As we prepare to start the new year, many of us feel the need to slow down and take stock of where we’ve been. In this episode of A Better Way to Heal, faith-based therapist, Eleanor Brown (Elly) and her co-host Isamary (Isa) explore year-end reflection as a grounding practice that helps settle the mind, calm the body, and bring clarity before moving into a new season.
Rather than rehearsing regret or pushing ourselves toward unrealistic resolutions, this conversation offers a better way to start the new year, one rooted in grace, awareness, and whole-person healing through faith and therapy. Together, they walk through five meaningful ways to reflect on the past year, including noticing emotional growth, reviewing relationships and boundaries, understanding what supported or stressed your nervous system, and identifying what you’re ready to leave behind.
Elly also shares how faith, surrender, and stillness have shaped her own reflection process, including letting go of performance-driven expectations, shame-based stories, and trauma-informed control patterns. The episode closes with a gentle invitation to reflect through a whole-person lens using the seven dimensions of wellness and a preview of what’s coming next in Part 2 on Vision Casting.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.120
So in counseling, a lot of times we start with the end in mind.
00:00:03.520 --> 00:00:11.839
So when you think about the uh the year-end reflection, did if you started with the year in mind, did you meet that?
00:00:12.080 --> 00:00:23.120
Did you kind of did you hit your your goals, your the things that you wanted, your earmarks, if you will, um or did you find yourself falling short?
00:00:23.199 --> 00:00:24.000
And that's okay.
00:00:24.160 --> 00:00:25.679
Either way is fine.
00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:28.879
It's it is 100% fine.
00:00:29.600 --> 00:00:35.280
Hello, everybody, and welcome to A Better Way to Heal, where faith meets therapy.
00:00:36.159 --> 00:00:37.359
Hello, everybody.
00:00:37.520 --> 00:00:39.520
I'm Ellie and I'm Issa.
00:00:39.840 --> 00:00:42.399
And you are watching A Better Way to Heal.
00:00:42.479 --> 00:00:43.679
And we're happy you're here.
00:00:43.920 --> 00:00:44.799
We absolutely are.
00:00:45.039 --> 00:00:54.640
Before we get started today, we really want to tell you about something that uh will help you as you start reflecting on your new year.
00:00:55.200 --> 00:00:58.719
So, what Ellie is talking about is the Shane quiz.
00:00:58.880 --> 00:01:00.399
Have you taken it lately?
00:01:00.640 --> 00:01:02.799
Has anything been sneaking up on you?
00:01:02.960 --> 00:01:05.599
It's a great opportunity to go ahead and try it out.
00:01:05.840 --> 00:01:06.480
It really is.
00:01:06.640 --> 00:01:12.719
It only takes a few minutes and it gives you a starting point for understanding how Shane is showing up in your life.
00:01:12.879 --> 00:01:20.159
Yeah, if you're looking now at the end of the year or the beginning of the year, and you're trying to get clarity on where you're headed, it's a great starting tool.
00:01:20.400 --> 00:01:21.359
It really is.
00:01:21.760 --> 00:01:22.959
So breathe.
00:01:23.120 --> 00:01:26.000
And now it's time to jump into our uh conversation.
00:01:26.319 --> 00:01:27.359
Okay, let's do it.
00:01:27.680 --> 00:01:28.000
Okay.
00:01:28.560 --> 00:01:41.920
So today we are talking about year-end reflections and how they can help settle yourself, you know, your mind, your body, all of those things before we really start looking at the beginning of the year.
00:01:42.159 --> 00:01:48.319
Yes, it's like taking inventory, personal inventory of where you've been and what you need to stop at by the new year.
00:01:48.480 --> 00:01:49.280
Yeah, absolutely.
00:01:49.519 --> 00:01:56.079
I want to take uh some time as I do my year-end reflection, take some time and be still before the Lord.
00:01:56.239 --> 00:01:56.480
Yeah.
00:01:56.719 --> 00:01:57.519
It's very interesting.
