درباره این اپیزود
Canceling surgery the day before it happens is a gut-punch, but sometimes it is the most responsible medical choice you can make. We sit down for a candid life update on why the plan changes, how a past ICU crisis still shapes every decision, and why “where” a surgery happens can matter as much as “who” performs it when you live with cerebral palsy.
We talk about getting our paperwork together, including a living will and revisiting DNR decisions, then we get into the real reason the brakes get hit: a system that struggled to place a critical patient in the ICU and the memory loss that comes with intubation and a medically induced coma. That experience rewires your definition of safe. If a surgery center cannot handle an emergency, we are not rolling the dice, especially with a history of fast complications.
From there, we break down what is happening with the knee: a kneecap that pops in and out, unstable hardware, reduced bend, and the push to find the right fix. We explore options like partial knee replacement, MPFL reconstruction, and groove surgery for patellar tracking, plus how cerebral palsy, smaller bone structure, and aging joints complicate standard orthopedic advice. We also address anesthesia risk, including a propofol allergy, and why we are determined to advocate loudly until we land on a plan that protects mobility and long-term health.
If you have ever had to fight for the safer option, you will feel this one. Subscribe for updates, share this with someone navigating complex care, and leave a review with the one question you wish every surgeon would answer up front.

00:00:00.560 --> 00:00:03.040
Welcome to Ask Win everyone.
00:00:03.279 --> 00:00:23.280
Um today is a life update because for those of you that don't know um that don't follow me on Facebook, I have canceled my surgery.
00:00:23.600 --> 00:00:27.679
No, the patient well let me take that back.
00:00:28.640 --> 00:00:37.119
The patient didn't get cold feet because of the surgery itself.
00:00:38.240 --> 00:00:44.640
The patient got called feet because of CP.
00:00:45.920 --> 00:00:57.920
So basically what happened is I met with my medical fiduciaries, and I have all that paperwork written out.
00:00:58.000 --> 00:01:01.920
I have a living will, I have all that stuff.
00:01:02.159 --> 00:01:20.159
Yes, finally, years went by when I was saying after my dad died to get your stuff together, especially when you have a disabled child, and yet I didn't have my stuff together.
00:01:20.400 --> 00:01:22.000
So now I do.
00:01:22.879 --> 00:01:38.000
And so they were going over it with um me because at the time I revoked I verbally revokes my DNA, do not resuscitate.
00:01:39.200 --> 00:02:08.159
And so they were going over the paperwork with me right before my surgery, which was supposed to be October 22nd, and then I told them what was going on, and I knew what was going on, and basically my doctor works out of one hospital.
00:02:09.039 --> 00:02:16.479
My former doctor works out of one hospital, which is a surgery center.
00:02:16.719 --> 00:02:27.759
That's all fine and dandy when you don't have CP that could do a sideways, dance into the ICU as quick as I did in January.
00:02:29.280 --> 00:02:40.639
And so fast forward to the day, October 14th, I was supposed to have surgery tomorrow, actually.
00:02:41.360 --> 00:02:58.159
Fast forward to the day, I um almost got in a fight with my Botox doctor because of reasons my kneecap is popping in and out of place.
00:02:59.280 --> 00:03:01.280
It's very unstable.
00:03:01.840 --> 00:03:15.280
I have hardware that's no longer working, and it wasn't the type of hardware that was supposed to come out, but it no.
00:03:15.840 --> 00:03:21.520
And then she wants me to go back to Emma to my original doctor.
00:03:21.680 --> 00:03:56.879
I said I don't think so, because I need a hospital with ICU just in case CP does a sideways dance and dances itself into the ICU because if um you guys remember correctly, in January where I opened this year, I did a sideways dance um into the ICU in Mesa, Arizona, and I had my surgery in Phoenix.
00:03:57.360 --> 00:04:03.280
So for those of you that know Arizona, know Mesa, this is Phoenix.
00:04:03.919 --> 00:04:11.759
And what I didn't tell you is that they were people were so thankful that I was in the ICU.
00:04:12.960 --> 00:04:43.920
Is what I didn't tell you is those dumb, dumb doctors at also at Amazon Especially Hospital, where my former doctor has rights, could not find ICU, let alone wait it with a patient who was critical condition at this point, waited to send me to the ICU.
00:04:44.560 --> 00:04:55.920
And my medical liaison, God God bless her, Melissa Johnson of senior care management, huge shout out to her.
00:04:56.879 --> 00:05:01.360
Um said, We basically don't care.
00:05:02.079 --> 00:05:03.680
Will you send win?
00:05:04.800 --> 00:05:06.160
Just send it now.
