Wrapping up our first actress-based pairing for Jodie Foster, we move to 2002 and a very different film from last week's! Directed by David Fincher, 2002's "Panic Room" finds Jodie Foster in the role of Meg Altman, a newly-divorced mother trying to figure out how to reclaim her life. She and her daughter Sarah (a very young Kristen Stewart) decide to purchase a massive brownstone home in New York, the former residence of an eccentric and wealthy gentleman. During the walkthrough, Meg notices that one room's dimensions seem off and, sure enough, it's revealed that there is a panic room built into the master bedroom, complete with its own phone line, monitors attached to cameras throughout the building, and supplies to allow one to remain mostly comfortable for days. After moving in, during their first night in their new home, her domicile is invaded by a trio of burglars (Forest Whitaker, Dwight Yoakam, and Jared Leto) whose intentions aren't clear, except that they're looking for something they believe to be in the building. This sets the scene for a very self-contained, tense, and surprising drama that plays out solely within the brownstone, with several interesting twists and turns at the story plays out! The film also features Patrick Bauchau, Ann Magnuson, and Paul Schulze. Plus, the trio reveal which two early CGI-infused science fiction films will make up their first full pairing of 2023!

The second film in our tribute to the late Sam Neill is a small, independent film that most have never heard of, but one where Neill gives a truly outstanding performance. In 2001's "The Zookeeper," director Ralph Ziman takes us to civil war-torn Eastern Europe, where life has become a daily shelli…
Part two of our sports comedy pairing features the film ESPN claimed might be the funniest sports comedy ever! Directed by Harold Ramis (his first time in the chair), 1980's "Caddyshack" follows (sort-of) the story of caddie Danny Noonan (Michael O'Keefe) who works at Bushwood Country Club. After n…
The second horror documentary of the pairing looks at the phenomenon of horror itself and why some people are drawn so strongly to the genre. Directed by Nicolas Kleiman and Rob Lindsay, 2014's "Why Horror?" tries to answer that very question in a variety of ways. From brain measurements in an MRI …
We're pausing our regularly-scheduled list of pairings to pay tribute to the late Sam Neill who passed away in mid-July, 2026. As we've done many of Neill's films already, we're going a bit deeper into his filmography for this pairing, starting with a horror film, the third in an unofficial trilogy…
Sports comedies are the topic of discussion for this pairing, starting with the original hockey-comedy! Directed by George Roy Hill, 1977's "Slap Shot" tells the story of the Charlestown Chiefs, a struggling minor-league hockey team, under the guidance of player, and coach, Reggie Dunlop (Paul Newm…
