00:00:04.080 --> 00:00:11.039
Huss Studios. The first thing Malcolm Reed noticed about the
2
00:00:11.119 --> 00:00:15.839
gardens at Ashworth Hall was that they were wrong. Not
3
00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:19.879
wrong in the way a neglected garden goes wrong, Weeds
4
00:00:20.039 --> 00:00:24.839
choking the borders, roses straggling over the paths, the slow
5
00:00:24.960 --> 00:00:31.239
green riot of abandonment. These gardens were immaculate. Every hedge
6
00:00:31.399 --> 00:00:37.000
was clipped to geometric perfection. Every bed was mulched with dark,
7
00:00:37.240 --> 00:00:42.240
fragrant bark. The gravel paths were raked smooth as silk.
8
00:00:43.960 --> 00:00:47.679
If anything, the gardens were too perfect, the way a
9
00:00:47.759 --> 00:00:51.640
stage set is too perfect, designed to be looked at,
10
00:00:52.039 --> 00:00:55.320
not lived in. Malcolm had been hired through an agency
11
00:00:55.479 --> 00:01:00.039
that specialized in a state work. The listing described the
12
00:01:00.159 --> 00:01:07.599
position as grounds keeper, Ashworth Hall, Northumberland, full time, live
13
00:01:07.680 --> 00:01:14.760
in remote location, No prior estate experience required. The pay
14
00:01:14.879 --> 00:01:19.599
was generous, the isolation was absolute. Ashworth Hall sat at
15
00:01:19.640 --> 00:01:22.519
the end of a twelve mile private road that wanned
16
00:01:22.560 --> 00:01:26.280
through moorland before climbing into a narrow valley where the
17
00:01:26.319 --> 00:01:30.560
trees grew so thick they blotted out the sky. The
18
00:01:30.640 --> 00:01:34.799
nearest village was Breathwick, nine miles to the south. The
19
00:01:34.879 --> 00:01:38.599
nearest neighbor was No One He arrived on a Tuesday
20
00:01:38.680 --> 00:01:43.640
in late September. The house was Georgian, three stories of
21
00:01:43.719 --> 00:01:48.359
honey colored stone, darkened by two centuries of rain. It
22
00:01:48.480 --> 00:01:52.159
was not a ruin, but it was not exactly alive either.
23
00:01:53.040 --> 00:01:57.280
The windows were clean but dark. The door was heavy oak,
24
00:01:57.680 --> 00:02:01.840
recently oiled. Someone was maintained the structure, even if no
25
00:02:01.879 --> 00:02:05.319
one appeared to be living in it. The agency had
26
00:02:05.359 --> 00:02:07.959
given him a key and a set of instructions written
27
00:02:07.959 --> 00:02:12.280
in a precise, hand lettered script. The instructions covered the basics,
28
00:02:13.400 --> 00:02:18.080
water schedule for the greenhouse, pruning calendar for the ornamental trees,
29
00:02:18.960 --> 00:02:23.360
the combination to the tool shed. The final instruction was
30
00:02:23.439 --> 00:02:28.199
underlined twice, do not alter the layout of the formal gardens.
31
00:02:28.759 --> 00:02:32.759
The positions of the beds, paths and plantings are correct.
32
00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:38.039
Trust the design. Malcolm had read that line three times.
33
00:02:39.120 --> 00:02:43.280
He assumed it was a warning against amateur landscaping, the
34
00:02:43.400 --> 00:02:45.719
kind of note you leave for a new employee who
35
00:02:45.840 --> 00:02:49.719
might decide to improve things. On his first day, he
36
00:02:49.840 --> 00:02:53.080
tucked the instructions into his jacket pocket and went to
37
00:02:53.159 --> 00:02:58.240
explore the grounds. The formal gardens occupied roughly two acres
38
00:02:58.280 --> 00:03:02.479
behind the house. They were arranged in the classic English style,
39
00:03:03.319 --> 00:03:08.400
a series of interconnected rooms formed by yew hedges, each
40
00:03:08.479 --> 00:03:12.120
room containing a distinct planting scheme. There was a rose
41
00:03:12.159 --> 00:03:18.199
garden currently dormant, a knot garden with low box hedges
42
00:03:18.280 --> 00:03:23.639
forming intricate celtic patterns, a water garden centered on a
43
00:03:23.680 --> 00:03:27.439
stone basin fed by a narrow stream that emerged from
44
00:03:27.479 --> 00:03:31.599
beneath a retaining wall, and beyond these a long lay
45
00:03:31.840 --> 00:03:35.319
of lime trees that led to a circular clearing at
46
00:03:35.319 --> 00:03:38.840
the far end of the property, where a stone sun
47
00:03:38.879 --> 00:03:43.400
dial stood on a plinth of moss covered granite. It
48
00:03:43.479 --> 00:03:46.439
was in this clearing that Malcolm first felt the wrongness.
49
00:03:46.759 --> 00:03:49.960
He was standing at the sun dial, reading the faded
50
00:03:50.080 --> 00:03:53.840
Roman numerals when he noticed that the ground beneath his
51
00:03:53.879 --> 00:03:59.280
feet was soft, not soft like damp earth, soft like
52
00:03:59.400 --> 00:04:04.199
loose soil, oil, freshly turned. He looked down The area
53
00:04:04.240 --> 00:04:08.400
around the sun dial's base was bare earth, dark and rich,
54
00:04:09.080 --> 00:04:14.759
roughly three feet in diameter. No grass, no moss, no weeds,
55
00:04:15.840 --> 00:04:19.680
just bare turned soil, as though someone had dug around
56
00:04:19.720 --> 00:04:23.680
the plinth and filled the hole back in. He crouched
57
00:04:24.160 --> 00:04:27.360
and pressed his thumb into the earth. It yielded easily
58
00:04:28.360 --> 00:04:32.279
moisture beaded on the surface. He held his hand close
59
00:04:32.360 --> 00:04:37.279
and inhaled. The soil smelled of iron and something else,
60
00:04:37.920 --> 00:04:44.040
something faintly sweet, like over ripe fruit. He made a
61
00:04:44.040 --> 00:04:48.199
note in his log book and moved on. Over the
62
00:04:48.240 --> 00:04:52.439
first week, Malcolm settled into a routine. He rose at five,
63
00:04:52.959 --> 00:04:56.720
breakfasted in the estate's vast kitchen, and spent the day
64
00:04:56.800 --> 00:05:01.480
working the grounds. The work was satisfied, eyeing and straightforward.
