --> 00:43:00.480
So I said, okay, military it is, but then moving from the military to the civilian is the same concept, it's constantly improving and improving and moving forward.
00:43:00.639 --> 00:43:08.320
So the advice I would give everyone is to have a clear step, okay, and make it definitive.
00:43:08.480 --> 00:43:19.920
So within the next one year or two years, I will achieve X goal, I will have faith that this is what I want to achieve, and then you read it daily.
00:43:20.159 --> 00:43:27.760
If you read that, we're not just talking about some weird affirmation of think positive, everything's gonna be positive in your life.
00:43:27.920 --> 00:43:30.559
I don't believe in this, I don't at all.
00:43:30.719 --> 00:43:31.039
Why?
00:43:31.199 --> 00:43:37.920
Because if I think I'm going to lose weight and I think I'm gonna lose weight, no, if I don't do any action, I'm not gonna lose weight.
00:43:38.079 --> 00:43:39.840
Like that's that's that's the end goal.
00:43:40.000 --> 00:43:42.559
You have to perform certain action in between.
00:43:42.800 --> 00:43:47.679
Understand there's the mindset between it, but you have to make it clear to your mind.
00:43:47.840 --> 00:43:48.880
You have to make it clear.
00:43:49.039 --> 00:43:50.000
So, how do you do that?
00:43:50.239 --> 00:43:58.480
Clear, definitive goal within a time frame so that your brain understands oh, oh, I don't have five years or 10 years to achieve that goal.
00:43:58.639 --> 00:43:59.519
I know that within that.
00:44:00.159 --> 00:44:01.679
Yeah, I have to achieve it.
00:44:01.760 --> 00:44:12.400
And because your brain is built, like your entire body, by the way, is designed for survival, then you are designed to get that hunger, which you mentioned, that purpose.
00:44:12.559 --> 00:44:13.920
That purpose comes.
00:44:14.079 --> 00:44:25.920
Uh purpose is the byproduct, essentially, because you're you're essentially using uh your you're you're picking your goal, which you already pick your value, by the way.
00:44:26.000 --> 00:44:31.599
You pick your goal, you enumerate it, you say, okay, I'm going to finish it within a set time frame.
00:44:31.840 --> 00:44:44.159
And then by trying to achieve it because of survival, then you end up finding that purpose that you were built for, because your brain is designed to achieve that.
00:44:44.559 --> 00:44:45.760
Like you have to survive.
00:44:45.840 --> 00:44:46.800
So you're going to achieve that.
00:44:47.679 --> 00:44:49.119
You're wired to survive.
00:44:49.280 --> 00:44:53.039
And the the other thing that I always try to remind people is you're wired to adapt.
00:44:53.119 --> 00:45:01.760
You're supposed to be able to take variables, you're supposed to be able to incur the circumstances that life is throwing at you and be like, maybe I can't do an hour and a half workout.
00:45:01.840 --> 00:45:03.599
Is 45 minutes actually okay?
00:45:03.760 --> 00:45:04.239
Yes.
00:45:04.480 --> 00:45:08.800
So many people end up throwing the baby out with the bathwater on so many things.
00:45:09.039 --> 00:45:18.800
Um, and you know, where you're where you're my one of my favorite things where you're saying is you know, the importance of of being real with yourself and setting that goal.
00:45:19.039 --> 00:45:28.400
Because if I set some kind of crazy goal that I can't hit and then I'm demoralized and quit because I'm not gonna hit my goal, um, I only have so much time on the turf.
00:45:28.800 --> 00:45:33.760
And and you know, you said you said think about uh these where I'm going, think about the goal.
00:45:33.920 --> 00:45:36.480
Another thing is too, if that's not working, think about the consequence.
00:45:37.039 --> 00:45:39.360
Everybody pays the piper eventually.
00:45:39.519 --> 00:45:46.480
And if I continue to furlough my payments, eventually the piper's gonna come and knock on my door and he's gonna say, Where's my money?
00:45:46.880 --> 00:46:07.440
00:46:07.599 --> 00:46:14.880
But if you did nothing and you continually put yourself in this cycle of 20 years of saying it's gonna be different, it's gonna be different, it's gonna be different.
00:46:15.039 --> 00:46:17.840
Well, the only thing that needs to be different is the decision making.
