00:00.858 --> 00:03.228
[SPEAKER_00]: brought to you by BedroomBattleField.com.
00:03.469 --> 00:06.161
[SPEAKER_00]: This is the table top miniature movie podcast.
00:15.572 --> 00:29.586
[SPEAKER_00]: In the table top miniature war game in Hobbie, an imagination is a fictional country, army, or faction invented by a hobbyist and usually set in a real historical period but detached from actual history.
00:30.207 --> 00:39.576
[SPEAKER_00]: Rather than recreate in a real nation's army, a hobbyist creates an imaginary state with its own flags, uniforms, heraldry, rulers,
00:40.076 --> 00:47.840
[SPEAKER_00]: and often a whimsical or satirical backstory and then builds paints in games with miniature armies represented.
00:48.700 --> 01:03.526
[SPEAKER_00]: I found that definition of imaginations wargaming and thought it would lead us nicely into this conversation with Mark, who hosted an imaginations game in the earlier this month in Newbury, so he is now to tell us all about it.
01:04.067 --> 01:05.807
[SPEAKER_01]: It's probably knocking on the door like seven
01:09.892 --> 01:19.637
[SPEAKER_01]: About four or five years ago, I was just looking around at other things that people were doing, especially looking at blogs from war gamers.
01:19.657 --> 01:34.565
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, most of whom were a bit older than me, but doing things that were just kind of just a bit different, and sort of like on the back of the old hammer thing, but then also drifting into seeing stuff that people were doing that was really, really like proper old school war gaming stuff like,
01:35.145 --> 01:48.455
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, from the 50s and the 60s and there was sort of doing that in revival and kind of bringing it back and the thing that I really kind of liked about it is there's a lot of this appetite for doing, you know, what some people call imaginations stuff.
01:48.475 --> 01:51.817
[SPEAKER_01]: So taking a kind of historical flavored
01:52.660 --> 02:02.583
[SPEAKER_01]: set up and set of miniatures and telling a story with, you know, made up names of these little microenations, normally juking it out.
02:02.883 --> 02:16.787
[SPEAKER_01]: So very much like the sort of background setting in things like the prisoners in, uh, with rural retainer and having these kind of imaginary settings and worlds to kind of allow people, I suppose, that flexibility to do whatever they wanted.
02:17.467 --> 02:20.248
[SPEAKER_01]: And there was a bit of that going on, I was thinking, that's pretty cool.
02:20.388 --> 02:21.888
[SPEAKER_01]: I could imagine doing something with that.
02:22.415 --> 02:34.284
[SPEAKER_01]: Because I think the idea of doing something straight up historical perhaps wasn't something I was kind of immediately into, but the idea of that kind of a Jason way of doing it felt pretty interesting and accessible.
02:34.924 --> 02:47.854
[SPEAKER_01]: And what I really liked about it was just the very nature of the fact that because it's because it's made up and it's all imaginary, it's kind of anything goes in terms of what you how you want to run the game and what you might want to do and so on.
02:48.523 --> 02:51.545
[SPEAKER_01]: So that was kind of there as a bit of a, a bit of a seed.
02:51.725 --> 03:02.232
[SPEAKER_01]: And then alongside that, I always had an interesting sort of a passing ingest in the sort of kind of cool sort of Victorian sci-fi slightly steamed punky sort of stuff.
03:02.572 --> 03:09.056
[SPEAKER_01]: That always kind of interested me, especially a say steamed punk, but more like, you know, classic jewels learn and things like that.
03:09.456 --> 03:11.898
[SPEAKER_01]: So those things were there bubbling away in my mind.
03:12.258 --> 03:13.299
[SPEAKER_01]: And then I watched
03:13.879 --> 03:22.534
[SPEAKER_01]: Probably for about the fourth or fifth time I'd watched it, but the studio jibbly has moving capital adaptation in which there's kind of this
03:23.522 --> 03:35.814
[SPEAKER_01]: which suddenly it's not really in the novel so much, but something that's quite prominent in the film is all these soldiers and this war going on and these airships and I was just thinking yeah this is kind of why I want to base it all up.
03:36.155 --> 03:42.801
[SPEAKER_01]: So it was all those different ingredients all coming together in a bit of an opportunity to think yeah this is kind of crystallising
03:46.361 --> 03:53.728
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, Alan and Michael Perry, Perry Miniatures, they had put in together a range of Franco Prussian War figures.
03:53.788 --> 03:57.451
[SPEAKER_01]: So Franco Prussian War was in like 1871 or something like that.
03:58.011 --> 03:59.633
[SPEAKER_01]: And there was French and Russian figures.
03:59.653 --> 04:01.134
[SPEAKER_01]: They were releasing plastic ones.
04:01.777 --> 04:16.757
[SPEAKER_01]: and the French ones look absolutely the same as the way that in the studio, did we film the troops of the country, Ingrid, where it's set, look like, and it's kind of set at that sort of eight, late 19th century time.
04:17.337 --> 04:22.060
[SPEAKER_01]: although there is a magic in this sort of steam invention and so on.
04:22.561 --> 04:33.728
[SPEAKER_01]: So it felt like it was all these things coming together and so I started buying up these boxes of pairing in it, which is then started looking at other things from the 19th century and like all I have a little bit of this a little bit of that.
04:33.788 --> 04:37.130
[SPEAKER_01]: Anything with the bright colored colourful uniforms and so on.
04:37.150 --> 04:39.712
[SPEAKER_01]: So I put together all this army.
04:40.432 --> 05:06.242
[SPEAKER_01]: It was two armies really, about 450 figures, something like that, painted those up in about 2024, a couple of years ago, and then, since that point, haven't really had a huge amount of gaming opportunity with them, done some solo stuff with it, played a couple of games with a friend of mine who was not really a gamer, but a bit interested in it, more from the storytelling point of view, and that's been good, but since not really been available
05:10.553 --> 05:14.559
[SPEAKER_01]: And so a few months ago, I just put out on the discord.
05:14.579 --> 05:16.702
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, does anyone want to play this game?
05:17.083 --> 05:21.449
[SPEAKER_01]: And if you do, I'll put on, I'll get a venue, I'll bring all the stuff, I'll host it.
05:22.090 --> 05:23.953
[SPEAKER_01]: And the response was really positive.
05:24.353 --> 05:26.697
[SPEAKER_01]: Those of people come back to say, yeah, that looks pretty good.
05:27.857 --> 05:30.419
[SPEAKER_01]: And we were able to arrange and carve out a date.
05:30.619 --> 05:33.220
[SPEAKER_01]: So this Sunday just gone, we did that.
05:33.540 --> 05:40.944
[SPEAKER_01]: It actually held it very close to a JSON live because actually the people who were interested most of them were in the south of England, so that was ideal for people to get to.
05:41.524 --> 05:45.466
[SPEAKER_01]: It was a lovely sunny day, Jason Hyde, this really lovely Victorian village hall.
05:46.086 --> 06:10.005
[SPEAKER_01]: And it was just it all really worked and it was a it was a really great day when six players on the day was seven as well Because Johnny when the place brought his daughter with him, which is lovely, but it just all kind of came together And actually for me from that origin point of just those few ideas meddling around in my mind thinking that could be fun It's really nice to sort of see it come to fruition and so forth
06:10.605 --> 06:23.073
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's kind of getting me thinking of about going a bit full circle and writing some kind of blog post or some ask of about it because it's those blogs and those articles that inspired me to do it in the first place, but yeah, it was great.
06:29.487 --> 06:31.669
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, if I'd test it, he's a massive proponent.
06:31.909 --> 06:32.209
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
06:32.750 --> 06:41.296
[SPEAKER_01]: I know he, um, he's a massive fan of, um, Charles Grant, the, um, one of the very sort of forefathers of war gaming.
06:41.717 --> 06:45.820
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that Charles Grant stuff, um, that's very much rooted in that.
06:45.860 --> 06:49.883
[SPEAKER_01]: So there's these sort of two imaginary nations that have a red army in a blue army that
06:50.646 --> 06:56.750
[SPEAKER_01]: that he used as his kind of like when he was setting out his rules to illustrate how the rules work.
06:56.870 --> 06:58.571
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, Henry's really carried that on.
06:58.911 --> 07:07.816
[SPEAKER_01]: And actually, Henry's two big books, the compendium and the war games campaigns books have been really inspirational to me as well for it.
07:07.856 --> 07:10.337
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Henry's like super into it.
07:10.478 --> 07:12.899
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, the stuff he's done is amazing.
07:14.112 --> 07:41.270
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and speaking of the day that you put on like you mentioned Johnny Watson's daughter and just before we go on here I just watched the video we'd put up done at a really good video of the day Yeah, and the desk all so definitely put that in the show notes for the lesson or two That was a great way pecan everything that sort of went on Yeah, one thing I quite liked about I didn't realize it was filming it, but you felt like I did a lot of sort of stories of introduction to it
07:42.086 --> 07:55.523
[SPEAKER_01]: And what's strange is I was planning on giving a little bit of context and then just getting into the game, but my main thoughts that I was driving there was I need to explain the rules and so on, but because Johnny brought his daughter along.
07:56.961 --> 08:06.170
[SPEAKER_01]: I sort of instantly slipped into the into a kind of mode as I would have done with my kid to a younger, a sort of thinking or almost a kind of a bit of a role play.
08:06.190 --> 08:07.872
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's tell the story kind of a mode.
08:08.372 --> 08:11.635
[SPEAKER_01]: And actually, I think that that's something that people have commented that they liked.
08:11.755 --> 08:13.918
[SPEAKER_01]: They liked knowing what the story of the game was.