65
00:05:02.279 --> 00:05:05.800
He pruned the climbing roses on the south wall. He
66
00:05:05.879 --> 00:05:09.879
thinned the apple as bell airs. He cleared fallen leaves
67
00:05:09.920 --> 00:05:13.600
from the gravel paths. The gardens were in excellent condition,
68
00:05:14.319 --> 00:05:19.879
requiring maintenance rather than restoration. But every evening, when he
69
00:05:19.959 --> 00:05:23.120
walked the grounds at dusk to check the irrigation and
70
00:05:23.240 --> 00:05:28.759
lock the tool shed, he noticed changes small things. A
71
00:05:28.800 --> 00:05:31.959
previd hedge on the eastern boundary seemed to have shifted
72
00:05:32.040 --> 00:05:36.040
six inches to the left. The gravel path that curved
73
00:05:36.040 --> 00:05:38.920
around the rose garden appeared to ark more tightly than
74
00:05:38.959 --> 00:05:41.720
it had that morning. The stone basin in the water
75
00:05:41.839 --> 00:05:45.920
garden was tilted at a slightly different angle, its rim
76
00:05:46.120 --> 00:05:49.279
catching the last light of sunset in a way that
77
00:05:49.399 --> 00:05:54.120
had seemed different at noon. He attributed these observations to fatigue,
78
00:05:54.600 --> 00:05:58.600
to the unfamiliarity of a new environment, to the way
79
00:05:58.680 --> 00:06:03.600
that low angle light can make familiar objects look strange.
80
00:06:03.639 --> 00:06:08.360
He made notes anyway, because that was his habit. Every
81
00:06:08.399 --> 00:06:11.959
groundskeeper keeps a log. By the end of the second week,
82
00:06:12.399 --> 00:06:16.519
the changes were no longer small. The Knot Garden had
83
00:06:16.560 --> 00:06:21.920
reconfigured itself over night. Malcolm was certain of this because
84
00:06:21.920 --> 00:06:25.360
he had spent three hours the previous afternoon trimming the
85
00:06:25.399 --> 00:06:28.759
box hedges to restore the celtic pattern. He had the
86
00:06:28.800 --> 00:06:33.120
clippings to prove it. A bin full of fragrant green
87
00:06:33.279 --> 00:06:38.879
shreds still damp when he checked them at dawn, But
88
00:06:38.920 --> 00:06:43.839
the pattern was different now. The interlocking curves had straightened
89
00:06:43.879 --> 00:06:48.959
into parallel lines. The symmetry had shifted from radial to linear,
90
00:06:50.279 --> 00:06:53.160
like a compass rose that had been forced into a grid.
91
00:06:54.759 --> 00:06:56.639
He stood at the edge of the Knot Garden for
92
00:06:56.680 --> 00:07:01.600
a long time, staring at the hedges. The clippings were
93
00:07:01.639 --> 00:07:04.279
still in the bin. The hedge trimmer was still in
94
00:07:04.360 --> 00:07:07.959
the tool shed, exactly where he had left it. No
95
00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:10.720
one had been on the property. He had not done this.
96
00:07:11.560 --> 00:07:15.079
He took photographs. He measured the hedge positions with a
97
00:07:15.120 --> 00:07:18.600
tape measure and recorded the dimensions in his log book.
98
00:07:18.959 --> 00:07:21.360
Then he spent the rest of the day restoring the
99
00:07:21.399 --> 00:07:25.680
original Celtic pattern, cutting where the new growth had appeared,
100
00:07:26.399 --> 00:07:31.160
bending the flexible young shoots back into their curves. When
101
00:07:31.160 --> 00:07:34.759
he finished, the garden looked exactly as it had before
102
00:07:36.240 --> 00:07:40.759
he photographed it again. He locked the tool shed. He
103
00:07:40.800 --> 00:07:47.120
went inside at dawn. The pattern had changed again. This time,
104
00:07:47.240 --> 00:07:51.279
the hedges formed a shape he did not recognize, a
105
00:07:51.360 --> 00:07:55.240
series of concentric ovals, like the rings of a tree,
106
00:07:56.079 --> 00:08:00.759
radiating outward from the center of the garden. Each oval
107
00:08:00.920 --> 00:08:04.480
was perfectly spaced from the next. Each was exactly the
108
00:08:04.519 --> 00:08:10.120
same height. The precision was mechanical inhuman. Malcolm did not
109
00:08:10.279 --> 00:08:13.480
try to restore the pattern. He sat on the stone
110
00:08:13.519 --> 00:08:16.759
bench at the garden's edge and stared at the ovals
111
00:08:17.240 --> 00:08:20.639
and tried to understand what he was seeing. He called
112
00:08:20.639 --> 00:08:25.319
the agency the phone rings six times before a woman answered,
113
00:08:26.040 --> 00:08:29.879
her voice thin and distant, as though she were speaking
114
00:08:29.879 --> 00:08:33.720
from the bottom of a well. He described the changes.
115
00:08:34.200 --> 00:08:38.320
He asked who was responsible for the garden's layout. There
116
00:08:38.360 --> 00:08:42.399
was a long silence, then the woman said, the garden
117
00:08:42.480 --> 00:08:47.440
knows what it is. Let it be. She hung up.
118
00:08:49.200 --> 00:08:54.039
Malcolm spent the day researching Ashworth Hall. The estate's history
119
00:08:54.120 --> 00:08:57.639
was not extensive. It had been built in seventeen eighty
120
00:08:57.919 --> 00:09:01.200
by a baronet named Charles Ashwood, who had made his
121
00:09:01.320 --> 00:09:05.360
fortune in the East India trade. The house had passed
122
00:09:05.360 --> 00:09:09.200
through four generations before being sold in nineteen twenty three
123
00:09:09.360 --> 00:09:13.679
to a textile manufacture from Leeds. The manufacturer had renovated
124
00:09:13.720 --> 00:09:18.039
the gardens in the nineteen thirties, employing a landscape architect
125
00:09:18.159 --> 00:09:21.360
named Thomas Vellem, who was known for his use of
126
00:09:21.440 --> 00:09:27.120
sacred geometry and Fibonacci sequences in garden design. Vellum had
127
00:09:27.159 --> 00:09:31.799
disappeared in nineteen thirty seven. The records were sparse. A
128
00:09:31.879 --> 00:09:34.879
letter from Vellum to a colleague discovered in the Leeds
129
00:09:35.080 --> 00:09:39.360
archives mentioned that the Ashworth gardens had become self correcting
130
00:09:39.879 --> 00:09:42.759
and that the design was no longer his to direct.