00:46:18.000 --> 00:46:23.679
Because if you don't change the decision making, start making payments to the piper, eventually it's you're gonna be in a position where you can't.
00:46:23.920 --> 00:46:40.400
And whether it's you're dealing with the issues of aging or you know, uh some people, you know, whether it's I'm 55 and I never cared, cared about my health, and now I'm overweight and I can't use half of my muscles, and now my organs are failing, and now I don't feel like I can actually do anything about it.
00:46:40.559 --> 00:46:42.320
That is my friends is the piper.
00:46:43.360 --> 00:46:50.559
And and you know, so if you're not positively motivated where it's like I want to do great things with my life, some of us just want to live.
00:46:50.719 --> 00:46:58.000
Some of us just ex and like you know, exactly what you're preaching, JD, which is like this contentness, like to be okay with just existing in my life.
00:46:58.159 --> 00:47:01.760
Well, if you're not doing the things you're supposed to do, that that will get taken.
00:47:01.840 --> 00:47:13.280
And I think that's an important thing for people to remember, especially as you know, I I'm sure there's I'm sure if you did the statistics, I can't imagine the health outcomes for for young men and ladies coming out of the military is great.
00:47:13.360 --> 00:47:21.119
I can't uh with all the nicotine that that gets pushed on them, with all the energy drinks that gets pushed on them, with all the bad dietary habits that gets pushed on them.
00:47:21.280 --> 00:47:34.320
I have so many friends who got out and I love them, and I and I but they have to be real with themselves and they have to put that fire under their own butts and say, Hey, I worked so hard for five years, but I've kind of stagnated for the last 20.
00:47:34.400 --> 00:47:38.239
And if I don't start doing something now, uh my I I can kiss the life goodbye.
00:47:38.320 --> 00:47:42.800
And I I think we should all be on board of convincing our friends and peers not to do that.
00:47:44.000 --> 00:47:46.159
Yeah, that's what love is, right?
00:47:46.480 --> 00:47:47.280
Yeah, yeah.
00:47:47.440 --> 00:47:56.559
So yeah, you should get your coach or someone uh in your circle that challenges you and loves you enough to tell you, yes, you're in the wrong direction here.
00:47:57.760 --> 00:48:04.719
Yeah, and I know I've lost a lot of friends as a result of telling them that what they were doing was wrong.
00:48:04.880 --> 00:48:12.719
I totally understand, but I prefer to live this life but not be responsible for being a part of their decay.
00:48:13.280 --> 00:48:20.880
And you don't have to be a you know, one one big thing that I think of too is you know, when you these people are in a decay, are you assuming that I've never been in a state of decay?
00:48:20.960 --> 00:48:25.840
Like that's what these people are acting like you're saying when you're trying to stuff like, hey, I I have decayed before.
00:48:26.320 --> 00:48:32.079
Like I'm trying to help you not do what I did, and and it just they never they never seem to see it.
00:48:32.159 --> 00:48:33.760
I think it comes from a place of shame.
00:48:33.840 --> 00:48:35.840
There is no reason to be ashamed, you know.
00:48:35.920 --> 00:48:38.800
We, you know, especially from our outlook, we're told to come as we are.
00:48:39.039 --> 00:48:40.639
We will be changed through the process.
00:48:40.800 --> 00:48:44.000
And if you continually come, you will be rewarded if you seek it out.
00:48:44.159 --> 00:48:52.320
And so, you know, if you whether you know your shame is coming from, oh, I'm overweight and I don't think I can do it, or I've never worked out, I don't think I could do the epic defka.
00:48:52.480 --> 00:48:53.760
Did I pronounce it right?
00:48:54.960 --> 00:48:55.599
Perfect.
00:48:55.760 --> 00:48:57.360
Uh, I don't think I could do that.
00:48:57.440 --> 00:49:00.800
And you know, honestly, honest to God, JD, you're incredible.
00:49:00.880 --> 00:49:04.880
A lot of people probably can't, because it takes a lifetime of work.
00:49:05.039 --> 00:49:17.519
And if you do not start where JD started, where this is where I'm saying these winds we have windows in our lives, and the window will eclipse, and you will wake up at 40, you'll wake up at 50, you'll wake up at 60.