00:01:57.680 --> 00:01:59.359
So five ways to reflect.
00:01:59.599 --> 00:02:02.640
You can do look back with grace and not crusher.
00:02:03.040 --> 00:02:03.680
Absolutely.
00:02:03.920 --> 00:02:11.759
How many times have we do we beat ourselves up for not getting things as far along as we would we would like to?
00:02:11.840 --> 00:02:12.159
Yeah.
00:02:12.400 --> 00:02:15.199
But we really want to take time to celebrate this moment.
00:02:15.599 --> 00:02:19.280
So we want to look back and not just meditate on the things that went wrong.
00:02:19.599 --> 00:02:22.240
We want to think about all those moments that went right.
00:02:22.400 --> 00:02:22.639
Yeah.
00:02:22.719 --> 00:02:25.439
How did you grow so emotionally over the year?
00:02:25.680 --> 00:02:26.080
Yeah.
00:02:26.319 --> 00:02:26.560
Yeah.
00:02:26.719 --> 00:02:30.240
Moments that stretched you, we really want to look at those.
00:02:30.400 --> 00:02:33.599
What habits or inner winds surfaced throughout the year?
00:02:33.840 --> 00:02:34.960
So relationships.
00:02:35.120 --> 00:02:36.879
How did we handle our relationships?
00:02:37.039 --> 00:02:44.080
If you had gains in relationships, improvements in your relationships, what things made it better and what things you could improve on next year?
00:02:44.319 --> 00:02:45.280
Yeah, absolutely.
00:02:45.599 --> 00:02:48.800
Really want to uh look in areas.
00:02:48.960 --> 00:02:52.800
I know we've done a few episodes on relationships because they're so important.
00:02:53.439 --> 00:02:56.000
Where have you shifted a boundary?
00:02:56.159 --> 00:03:04.159
Uh, where have you um noticed that you were really exhausted having a friendship that maybe feels more tiring?
00:03:04.400 --> 00:03:07.439
Could be a season, it could be a lifetime.
00:03:07.680 --> 00:03:14.719
You know, maybe it's time to uh shift to a different friendship, or maybe it's time to reflect on how you showed up.
00:03:14.879 --> 00:03:15.680
Yep, correct.
00:03:16.319 --> 00:03:23.120
So when you review those things that drained you and that seemed more difficult than other seasons, take stock of that.
00:03:23.360 --> 00:03:25.439
Do some journaling, soak it in.
00:03:25.680 --> 00:03:31.919
Um, not all discomfort is meant to be avoided, or actually nothing should this year has been so.
00:03:32.240 --> 00:03:44.000
And it's really leaning into moments where I'm able to really surrender myself and be open to God's plan because sometimes I really want to fight it.
00:03:44.080 --> 00:03:44.479
Yeah.
00:03:44.639 --> 00:03:50.240
Um something to really think about is what supported your nervous system and what spiked it.
00:03:50.479 --> 00:04:00.240
I've talked a lot about the nervous system this year, uh, but uh we can be in fight or flight, we can be in freeze or falling, and we don't even realize it.
00:04:00.400 --> 00:04:07.840
And as we start to become more aware of what our nervous system, it's like our nervous system is telling us there's something off.
00:04:08.240 --> 00:04:17.759
And it could be our perceiver, and so we want to reflect, and it could be that we're in a situation that our nervous system deems is unsafe.
00:04:18.000 --> 00:04:18.480
Yes.
00:04:18.800 --> 00:04:21.920
So what things do you want to leave behind this year as well?
00:04:22.079 --> 00:04:28.160
As we're moving forward and taking in these tools and these lessons learned, what things do we need to drop and never pick up again?
00:04:28.319 --> 00:04:28.720
Absolutely.
00:04:28.959 --> 00:04:51.279
You know, one of the things that um I I've really been working hard on, and as we look at the the things that the Shame quiz teaches us and learning about Shane and understanding our old shame stories, that's really something that I'm working on, you know, really helping even clients to leave that story behind.
