What happens when your first days as Chief look nothing like you imagined?
Chief Rick Scott moved from Texas to California in 2021 ready to begin a new chapter leading the San Luis Obispo Police Department. Just days before he was set to officially start, the department lost Detective Luca Benedetti in the line of duty, changing everything about how Rick entered the role and what leadership would require of him.
In this episode of 4-Star Conversations, Rick reflects on that experience and the lessons that have shaped his leadership since: listening before acting, putting organizational health ahead of personal agendas, and remembering that the Chief’s job is to serve the people they lead.
He also shares his perspective on the future of police leadership, staying grounded outside the job, and why taking care of the person behind the title matters just as much as taking care of the organization.