131
00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:47.559
The letter was dated three days before Vellum's last known appearance.
132
00:09:48.159 --> 00:09:51.519
His body was never found. Malcolm closed his laptop and
133
00:09:51.600 --> 00:09:55.120
sat in the dark kitchen for a while. The house
134
00:09:55.240 --> 00:10:01.279
was very quiet outside. Somewhere in the garden a bird
135
00:10:01.440 --> 00:10:07.720
was calling. A single repeated, note low and mournful, like
136
00:10:07.759 --> 00:10:11.399
a question that expected no answer. The third week was
137
00:10:11.440 --> 00:10:15.600
when the paths began to move, not shift, not subtly,
138
00:10:15.679 --> 00:10:21.440
reawning move. Malcolm would walk a path in the morning,
139
00:10:21.799 --> 00:10:25.559
noting its curves and angles, and return in the afternoon
140
00:10:25.600 --> 00:10:28.360
to find that it led somewhere else. The path that
141
00:10:28.480 --> 00:10:32.919
connected the rose garden to the water garden now terminated
142
00:10:32.960 --> 00:10:35.720
at a hedge that had not been there at noon.
143
00:10:36.360 --> 00:10:39.559
The alley of lime trees, which he had walked every
144
00:10:39.600 --> 00:10:43.480
evening for two weeks, extended thirty feet longer than it
145
00:10:43.559 --> 00:10:47.879
had that morning, the trees marching outward into the moorland
146
00:10:48.440 --> 00:10:52.440
like an army advancing in slow motion. He tried to
147
00:10:52.519 --> 00:10:58.519
keep up. He measured everything, he photographed everything, his log
148
00:10:58.559 --> 00:11:02.879
book filled with pages of numbers and sketches and observations
149
00:11:02.960 --> 00:11:08.279
written in an increasingly unsteady hand. The pattern was becoming clear,
150
00:11:08.879 --> 00:11:12.399
though he could not yet see it whole. The gardens
151
00:11:12.399 --> 00:11:16.799
were rearranging themselves into a shape. The hedges, the paths,
152
00:11:17.200 --> 00:11:21.639
the flower beds, the water features, all of it was
153
00:11:21.679 --> 00:11:31.159
being repositioned, slowly and methodically towards some final configuration. Malcolm
154
00:11:31.200 --> 00:11:36.200
began sleeping badly. He would wake at two or three
155
00:11:36.240 --> 00:11:39.080
in the morning and lie in his narrow bed in
156
00:11:39.120 --> 00:11:44.080
the gatehouse, listening to the sounds of the gardens. There
157
00:11:44.120 --> 00:11:51.960
were sounds, not wind, not animals, a low grinding sound
158
00:11:52.759 --> 00:11:57.320
like stone moving against stone, and beneath that rhythmic pulsing,
159
00:11:57.639 --> 00:12:02.720
steady as a heartbeat, rising from the ground itself. He
160
00:12:02.799 --> 00:12:05.919
went outside once at three in the morning with a torch.
161
00:12:06.960 --> 00:12:11.840
The beams swept across the formal gardens and illuminated nothing unusual.
162
00:12:12.960 --> 00:12:16.559
The hedges were still, the paths were empty. The sun
163
00:12:16.639 --> 00:12:20.240
dial cast a long shadow in the moonlight. But the
164
00:12:20.360 --> 00:12:23.279
pulsing was louder out here, and he could feel it
165
00:12:23.320 --> 00:12:26.600
in his feet, a vibration that traveled up through his
166
00:12:26.720 --> 00:12:30.360
boots and into the bones of his legs. He went
167
00:12:30.399 --> 00:12:33.559
back inside and locked the door. The fourth week he
168
00:12:33.679 --> 00:12:37.120
found the first pair of boots. He was working in
169
00:12:37.159 --> 00:12:40.639
the area beyond the alley where the formal gardens gave
170
00:12:40.720 --> 00:12:44.519
way to rougher ground, a tangle of brambles and old
171
00:12:44.600 --> 00:12:48.000
growth oak that marked the boundary of the maintained estate.
172
00:12:48.320 --> 00:12:51.320
He had been clearing dead fall when his spade struck
173
00:12:51.360 --> 00:12:55.639
something hard. He dug around it carefully and unearthed a
174
00:12:55.679 --> 00:13:00.360
pair of leather boots men sized ten, caked with soil,
175
00:13:00.480 --> 00:13:06.320
but otherwise intact. The leather was old but supple, preserved
176
00:13:06.399 --> 00:13:10.120
by whatever mineral quality the earth possessed. The soles were
177
00:13:10.159 --> 00:13:14.919
worn smooth, the laces were still tied. The boots were
178
00:13:14.960 --> 00:13:18.879
planted upright in the soil, side by side, as though
179
00:13:18.919 --> 00:13:21.360
their owner had been standing in them. When the ground
180
00:13:21.440 --> 00:13:26.159
rose up and swallowed everything above the ankle, Malcolm dug deeper,
181
00:13:26.559 --> 00:13:30.320
expecting to find feet or bones. The hole was two
182
00:13:30.360 --> 00:13:35.440
feet deep when he hid stone, not bedruck cut stone,
183
00:13:36.639 --> 00:13:40.120
a flat slab roughly the size of a coffin lid,
184
00:13:40.279 --> 00:13:44.480
covered in cymbals he did not recognize. He filled in
185
00:13:44.559 --> 00:13:48.000
the hole. He marked the spot with a wooden stake.