08:14.718 --> 08:20.603
[SPEAKER_01]: and taking that out of my mind and putting it into people's mind so they felt like they knew what they were playing for.
08:20.623 --> 08:23.185
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that really added something to it.
08:23.205 --> 08:24.746
[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't something I was really planning to do.
08:24.826 --> 08:29.831
[SPEAKER_01]: So actually Johnny having his daughter there really inspired me to sort of go, how would a kid want to know about it?
08:29.871 --> 08:30.091
[SPEAKER_01]: Why?
08:30.131 --> 08:33.614
[SPEAKER_01]: They'd want to know why we're doing this rather than all the technicalities.
08:34.394 --> 08:51.693
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, is it plus two for a list or minus one but that modifier they just want to know what we're doing and why so that was great That she came along and I'm really glad that John is put that in the video because let's a bit embarrassing I quite like the fact that that was a moment that I think probably made it a little bit of a different kind of a day, which is good
08:52.483 --> 08:56.986
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, it's not like she was the only kid in the room yet that Jason Ed did as well.
08:57.066 --> 08:59.568
[SPEAKER_00]: So I see her and I didn't cap to be it.
09:01.870 --> 09:05.733
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that her all kids for the day, it felt really nice actually in that respect.
09:06.093 --> 09:14.139
[SPEAKER_01]: And actually Rob Dean put a comment on the discord the other day saying, Oh, it's great to see a load of people playing such old school wall gaming.
09:14.199 --> 09:16.241
[SPEAKER_01]: And all of you look considerably younger than me.
09:16.701 --> 09:33.344
[SPEAKER_01]: but actually it felt very sort of timeless and ageless in terms of a way of playing a game, which I think was something it worked really well, because we had from Johnny's daughter up to Martin, who's retired and he joined in and it felt like everyone was kind of on the same page.
09:35.171 --> 09:44.816
[SPEAKER_00]: Talk us through then like the game and you know I've seen bits and pieces on the discord about people comment on particular little fun mechanics and stuff like that.
09:45.177 --> 09:49.639
[SPEAKER_00]: So what actually was going on on the table and and how did you kind of work at all.
09:50.760 --> 09:55.602
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so what I did I chose to use as a sort of set of rules.
09:57.613 --> 09:59.334
[SPEAKER_01]: It's called Rebels and Patriots.
09:59.414 --> 10:01.254
[SPEAKER_01]: It's by Daniel Mersey and Michael Leck.
10:01.354 --> 10:05.756
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's in the same series as the Rampad Games, Dragon Rampad Lion Rampad and so on.
10:06.096 --> 10:15.520
[SPEAKER_01]: It uses very similar mechanics to those games, but it's designed and aimed at like 19th century America, War of Independence.
10:16.020 --> 10:17.321
[SPEAKER_01]: civil war, that kind of era.
10:17.742 --> 10:24.889
[SPEAKER_01]: But the reality is it was really universal and it worked well for what I was doing and it was kind of appropriate.
10:25.109 --> 10:31.335
[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't too futuristic or too to okay, it kind of hit that sort of 19th century vibe well.
10:31.795 --> 10:35.259
[SPEAKER_01]: So I used that as a set of rules, but mainly because it's quite light and quite easy.
10:35.877 --> 10:39.242
[SPEAKER_01]: But I did some different things in terms of actually setting the game up.
10:39.342 --> 10:43.668
[SPEAKER_01]: So when people came in, I gave them a little briefing and then I handed that little card.
10:43.808 --> 10:52.320
[SPEAKER_01]: And on those cards, what was an officer's name, and a flag for which side they were on, and also a special ability sort of trait thing.
10:52.800 --> 11:01.543
[SPEAKER_01]: that they could maybe use once they're game like a little bonus or above, but then I sent them off to go to tables and on the tables I'd set up the units that I'd brought.
11:02.023 --> 11:11.907
[SPEAKER_01]: So although there's a point system in the game and you can not very much like I say Hobgoblin or whatever it might be, it's a kind of archetypes type unit building, certain things.
11:11.927 --> 11:17.769
[SPEAKER_01]: So you go, I'll have a unit of shock infantry and I'll make them veteran and there you go, that's the point.
11:18.149 --> 11:18.589
[SPEAKER_01]: But I've already
11:21.150 --> 11:26.314
[SPEAKER_01]: So roughly using the points this and tried to make them all each unit kind of about equal.
11:26.694 --> 11:38.562
[SPEAKER_01]: So there was some units of cavalry, there was some units of different types of artillery, some units of various infantry, all on table, and it was just each player was told, right, game one, you can have five units each.
11:38.802 --> 11:45.887
[SPEAKER_01]: So some people just chose, I think, because they just, oh, I like the red ones, I like the red ones, and there was a appropriate unit card to go with each one.
11:45.907 --> 11:47.248
[SPEAKER_01]: So those unit cards are really quite
11:47.728 --> 11:54.489
[SPEAKER_01]: useful actually because they condense the rules into a sort of format that they could just have as a great reference for that unit.
11:55.249 --> 12:00.570
[SPEAKER_01]: And it also made the draft sort of almost like a draft if you like so people were just going up to the table and just choosing.
12:00.911 --> 12:06.572
[SPEAKER_01]: I think some people make quite arbitrary decisions and some people make different decisions based on what they liked.
12:07.272 --> 12:12.753
[SPEAKER_01]: One thing that was quite cool is on the team that Edrason, which was the defending team, the
12:14.293 --> 12:28.223
[SPEAKER_01]: The one that had deployment rules for the first game, which he didn't realize at the time was any light infantry or skirmishes can deploy later in the game and kind of come on pop out of places, pop out buildings, pop out of woods, whatever it might be.
12:28.263 --> 12:29.845
[SPEAKER_01]: So Ed decided, oh, do you know what?
12:29.945 --> 12:39.752
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll have all of those units and he played in that way where he could kind of deploy them as he wanted while, meanwhile, Johnny and Jason were deployed at the start of the game.
12:40.279 --> 12:41.099
[SPEAKER_01]: So that was really nice.
12:41.159 --> 12:44.261
[SPEAKER_01]: It was really emergent and it didn't seem to complicate it.
12:44.761 --> 12:45.762
[SPEAKER_01]: So the rules are there.
12:45.822 --> 12:49.904
[SPEAKER_01]: I gave everyone quick reference sheets, but and I didn't play myself.
12:49.964 --> 12:52.525
[SPEAKER_01]: So I was able to kind of guide people through it and so on.
12:53.026 --> 12:57.328
[SPEAKER_01]: Martin, who joined us as well, has got some familiarity with those rampant rules.
12:58.188 --> 13:03.212
[SPEAKER_01]: I know he's obviously a big DBA player and he knows his stuff inside that.
13:03.472 --> 13:06.755
[SPEAKER_01]: So he's great having him on board because he was really good at picking up all of you.
13:06.795 --> 13:09.076
[SPEAKER_01]: Sure on this, he's on that and so forth.
13:09.236 --> 13:12.479
[SPEAKER_01]: And the first few turns we did it where it was quite sequential.
13:12.519 --> 13:15.000
[SPEAKER_01]: So we had three players on the side.
13:15.201 --> 13:18.143
[SPEAKER_01]: So we're one, two, three, okay, that turn over.
13:18.283 --> 13:19.784
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the next team, one, two, three.
13:20.264 --> 13:28.231
[SPEAKER_01]: But then after a couple of turns, it started becoming more continuous where people would go, well, I'll do mine now, people picking up the rules and getting clarity on that.
13:28.691 --> 13:33.395
[SPEAKER_01]: But I mean, meanwhile, we've dropped a few rules, we've forgotten a few things, but nothing consequential.
13:33.935 --> 13:36.517
[SPEAKER_01]: And actually, it rattled along really nicely.
13:36.638 --> 13:40.140
[SPEAKER_01]: And what happened is we managed to get through two games in an afternoon.
13:40.260 --> 13:45.925
[SPEAKER_01]: So we started about one, we wrapped up by about quarter six, and we got two full games done.
13:46.245 --> 13:47.526
[SPEAKER_01]: And it worked really well.
13:47.606 --> 13:49.368
[SPEAKER_01]: So from that perspective,
13:49.888 --> 13:56.950
[SPEAKER_01]: They actually kind of mechanisms and the rules that propelled the day were good, but enough that I thought, yeah, that all worked well.
13:57.250 --> 14:00.751
[SPEAKER_01]: And then in terms of the kind of quirky things, they were introduced in game two.
14:01.292 --> 14:08.714
[SPEAKER_01]: So unfortunately, Johnny and his daughter didn't get season these, because they say for the first game that then had to head back, but in game two, we brought in some extra stuff.
14:08.734 --> 14:11.975
[SPEAKER_01]: So on the injury side, they had access to some magic.
14:12.755 --> 14:35.108
[SPEAKER_01]: and they could cast some spells, and on the strange inside, which were the attackers, they had access to these ingenuity cards that gave them certain benefits and bonuses, including parachuting troops in aerial bombardment, so an airship flying overhead and firing down below, and also some rules where there was a steam tank.
14:35.428 --> 14:36.168
[SPEAKER_01]: There was introduced,
14:41.611 --> 14:43.452
[SPEAKER_01]: And it was great because everyone used those.
14:43.972 --> 14:56.395
[SPEAKER_01]: We didn't really get a spells cast because I came up with this very complicated way of casting the spells, which didn't prevent them, but it was more that I think I just made it a bit too difficult to get the spells off in terms of the target numbers.
14:56.955 --> 15:06.198
[SPEAKER_01]: But all of that stuff, I think, added quite a lot of flavour, but what people quite enjoyed is it was all introduced, like they didn't know those things were going to be available.