00:04:51.439 --> 00:04:54.399
You know, yes, my past told me I wasn't good enough.
00:04:54.560 --> 00:04:57.360
Yes, my past told me someone else could do it better.
00:04:57.519 --> 00:05:06.240
However, this is the ground uh in the Bible it talks about um that we've been given dominion.
00:05:06.319 --> 00:05:10.319
And I don't think we we understand really what that even means.
00:05:10.560 --> 00:05:16.720
But when we have dominion over a territory, we're to take authority over that.
00:05:16.879 --> 00:05:25.279
And yes, somebody else could do what they do better than you, but that's because they're doing what they do, not what we're supposed to do.
00:05:25.519 --> 00:05:48.319
But this past week I was meditating on it, and one of the things that God gave me was thankfulness, of course, but thankfulness with a purpose, like intentional thankfulness to see all the things that I do have and shift my focus from what is lacking to what is available, and then really see all the things that I can actually do with what I have.
00:05:48.480 --> 00:05:52.240
It turns out to be exhausting, actually, to look at everything you do have.
00:05:52.399 --> 00:06:02.480
That list is a lot longer than it is, but it goes back to your dominion and authority over what you can control, and it attracts more things that are positive.
00:06:02.560 --> 00:06:03.519
It's just the way it works.
00:06:03.759 --> 00:06:04.480
Absolutely.
00:06:04.720 --> 00:06:11.680
You know, something else that it can be helpful to leave behind is performance-driven expectations.
00:06:12.079 --> 00:06:25.680
Okay, performance-driven expectations is another one of those things that we can really work on leaving behind, and we can leave it behind because uh performance-driven uh expectations.
00:06:25.920 --> 00:06:30.480
I I think about that as performance-driven self-esteem.
00:06:30.800 --> 00:06:34.240
I'm only good if I work hard enough.
00:06:35.360 --> 00:06:43.360
We can never be good enough because there'll always be something better that we can do.
00:06:43.519 --> 00:06:47.519
As a one on the Enneagram, I make things better.
00:06:47.759 --> 00:06:54.000
And you give I I have a hard time starting it, but once it's done, I can make it better.
00:06:54.240 --> 00:06:58.079
And then I can make it even better, and then I can make it even better.
00:06:58.319 --> 00:07:02.639
The problem is, is that there's always something else I could do to make it better.
00:07:02.800 --> 00:07:04.399
You know, it's that perfectionism.
00:07:04.560 --> 00:07:04.959
Yeah.
00:07:05.279 --> 00:07:11.279
And I think if you start from a place of identity, me, my identity is rooted in Christ.
00:07:11.439 --> 00:07:17.839
And even though grace isn't permission to be sloppy and not do my best, right, in life, it doesn't mean that.
00:07:17.920 --> 00:07:23.120
It just means that if I'm not there, I'm not perfect, it doesn't mean I have to quit or stop.
00:07:23.279 --> 00:07:29.600
There's always something to build on, and it's not a deficiency in me that there's always something to build on.
00:07:29.759 --> 00:07:36.720
It's designed so that I could be dependent on the one who created me and that I can continue to grow and improve and go from glory to glory.
00:07:36.879 --> 00:07:37.519
Yeah, yeah.
00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:41.839
There's a saying I I like to say it's but done is better than perfect.
00:07:42.079 --> 00:07:48.399
That way you can rest because we don't rest well enough, especially Americans.
00:07:48.720 --> 00:07:52.319
We are constantly doing people.
00:07:52.560 --> 00:08:02.560
Yes, and then it comes to overcommitting and trying to people police and hustling and grinding and considering not being in perpetual laziness, which is not true.
00:08:02.720 --> 00:08:08.079
But I also wanted to add, we do this, but we also tend to put that pressure on other people.
00:08:08.240 --> 00:08:13.360
I always like to see it from not only admitting, but am I pressuring other people?
00:08:13.519 --> 00:08:16.560
Am I able to hear a no and not be offended?
00:08:16.800 --> 00:08:21.839
Am I able to let my friend say, today I actually need to rest and not take it personal?