186
00:13:48.279 --> 00:13:50.679
He went back to the gatehouse and sat at the
187
00:13:50.759 --> 00:13:55.200
kitchen table and stared at his hands, which would not
188
00:13:55.360 --> 00:14:02.000
stop trembling. That night he dreamed of the gardens. In
189
00:14:02.039 --> 00:14:05.480
the dream, he was standing at the sundial, looking down
190
00:14:05.519 --> 00:14:09.039
at the bare earth around its base. The earth was moving,
191
00:14:10.159 --> 00:14:17.480
not shifting, breathing, rising and falling in slow rhythmic undulations,
192
00:14:17.559 --> 00:14:21.200
like the surface of a sleeping animal, and from somewhere
193
00:14:21.240 --> 00:14:25.080
deep below, so deep that the sound had traveled through
194
00:14:25.159 --> 00:14:29.080
stone and soil and root to reach him. He heard
195
00:14:29.080 --> 00:14:35.720
a voice, not words, a tone, a single sustained note,
196
00:14:36.120 --> 00:14:38.720
held with the patience of something that had been holding
197
00:14:38.759 --> 00:14:41.840
it for a very long time, and intended to hold
198
00:14:41.879 --> 00:14:45.919
it for much longer. Still, he woke with the taste
199
00:14:45.919 --> 00:14:49.000
of iron in his mouth. On the twenty eighth day,
200
00:14:49.600 --> 00:14:52.480
Malcolm saw the pattern hole. He had climbed to the
201
00:14:52.600 --> 00:14:56.200
roof of the Gatehouse, the highest point on the property
202
00:14:56.320 --> 00:15:01.879
besides the house itself. From the there, the formal gardens
203
00:15:01.919 --> 00:15:05.879
spread below him like a diagram. The ovals of the
204
00:15:05.919 --> 00:15:11.000
Knot Garden, the straight lines of the paths, the concentric
205
00:15:11.039 --> 00:15:15.000
circles around the sun dial, the angular geometry of the hedges.
206
00:15:15.919 --> 00:15:19.600
From ground level, these elements had seemed random, or at
207
00:15:19.639 --> 00:15:25.200
best decorative. From above, they formed a single, unified image.
208
00:15:25.440 --> 00:15:29.799
It was a hand, a right hand palm upward, fingers
209
00:15:29.879 --> 00:15:34.240
slightly curled, rendered in hedge and gravel and stone across
210
00:15:34.279 --> 00:15:37.279
two acres of ground. The sun dial was at the
211
00:15:37.279 --> 00:15:41.200
center of the palm. The allee of lime trees was
212
00:15:41.240 --> 00:15:45.919
the middle finger. The rose garden was the thumb. The
213
00:15:45.960 --> 00:15:50.759
water garden, with its stone basin was the wrist, and
214
00:15:50.879 --> 00:15:54.000
the hand was not complete. A little finger was missing.
215
00:15:54.840 --> 00:15:58.080
A gap in the design, a section of garden that
216
00:15:58.159 --> 00:16:02.519
had not yet moved into position. Malcolm could see where
217
00:16:02.519 --> 00:16:06.039
it should be, an empty stretch of moorland, beyond the
218
00:16:06.080 --> 00:16:11.120
formal boundary, exactly where the boots were buried. He climbed
219
00:16:11.159 --> 00:16:13.840
down from the roof. He walked to the boundary where
220
00:16:13.840 --> 00:16:18.440
the brambles met the maintained ground. The soil there was soft,
221
00:16:18.919 --> 00:16:22.039
freshly turned in a shape roughly the size of a
222
00:16:22.120 --> 00:16:25.600
hand print, but a hand print made by something far
223
00:16:25.759 --> 00:16:29.720
larger than a human hand. The boots were gone. The
224
00:16:29.759 --> 00:16:34.440
wooden stake he had used to mark the spot was gone.
225
00:16:34.960 --> 00:16:39.080
In their place was a single u sapling, perfectly centered
226
00:16:39.120 --> 00:16:44.399
in the turned earth, already three feet tall. Malcolm packed
227
00:16:44.440 --> 00:16:48.360
his belongings. He loaded his truck. He drove the twelve
228
00:16:48.399 --> 00:16:51.919
mile private road back to the main highway, and he
229
00:16:52.000 --> 00:16:55.600
did not look back. He called the agency from a
230
00:16:55.600 --> 00:17:00.879
petrol station in Brathwick. The same woman answered. He told
231
00:17:00.879 --> 00:17:03.360
her he was leaving. He told her about the gardens,
232
00:17:03.639 --> 00:17:08.519
the patterns, the boots, the sound beneath the ground. There
233
00:17:08.559 --> 00:17:13.319
was a long silence, then the woman said, mister Reed,
234
00:17:14.240 --> 00:17:19.640
have you completed the design? Malcolm said nothing. The garden
235
00:17:19.720 --> 00:17:23.920
must be complete. The woman said, the previous grounds keeper
236
00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:27.799
understood this. He planted himself. He gave the garden what
237
00:17:27.880 --> 00:17:32.160
it needed to finish. Malcolm asked what was underneath the garden,
238
00:17:32.799 --> 00:17:36.799
what the design was protecting or concealing or keeping in place.
239
00:17:38.960 --> 00:17:42.079
The woman said, the garden is not a lock, mister Reed,
240
00:17:42.880 --> 00:17:45.160
it is a door, and it has been opening for
241
00:17:45.200 --> 00:17:51.160
a very long time. She hung up. Malcolm drove south.