15:06.800 --> 15:17.926
[SPEAKER_01]: So, for example, with the aerial, you know, the airborne troops with the parachute, it was just said you can drop two troops in by parachute and then ask them, I don't know, let's blame how to do it.
15:18.266 --> 15:28.671
[SPEAKER_01]: So at the point that Stuart decided he wanted to do that, I then gave him a piece of paper with some templates on the pair of scissors, and he had to cut out things, but you know that you can make that little worldly gig,
15:29.652 --> 15:32.714
[SPEAKER_01]: paper helicopters that fall like sick and more seeds.
15:33.134 --> 15:37.878
[SPEAKER_01]: So the idea was he had to make those throw them on the table and they will band a Monday where they did.
15:37.918 --> 15:45.443
[SPEAKER_01]: And it was really good because people really enjoyed that kind of slightly chaotic slightly emergent gameplay.
15:45.623 --> 15:49.446
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think those, they were nice surprises that I had sort of in store.
15:49.886 --> 15:51.147
[SPEAKER_01]: But another thing that was great is I
15:55.350 --> 15:57.811
[SPEAKER_01]: Just a few days before it took, can I go through these things with you?
15:58.251 --> 16:03.394
[SPEAKER_01]: I really want to start to someone who wasn't going to be there on the day, just to see what do you reckon, do you think it would work?
16:03.854 --> 16:16.881
[SPEAKER_01]: And he was great, because he really gave me some good suggestions, and I think it was really nice to see that payoff, that surprise element, that I think that maybe war games are quite, you know, you've got these big heavy books, and you've got all the rules, you've got this information.
16:17.341 --> 16:18.883
[SPEAKER_01]: and it was actually really nice to have.
16:19.284 --> 16:20.726
[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't just the roles of the dice.
16:20.746 --> 16:24.070
[SPEAKER_01]: There was also a lot of elements that people perhaps didn't expect.
16:24.591 --> 16:30.278
[SPEAKER_01]: But by being the games master, I was able to control those and introduce them and yeah, I think that they went down really well actually.
16:30.298 --> 16:31.119
[SPEAKER_01]: I was really happy with it.
16:32.001 --> 16:33.443
[SPEAKER_01]: Did the best get school down for ill?
16:34.340 --> 16:55.543
[SPEAKER_01]: But this gets did go down well, I think this gets always go down well, but I also, I got, I bought some multi milk biscuits with the cow on them, which just have that, and this is something very cozy about them all, and all the terrain was really nice Jason brought his green, got goblin green games workshop, Matt's the ones that are like static grass on there.
16:56.147 --> 17:04.810
[SPEAKER_01]: and those sort of vinyl plough and we've got these windmills and little farms and it all look very cute, see a nice bright colored character.
17:04.850 --> 17:12.572
[SPEAKER_01]: So it was absolutely not grim dark but the multi notes were definitely on brand and yeah, the disc is always with.
17:13.257 --> 17:17.339
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, talking about the sort of colors and vibrancy as well.
17:17.479 --> 17:20.060
[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's what you said, attraction to animal.
17:20.100 --> 17:32.684
[SPEAKER_00]: I know it's not a period of such, but you know, that kind of 19th century uniform, where it was like, we want to be seen in short rather than who wants to hide and survive.
17:32.724 --> 17:38.166
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was really nice, actually, to seal the stuff out in the table and see the bright colors.
17:41.335 --> 17:49.699
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it didn't look realistic, it didn't look diorama-like, but what it did look is it looked really evocative and it looked really fun.
17:50.159 --> 17:55.121
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that that building little worlds and creating little kind of placecapes.
17:55.958 --> 18:19.010
[SPEAKER_01]: is something that's, you know, it's quite inherently kind of calls back to being quite young and it had that sort of shiny to its old divide but bad it and that I was really pleased with that actually just to see like you say the red coats and the zawaves in their bright colored feathers and their billowing like pantaloons and you know it's all very over the top very pomp and ceremony and it really kind of
18:19.638 --> 18:20.699
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it really set it off.
18:21.019 --> 18:38.169
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's, um, I know that Henry had to begin to that kind of like, you know, all the history has these really lovely old school Spencer Smith, you know, figures with the tricorn hats and shot properly, got gloss vanished and green bases and it's, I actually really like that vibe.
18:38.229 --> 18:43.552
[SPEAKER_01]: I really like the realism as well that people have in their world gaming, but, yeah, it was just something about it that felt really
18:44.152 --> 18:46.515
[SPEAKER_01]: Really old school and really kind of woman.
18:46.815 --> 18:51.481
[SPEAKER_01]: It was really nice to be on a sunny day as well And that sounds silly but everything looked really good as a result.
18:52.101 --> 18:57.187
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you were almost each D wears out in the garden Didn't let a worse probably got the weather.
18:57.207 --> 18:58.509
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, maybe hide up.
18:58.549 --> 18:59.450
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah
19:00.473 --> 19:07.074
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I mean, it's interesting, it was the week after Jeff over at Odebrand had his, um, the woods in the woods.
19:07.555 --> 19:08.955
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I'll look for Odebrand.
19:08.995 --> 19:11.015
[SPEAKER_01]: I've never been to, but I'd like to.
19:11.255 --> 19:12.736
[SPEAKER_01]: And it just looks amazing.
19:12.756 --> 19:19.137
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, if you're going to play a game about a little Bay creatures out in the woods, actually do it in the woods, it's perfect.
19:19.677 --> 19:21.817
[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, you write that, that actually world's thing.
19:21.838 --> 19:22.938
[SPEAKER_01]: That's the next step, isn't it?
19:22.958 --> 19:25.558
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to do an actual, uh, a garden game.
19:25.818 --> 19:28.139
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think it also made me think about how
19:29.495 --> 19:54.550
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there's little old cannons that you could put matchsticks in and pull them back and buy them out and yeah that type of stuff it's like do you know what that's pretty cool and and certainly that that's the black battle master's vibe isn't it, you know, they're sort of practical I'll notice, no, it's a crossbows and cuspalt just with the practical thing but it's just something about that type of group we're gaming it's, um, yeah, I really like the sort of warm fuzziness of it.
19:55.482 --> 19:58.064
[SPEAKER_00]: It must have been a pretty big pink project for you.
19:59.364 --> 20:02.866
[SPEAKER_01]: It was, but weirdly, it didn't take that long.
20:03.006 --> 20:08.770
[SPEAKER_01]: So I got most of it done in about six months, which sounds crazy, and does that show numbers of models.
20:09.424 --> 20:11.466
[SPEAKER_01]: But what I did is a really simple approach.
20:11.506 --> 20:14.248
[SPEAKER_01]: So just let there's no highlights or anything like that.
20:14.268 --> 20:18.112
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just a few base colors and then a really light army painter wash.
20:18.592 --> 20:20.814
[SPEAKER_01]: But the mass effect of it is really good.
20:21.214 --> 20:24.417
[SPEAKER_01]: If you look at each figure, they're not that crisp at all.
20:24.437 --> 20:25.618
[SPEAKER_01]: They're quite basic.
20:26.179 --> 20:27.920
[SPEAKER_01]: But I've bolted based everything.
20:27.940 --> 20:33.045
[SPEAKER_01]: So there's six figures on a sort of 50 x 60 mil square base or rectangular lace.
20:33.485 --> 20:34.386
[SPEAKER_01]: So they're quite packed in.
20:35.275 --> 20:37.017
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's got to advantages.
20:37.117 --> 20:44.666
[SPEAKER_01]: One, it's not that much stuff to carry, but also it just really looks kind of like you just see the unit rather than the individual characters.
20:45.106 --> 20:46.347
[SPEAKER_01]: So it was a biggest job.
20:46.788 --> 20:52.074
[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of strange because I've got more stuff to paint that I want to do, but it's kind of.
20:52.514 --> 21:05.747
[SPEAKER_01]: I think I had that run two years ago where I got loads done and I don't I think two years ago was the year that we didn't have such insane me hot summer for whatever reason and I just was using the mornings when it was light just the pain.
21:06.147 --> 21:16.017
[SPEAKER_01]: So getting up early and just painting before I go to work and I got through loads by doing that you know just sort of 30 minutes every single morning and that's kind of how I cracked it.
21:16.497 --> 21:19.799
[SPEAKER_01]: But after the end of it, I kind of burned myself out a bit, really.
21:20.299 --> 21:24.822
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the next year I did all the wood elves and stuff, so that was great, but again, yeah.
21:25.102 --> 21:31.726
[SPEAKER_01]: And I've really slumped in my painting with us a few months, but I'm kind of saying to myself, there's no point in worrying about that.
21:31.746 --> 21:35.228
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I've got years left, and I haven't got any space.
21:35.790 --> 21:37.751
[SPEAKER_01]: So buying more stuff is a terrible idea.
21:37.771 --> 21:39.772
[SPEAKER_01]: I just need to kind of get through and paint what I've got.
21:39.812 --> 21:43.893
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's, but that day, running it on Sunday, it's maybe go, do you know what?
21:43.933 --> 21:45.714
[SPEAKER_01]: We did loads with this.
21:45.814 --> 21:48.395
[SPEAKER_01]: Two scenarios that worked really well.
21:48.495 --> 21:49.075
[SPEAKER_01]: Quite simple.
21:49.155 --> 21:55.038
[SPEAKER_01]: One was just to kind of go and get some objectives, a scap and locations, type one, very ordinary.
21:55.078 --> 21:56.078
[SPEAKER_01]: But it worked well.
21:56.378 --> 21:58.539
[SPEAKER_01]: And the other one was across the bridge, type one.
21:58.559 --> 21:59.800
[SPEAKER_01]: So it was a river down the middle.
