Keep It at Zero Zero: Upstairs at the cafe in town. The big room nobody uses. Mark says, yesterday's question wasn't a critique. Frode says, I know. Every document, every concept, all in one space. And the machine can't draw it, and you couldn't read it if it could. So the question isn't what to show, it's what to show first. Walk up and see more. That was the dream. But two old men taking their glasses off isn't always how it oughta feel. Walk up to a wall of similar things, and all of them start talking at once. Keep it at zero, zero. Till you need it Virtual things don't mind where they sleep. Don't name it yet, the name arrives when it looks right. Less really is more. Less really is more. What do you want in the room, Mark? Notes, papers, concepts? I don't think like that, he says. They're all just things. What matters is what I'm doing, not what they are. Expect a quarter, get 5%. That's the tell. Tie a knot, go back, fix the metadata, come home. Not a rectangle with text in it. Shape color, a glyph. Change the prototype, not the 200 boxes. Seven colors is all the eye can hold apart. Keep it at zero, zero. Till you need it. Virtual things don't mind where they sleep. Don't name it, yet the name arrives when it looks right. Less really is more. I've never written the map, he says I plan there. Sometimes I open it, and the moment I see the shape, I don't need it anymore. Scrap paper, short-term memory. Full, then thrown away. Ten years ago, you told me that, says Froed, now I hear it. Thinking and telling are two different rooms, and what we haven't solved is what the reader keeps the space. A memory palace is beautiful. The ground truth is the data. Render it however you like. Lowercase months.com.acm buggy whip holder in a brand new car. One-way gay, no going back. If you don't have the data, you don't have the reference. In the live test, a Google Doc exported. Dropped in the reader, headings, readable styles on one long line. The font came along for the ride. Held aloft by a misunderstanding on both sides. Don't throw the garbage in the water you're about to drink. Every new PDF's a seat on the naughty step and a thought to carry home. Ask the machine to explain the map to somebody who isn't you. If what it says isn't what you meant, that's not a fault. That's where the two of you aren't on the same page yet. Keep it at zero, zero, till you need it. Virtual things don't mind where they sleep. Don't name it yet. The name arrives when it looks right. Thus really is more. Less really is more. Where does the intent get written down? Not in the prompt. Not in the code. Somewhere. Nobody knew Monday then. Frode wonders how big the file will be.
SELLEST OSAST
On 13 October 2026, the day after a Future Text Lab session, Frode Hegland and Mark Anderson had a long one-to-one call, with Frode working from the quiet upstairs room of a café in town. It began with Mark clarifying that his question the previous day about how references are stored had not been a criticism but an attempt to understand what information was actually available, a thread that came back later in the call. From there the conversation ran across three connected subjects. The first, and the one that took most of the time, was the design of spatial workspaces for knowledge work: how an environment that contains everything in a library, every document, concept and citation, can show almost nothing by default and still let its user reach anything quickly. The second was the relationship between maps and writing, including Mark's long-held view that a map is for planning rather than composing, and what that means for Author and for the new concept-and-document workspace Frode is building. The third was publishing infrastructure: citation data as ground truth, the Citation Style Language file Mark has built for ACM, and whether academic authoring tools are ready for EPUB, tested live by exporting an EPUB from Google Docs and opening it in Origami Text. https://futuretextlab.info/2026/10/15/13-october-mark-frode/