00:49:17.679 --> 00:49:19.679
I'll say, Man, I wish I had some principles.
00:49:19.920 --> 00:49:26.800
Man, I wish I listened when they said you need to have your values first, because otherwise you're gonna wither away and and be just like everybody else.
00:49:26.960 --> 00:49:33.679
And I, you know, I don't think there's anything wrong with being everybody else, but I think most of those people are too ashamed to admit they need help.
00:49:33.840 --> 00:49:35.440
And and they could be great.
00:49:35.519 --> 00:49:40.639
And I and I think, yeah, that that's just one thing I wanted to mention because we because we mentioned a lot a lot of flaws today.
00:49:40.719 --> 00:49:42.239
And it's like you don't have to be ashamed of them.
00:49:42.320 --> 00:49:47.920
You know, we all have flaws, I have flaws, I have things that I struggled with that threw me off, especially getting out of the military.
00:49:48.000 --> 00:49:49.599
You know, we talked about overeating.
00:49:49.760 --> 00:49:58.159
Um, it's really easy to get swallowed up by these things, but if you're not honest and real about addressing them, then then uh you're gonna have a hard time.
00:49:58.400 --> 00:50:00.320
Yeah, so I'm glad that we disagree on that.
00:50:00.400 --> 00:50:01.599
Uh that's good.
00:50:01.760 --> 00:50:02.000
Yeah.
00:50:02.159 --> 00:50:04.159
Yeah, yeah, we disagree on that for sure.
00:50:04.239 --> 00:50:08.159
Because I think there needs to be some uh level of shame.
00:50:08.320 --> 00:50:14.480
Uh about like I I am ashamed of certain behaviors that I did when I was in the military.
00:50:14.639 --> 00:50:21.679
Uh, the level of caffeine that I ingested, uh, that was ridiculous.
00:50:22.079 --> 00:50:22.639
Ridiculous.
00:50:22.719 --> 00:50:29.679
You go on watch and then you take in an excessive amount of coffee, or um, and I'm ashamed of it, right?
00:50:29.760 --> 00:50:42.159
But it's understanding that well, I'm I'm I have so much shame that I I I'm sharing it with people on a podcast, I'm open about it, and I don't want to go back to that that stage, right?
00:50:42.480 --> 00:50:57.039
And I think that by adding a certain level of shame, understanding I'm not I'm content where I am, but I'm not going to be satisfied, is where people should be.
00:50:57.119 --> 00:51:03.679
Anyway, and and again, it's it's in my views because again, I am ashamed that I finish fifth.
00:51:03.840 --> 00:51:04.159
Why?
00:51:04.400 --> 00:51:23.280
Because I am I I know, and I I said it earlier, I know that I pushed business and other aspects of my life, which are important as well, but I know that I did not do my workouts completely at 100%.
00:51:24.480 --> 00:51:31.679
And because I did not do it at 100%, say I think the the fourth was a minute or two in front of me.
00:51:32.000 --> 00:51:41.360
Because of all of these workouts that I was cheap with, I could have really pushed that extra two minutes.
00:51:41.920 --> 00:51:46.880
I understand that the first one was I think half an hour in front of me.
00:51:47.039 --> 00:51:49.760
So I understand that I would have not been first.
00:51:49.920 --> 00:51:52.400
Okay, so at least there's that okay.
00:51:52.639 --> 00:51:58.480
Whether I finish that cycling or that the product, oh, I pushed a little bit more today.
00:51:58.559 --> 00:52:00.079
Oh, definitely I'm gonna finish first.
00:52:00.159 --> 00:52:03.119
And I'm gonna knock off half an hour on my on my half marathon.
00:52:03.199 --> 00:52:03.840
Yeah, okay.
00:52:04.559 --> 00:52:06.960
I I I understand that concept, right?
00:52:07.039 --> 00:52:19.360
Like I I but at least I understand that I would have been probably fourth, if not third, and at that third level, then at least I would have been the because the the third and fourth were in front of me.
00:52:19.519 --> 00:52:20.960
I could have pushed harder.
00:52:21.119 --> 00:52:26.480
Now I gave my all in the race, but it's all of these workouts leading up to it.
00:52:26.639 --> 00:52:27.760
I know I messed up.