22:00.240 --> 22:02.561
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the attackers had to get a unit across the bridge.
22:03.061 --> 22:20.489
[SPEAKER_01]: So, they weren't complicated, but they were still the multiplayer effect and all, you know, you got that thing with multiplayer games anyway, where people are asking each other questions, doubting whether they should do stuff, there's loads of emergent play that just comes out of it being, you know, several people.
22:20.809 --> 22:26.972
[SPEAKER_01]: Plus, I mean, I think the other side of it is it was just really nice just to spend the afternoon just chatting and just kind of spending time together and
22:27.617 --> 22:35.665
[SPEAKER_01]: when Jason's running this big bring out, you know, knock off tribute, whatever you want to call it in the start of August.
22:35.765 --> 22:39.268
[SPEAKER_01]: That's what I'm mainly looking forward to, it's just going there and just catching up with people in.
22:39.969 --> 22:44.553
[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, there was some new people that came along to the event on Sunday, other people I'd met before.
22:44.893 --> 22:46.375
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just really nice just to kind of
22:47.070 --> 23:06.046
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's just start to really form these sort of really deep friendships with these people that we've met through your community and the adjacent communities and I never would have met them before and yeah, there might only be 25 people who actually want to play games like this in the whole world, but if six of them can come down and meet up on one day, then I'm happy as Larry.
23:07.167 --> 23:09.829
[SPEAKER_00]: What was the response like from the folks at when?
23:11.484 --> 23:12.465
[SPEAKER_01]: really good actually.
23:12.665 --> 23:19.630
[SPEAKER_01]: I asked for some feedback and actually people would be really complimentary about a couple of things.
23:19.911 --> 23:27.636
[SPEAKER_01]: People really enjoyed those sort of emerging things and they enjoyed how they were kind of, they described something that I wanted to achieve.
23:27.736 --> 23:36.163
[SPEAKER_01]: I did think quite hard about was making sure they got drip at the rules in a way that was manageable and they understood what they were doing and they didn't get too much cognitive load and I think
23:39.245 --> 23:49.999
[SPEAKER_01]: Tables with the armies on and they could go and choose what they wanted the units But also meant they could have a little team talk together So the big village home, they could do that either and that was good.
23:50.500 --> 23:52.983
[SPEAKER_01]: I think the other thing that people really liked was the
23:55.498 --> 24:02.066
[SPEAKER_01]: the right balance of a sort of historical, historically plausible scenario.
24:02.087 --> 24:10.878
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, they weren't crazy and full of chaos, but there was enough little bits of fun in things in there like the magic or whatever it might be.
24:10.938 --> 24:12.641
[SPEAKER_01]: Just to introduce those fun elements.
24:13.738 --> 24:20.523
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that the everyone got on really well, which is lovely, but in testament to how everyone conducted themselves.
24:20.904 --> 24:23.545
[SPEAKER_01]: But also it was, I think that was the other thing.
24:23.585 --> 24:24.886
[SPEAKER_01]: It was a great bit of feedback to people.
24:24.906 --> 24:26.447
[SPEAKER_01]: I actually just really enjoyed the day out.
24:26.808 --> 24:29.490
[SPEAKER_01]: I like Johnny's daughter, for example, really, really liked it.
24:29.670 --> 24:32.412
[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, actually, not overall wood.
24:32.432 --> 24:33.913
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think the reason she enjoyed it was
24:34.783 --> 24:36.925
[SPEAKER_01]: because he was really involving her, which is great.
24:37.345 --> 24:43.130
[SPEAKER_01]: But also just like everyone treated her really high levels of respect, you know, it was really nice to have her there.
24:43.150 --> 24:45.992
[SPEAKER_01]: I think we were all delighted that some of her brought their child along.
24:46.052 --> 24:50.776
[SPEAKER_01]: So that, that, it felt really properly inclusive in a really genuine way, which is great.
24:52.097 --> 24:56.180
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it be next up for you the, the Boyle Gets event that you talked about there.
24:57.213 --> 25:00.295
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so that's the next thing I'm going to, which I'm really looking forward to.
25:00.316 --> 25:14.587
[SPEAKER_01]: So I said, you bet three weeks away or something like that, which I'm sure Jason's absolutely panicking because he's got to make loads of stuff, loads of terrain is actually, you give me a sneak peek preview or a silver one today on there on his little WhatsApp group, these
25:22.096 --> 25:29.101
[SPEAKER_01]: dwarven fortress being embedded into the side of, I think he's not done it 28 NL scale.
25:29.121 --> 25:33.703
[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's actually done it one to one scale and he's built a mountain in his shed.
25:34.124 --> 25:37.806
[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's probably going to have to remove his shed to remove the mountain.
25:38.806 --> 25:44.550
[SPEAKER_01]: I get one of those police escorts to drive that up to nothing and where to drive over the center of the roundabout.
25:45.690 --> 26:08.982
[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, I think that's probably what's happened, but it looked properly ace, so yeah, I'm really excited about that, and it's just also, I don't know how many people have got coming, but it's something like knocking on the door, 20 or something, which is really good, so yeah, that'd be really nice to catch up with people, it's the same venue that Johnny Watson held his, called Crown GameStay at.
26:09.542 --> 26:12.503
[SPEAKER_01]: That was the last thing bigger thing that I went to.
26:13.043 --> 26:19.024
[SPEAKER_01]: And so, yeah, it feels like, um, didn't load to the moment we're gaming and meeting up with people and stuff like that.
26:19.104 --> 26:19.744
[SPEAKER_01]: It's been great.
26:19.924 --> 26:28.025
[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, and, um, there's a Xenos rampant game going, uh, day going on near me, uh, at the end of August, uh, that I'm looking forward to going to.
26:28.345 --> 26:29.726
[SPEAKER_01]: It Martin's coming up to that as well.
26:29.746 --> 26:32.246
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a mall at Martin's in Coventures, running that one.
26:32.786 --> 26:35.747
[SPEAKER_01]: So, um, yeah, I'm Coccahute, but those are stuff to do.
26:35.847 --> 26:36.887
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm more than happy.
26:37.227 --> 26:44.981
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you're getting out there, getting games, but that's what it's all about, like especially when you went through that period of prep and loads of paint and stuff.
26:45.021 --> 26:49.810
[SPEAKER_00]: It's nice to be able to gain this meltdown roses with all one just rolls on dice, isn't it?
26:50.695 --> 26:51.636
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's true.
26:51.816 --> 26:52.477
[SPEAKER_01]: It really is true.
26:52.517 --> 27:08.470
[SPEAKER_01]: I think the other thing as well is not to say that like when my kids were younger it was I couldn't do stuff but it was less easy and actually I'm kind of really reaping the benefit of the fact that they are now a bit older and yes on one hand they don't want to play games with me when they did before.
27:09.250 --> 27:18.458
[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't get that game time at home as much as I do, but like it's easier to kind of go out and do things, but yeah that preparation and seeing stuff come together.
27:19.260 --> 27:26.920
[SPEAKER_01]: it's it's really nice and it's a really strong antidote to the kind of dopamine driven
27:27.950 --> 27:36.055
[SPEAKER_01]: instant gratification culture that even if you don't want to be part of it, the world is so so engineered to be that way at the moment.
27:36.455 --> 27:41.819
[SPEAKER_01]: It's really hard to avoid it and just to do some real life actual things is really lovely.
27:42.499 --> 27:46.381
[SPEAKER_01]: And you're just fine to self, you're your phones are
27:50.824 --> 27:56.691
[SPEAKER_01]: It was just taking time to do some of those really practical and really old school and really real.
27:57.252 --> 28:04.821
[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, not in some kind of weird pseudo nostalgia thing where you're like, oh, yeah, let's pretend for a while the world doesn't as it is.
28:05.162 --> 28:07.785
[SPEAKER_01]: That's actually more like, no, this is actually how it can be.
28:07.825 --> 28:09.807
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, that you can have hobbies that are like this.
28:11.048 --> 28:25.116
[SPEAKER_01]: of practical and analog, and they have a real place in the real world, and actually the digital connection and connectivity from the ecological, social, media, or however you want to label it, you know, the online communities.
28:25.496 --> 28:28.377
[SPEAKER_01]: They are like the enzymes that's making it all happen.
28:28.798 --> 28:31.499
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's kind of this best of both worlds thing, actually.
28:31.799 --> 28:33.960
[SPEAKER_01]: You've got that online connectivity,
28:39.680 --> 28:41.261
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's incredibly rich.
28:42.221 --> 28:48.644
[SPEAKER_00]: Speaking of the online say to things any plans yet for the next royal orc session on the discord?
28:49.904 --> 28:52.425
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so we run them quarterly.
28:52.485 --> 28:54.606
[SPEAKER_01]: So the last one was the middle of June.
28:54.906 --> 28:57.968
[SPEAKER_01]: So the next one will be the middle of September.
28:58.728 --> 29:01.069
[SPEAKER_01]: What we haven't, what we didn't do the last one.
29:01.089 --> 29:01.569
[SPEAKER_01]: It was nice.
29:01.609 --> 29:02.890
[SPEAKER_01]: It was just a kind of casual catch-up.
29:03.010 --> 29:06.111
[SPEAKER_01]: It was one of the days where it was like 40 degrees or something insane.
29:06.551 --> 29:07.831
[SPEAKER_01]: So everyone was a bit frazzled.
29:08.252 --> 29:10.512
[SPEAKER_01]: So it was good, but it was just a kind of chat.
29:10.852 --> 29:13.313
[SPEAKER_01]: But the set 10-1 would be really nice to do something like this.