242
00:17:53.319 --> 00:17:56.200
He did not stop until he reached London, where he
243
00:17:56.319 --> 00:17:59.000
checked into a hotel and sat in the room for
244
00:17:59.079 --> 00:18:02.480
three hours, staring at the wall. Then he opened his
245
00:18:02.599 --> 00:18:05.160
log book and looked at the last entry he had
246
00:18:05.200 --> 00:18:09.240
made at Ashworth Hall. He had ridden it standing at
247
00:18:09.240 --> 00:18:13.279
the sun dial in the failing light, his pen pressing
248
00:18:13.359 --> 00:18:16.119
so hard into the page that the letters were carved
249
00:18:16.119 --> 00:18:19.880
into the paper. The entry read, it knows I left
250
00:18:20.599 --> 00:18:25.160
it will wait. He closed the log book. He ordered
251
00:18:25.160 --> 00:18:28.079
a drink from room service. He sat by the window
252
00:18:28.440 --> 00:18:32.720
and watched the city lights flicker, and thought about gardens
253
00:18:33.039 --> 00:18:35.240
and the things that grow in them when no one
254
00:18:35.319 --> 00:18:39.119
is watching, and the patience of roots that reached down
255
00:18:39.200 --> 00:18:45.440
through stone and bone and time, always reaching, never satisfied,
256
00:18:46.119 --> 00:18:50.119
always hungry for the next inch of earth. Somewhere in Northumberland,
257
00:18:50.759 --> 00:18:53.480
in a valley that most maps do not bother to mark,
258
00:18:54.240 --> 00:18:57.359
the little finger of the hand reached outward, and the
259
00:18:57.400 --> 00:18:59.839
ground opened, and the garden grew
1
00:00:04.080 --> 00:00:11.039
Huss Studios. The first thing Malcolm Reed noticed about the
2
00:00:11.119 --> 00:00:15.839
gardens at Ashworth Hall was that they were wrong. Not
3
00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:19.879
wrong in the way a neglected garden goes wrong, Weeds
4
00:00:20.039 --> 00:00:24.839
choking the borders, roses straggling over the paths, the slow
5
00:00:24.960 --> 00:00:31.239
green riot of abandonment. These gardens were immaculate. Every hedge
6
00:00:31.399 --> 00:00:37.000
was clipped to geometric perfection. Every bed was mulched with dark,
7
00:00:37.240 --> 00:00:42.240
fragrant bark. The gravel paths were raked smooth as silk.
8
00:00:43.960 --> 00:00:47.679
If anything, the gardens were too perfect, the way a
9
00:00:47.759 --> 00:00:51.640
stage set is too perfect, designed to be looked at,
10
00:00:52.039 --> 00:00:55.320
not lived in. Malcolm had been hired through an agency
11
00:00:55.479 --> 00:01:00.039
that specialized in a state work. The listing described the
12
00:01:00.159 --> 00:01:07.599
position as grounds keeper, Ashworth Hall, Northumberland, full time, live
13
00:01:07.680 --> 00:01:14.760
in remote location, No prior estate experience required. The pay
14
00:01:14.879 --> 00:01:19.599
was generous, the isolation was absolute. Ashworth Hall sat at
15
00:01:19.640 --> 00:01:22.519
the end of a twelve mile private road that wanned
16
00:01:22.560 --> 00:01:26.280
through moorland before climbing into a narrow valley where the
17
00:01:26.319 --> 00:01:30.560
trees grew so thick they blotted out the sky. The
18
00:01:30.640 --> 00:01:34.799
nearest village was Breathwick, nine miles to the south. The
19
00:01:34.879 --> 00:01:38.599
nearest neighbor was No One He arrived on a Tuesday
20
00:01:38.680 --> 00:01:43.640
in late September. The house was Georgian, three stories of
21
00:01:43.719 --> 00:01:48.359
honey colored stone, darkened by two centuries of rain. It
22
00:01:48.480 --> 00:01:52.159
was not a ruin, but it was not exactly alive either.
23
00:01:53.040 --> 00:01:57.280
The windows were clean but dark. The door was heavy oak,
24
00:01:57.680 --> 00:02:01.840
recently oiled. Someone was maintained the structure, even if no
25
00:02:01.879 --> 00:02:05.319
one appeared to be living in it. The agency had
26
00:02:05.359 --> 00:02:07.959
given him a key and a set of instructions written
27
00:02:07.959 --> 00:02:12.280
in a precise, hand lettered script. The instructions covered the basics,
28
00:02:13.400 --> 00:02:18.080
water schedule for the greenhouse, pruning calendar for the ornamental trees,
29
00:02:18.960 --> 00:02:23.360
the combination to the tool shed. The final instruction was
30
00:02:23.439 --> 00:02:28.199
underlined twice, do not alter the layout of the formal gardens.
31
00:02:28.759 --> 00:02:32.759
The positions of the beds, paths and plantings are correct.
32
00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:38.039
Trust the design. Malcolm had read that line three times.
33
00:02:39.120 --> 00:02:43.280
He assumed it was a warning against amateur landscaping, the
34
00:02:43.400 --> 00:02:45.719
kind of note you leave for a new employee who
35
00:02:45.840 --> 00:02:49.719
might decide to improve things. On his first day, he
36
00:02:49.840 --> 00:02:53.080
tucked the instructions into his jacket pocket and went to
37
00:02:53.159 --> 00:02:58.240
explore the grounds. The formal gardens occupied roughly two acres
38
00:02:58.280 --> 00:03:02.479
behind the house. They were arranged in the classic English style,
39
00:03:03.319 --> 00:03:08.400
a series of interconnected rooms formed by yew hedges, each
40
00:03:08.479 --> 00:03:12.120
room containing a distinct planting scheme. There was a rose
41
00:03:12.159 --> 00:03:18.199
garden currently dormant, a knot garden with low box hedges
42
00:03:18.280 --> 00:03:23.639
forming intricate celtic patterns, a water garden centered on a
43
00:03:23.680 --> 00:03:27.439
stone basin fed by a narrow stream that emerged from
44
00:03:27.479 --> 00:03:31.599
beneath a retaining wall, and beyond these a long lay
45
00:03:31.840 --> 00:03:35.319
of lime trees that led to a circular clearing at
46
00:03:35.319 --> 00:03:38.840
the far end of the property, where a stone sun
47
00:03:38.879 --> 00:03:43.400
dial stood on a plinth of moss covered granite. It
48
00:03:43.479 --> 00:03:46.439
was in this clearing that Malcolm first felt the wrongness.
49
00:03:46.759 --> 00:03:49.960
He was standing at the sun dial, reading the faded
50
00:03:50.080 --> 00:03:53.840
Roman numerals when he noticed that the ground beneath his
51
00:03:53.879 --> 00:03:59.280
feet was soft, not soft like damp earth, soft like
52
00:03:59.400 --> 00:04:04.199
loose soil, oil, freshly turned. He looked down The area
53
00:04:04.240 --> 00:04:08.400
around the sun dial's base was bare earth, dark and rich,
54
00:04:09.080 --> 00:04:14.759
roughly three feet in diameter. No grass, no moss, no weeds,
55
00:04:15.840 --> 00:04:19.680
just bare turned soil, as though someone had dug around
56
00:04:19.720 --> 00:04:23.680
the plinth and filled the hole back in. He crouched
57
00:04:24.160 --> 00:04:27.360
and pressed his thumb into the earth. It yielded easily
58
00:04:28.360 --> 00:04:32.279
moisture beaded on the surface. He held his hand close
59
00:04:32.360 --> 00:04:37.279
and inhaled. The soil smelled of iron and something else,
60
00:04:37.920 --> 00:04:44.040
something faintly sweet, like over ripe fruit. He made a
61
00:04:44.040 --> 00:04:48.199
note in his log book and moved on. Over the
62
00:04:48.240 --> 00:04:52.439
first week, Malcolm settled into a routine. He rose at five,
63
00:04:52.959 --> 00:04:56.720
breakfasted in the estate's vast kitchen, and spent the day
64
00:04:56.800 --> 00:05:01.480
working the grounds. The work was satisfied, eyeing and straightforward.