00:52:27.840 --> 00:52:33.920
So there's that that understanding that I am such ashamed that I want to change myself.
00:52:34.159 --> 00:52:36.719
So um, same concept for Christianity.
00:52:36.960 --> 00:52:39.679
I am such ashamed of my sin.
00:52:39.920 --> 00:52:44.559
I am dirty that I want to repent and follow that authority.
00:52:44.719 --> 00:52:46.639
So there needs to be that level of shame.
00:52:46.800 --> 00:53:10.639
00:53:10.800 --> 00:53:15.760
Their business was not uh growing because uh they were they were ashamed.
00:53:15.920 --> 00:53:28.960
So we need to to uh again have that level of shame, but use it in a way that has uh an action being driven out of that shame.
00:53:29.519 --> 00:53:37.440
So um the way I can explain it is there is um negative to negative, negative to positive, and then negative to constructive.
00:53:37.599 --> 00:53:40.320
So something negative somewhere happened in your life.
00:53:40.480 --> 00:53:40.880
That's it.
00:53:41.039 --> 00:53:41.360
Okay.
00:53:41.679 --> 00:54:02.000
Uh for me, uh, one of my best friend at Special Forces, we uh we served uh uh together uh multiple uh places and and love the guy very much, but he passed away and he took his life and he said, Okay, well, there you go.
00:54:02.079 --> 00:54:04.239
I'm throwing it away, right?
00:54:04.320 --> 00:54:11.280
So he died, left his kids, his wife, and um like now I went to the funeral.
00:54:11.440 --> 00:54:12.480
Show up at the funeral.
00:54:12.559 --> 00:54:14.800
Now that's something highly negative, okay.
00:54:14.880 --> 00:54:20.400
And you can use anything that is negative in your life that happened for me, it was coffee or something like that, right?
00:54:20.480 --> 00:54:21.840
Like you can pick any anything.
00:54:21.920 --> 00:54:23.519
So I'm using this example.
00:54:23.679 --> 00:54:27.119
So uh he uh analyzed himself.
00:54:27.280 --> 00:54:28.079
That's negative.
00:54:28.239 --> 00:54:33.280
Now I could have used it and said, okay, negative to negative, so I start drinking, right?
00:54:33.360 --> 00:54:35.599
That's that's that's a negative to a negative.
00:54:35.760 --> 00:54:44.239
It's still solving the situation in some capacity because yes, I am not thinking about it, but I'm numbing it, okay.
00:54:44.400 --> 00:54:47.519
Uh which which is a form, right?
00:54:47.679 --> 00:55:03.280
Then I can use it in terms of uh negative to positive, which a lot of people are doing, where I say he died, but uh here's all the great things, here's all the and I'm switching everything, but changing a negative to a negative is uh just amplifying the situation.
00:55:03.440 --> 00:55:11.280
Negative to positive is changing, uh it takes a lot of energy because energy can be created, can just be transferred.
00:55:11.360 --> 00:55:19.199
And so by transferring it, there is some loss somewhere, and uh so now you're going from negative to positive.
00:55:19.360 --> 00:55:25.280
Now, again, for him, uh for for me, it was negative to constructive.
00:55:25.440 --> 00:55:31.599
And so what I did was um we I went to an event, I was at the funeral, and then there was an event.
00:55:31.760 --> 00:55:38.880
He was known around the world for being one of uh uh the only male that swam that straight twice.
00:55:39.039 --> 00:55:54.000
Uh it was like a 17 kilometer, so what is that, like 11 miles of swimming and tides and shit, like tide shift, uh current shifts, sharks, cold water, and so I took a crew, took a team, and then I swam that straight.
00:55:54.159 --> 00:55:58.559
Now just once, but not like you know, he he he's the only one that swam it twice.
00:55:58.719 --> 00:56:02.000
So we raised$65,000 for chronic illness kids to go to someone.
00:56:02.320 --> 00:56:19.119
Not to put back the spotlight on JD, but more on okay, this is how I use a highly negative and like event that I don't think would trigger anyone to go into something that is constructive, right?
00:56:19.280 --> 00:56:27.840
And so for him, what happened is that um the the reason why he went downward spiral is because there was no shame.