29:13.333 --> 29:24.996
[SPEAKER_01]: If anyone's got any ideas, like a game they could run, we've done like David did a, we'll have my characters map to up, Edston, Dungeon, Crawl, I did a nightmare, cheese-y-ray and adventure book thing.
29:25.336 --> 29:31.418
[SPEAKER_01]: So we've done quizzes, anyone's got something they want to run, just drop a line on the discord and we'll do it.
29:32.318 --> 29:36.642
[SPEAKER_01]: And the idea, oh Jason did a terrain challenge thing this time last year.
29:36.702 --> 29:48.733
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, if anyone's got any ideas, get in touch it, it'll be the middle of September and anyone who's new to the discord or new to the community or never bid on one of the Royal Lock things, it's just a very light casual catch-up.
29:49.374 --> 29:58.805
[SPEAKER_01]: 7 till 9 o'clock UK time, one evening in the week mid September, and they weren't really well, and it's really nice just to get to know people.
29:59.126 --> 30:02.350
[SPEAKER_01]: They've been really good as well in advance of live events.
30:02.690 --> 30:06.375
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll have some photos from the Boyle Githing as well, which would be nice.
30:08.697 --> 30:12.922
[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks very much for listening to this episode of the table top miniature hobby podcast.
30:13.482 --> 30:17.587
[SPEAKER_00]: If you enjoy the show then please do share it with someone else you think might enjoy it too.
30:18.328 --> 30:26.256
[SPEAKER_00]: And be sure to check out our discord community of like-minded hobbyists which you could find at BedroomBattlefield.com forward slash discord.
30:26.697 --> 30:27.938
[SPEAKER_00]: I'd be great to see you in there.
00:00.858 --> 00:03.228
[SPEAKER_00]: brought to you by BedroomBattleField.com.
00:03.469 --> 00:06.161
[SPEAKER_00]: This is the table top miniature movie podcast.
00:15.572 --> 00:29.586
[SPEAKER_00]: In the table top miniature war game in Hobbie, an imagination is a fictional country, army, or faction invented by a hobbyist and usually set in a real historical period but detached from actual history.
00:30.207 --> 00:39.576
[SPEAKER_00]: Rather than recreate in a real nation's army, a hobbyist creates an imaginary state with its own flags, uniforms, heraldry, rulers,
00:40.076 --> 00:47.840
[SPEAKER_00]: and often a whimsical or satirical backstory and then builds paints in games with miniature armies represented.
00:48.700 --> 01:03.526
[SPEAKER_00]: I found that definition of imaginations wargaming and thought it would lead us nicely into this conversation with Mark, who hosted an imaginations game in the earlier this month in Newbury, so he is now to tell us all about it.
01:04.067 --> 01:05.807
[SPEAKER_01]: It's probably knocking on the door like seven
01:09.892 --> 01:19.637
[SPEAKER_01]: About four or five years ago, I was just looking around at other things that people were doing, especially looking at blogs from war gamers.
01:19.657 --> 01:34.565
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, most of whom were a bit older than me, but doing things that were just kind of just a bit different, and sort of like on the back of the old hammer thing, but then also drifting into seeing stuff that people were doing that was really, really like proper old school war gaming stuff like,
01:35.145 --> 01:48.455
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, from the 50s and the 60s and there was sort of doing that in revival and kind of bringing it back and the thing that I really kind of liked about it is there's a lot of this appetite for doing, you know, what some people call imaginations stuff.
01:48.475 --> 01:51.817
[SPEAKER_01]: So taking a kind of historical flavored
01:52.660 --> 02:02.583
[SPEAKER_01]: set up and set of miniatures and telling a story with, you know, made up names of these little microenations, normally juking it out.
02:02.883 --> 02:16.787
[SPEAKER_01]: So very much like the sort of background setting in things like the prisoners in, uh, with rural retainer and having these kind of imaginary settings and worlds to kind of allow people, I suppose, that flexibility to do whatever they wanted.
02:17.467 --> 02:20.248
[SPEAKER_01]: And there was a bit of that going on, I was thinking, that's pretty cool.
02:20.388 --> 02:21.888
[SPEAKER_01]: I could imagine doing something with that.
02:22.415 --> 02:34.284
[SPEAKER_01]: Because I think the idea of doing something straight up historical perhaps wasn't something I was kind of immediately into, but the idea of that kind of a Jason way of doing it felt pretty interesting and accessible.
02:34.924 --> 02:47.854
[SPEAKER_01]: And what I really liked about it was just the very nature of the fact that because it's because it's made up and it's all imaginary, it's kind of anything goes in terms of what you how you want to run the game and what you might want to do and so on.
02:48.523 --> 02:51.545
[SPEAKER_01]: So that was kind of there as a bit of a, a bit of a seed.
02:51.725 --> 03:02.232
[SPEAKER_01]: And then alongside that, I always had an interesting sort of a passing ingest in the sort of kind of cool sort of Victorian sci-fi slightly steamed punky sort of stuff.
03:02.572 --> 03:09.056
[SPEAKER_01]: That always kind of interested me, especially a say steamed punk, but more like, you know, classic jewels learn and things like that.
03:09.456 --> 03:11.898
[SPEAKER_01]: So those things were there bubbling away in my mind.
03:12.258 --> 03:13.299
[SPEAKER_01]: And then I watched
03:13.879 --> 03:22.534
[SPEAKER_01]: Probably for about the fourth or fifth time I'd watched it, but the studio jibbly has moving capital adaptation in which there's kind of this
03:23.522 --> 03:35.814
[SPEAKER_01]: which suddenly it's not really in the novel so much, but something that's quite prominent in the film is all these soldiers and this war going on and these airships and I was just thinking yeah this is kind of why I want to base it all up.
03:36.155 --> 03:42.801
[SPEAKER_01]: So it was all those different ingredients all coming together in a bit of an opportunity to think yeah this is kind of crystallising
03:46.361 --> 03:53.728
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, Alan and Michael Perry, Perry Miniatures, they had put in together a range of Franco Prussian War figures.
03:53.788 --> 03:57.451
[SPEAKER_01]: So Franco Prussian War was in like 1871 or something like that.
03:58.011 --> 03:59.633
[SPEAKER_01]: And there was French and Russian figures.
03:59.653 --> 04:01.134
[SPEAKER_01]: They were releasing plastic ones.
04:01.777 --> 04:16.757
[SPEAKER_01]: and the French ones look absolutely the same as the way that in the studio, did we film the troops of the country, Ingrid, where it's set, look like, and it's kind of set at that sort of eight, late 19th century time.
04:17.337 --> 04:22.060
[SPEAKER_01]: although there is a magic in this sort of steam invention and so on.
04:22.561 --> 04:33.728
[SPEAKER_01]: So it felt like it was all these things coming together and so I started buying up these boxes of pairing in it, which is then started looking at other things from the 19th century and like all I have a little bit of this a little bit of that.
04:33.788 --> 04:37.130
[SPEAKER_01]: Anything with the bright colored colourful uniforms and so on.
04:37.150 --> 04:39.712
[SPEAKER_01]: So I put together all this army.
04:40.432 --> 05:06.242
05:10.553 --> 05:14.559
[SPEAKER_01]: And so a few months ago, I just put out on the discord.
05:14.579 --> 05:16.702
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, does anyone want to play this game?
05:17.083 --> 05:21.449
[SPEAKER_01]: And if you do, I'll put on, I'll get a venue, I'll bring all the stuff, I'll host it.
05:22.090 --> 05:23.953
[SPEAKER_01]: And the response was really positive.
05:24.353 --> 05:26.697
[SPEAKER_01]: Those of people come back to say, yeah, that looks pretty good.
05:27.857 --> 05:30.419
[SPEAKER_01]: And we were able to arrange and carve out a date.
05:30.619 --> 05:33.220
[SPEAKER_01]: So this Sunday just gone, we did that.
05:33.540 --> 05:40.944
[SPEAKER_01]: It actually held it very close to a JSON live because actually the people who were interested most of them were in the south of England, so that was ideal for people to get to.
05:41.524 --> 05:45.466
[SPEAKER_01]: It was a lovely sunny day, Jason Hyde, this really lovely Victorian village hall.
05:46.086 --> 06:10.005
06:10.605 --> 06:23.073
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's kind of getting me thinking of about going a bit full circle and writing some kind of blog post or some ask of about it because it's those blogs and those articles that inspired me to do it in the first place, but yeah, it was great.
06:29.487 --> 06:31.669
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, if I'd test it, he's a massive proponent.
06:31.909 --> 06:32.209
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
06:32.750 --> 06:41.296
[SPEAKER_01]: I know he, um, he's a massive fan of, um, Charles Grant, the, um, one of the very sort of forefathers of war gaming.
06:41.717 --> 06:45.820
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that Charles Grant stuff, um, that's very much rooted in that.
06:45.860 --> 06:49.883
[SPEAKER_01]: So there's these sort of two imaginary nations that have a red army in a blue army that
06:50.646 --> 06:56.750
[SPEAKER_01]: that he used as his kind of like when he was setting out his rules to illustrate how the rules work.
06:56.870 --> 06:58.571
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, Henry's really carried that on.
06:58.911 --> 07:07.816
[SPEAKER_01]: And actually, Henry's two big books, the compendium and the war games campaigns books have been really inspirational to me as well for it.
07:07.856 --> 07:10.337
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Henry's like super into it.
07:10.478 --> 07:12.899
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, the stuff he's done is amazing.