65
00:05:02.279 --> 00:05:05.800
He pruned the climbing roses on the south wall. He
66
00:05:05.879 --> 00:05:09.879
thinned the apple as bell airs. He cleared fallen leaves
67
00:05:09.920 --> 00:05:13.600
from the gravel paths. The gardens were in excellent condition,
68
00:05:14.319 --> 00:05:19.879
requiring maintenance rather than restoration. But every evening, when he
69
00:05:19.959 --> 00:05:23.120
walked the grounds at dusk to check the irrigation and
70
00:05:23.240 --> 00:05:28.759
lock the tool shed, he noticed changes small things. A
71
00:05:28.800 --> 00:05:31.959
previd hedge on the eastern boundary seemed to have shifted
72
00:05:32.040 --> 00:05:36.040
six inches to the left. The gravel path that curved
73
00:05:36.040 --> 00:05:38.920
around the rose garden appeared to ark more tightly than
74
00:05:38.959 --> 00:05:41.720
it had that morning. The stone basin in the water
75
00:05:41.839 --> 00:05:45.920
garden was tilted at a slightly different angle, its rim
76
00:05:46.120 --> 00:05:49.279
catching the last light of sunset in a way that
77
00:05:49.399 --> 00:05:54.120
had seemed different at noon. He attributed these observations to fatigue,
78
00:05:54.600 --> 00:05:58.600
to the unfamiliarity of a new environment, to the way
79
00:05:58.680 --> 00:06:03.600
that low angle light can make familiar objects look strange.
80
00:06:03.639 --> 00:06:08.360
He made notes anyway, because that was his habit. Every
81
00:06:08.399 --> 00:06:11.959
groundskeeper keeps a log. By the end of the second week,
82
00:06:12.399 --> 00:06:16.519
the changes were no longer small. The Knot Garden had
83
00:06:16.560 --> 00:06:21.920
reconfigured itself over night. Malcolm was certain of this because
84
00:06:21.920 --> 00:06:25.360
he had spent three hours the previous afternoon trimming the
85
00:06:25.399 --> 00:06:28.759
box hedges to restore the celtic pattern. He had the
86
00:06:28.800 --> 00:06:33.120
clippings to prove it. A bin full of fragrant green
87
00:06:33.279 --> 00:06:38.879
shreds still damp when he checked them at dawn, But
88
00:06:38.920 --> 00:06:43.839
the pattern was different now. The interlocking curves had straightened
89
00:06:43.879 --> 00:06:48.959
into parallel lines. The symmetry had shifted from radial to linear,
90
00:06:50.279 --> 00:06:53.160
like a compass rose that had been forced into a grid.
91
00:06:54.759 --> 00:06:56.639
He stood at the edge of the Knot Garden for
92
00:06:56.680 --> 00:07:01.600
a long time, staring at the hedges. The clippings were
93
00:07:01.639 --> 00:07:04.279
still in the bin. The hedge trimmer was still in
94
00:07:04.360 --> 00:07:07.959
the tool shed, exactly where he had left it. No
95
00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:10.720
one had been on the property. He had not done this.
96
00:07:11.560 --> 00:07:15.079
He took photographs. He measured the hedge positions with a
97
00:07:15.120 --> 00:07:18.600
tape measure and recorded the dimensions in his log book.
98
00:07:18.959 --> 00:07:21.360
Then he spent the rest of the day restoring the
99
00:07:21.399 --> 00:07:25.680
original Celtic pattern, cutting where the new growth had appeared,
100
00:07:26.399 --> 00:07:31.160
bending the flexible young shoots back into their curves. When
101
00:07:31.160 --> 00:07:34.759
he finished, the garden looked exactly as it had before
102
00:07:36.240 --> 00:07:40.759
he photographed it again. He locked the tool shed. He
103
00:07:40.800 --> 00:07:47.120
went inside at dawn. The pattern had changed again. This time,
104
00:07:47.240 --> 00:07:51.279
the hedges formed a shape he did not recognize, a
105
00:07:51.360 --> 00:07:55.240
series of concentric ovals, like the rings of a tree,
106
00:07:56.079 --> 00:08:00.759
radiating outward from the center of the garden. Each oval
107
00:08:00.920 --> 00:08:04.480
was perfectly spaced from the next. Each was exactly the
108
00:08:04.519 --> 00:08:10.120
same height. The precision was mechanical inhuman. Malcolm did not
109
00:08:10.279 --> 00:08:13.480
try to restore the pattern. He sat on the stone
110
00:08:13.519 --> 00:08:16.759
bench at the garden's edge and stared at the ovals
111
00:08:17.240 --> 00:08:20.639
and tried to understand what he was seeing. He called
112
00:08:20.639 --> 00:08:25.319
the agency the phone rings six times before a woman answered,
113
00:08:26.040 --> 00:08:29.879
her voice thin and distant, as though she were speaking
114
00:08:29.879 --> 00:08:33.720
from the bottom of a well. He described the changes.
115
00:08:34.200 --> 00:08:38.320
He asked who was responsible for the garden's layout. There
116
00:08:38.360 --> 00:08:42.399
was a long silence, then the woman said, the garden
117
00:08:42.480 --> 00:08:47.440
knows what it is. Let it be. She hung up.