00:05:06.639 --> 00:05:08.720
Just do it now.
00:05:09.199 --> 00:05:15.120
So basically that's why they sent me to Mesa where I lived for two weeks.
00:05:15.680 --> 00:05:31.600
And um part of those two weeks were 24 hours intubated, and part of those two weeks were 24 hours intubated in the medically induced coma.
00:05:31.759 --> 00:05:32.399
Yes.
00:05:32.959 --> 00:05:34.480
I don't remember.
00:05:35.040 --> 00:05:36.879
I don't remember what happened.
00:05:36.959 --> 00:06:07.360
I don't remember how, and the funny thing is, my surgeon and I'm consult having consultation with um right now is in Mesa, and the reason why I'm consulting with him is because he specializes in hips and knee replacements.
00:06:08.079 --> 00:06:42.160
So I'm hoping for a partial knee replacement, or a replacement of the kneecap itself, or what they call a groove surgery, meaning they will go in, remove, remove my kneecap temporarily, and they will take a scalpel to my kneecap and make the groove a little bit bigger.
00:06:42.480 --> 00:06:51.360
Fun fact about cerebals and Daniel's don't probably shake your head at this one, even though I can't see it right now.
00:06:52.240 --> 00:07:01.040
But sample palsy's kids in general are little, are little.
00:07:01.439 --> 00:07:10.879
We are little, we don't have big bone structures, or bone structures barely keep us alive.
00:07:11.759 --> 00:07:20.959
And um so we are little, we are small stature, we are small in height, we are little.
00:07:21.839 --> 00:07:29.040
So my little kneecap is suffering because of my little bone structure.
00:07:29.360 --> 00:07:35.040
And Danielle's shaking her hand at this point because I know she is.
00:08:47.120 --> 00:08:54.320
I'm hoping for a partial knee, but we'll see what he says about CP.
00:08:55.279 --> 00:09:02.159
So um I would rather go with him, um, Dr.
00:09:02.399 --> 00:09:13.519
Herman, out of East Mesa on the house, because of he specializes in these and hips.
00:09:13.919 --> 00:09:14.639
Number one.
00:09:15.360 --> 00:09:19.600
And so that's fabulous.
00:09:19.919 --> 00:09:36.399
Also, he's a member of my one of my fabulous hospital networks, which happens to be my heart hospital, and I mean not physical heart, I wish.
00:09:36.879 --> 00:09:45.519
But when I say my heart hospital, I have a love and affinity for this hospital.
00:09:45.759 --> 00:09:53.600
Always will, always will love it because the staff and the doctors are wonderful.
00:09:54.159 --> 00:10:19.120
But I spent uh a week in honor house because of my back, and they took care of my sick little body when I got pneumonia, slash attorney bowl, slash my church family took care of me.
00:10:19.279 --> 00:10:28.879
I didn't have a luxury of aids at AIDS that come to the hospital at that time.
00:10:29.519 --> 00:10:40.720
So um, so basically this hospital network took care of me when I needed it the most.
00:10:41.440 --> 00:10:46.559
And that's after my second spinal fusion.
00:10:47.200 --> 00:10:57.759
My first spinal fusion 15 years ago did not take, so and that was done at a children's hospital in Colorado.
00:10:59.039 --> 00:11:34.000
So yeah, so that is why I have a love and affinity for this hospital, because it took care of my back and me when I knew nothing about Arizona Medical or when I so I was a baby Arizona resident, a baby in Arizona, just moved there and proceeded to have a six-hour back operation.
00:11:34.320 --> 00:11:35.840
Didn't know which way was up.
00:11:36.639 --> 00:11:50.399
And so my church family slash the which my church family has changed, but some of them are still um with my church family.
00:11:50.559 --> 00:12:03.039
And when I say my church family, the Episcopal Church, and the Episcopal Church has embraced me like there's no tomorrow.
00:12:03.120 --> 00:12:05.440
They know I'm a little off annie over here.
00:12:06.320 --> 00:12:15.120
When I say that, a little off annie, and because I have no parents, uh, they know my history.
00:12:15.759 --> 00:12:26.720
So, and I went off that player list, but that's not going to happen until I have this surgery.
00:12:26.960 --> 00:12:35.600
And this is gonna be my last surgery forever, unless it's emergency.
00:12:36.399 --> 00:12:43.440
Unless they say you need emergency surgery, then I'll do it.
00:12:43.679 --> 00:12:49.279
But this is gonna be my last surgery forever.
00:12:49.679 --> 00:13:02.159
Leave CP alone, leave win and ours alone, I'm allergic to anesthesia anyway, I'm allergic to propofol.