07:14.112 --> 07:41.270
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and speaking of the day that you put on like you mentioned Johnny Watson's daughter and just before we go on here I just watched the video we'd put up done at a really good video of the day Yeah, and the desk all so definitely put that in the show notes for the lesson or two That was a great way pecan everything that sort of went on Yeah, one thing I quite liked about I didn't realize it was filming it, but you felt like I did a lot of sort of stories of introduction to it
07:42.086 --> 07:55.523
[SPEAKER_01]: And what's strange is I was planning on giving a little bit of context and then just getting into the game, but my main thoughts that I was driving there was I need to explain the rules and so on, but because Johnny brought his daughter along.
07:56.961 --> 08:06.170
[SPEAKER_01]: I sort of instantly slipped into the into a kind of mode as I would have done with my kid to a younger, a sort of thinking or almost a kind of a bit of a role play.
08:06.190 --> 08:07.872
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's tell the story kind of a mode.
08:08.372 --> 08:11.635
[SPEAKER_01]: And actually, I think that that's something that people have commented that they liked.
08:11.755 --> 08:13.918
[SPEAKER_01]: They liked knowing what the story of the game was.
08:14.718 --> 08:20.603
[SPEAKER_01]: and taking that out of my mind and putting it into people's mind so they felt like they knew what they were playing for.
08:20.623 --> 08:23.185
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that really added something to it.
08:23.205 --> 08:24.746
[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't something I was really planning to do.
08:24.826 --> 08:29.831
[SPEAKER_01]: So actually Johnny having his daughter there really inspired me to sort of go, how would a kid want to know about it?
08:29.871 --> 08:30.091
[SPEAKER_01]: Why?
08:30.131 --> 08:33.614
[SPEAKER_01]: They'd want to know why we're doing this rather than all the technicalities.
08:34.394 --> 08:51.693
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, is it plus two for a list or minus one but that modifier they just want to know what we're doing and why so that was great That she came along and I'm really glad that John is put that in the video because let's a bit embarrassing I quite like the fact that that was a moment that I think probably made it a little bit of a different kind of a day, which is good
08:52.483 --> 08:56.986
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, it's not like she was the only kid in the room yet that Jason Ed did as well.
08:57.066 --> 08:59.568
[SPEAKER_00]: So I see her and I didn't cap to be it.
09:01.870 --> 09:05.733
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that her all kids for the day, it felt really nice actually in that respect.
09:06.093 --> 09:14.139
[SPEAKER_01]: And actually Rob Dean put a comment on the discord the other day saying, Oh, it's great to see a load of people playing such old school wall gaming.
09:14.199 --> 09:16.241
[SPEAKER_01]: And all of you look considerably younger than me.
09:16.701 --> 09:33.344
[SPEAKER_01]: but actually it felt very sort of timeless and ageless in terms of a way of playing a game, which I think was something it worked really well, because we had from Johnny's daughter up to Martin, who's retired and he joined in and it felt like everyone was kind of on the same page.
09:35.171 --> 09:44.816
[SPEAKER_00]: Talk us through then like the game and you know I've seen bits and pieces on the discord about people comment on particular little fun mechanics and stuff like that.
09:45.177 --> 09:49.639
[SPEAKER_00]: So what actually was going on on the table and and how did you kind of work at all.
09:50.760 --> 09:55.602
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so what I did I chose to use as a sort of set of rules.
09:57.613 --> 09:59.334
[SPEAKER_01]: It's called Rebels and Patriots.
09:59.414 --> 10:01.254
[SPEAKER_01]: It's by Daniel Mersey and Michael Leck.
10:01.354 --> 10:05.756
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's in the same series as the Rampad Games, Dragon Rampad Lion Rampad and so on.
10:06.096 --> 10:15.520
[SPEAKER_01]: It uses very similar mechanics to those games, but it's designed and aimed at like 19th century America, War of Independence.
10:16.020 --> 10:17.321
[SPEAKER_01]: civil war, that kind of era.
10:17.742 --> 10:24.889
[SPEAKER_01]: But the reality is it was really universal and it worked well for what I was doing and it was kind of appropriate.
10:25.109 --> 10:31.335
[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't too futuristic or too to okay, it kind of hit that sort of 19th century vibe well.
10:31.795 --> 10:35.259
[SPEAKER_01]: So I used that as a set of rules, but mainly because it's quite light and quite easy.
10:35.877 --> 10:39.242
[SPEAKER_01]: But I did some different things in terms of actually setting the game up.
10:39.342 --> 10:43.668
[SPEAKER_01]: So when people came in, I gave them a little briefing and then I handed that little card.
10:43.808 --> 10:52.320
[SPEAKER_01]: And on those cards, what was an officer's name, and a flag for which side they were on, and also a special ability sort of trait thing.
10:52.800 --> 11:01.543
[SPEAKER_01]: that they could maybe use once they're game like a little bonus or above, but then I sent them off to go to tables and on the tables I'd set up the units that I'd brought.
11:02.023 --> 11:11.907
[SPEAKER_01]: So although there's a point system in the game and you can not very much like I say Hobgoblin or whatever it might be, it's a kind of archetypes type unit building, certain things.
11:11.927 --> 11:17.769
[SPEAKER_01]: So you go, I'll have a unit of shock infantry and I'll make them veteran and there you go, that's the point.
11:18.149 --> 11:18.589
[SPEAKER_01]: But I've already
11:21.150 --> 11:26.314
[SPEAKER_01]: So roughly using the points this and tried to make them all each unit kind of about equal.
11:26.694 --> 11:38.562
[SPEAKER_01]: So there was some units of cavalry, there was some units of different types of artillery, some units of various infantry, all on table, and it was just each player was told, right, game one, you can have five units each.
11:38.802 --> 11:45.887
[SPEAKER_01]: So some people just chose, I think, because they just, oh, I like the red ones, I like the red ones, and there was a appropriate unit card to go with each one.
11:45.907 --> 11:47.248
[SPEAKER_01]: So those unit cards are really quite
11:47.728 --> 11:54.489
[SPEAKER_01]: useful actually because they condense the rules into a sort of format that they could just have as a great reference for that unit.
11:55.249 --> 12:00.570
[SPEAKER_01]: And it also made the draft sort of almost like a draft if you like so people were just going up to the table and just choosing.
12:00.911 --> 12:06.572
[SPEAKER_01]: I think some people make quite arbitrary decisions and some people make different decisions based on what they liked.
12:07.272 --> 12:12.753
[SPEAKER_01]: One thing that was quite cool is on the team that Edrason, which was the defending team, the
12:14.293 --> 12:28.223
[SPEAKER_01]: The one that had deployment rules for the first game, which he didn't realize at the time was any light infantry or skirmishes can deploy later in the game and kind of come on pop out of places, pop out buildings, pop out of woods, whatever it might be.
12:28.263 --> 12:29.845
[SPEAKER_01]: So Ed decided, oh, do you know what?
12:29.945 --> 12:39.752
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll have all of those units and he played in that way where he could kind of deploy them as he wanted while, meanwhile, Johnny and Jason were deployed at the start of the game.
12:40.279 --> 12:41.099
[SPEAKER_01]: So that was really nice.
12:41.159 --> 12:44.261
[SPEAKER_01]: It was really emergent and it didn't seem to complicate it.
12:44.761 --> 12:45.762
[SPEAKER_01]: So the rules are there.
12:45.822 --> 12:49.904
[SPEAKER_01]: I gave everyone quick reference sheets, but and I didn't play myself.
12:49.964 --> 12:52.525
[SPEAKER_01]: So I was able to kind of guide people through it and so on.
12:53.026 --> 12:57.328
[SPEAKER_01]: Martin, who joined us as well, has got some familiarity with those rampant rules.
12:58.188 --> 13:03.212
[SPEAKER_01]: I know he's obviously a big DBA player and he knows his stuff inside that.
13:03.472 --> 13:06.755
[SPEAKER_01]: So he's great having him on board because he was really good at picking up all of you.
13:06.795 --> 13:09.076
[SPEAKER_01]: Sure on this, he's on that and so forth.
13:09.236 --> 13:12.479
[SPEAKER_01]: And the first few turns we did it where it was quite sequential.
13:12.519 --> 13:15.000
[SPEAKER_01]: So we had three players on the side.
13:15.201 --> 13:18.143
[SPEAKER_01]: So we're one, two, three, okay, that turn over.
13:18.283 --> 13:19.784
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the next team, one, two, three.
13:20.264 --> 13:28.231
[SPEAKER_01]: But then after a couple of turns, it started becoming more continuous where people would go, well, I'll do mine now, people picking up the rules and getting clarity on that.
13:28.691 --> 13:33.395
[SPEAKER_01]: But I mean, meanwhile, we've dropped a few rules, we've forgotten a few things, but nothing consequential.
13:33.935 --> 13:36.517
[SPEAKER_01]: And actually, it rattled along really nicely.
13:36.638 --> 13:40.140
[SPEAKER_01]: And what happened is we managed to get through two games in an afternoon.
13:40.260 --> 13:45.925
[SPEAKER_01]: So we started about one, we wrapped up by about quarter six, and we got two full games done.
13:46.245 --> 13:47.526
[SPEAKER_01]: And it worked really well.
13:47.606 --> 13:49.368
[SPEAKER_01]: So from that perspective,
13:49.888 --> 13:56.950
[SPEAKER_01]: They actually kind of mechanisms and the rules that propelled the day were good, but enough that I thought, yeah, that all worked well.
13:57.250 --> 14:00.751
[SPEAKER_01]: And then in terms of the kind of quirky things, they were introduced in game two.
14:01.292 --> 14:08.714
[SPEAKER_01]: So unfortunately, Johnny and his daughter didn't get season these, because they say for the first game that then had to head back, but in game two, we brought in some extra stuff.
14:08.734 --> 14:11.975
[SPEAKER_01]: So on the injury side, they had access to some magic.