118
00:08:49.200 --> 00:08:54.039
Malcolm spent the day researching Ashworth Hall. The estate's history
119
00:08:54.120 --> 00:08:57.639
was not extensive. It had been built in seventeen eighty
120
00:08:57.919 --> 00:09:01.200
by a baronet named Charles Ashwood, who had made his
121
00:09:01.320 --> 00:09:05.360
fortune in the East India trade. The house had passed
122
00:09:05.360 --> 00:09:09.200
through four generations before being sold in nineteen twenty three
123
00:09:09.360 --> 00:09:13.679
to a textile manufacture from Leeds. The manufacturer had renovated
124
00:09:13.720 --> 00:09:18.039
the gardens in the nineteen thirties, employing a landscape architect
125
00:09:18.159 --> 00:09:21.360
named Thomas Vellem, who was known for his use of
126
00:09:21.440 --> 00:09:27.120
sacred geometry and Fibonacci sequences in garden design. Vellum had
127
00:09:27.159 --> 00:09:31.799
disappeared in nineteen thirty seven. The records were sparse. A
128
00:09:31.879 --> 00:09:34.879
letter from Vellum to a colleague discovered in the Leeds
129
00:09:35.080 --> 00:09:39.360
archives mentioned that the Ashworth gardens had become self correcting
130
00:09:39.879 --> 00:09:42.759
and that the design was no longer his to direct.
131
00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:47.559
The letter was dated three days before Vellum's last known appearance.
132
00:09:48.159 --> 00:09:51.519
His body was never found. Malcolm closed his laptop and
133
00:09:51.600 --> 00:09:55.120
sat in the dark kitchen for a while. The house
134
00:09:55.240 --> 00:10:01.279
was very quiet outside. Somewhere in the garden a bird
135
00:10:01.440 --> 00:10:07.720
was calling. A single repeated, note low and mournful, like
136
00:10:07.759 --> 00:10:11.399
a question that expected no answer. The third week was
137
00:10:11.440 --> 00:10:15.600
when the paths began to move, not shift, not subtly,
138
00:10:15.679 --> 00:10:21.440
reawning move. Malcolm would walk a path in the morning,
139
00:10:21.799 --> 00:10:25.559
noting its curves and angles, and return in the afternoon
140
00:10:25.600 --> 00:10:28.360
to find that it led somewhere else. The path that
141
00:10:28.480 --> 00:10:32.919
connected the rose garden to the water garden now terminated
142
00:10:32.960 --> 00:10:35.720
at a hedge that had not been there at noon.
143
00:10:36.360 --> 00:10:39.559
The alley of lime trees, which he had walked every
144
00:10:39.600 --> 00:10:43.480
evening for two weeks, extended thirty feet longer than it
145
00:10:43.559 --> 00:10:47.879
had that morning, the trees marching outward into the moorland
146
00:10:48.440 --> 00:10:52.440
like an army advancing in slow motion. He tried to
147
00:10:52.519 --> 00:10:58.519
keep up. He measured everything, he photographed everything, his log
148
00:10:58.559 --> 00:11:02.879
book filled with pages of numbers and sketches and observations
149
00:11:02.960 --> 00:11:08.279
written in an increasingly unsteady hand. The pattern was becoming clear,
150
00:11:08.879 --> 00:11:12.399
though he could not yet see it whole. The gardens
151
00:11:12.399 --> 00:11:16.799
were rearranging themselves into a shape. The hedges, the paths,
152
00:11:17.200 --> 00:11:21.639
the flower beds, the water features, all of it was
153
00:11:21.679 --> 00:11:31.159
being repositioned, slowly and methodically towards some final configuration. Malcolm
154
00:11:31.200 --> 00:11:36.200
began sleeping badly. He would wake at two or three
155
00:11:36.240 --> 00:11:39.080
in the morning and lie in his narrow bed in
156
00:11:39.120 --> 00:11:44.080
the gatehouse, listening to the sounds of the gardens. There
157
00:11:44.120 --> 00:11:51.960
were sounds, not wind, not animals, a low grinding sound
158
00:11:52.759 --> 00:11:57.320
like stone moving against stone, and beneath that rhythmic pulsing,
159
00:11:57.639 --> 00:12:02.720
steady as a heartbeat, rising from the ground itself. He
160
00:12:02.799 --> 00:12:05.919
went outside once at three in the morning with a torch.
161
00:12:06.960 --> 00:12:11.840
The beams swept across the formal gardens and illuminated nothing unusual.
162
00:12:12.960 --> 00:12:16.559
The hedges were still, the paths were empty. The sun
163
00:12:16.639 --> 00:12:20.240
dial cast a long shadow in the moonlight. But the
164
00:12:20.360 --> 00:12:23.279
pulsing was louder out here, and he could feel it
165
00:12:23.320 --> 00:12:26.600
in his feet, a vibration that traveled up through his
166
00:12:26.720 --> 00:12:30.360
boots and into the bones of his legs. He went
167
00:12:30.399 --> 00:12:33.559
back inside and locked the door. The fourth week he
168
00:12:33.679 --> 00:12:37.120
found the first pair of boots. He was working in
169
00:12:37.159 --> 00:12:40.639
the area beyond the alley where the formal gardens gave
170
00:12:40.720 --> 00:12:44.519
way to rougher ground, a tangle of brambles and old
171
00:12:44.600 --> 00:12:48.000
growth oak that marked the boundary of the maintained estate.
172
00:12:48.320 --> 00:12:51.320
He had been clearing dead fall when his spade struck
173
00:12:51.360 --> 00:12:55.639
something hard. He dug around it carefully and unearthed a
174
00:12:55.679 --> 00:13:00.360
pair of leather boots men sized ten, caked with soil,
175
00:13:00.480 --> 00:13:06.320
but otherwise intact. The leather was old but supple, preserved
176
00:13:06.399 --> 00:13:10.120
by whatever mineral quality the earth possessed. The soles were
177
00:13:10.159 --> 00:13:14.919
worn smooth, the laces were still tied. The boots were
178
00:13:14.960 --> 00:13:18.879
planted upright in the soil, side by side, as though
179
00:13:18.919 --> 00:13:21.360
their owner had been standing in them. When the ground
180
00:13:21.440 --> 00:13:26.159
rose up and swallowed everything above the ankle, Malcolm dug deeper,
181
00:13:26.559 --> 00:13:30.320
expecting to find feet or bones. The hole was two
182
00:13:30.360 --> 00:13:35.440
feet deep when he hid stone, not bedruck cut stone,
183
00:13:36.639 --> 00:13:40.120
a flat slab roughly the size of a coffin lid,
184
00:13:40.279 --> 00:13:44.480
covered in cymbals he did not recognize. He filled in
185
00:13:44.559 --> 00:13:48.000
the hole. He marked the spot with a wooden stake.