00:08:22.160 --> 00:08:28.079
Am I able to give her grace because I know she has a job, I know she has counseling, I know.
00:08:28.160 --> 00:08:33.200
So if I asked her if you do something with me, am I able to give her that extension of place to rest?
00:08:33.360 --> 00:08:42.159
Because we talk a lot about us resting, but are we giving other people that's when we know that we're really walking toward a place of healing when we're able to do that?
00:08:42.559 --> 00:08:48.480
When we're able to take someone's no as not a reflection on who we are, correct.
00:08:48.960 --> 00:08:50.240
It's a need that they have.
00:08:50.480 --> 00:08:51.440
Yes, yes.
00:08:51.679 --> 00:08:56.159
So working toward meeting our own needs and allowing other people to meet theirs.
00:08:56.480 --> 00:08:56.720
Correct.
00:08:56.960 --> 00:08:57.679
It's so important.
00:08:57.919 --> 00:08:59.200
Uh a funny story.
00:08:59.360 --> 00:09:07.759
Recently we were going to get together for uh a podcast, and I was I I had had a really rough day.
00:09:08.320 --> 00:09:12.320
And the old me would have really pushed past that.
00:09:12.559 --> 00:09:13.919
And I did not.
00:09:14.080 --> 00:09:17.679
I texted you and I said, I'm just not gonna be able, you know.
00:09:17.840 --> 00:09:22.159
I just I could push past it, but I just don't I just don't feel it.
00:09:23.039 --> 00:09:33.440
And um and you were so gracious and did not well, Ellie, we had this time schedule and it really allowed me to take that time to rest.
00:09:33.519 --> 00:09:33.919
Yeah.
00:09:34.159 --> 00:09:39.279
And then we can come together and present something that comes from a rested place.
00:09:39.360 --> 00:09:40.639
It's always going to be better.
00:09:40.799 --> 00:09:49.039
Sometimes our desire to please other people, or honestly, it's okay to want to meet your appointments and your deadlines.
00:09:49.120 --> 00:09:52.639
It's not saying that that's a habitual thing that you want to do, right?
00:09:52.799 --> 00:09:55.279
But we also want to be honest and vulnerable.
00:09:55.360 --> 00:10:01.120
And if we're not living those things out, other people don't think that they have space to do it as well.
00:10:01.360 --> 00:10:02.000
Absolutely.
00:10:02.159 --> 00:10:03.039
Absolutely.
00:10:07.600 --> 00:10:09.200
Hey friends, pause.
00:10:09.360 --> 00:10:15.600
We wanted to remind you about a couple of resources that might support you while you're working through today's episode.
00:10:15.759 --> 00:10:18.399
Yes, some of these conversations can get very heavy.
00:10:18.559 --> 00:10:24.399
And if you want to take stock of what we're speaking and how it's affecting you, feel free to take the Shane quiz on Ellie's website.
00:10:24.639 --> 00:10:31.200
And if you're wanting tools to move forward, especially as you think about the new year, grab the A Better Way guide.
00:10:31.360 --> 00:10:34.879
It walks you through the Better Framework step by step.
00:10:35.279 --> 00:10:41.360
Both are free, simple to read through and follow up, and a great foundation for wherever you are right now.
00:10:41.600 --> 00:10:43.440
All right, back to the episode.
00:10:49.519 --> 00:10:50.159
Yes.
00:10:50.720 --> 00:11:02.320
So one of the things that I look at when we look at the year-in re reflection and really kind of what are some of the things that that we reflect on over the year.
00:11:02.559 --> 00:11:12.080
And for me, really leaning into that, at the beginning of the year, I always tie scripture to any kind of word that I feel like God has given me.
00:11:12.399 --> 00:11:34.320
And when I look at that, I think of the areas where maybe I can see really fulfilled on so when I think of the word and when I think of the reflection and the scripture, do the things that I've done throughout the year, do they lean toward this?
00:11:34.559 --> 00:11:38.000
Or did I somewhere along the way lose that?