14:12.755 --> 14:35.108
14:35.428 --> 14:36.168
[SPEAKER_01]: There was introduced,
14:41.611 --> 14:43.452
[SPEAKER_01]: And it was great because everyone used those.
14:43.972 --> 14:56.395
[SPEAKER_01]: We didn't really get a spells cast because I came up with this very complicated way of casting the spells, which didn't prevent them, but it was more that I think I just made it a bit too difficult to get the spells off in terms of the target numbers.
14:56.955 --> 15:06.198
[SPEAKER_01]: But all of that stuff, I think, added quite a lot of flavour, but what people quite enjoyed is it was all introduced, like they didn't know those things were going to be available.
15:06.800 --> 15:17.926
[SPEAKER_01]: So, for example, with the aerial, you know, the airborne troops with the parachute, it was just said you can drop two troops in by parachute and then ask them, I don't know, let's blame how to do it.
15:18.266 --> 15:28.671
[SPEAKER_01]: So at the point that Stuart decided he wanted to do that, I then gave him a piece of paper with some templates on the pair of scissors, and he had to cut out things, but you know that you can make that little worldly gig,
15:29.652 --> 15:32.714
[SPEAKER_01]: paper helicopters that fall like sick and more seeds.
15:33.134 --> 15:37.878
[SPEAKER_01]: So the idea was he had to make those throw them on the table and they will band a Monday where they did.
15:37.918 --> 15:45.443
[SPEAKER_01]: And it was really good because people really enjoyed that kind of slightly chaotic slightly emergent gameplay.
15:45.623 --> 15:49.446
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think those, they were nice surprises that I had sort of in store.
15:49.886 --> 15:51.147
[SPEAKER_01]: But another thing that was great is I
15:55.350 --> 15:57.811
[SPEAKER_01]: Just a few days before it took, can I go through these things with you?
15:58.251 --> 16:03.394
[SPEAKER_01]: I really want to start to someone who wasn't going to be there on the day, just to see what do you reckon, do you think it would work?
16:03.854 --> 16:16.881
[SPEAKER_01]: And he was great, because he really gave me some good suggestions, and I think it was really nice to see that payoff, that surprise element, that I think that maybe war games are quite, you know, you've got these big heavy books, and you've got all the rules, you've got this information.
16:17.341 --> 16:18.883
[SPEAKER_01]: and it was actually really nice to have.
16:19.284 --> 16:20.726
[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't just the roles of the dice.
16:20.746 --> 16:24.070
[SPEAKER_01]: There was also a lot of elements that people perhaps didn't expect.
16:24.591 --> 16:30.278
[SPEAKER_01]: But by being the games master, I was able to control those and introduce them and yeah, I think that they went down really well actually.
16:30.298 --> 16:31.119
[SPEAKER_01]: I was really happy with it.
16:32.001 --> 16:33.443
[SPEAKER_01]: Did the best get school down for ill?
16:34.340 --> 16:55.543
16:56.147 --> 17:04.810
[SPEAKER_01]: and those sort of vinyl plough and we've got these windmills and little farms and it all look very cute, see a nice bright colored character.
17:04.850 --> 17:12.572
[SPEAKER_01]: So it was absolutely not grim dark but the multi notes were definitely on brand and yeah, the disc is always with.
17:13.257 --> 17:17.339
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, talking about the sort of colors and vibrancy as well.
17:17.479 --> 17:20.060
[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's what you said, attraction to animal.
17:20.100 --> 17:32.684
[SPEAKER_00]: I know it's not a period of such, but you know, that kind of 19th century uniform, where it was like, we want to be seen in short rather than who wants to hide and survive.
17:32.724 --> 17:38.166
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was really nice, actually, to seal the stuff out in the table and see the bright colors.
17:41.335 --> 17:49.699
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it didn't look realistic, it didn't look diorama-like, but what it did look is it looked really evocative and it looked really fun.
17:50.159 --> 17:55.121
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that that building little worlds and creating little kind of placecapes.
17:55.958 --> 18:19.010
[SPEAKER_01]: is something that's, you know, it's quite inherently kind of calls back to being quite young and it had that sort of shiny to its old divide but bad it and that I was really pleased with that actually just to see like you say the red coats and the zawaves in their bright colored feathers and their billowing like pantaloons and you know it's all very over the top very pomp and ceremony and it really kind of
18:19.638 --> 18:20.699
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it really set it off.
18:21.019 --> 18:38.169
18:38.229 --> 18:43.552
[SPEAKER_01]: I really like the realism as well that people have in their world gaming, but, yeah, it was just something about it that felt really
18:44.152 --> 18:46.515
[SPEAKER_01]: Really old school and really kind of woman.
18:46.815 --> 18:51.481
[SPEAKER_01]: It was really nice to be on a sunny day as well And that sounds silly but everything looked really good as a result.
18:52.101 --> 18:57.187
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you were almost each D wears out in the garden Didn't let a worse probably got the weather.
18:57.207 --> 18:58.509
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, maybe hide up.
18:58.549 --> 18:59.450
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah
19:00.473 --> 19:07.074
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I mean, it's interesting, it was the week after Jeff over at Odebrand had his, um, the woods in the woods.
19:07.555 --> 19:08.955
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I'll look for Odebrand.
19:08.995 --> 19:11.015
[SPEAKER_01]: I've never been to, but I'd like to.
19:11.255 --> 19:12.736
[SPEAKER_01]: And it just looks amazing.
19:12.756 --> 19:19.137
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, if you're going to play a game about a little Bay creatures out in the woods, actually do it in the woods, it's perfect.
19:19.677 --> 19:21.817
[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, you write that, that actually world's thing.
19:21.838 --> 19:22.938
[SPEAKER_01]: That's the next step, isn't it?
19:22.958 --> 19:25.558
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to do an actual, uh, a garden game.
19:25.818 --> 19:28.139
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think it also made me think about how
19:29.495 --> 19:54.550
19:55.482 --> 19:58.064
[SPEAKER_00]: It must have been a pretty big pink project for you.
19:59.364 --> 20:02.866
[SPEAKER_01]: It was, but weirdly, it didn't take that long.
20:03.006 --> 20:08.770
[SPEAKER_01]: So I got most of it done in about six months, which sounds crazy, and does that show numbers of models.
20:09.424 --> 20:11.466
[SPEAKER_01]: But what I did is a really simple approach.
20:11.506 --> 20:14.248
[SPEAKER_01]: So just let there's no highlights or anything like that.
20:14.268 --> 20:18.112
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just a few base colors and then a really light army painter wash.
20:18.592 --> 20:20.814
[SPEAKER_01]: But the mass effect of it is really good.
20:21.214 --> 20:24.417
[SPEAKER_01]: If you look at each figure, they're not that crisp at all.
20:24.437 --> 20:25.618
[SPEAKER_01]: They're quite basic.
20:26.179 --> 20:27.920
[SPEAKER_01]: But I've bolted based everything.
20:27.940 --> 20:33.045
[SPEAKER_01]: So there's six figures on a sort of 50 x 60 mil square base or rectangular lace.
20:33.485 --> 20:34.386
[SPEAKER_01]: So they're quite packed in.
20:35.275 --> 20:37.017
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's got to advantages.
20:37.117 --> 20:44.666
[SPEAKER_01]: One, it's not that much stuff to carry, but also it just really looks kind of like you just see the unit rather than the individual characters.
20:45.106 --> 20:46.347
[SPEAKER_01]: So it was a biggest job.
20:46.788 --> 20:52.074
[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of strange because I've got more stuff to paint that I want to do, but it's kind of.
20:52.514 --> 21:05.747
[SPEAKER_01]: I think I had that run two years ago where I got loads done and I don't I think two years ago was the year that we didn't have such insane me hot summer for whatever reason and I just was using the mornings when it was light just the pain.
21:06.147 --> 21:16.017
[SPEAKER_01]: So getting up early and just painting before I go to work and I got through loads by doing that you know just sort of 30 minutes every single morning and that's kind of how I cracked it.
21:16.497 --> 21:19.799
[SPEAKER_01]: But after the end of it, I kind of burned myself out a bit, really.
21:20.299 --> 21:24.822
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the next year I did all the wood elves and stuff, so that was great, but again, yeah.
21:25.102 --> 21:31.726
[SPEAKER_01]: And I've really slumped in my painting with us a few months, but I'm kind of saying to myself, there's no point in worrying about that.
21:31.746 --> 21:35.228
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I've got years left, and I haven't got any space.
21:35.790 --> 21:37.751
[SPEAKER_01]: So buying more stuff is a terrible idea.
21:37.771 --> 21:39.772
[SPEAKER_01]: I just need to kind of get through and paint what I've got.
21:39.812 --> 21:43.893
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's, but that day, running it on Sunday, it's maybe go, do you know what?
21:43.933 --> 21:45.714
[SPEAKER_01]: We did loads with this.
21:45.814 --> 21:48.395
[SPEAKER_01]: Two scenarios that worked really well.
21:48.495 --> 21:49.075
[SPEAKER_01]: Quite simple.
21:49.155 --> 21:55.038
[SPEAKER_01]: One was just to kind of go and get some objectives, a scap and locations, type one, very ordinary.
21:55.078 --> 21:56.078
[SPEAKER_01]: But it worked well.
21:56.378 --> 21:58.539
[SPEAKER_01]: And the other one was across the bridge, type one.
21:58.559 --> 21:59.800
[SPEAKER_01]: So it was a river down the middle.
22:00.240 --> 22:02.561
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the attackers had to get a unit across the bridge.
