SELLEST OSAST
Did you know a company can decide its own chemical is safe, put it in your food, and never tell the FDA it exists? …We looked into it. 🧂
Welcome to Valid Source? ... the podcast where we investigate the internet myths, viral claims, and trending gossip you've been thinking about but haven't had time to research. We're not experts. We're just two friends willing to do the extra digging.
This episode: Ashley falls in love with a pork chop and refuses to share it, Harley's fake nails save her finger from an actual break, and we argue about whether golf is secretly a contact sport before finding out what living near a golf course might really do to you.
Then Ashley takes us down a rabbit hole that started with one question, is the FDA getting paid on the side? We go back to what food and medicine looked like before anyone was checking, we walk through Vioxx and fen-phen and what happens when a drug gets approved too fast, and we find out that New York City banned trans fats in 2006 and the FDA didn't act until 2015. Because of course it did.
Then Ashley hits us with the thing that broke both our brains: there are over 10,000 substances allowed in American food, thousands have never been reviewed by anyone, and companies are legally allowed to declare their own chemicals safe without telling the FDA they did it. Harley wants to fix it by hiring more people, Ashley wants to scrap the whole system, and somewhere in there we accidentally invent a t-shirt. We also get into what Colorado just approved, why Florida built a warehouse that's still empty, and because we needed something light after all that, who Zoë Kravitz is reportedly engaged to.
Valid Source? verdict on the FDA: genuinely protecting us, genuinely nine years behind, and apparently running on the honor system with people who have never once been on their honor.