00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:39.679
And it's okay if I did.
00:11:39.759 --> 00:11:41.679
I just give myself grace.
00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:47.679
But I can see areas where I have surrendered and I have allowed God to have his way.
00:11:47.840 --> 00:11:53.279
So when we did this last year, or at the beginning of the year, I didn't have quite a word.
00:11:53.519 --> 00:11:55.039
It was more like a sentiment.
00:11:55.200 --> 00:12:00.240
I felt like God was just a testing season, a season of just observe.
00:12:00.399 --> 00:12:04.000
And it was a combination of observe, surrender, be still.
00:12:04.320 --> 00:12:10.799
But I feel entering into 2026, I'm getting a clear picture of surrender and stillness.
00:12:10.879 --> 00:12:15.120
And I think that will be my 2026 word, being surrender.
00:12:15.600 --> 00:12:17.759
And surrender has a lot of layers.
00:12:17.840 --> 00:12:21.360
In particular, to me, is I cannot control every situation.
00:12:21.440 --> 00:12:36.159
So a lot of my trauma-based reaction is control, controlling people's moods around me, controlling finances at home, controlling everything in order to just not not have it fall apart or be taken or whatever the case may be.
00:12:36.399 --> 00:12:38.480
And honestly, control is an illusion.
00:12:39.360 --> 00:12:48.320
So when we surrender to the Lord to the fact that I am taking care of myself, I am being a good steward of XYZ, and that's all I can handle right now.
00:12:48.480 --> 00:12:50.240
Everything should fall into place.
00:12:50.399 --> 00:12:52.879
Um and we could talk longer about that, but we're not.
00:12:56.159 --> 00:12:57.360
Uh yes.
00:12:57.600 --> 00:13:11.679
So as we really start kind of thinking about the year-end reflection, one of the things that I did last year is I just took a few minutes and tried to answer some of those questions.
00:13:11.840 --> 00:13:14.559
The the where are things gone well?
00:13:14.799 --> 00:13:18.720
Where of self, where are the engaging times where I've really engaged?
00:13:18.960 --> 00:13:23.360
Where are the times that I've really feel like I've rested and write those down.
00:13:23.519 --> 00:13:25.679
Hopefully we've been doing some of that throughout the year.
00:13:25.919 --> 00:13:27.600
Yes, it's good to get into that habit.
00:13:27.679 --> 00:13:32.720
I have notes here and there, but as you are speaking, I'm thinking about doing an inventory.
00:13:32.960 --> 00:13:36.720
Those who have businesses, or even just think of your grocery list, you know.
00:13:36.960 --> 00:13:41.919
It's usually more efficient when you're keeping track of what's missing.
00:13:42.159 --> 00:13:48.320
But right when you're gonna go to the grocery store, you give it another glance and you're like, you don't want to overbuy something that you don't need.
00:13:48.399 --> 00:13:50.480
And you it's the same thing for our lives.
00:13:50.639 --> 00:13:57.440
We have to where where have I where has the year brought me and where do I want to be at the end of next year?
00:13:57.519 --> 00:14:00.320
And what things do I have to adjust in order to meet that goal?
00:14:00.399 --> 00:14:00.559
Yeah.
00:14:00.799 --> 00:14:03.919
So in counseling, a lot of times we start with the end in mind.
00:14:04.159 --> 00:14:12.480
So when you think about the uh year-and reflection, did if you started with year in mind, did you meet that?
00:14:12.720 --> 00:14:21.840
Did you kind of your your goals, the things that you wanted, your earmarks, if you will, or did you find yourself falling short?
00:14:21.919 --> 00:14:22.639
And that's okay.
00:14:22.799 --> 00:14:24.080
Either way is fine.
00:14:24.240 --> 00:14:26.559
It's it is 100% fine.
00:14:26.720 --> 00:14:31.919
But one of the things that I like to think about is taking that time.
00:14:32.159 --> 00:14:45.200
For me, I take a week off at the end of the year, and I use that to close up 2025 so that when I go into 2026, I'm not carrying that with me.