186
00:13:48.279 --> 00:13:50.679
He went back to the gatehouse and sat at the
187
00:13:50.759 --> 00:13:55.200
kitchen table and stared at his hands, which would not
188
00:13:55.360 --> 00:14:02.000
stop trembling. That night he dreamed of the gardens. In
189
00:14:02.039 --> 00:14:05.480
the dream, he was standing at the sundial, looking down
190
00:14:05.519 --> 00:14:09.039
at the bare earth around its base. The earth was moving,
191
00:14:10.159 --> 00:14:17.480
not shifting, breathing, rising and falling in slow rhythmic undulations,
192
00:14:17.559 --> 00:14:21.200
like the surface of a sleeping animal, and from somewhere
193
00:14:21.240 --> 00:14:25.080
deep below, so deep that the sound had traveled through
194
00:14:25.159 --> 00:14:29.080
stone and soil and root to reach him. He heard
195
00:14:29.080 --> 00:14:35.720
a voice, not words, a tone, a single sustained note,
196
00:14:36.120 --> 00:14:38.720
held with the patience of something that had been holding
197
00:14:38.759 --> 00:14:41.840
it for a very long time, and intended to hold
198
00:14:41.879 --> 00:14:45.919
it for much longer. Still, he woke with the taste
199
00:14:45.919 --> 00:14:49.000
of iron in his mouth. On the twenty eighth day,
200
00:14:49.600 --> 00:14:52.480
Malcolm saw the pattern hole. He had climbed to the
201
00:14:52.600 --> 00:14:56.200
roof of the Gatehouse, the highest point on the property
202
00:14:56.320 --> 00:15:01.879
besides the house itself. From the there, the formal gardens
203
00:15:01.919 --> 00:15:05.879
spread below him like a diagram. The ovals of the
204
00:15:05.919 --> 00:15:11.000
Knot Garden, the straight lines of the paths, the concentric
205
00:15:11.039 --> 00:15:15.000
circles around the sun dial, the angular geometry of the hedges.
206
00:15:15.919 --> 00:15:19.600
From ground level, these elements had seemed random, or at
207
00:15:19.639 --> 00:15:25.200
best decorative. From above, they formed a single, unified image.
208
00:15:25.440 --> 00:15:29.799
It was a hand, a right hand palm upward, fingers
209
00:15:29.879 --> 00:15:34.240
slightly curled, rendered in hedge and gravel and stone across
210
00:15:34.279 --> 00:15:37.279
two acres of ground. The sun dial was at the
211
00:15:37.279 --> 00:15:41.200
center of the palm. The allee of lime trees was
212
00:15:41.240 --> 00:15:45.919
the middle finger. The rose garden was the thumb. The
213
00:15:45.960 --> 00:15:50.759
water garden, with its stone basin was the wrist, and
214
00:15:50.879 --> 00:15:54.000
the hand was not complete. A little finger was missing.
215
00:15:54.840 --> 00:15:58.080
A gap in the design, a section of garden that
216
00:15:58.159 --> 00:16:02.519
had not yet moved into position. Malcolm could see where
217
00:16:02.519 --> 00:16:06.039
it should be, an empty stretch of moorland, beyond the
218
00:16:06.080 --> 00:16:11.120
formal boundary, exactly where the boots were buried. He climbed
219
00:16:11.159 --> 00:16:13.840
down from the roof. He walked to the boundary where
220
00:16:13.840 --> 00:16:18.440
the brambles met the maintained ground. The soil there was soft,
221
00:16:18.919 --> 00:16:22.039
freshly turned in a shape roughly the size of a
222
00:16:22.120 --> 00:16:25.600
hand print, but a hand print made by something far
223
00:16:25.759 --> 00:16:29.720
larger than a human hand. The boots were gone. The
224
00:16:29.759 --> 00:16:34.440
wooden stake he had used to mark the spot was gone.
225
00:16:34.960 --> 00:16:39.080
In their place was a single u sapling, perfectly centered
226
00:16:39.120 --> 00:16:44.399
in the turned earth, already three feet tall. Malcolm packed
227
00:16:44.440 --> 00:16:48.360
his belongings. He loaded his truck. He drove the twelve
228
00:16:48.399 --> 00:16:51.919
mile private road back to the main highway, and he
229
00:16:52.000 --> 00:16:55.600
did not look back. He called the agency from a
230
00:16:55.600 --> 00:17:00.879
petrol station in Brathwick. The same woman answered. He told
231
00:17:00.879 --> 00:17:03.360
her he was leaving. He told her about the gardens,
232
00:17:03.639 --> 00:17:08.519
the patterns, the boots, the sound beneath the ground. There
233
00:17:08.559 --> 00:17:13.319
was a long silence, then the woman said, mister Reed,
234
00:17:14.240 --> 00:17:19.640
have you completed the design? Malcolm said nothing. The garden
235
00:17:19.720 --> 00:17:23.920
must be complete. The woman said, the previous grounds keeper
236
00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:27.799
understood this. He planted himself. He gave the garden what
237
00:17:27.880 --> 00:17:32.160
it needed to finish. Malcolm asked what was underneath the garden,
238
00:17:32.799 --> 00:17:36.799
what the design was protecting or concealing or keeping in place.
239
00:17:38.960 --> 00:17:42.079
The woman said, the garden is not a lock, mister Reed,
240
00:17:42.880 --> 00:17:45.160
it is a door, and it has been opening for
241
00:17:45.200 --> 00:17:51.160
a very long time. She hung up. Malcolm drove south.
242
00:17:53.319 --> 00:17:56.200
He did not stop until he reached London, where he
243
00:17:56.319 --> 00:17:59.000
checked into a hotel and sat in the room for
244
00:17:59.079 --> 00:18:02.480
three hours, staring at the wall. Then he opened his
245
00:18:02.599 --> 00:18:05.160
log book and looked at the last entry he had
246
00:18:05.200 --> 00:18:09.240
made at Ashworth Hall. He had ridden it standing at
247
00:18:09.240 --> 00:18:13.279
the sun dial in the failing light, his pen pressing
248
00:18:13.359 --> 00:18:16.119
so hard into the page that the letters were carved