00:56:28.000 --> 00:56:40.960
For him, he was accepted in that uh in that environment that again he created, he definitely created it, and his wife knows it, uh, everybody knows he created that.
00:56:41.039 --> 00:57:02.559
That now, again, that might have been from the it is uh definitely from the military mindset and the right, he developed some things, some mindset in the military, and when he transferred from the military to the civilian, but because of the lack of shame and and uh he again analyzes himself.
00:57:02.719 --> 00:57:05.519
So the way that we can do it is okay, you know what?
00:57:05.679 --> 00:57:08.480
I am not in the state that I want to be in.
00:57:08.639 --> 00:57:12.880
I am not in the like I want to be an uh an engineer.
00:57:13.039 --> 00:57:13.519
That's it.
00:57:13.679 --> 00:57:17.199
Well, to become an engineer, you need to have a certain level of schooling.
00:57:17.360 --> 00:57:17.760
There you go.
00:57:17.840 --> 00:57:18.559
Is it difficult?
00:57:18.639 --> 00:57:18.880
Yes.
00:57:19.039 --> 00:57:19.840
Will it last long?
00:57:19.920 --> 00:57:20.159
Yes.
00:57:20.239 --> 00:57:22.639
I put on a piece of paper, this is what I want to do.
00:57:22.800 --> 00:57:24.079
I'm not at that level.
00:57:24.159 --> 00:57:26.719
Now, is it shameful that I am not at that level?
00:57:26.880 --> 00:57:28.719
I could have started a long time ago.
00:57:28.880 --> 00:57:30.639
I could have started when I was 17 years old.
00:57:30.719 --> 00:57:35.519
And if I look back, I'm thinking, uh, I wish I would have started a long time ago.
00:57:35.760 --> 00:57:37.039
I wish I started.
00:57:37.280 --> 00:57:39.840
Well, that's still a certain level of shame.
00:57:40.000 --> 00:58:01.199
00:58:01.360 --> 00:58:04.159
However, here's what I'm gonna do from now on.
00:58:04.320 --> 00:58:24.880
I am not going to do and partake in this type of behavior, and then I'm gonna use it in a way that is constructive, so not negative to negative, that's the easy route, and it will yield some negative results, and then not negative to positive because that's very difficult, and you're still numbing regardless.
00:58:25.039 --> 00:58:34.400
You're still numbing from negative to constructive, you're numbing it in a way where you're gradually pushing a positive outcome and using that.
00:58:34.559 --> 00:58:36.400
You can use it in a breakup as well.
00:58:36.559 --> 00:58:39.440
I've used it in breakups, I've used that mindset as well.
00:58:39.519 --> 00:58:39.760
You know what?
00:58:39.840 --> 00:58:40.880
I'm going through a breakup.
00:58:40.960 --> 00:58:46.480
What can I do to channel that energy and use it as a catalyst?
00:58:46.639 --> 00:58:52.159
And you see this nowadays with a lot of uh kids, uh, mainly many guys.
00:58:52.239 --> 00:58:57.199
Uh the guys go through a breakup and then they say, Oh, I'm gonna get real thick.
00:58:58.960 --> 00:59:04.719
Well, that is a form of way of saying I am ashamed of what I did.
00:59:05.119 --> 00:59:19.519
I had a relationship with that individual that did not align with my values in the first place, which you should have just listened to uh David's podcast, and then you wouldn't have made that mistake, but okay, we won't harp on it.
00:59:21.039 --> 00:59:31.119
That's awesome, and then you get your values, and and you you were ashamed of of that behavior, and now you have a choice.
00:59:31.199 --> 00:59:38.159
You can say, Oh, I miss her so much, I'm just gonna go back home and start drinking my life away.
00:59:38.239 --> 00:59:45.119
And there are these guys that are drinking their life away, and I'm saying, Okay, well, aqua can be any other type of numbing, right?
00:59:45.199 --> 00:59:53.440
Some guys they just go into uh into work, they just go, go, go, go, go into work, and then you just forget about reality and growing.
00:59:53.599 --> 01:00:05.360
Now, there's nothing wrong with going to work, or there's nothing wrong with having a glass of wine or drinking alcohol, there's nothing wrong, it's the excess of it and why you're doing it.