00:14:46.000 --> 00:14:47.919
And I think that's so important.
00:14:48.320 --> 00:14:55.679
Take the lessons that you've learned, but you don't have to carry it with you, especially those things that we deem as our failures.
00:14:55.840 --> 00:14:56.000
Yeah.
00:14:56.159 --> 00:14:59.600
And I think when you're doing inventory, what is failure, right?
00:15:00.080 --> 00:15:15.600
Um, I think you should give grace that you're extending to others, hopefully extending to others, and really break down what those failures are, not with the intent of condemnation or shame, but with empowerment, with dominion.
00:15:15.679 --> 00:15:18.639
I was like, yeah, own the mistakes, the real mistakes.
00:15:18.799 --> 00:15:23.919
And mistakes are mistakes that you make, not that other people made and you took responsibility for.
00:15:24.000 --> 00:15:24.960
So that's another one.
00:15:25.120 --> 00:15:25.600
Absolutely.
00:15:25.840 --> 00:15:29.679
But be accountable and be like, okay, could I have helped that?
00:15:29.840 --> 00:15:32.639
And if I could have, how can I do it next year?
00:15:32.879 --> 00:15:37.360
Because honestly, I think we could it it could be very deep, but I'll just grace over it.
00:15:37.519 --> 00:15:41.120
Sometimes people are going through illnesses, whether they're physical or mental.
00:15:42.240 --> 00:15:50.799
And they fall short in certain things that they had designed to do, but you have to acknowledge, did you actually have control over that moment?
00:15:51.120 --> 00:15:51.759
Absolutely.
00:15:52.000 --> 00:15:57.120
And if you didn't, then again, you did the best that you could within what you had, you did not fail.
00:15:57.279 --> 00:16:02.960
Now, if you've are being made to feel that way, maybe your inventory has to be stalking.
00:16:03.120 --> 00:16:04.559
Who are you surrounded by?
00:16:04.799 --> 00:16:10.399
Are you surrounded by people that are holding you accountable and not themselves accountable?
00:16:10.559 --> 00:16:16.159
Or are you surrounded by people that can support where you are in the season that you're in?
00:16:16.320 --> 00:16:17.600
Absolutely, absolutely.
00:16:17.759 --> 00:16:23.759
So it's so important, the people that we have uh that we have around us, the the community.
00:16:24.000 --> 00:16:27.440
Uh, you know, you don't have to have everything figured out.
00:16:27.759 --> 00:16:43.600
But if you can just show up, show up and uh, you know, show up with your faith of who you are, leaning to that space of thriving, that space of that whole person and looking at the whole part of me.
00:16:43.759 --> 00:16:48.320
And that's another thing that we want to uh at the 11th hour I'm throwing in.
00:16:48.960 --> 00:16:54.480
But there's uh seven dimensions of wellness that we talk about in uh in therapy a lot.
00:16:54.720 --> 00:17:05.519
Looking at all those dimensions and finding out where where do I feel like I am right now can really help us as we reflect on the year that we just came as we're ending.
00:17:05.680 --> 00:17:08.079
And you can use this at the end of any season.
00:17:08.160 --> 00:17:14.160
You can use this at the end of a quarter to see I want my next quarter to start stronger.
00:17:14.319 --> 00:17:14.559
Yeah.
00:17:14.799 --> 00:17:19.359
So I think this is this is a good place to stop for today.
00:17:19.519 --> 00:17:24.640
Next time we're gonna talk about um vision casting.
00:17:24.720 --> 00:17:25.440
I'm so sorry.
00:17:25.599 --> 00:17:36.640
I was like, I had it at the tip of my tongue, but vision I was just really taking inventory and stock of the episode that I totally forgot that I had to cast into the future.
00:17:36.880 --> 00:17:41.119
All right, friends, thank you for hanging out with us today.
00:17:41.440 --> 00:17:45.119

00:17:45.440 --> 00:17:46.160
