What does it take to break free from generational poverty and defy low expectations? In this episode of Good Enough for God, Dayna sits down with educator, author, and global research analyst, Donald Williams to discuss his book, Born from Nothing: From White Trash and Lint Heads to Purpose Across Generations.
Growing up in South Carolina cotton mill culture, Donald came from a long line of "lintheads"—mill workers who began full-time labor as young as nine years old. High school counselors told him college wasn't an option, but through determination, faith, and a pivotal remedial writing course, Donald broke the mold to earn his doctorate and serve globally with the Department of Defense.
In this episode, we discuss:
- Life in the Cotton Mills: The rigid realities, shift-work struggles, and community dynamics of 20th-century southern mill towns.
- The Power of Choice & Faith: How different family members chose radically contrasting paths, and the impact of a grandfather's nightly prayers.
- Breaking Generational Cycles: How Donald's parents (who left school at 14 and 16) sacrificed to send him to college, leading to a legacy where both of his sons went on to earn doctorates.
- Words & Perception: Overcoming harmful labels and learning to see God’s guidance across generations.
