SELLEST OSAST
What does it take to balance operational efficiency with genuine enjoyment on the frontline? In this episode of Leading the Frontline, host Traci Chernoff sits down with Mark Simpson, founder of Simpson Retail Advisory and a 28-year retail veteran who rose from store manager to Chief Supply Chain Officer at Asda (Walmart International). Mark shares the servant leadership philosophy that shaped his career, the risk that took him from the shop floor into finance, and why retailers chasing productivity can't afford to lose sight of the colleague experience.
In this episode:
Mark shares his path from taking orders at a Chinese takeaway at 14 to becoming Chief Supply Chain Officer at Asda, leading 12,500 colleagues across 28 distribution centers
The biggest leadership lesson Mark learned the hard way: "You can't do it all yourself"
How Walmart's servant leadership philosophy shaped the way he leads teams when he isn't the technical expert
The productivity-versus-enjoyment tension retailers face as self-checkout and online fulfillment reshape frontline jobs
The calculated-risk career advice that moved him from store manager to finance and eventually led him to founding his own advisory business
Ideal for operations and HR leaders in retail, hospitality, and consumer services looking to modernize the frontline without losing sight of the colleague experience.