22:03.061 --> 22:20.489
22:20.809 --> 22:26.972
[SPEAKER_01]: Plus, I mean, I think the other side of it is it was just really nice just to spend the afternoon just chatting and just kind of spending time together and
22:27.617 --> 22:35.665
[SPEAKER_01]: when Jason's running this big bring out, you know, knock off tribute, whatever you want to call it in the start of August.
22:35.765 --> 22:39.268
[SPEAKER_01]: That's what I'm mainly looking forward to, it's just going there and just catching up with people in.
22:39.969 --> 22:44.553
[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, there was some new people that came along to the event on Sunday, other people I'd met before.
22:44.893 --> 22:46.375
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just really nice just to kind of
22:47.070 --> 23:06.046
23:07.167 --> 23:09.829
[SPEAKER_00]: What was the response like from the folks at when?
23:11.484 --> 23:12.465
[SPEAKER_01]: really good actually.
23:12.665 --> 23:19.630
[SPEAKER_01]: I asked for some feedback and actually people would be really complimentary about a couple of things.
23:19.911 --> 23:27.636
[SPEAKER_01]: People really enjoyed those sort of emerging things and they enjoyed how they were kind of, they described something that I wanted to achieve.
23:27.736 --> 23:36.163
[SPEAKER_01]: I did think quite hard about was making sure they got drip at the rules in a way that was manageable and they understood what they were doing and they didn't get too much cognitive load and I think
23:39.245 --> 23:49.999
[SPEAKER_01]: Tables with the armies on and they could go and choose what they wanted the units But also meant they could have a little team talk together So the big village home, they could do that either and that was good.
23:50.500 --> 23:52.983
[SPEAKER_01]: I think the other thing that people really liked was the
23:55.498 --> 24:02.066
[SPEAKER_01]: the right balance of a sort of historical, historically plausible scenario.
24:02.087 --> 24:10.878
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, they weren't crazy and full of chaos, but there was enough little bits of fun in things in there like the magic or whatever it might be.
24:10.938 --> 24:12.641
[SPEAKER_01]: Just to introduce those fun elements.
24:13.738 --> 24:20.523
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that the everyone got on really well, which is lovely, but in testament to how everyone conducted themselves.
24:20.904 --> 24:23.545
[SPEAKER_01]: But also it was, I think that was the other thing.
24:23.585 --> 24:24.886
[SPEAKER_01]: It was a great bit of feedback to people.
24:24.906 --> 24:26.447
[SPEAKER_01]: I actually just really enjoyed the day out.
24:26.808 --> 24:29.490
[SPEAKER_01]: I like Johnny's daughter, for example, really, really liked it.
24:29.670 --> 24:32.412
[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, actually, not overall wood.
24:32.432 --> 24:33.913
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think the reason she enjoyed it was
24:34.783 --> 24:36.925
[SPEAKER_01]: because he was really involving her, which is great.
24:37.345 --> 24:43.130
[SPEAKER_01]: But also just like everyone treated her really high levels of respect, you know, it was really nice to have her there.
24:43.150 --> 24:45.992
[SPEAKER_01]: I think we were all delighted that some of her brought their child along.
24:46.052 --> 24:50.776
[SPEAKER_01]: So that, that, it felt really properly inclusive in a really genuine way, which is great.
24:52.097 --> 24:56.180
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it be next up for you the, the Boyle Gets event that you talked about there.
24:57.213 --> 25:00.295
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so that's the next thing I'm going to, which I'm really looking forward to.
25:00.316 --> 25:14.587
[SPEAKER_01]: So I said, you bet three weeks away or something like that, which I'm sure Jason's absolutely panicking because he's got to make loads of stuff, loads of terrain is actually, you give me a sneak peek preview or a silver one today on there on his little WhatsApp group, these
25:22.096 --> 25:29.101
[SPEAKER_01]: dwarven fortress being embedded into the side of, I think he's not done it 28 NL scale.
25:29.121 --> 25:33.703
[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's actually done it one to one scale and he's built a mountain in his shed.
25:34.124 --> 25:37.806
[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's probably going to have to remove his shed to remove the mountain.
25:38.806 --> 25:44.550
[SPEAKER_01]: I get one of those police escorts to drive that up to nothing and where to drive over the center of the roundabout.
25:45.690 --> 26:08.982
26:09.542 --> 26:12.503
[SPEAKER_01]: That was the last thing bigger thing that I went to.
26:13.043 --> 26:19.024
[SPEAKER_01]: And so, yeah, it feels like, um, didn't load to the moment we're gaming and meeting up with people and stuff like that.
26:19.104 --> 26:19.744
[SPEAKER_01]: It's been great.
26:19.924 --> 26:28.025
[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, and, um, there's a Xenos rampant game going, uh, day going on near me, uh, at the end of August, uh, that I'm looking forward to going to.
26:28.345 --> 26:29.726
[SPEAKER_01]: It Martin's coming up to that as well.
26:29.746 --> 26:32.246
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a mall at Martin's in Coventures, running that one.
26:32.786 --> 26:35.747
[SPEAKER_01]: So, um, yeah, I'm Coccahute, but those are stuff to do.
26:35.847 --> 26:36.887
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm more than happy.
26:37.227 --> 26:44.981
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you're getting out there, getting games, but that's what it's all about, like especially when you went through that period of prep and loads of paint and stuff.
26:45.021 --> 26:49.810
[SPEAKER_00]: It's nice to be able to gain this meltdown roses with all one just rolls on dice, isn't it?
26:50.695 --> 26:51.636
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's true.
26:51.816 --> 26:52.477
[SPEAKER_01]: It really is true.
26:52.517 --> 27:08.470
[SPEAKER_01]: I think the other thing as well is not to say that like when my kids were younger it was I couldn't do stuff but it was less easy and actually I'm kind of really reaping the benefit of the fact that they are now a bit older and yes on one hand they don't want to play games with me when they did before.
27:09.250 --> 27:18.458
[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't get that game time at home as much as I do, but like it's easier to kind of go out and do things, but yeah that preparation and seeing stuff come together.
27:19.260 --> 27:26.920
[SPEAKER_01]: it's it's really nice and it's a really strong antidote to the kind of dopamine driven
27:27.950 --> 27:36.055
[SPEAKER_01]: instant gratification culture that even if you don't want to be part of it, the world is so so engineered to be that way at the moment.
27:36.455 --> 27:41.819
[SPEAKER_01]: It's really hard to avoid it and just to do some real life actual things is really lovely.
27:42.499 --> 27:46.381
[SPEAKER_01]: And you're just fine to self, you're your phones are
27:50.824 --> 27:56.691
[SPEAKER_01]: It was just taking time to do some of those really practical and really old school and really real.
27:57.252 --> 28:04.821
[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, not in some kind of weird pseudo nostalgia thing where you're like, oh, yeah, let's pretend for a while the world doesn't as it is.
28:05.162 --> 28:07.785
[SPEAKER_01]: That's actually more like, no, this is actually how it can be.
28:07.825 --> 28:09.807
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, that you can have hobbies that are like this.
28:11.048 --> 28:25.116
[SPEAKER_01]: of practical and analog, and they have a real place in the real world, and actually the digital connection and connectivity from the ecological, social, media, or however you want to label it, you know, the online communities.
28:25.496 --> 28:28.377
[SPEAKER_01]: They are like the enzymes that's making it all happen.
28:28.798 --> 28:31.499
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's kind of this best of both worlds thing, actually.
28:31.799 --> 28:33.960
[SPEAKER_01]: You've got that online connectivity,
28:39.680 --> 28:41.261
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's incredibly rich.
28:42.221 --> 28:48.644
[SPEAKER_00]: Speaking of the online say to things any plans yet for the next royal orc session on the discord?
28:49.904 --> 28:52.425
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so we run them quarterly.
28:52.485 --> 28:54.606
[SPEAKER_01]: So the last one was the middle of June.
28:54.906 --> 28:57.968
[SPEAKER_01]: So the next one will be the middle of September.
28:58.728 --> 29:01.069
[SPEAKER_01]: What we haven't, what we didn't do the last one.
29:01.089 --> 29:01.569
[SPEAKER_01]: It was nice.
29:01.609 --> 29:02.890
[SPEAKER_01]: It was just a kind of casual catch-up.
29:03.010 --> 29:06.111
[SPEAKER_01]: It was one of the days where it was like 40 degrees or something insane.
29:06.551 --> 29:07.831
[SPEAKER_01]: So everyone was a bit frazzled.
29:08.252 --> 29:10.512
[SPEAKER_01]: So it was good, but it was just a kind of chat.
29:10.852 --> 29:13.313
[SPEAKER_01]: But the set 10-1 would be really nice to do something like this.
29:13.333 --> 29:24.996
[SPEAKER_01]: If anyone's got any ideas, like a game they could run, we've done like David did a, we'll have my characters map to up, Edston, Dungeon, Crawl, I did a nightmare, cheese-y-ray and adventure book thing.
29:25.336 --> 29:31.418
[SPEAKER_01]: So we've done quizzes, anyone's got something they want to run, just drop a line on the discord and we'll do it.
29:32.318 --> 29:36.642
[SPEAKER_01]: And the idea, oh Jason did a terrain challenge thing this time last year.
29:36.702 --> 29:48.733
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, if anyone's got any ideas, get in touch it, it'll be the middle of September and anyone who's new to the discord or new to the community or never bid on one of the Royal Lock things, it's just a very light casual catch-up.
29:49.374 --> 29:58.805
[SPEAKER_01]: 7 till 9 o'clock UK time, one evening in the week mid September, and they weren't really well, and it's really nice just to get to know people.
29:59.126 --> 30:02.350
[SPEAKER_01]: They've been really good as well in advance of live events.
30:02.690 --> 30:06.375