01:00:05.519 --> 01:00:11.119
That is the the wrong part, the lack of self-control that ensues with it.
01:00:11.360 --> 01:00:22.320
But there is that shameful part that yields a constructive, which then that guy goes to the gym and starts humping iron and then understands, whoa, I feel great with it.
01:00:22.559 --> 01:00:23.760
Wow, what did I do?
01:00:24.000 --> 01:00:25.760
Well, here's the the recipe.
01:00:26.079 --> 01:00:33.199
What you did was you transferred something negative, which you're ashamed of, and then you transferred it to something constructive.
01:00:33.360 --> 01:00:41.920
So having a certain level of shame that yield a result, okay, not in terms of uh shame towards negative.
01:00:42.079 --> 01:00:56.000
The reason why we are saying shame or shaming others is wrong, is because oftentimes what happened is that we are shaming people or shaming ourselves, and it yields that negative result.
01:00:56.800 --> 01:01:00.400
So you shame someone and then they go and start, right?
01:01:00.800 --> 01:01:01.360
You're fat.
01:01:01.760 --> 01:01:05.039
Okay, and then they start going and binging, right?
01:01:05.920 --> 01:01:09.360
So that's why there's this negative connotation.
01:01:10.159 --> 01:01:20.639
If you shift that mindset and you say, Okay, I am and and when I say I'm fat, for me right now, as an ultra triathlete, I am overweight.
01:01:20.800 --> 01:01:22.400
I understand that I'm overweight.
01:01:22.559 --> 01:01:24.480
That's because that is my standard.
01:01:24.639 --> 01:01:24.960
Why?
01:01:25.039 --> 01:01:34.000
Because my standard as an ultra triathlete is you have to lose as much weight as possible while still being functional and so different levels.
01:01:34.159 --> 01:01:40.559
Well, if I consider myself right now as it is, as bigger or fat, okay, that is me.
01:01:40.719 --> 01:01:41.760
That is me now.
01:01:41.920 --> 01:01:45.039
What will I do with that level of information?
01:01:45.280 --> 01:01:47.440
Will I use it in a constructive pattern?
01:01:47.599 --> 01:01:48.000
Yes.
01:01:48.159 --> 01:01:48.559
Why?
01:01:48.719 --> 01:01:54.960
One, I'm using it on a podcast to say I am at the moment right now ashamed of my body.
01:01:55.119 --> 01:01:58.639
But what will I do to yield a constructive result?
01:01:58.800 --> 01:02:09.360
Not a positive result to say, well, my my body is fat according to my standard as JD, but I have nice hair, or right, which is positive.
01:02:15.039 --> 01:02:15.599
Exactly.
01:02:15.840 --> 01:02:20.079
So, or changing from a negative to a negative, saying, Well, you know what?
01:02:20.239 --> 01:02:28.559
There's nothing I can change, or I've tried everything, or all sorts of excuses again to yell the negative to a negative.
01:02:28.719 --> 01:02:32.559
I can say, Here, I'm going on a podcast, I'm ashamed of my body right now.
01:02:32.719 --> 01:02:38.559
I will train, I will be better because I want to be at that level in my life.
01:02:38.719 --> 01:02:40.079
That's where I want to go.
01:02:40.159 --> 01:02:40.559
Why?
01:02:40.719 --> 01:02:48.960
Because when I look at my piece of paper, that's the type of body I want, that's the type of mindset that I want, that's the type, that's the goal that I want.
01:02:49.119 --> 01:02:53.119
And based on my value as a Christian, well, here it is.
01:02:53.199 --> 01:02:54.960
I'm the temple of the Holy Spirit.
01:02:55.119 --> 01:03:02.000
I don't want the Holy Spirit to come into that type of temple where I'm undisciplined and on the lack of self-control.
01:03:02.320 --> 01:03:03.280
I don't want that.
01:03:03.440 --> 01:03:08.800
So, therefore, based on my standard, then that's where I'm gonna head, right?
01:03:08.880 --> 01:03:11.519
So that's where we would differ based on shame.
01:03:11.679 --> 01:03:15.199
Again, different types of ways of looking at it, but yeah.
01:03:15.599 --> 01:03:24.960
And I think that's why it's super important that we hash out the conversation because in the middle of it is a great uh lack of a better word, construct in dealing with the shame.