00:13:03.360 --> 00:13:08.639
So the less anesthesia risk, the better.
00:13:09.279 --> 00:13:32.639
And so that's why I want uh MPFL slash a groove surgery all in one two for the price of one, all partial knee, because I want this knee fixed, I want the hardware removed, I want this knee fixed.
00:13:32.960 --> 00:13:36.000
So that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
00:13:36.159 --> 00:13:46.399
And little older me is gonna be so damn persistent, and it's going to be interesting.
00:13:46.720 --> 00:13:55.200
Oh, and I have my consultation on October 27th, so yeah.
00:13:55.519 --> 00:14:03.919
Little older me is gonna be the squeaky wheel that gets the grease, and I'm sorry to medical system.
00:14:04.480 --> 00:14:26.720
Little older me is going to advocate for self and I'm going screaming from the rooftops when I wake up and have a partial knee, I'm gonna scream Yahoo, or have the groove surgery plus the BFL, I'm going to also scream Yahoo.
00:14:27.519 --> 00:14:39.919
So I Yahoo is gonna be said when I wake up from my last surgery because it's going to be my last surgery.
00:14:40.080 --> 00:14:44.159
I'm 40 years, I'm almost 40.
00:14:44.559 --> 00:14:50.320
My bones are bad enough, they're tired of being cracked open.
00:14:50.720 --> 00:15:12.559
And my doctor said to me today, the clicking and popping is not a big deal because as you age your bones get old and you're almost 40, and she gave me the almost 40 speech about my bones clicking and popping.
00:15:12.879 --> 00:15:18.480
But I want the hardware removed so that my knee can actually bend.
00:15:19.279 --> 00:15:38.080
Right now it's not bending without help, so that's why I'm looking at a partial knee or MPF surgery with a groove, making the groove bigger where the kneecap sits.
00:15:38.639 --> 00:15:41.679
So I will let you guys know what we decide.
00:15:41.759 --> 00:15:45.360
I will also let people know on Facebook.
00:15:46.080 --> 00:15:49.679
And so that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
00:15:50.000 --> 00:15:52.559
Danielle, do you want to leave us out?
00:15:53.919 --> 00:15:54.559
Yeah.
00:16:00.159 --> 00:16:04.559
What the cute Brondy said, thank you for following us.
00:16:04.799 --> 00:16:10.720
And I think the cute Brondy and I are both emotionally and physically exhausted.
00:16:10.960 --> 00:16:14.879
I know I'm emotionally exhausted because I've been so busy.
00:16:15.360 --> 00:16:17.679
So thank you for following us.
00:16:19.120 --> 00:16:20.000
Oh yeah.
00:16:21.120 --> 00:16:22.240
Oh yeah.
00:16:22.879 --> 00:16:50.879
And the cute little Blondie, Danielle, is going to be in a play, um, called Cinderella in Aspen, obviously, and she is so excited that she gets to perform in that play with abold able bodied actors.
00:16:51.279 --> 00:16:54.240
So I'm so excited for her.
00:17:25.359 --> 00:17:28.319
But can we talk about this offline?
00:17:29.039 --> 00:17:30.559
It's amazing.
00:17:30.880 --> 00:17:33.759
It's amazing, it's amazing, it's amazing.
00:17:34.400 --> 00:17:38.160
I am so stinking happy for you.
00:17:38.720 --> 00:17:52.400
And so, yeah, that's why we're a little emotionally and physically exhausted, because see we choose to run around like chickens with all I had to cut off.
00:17:52.720 --> 00:18:08.079
CP doesn't like it, but we push through CP and make CP scream half the time and then fall over and say, we're done.
00:18:08.480 --> 00:18:15.599
And that's how uh Danielle and I do it, and probably the most of the CP population.
00:18:16.319 --> 00:18:20.640
But I um so my surgery is on hold.
00:18:20.799 --> 00:18:30.000
I will keep you guys uh updated as I always do on what we what we decide to do on surgery.
00:18:30.160 --> 00:18:52.319
Yes, I'm having surgery, yes, I want my mobility back, but I just have to decide what surgery is right for me, whether it's personally or totally on groove slash MPFL surgery, which fixes ligament in place.
00:18:52.720 --> 00:19:01.519
So I will keep you guys updated what they say, and I will let you guys go.
00:19:02.240 --> 00:19:06.960
And Danielle already said thank you for following us.
00:19:07.279 --> 00:19:11.359
So I will come beyond it and say thank you for following us.
00:19:11.599 --> 00:19:13.039
Bye you guys.
00:19:14.079 --> 00:19:14.720
Bye.