01:03:25.039 --> 01:03:35.360
So where I say, Hey, uh, because where I fear is that people paralyze themselves more than they move forward because people don't have the ability to practice what you just said.
01:03:35.679 --> 01:03:42.719
Um when they do, because this construct is here and it's never wrong.
01:03:42.880 --> 01:03:55.119
If you can take your negative and you can turn it into a construct where you say, I'm going to slowly work it into something that's in my favor, and I'm gonna be disciplined and diligent and do everything I need to do, that will always yield fruit for you.
01:03:55.360 --> 01:04:04.239
Um, and so I think that's why it's really important to have the conversation because where my brain would have said is you know, make sure you're being nice to yourself, make sure you're not shaming yourself.
01:04:04.400 --> 01:04:06.639
Um, so that way you're not paralyzing yourself.
01:04:06.800 --> 01:04:15.920
But even better than that, if you can have a hard conversation with yourself where you say, I'm not gonna lie to myself and say I don't feel the shame, and I'm gonna address it.
01:04:16.079 --> 01:04:17.280
Well, how do I address it best?
01:04:17.360 --> 01:04:18.639
Well, now you have the format.
01:04:18.800 --> 01:04:26.400
I take this negative, this thing that I hate or resent or that is ailing me, and I slowly uh bend it into my favor.
01:04:26.559 --> 01:04:36.480
I think that's uh that's like the Marcus Aurelius quote where he says, uh, the meaning of life is taking uh taking the the hand that life deals you and playing it as if it as if it were your own.
01:04:36.719 --> 01:04:44.000
And uh you know, sometimes it's not gonna crack out the way you want it to, and you have to you have to change it.
01:04:44.159 --> 01:04:46.480
You know, it it's it's up to your mentality.
01:04:46.719 --> 01:04:48.480
But awesome, awesome.
01:04:48.639 --> 01:04:56.639
Well, then I think the the next place that we'll go then is what have you drawn from your military career?
01:04:56.880 --> 01:04:59.360
So reorient it back to our prompt.
01:05:00.320 --> 01:05:04.239
Uh so from your military career, um, what were the things?
01:05:04.320 --> 01:05:10.800
Because you said you were 17, you came there, you you felt like you were gonna seek discipline and that discipline was going to happen to you.
01:05:10.960 --> 01:05:14.400
Uh, and then you got there and half the people were disciplined, half the people weren't.
01:05:14.639 --> 01:05:16.960
Um, what were the things that they taught you?
01:05:17.119 --> 01:05:22.559
Because I find that I have certain things in my life where it's like if I did not learn that in the army, I'd be screwed.
01:05:23.519 --> 01:05:27.679
I'd have no luck uh in terms of generating that discipline on my own.
01:05:27.920 --> 01:05:30.320
For example, I work out almost every single day.
01:05:30.480 --> 01:05:30.719
Why?
01:05:31.039 --> 01:05:32.719
Because I did in the army because it's important.
01:05:32.800 --> 01:05:34.239
Because if you don't, you're not war ready.
01:05:34.320 --> 01:05:38.159
And then my brain, you know, you don't age well, you don't age gracefully.
01:05:38.400 --> 01:05:50.960
Um but what is there anything from your military career that has shined through and has helped you um in terms of your discipline, or have you totally started from scratch?
01:05:51.199 --> 01:05:54.559
Well, you yeah, you never start totally from scratch for sure.
01:05:54.800 --> 01:05:59.440
Um yeah, it's it's definitely the structure.
01:05:59.920 --> 01:06:11.360
So if you have a structure and systems in place and also the mission, which I talked about earlier, so you have that mission, right?
01:06:11.519 --> 01:06:16.880
For for the military, it's a mission for the civilian, it's just a goal, right?
01:06:17.280 --> 01:06:24.800
You're going to do another race for them or for the civilian, it's uh just another race.
01:06:24.960 --> 01:06:45.760
But for me, I'm looking at it as okay, if I don't finish this race, if I don't prepare well, if I this is a battle plan, like I mean I make sure that this mission is complete, and so uh there's the mission aspect, and then there is the uh structure and the systems in place.
01:06:45.920 --> 01:06:48.159
You need to set standards for yourself.
01:06:48.239 --> 01:06:54.239
This this structure needs to be in place in order to acquire a certain level of discipline.
01:06:54.480 --> 01:06:54.960
Awesome.
01:06:55.119 --> 01:06:56.960
I I wholeheartedly agree.
01:06:57.119 --> 01:06:59.840
Um, I think the thing that I agree with most is the mission.
01:06:59.920 --> 01:07:01.679
You know, for me, I'm mission-oriented.
01:07:01.760 --> 01:07:04.719
You know, when I lose my mission, I become a derelict.
01:07:04.880 --> 01:07:05.519
It is not good.
01:07:05.599 --> 01:07:07.519
That's why it's so important I meditate every day.
01:07:07.679 --> 01:07:09.840
Because if I don't, then I lose sight of things.
01:07:09.920 --> 01:07:14.639
Um, yeah, JD, it is important to set a goal, it is important to aspire.
01:07:14.880 --> 01:07:15.840
Where are you going?
01:07:16.000 --> 01:07:16.960
Where is your next goal?
01:07:17.119 --> 01:07:18.239
What are you striving for?
01:07:18.400 --> 01:07:19.840
Do you have anything on your horizon?
01:07:20.079 --> 01:07:29.599
For me, yeah, we're growing the company right now, and uh we are also expanding our philanthropic ways, so that's where we're heading right now.
01:07:29.760 --> 01:07:42.159
Uh, in terms of race, I don't uh I just finished the Trail Half Marathon World Championship, but otherwise, uh, I try to give back to the communities and uh help out as much as possible.
01:07:42.400 --> 01:07:44.960
And uh yeah, that's that's what I am doing right now.
01:07:45.199 --> 01:07:45.679
Gotcha.
01:07:45.840 --> 01:07:46.400
Perfect.
01:07:46.559 --> 01:07:50.000
Well, JD, I love this conversation.
01:07:50.320 --> 01:07:52.960
I don't have anything left to ask you.
01:07:53.039 --> 01:08:02.079
I think we covered a lot of corners, and instead of putting us both through this awkward thing where we try to extend it for the nine minutes we have, we might as well just call it a good product.
01:08:02.320 --> 01:08:04.800
Uh, but did you have anything you wanted to say?
01:08:04.960 --> 01:08:07.920
Any questions you wanted to ask, anything you wanted to mention?
01:08:08.159 --> 01:08:09.360
Um, please feel free.
01:08:09.440 --> 01:08:10.719
I I want to make sure you have time to.
01:08:11.039 --> 01:08:22.000
Well, the only part that I would uh say is be serious what you want in life, to be very direct with what you want and ones and to add your values.
01:08:22.159 --> 01:08:25.119
Uh definitely be serious about your values, right?
01:08:25.199 --> 01:08:28.079
If you are a Christian, be serious about Christianity.
01:08:28.159 --> 01:08:28.640
Yeah, right.
01:08:28.880 --> 01:08:33.680
Even God says I don't like a He hates a lukewarm Christian, right?
01:08:33.840 --> 01:08:36.640
So uh you are to be serious about everything.
01:08:37.680 --> 01:08:41.439
Yeah, if you want to work out, be serious about your workout.
01:08:41.840 --> 01:08:46.000
This is this is life as a as a whole, so be serious about it.
01:08:47.119 --> 01:08:48.960
Beautiful, beautiful, yeah.
01:08:49.199 --> 01:08:50.560
I I completely agree.
01:08:50.720 --> 01:08:56.720
Be serious about it, have your mission, have your structures in place when you're dealing with shame.
01:08:56.880 --> 01:09:00.319
Don't paralyze yourself, turn that negative into a construct.
01:09:00.479 --> 01:09:02.479
This has been a great conversation, JD.
01:09:02.720 --> 01:09:09.439
Um, I will make sure that all of your links and bios and your website and everything will be properly attached.
01:09:09.600 --> 01:09:13.600
Um, but yeah, it'll be attached down below if you're watching on YouTube.
01:09:14.000 --> 01:09:16.880
And yeah, I hope you guys have a fantastic rest of your day.
01:09:16.960 --> 01:09:18.239
And uh yeah, we'll see you soon.
